They need the tienl to finish it. That seems to be the public there was a meeting between the Prime Minister and israeli security officials. The message then was basically we can finish the operation and we should finish the operation now. That seems to be the real message hamas saying a Cease Fire could happen in a day or two. That seems very realistic. In 2014, the last time there was such a hugeout break, there was a ceasefire and more fighting and that carried on six or seven times and the fighting continues for seven weeks all together. Yes, it looks like a ceasefire very soon but it may not be the end of the story there. So martin, this all of course started with rising tensions, escalation around some actions the israelis took and those evictions in east jerusalem. After watching this unfold, is there any signs or anything done that suggests that those kinds of conflicts are going to be resolved . What keeps this from flairing up again and again and again . Frankly, nothing. Thats what has been happening. This is the fifth round of fighting between Israel And Ham as in the last 15 years. The issue is peace between israel and the palestines. And israel says we have no one to talk to because hamas is sworn to the destruction of israel. The palestine position is aimed at persuading the world that israel is the aggressor and that they are the victim in gaza. I dont believe it is the whole story. Yes, this latest conflict was sparked by jerusalem. Where the Supreme Court is supposed to decide whether jewish settlers can take back homes from the palestines. I think we should underscore the fact that this was negotiated in a bipartisan way. A republican congressman was tasked by mccarthy to negotiate on behalf of republicans. He was kept appraised throughout this entire process. How do we get to this point, only to have suddenly republican leaders come out and say, you know what, never mind . It is also 35 republicans that voted for it after leadership came out against it and pretty much whipped their members not to vote for it. It included the 10 impeachment republicans but also 25 more. So it was a pretty stinging rebuke against the leadership on what needs to move forward here. Mccarthy has been trying to control the situation of the former president of January 6. We saw that with the booting of representative Liz Cheney from her leadership position. It has been very difficult. Hes been trying to silence the members who have concerns. It hasnt been very effective. Hes talking about a Big Tent republican party but really trying to shrink that tent to appease the former president. Lets talk about the senate, we said mcconnell said this and came down to the Flora Nounsing that he hadnt been undecided. The entire behind the Scenes Approach had been markedly different. Clearly in this case, hes bowing to political pressure who called him out by name and said, hey, stop this. Does this mean there will not be 10 republicans willing to support this and create the commission. They need 60 votes for it in the senate. Saying perhaps, the seven republicans who voted to impeach the president were behind this. Seeming quite opposed. Nothing would have been as broad as this January 6 Commission And Nothing would have been as in depth or had the funding to do it. This is a commission that is five and five on these situations. Whoever has party control, which is democrats, the republican picks the vice chairman. There is no sitting member of congress that is going to sit on the commission. It is modelled after the 911 commission. I think youll continue to see discussions. Another good reason to look at the filibuster. Why does it take 60 votes to get anything done in the united States Senate . I think you are going to see something happen because it has to happen because our democracy is too democracy is precious, the pillars are under fundamental attack and we have to do something, period. M. , editor in chief for axios. Nicholas johnston. Nick, good morning. Whats the one big Thing Today . The new big thing is pressure for business to save the world. Businesses are now the most trusted institutions on the globe, according to a new survey from the Edelman Trust barometer. This is a Trend Weve been following for a number of years and it seems the pandemic is creating a culmination of this change in trust among people, shifting from governments to big businesses. This started many years ago with the rise of populism in the united states and in europe, We Saw, lowering trust in government and hiring trust in business. And it seemed like the pandemic was the final nail in the coffin for governments when the difficulty in responding to the pandemic, botched closeouts and Mask Mandates and controversies over being able to respond to rising case loads. You measure that against what business did. People in surveys that we did at the start of the pandemic loved the way groceries and shippers and big companies responded. And of course, the Vaccine Rollout has been a success throughout the world, thanks a lot to these pharmaceutical companies. And i think that pushed a lot of people to say to shift from trusting government to do the right thing is now on business doing the right thing. Another key part here is the way employees look to their companies to do the right thing. Not just customers, but employees hold their companies in higher regard expecting them to do the right thing. So corporations will have to step out of their comfort zone. Have positions on political issues, because both employees and customers are expecting that of their company, because theyre not expecting it of their government, and i think thats what were seeing a lot lately, where companies are making very strong stances on things like Voting Rights and other political issues in the past. These companies hadnt done a lot of at all. Its a fraught time for corporate ceos as the world looks to them for leadership in light of falling trust in government. Its a pretty complicated question, especially when the incentives are franklily financial in the case of many of these corporations. Very interesting statistic. Youre also looking at whats going on with the Infrastructure Package negotiations. And specifically how the toughest piece of this is, how do you pay for it . What are you Guys Learning . New movement on The Hill reported by my colleague, hans nichols, talking about how to pay for this Infrastructure Package. Biden put a lot of tax increases into this one. A lot of increases on the rich and corporations. A new wrinkle is that increased funding for the irs could be an approach to raise some of the taxes to close some of this gap between whats being spent and what kind of revenue is coming in. The scald tax gap. The amount of taxes that the irs fails to raise that it is owed because it doesnt have the resources to go and audit people or track down loopholes. There are some projections that an 80 Billion investment in the Irs Staffing to chase after this could bring back ten times that. 800 Billion or even a trillion over some estimates, to really begin to fund some of these proposals. Republicans have said they would be open to that. We spoke to Shelly Moore Capito in west virginia. Conservative groups catch wind of this. So still fighting, but a little bit of a close in the gap between what kind of money might be raised. I mean, thats my question. Has Shelly Moore Capito spoken with, say, Senator Ted Cruz or Josh Hawley who we were hearing republicans not that long ago saying, abolish the irs entirely. Youre certainly not going to get all the republicans. I dont think Ted Cruz will get onboard with anything that Joe Biden but you only need a handful with the filibuster. And democrats are looking for any kind of movement. Joe biden brought a bunch of democrats up to the White House. Democrats for now are looking for anything to get a handful of democrats on to this bill republicans, excuse me, on to this bill to get it through the senate in a bipartisan way. And as we head into this day, i just want to take a moment to again weve done this before, but i think its important not to forget, the Law Enforcement and Capitol Police officers that put their lives on the line, many of them are still healing. One lost a finger, one lost an eye. We lost Capitol Police officer brian sicknick. A group of them pleaded with the lawmakers that they serve, that they put their lives on the line for to not downplay what happened on January 6th, to investigate it. And right now, this morning, it looks like republicans are going to prevent that from happening.
