Senator Joe Manchin criticized those that opposed legislation to create a 9 11 style commission. They said there is no excuse for any republican to vote against this commission since democrats agreed to everything they asked for. Mitch mcconnell has made this his political position thinking it will help in his 2022 elections. They continue to live in fear. When asked if he would break the filibuster to get it passed. Jim clyburn says if they block the Commission House Speaker Nancy Pelosi should create a new committee to investigate. Where does the role of the filibuster come into play here . This commission is now a new lever, a new wedge the democrats can use to say their to their fellow senator, Joe Manchin of west virginia, you should be with us on this decision that so many want to do away with the filibuster rule. So that would let democrats pass democrats who come over from the house, with a simple majority, Vice President harris breaking the tie, whereas right now you need 60 vote in a 50 50 senate, thats ten votes. And youre right. Senator manchin has been very much arguing that republicans should be for this commission. And if it looks like today, pushback from the wee hours, as we just heard on your coverage, if as we think that republicans are going to block this commission, this is going to be a way for democrats to say to Joe Manchin, look, youre being had. Youre being schooled by republicans. They are not arguing in good faith. This is another reason that you should do away with that rule. He was asked about this yesterday and he said hes not there yet. He was still holding out hope for republican holdouts, but this is a great bit of intrigue. Everybody is trying to read Joe Manchins mind, like this is a new window into what hes thinking. Right. And it feels like every issue leads us back to the same question as before. The New York times reports that federal headlines in brooklyn are investigating whether several ukrainian officials were planning to interfere in the president ial election, part of that plan Rudy Giuliani Making Plans to tilt the election in favor of president trump. The times writes, the criminal investigation which began during the final months of the Trump Administration and has not been previously reported underscores the federal governments increasingly aggressive approach towards rooting out foreign interference in american electoral politics. The investigation is unfolding separately from a longrunning federal inquiry in manhattan that is aimed at mr. Giuliani. While the two investigations have a similar cast of characters and overlap in some ways, mr. Giuliani is not a subject of the brooklyn investigation. The brooklyn prosecutors along with the fbi are focused on current and former ukrainian officials suspected of trying to influence the election by spreading unsubstantiated claims of corruption about mr. Biden through a number of channels, including mr. Giuliani. It is unclear whether the brooklyn prosecutors will ultimately charge any of the ukrainians.
