Fingers tightly crossed. This morning californias great America Theme Park opened to visitors for the first time in more than a year. California outlined plans for a full reopening on june 15th, although large events will still have some safety precautions. I understand that you have been getting back on the stage, doing standup again at some of the clubs around New York that have reopened. How is it going so far . Awkward. I mean it is a lot better than performing in a parking lot. We tried that, joshua. Thats not good because we always prefer laughter over people blinking their headlights and horns. But, yeah, youre performing behind a sheet of plastic, thats weird. But, of course, it is material. But getting out and enjoying live performance and performing really is amazing. Last night my wife and i even got invited over to friends houses. You may not know it, joshua, but we do have a few friends. They invited us over and i didnt know how to greet people. I think it is one of the struggles people are having, is how do i now behave . Am i shaking hands, do you hug, can we get close, what changes . So theres a lot of learning and i dont think were ever going back to normal, and i think it is important to admit. Don, what about that . I mean i had a similar experience this week. I went to the gym for the first time without masks. Other people didnt have their masks on. I kind of slowly took mine off and i realized it was the first time i had ever been in that gym and seen peoples faces. I joined the gym like right before the Pandemic And Havent seen a Human Face in there since i pretty much joined. What is your sense, don, of whether or not were even ready to kind of ditch the masks yet . Well, i think that regardless of what we know about the science, the medical science or even the legalities of everything, i think were coming to terms right now with the idea that covid was a deep psychological wound on people. People are going to have to come to terms with what they feel safe with in their own time, and so im told that the best accessory for the summer is a mask around the wrist to show that, yes, you are vaccinated so youre not wearing it, but you are still covid conscious and you want to make others comfortable so you can put it on and off, comparable to what other people around you are feeling. A mask around the wrist you said . Around the wrist. You rock it around the wrist to show people it is Virtue Signaling, yes, pete. It is virtual signaling, but it is to acknowledge that covid is still there. I can put it on if you feel uncomfortable by i am vaccinated. I think the thing were coming to terms with is regardless of what the law says, regardless of what the medical science is, it is a deeply psychological wound and we have to give People Space to reopen at their own pace. Hang on a seconds. Im not knocking it. Im trying to try it. I want to understand. Hang on. In your pocket probably is fine. Well, im just trying to understand. You Cant Virtue Signal unless people can see it, pete. You have to have it on the wrist. Hang on. Joshua doesnt know how to tie it. Thats one of the main issues here. It is like a it is like a sort of a perfect. Like a Covid Corsage, is this how im supposed to wear it . It is better than an ascot. Is it though . I would rather have an ascot. Rena, i understand where don is coming from in sort of the way we culturally telegraph where we are with the pandemic, especially after Virtue Signaling and kind of covid cultural signals got super political last year. I think maybe Thats Part of why we are a little timid right now in terms of how to deal with one another. Yeah, no doubt. Let me just for like now, so i highly recommend one. With regard to travel, cnbc reported on a study that found unvaccinated americans, unvaccinated, are less worried about traveling than vaccinated americans are. Im not sure what to make of that, especially since it is still possible that the airlines may let push come to shove and say you may not want to get vaccinated, but if you want to travel in this way or to these places you may have no choice. So what you are telling me is that there is data saying that people who have not gotten vaccinated, people who are not now immune pretty much to the vaccine are more excited, more likely, more ambitious to go out On The Road than those of us that have been vaccinated . Claiming to be less worried. It is sadly unsurprising, isnt it, guys . In this country where a lot of people stopped believing in things that are actually happening right in front of their faces, i mean these are the type of people who are fine to Go On, you know, a cruise where everybody is getting a virus. Well, i just want to Go On a cruise, dont Tell Me What to do. This idea of, ill do whatever i want whenever i want, to who and however i want, is part of the problem. We cant be doing this. You got to get vaccinated, but i think it comes with the attitude as well as this antiscience thread we have, which is another whole virus in our country for too long. Thats kind of what i wondered on. Don, i wonder about that because thats what people say. When push comes to shove what people do may vary. I mean we heard from the White House this week it has parted with a number of Dating Apps like tinder and bumble and others whose names i dont know, that they are offering a way to kind of, you know what . I dont use dont get In My Life. No, not at all. Journalists. Dont judge me for My Life. Theyre apps offering a boost to singles that get vaccinated, that you can note on certain profiles that you have been vaccinated. Now, these are apps that cater mostly to heterosexual people. I dont know about apps like Scruff And Grinder and others that are more popular with gay men who have been active in trying to improve the way men talk about safer sex, hiv status, et cetera. Right. But, don, i see the value of signaling that. Theres a big difference between what people say and what they do when push comes to shove. Yeah, theres a big value in signaling it, but the reality is that theres just tremendous value in people having the open discussions. Are you vaccinated or not . Because it is just like, you know, you mentioned sexual activity. You have to give people the agency to choose if they want to, you know, convene with those who are vaccinated or not. People have to have the ability to choose, and the reality is that science aside and, you know, the idea that ive been vaccinated and i have not keeled over, all of that aside, you know, it is a deeply personal decision. We are talking about an invasive procedure, minimally invasive but invasive. You are putting something in your body and not everybody wants to do that. Vaccine hesitancy is a very, very real thing. I think those of us on the political and ideological left, particularly those of us that live in the northeast or the coast, we need to understand Vaccine Hesitancy is real and it has a lot to do with region in this country, it has a lot to do with Socioeconomic Status and it doesnt make them dumb or lesser than us as people. But we need to understand people are not all the same place on this thing. I would also note, we talked to Andy Slavitt from the white House Yesterday for the week on peacock, and he noted some people are not necessarily hesitant, they put it down their priority list. They will do it, they will just get around to doing it. Then dont travel. Well, i hear you on that. But that they will eventually get it done, they are just doing it at a different speed. I think we have reena back. I think we cleaned up the connection and i believe we were talking about the political energy that went around some of the kind of covid Virtue Signaling. Well, yeah. I mean, Number One on capitol hill, i will be honest, i was shocked to hear how some republicans still dont want this vaccine, knowing that they were first in line and that now they want to use it as this whole truly to really dehumanize their followers in congress. Thats the problem now, is that you have people who genuinely want to use this are you vaccinated, not vaccinated as something that infringes on personal liberty. We are all coming out of this so different, right, josh . We have done so many different things. I wore a mask on a chain as like a necklace for most of last year. I enjoyed doing so. To me it made it more convenient. I masked up whenever people signalled to me maybe they may feel more comfortable. I have been fully vaccinated since february. The thing that got me though to other potentially we get it has become an open dialogue. In some ways i think it has been detrimental to the psyches of some of us. Yeah. Because the reality is a lot of kids still cant get vaccinated. Thats a bigger part of this, is what am i to do when i go around with my 3 year old and my 5 year old . They are at risk and they also go to school now. Right. So we are all coming out so different, and we need to talk about how we treat each other in different situations, in different environments. The images now being reviewed by a Government Task Force set to brief congress next month on what they call unidentified aerial phenomenon. Theres clearly a stigma around talking to ufos. Currently the current term, unidentified aerial phenomenon. A former Navy Pilot acknowledged it to 60 minutes. She says her colleagues saw a uap while on patrol. If i saw this solo, i dont know that i would have come back and said anything because it sounds so crazy when i say it. And as it was wrote about in a recent New York times column, quote, even if you think all discussion of aliens is ridiculous, it is fun to let the mind roam over the implications. What is true, and im actually being serious here, is that there are Theres Footage and records of objects in the skies that we dont know exactly what they are. Now, pete, i could see the president s gears turning as he is thinking, like, do i say this, do i not say it . I dont know. I think im going to say it and he says it. Like, what do you make of it . I dont know what to make of any of this. What do you think . I have a lot of questions about this. I have been following this. I think it is really interesting and very important, and i think that, you know, President Obama on that interview basically said he was the former president , Commander In Chief for eight years. He had president ial daily briefings and he goes on tv and says something all of us already know. Look, sometimes we could tell you, you look up, you see things, they dont look normal. Thank you, sir. Give us something give us something. He cant give us anything though. What could you actually give us . Theres a lot of questions about the existential dread people feel knowing or not knowing what it might be and whether or not he can give us, but theres also, you know, so many other foreign countries who also have investigations into this. I think the one thing that makes me feel kind of on solid ground with what we know is that if Donald Trump knew anything, he would be blurting it out. So either they didnt tell him or he doesnt know. But Gideon Louis Krause in the New Yorkers, it is like a 7,000 Page Piece on this which i highly recommend everybody read, but it goes in deep depth on what we know and what this could be. But the one phrase that, you know, people keep using is the idea that there is no visible form of propulsion on these things. They go 80,000 feet in less than a second. If a Human Body were in that, it would turn to soup, they say. So theres a lot of questions. Don, here is my big question. There may be something out there, and i am not knocking Space Exploration. Space exploration is necessary for our understanding of the universe. But we have displayed the depths or the shallowness rather of our Science Literacy with this pandemic. We were not able as a Human Race to wrap around the fact that viruses and vaccines are known science, that the capacity of your Covid Corsage to prevent you getting killed is knowable science. If we werent ready for covid, we arent able to go to aliens. We aint ready for warp speed. Just start with the Covid Corsage. How are we ready for this conversation at all . Were not ready. What we know about the pentagon, not far from my house right here, and i will be measured, is that you ought to know. Theyre a sophisticated organization. It is highly professionalized, and a part of every Government Operation administratively is a highly sophisticated, professionalized communication department. They would not have released this and they would not be discussing this until theres an internal conversation among serious and smart people, dare i say experts, who say, you know what . We know something is happening, maybe we should start to sprinkle a little bit out in the public to see how people react, just to see whether or not people freak out and then we will decide whether or not we can talk about the rest of what we know slowly over time. But i think listen, i dont Know Nothing. To quote The Great Man who says that he knows nothing at all, i Know Nothing at all. What i understand is the pentagon put a lot of thought and time into saying, we probably perhaps should say something. Yeah. And begin to prepare the american people for a discussion of this magnitude. Reena, i think we have the connection cleaned up. I want to take the Flip Side of this. The Flip Side as i think about it is at least this has the benefit of getting people talking about Space Exploration and about science. You cant always choose what it is that fires peoples imagination. You know, generations ago it was Star Trek that fired peoples imagination about Space Exploration, Created Inroads for nichols to increase the number of people in nasa and in Jpl And Cal tech and in aerospace. So maybe theres a Back End to this, regardless of whether we find anything, that could really be good for us in general. And i would be remiss if i didnt say how excited i was to learn the other day that im distantly related to the late astronaut nichella, the first South Asian woman to go into space. My mother growing up in india was absolutely obsessed with her, and i was too just learning about her life. I think it is important we have the curiosity about what is out there. But the reality is a ufo is just that, an unidentified flying object. It doesnt give us proof of extra terrestrial or aliens. Thats the part that gets people in a panic, right . Is are there other intelligent life forms out there, and i actually believe there are but we have no way of knowing right now. We are so far away from that. I love to analogize all of this to an ant in my backyard. That Ants Concept of really its universe is literally just a few feet. If it sees me on a day, thats its entire concept of what is out there. We are simply that way. Here we sit and we know there are other galaxies out there. We have only done so little, we tapped a little bit of the bit. We know there are others out there. But lets talk about solar systems and galaxies and the way we fit in. Yeah. So just by virtue of the evidence thats already out there, i think we all sort of know that there are other intelligent life forms out there, we just have no pathway of knowing. Now, if our governments know that, if other foreign governments know that or whether ours know that, i think theyre not going to let us know at all because they dont want to send people into a panic. Right. Lets not forget what happened a few decades ago with that, what was it, war of the worlds, a radio program. Yes. People literally committed suicide because they were worried. They thought aliens were coming. They couldnt see it as fiction. I worry a little bit about the panic that could ensue from government letting us know more. Back in 1938 when cbs broadcast that program. Pete, last few seconds before we go . I should have mentioned Buzz Aldrin is my greatuncle. He is not, but i wanted to say that. More importantly Marco Rubio on the 6o Minutes Segment said we should investigate this. Marco rubio just voted not to investigate January 6th but he wants to investigate ufos. Theres more truth ufos exist and we definitely know that January 6th happened. So i think it is really important to just mention the politics there and how ridiculous it is. But if we are riffing on the politics, i was talking in my hallway about this earlier. Prince william released a blistering response saying it fuelled her fear and paranoia. His brother, Prince Harry, said Princess Diana lost her Life Due to treatment from the press. He spoke about Mental Health on oprahs new series. How do i fix this . It is a case you need to go back to the past, go back to the point of trauma, deal with it, process it and move forward. Lets finish up with our panel, pete dominic, don callaway and Reena Shaw. Reena, let me start with you, the report into the interview and how it was obtained. What do you make of this . Well, i certainly am very sad to know that this was a deceitful practice that Martin Bashir engaged in. What a respected person that we had thought would never stoop to that kind of thing. What we know also through harry is that this led to dianas emotions really a woman in the public high. How can i put it . It is already hard enough, you are in The Public Eye with the monarchy, but to be putting in question your marriage, everything around you. I cant imagine the paranoia she must have felt and people should be held accountable. What we know through the Tabloid Fodder that led to our Societys Obsession with other peoples lives does cost some people their lives. It feels as if nobody has been held accountable. So on the one hand, look, im no fan on the monarchy. I do applaud harry though for really trying to preserve his family. He is looking after his own Family Unit in a way that demonstrates he understands the past could repeat itself. Right. If he left himself in a situation that would lead to perhaps other people with really low journalistic standards doing the very same thing. Let me zip through a few more questions before we are out of time. Don, Prince William said essentially that this interview should never see the light of day again. Watch. It is my firm view that this Panorama Program holds no legitimacy and should never be out again. It effectively established a false narrative which for over a quarter of a century has been commercialized by the bbc and others. In an era of fake news, public Service Broadcasting and a free press have never been more important. These failings identified by investigative journalists, not only let my mother down and my family down, they let the public down, too. Don, im not sure how i feel about that. On the one hand, allowing it to air again kind of perpetuates the wrong that was done. On the other hand, never airing it again in a way is almost like saying it never existed, like it never happened. What do you think . Well, if, in fact, the interview said or published some things that were false, then william has a very good point because at some point you have to stop the lies. At some point you have to stop spreading and giving life to the lies. But this is just a Case Study. Perhaps the largest ever in the history of the world, a Case Study on journalistic integrity. Not only should Martin Bashir be ashamed of himself but the bbc should really be ashamed of themselves and i think theres deep and substantial monetary liability here. I am not a big royal guy, but you have to have empathy for William And Harry because, you know, that cost them a whole lot. But if you have if you extract it to have the larger conversation about journalistic Integrity E Reena is absolutely right there are real lives and futures at stake here and his behavior is unacceptable, but he worked for a network that is equally accountable. What about that, Martin Bashir said he is still proud of the interview, and he said that he essentially precipitated the riff with the Royal Family and her subsequent death is unreasonable and unfair. He stinks. He is disgraced. His career is over. He is destroyed. When you were on my podcast, matter of fact, we talked about this, josh. We talked about how a journalist can destroy their career. You talked about plagiarism and making up sources. In this case Martin Bashir and the bbc, who also is disgraced, their biggest ever journalistic scoop was achieved because a reporter told Princess Diana a pack of lies. These two boys walked behind their dead Mothers Coffin in front of A Billion people while Elton John was singing candle in the wind. If it were any one of us, i would be a drunk living on the sidewalk in a trash back for the last ten years of My Life. It is hard to call out the Royal Family. But he is talking about carrying on the work his mother did, being honest about this. I would lastly quote a british columnist who wrote in the guardian, marina hyde. From diana to harry, damaged people do damaging things, but it is important to remember as far as the Royal Family is concerned that the public likes it so much better that way, Royal Pain sells a lot more than royal happiness. Well, reena, thats the other piece of this. I mean Prince Harry has been talking a lot about Mental Health, the trauma that he suffers from his mothers death. Here is another part of what he said. I was wanting to drink, i was willing to take drugs, i was willing to do the things that made me feel less like i was feeling. But i slowly became aware that, okay, i wasnt drinking monday to friday, but i would probably drink a weeks worth in one day, on a friday or a saturday night. I would find myself drinking not because i was enjoying it but because i was trying to mask something. Reena, he said that he doesnt believe anything about the way the Media Acts has changed since her death, including the treatment of his wife, meghan, the former dutchess of sussex. But with regards to just the Mental Health impact of this, i hope one of the positive pieces of this is that it evolves the way we talk about Mental Health, especially the way that how we treat other people affects their Mental Health. Thats right, josh. For me this is so close to home. This past year has been a nightmare for me, and im very open when i say that. I think women with young children who have been sort of captive at home and never knew that this was going to be our reality, were coming out of this forever changed. I am so ready for people to normalize having these conversations. I was born and raised on american soil, but also the daughter of two immigrants. In our communities, it is weak to admit that you are going through something. You are supposed to talk yourself through things, and we know that clinical depression is real, that people are struggling. In this society, we are not like other societies. We are we value our individual lives so much, and sometimes that means that we hide behind doors and we take to vices and people just dont know. So what we have to remember is that everybody is fighting their own battle. That cliche is definitely there, but it is more true now, because as we go out into the world to take a little bit from what pete quoted, hurt people hurt people. So lets put an end to it and destigmatize getting help and talk about access to Mental Health resources. Yeah. That needs to be so much more normalized, and im ready for that conversation as we move forward this year with lawmakers. Lawmakers need to acknowledge we need resources there. Perhaps it is a conversation we will continue with you another night. For now, it is good to see the three of you, thank you very much.
