First, it is clear that the situation in Israel And Gaza in the last several days since the night between thursday and friday is much more relaxed. There were no hostilities from both sides, both sides are engaged in fight over the narrative on who won. On one hand, israelis are telling the public and outside of israel, trying to send a message hamas was badly hit militarily in the conflict. On the other hand, hamas said he won because he fired rockets at Jerusalem And Tel aviv. But the main question is what will happen, not in the next few weeks, okay. Next few weeks, things stay calm. But root causes of conflict were not resolved by the ceasefire. All of the problems that led us here in the first place are still there. And i think within two, three months theres quite a good chance well find ourselves in the same situation. And about the second question about the arrests, i think what the israeli police is trying to do is twofold. First, when it comes to east jerusalem, temple mount, theres almost a mission now by the israeli police to show that what happened in gaza has no influence on the West Bank and on east jerusalem, many on the temple mount, meaning that hamas didnt win in jerusalem, even if there was a war in gaza, it has no link to east jerusalem. This is why theyre firm in the temple mount. Inside israel, i think were still in the aftermath of inter communal violence between arabs and jews, worst violence since october 2000, and in the last few days, several indictments were presented, and still i think that for every jew who was arrested, four or five arabs were arrested by the police. The trump administration, the previous administration, only met with palestinian officials once and that was early on in their term, then ultimately several years after that pursued aggressive policies in favor with the israeli government. What are we expecting from this administration as they embark now on the first high Level Set of talks between, in Person Set of talks between the secretary of State And Israeli and palestinian officials. A State Department official Briefing Us today said theyre trying to reestablish that palestinian connection. Thats definitely one of the purposes of the trip by the Secretary Of State. He is going to ramala, after meeting with Benjamin Netanyahu and also with the Defense Minister benny gantz, former opponent, now in the cabinet, with netanyahu, but potential future rival, meeting with other officials and then meeting with mahmoud abbas. The rival group, dominating group to hamas for corruption, for not scheduling elections, theyre not saying that now. They want to establish with the Palestinian Authority theres a route to provide humanitarian and Reconstruction Relief to gaza, circumvent hamas. Theyre trying to use the United Nations and Palestinian Authority to get money to donors around the world, despite doubts among those in the country that have seen this so many times, they dont Think Gaza can be rebuilt without channeling that money to weapons. That is the mission here, to try to equal it. As he said, the Secretary Of State said yesterday, to create equal measures of security for both groups. Talk to us about reporting you are hearing from sources about Americas Role here when you look at the conflict. Are you hearing from u. S. Officials in the region or israeli officials what role they want to be playing, what role they want america to play . Is anyone here thinking this is somehow meant to jump start some kind of new dynamic in negotiations and relations . Well, theres a short and long answer. Short answer is no. Unfortunately there are no Peace Talks on the horizon, i dont think this is the goal of either the biden administration, israelis or palestinians. The long answer is that there was a big change in the biden Administration Policy on israel and palestine. First four months of the administration were policy of benign neglect on the israeli palestinian conflict, putting it on low Priority And Thinking for some reason that you can just put it aside and it will be all right, nothing will happen. What we saw the last few weeks proved to everybody, especially to the White House, that this is not the case. In the last few weeks to White House credit, we see the biden administration coming back to the israeli palestinian issue, but it is really unclear what they can really do. Abbas and Palestinian Authority have zero influence in gaza. So to expect that the Palestinian Authority is going to be a relevant party when it comes to reconstruction of gaza, i doubt it. Second, there is donor fatigue. Most of the money to reconstruct gaza after the 2014 war came from the European Union and its members. Right now, many European Union are saying why should we pay again to reconstruct gaza to have another war in six months or a Year And Israel will bomb it again. Especially when theres no context in which we bring this money. Theres no two State Solution on the horizon, why should we pay. And the third thing is that the White House wants to see whether it can jump start its relationship with the Palestinian Authority. For example, consulate in jerusalem, one of the main goals for blinken. Do you get a sense that israeli officials are reevaluating decades long policy towards gaza, is there any debate within israeli politics to allow elections to take place where Theres Unity to weaken hamas, politically there have been arguments that pa can return to gaza and hold elections it would undermine hamas. Do you get an idea the israeli administration talks about that . Depends who inside the defense establishment, there are such people that say that, but we have to remember we dont have a government here for more than two years. We just went through our fourth consecutive election. Were going to fifth election in three months, most likely. So it is impossible for the Caretaker Government after Caretaker Government to take strategic decisions needed to try to maybe solve the situation in gaza. I am not very hopeful. While doing this, it passed right by the usual window at which a pilot flying this route would begin to slow down and descend. We need to hear from the pilots why they flew this way. Essentially looks like they were trying to get out of Belarus Air Space as quickly as possible. Theres still a lot of question about what was being said by Air Traffic Control to the pilot, what the Fighter Jet was doing, did it have a role convincing the pilot to suddenly turn towards minsk before leaving the belarusian air space. Theres still a lot we dont know and the story could get significantly more complicated if you will. End of the day, as interesting as that might be, we cant forget the fact that pratasevich is in Lukashenkos Custody and thats a dangerous situation for a journalist like him. All right. We know they had covidlike symptoms but thats very nonspecific and vague and we need to know ultimately what their diagnosis was. We dont have that information yet but we know at the beginning of the pandemic, chinese authorities werent granting access right after the outbreak, and even the w. H. O. Investigation was largely hindered by lack of information by chinese authorities, so we need more transparency to answer some of the questions. What do you make of senator pauls comments that he wont get vaccinated because he has natural immunity. Does having the disease or having had, if you had it early on in the year, does that give you the same kind f immunity the vaccine does . How long would immunity last and do we have hard data on that . What i will say is i am not surprised. I think his comments are really dangerous. We have data that about 40 of people that identify as republican dont want to get vaccinated. He could be considered a trusted messenger and is putting out inaccurate information. What we do know is that the immunity you get from natural infection is not as strong or robust as the immunity received from vaccines. Additionally, we know that the immunity induced by vaccines covers the variants and thats also a concern. People that had previous Covid Infection can potentially get reinfected with variants. It is incredibly dangerous that as a physician that he is giving out this information, which is pushing us more to want to get out accurate, responsible messaging about the vaccine. People need to understand natural immunity is not sufficient to prevent reinfection. Talk about children and under aged vaccinations. Anyone age 12 and up can get vaccinated. Dr. Anthony fauci said vaccines could be made available for children as young as two and up by The End of the year. Is there any risk from your assessment that we could see outbreaks in Elementary Schools this fall as many students will not be vaccinated by that point . Obviously children 12 and under. Right. Thats a great question, especially as new York City is saying theres not going to be a remote option, all kids should come back to full in person. I think what we know so far from much of the data is if schools are following Safety Prevention measures, masking, physical distancing, hand sanitizing, we know that schools are relatively safe places and are not key drivers for Covid Infection. So i do think that combined with the fact that we have large percentage of teachers already vaccinated, hopefully more being vaccinated over the summer as well as 12 to 15yearolds having access, eligible to be vaccinated, will make the fall relatively safe. George floyds murder sparked strong demands for change. One year later, experts say Police Reform is sweeping through the country at an impressive pace. To see things occurring on this level, on a national level, and also taking place not only at the local and State Level is amazing and about time. Theyre weeks away from beginning what they call a revolutionary retraining. Training will emphasize consumer service. Doesnt necessarily have to be a bad experience with police officers. Might be a bad situation theyre in, but our encounter does not have to be a negative encounter. This emphasis on service shaped in months after floyds death, as congress debates federal legislation, lawmakers in nearly every state introduced more than 3,000 policing related bills. More than 30 passed new Police Oversight and Reform Laws since may 2020. Common reforms include bans on Choke Holds and restraints, and new expanded Body Camera policies. The house passed the bill back in march, it is now up to the senate. What key pieces of reform will be a priority for democrats to have in the final bill . Well, i think everything thats in the George Floyd justice in Policing Act that came out of the house is priority for democrats. Even though theyre going to miss the deadline that the President Set of May 25th this year, i take it as a good sign the conversations are still going. Congress, ayman, you know this, congress only operates really well when they have a deadline. Having May 25th as a Focus Factor was good. Again, the fact that theyre still talking is good. The one thing was qualified immunity. Great to see in that package what theyre doing in colorado. The Sticking Point is that senator tim scott, republican of south carolina, deputized by the Minority Leader to negotiate with Karen Bass from the House And Senator cory booker, he doesnt want to do away with qualified immunity. He floated an alternative, thats to end qualified immunity for Police Departments, making it possible for individuals to sue Police Departments, but one of the problems that folks have with that is sure, you sue the Police Department but the money ends upcoming from taxpayers. I have a broader question, and based on folks you talk to, conversations in reporting that you do, it is obvious in order for legislation to pass in the senate, democrats are going to need support of ten republicans. It will make it unlikely theyll get everything they want. Do you get a sense from reporting that it is better to pass some reform now rather than take the all or Nothing Approach . What have you been hearing about what theyre considering in negotiations youre talking about between Representative Bass and others. Let me tell you something, ayman. We are talking about tight lips. It is difficult to get real time information. Hard to imagine in washington, d. C. About whats happening. I am having an interview with Congresswoman Bass for the Washington Post live tomorrow. I am hoping she will say something more. I do think that there could be room, you heard House Minority Whip or majority whip Jim Clyburn say last week that he is fine with not having qualified immunity be in the final package if that means getting it passed. When i interviewed the Minnesota State Attorney general keith ellison, i asked him about qualified immunity. He is former member of congress representing minnesota. He even said dont make perfect the enemy of the good, if what you need to do to get George Floyd justice in Policing Act passed to take out qualified immunity, come back to it later, he is fine with that. I think there might be momentum there. Lets get something on the books, get something passed, especially because there are a lot of other huge priorities coming down the pike that already will have a hard time getting passed. And one last thing, ayman, im sorry, the fact that Senator Scott was deputized by Mitch Mcconnell i think says if a deal is reached, that chances of getting ten votes among republicans to overcome a filibuster and get to final vte on the floor is a good sign.
