Events of The day. After careful consideration, i have made The decision to oppose The house democrats slanted and unbalanced proposal for anoTher commission to study The events of The-6th'>January The 6th, joining me now, Congresswoman Madeleine Dean from pennsylvania, an impeachment manager in trumps second impeachment and bonnie watson coleman. Thank you for coming to The sunday show. I want to play this sound from Senator Ron Johnson on what he had to say about what happened on January 6th and get your reaction on The oTher side. The fact of The matter is, even calling it an insurrection, it wasnt. I condemn The breach. I condemn The violence. But to say There were thousands of Armed Insurrectionists Breaching The capitol, intent on overthrowing The government is simply false narrative. By and large it was peaceful protests, except for There were a number of people basically agitators that whipped The crowd, and breached The capitol. And, you know, thats really The truth of whats happening here. Congresswoman dean, you go first. Your reaction to The senator. Its just stunning. First of all, good to be with you, jonathan, and great to be with you, bonnie. Happy sunday to you. Its just stunning. These backflips, The gymnastics that some republicans so tightly teThered to former President Trump are performing just show Their absence of credibility. Of course this was no tuesday tour. This was no peaceful protest. I was in The capitol that day. I had to be taken out, along with oThers, in a Gas Mask, as The Chamber Doors were pounded on and pierced. This think of The attack on The police. Of course, The video shows The truth that this was The greatest attack by Americans On America on The seat of our democracy. So why These folks are doing this, i think it is a perverse teThering to The former president and a belief that maybe somehow, if we try to forget about all of this, Theyll-stay'>Theyll Stay in power. Congresswoman dean, Theres a very actually startling photo of you in that Gas Mask up The-house'>In The House gallery. Congresswoman coleman, you were There that day. Your reaction to senator johnson. I tell you, i went to The capitol thinking it was The safest place to be because i was evacuated from both my apartment and my Office Building because it was so close to The rnc. So i was really confused when i was walking down The corridor and i encountered one of The Police Officers who said, you dont want to go down There because Theyre coming in. Theyre coming in. Im like, i know that Theres demonstrations. I know that. I saw that outside. What do you mean Theyre coming in. Im just trying to go down here to The office down The corner here. And as i was turning The corner to go down anoTher corridor, i could see colorful images and what appeared to be tustling between blue uniforms and people in very colorful and very loud. So i went into one of The attending physicians offices and we locked in. We could hear Them chanting, usa, usa, usa and we could hear The tustling, but we didnt know The extent of it. Congresswoman coleman, after you had to hunker down with oTher members of congress, you came down with The coronavirus, with covid19. How are you right now . I am recovered. Thank you for asking me. I had already had one of my The first shot of my vaccine. I immediately was informed to get The monoclonal antibodies infusion, and so i waited out everything and Then got my second shot. I am fine, thank god. That is good to hear. Congresswoman dean, you talked earlier about The fact that republicans are teThered to Donald Trump. My question to you is, do you believe that They truly believe that what happened on January 6th was just a normal Tourist Day . Do They believe The lies They are telling . I dont think They do. You just take a look and you showed some of Mitch Mcconnells words on The floor following The Impeachment Verdict where he voted not guilty and Then said The president is morally and practically responsible for The insurrection. Mr. Mccarthy had a moment of clarity. I think youve seen those words over and over again on The House Floor Pullcalling for The presi to stop The riot, to stop The insurrection. They dont believe it. They believe it is Their pathway to staying in power or gaining greater power. But look at The video that you are showing. The capitol police, a protective force, saved countless lives that day. Why wouldnt every single Member Of Congress say we have to find out The facts and circumstances surrounding what happened, if for no greater reason than we prevent it from happening in The future. They are afraid of something. Mr. Mccarthy and mr. Mcconnell are afraid of The truth. Congresswoman coleman, if The senate doesnt pass The commission, doesnt approve The commission, do you think that Speaker Pelosi should set up a House Select Committee to keep going and investigating what happened January 6th. Jonathan, if The senate first of all, i dont believe The senate is going to fail to pass this. I dont think that These senators can go back home and face Their constituents and say, we dont care about our safety. We dont care about our protecting The citadel of our democracy, and we dont care about protecting you all who might want to come visit. So im going to be hopeful and im not going to speak to The universe that The senate will not find a way to pass this. I think its incumbent upon The Majority Leader in The senate to figure that pathway out and to do it. It is unconscionable that The republicans will not confront The truth here. It was before everyones eyes to see and everyones part to react to. We have been affronted. We have been we have experienced a moral injury. But more than that, we experienced an attack on our democracy and we know how fragile it is now. So lets stop politicizing this. Lets do what They did with The 9 11 commission. Let The facts, let The evidence speak for itself. Let it uncover why this happened, how this happened and what happened again with The gaps in Sharing Information that had it been shared and acted upon, we might not have had that outcome. Weve got to do everything we can to ensure that that never happens again. Right. And last question to you, Congresswoman Dean, and that is this. Lets say that The optimism expressed by Congresswoman Coleman does not come through and a January 6th commission is not approved, do you think a House Select Committee should be formed, and what could a select committee do that a Commission Cant . Well, i share Bonnie Representative Watson colemans optimism that surely The senate will find a path to yes. We want to find The truth. I know The republicans are grappling with discovering The truth, but, of course, we do have The option of The speaker forming a commission. And what They have to do is discover The facts with credibility and integrity, which i know any commission we put togeTher will do. Well take The facts where They lead us. Were not afraid of those facts. But i, too, like Representative Watson coleman, i want to believe that The House And Senate will come togeTher to form an independent commission. This was The greatest attack on our democracy in anyones memory. Its egregious, and why wouldnt we want to know all The facts . Jonathan, can i just say one thing . Absolutely. Just one thing. By creating a select committee, we still give Them an opportunity to use The politics and The narrative of misinformation. The reason that this commission is so important, it takes away The politics of The discussion and puts it in The hands of nonpolitical people, nonelected people, experts in security, intelligence, civil rights, civil liberties. And The same Level And Degree and respect that we tweettwe The treated The 9 11 assault. And They would be able to approve subpoenas togeTher. Well have to leave it There. Congresswoman Madeleine Dean and Congresswoman Bonnie Watson coleman, thank you both for coming to The sunday show. Coming up, if These are tourists, Then im straight. We get into who These people really are, next. Good morning, mr. Sun. Good morning, blair. [ chuckles ] whoo. Im gonna grow big and strong. Yes, you are. Im gonna get this place all clean. MoTher is unable to exit The vehicle. Injuries are unknown. Thank you, onstar. My son, is he okay . Your sons fine. Thank you. There was something in The road. Its okay. Youre safe now. Its ridiculous. Hes not a domestic terrorist. Hes not a terrorist at all. Hes just a young man who went into The building and thinking that thinking that President Trump had his back. He thought he had The president s yes, he did. Authority, permission . That is correct. He felt he had permission from The president to go There, which he did. He was invited. He was invited. Martha chansley, moTher of Qanon Shaman Jacob chansley telling Itvs Robert moore her sons actions on January 6th was an invitation from trump. Its an increasingly common legal tactic for The 440plus people facing federal charges in connection with storming The capitol. Joining me now, robert moore, Washington Correspondent for The british network itv news. Robert was The only reporter embedded with The mob as it stormed congress on January 6th. And his latest documentary after The Storm Americas Enemy within digs deep into The motives and grievances of The insurrectionists. Robert, thank you for coming to The sunday show. Jonathan, a pleasure to be on your show. Well, what you did on January 6th was gripping and excellent reporting. What youve done in this documentary is The same. After going through The capitol with These folks, you went back and found some of those folks, including jacob Ther'>Chansleys MoTher and talked about what motivated Them. Why did you decide to do that . Well, because in The immediate aftermath of The-6th'>January The 6th and those disturbing and dark scenes, i had an urgent need, a hunger to understand The exact motives and grievances of The seditionists and insurrectionists i was with. So i went back to see Them. Those who i crossed The threshold of congress with to try and ask Them why did They do it and, above all, what was in Their background to try and explain Their motivation, Their mobilization that day. And it very rapidly appeared to me, jonathan, There were two groups in There on The-6th'>January The 6th. Clearly The ultra dangerous, those who were trying to execute a coup against The united states. But There was anoTher group, namely, The delusional. Those who have totally embraced These wild online, very toxic Theories'>Conspiracy Theories. And its that combination of The dangerous and delusional that represents a unique threat to america even now. Speaking of delusional. Lets have a listen to felipe marquez. You all, youre not going to believe what youre about to hear. Something in The back of my head was saying, this is like my rosa Parks Type of moment. This might be breaking The law, but as long as i show my face, as long as i show that i am, you know, not wanting to be violent or not engaging in violence with police, Then ill be fine. Let me put it bluntly, felipe. Some people are going to be outraged that you compare yourself torosa parks. I think its an appropriate comparison. Robert, i mean, you right There on screen, i go on. Wow. You and i, jonathan, have both reported on These fundamental Fault Lines in america. But what an absurd, what a sort of grotesque comparison to make. What it does do is illustrate The depth of The Rabbit Holes of These conspiracy Theorists. I mean, They are not just delusional. They have been caught up very sincerely in this web of lies that are online. And that is kind of The sort of The clear threat, it seems to me. There are These online platforms that are continuing to spread such wild and absurd narratives. And looking forward, that is going to be The danger. How do we extract people out of this sort of cultlike belief structure. And thats going to be The difficulty in The criminal cases coming forward for all The seditionists being tried. How do They separate The dangerous from The delusional . And are These people, are They victims Themselves of sort of online hatred . So These are difficult legal, political implications with big implications for america, too. A couple who was There on January 6th who you talked to, ramona and daryl. They were There on January 6th. Everyone, have a listen to what They told robert in this clip. Just listen to Daryl And Ramona again in florida. Watching all of The videos that have come out, it was very apparent that much of it was staged. There were actors, okay . There were people who were simulators, okay . It was very staged and planned. I believe that it was all Put On. And ive got to believe it was by The liberals. Robert, They were There and yet They are contending that actors, it was staged. Its Put On by The liberals . Exactly. I mean, this is The kind of inner story, if you like, jonathan. Sure, The-6th'>January The 6th was borne out of a conspiracy Theory, namely, that The president ial election of november had been stolen, but it also spawned an entirely new conspiracy Theory. Namely, that that was a false Flag Operation on The-6th'>January The 6th. It was done by The left to incriminate and toxify The far right in america. And thats held by millions of people across this country. Polling suggests that maybe half of all republicans believe The January 6th was a false Flag Operation. So it tells me that The-6th'>January The 6th isnt The-end'>The End of The story, isnt The-end'>The End of The threat. It may be just The beginning as These Theories'>Conspiracy Theories continue to spread online in a really toxic and dangerous way. Everyone, The name of The documentary is after The Storm Americas Enemy within. The reporter youre seeing him There, robert moore, british televisions itv. Thank you very much for your work. [lazer beam and sizzling sounds] were here for The heavy flowers and The wedgiepickers [lazer beam and sizzling sounds] with a pad made like no oTher up to zero leaks because it locks blood in up to zero bunching because it flexes no worries just always flexfoam The republican party keeps clinging to Donald Trump even as The cfo of The Trump Organization now faces a criminal probe into his taxes and trumps company is now under investigation in a, quote, criminal capacity by The new York Attorney general and The manhattan da. And though our screens have been mercifully trumpfree The last few months, he told right wing Media Outlet Oan that his maga rallies will soon resume. Joining me now, stuart stevens, author of it was all a lie how The republican party became Donald Trump. And tim obrien, senior columnist for bloomberg opinion and The author of Trump Nation The art of being The donald. Tim, stuart, thank you for coming back to The sunday show. I want to put up this poll, stuart, and have you explain it to me and The american people. And that is this. Its a cnn poll. 70 of republicans dont think President Biden was legitimately elected. Legitimately won enough votes to be president. Stuart, how is that possible . Its possible because The leaders of The party said it was and They allowed those senators who knew immediately and representatives that trump had lost, went along with this idea that, well, whats The problem . Well just humor it. And when They ended up running for Their lives on January 6th, They might have gotten an inkling it was problematic. The degree that this is profound and toxic for our nation, i think, its difficult for any of us to grasp. The greatest gift that america has given The world is peaceful transition. We are The oldest functioning democracy. This is a challenge to The essence of democracy itself. You dont if you dont believe your president was legally elected you live in an occupied country. You dont live in a democracy. So think about this. 70 of republicans think this. This is what Theyll teach Their kids. This is not a literal problem that will go away. I think its The greatest Challenge Weve had internally since The civil war. And, tim, and yet, given what stuart just said, listen to what Senate Minority leader Mitch Mcconnell had to say about Chuck Schumer about all of this. Chuck schumer never would have accepted The results of that election. They would have been out on The streets. They would have been marching and Mitch Mcconnell says, well, zee to get down to business now. Okay. Obviously, thats not Mitch Mcconnell. That is Donald Trump. Thats my bad. But all this Belly Aching from trump about no one has been treated as badly as me and Mitch Mcconnell just react. I cant. Well, it is Belly Aching, but it works, and i cant reiterate enough, and emphasize what stuart just said. Were in The most dangerous time in our history since The civil war. This, of course, on The surface of all of this, this is about The danger of Misinformation And Propaganda and lies being disseminated across Social Media and across gop messaging apparatus. But it is also out There because Donald Trump has taught his party that this works. Josh hawley and Ted Cruz and Mitch Mcconnell and Lindsey Graham and Marjorie Taylor Greene would not be diving into this Muck Day in and day out if They didnt see that There was a logical end to it for Them. And The-end'>The End to it is The raw acquisition of power, devoid of policy and devoid of purpose. Front and center for Them now are The midterms. And The most active voters in each party come out in midterms. And The most passionate, engaged voters in The gop are trumpistas. And so The entire party is catering to those folks. And its this mix of people who believe that institutions are out to get Them and that expertise should be doubted. And oThers who are just craven enough to enchant those folks in order to get things like Tax Cuts and a conservative court. But They are not building a better country. And They are dividing us. And its a very dangerous time were in right now. Stuart, is it too late . Is The republican party too far gone to turn this around . Is The nation too far gone . Are we just sliding down, and its just a matter of time before we hit Rock Bottom . Well, i think The republican party is gone, as we know it. Theres no saving this republican party. Look. If you Run For Your Life in your own office and its not enough to get you to convict a person who instigated that, if thats not a tripwire, dont expect anything else to be. We have to fight this. Look at what The republican party is consumed with now. Its crazy conspiracy. Theres no truth. Theres no leadership. You cant negotiate with that. You Cant Compromise with it. You just have to beat Them. And if They lose enough elections for enough time, perhaps Theyll change. But look, in The lincoln project, thats what were about. Were about not trying to fix The republican party. Were trying to save The country. And The danger here is we dont realize how dangerous it is because its sort of a patina of normalcy out There and we all desperately want normal. And we have a normal president who has a functioning government. But this is not a normal time at all. And we have to rise to that challenge. And we have to wake up and face it. We cant look away. Tim, as i said in your intro, you are The author of Trump Nation, The art of being The donald. I want you to have a listen to what Michael Cohen said to Joy Reid on The reidout earlier this week and get your reaction on The oTher side. I think They already know this. I think that Donald Trump is going to flip on all of Them. What do you think about that, including his children. I really believe that Donald Trump cares for only himself, and he realizes that his goose is cooked. Now weve always known that Donald Trump only cares about himself, but does he really realize his goose is cooked . And more importantly, do you think he actually would flip on his own children . I think Donald Trump would flip on anyone, if it was in his own selfinterest and about selfpreservation. You can understand everything Donald Trump does through two lenses. Selfaggrandizement or selfpreservation. Its very rare that Theres anoTher thing that explains what he does, and hell have no loyalty to anyone around him, including his children. Maybe with The exception of ivanka. And, by The way, everyone around him knows that. They know loyalty flows in One Direction in his world. So when push comes to shove around These criminal investigations, i dont think anyone is going to put Their own liberty at stake to protect him. And i think thats why The events of The last week are significant. Not only that The new York State Attorney Generals case expanded from a civil case to a criminal case, but that Allen Weisselberg himself is The subject of a criminal investigation. Allen weisselberg grew up in The Trump Organization. He knows where all The financial bodies are buried. Its not a complex business. This is not an enron investigation. This is a Mom And Pop shop with very few layers in between Allen Weisselberg and Donald Trump. And Donald Trump is highly aware of that. Hes deeply worried. Hes he turns 75 next month and spent decades eluding The law, thumbing his nose at The law, and its catching up to him. WheTher it ends in jailtime is anoTher thing. Tim obrien, stuart stevens, thank you both very much for coming back to The sunday show. Coming up if republicans have Their way, 2020 will never end. Thats next. Who do you think won arizona on November 3rd . Trump Trump Trump trump you know, thats how we feel in georgia, too. Representatives Marjorie Taylor Greene and Matt Gaetz continued Their big Lie Tour in arizonas maricopa county. The site of The baseless gopsponsored Ballot Recount which will resume despite pushback from Republican County leaders who called it quote, a grift disguised as an audit. OTher states are following suit. On friday, a Georgia Judge greenlit a Mailin Ballot Inspection in Fulton County despite three audits last year. All of this is happening, despite no solid Evidence Whatsoever of voter fraud. Here to discuss, andrea young, executive director of The aclu of georgia. Ms. Young, welcome back to The sunday show. Thank you for being here. Thank you so much for talking about These very important, critical issues. Let me play Brad Raffensberger, The Georgia Secretary of state, what he had to say on december 7th. We have now counted, legally cast ballots three times. And The results remain unchanged. And now, he in response to everything, he put out The statement. It reads, Fulton County has a longstanding history of Election Mismanagement that has understandably weakened Voters Faith in its system. Allowing this audit provides anoTher layer of Transparency And Citizen engagement. Andrea, what is going on here . You know, raffensberger has walked back what was actually an admirable performance during The president ial election. He is a technocrat, an engineer. He is a republican who supported trump and has said so, of course. But in georgia, we typically dont see even The attempt to change The results after people have cast Their ballots. We see a lot of Voter Suppression on The front end, who has access to The ballot, who has access to The polls. But this is a new one for me to see this persistent effort to invalidate lawfully cast ballots, ballots that were in Fulton County so transparent that one of our local Television Stations recorded The entire count. So when They go back and, you know, to over and over review These completely unfounded, bizarre Theories'>Conspiracy Theories, They have videotape of The entire account. It was held in The State Farm Arena in full view, you know, of bipartisan observers and, like i said, our local They may have had a Panda Cam so you can watch The count. Its deeply disturbing and They have municipal elections coming up. So this is harassment of our democratic process in our state. So andrea, on The front page of The Atlanta Journalconstitution Today it has this headline. Jim Crow Reference magnifies debate. How is it magnifying The debate There in georgia . Yes, well, you know, weve seen this movie before. Georgia, after The civil war, atlanta in particular, was, you know, prospered under reconstruction. Africanamerican institutions, banks, universities thrived. Black voters were 40 of The electorate in The state of georgia after reconstruction. And Then, you know, you came in with all of These measures that, on Their face, seem to be race neutral but in fact, are designed to repress and suppress The ability of africanamericans to cast votes. So Fulton County is The largest number of black voters in The state of georgia. So it is no accident that it is Fulton County thats under attack. In fact, when They found discrepancies during The recount, They found Them in republicancontrolled majority overwhelmingly white counties. They did not find Them in Fulton County. So this San Attack on The ability of black voters to elect The representatives that stand for multicultural democracy. Let me lets go back to Brad Raffensberger here for a second. You said at The beginning of our conversation that hes been walking back, you know, courageous statements and courageous actions he took during The election. Does that have Anything Or Everything to do with his own electoral prospects and trying to keep Donald Trump from nipping at his behind as he stands for reelection . Well, i think it has everything to do with it. Our Lieutenant Governor, who also was rejected, you know, The notion that There was something wrong with The November Election has declined to run for reelection. So Lieutenant Governor duncan is not running. Raffensberger, he showed courage. He told The president to his face, mr. President , These are The results. These are accurate. And, you know, and yet now we see him supporting measures that would make so even The way The governor, as you showed on your show, even The way The governor voted in november would no longer be acceptable under The laws that They passed, sb202. Andrea young, executive director of The aclu of georgia, today, of all days, i really appreciate your coming on The show. Thank you very much for coming back to The sunday show. Thank you. It was brokered late thursday after 11 days of conflict that claimed The lives of 13 israelis and more than 200 palestinians. This was The first real international test for The biden administration and The president s Fourdecade Friendship with israeli Prime Minister benjamin netanyahu. Joining me now is jon finer, The deputy national Security Adviser to President Biden. Thank you very much, mr. Finer, for coming to The sunday show. Thanks for having me, jonathan. So my colleague at The Washington Post, david ignatius, has an incredible tiktok of what happened over The last 11 days and The president s The-scenes'>Behind The Scenes but frantic efforts to get to this ceasefire. I want to put something up here that he writes about how he got in touch with people. Quote, in a notable display of independence, biden waited almost a month after taking office before placing his first call to netanyahu. When The crisis began, Biden Hadnt talked with sisi, The president Of Egypt, or mahmoud abbas, The president of The Palestinian Authority. Mr. Finer, why is it that it wasnt until this crisis that The president reached out to any of those leaders with The exception of netanyahu, i know. Well, jonathan, id say one of The huge advantages, quite frankly, that President Biden brings to this job, compared with many of his recent predecessors is longstanding relationships with These world leaders. He is known prime Minister Netanyahu literally for decades. He had met certainly president Al Sisi Of Egypt in The context of serving as Vice President. And he has known and worked with president abbas of The Palestinian Authority for many, many years if not decades as well. And so while in The early days of a new administration, you know, new president s are often forced to make almost introductory calls, introducing Themselves around The world, President Biden could bring These relationships to bear to address problems that arise in The world. When this crisis erupted, those relationships proved quite consequential. Mr. Finer, how much of The previous administrations previous administrations interactions in The Middle East informed The current president , President Bidens actions in The Middle East now . From all The reporting of what we know, Donald Trumps relationship with netanyahu, Donald Trumps relationship with mr. Sisi in egypt were relationships that sort of Thers'>Ruffled FeaThers in The united states. Also, it was something that informed President Bidens interactions when this new flair up happened . When i say its in The context of this crisis, i think our administration certainly President Biden and our team many of whom served previously in government and worked on The crises before tried to draw lessons not just from The last four years or from The Obama Administration but going back even furTher about how These crises proceed and what is The best approach to try to bring Them to an end as soon as possible. President biden set The Tone And Strategy from The beginning by setting The objective of ending The hostilities as quickly as They could be ended. We decided The best approach to doing that, looking at historical precedent was quiet, The-scenes'>Behind The Scenes, but frequent, highlevel, hourbyhour almost diplomacy with key figures on The israeli side and The Palestinian Authority and The government Of Egypt not to mach ourselves The center of The story but focus, frankly, on bringing about a ceasefire as quickly as we could. We think according to The his Call Precedent every one of These conflicts is a tragedy, it produces a loss of life on both side. It ended more quickly than it oTherwise might have. Let me get you to react to this. Ill get your response on The oTher side. Do you think The ceasefire will hold . Who knows. Maybe a month. Maybe two. Maybe half a year. Maybe a year. The situations with The Middle East in how confident is he . How confident is The administration that this ceasefire will indeed hold . Well, its something well watch closely. Its not The situation where once you achieve a ceasefire, you can turn The oTher Direction And Move on to oTher problems. Were going to have to someday typely engaged and have stayed deeply engaged on making sure that hostilities dont resume. And addressing some of The underlying circumstances that helped bring this about. We have strongly supported, for example, throughout The crisis israels right to defend itself and The president has been clear he will increase support, particularly for The iron dome system, which is an antimissile system that The united states helped develop in conjunction with The israelis. Well be adding our support for The system, which saved countless lives. The president said well be focussed on reconstruction and humanitarian Assistant Efforts for gaza working closely with The palestinian tort, u. N. , and oTher international stakeholders. Theres been tremendous destruction in gaza. It happens every time once of The hostility erupts. Well be focussed on that, as well. John finer, thank you very much for coming to The sunday show. We need to be able to stop The things going on because when i see that, its a fresh scab. You know, pigging and picking at mu soul. I can never heal The wound because i constantly see The same thing that is happening over and over again because i think my broTher. Welcome back to The sunday show. Im Jonathan Capehart. Were two days away from The anniversary of The murder of George Floyd. I had death sparked a national reckoning. It passes The George Floyd justice and Policing Act. It deadline that will be missed as negotiations continue in The senate. Still Floyds Family will join President Biden at The White House to commemorate The Anniversary And Call for reforms in what is sure to be an emotional meeting in The wake of The release of this past week of two more videos of black men killed by law enforcement. Joining me now is civil Rights Attorney ben crump. Thank you so much for coming back to The sunday show. Honored to be with you, jonathan. Were a few days out from The-one'>The One Year Anniversary of The murder of George Floyd. What are your thoughts on this day . You know, its a lot of emotion that reflect on how George Floyd was taken from this earth and just as important The aftermath that horrific, torturous death of George Floyd and how it has finally had America Start to have a conversation on racial reckoning. One Theyve long tried to ignore, jonathan. Start to have a conversation on racial reckoning. There was a lot of flurry of activity in The days, weeks, months after The murder of George Floyd. How concerned are you that momentum is actually wayne anding . Well, you know, jonathan, tragically with all pray George Floyd was The Tipping Point it would lead to no precedent where we would see a reduction in These unjustified, unnecessary killings of black people in america. However, we have been reminded repeatedly that we still have a long way to go. So The real hope well get The George Floyd justice and Policing Act passed so well have more accountability when The officers engage in excessive use of force and kill marginalized people of color in america. Speaking of The George Floyd justice and Policing Act, George Floyds family and you will be going to The White House On Tuesday to meet with President Biden. Is one of The goals in that meeting to push The president to push congress particularly The senate to get a deal done and The George Floyd justice and Policing Act passed . Well, i know President Biden has talked with George Floyds family several times since The tragedy happened and i think he would want us to concentrate on trying to on The-one'>The One Year Anniversary. Obviously we pray that he uses his influence to be able to pressure The senate to do something meaningful. And The oTher families like Brianna Taylor and oThers because Their blood is on this legislation. What has it meant to The Floyd Family to have been in such close contact with The president of The united states . You know, try to make sure you understand The historical nature of The. Calling you. You know, when The president called my Cell Phone after The verdict when dauchb was found guilty, you know, we were very emotional at The time. Then it took my moTher saying, you know, The president how did he reach you . It put it in perspective this is The leader of The free world using his influence to say that this black life matters. That black lives matter. So it is my belief that The George Floyd family, They understand how incredibly important this is that The president of The united states is having dialogue with Them because hes saying this is not just a black issue. This is an american issue. You know you mentioned The trial of derek chauvin, he found guilty On Friday. It was announced that Attorney General Keith Ellisson will be leading The prosecution of i think its kimberly porter, The woman who shot and killed daunte wright. I believe Wrights Family is The client of yours. Given The success of The late trial, how confident are you that youll achieve The same level of justice for wright in that trial . Well, obviously Attorney General ellison The first africanamerican Attorney General in minnesotas history, who has a Track Record for being a champion in civil rights is somebody who comes to The task of being very focussed on getting equal justice. So when we say with Ribty And Liberty and justice for all. Were talking about all of us. Were talking about These black people who have been unjustly killed. When you think about those people who did not get justice, you pray that in Their states, They will have somebody like a keith ellison. Somebody who is zealous about making sure that The constitution is real for all americans. Not just some americans. And we have seen over time that prosecutors They are prosecuting Police Officers for killing black people. They dont always do it zealously. Theyre somewhat lukewarm. As if They dont want a conviction. Thats not keith ellison. Attorney ben crump. Thank you very so much for coming to The sunday show. The name of The former officer is kimberly potter. Thank you very much. Thank you. Lets turn now to mel vis carter, The mayor of Saint Paul, minnesota, and andrea jenkins, president of The Minneapolis City council. Thank you both very much for coming back to The sunday show. Andrea, you are also The Vice President of Minneapolis City council where George Floyd was killed. It was in your district. Talk about what changed in The past year. Good morning, you know, i think we have worked on creating trying to create some significant changes. We have banned noknock warrants. However that still is occurring. We have banned Choke Holds in this community. Thats still occurring. Were working on get to The systemic roots of our issues by changing our Minneapolis Charter and creating a department of public safety. We want to be be able to have we have dedicated resources to communitybased solutions to help. We initiated a mental Health Response to challenges in our communities. You know, were trying to change The policies but, you know, in my mind, jonathan, we need to be working on changing The attitudes and The bring out The systemic racism that im not sure policies actually get at. If i remember correctly, The whole mantra of defund The police came out of minneapolis. There are a lot of calls saying, you know, take money completely away from The Minneapolis Police department and reinstitute it. Some of The things you talked about, im thinking specifically about The Mental Health things you talked about and The office of public safety, is that The response to The Defund Policeman that . Taking nonpolice related functions away from The police and giving Them Their own discreet areas . Certainly thats a part of it. And, you know, those things take resources. We reallocated Eight Million to begin The processes and that work continued. To be frank, jonathan, that work started prior to this. We have been moving resources away from The Police Department and really trying to set up infrastructures before George Floyd was murdered unjustly. We will continue to do that. Mayor carter, how has The last year been for you in Saint Paul in The years since The murder of George Floyd . Good morning, jonathan. Thank you for having me on. It has been traumatic for us. Its been hard. Its been just a one crisis after The next for us over The past year or so with The combination of all The events that happened after george Floyds Murder and The ongoing covid crisis. Were fortune here in Saint Paul what were doing in response is continuing a body of work that started well before George Floyd was murdered. We changed our use of force policies in my first is 00 days in our administration and this week we closed a Fortyeight Member Commission that is exploring alternative responses to The police calls that are nonviolent that are noncriminal, that are nonemergency to ensure we have The social workers and housing providers and things like that that can help us ditch some of The challenges and get out of cycles of crisis. Weve been able to go all in to double down on a body of work that, frankly, started before that. Anyone who was surprised by The murder of George Floyd has probably not been listening and pay much attention to The events that happened not just over The last ten years or so but caught on Cell Phone video but over The last hundred years my grandfaTher and his grandfaTher. Given that history, do you think The George Floyd justice and Policing Act will actually do something to break that historical cycle that youre talking about . It has to. The opportunity to ensure that our officers are better connected to our communities, The opportunity to ensure our public and our officers know people will be held accountable that fall below our public standard and expectations. This is The Work Weve been doing in Saint Paul. We have to do it on a national level. We have no oTher option and ill tell you, thats actually a good service to our officers, as well. The officers serve with dignity, They abhor The videos that come out over and over again. They know people think when They see Their badge and uniform, when people think They can treat Them like that without impunity, if They want to, it messes up our relationships on a local level here in Saint Paul and around The country. This is something that not justed a have cats and not just africanamerican community need, this is something that is critical to The underlying Rule Of Law for our country. Council member jenkins, youll get The last word here. Your reaction to what The mayor said and, also, what you think about The impact of George Floyd justice and Policing Act will have on your community of minneapolis . Well, is i agree with The mayor. As he noted, The work began long before George Floyd. The problems have been here long before George Floyd was murdered. I believe The national approach that George Floyd justice and Policing Act would can help in many yays, particularly with qualified immunity, which is one of The biggest challenges that, you know, allows officers to commit These heinous acts with impunity and so any movement we can get around that we need. You know, with arbitration and unions and i think The George Floyd Policing act can help with some of those things. We have to have a national approach to this very national problem. This is not a minneapolis or Saint Paul problem. This is a problem that is happening all over america. I was horrified by The event, The videos of new orleans. We can go down The list and every state in this country. Yeah. The list. The list, sadly, is endless. Minneapolis City Council Vice President andrea jenkins. I never sacrifice Thats House Majority whip Jim Clyburn who left black live activists matters reeling when he would be willing to comprise to get The George Floyd justice and Policing Act passed. On thursday, all ten published a letter to congressional leadership demanding qualified immunity be included. Joining me now is Congresswoman Maxine waters. Chair of The house financial services committee. Congresswoman waters, welcome back to The sunday show. Thank you delighted. You heard whip clyburn. Let me have you have a listen to minnesota state Attorney General who i interviewed On Friday and asked him about qualified immunity. Listen to what he had to say. So, look, i want cory Booker And Karen bass to fight like hell. I want Tim Scott to go back to his colleagues and say we have to pass this even if qualified immunity is in it but dont let The bill die over an item can we come back for later. I dont think The absence of qualified immunity is that. I think that if we can get everything except that, i say pass it. Dont quit and keep going. Is he right . Hes right about it being tough and our negotiators are fighting as hard as They can and should continue to fight but im not giving up on qualified immunity. I do not want to send any message to anybody that im willing to support legislation that does not have it in it. I think weve got to be tough. Weve got to be consistent. Understand that weve got to hold Police Officers accountable. Even since The death of George Floyd. We continued to have killings of black unarmed men, in particular. And so These Police Officers know They have The support of The police unions. They have The support of City Council members who intimidated by The police union. Police chiefs who said if They dont go along, They cant be chief. Even some mayors. Im so proud of though mayors that are willing to Stand Up And Fight and for The Police Chiefs that are willing to Stand Up And Fight. But history tells us that They have been intimidated too long, given in too much, and The police dont believe Theyre going to be held accountable. Thats why even after George Floyd They continue to kill and so i want qualified immunity out. One of The comprises is keeping qualified immunity are taking it away from Police Departments. Would it be a worthwhile comprise for you to make it possible for private citizens to sue Police Departments over bad cops . Well, you know, The devil is until The details. Thats why not wise to try to negotiate, you know, in public. But let me just say this, The Police Departments would be spending The Taxpayers Money to defend The police. When you have a family that does not have The resources of a city Police Department, Then you are giving Them an opportunity to get treated fairly. When you have millions of dollars from your Taxpayers Money in The Police Departments and when The lawsuit comes, Theyre going to defend The officers, thats not equal. Its not an equal playing field. I worry about that as a comprise but like i said, The devil in The details. I dont know everything about what is going on and what is being comprised or talked about at this point. To be comprised. Im not one of The persons that anything is better than nothing. Thats not my philosophy. What i found interesting, as i said in The intro, ten members of The house, democrats, sent a letter saying, you know, no bill Theyre demanding The qualified immunity be in The bill. You can see The pictures of all ten. One person who is not pictured There is you. Why didnt you sign on The letter . I wasnt asked to. Thats what The democratic process is about. The democratic process is about those on eiTher side of The aisle being able to voice Their opinion. To be able to use Their influence. Its that kind of give and take. Its that kind of using your power of when you have an opportunity to do that. But The members who signed, who got togeTher and signed, thats Their right to do so. Thats what They believe in. Im not a part of any letter. Im maxine waters. The same one that has been fighting for so many years who fought against, you know, The Choke Hold thirty some years ago. Who fought on behalf of The citizens when Rodney King was half beaten to death. So i continue my advocacy in The best way i can. And i believe that The police should be held accountable. They should not be, you know, given a Safe Harbor and not be allowed to be sued. Thats where i stand on it. Congresswoman maxine waters, Theres no such thing as im just maxine waters. My party, to this point, said it was hugs and diss. It was anything but what it was what was a trumpinspired insurrection on The capitol. People deserve to hear The truth. Preach preach Congressman Adam King zinger. He spoke truth to his partys lies this morning. It seems unlikely as ever republicans will listen. Joining me now is anna palmer. Michael steele, former Rnc Chairman and host of Michael Steele pod cast. And john walsh. Thank you very much for being here. Okay. Lets have a listen to house Minority Leader Kevin Mccarthy from thursday. I dont think so. Any communication with The people who stormed Capitol Hill . Until The senate, you dont wear a mask. In The house you have to wear a mask. The only difference is The speaker. She doesnt want to abide by The cdc rules. Okay. There are two thins going on There. One, mccarthy talking about The January Ofth commission and Then The mask. The whole masks off for a moment. But, anna, he ended The Press Conference abruptly because someone asked him, hey, are you afraid of people finding out that some of your members were in communication with insurrectionists . How much is that kind of fear driving republican opposition . Particularly house Minority Leader Kevin Mccarthys opposition to The commission . I think republicans in general dont want to be talking about january. I think its The loser of a topic for Them in terms of going into The midterms and its a truly political calculation when you look at The decision for Them not to support The commission at The leadership level. Im not sure its a fear but i think Theres probably, you know, some concern in terms of knowing what members were doing what and Theres been a lot of defenders in terms of those that said some of The things it wasnt an insurrection, it wasnt a mob. That was categorically untrue. Weve seen it over and over again with The more conservative members of his conference and it has to be a concern for leader mccarthy. And in your reporting to shift The conversation to The senate side, is The January Ofth commission, is that going to pass . Because earlier in The sew, Congresswoman Dean coleman also said They were optimistic it could get out of The senate, passed, and to president s desk. I think its a very big uphill climb. You already see Senator Mcconnell come out against it. They have to find ten republicans here and its a big number for Chuck Schumer. The i think we should be looking at is how do They change The bill from The house . Is There some kind of concessions that Chuck Schumer can get in order to move it forward in that in The senate. Right now its not certain at all. Chairman steele, seven republicans in The senate voted to convict Donald Trump and i know, you know, They need to get ten republicans in order to beat The fill butser. My question is, do you think that The seven people, any of The seven people who voted to convict trump will actually vote against a vote will vote no on The commission bill. You know i think its likely. I think, you know, i agree with anna. Its an Uphill Battle because mcconnell already said that hes not supportive of The idea. Here is The thing to note about The Way Mcconnell said it. Theres not a Whipping Effort against this. Theres not a strenuous day if and day out Drum Beat against it. There may be some it goes back to what The members of congress who are speaking about before saying There may be some elements this which he, you know, votes your conscience but know that is watching you kind of deal. You may be able to get to The seven but The remaining three is going to be The difficult who are those three that will join up and give you The ten . Youve got senators now saying, look, were already looking at this. You know, you have Roy Blunt and oThers. Weve got, you know, The work were doing here in The senate. That will come up in june. Were happy with that. They know it wont satisfy The american people. It doesnt get to The heart of involvement of certain members of The house or senate. Thats where everybody is on The tip of The spear at The moment. Its possible but its a long slog. Joan, i mean, its plainly apparent to me The need for The commission. I would argue its plainly apparent to every republican except for Die Hart Conspiracy Theorists well talk about in The next segment. Why Cant Something so simple or easy or plainly apparent, why isnt it going to go anywhere . I might differ a little bit. I think Theres-fear'>Theres Fear. I think Theres-fear'>Theres Fear about i dont know about his own cupability but he could be called to testify about his conversations with trump that day. We know that his account of The conversations has evolved over time. He did with a i asked. He put out The video. So, you know, hes got some worries. Some of his members have worries. The way all of Them at The Press Conference skidded when The question was asked. Almost like They were running away from The mob, i think Theres-fear'>Theres Fear of cop ability. On Mcconnells Side Theres-fear'>Theres Fear of trump and politics. I heard one comprise for The senate giving The commission a deadline so it doesnt bleed into The election year. Which i would support except i dont see how its possible. To really give The commission time to work and do what it needs to do we have no control. And The great thing The interesting comprise that came from The House Side its no longer members of congress doing this. And republicans will have an equal number of appointments of outside people and experts. Criminal justice experts. If it happens, Theres no way to get Mcconnell And Mccarthy to, you know, appoint people quickly. Unless its The Guy And Q anonshaming. We have to take a break. Dont go anywhere. Well, lets have a listen to congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene and what he had to say about masks. This woman is mentally ill. You know, we can look back at a time in history where people were told to wear a Gold Star and They were definitely treated like secondclass citizens. So much so They were put in trains and taken to Gas Chambers and nazi germany. This is The type of abuse that Nancy Pelosi is talking about. And just a point in clarification, she said this woman is mentally ill. Its not a moment of selfreflection. She was talking about Speaker Pelosi. Why is Marjorie Taylor Greene still a Member Of Congress . She is an island of herself and republicans are getting tired of having to defend her and her comments. Theyre so outlandish and outrageous. Theres been a debate among republicans The-house'>In The House about The fact that The speaker is still requiring Them to wear masks. Thats fine to have a Debate And Defense of opinions. Thats not who shes doing here. Yeah no, i mean, she its like every week. Were talking about something she popped off about. It almost makes me wish she was on some congressional committee so shes got something to do. All The free time. Michael Steele Joan youre like no. No committees. Go on. Have at it. No. We dont need to hear anymore from her. Shes not alone. She and Matt Gaetz are a wonderful team. We have a bufblg of These people. It so outrageous. Its beyond outrageous. Its borderline antisemitic. To be that stupid or evil. At her age to not know what The Hole Cast means. If you were eight maybe that would be okay. Someone would say never say that again. Never say that again. Its hurtful and its insane and its mean. But to get to be her age and still be spewing that wearing a mask is like wearing a yellow star and shes being treated like The jews during The holocaust. She should be expelled but she wont be. At least shes not denying The holocaust, which is, you know, actually probably quite surprising given what eiTher way. She is kind of denying it by comparing it to a mask in a way. Shes reduce it to something like mistreatment. You know, so i know what youre saying, jonathan. Youre technically correct but its just you have Matt Gaetz, you know, all his friends are now turning on him when talking to The fed. Why are why is your party still coddling These people . I Cant Answer for The insane. I cant. I mean, how do you i cant. Im not in that space. I refuse to try to pretend. What i do now along with Adam Kinzinger and cheney and a host of oThers to try to push Past And Vet The conversation and hopefully pull thoi from The brink who want to come back from The brink. You have The host of The show sitting There nodding like he Cant Figure out this woman said something that was stupid and push back on it. So youve got this furTher, you know, push into The space. So let Them go. You cannot account for it oTherwise. Well waste a lot of energy trying to do that. Lets move and lets move in The direction in which we can engage in a different way. OTher, you know, turn The lights 0 enand go home. If youre trying explain stupid and you cant. Yeah. You cant explain stupid. What i would love for anna to explain given The Power House that punch Bowl News is, i think its on The front page of The Washington Post today about how President Bidens agenda started out a a Brisk Sprint and now it appears things are slowing down. The George Floyd justice and Policing Act wont meet The deadline. The machinations back and forth over The american Jobs Plan and The american Families Plan and, you know, how that and The momentum behind that might be slowing down. Who is, from your reporting and your perspective, is The biden agenda slowing down . It got off to a big speed with They to deal with The covid issues. Clearly that They had a lot of success if The first hundred days now its The business of governing. And its tricky and it takes a lot little bit more time. I think things have slowed down but i dont think anybody has The anticipation They were going to be able to pass all The things Theyre working on. I think you have to give Them a few more months to see where do They move forward on infrastructure. Can They find some kind of a deal with republicans on Police Reform . A lot of this is kind of extended because you do need to have both parties working togeTher in order to get something enacted. So slower, yes, but i dont know right now The verdict is in in terms of agenda actually stalled. Yeah. And quickly, when it comes The Debt Ceiling is about to rear its ugly head. How ugly is this going to get . Deadlines in congress are what reporters like me live for. It means both side have come togeTher on something and it is dramatic and last minute and you just need to know that going into The fall. But though kind of deadlines really force our mechanism. I knew it was going to be ugly and hard. I think were going have The fall. Before we go, i just want to play once again congressman Adam Kinzinger and what he said earlier today on fox. Because on this show, its The closest 02 going to get to church. Watch. Its sunday. You learn in Sunday School truth matters. The american people deserve The truth. And my party, to this point, said it was hugs and kisses, it was blm. Anything but what it was a trump inspired insurrection on The capitol. People deserve to hear The truth. The translation, The more things change, The more things stay The same. So many strands of our past and present intertwined this week that i couldnt help but think of that phrase. Viola fletcher testified before House Subcommittee on wednesday about The Tulsa Race Massacre that 100 years ago at The-end'>The End of this month obliterated The thriving black community of greenwood and killed as many as 300 people. MoTher fletcher, as shes known, was 7 years old Then, and told The committee that she still lives with The horror of that time. Some may forget this history but i cannot, i will not. And oTher survivors do not. And our descendants do not. I am 107 years old and have never seen justice. I pray that one day i will. On tuesday, The nation will mark one year since The murder of George Floyd under The knee of former Minneapolis Police officer derek chauvin. At The behest of The governor, minnesotas state Attorney General, keith ellison, took over The prosecution of chauvin and won a case that scratched at that time our nations raw racial wounds. In an interview friday, i asked ellison to react to The words you just heard from Ther-fletcher'>MoTher Fletcher. He drew a parallel that was as startling as it was apt. What i will say is that There was a Little Girl whose name is judea. She was 9 years old when she witnessed officers murder George Floyd. Imagine that Little Girl 100 years from now, testifying on what she had to live through and what she had to see. What judea had to see was The same as The poster of The video of The incident posted to facebook. It reveals what black folks have known for generations. Lying about The deaths of black people at The hands of police, by police, happens a lot. We saw it in The water scott case, The laquan mcdonald case, and The Associated Press released horrific video on how Ronald Greene died in louisiana. Trying to get us not to believe our lying eyes isnt just something some cops do. Its what republicans are doing when it comes to The violent insurrection of The capitol on January 6. It wasnt a normal tourist visit. Those people stormed The u. S. Capitol to overturn a president ial election at The behest of The loser who lost The election. To perpetuate this lie in furTherance of The Big Lie is disgusting. And to block The January 6 commission to investigate what happened in a vain effort to pretend that nothing happened because of fear of The loser who lost The election is beyond spineless. In her written testimony, Ther-fletcher'>MoTher Fletcher used this political cowardice to highlight The harm done by pretending nothing happened and The need to make black tulsa whole. I saw what happened here on January 6th this year. It broke my heart. It reminded me of what happened 100 years ago. And now i hear some of you on tv saying it didnt happen like we didnt see it with our own eyes. It happened on live tv. 100 years ago, There was no tv. But you have me here right now. WheTher its The Tulsa Race Massacre, The lies about how black people die at The hands of police, or The January 6th insurrection, The refrain is The same. New and disparate Reaction Today to The prospects for a commission to investigate The January 6 capitol attack. The u. S. Senate is expected to take up a house dshhousepassed days. Republicans and democrats are at odds over wheTher an independent commission is necessary ahead of that vote. Theres a bipartisan effort in The senate with two committees to produce not only a report but also a number of recommendations. And we should be able to do that in The first full week of june. And we havent even waited for that to decide what a commission should do. So Theres a lot we know but a lot more that we dont know. We have to figure out The minimal physical security changes that we need to make.
