Are very used to that pant he wears. But, it is a remarkable not so remarkable. Semipredictable results in New Mexico tonight. So far a stronger than expected showing for democrats. At The End of our hour well see exactly where the votes stand and well do it without Steve Cornacki which means i may have to take my jacket off. I am not sure. Well see how it goes. Okay. If you Stand Up and take your jacket off, i dont even want to be for the ratings coming in tomorrow. It will be overwhelming. Yeah, you may reconsider the whole thing. Thank you, rachel. Thank you, lawrence. In tulsa, oklahoma, today, President Biden describes an assault on our democracy. He was talking about Voting Rights when he said that. He went to Tulsa Today to mark an assault that happened there 100 years ago. These two assaults 100 years apart are both driven by White Supremacists. Thats whats behind both of the assaults that President Biden talked about today. The one that happened 100 years ago was a violent, murderous attack that became a massacre of black people. So huge that no official accomplice accounted of the number of dead bodies after the white supremacist attack. The people of Tulsa Massacred their black neighbors and not only not want the black people to vote, they did not want them to breathe or live. The White Supremacists of tulsa, did not just take away black peoples rights to vote, they took away black peoples rights to life. One night changed everything. Greenwood was a community itself, it was not separated outside. It was not everyone. There was enough hate, Resentment And Vengeance in the community. Enough people believe that america does not belong to everyone and not everyone is created equal. Not everyone created equal is the first commencement of white supremacy. Republicans do not believe everyone is created equal. Thats why republican legislatures believe they can restrict Black Americans right to vote. Republicans do not believe all voters are created equal. Republicans believe that republican voters are better people than democratic voters. Thats the belief that justifies to them. Republicans believe they can identify by race. Well begin tonight with a discussion of what President Biden called the truly unprecedented assault on our democracy of the republicans have launched this year and later in the hour, the Professor Cobb and Caleb Gayle, well consider in great details the assault on life itself that occurred in tulsa, oklahoma, 100 years ago. The democratic legislatures in texas and other states calling for help in washington now to defeat the assault on our democracy. Today President Biden said this. June should be a month of action on capitol hill. I hear all the folks on Tv Saying why dont biden get it done . Well, biden only has the majority of four votes In The House and the entire senate with two members of the senate who vote more with my republicans. But, we are not giving up. Early this year, the house representatives passed for the Peoples Act to protect our democracy. The senate is going to take it over this month and i am going to fight like heck with every tool of my disposal. The house is working on the John Lewis Voting rights act. It is critical to provide tools for the right to vote. To signify the efforts today, i am asking our Vice President Kamala Harris to help these citizens, with her leadership and your support, well overcome again. I promise you but it will take a hell of a lot of work. Trey martinez had this message for democratic senator Joe Manchin. Here in texas when times get tough, it is time to cowboy up. Senator manchin, please cowboy up and you may not think and you dont want to destroy the country but theyre going to destroy the Country State by state with these harsh voter restrictions. It is very tough. Texas Governor Greg Abbott promised to call a special session to bring the bill to a vote again. The governor threatened to defund the legislature in a Tweet Yesterday which was purely trumpian style. He liked that tweet so much that he endorsed Greg Abbott today. 14 states enacted 22 new laws that restricted voting access. Secretaries of states have been targeted. In arizona, republicans removed democratic secretary of State Katie hobbes ability to defend Election Results in court challenges. Secretary hobbes will be joining our discussion in a month. The statement says we have watched with deep concern as republicanled State Legislatures across the country have in recent months proposed or implemented what we considered radical changes to core electoral procedures in response to unproven and intentionally destructive allegations of a stolen election. It no longer meet the conditions for free and fair election. It calls into action whether the united states will remain a democracy. As scholars of democracy, we condemn these actions in the strongest possible terms as a betrayal of our precious democratic heritage. The last line of their statement says ominously, our democracy is fundamentally at stake. History will judge what we do at this moment. Tonight former democratic Texas Member Beto orourke said this. People understand how precarious and important this moment is. It calls on all of us to do what we can while we still have this window to act. Thanks by the way to the Texas State House democrats who stopped the Voter Suppression Deal bought us a window of time. We may have about the month of june within this to get the Peoples Act to pass in the u. S. Senate and that puts an end to what theyre trying to do in texas, georgia and about 45 states legislatures across the country. Leading off our discussion, Julian Castro and former secretary in the obama administration, katie hobbes. Secretary hobbes, let me begin with you and your reaction of what the president said . The president had done nothing but continue to lie about the election that he lost. Hes inciting i was asking what President Biden said today. Sorry, i thought you said president trump. The president is exactly right. We are seeing an assault on our democracy on many fronts starting with the former president on the assault on the election he lost last november and most americans have moved onto and all these bills that were seen passed in legislatures across the country continuing to attack peoples rights to vote. This is an assault on our democracy. And Julian Castro, the President Today laid out the sketch of a schedule saying june was going to be an important month to try to move this forward. Yes, look, what we have is a moment thats critical of preserving our democracy. I agree with Joe Biden. We have our democracy thats under assault in most of our 50 states. This is a party thats going to do everything that it can the whole i thought the president did something fantastic today in asking Vice President harris to take the lead on trying to work with folks around the country to preserve our Voting Rights. It is going to be a top priority with someone who understands these issues and who has a lot of fight in here. It gives us confidence. Secretary hobbs, in arizona and other states the republicans in legislature dont need any democratic votes at all to pass these restrictions on voting. Yet in washington for the democrats in the senate to pass their bill protecting voting in america, it requires 60 votes now under current senate rules which means it requires at least 10 republicans to join this initiative to protect the vote in the united states. What would you say to Senator Manchin about the fairness of that that these laws can be passed without any democratic votes in the states legislatures but in washington they need these ten republican votes under the current rule. I would say that we are under assault like we have never seen before. And democracy itself is at stake. We need them to rise to this moment and do everything they can to use every tool in arsenal to make sure that we are protecting Voting Rights in states across the country and if we cant protect it in the states, we need to protect it in the federal level and the filibuster is blocking that. Secretary of castro, What Happens Next in texas . Well, look, i am proud Texas House democrats had a lot of fight in them and they use every tool and were able to save off the passage of sb7. What happens now is everyone, advocates and everyday texans are pushing and pushing and we are going to keep pushing washington, d. C. And Senator Manchin and others to step up and pass the Peoples Act and Voting Rights act. This is critical and we need to get it down. Everybody is going to do their part and including texas. We need the help of washington, d. C. Secretary hobbs, the elements of these bills concerned me the most is what happens after the votes are cast. Georgia has changed that process after the votes are cast and reduced if not eliminated the Secretary Of State Authorities Withover dealing what happens to the votes after they are cast if there is a court challenge. In texas, they are also changing whats possible to the votes after they are cast in terms of lawsuits brought and proofs for trials and that sort of thing. What do you see of this pattern where republican leaders are trying to change the process how votes are handled after they are cast. This is incredibly alarming. It is incredibly alarming for everyone paying attention right now and even people who are not paying attention, they are laying the Ground Work to steal the next election not through means that we cant see but from right out in front of us. They are laying the Ground Work to do that now. We have to do everything we can to stop it. And Secretary Castro in texas, what they are saying is you can overturn an election by going to court alleging Voter Fraud but you will not have to prove that the allegation you are making involves enough votes to actually change the outcome of the election but still in a texas court, texas republicans want to be able to overturn an election. This is absolutely crazy. The world is turned upside down. This is providing the opening for the type of fraud that they are fraudulently asserting right now. This is the same kind of projection we saw of four years of Donald Trump except this time it can have consequences of our democracy. Thats why this moment is so urgent and strong enough and how important for our senators to put their democracy ahead of our concerns for our elections and do the right thing for this moment. Secretary hobbs, thank you first of all for joining the phrase, Fraud It, to describe whats happening in your state to the ballots. Whats the latest of the Fraud It there and What Happens Next . I think theyre going to continue to drag this out as long as possible because we have seen that theyre making money off of it. Theyre continuing now at a slow rate of counting ballots. So i guess well continue to watch and continue to observe and share our concerns with the public. Secretary of state, Katie Hobbs and former secretary Julian Castro, thank you very much for starting off our special tonight. Thank you. Coming up, 16, four new indictments. The toll is 16 people who give themselves the false level of Oath Keepers who are charged from attacking the capitol on January 6th. Possibly revealing more coconspirators in their plot, people like Roger Stone who hung around with socalled Oath Keepers should be very worried tonight. Thats next. Should be very worrd tonight. And accused of conspiracy to stop congress from formally certifying Joe Bidens Electoral College victory. That brings the number of codefendants charged in the largest Conspiracy Case from that day to 16. The newly named defendants are Joseph Hackett and William Dolan and William Isaacs and the fourth name are still redacted. The fight is not over once the group entered the Capitol Building and he waved rioters towards the highway. Joining us now is a former prosecutor and a chief Assistant District Attorney in the Manhattan District attorneys office, dan, thank you for joining us tonight. I appreciate it. I want to go straight to this part of this report saying that one of the people whose indicted, the name is still redacted and what the crime is, the accusation is redacted. Why would that be . Thanks for having me, lawrence, the person is not apprehended and the government does not trust these folks. The indictment reeks of people that dont respects the government and dont want the government to operate the way it does. Law enforcement authorities are paranoid in normal cases. Prediscussions with some of these accusers in the 16. What does preliminary means . It means theyre starting to talk to defense lawyers. It is a common thing in the criminal Justice System for lawyers to talk to each other, hey, whats this all about and how strong are the charges or what are you looking for and how much time and etcetera, so you have these kinds of discussions. It simply means that that they are having preliminary discussions. Prosecutors want this case to be resolved, not guilty, the logistics to try 16 people at once which the judge have noted and said. It becomes manageable if some of them become witnesses for the prosecution that reduces your act of Defendant Content of the trial and provide you with usually damming evidence. There is nothing the prosecuors like more when it is flipped. Theyre always looking for someone to be able to get up on the Witness Stand to explain in a narrative exactly what happened and lets not forget there are uncharged coconspirators who were mentioned in the indictment. Folks who run the Oath Keepers who have not been charged. One of those people who faced any danger whose name is steve rhodes, prosecutors quoted him in one of these filings, i do want some Oath Keepers to stay on the outside, to stay fully armed and prepare to go in armed if they have to. Well post outside of d. C. Awaiting the president s orders. We hope hell give us the orders. We want him to declare an insurrection and call us up as the militia. Dan, i am struck by the fact that they were so afraid of washington, d. C. s Gun Control laws but they were standing outside with their guns and waiting for this president to say publicly, yes, this is an insurrection and i needed you to get in there with your guns. It is another reason why to have a January 6th commission. We need to get to the bottom of this a strong case of people in premeditated way on struck the ultimate justice. I had a lot of Obstruction Cases but it was Grand Jury or trials or federal investigations. This is obstructing the democracy which stopping the counts of the electoral votes. This is the obstruction. Daniel alonzo, thank you for sharing your expertise with us tonight. Thank you, good to be with you. Psst psst All Good today marking the massacre of Black Americans that occurred 100 years ago in tulsa, oklahoma. The vibrant Business Community called black wall street. President biden said this. Lets unlock more than the incredible in innovations thatll come from historic universities. I have a 5 Billion program, give me research to invest in high demand fields to compete in jobs. The reason students are equally able to learn as well and get the good paying jobs starting 90 or 100,000 bucks. They dont have the money to provide those. Guess what . Theyre going to get the money. Instead of just talking about infrastructure, lets talk about actually rebuilding roads and highways and filling sidewalks and internet and creating space to live in and work safely. Ensure access to healthcare and clean water and air. These are all things we need to do. Jennifer palmieri, and professor, i want to begin with you. I want to get your reaction of what the president said in Tulsa Today. Thank you, lawrence, i found it to be a fascinating speech. On the one hand there is this attempt to renarrate and tell a different kind of story about americas past, to reveal the truth. The number of clansmen and the way of details around the tulsa moment. It was almost as if it was a kind of explicit Counter Narrative to the cultural wars thats being waged by the republicans. There is a sense which President Bidens speech put forth this kind of claim to be quick about it. What we leave out of our stories actually reveal the limits of our conception of justice. If we tell a fuller story, a truer story, we actually can lay the Ground Work for a robust conception of justice, a robust view of justice. A second half of the speech, i dont think as i am precedented. I never heard a president in my lifetime speak like he did. I heard the remedy before even as he talked about the Infrastructure Bill. Yes, thats such a good point jennifer, that Professor Glaude just made. The Speech Works as a cohesive piece. You would not be able to go from a detailed description of what happened in that massacre to a detailed description of what President Biden want to do in his Infrastructure Bill. Hell take every opportunity to get his agenda in front of american voters and link it to whether it would be history or whatever that moment of the day is that he needs to link it to. The fact that hes able to do that shows how difficult the job is. It was not out of place to link the Infrastructure Bill which literally nuts and bolts to move large about of the Country Reckoning with race. There was another president , President Obama who had an interview this weekend and that was really insightful and of how we need to talk about this country. You see with biden, the Infrastructure Bill is not just about infrastructure, it is proing democracy can work and you can get this big thing done and america can do big things literally also while we are coming to reckon with and how he leads this moment is so important especially after four years it was so careless and reckless. Professor glaude, he talked about Voting Rights of the speech he delivered today. I am glad you reminded me of the passage where he talked about actual members of the senate who were members of the clan while serving in the senate. Members of the house who were members of the clan while serving In The House. Robert byrd who was Joe Manchins predecessor in the united States Senate as a young man and he was not he graduated from High School and did not go to college. He was not in the clan for a long time. He certainly was not in the clan when he was running for the senate. That was part of West Virginia History and so much of what Joe Biden is urging the congress to do depends on Joe Manchin and how he sees the urgency of this moment. Yes, lawrence, i think well have to actually see over the coming days whether or not manchin is being a good faith actor. He thinks the filibuster is key to the senate working although many of us believed that the greatest body of the country is already broken for a variety of reasons. Every term when there is been good Faith Gesture to reach across the isle to republicans, we see this change. They draw it out and try to negotiate and we dont get much. How much evidence does a Joe Manchin need to see those people across the isle are not necessarily good faith actors or they farewell may be as i believe them to be the new redeemers. Those are the same folks who at The End of the radical reconstruction who sought dismantle what radical reconstruction gained after the war. I know the politics of west virginia, we have to engage what manchin committed to and whats motivating him. I think this moment will make it clear. Jennifer, the house White House is suggesting june 9th, a soft date for knowing exactly where we stand on infrastructure. Are we going alone as democrats or will we have some republicans . The president is going to meet with west virginia. I think they are right to continue to pursue this in a bipartisan way. The truth is there is enormous bipartisan support within the country for this infrastructure package. The manner in which Joe Biden does his job really matters, showing the public that there is bipartisan support even if the country is not in d. C. For this. They dont want to get deep in june without moing into legislation. They want to start trying. Jennifer and Professor Glaude. Coming up, well Caleb Gayle will join us what happened in tulsa. On may 31st, 1921, tulsa oklahoma, a violent mob attacked greenwood, home to what was then called black wall street. Many american history classes in High School still did not include that story. Today in the Greenwood Neighborhood in tulsa, oklahoma, the president of the united states told that story. Through the night and in to the morning, the mob Terrorized Greenwood and tortured with guns and a mob Tied A Black Man by a waist with his head banging along the pavement as they drove off. A murder black family drove over the fence of their homes outside. Couples knelt by the beds and theyre shot in the back of their heads. Private planes dropping explosives, the first assault on american city here in tulsa. My fellow americans this was not a riot, this was a massacre. That applause was for the truth. This was a massacre. President biden outlined what should be the new rule for american High School history class. We cant just choose to learn what we want to know. And not what we should know. We should know, the good and the bad and everything. Thats what great nations do. They come to terms with their dark sides. We are a great nation. Joining us now from tulsa is Caleb Gayle. A fellow at new america. He wrote the story 100 years after Tulsa Massacre and mr. Cobb at columbia university. Hes an msnbc political analyst who just returned from reporting in tulsa. Let me both, let me give both of you this, Caleb Gayle, beginning with you, you heard what the president said today. I want to give you an opportunity to react to the president s speech or any other aspect of this 100 years marking of this tragic event. Yeah, i mean, lawrence, thank you so much. It is hard to under estimate the potency of the president of the united states accounting for americans and the World Exactly what happened. And the World Ex what happened. In doing so oftentimes with Graphic Detail that i frankly as a Native Tulsan growing up in High School never heard. Theres something potent about that. But also then kind of illustrates the enormity of not just the damage done but the lingering effects of the damage and whether or not the Policy Solutions mentioned are really enormous enough to deal with challenges still faced by so many Black Tulsans, its powerful to hear the truth, especially after four years with a president who obfuscated the truth. But question remains are solutions as big as the history that we are standing against. Professional cobb, ive been wondering all day whats been going through your mind about this. A lot, obviously. And i think Calebs Point is well taken. But i do want to give a little bit of context. When you saw everybody Stand Up and applaud when he said this is not a riot but a massacre. This is important because President Biden was stepping squarely into the middle of a debate, among many debates roiling around the commemoration of what happened. There has been an attempt to soften the language by referring to this as a riot as opposed to a massacre. You can dictate where people stand on the issues by the language they were using to describe what happened 100 years ago today. And so Thats Part of it. Hes kind of settled that debate. In a bigger sense though, one of the things that disturbed me was conversations i had with people around tulsa, not all the people said this were white but people said well, you know, im not quite sure if things were as bad as theyre saying they were. Or did they really kill 300 people . Thats a little hard to believe. And it is really not about what President Biden said, but look at ugliness in the past, but we have to actually be willing to believe these things happen or else we leave ourselves open to them being recommitted in the present and future. Thats exactly why i chose that particular piece of the video of the president s speech, he was going into those real details and not flinching. I want to take a moment to listen to voila fletcher, 107 years old, one of the last living victims of this massacre. She testified on May 19th to a house hearing. Lets listen to what she said. I will never forget the violence of the white mob when we left our home. I still see black men being shot, black bodies lying in the street, i still smell smoke and see fire. I still see black businesses being burned, i still hear airplanes flying overhead. I hear the screams, i have lived through the massacre every day. Our country may forget this history, but i cannot. Caleb, your extraordinary piece about this 100yearold event, its amazing to consider there are still some living witnesses to it. Without a doubt. I mean not only did she did Mother Fletcher Mention that america has a tendency of forgetting this sort of event, its that that forgetting was rather intentional. It was the goal of the city of tulsa to ensure that the stories that Mother Fletcher would tell would never reach outside the bounds of tulsa. The goal was ensure that people still wanted to flood into this booming city, as President Biden mentioned earlier today. The goal was to ensure they made promises of restitution without spelling out what it would look like. Reason that Mother Fletcher and her Brother And Mother Randall Are Advocating in the way they are is because for so long their stories were silenced on purpose and their desire is not just for stories to be told but stories told might indicate what we might owe them. Thats the reason why theres such incredible living testaments to not just the damage done but lingering damage. Frankly Black Tulsans on average live six years less than most white tulsans. Cant thank you enough for joining us this important night. Really appreciate it. Thank you. Thank you.
