It doesnt always work this way right after Holiday Weekend but its right after a Holiday Weekend and the news is on full blast today. Sometimes its sort of a slower on ramp back into the news but not today. President Biden Today was in tulsa, oklahoma, touring the greenwood district. The prosperous self sufficient African American Neighborhood in tulsa that 100 years ago this week was beset by a white mob as the president said today. It was not a riot, it was a massacre. Thousands of homes and businesses not only looted but burned to the ground. Whole blocks of homes and businesses and churches in newspapers and restaurants destroyed by a white mob and that not only shot black tulsans in the street, telling innumerable people literally enumerated people. The total Death Toll not known to this day from the Tulsa Race Massacre. But then not only shot people in the street, they literally dropped a Homemade Firebombs on the Greenwood Neighborhood from private aircraft. It was basically a war on that prosperous Black American neighborhood. Incredibly, there are three elderly survivors of the Tulsa Race Massacre who are allowed to tell the tale today. They are all obviously over 100 years old. The three of them each met with President Biden Today in oklahoma. Were going to be talking about that more tonight, including speaking with a descendant of survivors from greenwood who is now a State Representative in oklahoma, in the tulsa area. President biden is pretty impassioned Speech Today in tulsa was itself news as was that visit itself. But he did also make some news that was somewhat unexpected in the content of those remarks. President biden said today that he expects this, month the month of june to be a month of action on Capitol Hill when it comes to Voting Rights. This as republican legislators and governors around the country continue to move ever more draconian bills to restrict the right to vote. President biden says he wants this month to be a call excuse me, a month of action to defend buggy rights. Hes moving the senate to stand the Voting Rights act back up with the Voting Rights act reauthorization thats named for the late congressman John Lewis and he also called in the senate again to pass the for the people act, Senate Bill one. This is the bill that has already passed the house. It would put a proverbial floor under Voting Rights that no state could go below. President biden unexpectedly announced today that he asked Vice President Kamala Harris to lead the effort to pass it, to find a way to get that thing through the United States Senate announcing his desk for his signature. And then President Biden got blunt about why that hasnt happened yet. He said, quote, i hear all of the folks on Tv Saying why didnt biden get this done . Well, he said because biden only has the majority of effectively four votes In The House and its high in the senate with two members of the senate who vote more with my republican friends. At which point, conservative democratic senator both have their ears turn bright red and catch fire. But, again the news there is that Vice President Kamala Harris will be tasked with helping the efforts to get Senate Bill one, to get the for the people act to pass which is going to be very hard to do. That said, for his Part Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia professes now to be shocked, shocked i say that republicans last week would not even vote for a bipartisan commission to investigate the attack on the capital on January 6th. Senator manchin keeps explaining how shocked he was by republicans refusing to vote for them. Whether he was, i dont know, its hard and im shocked that he shocked but whether that has awakened senator Joe Manchin to the fact that republicans if theyre not going to support a bipartisan investigation into what happened on January 6th in their own workplace was attacked, perhaps that will awaken Senator Manchin to the fact that republicans arent going to vote either for Infrastructure Or Anything else for that matter. Well see if he is awake into that reality as well. That may remains to be seen. The Biden Administration also this evening making more news on a different topic when Deb Haaland announced that the Biden Administration will not allow drilling to go forward. Gas drilling in the Arctic Refuge in alaska. Theyve given a green light for drilling and that pristine wilderness, the Biden Administration is going to be rescinding that and hitting the brakes on those approvals. And this of course comes just after days in the biggest Oil Companies in The World are all hit with Court Judgments and shareholder votes all in the same day. All efforts trying to force those huge companies into a future whether effectively not drilling for oil anymore, let alone and protected arctic wilderness. Some of the biggest Oil Companies in earth now facing serious pressure and serious binding constraints on them that are designed to force them into becoming renewable energy companies. Not just rulers anymore. So The Protection of the arctic wildlife refuge. Coming at a time thats particularly volatile and interesting in terms of whats happening in their accountability on climate stuff. Super interesting, super interesting timing. And interesting late, that big news from Secretary Of The Interior, Deb Haaland comes tonight on the same night that voters in New Mexico are choosing her replacement in congress. She was a member of the House Of Representatives went biden tagged her to become Secretary Of The Interior which means that her spot in congress is open and needs to be filled. Polls have disclosed in the last few minutes in New Mexico and the Special Election to fill former Congresswoman Dave hollens seat since she has been elevated to the cabinet. So were going to check in on that race in Mexico Tonight and where democrats are really cannot afford to have that Seat Flip and go to a republican. They cant afford to shrink their majority In The House on the smaller than it already is so that race is interesting on its own terms but particularly interesting in terms of what it means for the slim democratic majority on Capitol Hill. Like i said, the news has hit the ground running today. As of right, now a significant portion of Americas Beef Production capacity is shut down. The company jbs is a gigantic Meatpacking Company. They operate in 20 different countries, according to bloomberg today. Jbs is actually hoping that they might eventually be the subject of an antitrust action in the united states but producers who essentially are being squeezed out of the Meat Production Industry by giant behemoths like jbs that if he eaten up the entire industry. Jbs is the single biggest producer of beef in the united states and today were reminded of that particular kind of vulnerability that it actually creates for us as a country because since this weekend, many of the largest facilities operated by jbs in this country are shut down. Theyre not producing anything right now. Its not because of covid this time, its because of a cyber attack. Another Ransomware Thing Youll recall was just a few weeks ago that Ransomware Cyberattack hit the colonial pipeline. The largest Fuel Pipeline in the united states. It carries nearly half of the Gasoline And Jet fuel on the u. S. East coast. That attack for ransom on the pipeline was carried out by a russiabased criminal Hacking Group called darkside. For their, part this Darkside Group got away with millions of dollars in Ransom Money from the Pipeline Attack. The united states, for our party had our biggest Gas Pipeline in the country shut down for almost a week producing widespread severe Gas Shortages and it lasted even longer than pipelines did. Not the Biden Administration roared back at russia over that Pipeline Attack telling them essentially that even though darkside was a criminal operation, it wasnt explicitly a russian government operation, Biden Administration conflicted russia and intentionally told them that the government was responsible for the actions of that group if russia was giving them Safe Haven to operate the criminal enterprise from within russias borders. We want to monitor that really closely, not only the shut down or the mechanics of that Ransomware Attack in the massive impact that it had in the united states but also the way the Biden Administration shoved rushed back and response to it. Russia apparently did not care about that shove back at them. And we can tell this by their actions. At The End of last week here we go again. It was microsoft at The End of last week putting down a public statement about another cyber attack from russia and this one attributed directly to the russian government. To the russian intelligence services, the same as to our unit thats for the huge Solar Winds hacking attack last year for private enterprise and lots of Government Resources in this country. And this more recent attack, as we are hackers targeted an Email System used by usaid which is part of the state department. So weve got the colonial Pipeline Attack, the permanent hackers based in russia given Safe Haven to operate as an Organized Crime Effort in russia and we also got this news about a russian attack targeting the government and also Jbs Meatpacking caused by an administration and tells them that theyve been hit with a major cyberattack affecting their operations in multiple countries. And in Fact Tack by yet another criminal Ransomware Group based in russia. Russia apparently offering Safe Haven so Organized Crime Groups like this to operate within their borders and attack whoever they want to as long as the kremlin approves of the target. As of this afternoon, this latest attack on the Meatpacking Company has resulted in the shut down of roughly one fifth of Americas Beef Production capability. See how long that lasts. A white House Spokeswoman telling Reporters Today on Air Force one that the White House is engaging directly with the russian government on this matter and delivering the message that they dont harbor ransomware criminals. Responsible states indeed do not harbor Organized Crime Outfits like this. They find them, prosecute them, lock them up. Organized crime outfits are not allowed to operate in an unchecked. If that government approved way and responsible countries. Russians not or possible country. They absolutely give Safe Haven to groups like this. Even in the face of the u. S. Government being targeted by those attackers. Those Organized Crime Groups have tested report of the kremlin but sometimes its the government itself. Apparently when the u. S. Government brushes the back on something like this, it just makes him do it more. President biden Vladimir Putin are scheduled to meet for a summit in two weeks in person in geneva and in advance of that summit, weve now got these multiple attacks against the united states out of russia including their Attacking Gasoline and burgers. Theyre figuring out how to tackle Apple Pie presumably. Thats happening in the immediate lead up between biden and putin. Youll also remember how last week, the president of belarus set up Fighter Jet to force down a Passenger Plane because he wanted to arrest an Opposition Journalist that was on board of that Passenger Plane. Here is that same president of belarus this weekend, yachting on the Black Sea with his sweetheart. We think were going to get engaged under the harbor. Weve always known that will be together. The president of russia, Vladimir Putin hosting belarus following that international incident as President Biden is weighing what sanctions is going to impose on belarus for literally forcing a commercial Passenger Plane full of passengers including american citizens while biden is weighing what the Wests Response should be to that, whats Americas Response should be to that. Heres putin inviting him out for a Boat Ride and a big dinner. Also offering extra flights in and out of belarus from russia, to mitigate that the whole rest of The World because a Fighter Jet might joint Passenger Flight and force it down. Russian belarus announcing new military exercises together. Russia announcing that theyre sending baylor is a 500 Million dollar valentine. Good job sending the Fighter Jets to take down a Passenger Plane so you can arrest and torture a 26yearold journalist. What else do you need from us to protect you from any consequences of that . Bidens mad, The Worlds mad. Dont worry, will take care of here are kind of guy. And not like doing this subtly to shore up lukashenko right . Theyre bragging about this and bragging about how in your face this is, particularly to President Biden ahead of the summit in two weeks. The deputy Foreign Minister of russia brag to russian State Tv that before the summit with Biden The Americans must assume that a number of signals for moscow must be uncomfortable for them including in the coming days meaning you dont like any of these things heading up for the summit . Theres more coming youre not gonna like it. So, i mean obviously here is a challenge from Biden And Russia for a country. They keep attacking, us attacking our elections in 2016 and in 2020 both times trying to boost the chances of the republicans in those elections. Donald trump, one time he won one time he didnt. More on that in a moment. They have locked up the most effective Opposition Leader in Russia Alexei Navalny and outlawed his political organizations. That was after a failed effort to assassinate him. Theyve got him imprisoned indefinitely despite calls by the united states and lost of other countries that navalny should be like oh. Russia has actually stepped it up since they locked up navalny. They have recently just basically outlawed dozens of other opposition groups theyve declared even big wellknown groups like the up in russia to be undesirable. They pulled the leader of open russia off a plane as he was about to fly from st. Petersburg to poland. They pulled him off the plane and locked him up. Ahead of open russia, that group. That grip dissolved itself because theyve been declared an undesirable group. They started picking off leaders and arresting them. You know . As the west recoils at this totally out of Bounds Gangster moved by the dictator in belarus, the Fighter Jet and the Passenger Plane, here is putin putting that guy onto his lap. Not only defending what he did, but protecting him from the international consequences. It is not likely to be a Coincidence Putin is doing all of this in the immediate lead up to him and biden having their big Face To face summit. It will be interesting to see how President Biden and the administration deals with all of this. I have no idea what the right way is to deal with it. I dont envy anybody who has those decisions to make in this case, about how to respond or not, or maneuver around all of these provocations. While itll be interesting to see what our own government does, here with this new presidency, this new administration does to deal with this, Look at what else russia is doing right now. So, the Foreign Minister of russia, saga lavrov, youll remember trump invited him into the Oval Office early in his presidency. Yesterday, he was asked about the upcoming summit between Putin And Biden and he said one of the Things Russia is going to raise at the summit, one of the things putting this Going To Press Biden On as but lavrov called the, quote, prosecution of those accused of the riots on January 6th. Russia and Vladimir Putin are now prepared to champion the cause of The Pro Trump Mob that attacked the u. S. Capital on January 6th to try to stop the counting of Electoral College Votes in the last president ial election. Russia says they are being persecuted, they are very concerned, theyre going to make an international incident out of the u. S. , prosecuting the people who took part in that attack, saying that is persecution of the political opposition and should be a source of international scandal. Of course theyre doing that of course. But meanwhile, you know, here is whats become of the candidate they try to help against biden in this past election, against Hillary Clinton in the election before that. Heres whats become of him and the movement still supporting him. As far as i know, this is the first case of Abject Fraud and a coup of the united states of america. So, its going to have to be dealt with. It should be he can simply be reinstated, that a new Inauguration Day is set. And biden is told to move out of the White House, and [laughs] and President Trump should be moved back in. That was from a Qanon Conspiracy Theory conference that was held this weekend in dallas, texas. The woman speaking there in a little vest, thats Sydney Powell, The Pro Trump Lawyer who filed lots of lawsuits after the elections, seeking to have the president ial election results thrown out. Making wild allegations of supposed fraud in the president ial election. Every single one of which was thrown out by every single court in which those allegations were heard. You know, it doesnt matter. Republican circles, it doesnt matter the fraud claims arent true. They are the preferred reality. Trump won trump won he won. [applause] he won the popular vote. He won the popular vote, and he won the electoral college vote. Retired general Mike Flynn who was trumps national Security Adviser. He twice pled guilty to lying to investigators about his secret contacts with the russian government. He was nevertheless pardoned by trump if or he could be sentenced. Trump administration apparently planned to bring Mike Flynn back into government if they had won a second term. The New York times reported in February Trump told people in a second term, he would make Mike Flynn white House Chief of staff, or director of the fbi. Sure, why not . He seems hes totally together. Hes going to do this thing. Thats the guy from the pillow company, and the dress by President Trump by this event next saturday is newlyadded to the fire for this event. And earlier flyer did not include trump. The new one does and hes being billed as our real president. Says he will appear by jumbotron among these personalities for making their Living Selling Trump supporters on the idea President Biden is really president and Donald Trump is going to be reinstated, and they could make it happen. If they amount a violent attack to make it happen, at least russia will have their back to save them from being persecuted by the tyrannical Biden Administration. After trump was elected, in the 2016 election, the man who served as deputy national Security Adviser for President Obama did some traveling. He left the u. S. For a while, and party says to try and understand the effect that a changing america has on The World. But also, clearly to get some perspective on the madness we seem to be doing ourselves and at the time. He says this, quote, sometimes Conspiracy Theories are the darker musings of those kept out of power in a society. Sometimes, they are fueled by those and power to keep a society distracted. The trump years went beyond that. Conspiracy theories were driving force behind the government itself, connecting to those most potent grievances of those who felt excluded even though their guy had won, shaping the Subject Matter of the national discourse and radicalizing individuals inclined to radical prejudice. Once people choose to exist in an entirely separate reality, its no easy task to bring them back. When every turn of national brands can be framed as a validation of their grievances. We will be living with the residue of that radicalization for a long time. As i traveled outside the country, i saw what was happening at home was leading others to reassess america itself. In 2017, he says, i traveled to tokyo to give a top on Foreign Policy. I sat in a windowless room in hotels conference area, flying it Horseshoe Arrangement of tables by the Vice President s of major japanese corporations. Tensions were high with japans nuclear armed neighbor north korea. I expected their questions to be about that. Instead, they asked what had happened that summer in charlottesville, virginia . Who were these people marching through the streets . Why had trump said there were good people on both sides . But they were really asking, i sensed, was a more fundamental question is that you . Is that america . I offered the usual explanation for the 2016 election. The combination of criticisms of the clinton campaign, the news media, the bizarre twists that coalesce to elevate trump. The fact there had been no massive shift in public opinion to the right, but rather a radicalization on the right. I watch them listened skeptically. These men lived in cold reality. Numbers on the ballot sheet. They couldnt indulge in america that was experimenting with insanity. Their entire lives had been shaped by american power. We provided for Japans Defense and nuclear deterrent. We implicitly steered its Foreign Policy. We wrote the roles of global capitalism that allowed them to thrive. We developed a technologies that were reshaping how their companies managed information. We shape the culture of international business that led us to be sitting, that wearing suits in Hotel Conference rooms that could have been anywhere. They tell it accept temporary insanity. The invasion of iraq, for instance. They could whether the results of our excesses. The financial crisis, for instance. They cannot gamble on a country that elevated someone like trump. Who praised Fascists Marching in the streets and steer the national discourse into the depths of conspiracy theory. That was more dangerous than north korea. He says, quote, i was anchored in a belief that all these prodemocracy movement somehow needed to coalesce. As i walk class through syllabus based upon country after country that are drafted to the Wrath Nationalist of authoritarian hungary, turkey, russia, and get, brazil, it was glaringly obvious how interconnected these rightwing nationalists were. They use common tactics, common narratives in common Conspiracy Theories to legitimize their role. Many of them shared common sources of financing, corruption and even political consultants. Isolated, the Resistance Movements that gave me hope would likely fail if they stayed isolated. If they were connected, perhaps some of them could succeed. That would require an america that came to its senses after recognizing what had gone. Wrong america helped shape The World we would live in before descending into the cesspool of the trump years. We now have a government that was busy radicalizing a huge swath of American Society with pockets of the country turning to violent white supremacy or a Qanon Conspiracy Theory positive that america is secretly run by a cabal of Child Sex traffickers. And precisely the time that progressive forces around The World were under siege, America Absentia did self at the defensive the most basic propositions that wants to find it in The World. The idea that individuals are entitled to a basic set of freedoms that should be applied equally to all people. The idea that democratic governance would compel a society to organize itself around a common set of facts. The idea that people of different races, religions, and ethnicities could peacefully coexist by forging a Common Sense of identity. The lifelines offered to those who struggled for those things in the own spaces, validated by the results that america itself could produce. We did big things. We had lost our grip on that lifeline. I said a moment ago it comes out some are actually late todays tuesday. It just came out today and its about a lot but its got this urgent question at its core about figuring out why even us, why the united states started to bend with all the other parts of The World towards authoritarianism with the president that came after barack obama. Ben rhodes joins us now to talk about it. Ben, congratulations on this and thanks for being here. Thanks so much rachel. So i read the book and i took Notes Throat and at The End of my notes i just wrote and sharpie that ive been taking notes with pencil. I took out a Sharpie And Road at the bottom of it, this is a dark book. Because i feel like you grappled really honestly with a lot of trends in The World from which we are not immune and to which there is no easy answer. I feel like you are in a pretty dark place in terms of where The World is going and where we are. Well put it this way, rachel. When i peel myself up off the ground after seeing the election i kind of one abroad Looking for answers. Sometimes you can see more clearly whats happened here and in the Starting Point for me was talking to a hungarian Opposition Figure and i asked him how has your country gone from being a democracy to a single autocracy basically. And he said to me, its quite simple. The Prime Minister was elected on a rightwing financial crisis. The right wing judges, feud the parliamentary judges change voting was to make it easier for his supporters to vote. Enrich some cronies to have a rightwing Media Machine and wrapped it all up in a national flow of us versus them. Plus, the real hungarians in them its the liberal elites, and hes talking and im thinking he could be describing whats happened in america with a Republican Party. And by the way, we got that playbook from Vladimir Putin. And i think what i need to reckon with is someone in a position of power because hungarian opposition. I had to wrestle with how did america become part of this trend and what did we do to contribute to it but also what could we do to get out of it and i did find some hope and all of those progressive movements that i alluded to, particularly young people stepping forward that actually theres a pushback here and theres a chance to steer the pendulum back and im just going to be honest its not preordained in any way. Well and thats the part of it that i feel like is very important and we talk to and portray the rise of people who are involved in the resistance against him in the same thing with putin and the resistance against him and the same thing in china and incredibly moving third portion in your book on the Thought Hong Kong protesters and it made me feel like i learned from the way that you learned, about the authoritarian playbook in about the way that all the authoritarians do. Theyre not exactly the same, but they all do basically the same things in order not to only get power but also consolidated and worked very hard and never giving it up. I dont feel like theres an anti authoritarian playbook that is as tested and as effective and i feel like the lessons arent, other than the longing for more solidarity among different people who are resisting different authoritarian some different parts of The World, i dont know that theyve got a playbook that works in other places too. Well i think what you see is different playbooks in different places in part of the argument im making here as we have to learn from them. In Hong Kong, where they had a power with the Communist Party that youre standing up to first of all that tells us that we keep hearing about the attractiveness of the chinese model of governance. There was one city in The World that had a chance and the Tire City basically trying to opt out and what they did in this protest is creighton identity that was very much ripped in the defense democrat. What Alexei Navalny did is center his argument and anticorruption. That essentially the key vulnerability of the authoritarians and russia and in this country is corruption and thats of course the weak spot that he exposed of putin and thats also what some of the people in the position didnt hungary as well and they too were blending this idea that we have a national identity is proud hungarians without it being inconsistent with democracy. I think if you Look across that, it doesnt get us rachel because the idea is being the us, seen as americans not in our Foreign Policy but where weve come up short of our ideal only underscores how important it is to be uncompromising in the defense of the idea that a multi racial multi ethnic democracy made up of people from everywhere can succeed. If Alexei Navalny, he told me i know the danger him in. Ive been poisoned. When the sala closes behind me i know they can do anything to me. Our next guest is someone positioned to speak both to history and its present, one of the near casualties of the Tulsa Race Massacre was a blackowned newspaper called the tulsa star. Based in greenwood among other things reported on the overwhelming number of leanings. They terrorize the area. Little Star Newspaper was a near casualty because although the paper was destroyed, headquarters were destroyed by the white mob that day, members of the Community Salvage with a could and revived that paper. They renamed it the oklahoma eagle. You can still read the eagle today. One of the people who bought and continue the paper was man named edward goodwin. He and his Descendants State in oklahoma after the massacre. They rebuilt with the could of the community. His granddaughter is a safe representative in oklahoma. Her name is Regina Goodwin. She joins us now. She represents the States 73rd District which includes greenwood. Representative, thank you for joining us tonight. I know its a very somber day. It is. Rachel, thank you for having me and covering this issue. Means a lot. Let me ask you how you felt about President Bidens Visit Today and his remarks, and how it was received in the city. First of all, to have a president to come to Tulsa Oklahoma for the first time in our history to address this issue says a lot about President Biden. And its special to us as tulsans because we know this story, these lives we continue to remember, the incident we continue to remember is significant. He has the compassion to come to tulsa and talk about the massacre that happened. It means a lot to have this international spotlight on tulsa, oklahoma and particularly the fact he got to share time with the survivors. The fact he spent time with them, three survivors, that quite frankly deserve justice. By gods, graced still with us. It means a lot. I was struck by President Biden talking about the economic long term ramifications of the destruction of greenwood. The loss of generational wealth. The businesses that were never handed down. The property that was never handed down. The families are never had the opportunity to build on what had been built up in the community. Why what do you make of his discussion about what we can do now to address the racial Wealth Gap . Hes talking about inequity and housing, small business finance. Granular specific things. He did point out we had 32 homeownership, and 1921. Its about the same now, 100 years later. When you Look at our white counterparts, 57 homeownership, the differences are dramatic. Yes, hes right. Hes in a position where he can do quite a bit as it relates to homeownership, loans, quite frankly to people having land. You have to have land to build on. Land was lost, taken, stolen during that day. And when you come to the North Side community, when you Look at the gentrification happening in tulsa, absolutely. Right policy, implemented policy. We can do more in tulsa. I am glad hes giving thought to it, and the next thing we have to do is put actions behind it. We stand ready, we continue to do the work in tulsa. Certainly national federal help would be greatly appreciated. Reparations, absolutely, are due. And it could come in many forms. Oakland State Representative Regina Goodwin who represents the state some of our district which includes greenwood. Democrats dont want to lose one because of how small the democratic majority already is in the House Of Representatives. Polls have closed now in New Mexicos first congressional district. Lets check in with Steve Kornacki to see what we know. Rachel, we have a winner in New Mexicos first congressional district, a Special Election. The democrats melody defeated Mark Moore is the republican. Defeated him handily. This is not quite all the votes. But just about all the votes. You see the margin for stanbury 24 points over. You see democrats win the seat. That in and of itself is not a shock. It had been democratic seat. Depaul, and now the secretary of interior, this had been her seat. Joe biden, the president , had carried this district overwhelmingly back in november. Not a huge surprise the democrats win, but the story and the suspense coming into this election. It was all about the margin. Let me take you through that angle. Two numbers here that were benchmarked coming in tonight. I mentioned Joe Biden won this district in november. Thats it right there. Bidens margin. It was 23 points. Its one of the reasons democrats felt confident they could take depaul and out of the seat. Put her in the biden cabinet, take their chances in a Special Election because biden had won this thing by 23 points. I mentioned depaul, and she was on the ballot for the house last november. Same election as biden. She won the district by 16 points. I say there are benchmarks, those were the two benchmarks coming into this. What republicans were hoping for was not necessarily to win. This they wouldve been thrilled to win the seat. But what republicans were hoping for more realistically was for a race that was closer than these two numbers. Maybe substantially closer than these two numbers. They were hoping, potentially, for a single Digit Race because of course you can remember. This one the she was on the other foot for democrats and republicans, back when Donald Trump was president. He had the Special Elections, 2017, 2018, for this pattern emerged. Democrats were doing substantially better and those Special Elections and they had in the president ial election. What was that . A signify. Or a port of the 2018 Midterm Wave that was to come for democrats that got them back and control of the house. Republicans, now that biden is president , were hoping that this Special Election would give them something comparable. It would give them a result, or even if you dont when they could say, hey in this deeply democratic district, we held the democrats to eight points. Six points. Ten points. Something like that. But you are seeing here is that didnt happen. That did not materialize. A 60 to 36 right now. Again, the final votes that are coming in. The could knock this from 24 to 23. Basically, stanbury is going to at least match Joe Bidens margin in this district of 23 points again. This may hold at 24 points. She could be exceeding the margin. Again, take these Special Elections with a grain of salt. There is always varying circumstances involved. Republicans came in tonight hoping they could get a big talking point, hoping they could get some momentum that would point to a big midterm here for them, and its democrats who are going to be coming out in New Mexico, bragging and saying, hey, maybe that conventional wisdom about it being tough for us next year, maybe the democrats are saying its a little where the ever examination.
