My administration will continue to support Quiet Diplomacy to that end. We will make progress and im committed to working toward it. The secretary of State Blinken is expected to visit the Middle East. Writing in part, blinken will meet with leaders and work together to build better futures for israelis and palestines. No exact date was given for this trip. Kelly, good to see you. Bring us up to speed. What is the mood and is this ceasefire holding so far . It is holding so far. Israelis woke up to a quiet morning, a stop to the hostilities for the first time. You can see traffic is picking up again. People are heading for the beach. They are out for a sail on a beautiful early Summer Day here in gaza, the West Bank and East Jerusalem overnight. There were huge celebrations on the part of palestines at last all of those Air Strikes on gaza would be ending for a time. We went out to a town called laud. A mixed israeli and jewish neighborhood. We talked to people there about how they felt. Was it a relief to wake up to the hostilities stopping now. We talked to a jewish woman and a Palestine Man. The jewish woman essentially gave us a shoulder shrug, like, a ceasefire, and . The conflict has been going on for decades. The source of the Conflict Hasnt been resolved. So there is sort of a feeling, yes, the rockets and Air Raids have stopped but the problems are still there and it can spark up again at any time. Really is the sense on the ground. Kelly, weve talked about the type of town you mentioned where there are israelis and palestines living alongside each other. One focus is the israeli arabs and tensions between them and israeli jews. Is it still as thick and difficult as it was 11 days ago . The jewish woman we spoke to today lives next door to an arab family. She said she would want them to be neighbors of any close ones. They watch out for each other. The arab family takes care of her children. This is a good solid relationship. It still is. We spoke to a Palestine Man in the same town and said, yes, i love my jewish friends and they understand the tension but to say the Anger And Tension is gone and all of the memories of what has happened. Not just the Rocket Fire but the intracommunal violence in town and this place was the center of that. That shows the restraktibility of this problem and the longstanding issues. Even if you have arabs and jews living Side By side and seemingly cooperating, there are so many issues that need to be worked out. The arab or palestine gentleman we spoke to said, look, we are not equal citizens here. Until that is solved and we feel like there is a coexistence, these issues will always be there. We heard from President Biden last night. He promised to continue the strategy he says hes been employing so far. What is the sense from the White House about how the handling of this crisis went and whether they think this is going to have any sort of durability . I think this is the White House that concentrates on their strategy. They go their full force and dont change course. When we start asking questions, member of Congress Start asking questions. The socalled quiet Diplomacy And Phone calls between officials like Binden And Netanyahu and the palestine president. That was the theme they concentrated on and that it worked well. There was a ceasefire mostly brokered here by the egyptians. I think that will continue. They will continue to keep this Behind The Scenes and push other people in the region especially egypt, to do a lot of the heavy lift here. At the same time, the president said there is going to be u. S. Support for reconstruction efforts. Youll continue to see them stick to that strategy. They think that it worked here and the White House is always cognizant of any fighting of anyone publicly because of the four years of the trump administration. They dont think a lot of that worked. President biden certainly has a long view of this conflict, a Set Idea of how he would deal with it. Hes got that understanding of up and down with netanyahu. Eugene, stick with us please. On wednesday, house republicans unveiled a new 400 Billion proposal that would provide historic levels of funding for highways and bridges but it is far less for the plan put out. Eugene, i want to set aside the House Plan and focus on the senate. What are your sense of whether these negotiations remain real and tense. There is still a lot of fighting over how to pay for this. We had been seeing some optimism. That has been kind of waning in the last day or so on Capitol Hill. That is absolutely right. There has been more pessimism. I recommend last Week Feeling like i was losing it thinking there would be a bipartisan deal on these things and gotten into more pessimism. Democrats on Capitol Hill who are kind of getting bored and want to get something done. They think a lot of their republican colleagues are not going to reach the White House where they want them to be. Talking about the 568 Million in the senate bill. There is a meeting continue as that continues. The White House wants this to be an expansive bill and to concentrate on the hard infrastructure. They want to do more expansive things. It feels like they are leaving the care out of this first infrastructure bill. They want it to be as bipartisan as possible. People are getting ants. People in the White House, the house and the senate. They wanted to get something done in the summer. They have to get that through both the House And Senate here. What they are concerned about is that this is the democrats are going to take trump and beat them over the head with trump and January 6 for the rest of this year and all of 2022 and thats the issue they are going to run on and hit all the republicans on it. The only thing that could happen is something set up by pelosi or schumer. The republicans are going to say this is just democrats looking to score points. My theory is that as the legal problems surround him and grow, it is probably going to compel him to get back into politics for the reason that there is an inoculation that comes with being in office. Oh, great. It is true. As the president thought about himself as Above The Law and protected from lawsuits and perhaps it is some avenue of escape. He has told associates hes keen on running or interested in doing so. The other news is that he doesnt want to make a decision until after the 2022 midterms which is what you are talking about. A frozen Field Waiting to see what its Party Leader is going to do. Weve talked to a bunch of republican strategists over the past week who fear what will happen is that Trump Will Squash a generation of national public leaders or emerging talent. Weve already seen Nikki Haley say she wont enter the race if trump does. Rightly saying it is very difficult to dethrone him in the eyes of the republican voters. For a couple of years looks to see what trump does and then has to skram. Youve done some reporting about the financial piece of this. Historically raising a lot of money and establishing interest and struggled in a way democrats were succeeding to raise smaller online donations. That has changed. What are you seeing . What makes it unique is that it is so driven around one individual. The democratic digital fundraising that drives some of it. We looked at republican fundraising emails since January 6 to get another sense of how much The Party had embraced trump. Interesting thing, after January 6, The Party went completely dark. The first email that came back was acknowledge that trump lost the election which is Something Trump doesnt do. After that, the embrace just grew tighter and tighter. Over time since january 12, theyve sent 96 emails that mention Donald Trumps name. Far and above the most of an elected or nonelected officials. We are talking give aways, sign his birthday card, become a legacy member. It also gets to whatparty. But also gets to what youre pointing out, among all people in the gop tent, no one drives grassroots donations like he does, which explains a lot of why the republican party has continued to embrace him. Its not just that hes got this potential to make life miserable for them. Hes their cash cow. They need him. And in politics when increasingly youre operating off of smalldonors, thats critical for them. And most of them are probably who showed up for trump and who republicans feel they need. What does it say to you about the urgency around that issue that lawmakers that frankly cant seem to agree on what time it is that were able to get this through . Youre right, kasie. Its washington responding to something that people see and Care About in their real lives. And how rare is that . Right . Like, weve seen over the past year the scary stats, the scary coverage of violence against asians. All across the country. And now washington is actually acting on it. They can see them doing it. And this is a big part of the biden White House thinking. Right, kasie, is to focus on a couple of things. To rather than chasing every news cycle, to be content with not always leading the news, but delivering on a few things that people see, Care About, and frankly, that they can get credit for. The president had set a deadline of may 25th, the Oneyear Anniversary of george floyds death, as the time when he wanted a deal on Police Reform to have been passed. The negotiators on The Hill are still working on this. They had sort of said to the president , you know what, were good if you dont get involved here. Whats the thinking in the White House right now about how President Biden can best push or not on that set of negotiations and how optimistic are they that theyre actually going to get an outcome on that . Optimism on an outcome. And kasie, were seeing a Biden Strategy here. That letting congress lead, letting congress be the face of it, while the White House is working Behind The Scenes. And kasie, axios has new reporting about how little has changed in Police Departments in that year. I think the last summer, we thought that lots would change. But, in fact, a couple of things have happened. One is, were seeing that, Police Departments are having a terrible time recruiting. Its very difficult to get quality people into this very tough job. And second, were seeing that there hasnt been any dramatic change in the standards that Police Departments have. So kasie, i think youll hear a lot more, as we mark this horrible anniversary in our countrys history. I think youll hear a lot more about pressure on the national government, to have standards, that for training for police officers, one of the big things, teaching them to deescalate, rather than simply use force.
