No coverup here. We know what happened. Just days ago senator Ron Johnson of wisconsin publicly said January 6 photos from which you are looking at now a peaceful protest. Marjorie Taylor Greene said on the floor of congress, the same floor here overrun by pro trump Insurrectionists Intent on murdering Members Of Congress and Mike Pence said the people that breached the capitol on January 6 are being abused. The fbi is released these new photos of two suspects at large seen attacking allegedly officers with various weapons. Several Capitol Police officers lost their arrives as a result of the attack. Scores more were wounded and now politico reports more than 70 left the force following the insurrection. The insurrection as former president faces three lawsuits for the role in the attack in addition to a slew of other lawsuits and now the new York Attorney generals afs with the Manhattan District attorney opened an investigation looking at trumps businesses to inflate the value of asets for Tax Breaks and loans. The new York Attorney Generals Office is also announced criminally investigating the personal taxes of allen weise sellberg, the long term cfo. Thats the man that signed the checks and knows the Inner Workings of the Trump Family better than anyone. Starting the day he fled washington for florida, through the end of april, the former president has charged the United States Secret Service more than 40,000 for rooms they used while guarding and protecting him at maralago. Put it this way. Trump is charging arent to his own protectors which is actually paid for by all of us. The american taxpayer. Joining me right now a pulitzer winning reporter with the Washington Post and Zero Fail is now out. Its a great read. And its a second one put out in just a little while. Carol, i want to talk to you about developments in washington with respect to the January 6 commission. We are expecting the senate to vote on it this week. At the moment if youre a betting person i wouldnt bet that it passes. This is an issue where republicans rather they can the heat now publicly for not approving the commission than deal with the results at the end of the year or january of next year. I think youre right. Im in the reporting business, not the speculating business, but it all looks pretty much doomed. A commission is untenable for many republican leaders for two major reasons. One, many of their supporters believe that Conspiracy Theories that the election was stolen and that these rioters trying to quote unquote stop the steal were doing the right thing. Second, Republican Lawmakers had conversations with Donald Trump apparently before, during and after this siege and a commission is going to be looking at what Republican Lawmakers themselves were doing that would have encouraged this as you can see terribly frightening attack on Law And Order. The republican party is the Law And Order party. The President Trump said he was the Law And Order president but here you see Police Officers being basically attacked, assaulted and one of them died that day. Lets talk about the Secret Service. This is becoming an area of your specialty. Whats normal for a president after being president . Donald trump would be getting some protection. The bill seemed shocking. 40,000 for accommodations for Secret Service but what should we know about this . So under the law every former president is going to have lifetime protection from the Secret Service. Its going to be a tiny fraction of what the president received when he was actually in office. So you know, there are Secret Service agents now with Michelle And Barack obama and with George And Laura bush why it is a tiny detail in comparison to the city that follows an acting president around but one thing thats always been unprecedented about Donald Trumps interaction with the Secret Service is the money and the amount of money that is paid to his personal business from Taxpayer Dollars has always been on the very high side. So for example, there was a lot of fuss made about the amount of money that then Vice President biden was charging for the use of a part of the property for the Secret Service to protect him when he was a Vice President. A part of his a Gate House essentially in delaware. It was peanut compared to what detail officers are charged and as you rightly pointed out u. S. Taxpayers pay for Renting Rooms at the very nice and expensive maralago. Good to see you. Congratulations on the new book. The Washington Post reporter and she is the author of Zero Fail. Joining me is democratic Congressman Jamie Raskin from maryland. You will remember that he served as the Lead Impeachment Manager this year in Donald Trumps second impeachment trial. Congressman, good to see you. Its been a long time and glad to have you back on the show. Great to see you. You delivered the impassioned argument about Donald Trump and the role in a number of things but very specifically in January 6. What is important for people to remember who are thinking about why do we need this January 6 commission given that we had the impeachment. People asked me, whats the difference going to be . We still have a lot more questions than we have answers. We dont know about how these events were fully organized and mobilized. We dont know about the extent of coordination among the proud boys and the 3 percenters and the oathkeepers and how much the Trump Organization facilitated the mobilization of the mob from around the country as Liz Cheney put it when she said he incited the mob. So theres a lot we know and a lot more we dont know. And look. Can you imagine any other country in the world that endured a violent assault on its national legislature that would not create a commission to get to the bottom of the events to figure out the causes and then how to prevent it from happening in the future . So we have to figure out both the minimal physical security changes that need to be made but also how to deal with the problem of domestic violent extremism. Violent white supremacy which the department of Homeland Security has said is the major number one Terror Threat in the country right now. I would argue looking at the 9 11 commission underlying sources and the threat they pose is the best reason. Mario rubio said this is punitive to make the republican party look bad but it should have a bigger goal of that the threat that existed before January 6 manifested in a serious way and has not gone away. Thats right. Look. Mario Rubios Position is outlandish. For one thing, the proposal which came from the democratic chair of the Homeland Security committee and the Ranking Member the Republican John Katko is perfectly bipartisan. Five republican members, five democratic members. Equal Subpoena Power on both sides. They got everything they wanted and wont accept yes for an answer in the leadership considering the truth a democratic trap. Imagine the absolute moral degeneration of a political party which considers getting to the truth behind an event as a form of partisanship. On the contrary this is what america needs to know to prevent it in the future. They are the partisan joke if they cant handle the truth. But i will commend the 35 republicans on the House Side who voted with us to create the commission. And note that thats more than three times the number of republicans in the house who voted to impeach so getting more than three times the republican senators that we got to convict that would be 21 republicans voting with us so i hope that those people will do their patriotic duty here. Senator Ron Johnson said it was like a normal day with tourists. I say this to you because you were at work that day and with your daughter. You had brought your daughter to work and i recall you saying how scarred she was. Well, if the violent insurrection which left five people dead and 140 Police Officers wounded and dozens of them in the hospital was like a Tourist Visit then the Civil War is like a nature hike. I mean it makes no sense what theyre saying. Theyre asking everybody to buy into President Trumps Big Lie, essentially the perimeter of the Big Lie is expanding from the president ial election. You have to say Donald Trump won it to January 6 to say that his followers entered hugging and kissing the Police Officers. Its completely fraudulent and voltaire said anyone can make you commit atrocities and tragic to see the republican party continuing to march over a cliff like this. So were looking for republicans who can just do their job the way that Liz Cheney and John Katko and Adam Kinzinger and others have done. Republicans voted to convict Donald Trump. There were senators who did the right thing so we know that they can. They should not cement the moral collapse of the republican party going away with Donald Trumps coverup because he is behind it. If he said i support the commission they would all be voting for it so theyre behavesing like a religious cult. Representative raskin, good to see you. Thank you for joining us this morning. I will have much more on the fight for the commission. But ill also talk about the status of the Infrastructure Negotiations and well dive into the fight to end poverty and the ceasefire in the Middle East continues the hold for now. Senate republicans are likely throwing away hope of a bipartisan agreement on infrastructure rejecting the offer of a 1. 7 trillion package which is a reduction from bidens original plan that totalled 2. 3 trillion. Republicans still say the Price Tag is too high. The White House responding with the following statement. The president put forward a reasonable offer in the interest of finding common ground. The ball is now in their court to respond with a good faith Counter Offer. The team set a soft deadline of Memorial Day to see if a deal is within reach and on the docket is the bill to form a commission and could be the first of the biden era to die under the filibuster threshold. Joining me is democratic Senator Padilla of california, the State Secretary of state for six years so i want to talk to him about that stuff. Senator, i have had to practice a few times and first time to have you on as senator instead of Secretary Padilla but you are in a dysfunctional place and should be low Hanging Fruit for approval the investigate of the causes of the january insurrection. I dont think that should be the most comply kated thing that the senate will face but that attempt may face this week, a bipartisan commission in both parties have had input into the creation. Good morning. Good to be back with you. Youre absolutely right. It was pretty clear after 9 11 that we needed to act and congress acted in a bipartisan basis to establish a commission to look at what happened. A significant event in the nations history. After the great recession there was a commission to create policy and the same needs to be done in response to the deadly not just violent but deadly insurrection that took place on January 6. Sadly what we are hearing is trump is gone. Trumpism is clearly not and we have a party across the aisle choosing to put unity over honesty. I want to talk to you then in that Cone Text about infrastructure. One hand im quite amazed and pleased to be reporting what i reported and that is the White House had a number. The republican some republican senators didnt like that number and the White House changed and said its up to the republicans to come back with something else. It feels like negotiation on infrastructure. Am i right or being duped . Look. Definitely know that the White House starting with President Biden himself and frankly senate democrats are making genuine good faith efforts to work with the republican colleagues, to try to do this on a bipartisan basis as investment in the infrastructure should be and let me just say this. Its not just addressing the maintenance and moving on. It is imperative to invest and keep us safe, secure and competitive in the decades ahead. We had an initial proposal. Republicans come back with a Counter Offer a fraction of the investment. And look. President biden to his credit took a very modest step in their direction and their description is that we get further apart here . How does that work . That is not a sign of good faith negotiations on their part. Theres still time but democrats will exercise any and all options for getting this done. Evaluate for me then how you think the biden administration is doing. Theres fractions within the Democratic Party saying that the republicans wont support The Things and will take credit for a benefit they bring like the Relief Act so democrats should just move forward with what their Agenda Items are now and get them done in the face of the republican party. Personally i agree. To be able to do this through reconciliation is a heck of a card in the Back Pocket when youre negotiating. Lets make an Effort And Cant afford to wait. We must move forward. The ball is in their court as the president said. We know we need it. Our Transportation Infrastructure needs it. Our Electrical Grid needs it. Broadband needs it. The Health Care system, the housing, the education infrastructure, so will elements of the Nations Infrastructure is in dire need of investment. I wonder if you have your secretary of State Hat nearby. In california absolutely. Republicans there theyre calling far Election Recount and sounds like Maricopa County and what is going on in arizona will be repeated in Fulton County In Georgia and wisconsin and michigan and pennsylvania. This is a big problem because what these are is efforts to undermine faith in voting that Donald Trump started undermining last year. How do you see this as somebody that had to oversee elections . This is nothing other than an effort to undermine public confidence in our election. Look. We go back to the 2016 cycle and multiple elections in between. When you undermine confidence in elections it encourages eligible voters to not participate. That is not good for the democracy. That is a definition of voter suppression. Pay attention. In california and most jurisdictions the audits are required and put if place exactly for that reason to ensure Faith And Confidence not just in the electoral process but the election results. So its heres whats sad. Dealing with this for years and years and a direct tie to the January 6 commission you started with. In 2016 clearly documented foreign interference in the Election And President of the united states in denial about that. We fused to acknowledge it. Now a deadly January 6 insurrection fueled by the Big Lie and we have a political party thats in denial about that and wants to put any investigation, any accountability under the rug. I was talking to the former Arizona Attorney general woods earlier saying look, this has to fall to the united states congress. Senates got to push voting rights. No doubt. We have both the John Lewis Voting rights act necessary but not a substitute for hr 1 or s 1 on the senate side. Theres a looming question of filibuster and maybe the January 6 commission if it fails to pass on the Senate Floor is this what breaks the filibusters back or not . Theres a long list of Agenda Items to be acted on and the filibuster obstructs so it is time to get rid of it. Thank you for joining us this morning. We look forward to many more conversations. Theres a resolution of the third reconstruction designed to improve the lives of millions of people in the nation. Among many things it aims to update the Way Poverty is measured to reflect a livable wage in this country and seeks to develop a federal Jobs Program to prioritize those that need the help the most. Im joined by democratic Congresswoman Barbara Lee of california. Good morning to you. Thank you for joining us and doubly from california at this ridiculous hour. But this is a very, very important topic. We have poverty in this country and always shocking to good minded americans to understand how many people are food insecure and living in a situation that sounds and feels like poverty. Well, good morning. Im happy to be with you. I want to thank you for focusing on this issue of poverty because the Covid Pandemic shown a light on and exacerbated the issue of poverty, poor people, low wealth people, people barely surviving with 7. 25 Minimum Wage. And so what we have seen in this Covid Pandemic, it is unfortunate. It is really horrific. We are in a state of emergency. You see middle income people in Food Lines to get boxes of food to feed the family. People who have never had to ask the government for anything and so now you have 8 Million more people in the country living behind the Poverty Line and before covid we had 250,000 people each every year dying as a result of poverty. So what is look. Im an economics reporter. Talk to me about what the legislative fix for this is. What you are trying to do. What can you do through legislation to alleviate some of this . Sure. Thank you for that again and you laid out the general parameters but our legislation and i have to just the poor Peoples Campaign and Congressman Jaypal and we have developed with the inputt of people who are living under poverty and a crisis every day pathways out of poverty. We must make the Child Tax Credit permanent. It is lifting 50 of children from poverty. We must increase the Minimum Wage to 15 to a living wage. We must provide for clean water in communities. We have communities with lead in their water. Just the basics to raise the standard of living. We have laid out in the resolution and how we pay for it and we have to address the huge Defense Budget calling for a 10 cut which is just right now about 72 billion. That will help in many ways. House the unhoused. So we do have in our Legislation Ways and pathways out of poverty that the majority of people in the country would embrace once we put this resolution forward and have our hearings. Were big fans of the poor Peoples Campaign here on the show. One of The Things i say to my Staff Booking William is he understands numbers and how it affects people but part of the issue talking about a basic minimum wake for people. Youre right. People vote in favor for this and cant get it done. What do we have to do to start to think to invest in the poorest among us. Not only deserving but spend the money that guarantees the way that the Economy Moves properly. We have to form as is talked about a Fusion Collision and i believe now because of the poor Peoples Campaign and the people that weighed in in terms of this resolution is on board and make sure that people hold the elected officials accountable. You cant tell me that making sure that everyone has access to Health Care Isnt something that people want and this is a political struggle and we have to make sure that we in our resolution many of the provisions have already been introduced as bills and moving through the process. Some President Biden can Issue Executive order and working with the administration to see where they can weigh in and Issue Executive orders and of course we have the political dynamics in the senate with the you know, close numbers in terms of trying to get anything passed but where theres a will theres a way and the people in this country are crying out for help. Theyre Living On The Edge and we have a Duty And Responsibility to help those who have no money, who have no wealth, no resources and just are barely surviving day after day. The Covid Crisis exacerbated it but it also shown a light on the horrific conditions in the wealthiest and most powerful country in the world. No one should have to go to bed hungry or live on the streets in america. Yet tens of millions do. We our efforts to eliminate poverty in this country will be a promise to create a better country. Thank you. We have heard from a few lawmakers this morning about the political fight to establish a January 6 Commission And Push to hold accountable the people that threatened the lives of people at the capitol that day and democracy. Many republicans seem to be opposed. That discussion continues today with jonathan capehart. This puzzles me. You understand washington and politics better than me. This feels like, hey, in the Morning Nail a Post Officer and then put this commission together to study not to have january happen again. I dont get why its as probable attic as it is. It is low Hanging Fruit and they decided to pretend like it didnt happen and want to move on to other things like not governing but well be talking to congresswoman Dean And Bonnie Watson Coleman about the experience on January 6. They were there in the capitol when that happened. Then well have robert moore. He is a Television Journalist with british itv, the only journalist embedded with the insurrectionists that day and a documentary out also and talking to him about what was happening and then as we all know tuesday is the Oneyear Anniversary of the murder of George Floyd. Tuesday marks The One year since the murder of George Floyd, an injustice that sparked a national reckoning in america why tuesdays also President Bidens self imposed deadline to pass the George Floyd justice in Policing Act though that deadline now seems out of reach. Biden will mark the anniversary of the murder hosting members of George Floyds family at the White House. We witnessed accountability in policing when Derek Chauvin was convicted of floyds murder. There he is taken out of court and hard to say whether it resulted in real change because videos and reports of Police Violence against Black Americans emerge on an almost regular basis. Just last Month Andrew brown jr. Shot and killed by police in North Carolina why the District Attorney determined that the officers were justified in the actions because brown was using the car as a deadly weapon. Still learning details of Ronald Greene who died after a Police Encounter two years ago in rural louisiana. Body Cam Video shows that State Troopers stunned, dragged and Beat Greene after a Traffic Stop and then told his family that he died in a car crash. That was an absolute and complete lie and thoshts in louisiana knew for two years. The desperate need for better policing is upon us but the prospect continues to be fraught. Joining me is the Staff Writer at the new yorker. Good morning to both of you. This deadline of march 25th, the anniversary of George Floyds murder for getting the bill done, always a fan of not having deadlines because even activists and democrats working on the legislation and some republicans showing interest have said lets do this right and not do it in a hurry. I dont know whether its getting done and sounds like theres movement. Yeah. It seems like it. The thing about the deadline is that certainly is freighted with symbolic weight but the greater importance is whether or not you have a bill that passes that actually makes some substantive change and so We Saw when Tim Scott on the republican side came out to start to negotiate in what appeared to be good faith to create a bill that republicans would sign on with and giving the response to the Joe Biden Speech i think attempted to pave over a political path for colleagues to sign on for it. We dont know. And then obvious curiously We Saw Jim Clyburn say that qualified immunity didnt have to be part of this bill and certainly defang or kind of make it a far less significant as a piece of legislation if you didnt talk about qualified immunity. The element of the law that immunizes police from the actions that result in deaths like this. Its an interesting case because Jim Clyburn is somebody who has worked for a long time to get deals done and spoke to a person on Friday Night that said he cannot support a bill with most of the stuff and some improvements to the Way Policing is conducted in america but without qualified immunity and the police have against civil lawsuits for wrongdoing. Yeah. Look. We know that politics is all about the art of the possible and there are a lot of competing voices in this including voices within the Democratic Party, voices within the Activist Community who have differing opinions about what a final version of this bill should look like. I think its exactly to the point that the deadline i think a lot of that was about trying to really harness the moment. We have seen in the last year with the protests that are ongoing. In cities that diverse group of americas really signaling an increased support for the idea of black lives matter, that somebody must be done. The inequality and the policing in communities of color and unrelenting feeling of pandemic. So what lawmakers have been telling me, people like is that really focusing on the substantive bit. Even if thats not something happening by tuesday which i know a lot of journalists like to focus on the deadline because the president put that out there that they wanted to see this happen by the anniversary of George Floyds death why the fact that this is ongoing work and tim Scott And Senator booker talking about and try to figure out a path to making this legislation a reality i think is what the lawmakers and activists are saying to focus on now because tuesday while the country will mark this Anniversary And Everything that came out of it i think that they want to emphasize that the work continues. Booker and scott are not badmouths the process saying theres still progress to be had. Paul butler the prosecutor who we often have on wrote an Opinion Piece the other day in the Washington Post saying police have a dangerous Dead Or Alive mentality. If you look at that video of Ronald Greene, it is a similar situation. The defense that a lot of police have, few are prosecuted but the defense that so many have is if i didnt do this i would be dead. And a tell me that theres got to be reprogramming around the fact that every black person you meet or every Black Man you meet is not actually a threat. Right. I mean, so i think its a curious kind of disjuncture here where we say that we have a Warrior Mentality with our Police Department and weve militarized them in particular ways. We now see, you know, strangely, one of the strange developments i first noted in ferguson was the number of Police Officers wearing camouflage which makes no sense. You are in a suburb. What are you trying to camouflage yourself from . So we have this Creeping Militarization of the police, but then a very different ethic from the military. You would never hear the Military Say at the end of the day, my job is just to come home safely. Your job is to complete the mission. If that means putting yourself in harms way, so be it. The idea, supposedly, is to serve and protect. And so if you say that your job is to serve and protect but your main priority is making sure that you ensure your own personal safety, then those two things are at odds. What we see is the kind of exacerbation or seeing every individual as a potential threat, a Potential Assailant and its had deadly consequences. Hang on to both of you. I want to have a quick Discussion But Weve got to pay the bills. Well have more after this short break. Are you tired of clean clothes that just dont smell clean . Well, ali, The Thing is, if you are somebody who is committed to the Big Lie, you are not somebody who is going to be committed to a factfinding mission, even if it is from an independent commission that is going to come up with a result that is, you know, assumedly going to be unimpeachable by either party, right . Its not something that Members Of Congress are really supposed to be a part of because its supposed to be a more 9 11style Commission and yet, you know, if you have folks who are committed to the idea that these images on the screen were part of a peaceful Tourist Group just visiting the capitol on a regular day, then, no, you dont think that a January 6th commission is necessary to figure out what those tourists were doing there that day. Jelani, i want to ask you about a tweet you sent. You wrote, among the more surprising revelations in my professional life is how easily powerful institutions can be intimidated. This became incredibly obvious during the Trump Era and continues to be very clear now. Power and cowardice are not at all mutually exclusive. There are a number of stories going on right now this tweet could apply to. Sure. It applies to how congress and the republican party just caved in the face of Donald Trump. It applies to the generally cowardly stance that many Media Institutions took toward trump and trumpism. It applies to the university of North Carolina where we just saw the journalist Nicole Hannah jones be denied tenure despite being qualified for a position all due to political pressure. And the deference to the desires of kind of demagogic crowd. And so, yeah, thats one of The Things thats been really shocking and surprising to me that institutions that are the cornerstone of our democracy are so easily rolled in moments like this. Errin, we pride ourselves on this show on having very, very smart people. Nicole Hannah Jones is a frequent guest on this show. Ive been pretty clear with my viewers that my goal is not to have people who agree with them or agree with me or agree with anybody. It is to have smart people present interesting theses for us to think about. Thats what Nikole Hannahjones and the 1619 project did. A university, on one hand, which is supposed to be about speech and a Journalism Program at a university on the other hand, seemed to be bowing to pressure on nikole, on them, to not give nikole tenure. I definitely found that one surprising. Well, The Thing that you have to understand, ali, is somebody who has long written about race in my career, to talk about race, to tell the truth about race in this country is to be up against these kinds of forces. And thats whether that is coming from the president of the united states, from Members Of Congress, from the general public or, in this case, from a university system. And so, you know, there are certain truths about this country, especially truths that bump up against the myths that we hold so dear as part of our Origin Story that too many people still, you know, would just rather not hear. With nikole really trying to square this Countrys History with its ideals and themes as a democracy trying to become a more perfect union, the backlash continues. And this is really just the latest chapter in that backlash and unfortunately, while there are may be people who have hailed the 1619 project for its honesty, there are too many who would just as soon rather not hear the truth. Much road to walk on this road to a more perfect union. Thanks to both of you. Great to talk to you. Jelani cobb, errin haines. Thank you for watching velshi. Catch me here every saturday and sunday morning. Its snack time for me but stick around because the Sunday Show with jonathan capehart, which im going to be watching while eating my snack, starts right now. Republicans are still lying about the need for a January 6th commission. Theres no coverup here. So what is this about . Ill tell you what this is about. First thing that stood out. This is about politics. Two key members of the house who were there that day join me live. As will the only journalists who reported from inside the violent insurrection. One year since the murder of George Floyd. Attorney Ben Crump on his Legacy And Congresswoman Maxine Waters on whats happening with the Police Reform Bill that bears his name. And republican recount madness. Arizonas just the beginning. Im jonathan capehart. This is the Sunday Show. This sunday, the fate of an independent commission to investigate the Capitol Insurrection rests in the senate. After the house voted to approve a January 6th commission last week with 35 republicans breaking ranks to vote yes, the bill could make it to the Senate Floor in the next few days. A handful of Senate Republicans have expressed openness to a commission, but a growing number have already Flat Out said no. Particularly after watching their Minority Leader do this 180. Theres no question, none, that President Trump is practically and morally responsi
