The scientists and researchers. The drug companies. The national guard. The u. S. Military. Fema. The nations governors, doctors, nurses, pharmacists. Everyone whos moved Heaven And Earth to get as many shots into the arms of americans as possible and its been an all Hands On Deck for the country effort. Some people said we cant do this. That it would not be until the fall that we had this many people vaccinated. That 2021 might be a lost year for our country as 2020 was. But we proved the doubters wrong. I need to single out one more group to praise. The american people. The american people. For more than a year, you have endured so much and so many lost jobs, so many businesses lost, so many lives upended and so many months that our Kids Couldnt be in school. You couldnt see your friends or family. All the moments that mattered so much from birthdays to weddings to graduations all postponed. And most tragically of all the lost lives. As the press knows i carry a card in my pocket with the Number of lives lost to covid as of the close of business yesterday. 580,073 lost lives. So many empty chairs. So many times a husband or a wife lean over to touch their spouse and not there. Moms and dads, sons and daughters, cyst is, brothers, aunts, grapd parents, neighbors, coworkers. Having been there in other circumstances, i know its of little solace right now but i promise the day will come when the memory of the Loved One you lost will bring a smile to your lips before it brings a tear to your eyes. Thats when you know youre going to get through it. You will get through it but its a long haul. You have endured all this. When your country asked you to get vaccinated, you did. And the american people stepped up. You did what i consider to be a patriotic duty. Thats how we have gotten to this day. As president , i can say im pleased but im sure the Vice President agrees with me. We are not surprised. Pleased but not surprised. Because the simple truth is this. The american people have never, ever, ever, ever let their country down. Never. This country is proving what we have known, what we have all known for so long. Theres nothing we are unable to do when we put our minds, our hearts and our souls into it and we do it together. No. I want to be clear about what the cdc is saying. What the cdc is not saying. The cdc is saying that they have concluded that fully vaccinated people are at a very, very low risk of getting covid19. Therefore, if youve been fully vaccinated you no longer need to wear a mask. Let me repeat. If you are fully vaccinated, you no longer need to wear a mask. But if youve not been vaccinated, or if youre getting a two Shot Vaccine and you eve gotten only had the first shot but not your second or you havent waited the full two weeks after the second shot, you still need to wear a mask. Look. We have gotten this far. Please protect yourself. Until you get to the Finish Line because as great as this announcement is today, we dont want to let up. We all know how the you have this virus has been. The safest thing for the country is for everyone to get vaccinated. And getting vaccinated is easier than ever. We have worked so hard. It is momentous and a wise decision by the cdc to put out the science saying the vaccines keep you out of the hospital away from people like me and also great at stopping transmission. Dr. Walensky illuminated the vaccine studies on transmission, gosh, 80 to 90 reduction in Transmission Rates meaning vaccinated you cant unwittingly pass on the vaccine to others not vaccinated and thats huge. I think the devils in the details because theres one thing for the cdc to say this and the president to amplify this and another to see how its operationalized. What does this mean for schools and society . Do Employers Track who get it is vaccine . Is there a magic Number of in an indoor Business Environment you dont Need Testing . You dont need masking for anybody and not checking the Vaccination Status . Right now the guidance exists there but in terms of operationalizing it in a safe for businesses need concrete plans so they know what to do and not to do and this provides momentum for man dates across certain segments in society like universities and the u. About optimism and you see reflected in the right track, wrong track where 54 of americans think the country is on the right track. How central is it for this white House And President to project optimism . President biden went off prompter twice from what i could see. I could see his screen and one moment it was a powerful indication of grief and never been i think an american Public Figure who speaks so eloquently about personal loss informed by the tragedy in his own life and connects with people and understands what theyre going through and second part is exactly that. Hour at Fox News but it is hard sometimes and that in particular is really difficult to listen to. Were still fighting it. And this is where, for example, thinking about politics here for a second. Thinking of Governor Dewine in ohio was striking that here we do the inincentives to get the vaccine and i hope that it is not repeated across the country because i think its sending the wrong message. We try to contend with it with mist busting and ironically the followers of the former president are most afliktded by the myths and theres residual impact and lastly i think we are at a moment here where we can take advantage of the new cdc guidance. This is a moment where we can use industry or we can use the carrot of traveling safely to get to that 70 mark but we have to make tough decisions. Donny, i want to ask you to sort of wear your hat of a career spent trying to persuade people. I wonder if you think that reminding people that no children under 12 have been vaccinated and if you need a reason to do whatever it is the cdc recommends either still wear a mask on the airplane or get vaccinated if you havent yet should we be talking about protecting the kids that couldnt be vaccinated if they wanted to be . What do you think about motivating and persuading people to take the shot and using the fact that no child under 12 could be vaccinated because it is not authorized yet for them . Im confused with the question as far as how do i feel about looking at how do you persuade i think the White House is focused on getting the rest of the adults, everyone 12 and older all they have to work with and all you can vaccinate. Nobody under 12. How do you persuade the rest of them . Theres great reporting on the people that just dont have it is not that they dont have the ten minutes to shot but the day off if they feel crummy after the second one. What is the message this President Should deliver to that group . I think that im going to come back to the last answer is that you cant give them anymore logic. There was no insurrection and to call it an insurrection in my opinion is a bald faced lie. Warming the Tv Footage of that entered the capitol and walked Think Statuary Hall showed people between the Stan Chons and ropes taking videos and ropes why if you didnt know the footage was from January 6 you would think that it was a normal Tourist Visit. Let us count the ways we can fact check this again today. Yesterday we ran it alongside the Video Disproving just about everything that came out of his Mouth But Today clyde admitting the Tourist Visit unfolding he was helping to barricade the chamber from said normal tourists. As one of the members that stayed in the capitol and on the House Floor, who with other republican colleagues helped barricade the door until almost 3 00 p. M. That day from the mob that tried to enter i can tell you the House Floor was never breached ian it was not an insurrection. So to be clear, most lawmakers do not barricade the chamber to protect against normal tourists though they might have successfully held Aucht Mob in the house the Senate Floor was swarmed by rioters including one man carrying Zip Ties and charged in connection with the events and in case theres any doubt about the brutality and atrocities of that day new video surfaced showing the moment of a brutal attack on Capitol Police Officer Michael during the riot. Joining us is congressman of swalwell of california and Matthew Dowd political strategist and, congressman, you were trying to help him get a meeting with Kevin Mccarthy and you have got 107 of your fellow lawmakers who have signed on to this letter and i want to read a little from the letter. For weeks the officer requested to speak with you. During national Police Week he called the office to request a meeting and was hung up on. The officer is unable to speak with you or schedule a meeting. We request that you hohn author and support the request to meet with you about Police Officers on the ground experiences, injuries and ongoing offering from the defense of the u. S. Capitol January 6. Why wont Kevin Mccarthy meet with the officer . What is your understanding of the fact there is . He should. He should hear what experienced. It is so hard to watch that footage and you Cant Unhear an officer pleading, playing the last card that he felt that he had. I have kids. Hoping that he would resonate with somebody and they would let up on him and thank god he survived but i took him to meet Speaker Pelosi months ago and every day seeing more and more Insurrection Deniers in congress and talking to the officer it fires him up on behalf of the other officers there. He wants to go through the footage to tell him what he experienced and hope that mccarthy would tell the colleagues like clyde that this was an insurrection and consequences for people that fed the Big Lie and the consequences were the injured and dead officers. Oh by the way, it is Police Week. If you Cant Meet with me this week would you think to meet with me . Congressman mccarthy said he in a date and uncertain time will meet but you said something is scheduled and i want to though focus on something you said. We dont make a decision lightly to show an Officers Moment where he is literally in his view and said this in other interviews pleading for his life and a human beings last card is im a parent, a mom, a dad. Why do you think Insurrection Trutherism has the gop in such a i dont know The Word but whipped up into another delusion . Remember that over ten of them voted against giving Officer Fanone and Capitol Hill Police officers the congressional Gold Medal objecting to the use of The Word insurrection. Im asking for mccarthy to sit down with the officer and coming with no political agenda and doesnt give a Rip Ant politics. He comes just like i come from a trump republican family. So his bias is not in favor of democrats at all. He jams me up all the time about stuff that democrats say and i can take it so mccarthy can listen to what he experienced. Tell us what we should know about mr. Andrew clyde. Whos standing by his Comments Yesterday that footage of the insurrection looks like any other day of tourists at the capitol. Its just false. I dont know what other tours Andrew Clyde has been at the capitol. I was a Tour Guide as an intern. Theyre not bloody and violent. They dont include weapons or beatings and Spitding On Police Officers or terrorizing Members Of Congress. It is just to feed this Big Lie and to deny what happened. I want to point out Paul Gosart said that Ashley Babbitt was executed. She was leading the mob that was about to storm the House Floor and she was shot by a brave officer who was the last line of defense for many Members Of Congress and the slowest, least mobile members having the hardest time getting out. If they were overrun by that mob people would have been killed so to call that officer an Executioner Dehumanizes and delegitimatizes the role and endangers other officers. What do you think it says about Kevin Mccarthy that he saw i saw those Comments Yesterday, as well, and mr. Clyde, no comments today, no rebuke, no lets tone it down on the lies about the Insurrection And Liz cheney stripped of the leadership post. It says that Cheney And Kinzinger operate with a Core Set of principles. Both of them voted very auburn with Donald Trump and cheney is replaced by someone that didnt really vote with Donald Trump and not a party of principles anymore. It is a leader in mccarthy seeking power for Powers Sake and says more about the courage of Cheney And Kinzinger than mccarthy but he can be a leader right now. Meet with Officer Fanone. Tell your caucus to strom denying The Truth and create a commission to understand how to not let this happen at the capitol again. I think part of the problem is that they represent a constituency in the country that actually supports what happened on January 6 and many of those people in congress, republicans, were fine with what happened on January 6. And i think the problem is the acceptance by a segment of our country to a complete ends justify the means approach. As long as you retain power or get power, it doesnt matter what means you use, and its exceedingly troubling in this moment of the shortterm. I think were okay in the longterm. Im troubled in the shortterm, because what binds us together as americans isnt a government and isnt the constitution and isnt the declaration of independence. It is a shared sense of values. And those values are honesty, ethics, integrity, you know, respect for others, and if we are at a point where there is a segment of the country which is now the majority of the republican party, that says basically, those dont matter. The only thing that matters is power. And we can do anything in service of power. And if their voters dont hold them accountable, the only way we can fix this problem in the shortterm i think in the longterm, as ive said, the countrys becoming more diverse and growing and its going to fix it in the longterm but in the shortterm, were faced with, they are not going to be held accountable in their republican primaries, Donald Trump and his minions and those republicans. They have to be held accountable in a general election in this country, and so, again, ive said this before. Its incumbent upon all of us. Its incumbent upon you and nick to shine a huge bright light on whats going on, but in The End, the fix for this ends justify the Means Problem is voters are going to have to say, enough is enough, and its going to be voters in a general election because republican voters seem totally fine with abandoning ethics and Integrity And Honesty in service of whatever power they can get. You know, when you look at having to win by using disinformation or you look at the things that are being said, whether its Ron Johnson talking about vaccines, whether its tucker carlson, you know, talking about the fact that somehow the government wanted Gas Stations to be shut down, i find it ludicrous. We cant even have a Policy Discussion because individuals want to go on these rants based on really based on disinformation but a particular type of grift where a lot of these individuals are making money off being this type of using this type of hyperbolic language. For example, when you saw the leader goes and says, hey, he wants to do an Infrastructure Deal with the president and then he tweets that out, that is just sort of the political way of doing business right now for fundraising or to get people mobilized behind you and thats why i think some people find it so distasteful because i can sit here with Charlie And Everybody on the panel and we can have a discussion about Climate Change. We can have a discussion about the pipeline. We can have a Policy Discussion, what i agree or disagree with, say, on the colonial pipeline hack, why did they pay off the guys, we can have this cyber discussion but how do we do that when we have people that are screaming into popcorn boxes about the government wanting Gas Stations shut down or why this push for vaccines when we know that vaccines work, and im sorry if i sound frustrated sometimes, nicole. Its just ridiculous that, you know, we dont want conservatism to equal crazy, and it shouldnt. We should have two viable parties but right now its difficult to have a discussion on any Policy Matter when you have this crazy being spouted all the time. Whats your Breaking Point . I dont think that it can come back, and i think we i disagree with just one thing. We cant have a debate about Climate Change because that has to be rooted in a shared set of facts. And i looked really hard today to see if there was any place where we could have where the country could have a debate between two policy arguments. I couldnt find any. The Voter Restrictions are not rooted there any fact. There is no fact of voter fraud. The fight against the Vaccine Safety is not rooted in any fact. These are some of the most tested vaccines that we have had, and the tests have taken place in the midst of a crisis while were all watching. Can you fix it From The Inside or do you have to fix it from the outside . But when you think you can fix it From The Inside and i see it getting worse and metastasizing and people still trying to make money off this, i get frustrated and discouraged. Now, all the dealers are out freelancing, vying with one another for who can sell the most potent stuff on the street. Election lies, searching for Baa Bamboo on ballots, Rants About Fauci and china. I mean, you kind of arrived at the same place i did today when i was thinking about this. I mean, the only thread that runs through it all is that its all b. S. Well, and this is the addiction to outrage and the addiction to disinformation. So, you know, its it is outrageous to watch the retconing, the revisionist history about the election but think about all the practice the republican party has had of revising history, the history of trump and russia, about his racism, about all of the different things, about his corruption. But i think what youre seeing now, and this is why, look, i support what my good Friend Denver is doing with this statement from american renewal, but it does feel like its Tilting At Windmills because how many signals do we have to have that the republican party is not going to heal itself . That Vote Yesterday about Liz Cheney basically said, guys like denver and me, we dont belong in the republican party unless you are willing to lie, unless you are willing to whitewash January 6th. So, i think its important to have this space for people who have been driven out, but the notion that somehow the republican party is going to heal itself when theyre in the process of, as i wrote, vying with one another, who can put the most potent crack out on the street, the most potent disinformation, and its like a there is a competition between the Josh Hawleys and the Ted Cruzes and the Marjorie Taylor greenes to come up with the more the bigger outrage. How do you make people feel victimized . How do you make them feel angry . Even when things are good, they have to push this because this is the entire model, and i dont see how the republican party is going to come back unless somebody shuts down the Meth Lab and makes them go Cold Turkey on the crazy. I mean, every word that you say lands like a body blow. I mean, as anyone thats ever worked in republican politics, which you just said, charlie, is the cold, hard truth. Efforts to fix it from inside have not only not worked, theyve been bashed. Some of the most vitriolic attacks, and im sure, congressman, youve been on the Receiving End of these, but some of the most vitriolic attacks from trump world, they save them for the republicans, not the democrats. So, i want to let you respond, congressman, to charlies attack that youre Tilting At Windmills. I dont know if if charlies attacking me, my gosh, im in trouble. But i think im with you. Listen, i got to have some hope, right, that we have a Pied Piper of disinformation that took people out into the wilderness and we had a lot of people that are culpable from committees at the grassroots level all the way up through every portion of leadership and every section of the party that just refused to talk about truth and facts, and yeah, obviously, im tilting towards independence. Charlie and i have had some incredible discussions on this, and my background in disinformation and what i have tried to do, but i still have hope that, you know, i hope that we have some people out there that havent completely bought in on sort of the apocalyptic nature of the good against evil argument in the republican party and if i can use blunt force facts and say, im willing to take the abuse, and you know, it started for me after the Samesex Wedding when i was accused of being funded by George Soros to training the Sexual Orientation of children. That was in late 2019. So, i have taken death threats. I have lost family and friends. But im hoping that we can bring conservatism back from the brink of crazy, but if you saw in our principal statement, and charlie makes such great points, in our principal statement, we did say if we Cant Fix it From The Inside, were going to have to do something from the outside, but at this point, i do feel like im swinging at the wind a little bit. But im hoping that people see that im not afraid to take it on the chin for the good of the american experiment, but also my oath in the constitution as a Military Man and congressman, im just trying the best i can, and i wish i had a better answer, nicole, and charlie, dang, you know, i get it. I just hope that at some point i can get through. So, errin, i think this all comes to land in a growing tent for one party and a shriveling one for the other. I mean, major shrinkage in Donald Trumps sort of wreckage of what the republican party once was. I wonder if you think that the nail in sort of a Coffin Kind of case to make is the disenfranchisement of voters. And Joy Reid made this point most eloquently out of all the days we spent talking about Liz Cheney. She believed in democracy so much that some of her most controversial positions, as far as folks, really, across the spectrum now, were her belief that democracy was worth exporting using our military to places like iraq and afghanistan. But if you believe in democracy, how on earth can you be a republican . You would think that was a bipartisan issue especially with so many republicans cloaking themselves in the constitution or at least that was kind of what it used to mean to be a republican, you know, championing our founding ideals, democracy, obviously, being at the center of that. But look, you know, one thing i would point out at this point, it took a while for us to get to this point as a country, as a democracy, right . It took this has been a long time coming for the republican party, and so, you know, the idea that it would be undone in five months, even with everything that we have seen and a very tumultuous few months after this election, you would think, yes, that people might be ready to kind of jettison the big Lie And Disinformation and it took us a while to get here and it may take a while to undo that. I put that out that for folks that are exasperated and frustrated. But to your point, nicole, look, once upon a time, there was room under the Big Tent for people like Liz Cheney and elise stefanik. But after the events of January 6th and after the Big Lie, there seem to be room for only one of those people and that was not congresswoman Liz Cheney, who, you know, is continuing to push back against the Big Lie. And i think that it is important for us to remember, the Big Lie, while it didnt work out for President Trump, right, he is out of office, it did land its target in other ways, and to that new york times article, continuing to sow Chaos And Doubt and uncertainty around our election process, giving republicans at the State Level the ammunition that they need to pass these laws and in complete absence of the need to protect Election Integrity, so the Big Lie was effective, if not effective in getting President Trump electsed, and it continues to be effective. But you know, you talk i hear Charlie And Denver talking about there not being room in the party for men like them. I mean, guess what, where do republican Women Factor into this is definitely part of that conversation. I wrote at the beginning of this year that, you know, this ongoing kind of Battle For The Soul Of America was going to have women on the front lines of it, and while i think we thought that some of that was going to include a battle within the democratic party, with folks like the squad and more traditional members of the republican i mean, democratic party, what were seeing is republican women really battling it out and having so you had a Number'>Record Number of republican women elected to this congress, and yet we are seeing some of the more prominent members of the republican wing of congress not only towing the Party Line around the Big Lie but also, you know, pledging to maintain the status quo, which, at this point, seems to be trumpism and so we are currently, for the foreseeable future, in the upside down where the person who is out of power is still wielding power and people who are still in power are being stripped of their power. Errin, would it be helpful if Liz Cheney joined the efforts . I mean, shes against the Big Lie to the degree that it threatens democracy. She believes that the Big Lie is part of Donald Trumps, quote, crusade against democracy. As you said, the most damage that the Big Lie is doing is in 47 State Legislatures where close to 400 pieces of legislation are being rammed through. Would her support for voting Rights Legislation help the cause . You know, you knew where i was going with this next, nicole, because absolutely. If Liz Cheney will we now see Liz Cheney continue, now that she is out of house leadership, does she use her platform . We know that she is going to continue to be outspoken and vocal about the Big Lie not being real, but how, then, can she pivot to support for voting rights, for the enfranchisement of voters, because the Big Lie was about the disenfranchisement of voters, right . So, if she believes in the enfranchisement of voters, if she believes in this democracy, how then does she fit into this conversation about, you know, Voter Protection and not Election Integrity . Speaker Pelosi Today also pointing to the rhetoric from the gop and in particular comments by a Protrump Congressman that the Capitol Attack looked like a, quote, normal Tourist Visit is the reason why a commission is so important. I dont know, on a normal day around here, when people are threatening to hang the Vice President of the united states or shoot the speaker in the forehead or disrupt and injure so many Police Officers. Well, nicole, the motivation is very simple, and that is there are some people in this town who have no shame and they will do anything they need to do, anything, and say anything they need to do to get power, to, you know, expand their majority, to win elections and to support Donald Trump. Thats the bottom line. And it doesnt mean, whether it means, you know, degrading the sacrifice of officers who lost their lives or fingers or eyes or were brutally beaten and still have traumatic Brain Injuries to this day or whitewashing history. Theres nothing that they wont do. So now we have to make sure they dont do that, that we preserve history and actually tell The Truth and dont allow those lies to be furthered but even more than that, we have a domestic violent Extremism Movement in this country that is growing and we have to make sure that we are being realistic and serious about what happened so that our country can deal with it. To that end, i mean, im sure that talking about the events of the day is not at the top of your list of things that you like to do, but youve shared this, and i want to read some of it to our viewers, in rolling stone. I called my wife and told her i loved her. One Congressmans Story from inside a capitol under attack. I saw the Capitol Police on the floor, started taking furniture and stacking it and barricading it against the door. I knew we were in big trouble, potentially. I called my wife, i told her i loved her and told the kids i loved them and told my wife i might have to fight my way out. We heard the banging on the doors. The mob had reached the doors. They were trying to ram down the House Floor doors. We heard gunshots breaking out, Flash Bang grenades going off. I was certain at that point we would have to fight our way out, so i was resolved to do that. It was horrifying. Ive seen riots before. Ive witnessed riots when i was in the military in iraq and afghanistan. I know what mobs and riots are capable of. This is the first time in 15 years i was truly afraid for my Life And Safety in this way. We all Saw Footage from the capitol as part of Donald Trumps impeachment trial, and there was no disparity with how fast i mean, republicans didnt run slower than democrats. Everybody responded the same way. Everybody ran. Everybody locked themselves in offices. Everyone was barricaded inside. Where does the sort of infection of one Partys Response come from . As you said, it is tied to, it is connected to a threat to the country of domestic violent extremism, people who believe in the Big Lie that incited the riot. Why have you tried sort of off camera talking to your republican colleagues . What is their excuse for not wanting to be part of the solution against something that was responded to by democratic and republican lawmakers in the same way on the 6th . Well, theres no simple answer to that. I think, you know, there are different groups of people with different motivations, and not all of my colleagues are the same. You know, there are a handful of people that are depraved and dont belong here. There are people that i consider friends, that i work with and work really well with and do really important things for the country to this day with rs behind their names and theres a lot of people in between. So i think we have to make sure that were holding people to a high standard, that were not turning our back on this, were not whitewashing whats happening, and we just continue to tell The Truth. And you know, this isnt an exercise in the integrity of history, although that is important. This is really about telling The Truth so we can move forward as a country, so we can heal as a country, and we can address the Extremist Movement that we have thats growing that is a danger to the country. What I Cant Wrap my brain around, though, is you have someone like Kevin Mccarthy, who literally the night after the insurrection, the after the chamber of the u. S. House was barricaded against a riotous mob stood up and gave a speech and called me out by name and led to a standing ovation saying, me and others helped hold the line and made sure the Chamber Wasnt taken. Then you fast forward a couple months, and its not a big deal. So, you just Cant Circle or you Cant Square that up. Somethings going on here, and the simple explanation is that they just want to win elections and theyre willing to do anything to do that. I want to ask you what its like up there, and i want to ask you about something that the Washington Post reported about Marjorie Taylor greene. Post writes that she aggressively confronted congresswoman alexandria ocasiocortez, causing the new York Congresswoman to raise security concerns. Do you feel safe . Should she feel safe . What is the tension like up there . Theres certainly a lot of tension but the vast majority of my colleagues, democrats and President Biden, what were doing is trying to rebuild the country, were trying to invest in roads and bridges, were trying to put millions of people to work. Were trying to recover from a pandemic, and we are doing that work. We passed the american rescue plan, and were going to try very hard to pass the american jobs plan. So, i spend very little time giving Marjorie Taylor greene free space in my brain, but when i do, its because we have to set the record straight. We cant let terrible and egregious things go unchecked because, you know, when you let something go unchecked, it can grow so i will push back when i feel like i need to but we have important work to do and were going to continue to do it. Last night saw more Violence And Loss of life in the decadeslong israelipalestinian conflict. It is the worst flareup of violence in seven years. So far this week, israel has launched hundreds of air strikes, and palestinian militants have fired hundreds of missiles. More than 80 palestinians, including 18 children, are dead, and at least 7 israelis are dead, including one child. Now, making matters even worse on the streets, violent unrest between residents of mixed arabisraeli towns. Joining us now, new york times diplomatic correspondent Michael Crowley and robert gibbs, former obama white House Secretary and msnbc contributor. Michael crowley, you have a great piece on this president , whos been dealing with these issues for decades now, is viewing this at this point. You write, President Biden took office with little interest in pursuing an israelipalestinian Peace Agreement for understandable reasons. Predecessors in both parties had failed in their attempts. Bill clinton hosted an israelipalestinian summit during his first year in office. Barack obama appointed a middle East Envoy on his second full day. Donald trump vowed even before being inaugurated to secure a Peace Deal that No One Else has managed to get. George w. Bush took up the cause later in his presidency, also facing frustration. You also go that you quote martin, who says the problem with the Middle East is that you can try to turn your back on it but it wont turn its back on you, so here we are. How are they approaching this . Right. So, you know, President Biden has made very clear that he is focused when it comes to Foreign Policy on china foremost, also russian aggression and efforts to destabilize western democracies, wants to restore american multilateralism, alliances with europe. The Middle East is just not high on his list, apart from getting back into this nuclear deal with iran, which is a notable exception, and in particular, i think he feels like its a Tar Pit to try to negotiate an israelipalestinian Peace Agreement, which not only have several President S failed to do that, but the trump years, which we can talk in more detail about, left the two sides farther apart, virtually all analysts agree, than they have been in decades. Didnt want to invest a lot of bandwidth and political capital, but you know, now, he really has no choice but to confront this. But even now, although the White House is engaging, the State Department has an official over to the region. You know, you hear President Biden twice in the last couple days, hes used The Word, hope. He said he hopes that things are going to deescalate. They are really looking for this to calm itself down on its own and not command a lot more highlevel intervention by the biden administration. He just does not want to get pulled back into something like this, so theyre working it kind of quietly behind the scenes and again, theres a hope. Biden also says expectation, but i think its more hope than expectation right now that the two sides will calm down and the u. S. Will not have to get more deeply involved. Robert gibbs, let me play some of what Michael Crowley is talking about. This is the President Today when asked if prime Minister Netanyahu is doing enough to stop the violence. My intelligence community, the defense department, as well as the State Department, have been in contact with all of their counterparts in not only israel but in the region. And one of the things that i have seen thus far is that there has not been a significant overreaction. Robert gibbs, i think that no one understands, and you and i both have been in this position, and Michael Crowleys covered it, a President S words are no more carefully scrutinized and measured than when hes speaking of this conflict. Talk about what this White House is dealing with and how you think theyre doing. Well, i thought the exact same thing you just said as i watched that video. You can tell how carefully President Biden is trying to answer this question, because much to what michael said and has written, he understands the challenges for longterm durable peace but i also think he understands the real challenges in the shortterm. Youre dealing with a very volatile region. Youre dealing with a situation that involves hamas. Youve got a lot of other things on the front burner, domestically, politically, in Foreign Policy and the trepidation is not to get, as michael said, a lot of bandwidth involved, particularly at a president ial level, unless you think something can come of it. So, i think its an enormous challenge, and i think theyre trying to manage it without sort of getting sucked into it, becoming the only thing that that building is working on. And Michael Crowley, you alluded to it. Let me ask you to go there. They inherited a situation where, as you said, both sides are farther apart than, really, i dont know when the last time that was the case. You know, possibly not since before the Bill Clinton presidency. You know, as i mentioned in the article and you put it on the screen, in his first year in office, Bill Clinton had the palestinian and israeli leader to the South Lawn for a ceremony that really marked one of the higher points of the peace process, a moment of great optimism, and it you know, the Twostate Solution just has not come to fruition as many people had hoped and planned, and what you saw during four years of the Trump Administration was america moving from, you know, something of an impartial mediator, there are people who say we were never truly impartial, but to this dramatically explicitly proisrael posture, cutting off funding to the palestinians, cutting off contact with the palestinians, and presenting a Peace Plan that was, you know, very slanted in favor of what israel wanted and which the palestinians declared basically dead on arrival. And you know, what you hear privately from some people in this administration is that they inherited a terrible hand when it comes to this already terrible conflict, that the palestinians have just been boiling over with frustration and that sooner or later, you are going to have a crisis like this because of palestinian Frustration And Hopelessness combined with increasingly aggressive actions by the netanyahu government that were like Settlement Building and territorial claims that were making peace less and less plausible. Robert gibbs, you had the sort of window that none of us have had. You saw the now president as Vice President advising your old boss, president obama, on these issues. What can you tell us about how he sees the conflict . Well, again, i think a lot of what michael says is true. I mean, i think its understanding the challenges in the region, you know, both as Vice President but also as the chair of the senate foreign relations committee. I mean, hes watched this happen for a really long period of time, and he understands that both sides, quite frankly, are unwilling and unable to make the concessions that would be necessary for something in the longterm. I do wonder if the last few days dont accelerate the president reaching out to and reconnecting with the palestinians, speaking directly with the president or whether it accelerates, we know this is coming, an ambassador probably soon to israel, does this accelerate that or does it push the timetable for trying to get that person not just nominated by confirmed and over into the region and more active in this process. So, i think he understands the pressure. I think he understands the give and Take Thats necessary, and he understands once you get deeply involved in this, it takes a lot of energy and a lot of bandwidth. No, i think that Bandwidth Point is so right. It really does then sort of work outward from deputies all the way up to principals but it is an unbelievably tragic situation going on there. The one considered most serious is the investigation surrounding his finances and business dealings being conducted by the Manhattan District Attorneys Office. Cy vance could indict trump while hes at maralago, according to two Highranking County officials involved in planning sessions. Among the topics discussed in those meetings, how to handle the thorny extradition issues that could arise if an indictment moves forward. Lets bring into our Conversation Andrew weissmann, former fbi general Counsel And Msnbc legal analyst and tim obrien, bloomberg opinion senior analyst. My brain went to a cartoonlike image of Desantis Smuggling blondheaded Donald Trump out of maralago but what does this mean, practically speaking, Andrew Weissmann . Well, it actually could get quite complicated, nicole, because there is a florida statute, many states have similar ones, that impose a duty on the governor to extradite. However, that statute doesnt require the government sorry, the governor to extradite, and it also does provide that the governor has the ability to investigate the extradition papers, which is a long way to say that if desantis wants to and trump wants to delay this, there might be ways to do that. However, florida would act at its peril because one of the things that florida wants is it wants to have its own extradition papers adhered to when they are seeking fugitives around the country to be extradited back to florida for prosecution, so if they were to sort of play games with this, other states could, you know, retaliate. I mean, look, i dont have any of the legal expertise, by my political antenna has been watching desantis and if he wont protect floridians from covid, theres no way hes going to turn over Donald Trump to the manhattan d. A. I wonder if you can speak to what that means for Donald Trump. Does he have to stay in Florida And Risk being arrested if he leaves the state . Absolutely. So, this happens all the time in foreign countries where essentially you have people who are sort of imprisoned in a country. Here, Donald Trump would be imprisoned in florida. If he went overseas, if he went to any other state, he would be subject to those laws, and so he would really have to stay in florida. It certainly would be quite an interesting issue if he were to, for instance, this is way down the he would not be inhabiting the White House in that situation because there would be papers seeking his extradition to new york. That is an unbelievable state of affairs that, again, it would be funny if it didnt just reek of such dirty business. I want to stay on this Investigation And Turn to you on the reporting about allen weisselberg. I think this is the daughterinlaw. The Wall Street journal is reporting she told the manhattan prosecutors that she and her husband understand it to be part of the compensation package. The Manhattan District Attorneys Office would be examining whether they evaded taxes with a tuition payment arrangement. My question to you is if were down to examining an exdaughterinlaw and the sons finances, where the tuition came from, the following the money appears extremely mature, extremely advanced. What is your sense of where that investigation is right now . Well, i do think it is very advanced. And its a multifaceted financial fraud investigation. I think it includes Tax Fraud, accounting fraud and a Number of other illegalities. You know, the compensating for tuition and not reporting it to the irs, compensating for free apartments and not reporting it to the irs, thats Tax Fraud and probably among the minor things that i think they could possibly get trump for. And i think it shows you know, if there is an indictment of Donald Trump, they can serve those papers on him wherever he is. I think it will be you know, it is extraordinary that were talking about extradition because andrew can speak to that process more directly than i can. But i think they can get an indictment to him wherever he is and i dont think theyre going to serve him with an indictment unless they believe they have a bulletproof case. The Manhattan District attorney is not going to go forward with this epic indictment of a former president without believing its bulletproof. The fact that its gone this far down the tree that theyre shaking Weisselberg Family members is a very strong indicator of how hard core they are about this. I think if it gets to the point of an extradition, it means they are seeking to arrest him and hes resisting arrest and then it will become a carnival undoubtedly and tragic comic as everything is surrounding trump because i dont think hell have any hesitation to try to encourage his supporters to surround maralago to keep the police at bay. Most white collar criminals try to find a way to give themselves out of the public eye. I dont expect Donald Trump to do that. I also think that its amazing if that happens that trump would believe that anyone locally would want to support him because he is broadly low to manhattan where he once resided. He is broadly loathed in Bed Minister and hes broadly loathed in Palm Beach so he will have to recruit people to run body blocks for him if that happens. It is such an unbelievable sort of debasement of the office of the presidency. But i just want to follow up with you, andrew, on something tim obrian said. The subpoena is beyond allen Weisselbergs Exdaughterinlaw and son. They subpoenaed a manhattan private school as they seek the cooperation of the Trump Organization, cfo and the investigation of trump and his company. The subpoena seeks information from Columbia Grammar and prep where grandchildren of Trump Organization Cfl And Weisselberg are students. From 2012 to 2019 more than 500,000 was paid for by checks signed by weisselberg or trump. Where does that tell you of where the following of the money has taken prosecutors in new york . My take on that reporting, assuming its correct, is that this is not so much an investigation directly at trump but its rather focussed on getting weisselberg to flip because it would be hard to prove that even if these payments were made by Donald Trump himself that he understood that that income was not going to be declared by the recipients of and the beneficiaries of those tuition payments. But on the other hand, it would be quite damning evidence if there was half A Million Dollars in tuition payments made and not reported by the weisselbergs. So to me this shows that theyre really still trying to get weisselberg to flip and that also to me would indicate again, this is all guess work, that theyre still a ways away from trump. If you need an insider, this indicates to me that theyre not there yet. Very, very, very informed outsider, i have to add.
