According to police, an suv rolled in, three people got out armed with Assault Rifles and firearms and started shooting, in the words of the Miamidade Police department director, shooting indiscriminately. He called it coldblooded murder. We see investigators casing the scene behind me. You can see a couple of them over my shoulder, detectives with ties and white shirts on. Other folks in uniform going through dozens of evidence markers strewn on the ground outside. 20 people at least were hospitalized. 12 of them were selftransported, another eight were taken there by local fire officials. Weve spoken with multiple parents who have had the describe the sense of safety being shattered for them. Their children, who they describe as good kids, educated kids, coming out for a Night Of Entertainment and ending up being shot in some cases in the abdomen, in other cases in their legs, recovering now, or trying to. Here is what we heard from a couple of those parents. Dont let it be mine. And then it turned out to be mine. You never know what it feels like until you actually have something jerked away from you. My son, my only son, my only child. Hes not a statistic. Hes a graduate from college last year, so hes educated. And he was going out with his educated cousin to just celebrate the weekend. Reporter alex, the gun violence archive, which notes Mass Shootings as four or more people injured or killed, so far this year counts more than 230. There were 600 plus last year, in the middle of a pandemic, of course. The most recent ones from minneapolis, now miami, atlanta, san jose, the names stacking up once again. A cnbc personality just tweeted out a 100,000 reward for anyone who can help find the individuals responsible for the heinous act that occurred in this hometown of miami. There are three people right now who police say have committed this atrocity and are still at large. Were waiting to find out when we get more information from the police department. On a positive note, marcus, good on you, thats fantastic that youve done that and given some incentive. Let me ask you, does this seem targeted or random . And describe again what we know about the assailants. There were three. Did they stay in the car, get out of the car . What do we know . Reporter the exact words used by the Miamidade Police department were targeted. It was not a random act of violence, it was meant to happen here. The three individuals involved got out of the car and started shooting. One of the parents we spoke with today said her kids, her son, her nephew, were standing outside, couldnt get inside the venue because it happened so quickly. So its not clear how many were shot outside the banquet, how many might have been shot inside. We know it happened very quickly and they were gone. The point, it happened quickly, yes, there were three gunman, but the fact that it happened very quickly and at least 22 people were shot, two fatally, does that indicate the presence of Assault Weapons . Reporter police are saying there were Assault Weapons being used or assaultlike firearms. We have not gotten further information specifically about what kind of weapons were used or how many bullets were actually discharged. But i can tell you firsthand, having seen how many evidence markers there are in the middle of this pavement, it was dozens. One mother i spoke with said she heard five or six gunshots go off, this woke her up in the middle of the night. But the evidence here indicates its far more than just that. The two deceased, do we know, were they concertgoers . Do we know if they were intending to go into that concert and had gotten in or came out . Reporter police have so far declined to add that level of specificity as to who died. We do know, alex, there is a third person in critical condition. We have reached out to the local hospitals to try to get an update on that and to find out who the deceased were. Thats still information that hasnt come to light just yet. I have to tell you, sam, i appreciate so much you trying to make sense of the absolutely unbelievable situation going on in this country once again, another mass shooting. Thank you very much for giving it a for effort. Moving on to the Breaking News this time out of wilmington, delaware. In just the last hour the president delivering his first memorial day speech as commander in chief. This comes as the first family mourns and remembers the president s oldest son beau biden who passed away six years ago today. Here is part of that speech. America is unique. Its an idea. Unlike any other country in the world, it is formed based on an idea. Almost every other country is based on a religion, a geography, an ethnicity. Not us. Were based on an idea, that we hold these truths to be selfevident, that all men and women are created equal. Were unique in the world. I had a long conversation, two hours, recently, with president xi, making it clear to him that we could do nothing but speak out for human rights around the world because thats who we are. Ill be meeting with President Putin in a couple of weeks in geneva, making it clear that we will not, we will not stand by and let him abuse those rights. Joining me now is washington congressman adam smith, chairman of the House Armed Services committee. Congressman, big welcome to you on this memorial day weekend. Sir, im curious, your reaction to the remarks that President Biden just made there about the specifics and the honoring of this day. Two big pieces, one is to remember all the people who ack ackry sacrificed, who lost their lives in the service of this country. Joe biden knows that all too well from his sons service in the military, and thats what this day is about, the people who give their families, its an incredible sacrifice to protect our country and we need to remember that. On foreign policy, as the president has since he started campaigning for the job, has made it clear hes going to break from President Trump, that the u. S. Is going to be present in the world, were going to work towards the goal of protecting human rights and Greater Peace and stability. Were not going to step back from that. As President Biden understands, this is not even primarily about the military. This is about engaging. This is about diplomacy. This is about working with partners. But the u. S. Has a unique role in the world. At this point thats not a choice. Thats just the way it is and we need to understand that role. And i think the president does. Im curious, as we reflect and honor everyone who has paid the ultimate sacrifice serving our country, how do you think americans can best express their gratitude to the Service Members who work to keep this nation safe . I think certainly to support the Service Members and their families. Theres a lot of work to be done to make sure they have access to health care. Ptsd is a huge problem. Making sure that Mental Health issues are addressed. Veterans, when they leave the military, serving in the military is unlike anything else, and when you leave you sort of have to reenter society. To help and support not just the Service Member but their family as well in all of that, to be sure. Then i think theres the larger point, honor the country, honor the sense of community. I think every Service Member will tell you that they are doing their job to make sure that america is preserved as a strong, prosperous country. Anything you can do to respect your neighbors, to be kind, to bring our country closer together and to make it stronger and a better place, i think that honors the Service Members service as strongly as anything we can do. On the heels of the bulk of what youve just said, sir, i want to switch gears and talk about the Senate Republicans blocking the creation of an independent January 6th Commission. Have you heard rational reasoning from your republican colleagues as to why they oppose this commission . No. Kevin mccarthy and Mitch Mcconnell have made a pretty clear calculation, and that is to buy into the trump cult, to buy into the idea that trump will turn out enough voters so that republicans can win, and therefore anything that potentially embarrasses donald trump, theyre not going to do. And its really sad. Certainly there are republican colleagues of mine who dont buy into this. Liz cheney and Adam Kinzinger come to mind. They understand that conservative values have nothing to do with the cult that is donald trump. But sadly, the leadership in the house and the senate has decided either to support the former president s ridiculous approach or simply to do a cynical calculation that its their best political play for power. Either way, it is very, very dangerous. And you hear the rhetoric, they want to act like june 6th didnt happen, they want to wipe it from history. And just that degree of lies and just creating a Fantasy World makes it impossible to address policies that we need. We should look at january 6 honestly and figure out why it happened and how to prevent Something Like that from happening again. They dont want that examination. In terms of picking up on you saying its dangerous, this mentality, theres a new poll that reveals just over 20 of republican respondents say the january 6th attack on the capitol was a, quote, justified attack. What is your response to that and do you think some of your republican colleagues bear some responsibility for that line of thinking permeating our society . I dont think theres any question about that. It all started with, you know, trump, even before the election, wanting to undermine our election. He basically said if i dont win, its unfair. The bedrock of this country is rules and law and order. The idea that we set up a structure for how were going to function and we all accept the outcome. President trump decided that he didnt want to do that because he would stay in power at any cost so he wanted to undermine the election. The republicans went along with it. And you tell a lie often enough, some people are going to start to believe it. And that has certainly happened in the republican base. There are so many issues that we could be talking about here. How do we get out of the pandemic, how do we deal with the economy, the budget, how do we deal with the immigration challenges we face. We still have a huge Health Care Crisis in this country. Income inequality, the concentration of wealth is really damaging the concept of equality of opportunity. And joe biden is putting out all kinds of policies to address this. Weve seen it with the covid response. Weve seen it with the infrastructure package. That is what we should be focused on. Instead, the republicans are focused on i hate to keep saying it, but the cult of donald trump. The idea that they can make donald trump into some exalted leader and get enough people to follow them in that effort to get back into power. But we have issues to deal with, not donald trump. I have to say, what you said, quoting donald trump, basically sentiments, if i dont win its unfair, i envision a kindergartener on the school playground. I mean, come on. What happens in terms of democrats, what can they do next, whether there be a select committee to investigate the insurrection at the capitol, and if so, will you support one . Yes. Ive spoken to Speaker Pelosi about this numbers. Theres a practical aspect as well. This involves all manner of different issues, there are seven or eight Standing Committees in the house that arguably have jurisdiction over this and are looking at different aspects of the security situation, what happened with the response, both from the fbi and the Attorney General and the department of defense. If you have like seven or eight different committees working on it, its not focused. So part of the idea behind the commission was were going to focus this, we would have a group to look at all of it. A select committee can do that as well, and i think we should. The shame of it is it should be bipartisan, its stronger if its bipartisan. Democrats have some perspectives on this from our angle, it would be good to have a balanced approach to this to really get a better understanding of whats going on, both with january 6th but then with the rise of extremism, the rise of white supremacy, right wing extremism, antigovernment extremism, whats going on there and how do we get our arms around it. That could definitely use bipartisan support. But we have to do the select committee, i think thats a better approach than having seven or eight different committees sort of stepping over each other. Congressman, unfortunately i have to go, but not without asking you quickly, im looking at a headline which reads the u. S. Is planning for possible evacuation of afghan interpreters. Is there anything that can derail that . The only thing that can derail it is logistics. Its not easy, its difficult, there have to be laws in place to get it done, but we have to protect those who supported us and worked with us. Amen to that. Adam smith, thank you, we appreciate it. Meantime, President Biden will visit oklahoma tuesday to commemorate the 100year anniversary of the tulsa race massacre. The greenwood district, commonly known as black wall street, was a Thriving Community for black professionals before a white mob destroyed it on may 31, 1921. The true death toll is unknown but historians estimate it could be as high as 300. Nearly 200 businesses were demolished. Some 10,000 black residents displaced. Those responsible never brought to destruction. The destruction never replaced. And now a century later, tulsa residents are working to raise awareness to recognize the victims, the survivors, and their families. Lets go to nbcs trymaine lee, hes there shining a spotlight on all of this. Trymaine, what are you hearing from people, who do they want to see done on this solemn anniversary . Reporter thank you very much for having me, alex. Ive been here reporting in tulsa for a couple of weeks off and on. There say heaviness, a weightiness to the air here. This community has weathered so much, you have the violence of the massacre and every generation after that, gentrification. Advocates Say Something in this community was broken long ago. I talked to some of those folks. Lets take a listen. You didnt read it in a book. You didnt see it in a movie. You witnessed it yourself in reality. History can break your heart. Repair me. Repair me as a person, as a citizen, whatever that takes, whatever it looks like. Were talking about going on four generations of tragedy. Reporter alex, sometimes i think we think of history as some sort of brainy, Black And White snapshot when in reality history is still being lived today. This is a story still being written. The people in this community who descend from those survivors and who unfortunately did not survive, theyre trying to piece back the success and wealth and everything that was stolen from them 100 years ago on that very violent day. Trymaine, thank you for your reporting and the passion you bring to it. Tonight well hear more of the story youre wonderfully telling. Book on black wall street on 10 00 p. M. Well, thats not the video we were looking for right there. Well bring more of that to you. We do know todays speech comes as the president receives high parks in two polls well talk about. A survey by Reuters Ipsos shows 52 approval, and fox news showing even more, 54 . Peter baker is the chief White House Correspondent for the New York Times and our sunday regular, im happy to say, peter, thank you for joining me. Lets look at the president s Approval Ratings. Theyve been pretty consistent since he took office. How much attention are aides paying in the white house, have they defined a strategy and they say, were sticking to that . Look, every white house pays attention to polls, and these are obviously pretty healthy, particularly in a time of great polarization, right . A time when were so divided, to get any kind of Approval Rating over 50 represents a victory. Its not historically high, its not as good as george w. Bush had or Ronald Reagan or jimmy carter in their early days in the presidency. But theyre higher than trump had. Thats right, the first thing i was thinking was, look how partisan this country has become, there seems to be a nonexistent middle anymore. Do these numbers reflect that . I think they do. They reflect that we are basically very static in where we are. President trump never for a single day of his presidency had more than 50 of support from the american public. He basically had within a range of high 30s to low 40s throughout his presidency, basically said very static. What were seeing so far is until the first few months, President Bidens are staying very static, at a higher level. The country is roughly around 52, 55 biden and 40 trump, and theyre sticking with it. Thats basically where we were for the last five years. Nobody has changed their minds regardless of all the things that have happened, covid, january 6, the country has remained in a static place, very polarized, i think. So on the heels of that observation, we have the president trying to take a bipartisan approach when it comes to congress on, say, infrastructure, the american jobs plan. How long will democrats wait while he tries to negotiate, weve heard about all these meetings, he brings Republican Leaders into the white house, they chat in the oval office for a while but nothing seems to really happen. I mean, yeah, theres been some incremental movement closer together, emphasis on incremental. Is there a Tipping Point do you think for the president where he says, got to go it alone . There is, i think. We dont know exactly when its going to be. There is a strong memory in this white house of what happened to barack obama in 2009 when democrats concluded he had waited too long to get bipartisan support, that they shouldnt make that mistake, they should push forward based on their very narrow majorities in congress. Bidens instincts are more bipartisan than obamas were. He is more patient than other president s because he did serve so long in the senate, he knows it can take a while. As long as he thinks theres a genuine chance, hell keep trying. You hear some positive noises coming out of more moderate democrats, to the extent there are any in the senate, praising him for his willingness to listen and his instincts toward negotiation. There is pressure on the left on President Biden to knock it off and to go ahead and move forward on this stuff because they want to keep momentum going because they worry that at a certain point, their majorities begin to become harder to keep together in the house and senate and theres a lot of impatience i think in the party. President biden for the moment is giving it a few more days or weeks. So we have moderate democratic senator joe manchin who certainly expressed his disappointment after republicans rejected the january 6 commission bill. Is there any sense, peter, that the gop blocking this will have manchin reconsidering filibuster reform . Does he at least now feel he has political license to do that . Well, it certainly fuels the argument on behalf of advocates of repealing the filibuster. Manchin says he hasnt changed his mind on that so far. Well see if that changes. The filibuster means it requires 60 votes to pass any bill. That has thwarted democratic efforts to pass Voting Rights legislation, immigration, gun control. Obviously this infrastructure plan, if it doesnt go through on reconciliation, would have to get votes its not going to get. There is an impatience on the part of many in the Democratic Party to get rid of the filibuster. I even saw some republicans who have said on twitter over the last couple of days that given the blockage of this January 6th Commission, its hard to imagine a party would say were not even going to examine this, but for the moment i think you dont have enough to push through a change in the filibuster, for the moment thats not where the votes are. You know the president dropped his Budget Proposal on friday, and in a Washington Post article, reporter heather long said, releasing it right before the week was a senate that the white house want looking for a lot of attention. Do you agree . What is the strategy behind the timing of it . Well, its possible. These budget plans traditionally have not meant all that much. Presidents tend to send budgets up and congress tends to do what they will with it. But the president s marker that hes laying down is that its time for government to get bigger, to spend more, be more involved in peoples lives in terms of things like education, childcare, infrastructure, climate change, social spending. Thats going to be a big debate, thats a Big Change Over the last few decades when the reagan mantra was government was the problem, not the solution, a mantra that in fact, you know, convinced Many Democrats as well to say the era of Big Government is over. Biden says its time to move in the other direction, his budget is another way of saying that, and asking congress to go along. Wouldnt be a sunday without you, peter baker, thanks for the chat, my friend. A new poll shows 80 of americans wont travel this Holiday Weekend. New today, were learning more about the move by American Airlines to delay the return of booze on board. The decision prompted by an uptick in unruly and sometimes violent passengers. A memo from american citing deeply disturbing situations aboard aircraft. Blayne alexander joins us from atlanta. Blayne, good day to you. Youve heard some reaction to the decision, right . Reporter absolutely, alex. Were talking about this disturbing trend were seeing, since january 1, in fact according to the faa, weve now seen more than 2,500 incidents of passengers behaving badly while in flight or on board. More than 75 of the incidents have to do with people who just dont want to abide by mask requirements. The latest of course is what we saw on southwest airlines, a Flight Attendant had two of her teeth knocked out. One of those passengers is now facing charges for that incident. We saw this during the pandemic, the airlines essentially said they were going to limit the service or limit sales of alcohol because they wanted to limit interactions between passengers and Flight Attendants. But now southwest and American Airlines have decided to extend that ban because of this unruly behavior. Here is some new reaction from the head of the Flight Attendants union who says this is ridiculous and needs to stop. What we are saying is that the federal government should really step in here and pause Alcohol Sales in the airports and on the airplanes for a period. This is really a problem, its an epidemic. Flight attendants have to deal with it every day, a constant combative attitude even with incidents that dont rise to being reported to the faa. Reporter people who are front line workers, Grocery Store workers, publicfacing employees, are having to deal with this, having to tell customers they have to wear a mask, dealing with people who push back and sometimes are violent in that pushback. All of this is coming as were seeing the biggest Travel Weekend weve seen, alex, since the start of the pandemic. You see the constant cars behind me, i was here in this exact place a year ago, and its Night And Day difference. So as americans are expected to travel by the millions, about 37 million expected to take some sort of a trip, of course there is this growing concern about the behavior and thats why american took that step that they did this weekend, alex. Understandably so. Thank you very much, good to see you, blayne alexander. Lets go to a memorial day without masks in many places unless youre on an airplane, made possible by declining Covid Infections in all but eight states, just over 11,500 new cases reported nationwide in the last 24 hours. We have a team across the Country Tracking Life after lockdown and the first maskfree Holiday Weekend. Nbcs ellison parry, and cal perry. And the fans in boston, fenway park reopened at full capacity. Cal, youre at another ballpark thats following their lead, apparently. Look at the crowd behind you. Reporter yes, the nationals could get 15,000 in here today. Theyre still looking at about 36 capacity. Theyll open up in about two weeks to 100 capacity. Here is a list of the teams currently offering 100 capacity. The houston astros, atlanta braves, arizona diamondbacks, and the Boston Red Sox which went to 100 capacity just the other day. In the next couple of weeks youll see the baltimore orioles, your premier league team, i know that will upset everybody around me, so it goes. The indians and the reds, and on june 4, the philadelphia phillies. This is made possible by vaccinations, this is vaccination story. The majority of teams in the league have at least 85 of their players and staff vaccinated, that will allow them to get of covid protocols, specifically masks in the dugout. Major League Baseball hopes this is a bit of a trial run for july 4, alex. How are the stadiums returning for all the fans coming back, and what kind of things can fans expect when they do go back to the ballpark . Reporter one of the interesting things is theyre basically demoing a lot of new stuff. In the gate behind me, you can only enter the gate behind me with a red ticket. If its a blue ticket, tough go through another entrance. You can only order concessions from your seat right now. Theyre trying out things made technologically possible because of the pandemic, protocols that the nationals, the team behind me, want to put in place. Next time include the l. A. Dodgers, got it . Reporter next hour. Thank you. The grand canyon is seeing an influx of tourists this memorial day weekend. Nbcs Ellison Barber is there at the grand canyon in arizona. Ellison, whats the story here . I understand you have an rv and im curious what that experience has been like and what other campers are telling you. Reporter yeah, so a lot of campers are telling us that they are traveling in these rvs. And for many of them, they say this type of travel is a new thing for them, an idea they got because of the pandemic and concerns about air travel and concerns just about staying in hotels. Groups like rv share tell us they have seen demand for rv rentals just skyrocket. Theyre seeing six times more demand for rentals today than prepandemic levels. And right now, the grand canyon, they seem to be on track to hit prepandemic visitation levels. Alex, with views like this, its easy to understand why people want to flock to parks like this. We havent run into any visitors who have traveled internationally which prior to the pandemic, were told happened quite a bit. Most of the people weve seen are americans who say concerns about pandemic travel made them realize how much Natural Beauty we have in this country. Here is more of what we heard. Last year was personally tough for me. I love to interact with people. Im excited to see so Many Americans traveling, doing it safely, and to see the National Parks begin to open up and provide services again. When youre in this, in this environment, it feels like youre back to 2018. Ill be very excited when the camper is pulled in front. Its better than it was, because you had to wear masks, couldnt go out, couldnt fly, you really like in lockdown. Then you just go somewhere and have fun. Reporter triple a says they expect about 37 Million People to travel this memorial day holiday. About 34 million of those travelers are doing it in cars. And that includes rvs like this one in that count for many people. They are telling us this is a thing they didnt even know they liked and now that they tried it in the pandemic, they say theyll keep doing it. Overall, Holiday Travel this weekend is set to be up by about 60 compared to this time last year, alex. Thats a great story, thank you so much for bringing it to us. That camper looks kind of swank. Good job, Ellison Barber, appreciate it. Whats happening in texas today may serve as a warning to all of us and could very well be a threat to american democracy. Hows that . Its next. brother hi sis sister youre late brother fashionably late. sister we can not be late. brother theres a road right there. brother thats a cat. Wait, just hold madis headpiece. sister no. I heard about prevagen and then i started taking it about two years now. Started noticing things a little sharper, a little clearer. I feel like its kept me on my game. Im able to remember things. Id say give it a try. Prevagen. Healthier brain. Better life. I became a sofi member because i needed to consolidate my credit card debt. I needed just one simple way to pay it all off. It was an easy decision to apply with sofi loans, just based on the Interest Rate and how much i would be saving. There was only one that stood out and one that actually made sense and that was sofi personal loans. It felt so freeing. I felt like i was finally out of this neverending trap of interest and payments and debt. Were tracking some Breaking News from the Texas Statehouse where lawmakers in the House Chamber will reconvene shortly, expected to pass some of the most restrictive voting laws in the country following an allnight debate. The texas house is expected to approve it. Texas Governor Greg Abbott is expected to sign it today. It bans drivethrough voting, empowers partisan poll watchers, adds voter i. D. Requirements for mailin ballots and even allows entire elections to be voided if, quote, illegally cast ballots outnumber the votes needed to change the outcome. This in a state that President Trump won in the 2020 election. Republicans across 14 states have passed restrictive voting laws since Donald Trumps loss including florida. Texas just the latest battleground in the gops nationwide effort. Joining me now, juanita toliver. Juanita, what goes through your mind when you see what texas is doing, pushing this bill through the senate in the dead of night on a Holiday Weekend . Alex, the first thing that goes through my mind is theyre giving Voter Suppression a lot more time and energy than theyre giving the electrical grid that failed texans for weeks during a storm earlier this year. That lets you know how important it is for the Texas State Legislature to get these Voter Suppression bills through. The margin between democrat candidates and republican candidates have been narrowing in texas for years. The way theyre responding is to join in on the copy and paste Voter Suppression bill tactic were seeing across the country. I appreciate you putting that map up of the 14 states that have enacted these types of bills because this is taking a surgical approach, making it harder for people to get to ballot boxes and get to the polls in elections. Its also going to have a negative impact on our democracy. These bills are targeted. We know who will lose out here, black, native american, aapi voters who have been voting in droves in recent election cycles. Its going to be people who really benefitted from those drop boxes and drivethrough services as well as voters with disabilities who absolutely depend on those drivethrough services to cast their ballots. Lets put that map back up one more time as we look at the broad expanse with these 14 states thus far. How does this affect the midterms in 2020 in terms of the outcome . Yeah, alex, look, im looking at florida, im looking at georgia, im looking at indiana. These are key states. These are states where also, lets keep in mind, republicans will have the pen when it comes to drawing the new maps with redistricting. So not only are republicans taking the redistricting to another level to try to box out democrats and redraw districts in a way that benefits them, theyre also passing these Voter Suppression bills. Weve seen them go through georgia, weve seen them go through florida and plenty of other states that are going to make it that much harder for voters. When youre creating barriers for voters, that means fewer of them are going turn out, that means fewer of them are going to put forth the effort to overcome those barriers. When you get to the basic premise around organizing, its that much harder to get Accurate Information out to voters so they know what they do need and how to be able to cast their ballots safely on election day. So this is absolutely going to have an impact not only on the 2022 midterms, but look ahead to 2024, because alex, i dont expect this to slow down, right . Expect these bills to keep coming through states, expect them to make it harder, as we get closer not only to midterms but the next president ial election. Thats why people are looking at congress for that muchneeded help to pass federal legislation like the for the people act, like the john lewis Voting Rights act, to make sure that people across this country can cast their ballots and do it safely without any of these wild barriers that were seeing being passed through State Legislatures across the country. Theres another thing republicans in a number of states are taking action on, the blocking of teaching the Critical Race Theory in schools. First of all, juanita, what does the term Critical Race Theory mean to you and why are republicans against it . In my mind, Critical Race Theory is a Legal Framework that talks about how there are laws that try to do a lot to try to compensate for some of the racial imbalances we see in this country that did not meet the mark. Thats where the framework originally comes from. The way its applied here is pretty much republicans batting down anything that they find unattractive in terms of truth and the history of this country. Its another form of suppression on how we discuss race in this country. Race still impacts everything we experience every day, whether its laws, whether its policing, whether its just the way we live our lives. Republicans are batting down any unattractive truths about our history and we see this through this attack on the 1619 project, we see this in any type of rejection of anything that calls out racist norms and White Supremacist norms. Nikole hannahjones is considering legal action against the university of North Carolina over the failure to give her tenure. 619 Tarheel Alums put their name to this ad supporting her. Juanita, youre a tarheel alum, are you supporting this . Theres a lot, i wasnt going to read the whole list. Full disclosure, i did donate to the fund so get that ad placed in the news and observer. It is absolutely imperative that our voices are heard on this. That is the issue, all we want is hannahjones voice to be heard, for the 1619 project to be heard and taught around the country because its critical that our country knows the truth of its origins, knows the truth of its history. I say that as we near the 100th Anniversary of the tulsa massacre because a recent survey showed 83 of oklahoma residents didnt even know about that massacre, werent taught about it in school either. It just emphasizes the point, even if the truth is unattractive, even if its hard to listen to, it should still be discussed. So im thrilled that Nikole Hannahjones is considering legal action here because the Board Of Trustees needs to provide an explicit reason for rejecting her Tenure Appointment when she had the support of not only the chancellor, the dean of the school, and plenty of alumni and students who want her voice to be heard. This is another form of suppression that we know is coming from the gop, that we know is coming from trumps policies where he wanted to outlaw any discussion of race or Antidiscriminatory Practices in the workplace. This all stems from trump and the gop using his same playbook, we dont want any unattractive truths and were willing to lie to the end. The Board Of Trustees at unc has received that same petition for tenure and hopefully theyll reconsider their decision here. We shall see. Juanita toliver, come see me any time, i appreciate your input. Coming up, questions about how a bitterly divided can move forward. [lazer beam and sizzling sounds] as rpublican lawmakers work to move past the insurrection, new polling could explain why. A survey by yahoo ugov shows one in five republicans, 21 , feel the capitol riot was a, quote, justified act. Joining me now, Richle Richie and david jolly, former republican congressman from florida and an msnbc political contributor. As i welcome you both, thanks for being here, guys. David, you first here. What do you say to the one in five republicans polled who view this attack on january 6th as justified . That they are listening to their political leaders. In isnt happening in a vacuum, and we can certainly question the judgment of those one in five and another one in five are unsure whether it was justified. Only half resoundingly denounce the event. This isnt happening in a vacuum. Clearly we know Donald Trumps role with the bully pulpit in creating the Energy Around the january 6th events and also rank and file men and women in the United States senate. You often hear republicans are lying to voters. One of liz cheneys classic lines is that or minute romneys, excuse me, and i believe liz cheney, they have to start telling the truth to the voters. I will also say an important number is the number of women left the Republican Party. Are you include this when you put this on the responsibility of republicans shoulders, are you also going to include those who are silent about this . Not the ones who are espousing views that donald trump may share and the like, but those people that stay silent are equally to carry the burden of this . Without question. Look, these were republican voters, republican supporters who took to capitol hill. Thats why republicans dont want a focus of the January 6th Commission to be on that. Whether they are speaking out in favor of the events of january 6th or simply remaining silent, complicit, all of them. Flip side. This same poll is finding 07 of republicans put some or great deal of responsibility of this attack on leftwing protesters trying to make trump look bad, despite the fbi and even Kevin Mccarthy calling that false. Only 41 blame the actual Trump Supporters that were caught on video attacking the capitol. What do you make of that . Well, im not surprised. They have absolutely no accountability whatsoever. Look, i think that we have to be mindful that, you know, the foundation for the deadly insurrection on january 6th started many, many months before this. Lets go back to september where you had roger stone, one of trumps advisers saying trump should invoke the Insurrection Act or even martial law. And another adviser, Michael Caputo who worked on the Trump Campaign in 2016 saying there would be violence if trump lost and that, you know, when he refuses when donald trump refused to concede that the shooting begins. This is the kind of language that the Republican Party has consistently supported and used. And they have not spoken out against it. So im not surprised these numbers, these people are brainwashed and its very concerning as to what will happen in the next election if donald trump decides to run again. Even before that, david, how does the are there any republicans that will play a political price in the midterms . You know, its a fascinating question. Historically republicans should do well in the midterms pipts the first two years of a president in the opposing party. This cycle will test that historic trend, if you will, because the themes of this midterm will be such so evolving around democracy and protection of democracy. There are a lot of Key Senate Races that will be a push, almost a tossup. The question is, do the American People trust democrats more in this environment or republicans. That could decide a lot of these key races. I want to get specific on that with the midterms with you. The hill is listing nine senate seats they believe put democrats in control of congress in question, including the seats held by retiring republican senator pat toomey of pennsylvania, richard burr, rob portman, seats belonging to democrats like georgias. Where do you see democrats winning in 2022 . I certainly think theyre going to hold onto georgia. What youve seen happen in georgia has been phenomenal. My concern is democrats are not doing enough to get people energized about the midterm election. I think a lot of people have gotten comfortable now that you have joe biden and Kamala Harris in office. So, we need to see that same energy from the democrats being pushed for people to participate in the midterm elections and let them understand how important this is, when on the other side you have redistricting. Its very concerning and i think democrats have got to do more to get people back out there to the polls and voting because if not, unfortunately, we may see a situation where democrats are having to fight all over again to get anything done, much like theyre doing now.
