Amanda, Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/senator-schumer'>Senator Schumer says he might bring the bill back to the floor. How . Reporter thats right. He says its within his power to force republican senators to vote when he feels its the appropriate time to do so. But keep in mind this commission was blocked by senate republicans over political motivations. We saw that play out with Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/senate-minority-leader'>Senate Minority Leader Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/mitch-mcconnell'>Mitch Mcconnell saying to his members that he felt it could be disadd it could hurt them politically if they continue with this messaging looking into Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/january-6th'>January 6th, especially as they eye the 2022 midterms. With in being blocked, not having ten republican senators onboard, there were just six republican senators that did vote to proceed with the motion forward. Those includes senators ben sasse, Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/rob-part'>Rob Part man, bill cassidy, lisa murkowski, mitt romney, and susan collins. I should note that senator pat toomey, the republican of pennsylvania, indicated tHrough a spokesperson he would have voted yes had he been present but he had a Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/family-commitment'>Family Commitment and couldnt participate. That would have been the seventh vote. Again not hitting the tenvote tHreshold. Senate Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/majority-leader'>Majority Leader schumer not having those ten republicans to support this, he has not shied away. He has been vocal in disappointment with his republican colleagues. Here is some of what he said yesterday. We know whats going on here. They would have subpoena power, move things forward on a partisan basis. Well, you cued it up right there. Is yours one of those committees and will that be enough . Well, [ inaudible ] a select committee that looks into all the material. The fbi doesnt let the material be released. We have seen, unfortunately, and i have written the attorney general merrick garland, he appealed the ruling about logic in the memo concerning why they didnt diet president trump. I think there is a lot of information that Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/the-public'>The Public has a right to know. There is nothing more important in the last several decades make in 100 years. A Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/civil-war'>Civil War maybe about what went on with this involvement with russia, the department of justice, whether our president is a crook, and whether they were involved with russia to steal the election. A lot of people have been putting different references to them. When you look at that list, what do you call those folks . Republicans. Thank you. But a lot of people, including glenn kirschner, who says this is not what democracy looks like when you have 50 plus people who are voting, 56 people who voted for the formation and they are outvoted by a minority at 34 . Well, thats the procedure in the senate. You have to have 60 votes. At least a Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/60-40'>60 40 split. The filibuster should be broken. It was created to interfere with civil rights of african americans. It was created to keep the small states stronger and keep slavery around and not to tHreaten it. Thats what its mostly been used for. We have a majority, its the senate. What happens in this country, we have a majority in the house. We have a majority in almost Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/everything-else'>Everything Else. A super majority in the senate. The senate was originally elected by the people. It was appointed two senators appointed by the Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/state-legislature'>State Legislatures. Often the most powerful political financial and economic. Bankers controlled folks. The senate controlled by the their power of being two people for each state and not giving Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/people-representation'>People Representation based on population. As the years went on, they got the filibuster. 60 votes. That was enough votes to keep the south in control of not having to lose slavery. We need to get rid of that. They are enslaved to a Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/minority-rule'>Minority Rule that doesnt want progress in this country. Its a congressional matter. Do you believe we have been visited by aliens . Well, i dont think we have been visited by aliens. If we had, obviously, they werent interested in joining our culture and got the heck out of here. Lawmakers in texas say they are closer to a deal on a controversial restrictive Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/voting-bill'>Voting Bill. It is still not clear whats in the bill. A vote is expected this weekend. This would make texas the Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/14th-state'>14th State to enact restrictive voting laws. Msnbc reporter Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/gary-gum'>Gary Gum bach is in the Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/state-capitol'>State Capitol in austin. What are we hearing about this Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/voting-bill'>Voting Bill and where it stands . There is plenty of action right there in the statehouse behind you even though its the weekend. Reporter yeah, good morning. A lot of moving parts. Let me talk about how we got to this point. There are two bills. One in the statehouse, one in the state senate. They have to do with voting in the state of texas. They had a bunch of differences between the two of them. A conference in the beginning of may made up of members of both chambers came together Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/behind-closed-doors'>Behind Closed Doors to come up with a bill that worked for both sides to get a vote in the full, both chambers. We dont know whats in the bills. Nobody knows whats in the bills. The legislative session ends monday. So they have to do something in 48 hours or so for this to actually happen during this session. There is advocates on both sides of the aisle upset about two provisions. One is the Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/pole-watchers'>Pole Watchers and their ability to record when they are in polling places. Some say this will intimidate voters as they go into the ballot box. Others say this is simply a matter of ballot security. The other issue is the polling locations themselves, that one provision that has been talked about possibly being in this bill has to do with the locations of where they are and spreading them out across the state of texas. The advocates for voting has to say that this could disadvantage people in urban, black and brown communities that may have to go farther to get to their polling place. Looking more broadly, as you mentioned, you mentioned 14 states have enacted 22 new laws. This also comes as 48 states have almost 400 bills related to voting on the books right now across the country. So certainly its not just texas. Governor abbott for his part says he is going to sign this bill regardless of whats in it. People are saying by texas standards, this has been the most conservative legislation legislative session there in the state. Governor abbott is also set to sign another controversial bill any day. This one would loosen Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/gun-restrictions'>Gun Restrictions in texas. What more do we know about this . Reporter yeah, right now you do need a Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/license-or-permit'>License Or Permit to own a firm in the state of texas, to use a firearm in the state of texas. This would change that, make anyone 21 years or old without a prior conviction be able to do that without a license and permit. The Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/licensing-process'>Licensing Process takes weeks to months. So this would get rid of that completely. But it should be noted that texans for their part are not fully in support of this according to a Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/texas-tribune-poll'>Texas Tribune Poll out this month. They say 60 of texans want there to be a Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/license-or-permit'>License Or Permitting process before people own a firearm. All they wanted was some accountability. Yet here we are. I get it. There is nothing i can do. I cant stop this. I know the rules of the house very well. This is about to pass. But i couldnt stop tonight without sharing my disappointment. They didnt heed your warning. What worries you the most about this bill soon expected to become law . We have no accountability in this bill. The proponents tell you that, well, it still prohibits people that arent allowed to possess a firearm from carrying a firearm. But there is no way for us to know. There is no way to check. Quite honestly, the first time we are going to know whether someone was legally and lawfully carrying a firearm is the same time you are counting bodies. Thats horrible to think about, yeah, the moment you might know would be at a crime scene. A majority of texans surveyed actually oppose this bill. There is a survey from the Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/university-of-texas'>University Of Texas and the texas tribune. 59 were against unlicensed carry. So, obviously, coming off of the heels of san jose, i was there all week covering this, i watched as the employees walked across the street into the family reunification center, many covering their faces, crying. How are lawmakers passing bills when we are still dealing with this as a country, unfortunately, a weekly basis . Unlike most texans, i am a like most texans i am a gun owner. You believe in back ground checks, safe store am, you believe in training. You also believe its bizarre to walk down the street with an Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/assault-rifle'>Assault Rifle tied to your back. With issues like this, absolutism prevails. Thats why a poll can look like that. Once you get inside this building, the politics take over. Well, for example, senator, Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/ted-cruz'>Ted Cruz tweeted about this and said this is great news for lawabiding texans, but we know not all people, unfortunately, who Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/end-up'>End Up carrying out these mass murders are lawabiding. None of them are. No. This is, you know, senator cruz, this is one of the many issues he is wrong on. But these are, you know, the proponents will tell you, well, you can pass whatever law you want. If people are going to break the law, you cant stop them from breaking the law. I worked on Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/criminal-justice'>Criminal Justice issues my entire career. We dont tHrow out the laws because people continue to break them. You hold people accountable. Thats how you prevent bad things from happening. I want to ask you about the voting rights issues. According to the brennan center for justice, legislatures have enacted 22 laws restricting in voting in 14 states including your since the election setting a record for these laws since 2011. Who will this impact the most in your jurisdiction among your constituents, and what can folks do in states like yours where these laws have passed . Well, we are waiting a final version of the bill. I think quite restrictive, moves some of the most objectional pieces of the bill. Ultimately, this is targeting communities of color like mine and those restrictions are going to make it harder for people to vote and its going to encourage voter intimidation. Thats really at the core of this. If we remember what brought about the bills, its just based on a lie. Based on the lie that somehow the election in 2020 was stolen. So i have actually been traveling and i think what is going viral are rare cases. They are encouraging everybody to get vaccinated which is cite now. So the president is now having to make the decision of whether he is going to go it alone and encourage democrats to go the same route they use with covid relief, which is down the budget reconciliation path, which wouldnt require republicans, or continue these facetoface talks. We know, for example, some republican senators are supposed to come to the Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/white-house'>White House in the coming days. That may be the last round of negotiations before he makes this decision. But this real Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/budget-blueprint'>Budget Blueprint is notable because it would increase spending to the highest level since Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/world-war'>World War ii. Thats something that could remember in future budgets. This one only covers the next fiscal year. So interesting. This morning the investigation into former president Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/donald-trump'>Donald Trumps Business Dealings is intensifying to the point where there is a Special Grand Jury seated in Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/new-york'>New York. Yeah, that Grand Jury has its work cut out for them. Trying to sort out a complex case that could have trump, his kids, the organization, employees as well charged with shady backend deals, even tax fraud. Former assistant u. S. Attorney of the southern district of new Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/york-nick'>York Nick ackerman along with former federal Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/prosecutor-cynthia-oxney'>Prosecutor Cynthia Oxney to break it down. Cynthia, starting with you on all of this. A Grand Jury seating, tHree days a week for six months, its done routinely a lot of places. This is monumental in this case, isnt it . Yes, it really is. I mean, heres some things. There is a difference between Grand Juries in state and federal cases. In federal cases Grand Juries have a lot of power. You can bring a witness into the granl and really use that Grand Jury as a tool. You have less of that in the Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/state-system'>State System and its a lot more tricky because if you put a witness in the Grand Jury in new Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/york-state'>York State, you are giving that witness transactional immunity. Its very different from a federal system. And you also dont put in hearsay. So it takes more skill on some level and more strategy to use this Grand Jury to figure out what really was going on in the Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/trump-org'>Trump Org and their taxes. And it means its more important to flip a witness like weisselberg than maybe even in the initial stages of a federal Grand Jury. So its a very, its a big step. Its a predictable step given all the subpoenas that are out and the documents that have been produced, but dont wave your hand around and think, oh, this is going to be easy, we will put weisselberg, pretty soon trump will be in a jumpsuit. Thats not whats happening. There is a difficult process ahead. Trump released a statement blasting the prone calling it a continuation in the greatest Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/witch-hunt'>Witch Hunt in american history. Rudy giuliani echoed also. Lets listen to some of that. This is a vendetta. It should be illegal if it isnt illegal for a prosecutor to conduct a Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/witch-hunt'>Witch Hunt investigation trying to find a crime on you. Pick something somebody. Steve bannon, Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/donald-trump'>Donald Trump, rudy giuliani. And we have heard this before. We have had people on the show with inside knowledge of how the former president works and they say he is likely furious behind the scenes. If you had a client who is the subject of now this Grand Jury that was just seated, would you take your client back and say, hey, man, it doesnt look good . To go in and say this is a Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/witch-hunt'>Witch Hunt is not going to cut it. There is lots of smoke here that relates to not only tax fraud, but also Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/mortgage-fraud'>Mortgage Fraud to insurance fraud. Even to moneylaundering. There is new Press Reports that this 150 Million that Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/donald-trump'>Donald Trump invested in Golf Courses in scotland is being looked at as a possible funnel for Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/laundering-money'>Laundering Money for the russians. I think what they are looking at here are lots of substantive violations, and like i say, i think they could wind up using the new Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/york-state'>York State Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/rico-statute'>Rico Statute that requires that you show tHree criminal acts within a tenyear period and using the Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/trump-org'>Trump Organization as a criminal enterprise. So this is a pretty widespread investigation. The prosecutors now have all of trumps records. Theyve got all of his tax returns. Theyve got everything from his accountants. Theyre got the ability to subpoena more records and follow the money. And i think that this particular investigation is going to go well beyond taxes. Its going to go well beyond what were thinking that mr. Weisselberg can testify to. And i think it is something that were going to find out about as time goes on. A lot of the work has already been done. Even though the Grand Jury was appointed, impaneled a week or two ago, the fact of the matter is you couldnt impanel a Grand Jury in Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/manhattan-county'>Manhattan County until two weeks ago because of covid. Much of the work has been done by the a. G. Office, the new Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/york-attorney'>York Attorney generals office, where they have the ability to take statements from people and i know they have done that because i have been involved in one of the investigations that has come up here. So i think they have got a lot of testimony now. They have got a lot of documents. And the key is sorting tHrough it and determining what crimes, if any, can be charged. Interesting. The people of tulsa preparing the first of its kind commemorations for what some call the worst incident of racial violence in u. S. History. In 1921, a violent mob of white people attacked greenwood, one of the most affluent black communities at the time, often referred to as black wall street. Hundreds of buildings were burned to the ground. Some 300 black tulsans were killed. Tremaine lee is live in tulsa with more on this. Good to see you. Youve been there all week as they prepare to commemorate this anniversary. This event is getting renewed attention in recent years. Whats the feeling been like leading up to this anniversary . Thanks so much for having me. Ive been talking to folks who are descendants of survivors and people in this community feel a great sense of gratefulness for being able to cobble together community, but theres a sense of wait and trauma. 1921 undermined the wellbeing of this community. In an instant all that wealth was destroyed and families were unable to pass it down to the next. While theyre trying to move forward and commemorate the past, in so many ways theyre connected to the past. I talked to many people. Lets take a listen. You didnt read it in a book. You didnt see it in a movie. You witnessed it yourself in reality. History can make your heart bleed. Repair me. Repair me as a person, repair me as a citizen. Were talking about going on four generations of tragedy. Tragedy. Four generations of tragedy. This community is trying to find a way forward, but in so many ways this story was buried. It wasnt until recent years folks outside of tulsa understood what happened here. In a number of ways were still finding out. Theres still folks searching for the remains of that 1921 race massacre. Were 10100 years out this weekend, but theres still so much more to learn. They say 300 people were killed, but that number could be so much more. If people are thankful it took Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/tv-series'>Tv Series like watchmen in order for a number of americans to learn about this tragedy. I dont know if i would use the word thankful. Folks here feel like theres been salt rubbed in the wounds time and time again. Their voices have been silenced or muted because, again, even though it was here in tulsa and many outside the community didnt know about it, there were survivors and descendants raised in the flag for a long time and they were ignored. I think Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/theres-appreciation'>Theres Appreciation that the gaze has turned on this horrific, shameful chapter in history, but many say whats next .
