A former president who provoked a violent attack on this capitol in an effort to steal the election has resumed his aggressive effort to convince americans that the election was stolen from him. Her father, former Vice President dick cheney, has been involved in those talks as well. Joining me now, is Msnbc Capitol Hill correspondent. They are saying this is the beginning, not The End, that she is looking very far past the vote that set to unfold today and even though, yes, she is losing her Leadership Position over this, in many ways, she has lelveted her own profile in a way that sets her Up To be the main opposition to former President Trump. What are you hearing about how this is going to unfold today . And what is your take on her future . She also did that speech on the House Floor to put this in the congressional record as well. She wants to be on the right side of history so she is making her case known so that history can remember it. There is a couple of things that also stuck out to me in that speech. Republicans keep saying that they dont want to look to the past, they want to look to the future and the midterm elections. In her speech Last Night, she indicated that she is also talking about the present. This threat of the former president is not going away. He continues to mislead voters. You could look take a wider lens and look what is happening in states across the country so far as Election Rules are concerned, and this socalled republicanled audit of vote from the 2020 ten votes of support. Others are telling me that it might be 40 to 50. Others are telling me that they dont know how they are going to vote today when they walk in to that room. It is a secret ballot. We dont really know what is going to happen because No One is going to have to know how these individual members vote, so i think its going to be be really telling on how much support she does, in fact, get. Remember, its not a vote between her and Elise Stefanik. She is the only Person Today and they have to make a decision whether they are going to move her or not, its likely to happen but ill be watching that Vote Count outside. Im glad you bring this up. They could set it up differently and could have been a choice between two peoples which is a very different tally that would have gone into the history books. Here, we may actually get a measure of how many times have you and i had private conversations with republicans who watch what the former president did, is doing, and said, i cant stand this, but then refuse to say so in public. It may be an interesting measure how loud that faction really is. As we push forward here, one piece of this that i keep hearing about is this idea that former President Trump may run again for president in 2024. I think when he first loss there was a sense that rah unlikely but daybyday that chatter seems to be increasing and that puts a lot of other republican president ial candidates on the sidelines and people who would consider themselves to be very loyal to former President Trump or perhaps who lost to him in 2016 like ted cruz, for example. This potentially sets Liz Cheney outside of that dynamic looking ahead. Kevin mccarthy may be looking at 2022. I think she is looking at 2024. I think youre right. I think this is mccarthys big gamble as well. I think that the likelihood of Donald Trump running for president again has grown exponentially after mccarthy booted part of his Membership Committee because of what Liz Cheney said about the former president. He singlehandedly has brought him back into the fold in in a way that he was disappearing for the fast few weeks as time went on. If he does run again for president , im going to point very likely we dont know what is going to happen in the future but to this moment of what is happening when he thinks he is king of the Republican Party because cheney is going to lose her seat. But, you know, cheney says that she is going to run for reelection and she is continue to be a very loud voice in the Republican Party. We dont know what is going to happen in 2024. I think it does set her up for a very, very big platform should she, herself, decide to run. It is a good point that that race in wyoming will be, i think, a critical test for her. The phrase that stuck in my mind what Mitchell Mcconnell said if you can write the rules you can win the game. That explains so much what mcconnell has done in his political career, including his focus on judges and Campaign Finance and so many other things. But its particularly important here in the context of Voting Restrictions that we are seeing this play out across the country as we have noted here. And potentially the federal government has a role to play. Now its possible this bill is not actually going to get out of this committee marking it up. It may hit some snags. How do, especially folks that you talk to who focus so much on these issues, how do they view the importance of what they were debating yesterday . Its either hr1 and now known as s1 in the senate. This for the Peoples Act is really a broad, expansive bill that goes beyond Voting Rights and takes on things like Campaign Finance reform and more and one of the cornerstones of the democrats genetic and has a opposing within the party and joe manchin. What im hearing is that there is a push to get lawmakers to focus more narrowly on another bill. The John Lewis Voting Rights Act which would essentially reinstate the parts of the voting Rights Act that were tossed out by the Supreme Court eight years ago and it would require states that have a history of Voting Restrictions to get preclearance from the department of justice. They said that would be really laserfocused to address what we are seeing going right now and its possible for that even get some republican support. Lisa murkowski was a cosponsor of that bill when it was last filed in the congress. And perhaps that could move forward. Either way, they would have to get rid of the filibuster that mcconnell was talking about and they would have to drop that 60vote Threshold in order to get anything passed and its still unclear whether there is enough support in the senate to be able to do that. Kimberly, i just want to connect this to what we are about to see play out in Congress Today with republicans set to throw Liz Cheney overboard after she insisted, in fact, that the election was not stolen because it just seems critical to underscore that former President Trumps lies about who won the election is now becoming tied up in all of these fights and what people believe in the states about who won the election and the degree of a problem that exists or doesnt exist around our Voting Infrastructure is really set to be the central debate perhaps in the midterm elections. How do you see these things playing out . What is the role of the former president in continuing to push this false narrative that there were huge problems in the election that need to be fixed . Well, this false narrative is still serving as the basis for what we are seeing lawmakers in arizona and other states doing. Although you have this pushback from people like Liz Cheney, there werent enough of them and not enough of them to keep her in leadership. There just seems to be this really strong trumpism that is taking over the Republican Party and this is the way they see they can win, which is by making It Hardlier for people to vote and basing it on the Big Lie. Thank you so much for being here, especially because we are discussing the, i dont know if you call it a disintegration but seems like a Civil War inside the Republican Party has essentially been won by former President Trump and mccarthy is going to oust Liz Cheney today. How much support do you think there is for someone like Liz Cheney among the countrys voters and especially in the wake of the insurrection . We know that republicans, people who still identify as republicans overwhelmingly say they support former President Trump. But i think my question is is this group of people i dont even necessarily want to call them nevertrumpers. Because my question is whether there are more of them now after the insurrection. There is a constituency for this former group of officials and for Liz Cheney . I think we can separate it out. I think with the group of 13 officials i dont think a trump voters, neither of them could name a single one. Fair. I dont think that is effective at all. I do think, look. I think there is a fairly large segment of the party if you look at some of the polls whether or not trump should run again a sizeable number say, lets move on. I think that is a little different and i think that is where it might not be in the strident Liz Cheney vein. People could name Liz Cheney in the party but where kind of the future is is not where the insurrection was but whether trump should have a role, especially an elected role, in the party going forward. Matt, can we talk a little bit about cheney, herself, and how she what she is doing is being perceived . I know, you know, you work among republican consultants class, people who have spent a lot of time working on elections and a lot of people with a lot of experience here. What is your sense of how people are looking at what cheney has decided to do here . Are they viewing it as an act of courage . Are they viewing it as a Suicide Mission . Are they viewing it as something that is smart . Or do they not understand why she is doing what she is doing . I think its a couple of things. Again, my conversations with some of members and staff, i think at this point, this is, again, different than a few months ago when, you know, mccarthy stood by her and she gave a pretty good speech at a conference meeting. I think at this point they want to rip the bandaid out and view it, in many ways, as a distraction and in they said, look. We have to focus on 2022 and everybody talking about this battle and a day we are not talking about joe biden. Essentially what they said, one of them told me is, look. Whether Elise Stefanik is the Conference Chair or Liz Cheney, we still it wont matter to one voter. We are still [ inaudible ]. When you talk about taking the house, matt, do you think Kevin Mccarthy is going to be speaker . Or do you think former President Trump might step in and essentially throw him overboard . If we take back the house barring something catastrophic, Kevin Mccarthy will absolutely be the speaker. I do, however, think that trump relishes the fact that he has and will have more control if we do take back the house. I think if you talk to certainly him and others in his orbit, he thought Thought And H was too deferential, too paul ryan in 2017 about taking office and a big example of that they point to is going with Obamacare Repeal as the first Priority Right off the bat as opposed to trump wanted to do that could have been more of an Infrastructure Package or tax reform. No matter who the speaker is, it will certainly be Kevin Mccarthy, trump will exert a lot more influence. I guess we may be about to find out. Matt gorman, thank you for being here. Good morning, kasie. Today is massive day on Capitol Hill. Liz cheney is expected to be the process of beginning to remove her from leadership is expected to happen today. But, a lot of attention, of course, focussed on whats going on with House Republicans. But we take a look at how Speaker Nancy Pelosi has been kind of viewing this and her strategy here of how she and other democrats are really kind of seizing whats going on in the Republican Party right now. This sort of Proxy War in the party and taking advantage of it for herself. Its something weve seen in the past and we note that today simultaneously as this process is beginning to remove Liz Cheney from leadership Nancy Pelosi as well as the other Big Four congressional leaders will be meeting with President Biden at the White House. And so, we have seen in past moments very different but in the Trump Administration when these leaders had met in the Oval Office or at the White House with the former president , we saw Nancy Pelosi and the former president go at it many times. She had some iconic moments when she stood over a table in a blue dress wagging her finger at the former president. And it just kind of shows how shes done this before and starting to see this now with how shes handling this thing with Kevin Mccarthy. Sending out rapid response, making sure that everyone knows what to use to address the dysfunction in the party right now. I think theyre reveling right now in whats happening. It should be a time when House Republicans are really united. But instead, of course, were seeing this big divide and many republicans and former Trump Administration officials threatening to leave the party over it. Well, sure. This is, of course, why if you talk to Kevin Mccarthy and his allies they say they want to get rid of Liz Cheney because the focus is on this fight and not on the historical precedence that suggests they have a really good shot at taking back the house. So, elena, in terms of pelosi, she has to tread a little lightly, right . I saw her remarks last week about Liz Cheney basically saying, good for her. Shes standing up. But she also noted, hey, me saying that is probably not going to help you. I dont like it when other people interfere in my conference politics. So, if youre pelosi, how are you thinking about obviously she, as you point out, was a very sharp opponent of Donald Trump and Liz Cheney is also going after Donald Trump. Does Pelosi Steer clear of cheney a little bit, or does she continue to praise her, which possibly could hurt cheney politically. You know, you make a good point. When it comes to Liz Cheney directly, well see different types of rhetoric. I think the focus right now of the House Speaker is to attack the party and not focus on Liz Cheney for standing up and doing what they say is the right thing and using the going after or at least being one of the very few republicans to not side with Donald Trump. But shes also still especially on the issues one of the most conservative members of congress. And especially when you look at who might replace her in the number three spot, Elise Stefanik, Liz Cheney is far more conservative. Democrats recognize that, too. Its n just a look shes standing Up To Donald Trump. Nohe should be a political martyr. I think people are looking at her as being one of few people who they say, no, great, shes doing the right thing. We admire that but also not going so far as to say shes one of us. So by no means are they trying to paint her in a light that, you know, doesnt account for all of the differences in their political views. They are set to throw Liz Cheney out of the leadership of the party because she insists that the election was not stolen as former President Trump claims. It is, weve talked about it a lot, it remains an incredibly remarkable moment. And my question is still, what does Liz Cheney do next . And again, we talked about this a little earlier in the broadcast, is there a constituency there, specially in the wake of insurrection that could support some growing movement that exists outside of the Trump Party . They could call it the Republican Party. They could call it something else because as we know the Republican Party is now, in fact, the Trump Party. That is what were going to see happen today.
