The move to push past the 6th. All we have to do is deal with the fallout that comes. Most likely it will be a oneday story. Most likely you wont loseshare when All In starts right now. Good evening from new york. Im chris hayes. We have a country that devolves a lot of power to state and local governments. Theres always a complex interplay between states, municipalities, federal government. One of the things that we allow state and local governments to do is administer elections. It creates a weirdly complicated system compared to other countries. You can argue states know whats best for their voters, right, since they are closest to them. The problem, of course, is that throughout much of this Countrys History that local power was abused primarily to stop black people from voting, to erect a one Party Minority authoritarian state throughout most of the american south. In the 1960s after blood, sweat, tears, organizing it came up with a Grand Bargain. You know what it is called a voting Rights Act. It did not fully nationalize elections in this country. It was an attempt to create a floor for the administration of those elections as well as mechanisms of oversight to make sure that local election boards were not abusing the high levels of discretionary power that they have. Levels of power they had used to effectuate and further White Supremacy and antidemocratic exclusion. It worked. It worked. It worked. For nearly 50 years. It is one of the most successful pieces of legislation in american history. Look at this chart of black Voter Registration in southern states. The columns in the left, those are black Voter Registration levels before the vote was passed. Mississippi is just under 7 . Much higher columns in the right under green, black Voter Registration levels just two years later, two years after the voting Rights Act was passed. Look at that. And those new black voters elected black politicians to elect them. This shows the number of black southern legislators. You can see before the voting Rights Act there were practically no black southern legislators starting in 1965. That number steadily climbed. The law was largely embraced by members of both parties. For instance, when congress voted to renew it in 2006, that vote passed from a vote of 980 and the house 39033. Thats as close to consensus as you get in American Life. In fact, when republican President George W bush signed the extension of the law, this is how he described it. Four decades since the voting Rights Act was first passed we made progress toward equality at the work for A More Perfect Union is never ending. Well continue to build on the legal quality to help ensure that every person enjoys the opportunity that this great land of liberty offers. This brings community on the lives of the american democracy. My administration will vigorously enforce the provisions of this law and we will defend it in court. Again, that was just like panic for everyone, okay, at the time. We will defend it in court. Weve gone a long way towards solving this particular problem, not all racial equity issues, but this particular problem, the targeted disenfranchisement of black voters, the use of local discretion as a tool of Oppression And Exclusion and then just seven years later after that Speech Chief Justice John Roberts came in and he just broke it again. In 2013 a fringe right Wing Movement pairing with John Roberts and others on the supreme court destroyed the voting Rights Act in a monumental case claiming more or less racism was over and done so what the heck are we doing here. Its important to remember there was no Grassroots Rebellion against the voting Rights Act. There were some localities that wanted to do their own thing in the south, and there were some right Wing Jury lists, but getting rid of the voting Rights Act, make no mistake, was a raw act of judicial activism. At the time federal judge Richard Posner wrote about the decision, Shelby County versus Hold Ner Struck Down a key point of the voting Rights Act to obtain federal permission in advance to change their Voting Procedures call preclearance. As violating the fundamental principle of equal sovereignty, he quotes that, of the states. This is a principle of constitutional law of which i had never heard for the excellent reason that there is no such principle. Thats right, John Roberts just invented it. He invented the principle so he could do what he wanted to do to break and destroy the voting Rights Act, one of the most successful pieces of Voting Rights history. Where do we find ourselves eight years later . Look what Chief Justice roberts has done. He took this completely effective way of balancing all of these different interests and he destroyed it because he just didnt like it and nothing has risen up in its place. In fact, what we have now are a Republican Party further radicalized and using their power in states and localities to do what they can to gain an advantage. Take what happened just today in arizona where they are not just doing a phony forensic audit in an arena next to a circus. Today Doug Dousy signed a law that experts say will remove more than 100,000 voters including 30,000 latino voters from the states early voting list. That means they will no longer receive mail ballots. Arizona was one of the states that was covered by preclearance. They would have had to get preclearance to do this from the federal government. What arizona republicans are doing with their bogus Election Audit is a pr stunt. Democrats have Voting Rights bills in the House And Senate in an attempt to try to reset the balance, right . To fill the vacuum left by John Roberts and the conservatives in the court. The Grand Bargain that we had that John Lewis shed blood for along with thousands and thousands of others. At the markup of the Senate Bill Today democrats tried to sound a warning about these anti democratic bills republicans are pushing across the country while republicans trotted out bad faith arguments that democrats are trying to game the system. We are witnessing an attempt at the greatest contraction of Voting Rights since the end of reconstruction and the beginning of jim crow. Republicans no longer want to let the voters pick their politicians, they want to let politicians pick their voters. The truth is quite simple, our democracys not in crisis. And we arent going to let one party take over our democracy under the false pretense of saving. Our democracy is not in crisis. I mean, yes, we did have a violent insurrection whipped up by the last president. But, you know, nothing to see here. And so now were back to all of this again. The prevoting Rights Act, Thank You, John Roberts. Were going to have oversight and a check against attempts to lock voters out of the process. Now the only way to deal with this is to create some sort of new federal standards but democrats need 60 votes to pass that. Republicans have made it clear theyre All In on making it as hard as they can to vote. Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar chairs the senate Rules Committee which conducted the markup. How did the markup go today, senator . Pretty good. Do remember, our goal was to at least get that even vote. What does that mean, chris . We can bring that bill to the floor, Senator Schumer can. If we had lost a democrat and the committee was incredible, including moderates like Engas King and Mark Warner on our committee, then we wouldnt have been able to get it to the floor. We had a long, long markup. Senator cruz dominated the day and when you read that quote from Senator Mcconnell or played it, i did keep thinking the same thing. Yeah, theres a crisis when you have an insurrection. Theres a crisis when you have senators that basically said, oh, forget the electoral vote and believe the Big Lie and theres a crisis when youve got voters standing in line in Garbage Bags and homemade masks like they did in milwaukee or people in georgia who cant get water if theyve got a long line or when you basically say were only going to have one Drop Box in a county of 5 Million people like happened in texas last time and thats harris county. That would be like putting one Drop Box in the middle of my entire state. Thats why this bill is so important to allow people to take back our democracy. That means getting rid of the secret money, it means making sure Theres Anticorruption provisions in place and it of course means minimum national standards for voting. Can i ask. I dont think youre going to love this question. After today with Ted Cruz. Come on. Go at it. Okay. Im going to take that as a challenge. Im going to ask about Ted Cruz in a second. What the supreme court technically Struck Down what i am struck by is we are having a fight over something that was solved. Its important, you need a federal check because its been abused in the past. Is there a way of just restoring the Preclearance Formula . Yes. In a way the court could we just do that in it seems like were trying to reinvent the wheel . Lets step back. John Lewis Voting Rights Act, right . Thats a separate bill in judiciary. That would go a long way towards restoring that. That is such an important bill but it still doesnt solve some of the problems of the dark money, right . Thats why we have the disclose act. It doesnt solve the problems that we have crazy situations where the Supreme Court Of The United States has no ethics rules even though Darrell Issa did propose a bill to bring those in. The point is that you need both. You need to restore the voting Rights Act with the John Lewis bill and then you need the for the people act because it actually sets the minimum standards and would make it a whole lot easier. One thing weve learned as the fourth circuit once said, these guys are discriminating with surgical precision against africanamericans. They will do anything. Purging voters from the list. Stacey abrams said, you know what, when you dont go to a meeting for a while, you dont lose your right to assemble. You shouldnt lose your right to vote. I want to play this. Ted cruz is one of eight u. S. Senators if im recalling the number correctly who voted to reject the electors which essentially would have installed the loser, Donald Trump, over the winner, joe biden, in contravention of both the Electoral College and the national popular vote. When you talked about this today, he did this similar move which is to look at his phone. Take a look. When in fact you, senator cruz, not all of your colleagues here today, you were contesting the Electoral College. You were meeting one of the leaders on the effort to say that the Election Results were not correct. And so you wonder why we want to make sure people have the right to vote . What was going on there . Well, he made the claim that we didnt need to put these provisions in place and he went back of all ironies to 2016 and claimed that Schou Hillary Clinton contested and we sure didnt have an insurrection like we did when he took the reins and claimed that the Electoral College was inaccurate and we couldnt count the peoples votes. That was 2020. I was making the comparison and making the obvious argument that literally we had a group of White Supremacists invade the capitol, the people died, that we all remember the splintered glass and the Spray Painting on the walls and for now him to come and say, oh, hey, everythings okay, no, not everythings okay. And as i said on that inaugural stage, it is the moment where a democracy picks itself up. Brushes itself off. One nation under god with Liberty And Justice for all. How you do that, make sure the people can retake the democracy and vote. If his Party Cant adjust as i said today, adjust their views on issues so they bring in more voters or adjust their messages or candidates, they Cant Win by taking away peoples right to vote. Thats what theyre trying to do right now. Senate Amy Klobuchar who is chair of the committee, Thank You very much. Thank you, chris. As Justice Correspondent for the nation magazine, Alli Mistal has been following this. He joins me now. I want to start on the Roberts Court and what the supreme court has raught. Theres a sort of sense of this whackamole. Passing one in texas, georgia, arizona. These 100,000 voters in arizona, this Drop Box in texas. Its precisely that infrastructure that we used to have at a federal level with civil servants and not politicians looking at it which cuts both ways. If advocates are saying this is horrible, disparate impact, no, this is fine, thats also good. Its good to have someone dispassionately evaluate this stuff. Your open was right and your question to Senator Klobuchar was exactly right. This was raught by John Roberts. The foreign people act or the John Lewis act is that John Roberts is still there, right . Right. Nothing has happened to make him go away. The Anthony Kennedy was part of the majority in Shelby County Joining Roberts in eviscerating the voting Rights Act. Anthony kennedy is being replaced by rapist ben cavanaugh. I cannot count to five. I cannot count to five votes on the supreme court that would uphold anything that gets passed by this congress to secure the voting Rights Act so i dont know what were doing. If were not expanding the court, if were not aggressively reforming the court, we are doing nothing to protect Voting Rights because John Roberts and now six conservatives can destroy whatever congress passes out of this congress just as easily as they destroyed the initial voting Rights Act. Its such an important point. Dont change the channel. Stay with us here. No, i mean, but it points to i mean, youre totally right. John roberts is sitting there i went on a date with my wife. I was watching the oysters come over. Hes sitting watching like Senate Bill 1 like bring it right here. Lobster. I know what to do with that bill. Youre totally right about that. It speaks in some ways to the perfundity of the democratic stakes. Its these small whittling attacks to the margins. The Animating Spirit of It Harkens Back to the original part of the country and the worst authoritarian impulses. We have to do some work to keep democracy going in a bunch of different directions. This is the battle were always fighting. There are four amendments to the constitution trying to get over our original sin of having a democracy where only rich white people could vote. The 15th Amendment, 19th amendment. The 24th which dropped the voting right. I could throw away the 17th amendment. That five amendments trying to expand the franchise. Whos been against them at every point . Conservatives. Whether those conservatives call themselves democrats in the 1860s, whether they call themselves republicans today, whether they call themselves democrats from West Virginia today, conservatives are the once against expanding the franchise. Why . Because when Everybody Votes conservatives Cant Win. They know it. I know it. Everybody knows it. When Everybody Votes and everybodys votes counted the current Conservative Party cannot win. So theyre not playing chess. Theyre not trying to arrange the white pieces so they can outflank the black pieces. They are trying to throw the black pieces off the board and say, check mate. Thats their actual political strategy and it has worked at various times in our Countrys History very well. Yeah. And that point about, i mean, the point with the voting Rights Act and the 15th Amendment is the reminder. We had the 15th amend. It was quite clear. It was quite clear that what happened afterwards was not okay and yet it happened again. We have to pass the voting Rights Act to get back to the Square One of essentially Reconstruction Naryury Enfranchisement itself. The battle continues now. Thank you so much. Thanks for having me. Were on the eve of a pretty big moment for the twoparty system. Tomorrow the Republican Party is going to vote to remove Liz Cheney from her Leadership Position because basically she refuses to peddle Donald Trumps Big Lie, that the election was stolen, that he was the rightful winner. Tonight in a pretty remarkable moment Liz Cheney took to the house to say her peace. This literally just happened. Well show it to you next. For mikes retirement party. House republicans are going to try to pull off their purge of congresswoman Liz Cheney of wyoming from leadership for the simple sin the telling the truth, refusing to tell the Big Lie. The vote is expected to be done by secret Ballot Or Voice vote. Today Liz Cheney took to the House Floor to address what is happening. Today we face a Threat America has never seen before. Former president who provoked a violent attack on this capitol in an effort to steal the election has resumed his aggressive effort to convince americans that the election was stolen from him. He risks inciting further violence. Millions of americans have been misled by the former president. They have heard only his words but not the truth as he continues to undermine our democratic Process Sewing seeds of doubt about whether democracy really works at all. I am a conservative republican and the most conservative of conservative principles is reverence for the rule of law. The Electoral College has voted. More than 60 state and federal courts including multiple judges, the former president appointed, have rejected his claims. The Trump Department of justice investigated the former president s claims of widespread fraud and found no evidence to support them. The election is over. That is the rule of law. That is our constitutional process. We have two guests here. Mona, ill start with you. Aside from one sentence which we can get to in a secretary, the pius conservative principles, take out that o sentence, everything there is just factual claims of whats happening is essentially indisputable. The plain truth of whats happening. Like we all know and that is the thing that youre not allowed to say. Thats exactly it. This is a war on truth that is now being joined by or apparently about to be joined by the entire republican conference and it really raises questions about how capable this country is of sustaining democracy because its really hard to overstate what this says about the state of the Republican Party. They are saying that Liz Cheney is unacceptable because she will not bend to the Big Lie and if thats not acceptable, if thats the stand the party is now lashing itself to, then any lie in the service of republicans is going to be demanded, right . And so i raised in my column a question, what happens, bear in mind, i was a republican for 40 years, but what happens if the republicans take the house, as is likely, in 2022, and theyre called upon in 2024 to certify an election at the Electoral College, will it be expected that any republican in good standing will lie . It appears so. Yeah. Ive been very focused on that point and i liked your column for that, which is january 26th, 2025, will feature literally the same thing. Thats how we do it. Its usually just a vote procedural, administrative vote, and if it becomes dont forget that it started sorry to interrupt you. Dont forget in 2020 Mike Pence who in other respects is invert brat did his constitutional duty. None of the states he won sent different delegates to congress in violation of the votes of the people. None of that happened in 2020 but the party be endorsing trumps lies and his fantasy about the election are really throwing into doubt whether in 2024 those same standards would be upheld. Olivia, i want to just bring up Mike Pence. What does Mike Pence of the hang my Pence Chant think about all of this . Mike pence of the man who Donald Trump painted a target on the back of, who Donald Trump after the capitol had been breached tweeted about, that the crowd was there to, i dont know, i mean, according to their words, hang Mike Pence, what does he think about all of this . Well, apparently, chris, he thinks nothing. He has been silent. He hasnt taken a stand. He hasnt spoken out trying to defend our democracy like Liz Cheney is. Clearly hes known Liz Cheney for a long time. They are true conservatives. Depending how you define the word. When you are not standing with Liz Cheney at this moment and doing everything you can to defend her for what shes doing in defense of the truth in our democracy, you have failed americans because youre not just failing the Republican Party at this point, you truly are failing our society because what is happening right now will have consequences. They are subverting the truth and they will continue to do this over and over again. Yeah. I think, mona, because i was raised catholic although not the most Faithful Catholic these days, i Cant Help but see this in these sort of terms of Sin And Temptation and this sort of you know, the kind of mortal compromise. Its like stefanik is telling herself, ill do this and ill get a little more power. These lies and things people are telling themselves, i can make do with Donald Trump when he brings new voters into the party, it will lead to ruin. It already did. This is the thing that is so crazy. Those of us who are screaming our heads off for months running into the election saying, look what hes doing, then after the election say, look what hes doing, it culminates on national television on January 6th, i feel like ive lost my mind for anyone about whats the big deal. This is exactly what we warned you about. Exactly. So many aspects of the last five years have made people like you and me feel like were taking crazy pills. It is insane that there wasnt a national revulsion by Everybody Up And Down The Line about January 6th. The initial response, dont forget, in the first hours after that atrocity thats right. Everybody behaved normally, right . Lindsey graham said, okay, im done. You know, Kevin Mccarthy was very, very strong and saying that trump had responsibility for this. He called it, so on, so forth, then within 48 hours yeah. Their spinelessness returned. And its just i mean, it is just so dismaying that those antibodies that used to be a natural part of every decent american, and i think that was all the overwhelming majority, the antibodies against this kind of totalitarian temptation, if you will, were very strong. And they have become eroded in an unbelievably short amount of time. Mona and olivia, Thank You both for making the time tonight. I really, really appreciate it. After the violent insurrection on January 6th just as mona was saying, Everyone Sort of well, a lot of people reacted normally with horror and revulsion. Among the people that did, corporate america. The memories are short so four months later republicans are attempting to erase the memory of January 6th and help corporations that have interests figure out how to get back to voting. The Trade Organization for these corporate pacs has been encouraging the membership to move beyond January 6th and resume their political contributions. Michael duquesne essentially was coaching representatives of these corporate pacs on how to restart their donations. Do whats right for your Organization And Deal with the palout that comes. Most likely its going to be a oneday story. Most likely youre not going to lose Customer Share over it. That doesnt mean you shouldnt be cognizant of it and be aware of it. We reached out to mr. Due canes there and he sent along the statement. Anyone who follows me know i have been critical. I strongly condemned the attack on our democracy. Any insinuation is measly. I do believe we need everyone, both parties to stay engaged in the political process because that is the best way to move forward. Stay engaged. That is the message i was conveying and judge whether this seminar was presented. Doug legum is the one who broke this story. Judd, first, can you give us a little context about what this webinar event was, who the group is thats hosting it and what the point of it was . Well, this is a group, the National Association Of Business Pacs thats actually the Trade Association for corporate pacs. They hold different seminars and in march this seminar featuring Michael Duhaime was titled, Where Do We Go From Here . And the purpose of it was many of these companies had pledged to suspend their donations to all politicians or just the 147, and this group, which you call nabpac, it has its initials spell out. , was trying to help them work through the donations. If you listen to the webinar which is about 40 minutes long, the clear message was that corporations should begin to restart their donations to the members of congress that voted to overturn the election. Thats what mr. Duhaime who is a crisis consultant, republican operative should take them through. Set up a Murder Board with different Communications Professionals and sort of mildly tough questions about why youre giving to insurrectionists and get prepared and take your lumps and lets move forward. I should point out Michael Duhaime is someone with a public profile. He hasnt been trumpy. He has been, as he noted, quite critical of January 6th, critical of trump and all of this stuff. This is the gravitational pull here, which is like everyone had seizures of conscience. They were horrified of what they saw and Public Opinion pushed them in that direction. But it doesnt matter in the long run. Business is business. Theyre going to get back to it. Yeah. And i think thats where duhaime was coming from in this webinar. It wasnt a trump fest. There wasnt a lot of talk about how the election was stolen, it was about the necessity of getting these contributions started and how to prioritize the Bottom Line of your business and he was very direct that these contributions are the way that corporations get access to politicians and encourage them he said that thats a good reason you can continue to do that, but because of this new environment, youre going to have to, for public consumption, come up with a pretexts, a better reason to tell the public why youre resuming. He says at one point, its a perfectly good reason to say youre donating to these legislators because they have power over you, but you cant say that out loud. If you write insofar as that is the reason, this Access Relationship and wanting to sort of degrees the wheels of regulatory decisions is precisely whats going on with all of these pacs. Yeah. I think there was a moment in time, were actually still in that moment, where corporations said this may not be in our financial interests, but what happened on January 6th was so outside the bounds of what we can tolerate that were going to put that aside. Yeah. If you look at the first quarter of donations, for the most part there were exceptions, but for the most part corporations withheld that money. But now is really a test and theres a push and pull. Are corporations going to stick to that or are we going back to Business As Usual . Thats what this was about. John, great reporting. Very well done. Thanks for making time for us. Thanks, chris. Ben rhoades on the latest on the deadly violence between israeli and palestinians. Why its shifting before our eyes. Strong hair with new Dove Breakage Remedy. Yesterday you might have seen this new York City mayoral candidate Andrew Yang put in a statement about the latest violence between israelis and palestinians. Im standing with the people of israel who are coming under bombardment attacks and condemn the hamas terrorists. Hamas has been Firing Rockets indiscriminately into israel proper for three days. The first such barrage of this magnitude in seven years. Theres a u. S. Funded Air Defense System called Iron Dome which has managed to intercept most of them. Today the barrages killed three people and forced them to close the airport. The statement from Andrew Yang is not unusual. His statement holy omits that just the day before israel began airstrikes in gaza that killed at least 30 palestinians including 10 children, wounding over 200 people according to palestinian officials there. Yangs statement is an attempt to evict palestinian families from the homes in the East Jerusalem city. Its long pursued by people who believe all of israel should be brought under israeli control. What happened after Andrew Yangs tweet was especially interesting. He was approvingly retweeted from stephen miller. Andrew yang is exactly right. Congressman Ilhan Mn is wrong. He got a big thumbs up from Ted Cruz who said Bravo To Yang for opposing the rapidly prohamas and antiisrael attacks from fellow members. The politics here are shifting both in the region where israel has normalized relations with a number of arab nations and here in the u. S. Where the democratic party has a growing fissure over this very issue. So far nearly 20 democrats in the Senate And House have issued statements. There is a bill with 18 cosponsors to prohibit them from using u. S. Aid and annexing palestinian land. Ben rhoades has seen the complexities and the domestic politics of it all. He was the deputy national Security Adviser for strategic communications and Speech Writing and Ben Rhoades joins me. Ben, i want to start. Things are bad right now. They are escalating. Theres real concern. The u. N. Envoy for Middle East peace talked about the concern of full scale war. What is your reaction to what we are seeing right now . And what the biden administration can do. Well, its a hard situation. Its a worst Case Scenario of escalation, chris. You had a systematic effort to remove the palestinians. You had attacks or against worshippers. Then you have hamas, terrorist organization, Firing Indiscriminate Rockets in israel and now we see the escalation where israel comes in heavy handed blowing up blocks where civilians live. The biden administration has to get involved. The two gaza wars in 2008 and 2012 during Obamas Tenure took the united states getting involved to try to psh a ceasefire. The biden team is reluctant to get involved because theres not a lot of prospect of peace. Unless the u. S. Steps in, this situation is going to get further out of control. How are things changing . What have you learned about handling this portfolio and the u. S. s relationship to israel and the palestiniries and what have you learned from your time in the Obama Administration in navigating that . What surprised you . Well, i mean, chris, im just going to be honest here. I mean, what i learned is that the old Talking Points dont learn anymore. Were accustomed to u. S. Officials, people like me, going out and talking about a Twostate Solution but the reality is the facts on the ground have changed overwhelmingly in the last decade or two. A Palestinian State is almost impossible. They have moved further and further to the right and theyre not interested in peace. He doesnt want there to be a Palestinian State on his watch. What theyre responding to is the fact that the old Talking Points dont apply to this circumstance anymore. Theres such a vast asymmetry of power that people are saying, hey, Wait A minute here, obviously we condemn hamas and the industry and the power. Theyre in dire circumstance. I think theis Opening Up Fissures in the democratic party at the same time that Republican Party in part which has evangelical support for Igs Rail is more in Lock Step for the is r5i8ly system. Its interesting. Israel guns used to be this way. It didnt break down on partisan polarizing lines and israel has not been. Its been a great triumph of various institutions, apac and others, the israeli government and others. They went through institutions, American Politics are poll polarizing. Ron germer had this to say. We talked about the backbone of american political support for israel. Lets take a listen to what he said. People have to understand the backbone of israel support in the united states is the evangelical christians. Its true because of numbers and also because of their passionate and unequivocal support for israel. Look at numbers. 25 . Some people think more. 25 are evangelical christians. Less than 25 are jews. If you look just at numbers, you should be spending time to do outreach to the evangelical christians than you would do to jews. I think, ben, that points to something you were saying and also the sort of Flip Side of that are fissures within the large american jewish population, folks that are orthodox, who are secular, who are liberal, who are conservative on an issue that used to be more uniting than it is now. Absolutely. I think what netanyahu advised has decided that we can do what we need to do with the support uniformly at the Republican Party. Yeah. And some democratic support. If theres a divide in the democratic party, even in the american jewish community, thats okay. I think that puts at risk the bipartisan long Term Support for israel and the united states. I think younger democrats are raising more and more questions. Look, chris, the reality is the millions of palestinians that look in the area that is governed or occupied by israel, they are there. If its not a Twostate Solution, what is the solution . Is it a one state where palestinians have the rights . Are they increasingly driven out of their homes. Is it some situation where they are second class citizens . There are not good answers for the israeli government led by benjamin netanyahu. And thats why i thats why i think people in the united states who care about structural injustice, who care about human rights, you know, in the united states and israel and other countries around the world, its not singling israel out, its a uniform progressive agenda of asking hard questions about, hey, Wait A second here, what are we supporting in terms of policies that are not only not bringing peace, but bring about these escalations that we see. Lets get you to the exhale you didnt know you were waiting for. Lets get it. Together. So we can be together. Lets get to immunity. Nows your moment to get vaccinated. Some good news. We have some positive signs in the u. S. Covid cases are down more than 30 over the past few weeks. Vaccination rates are ticking back up again after a fairly worrying Decline And Pfizer shots are now authorized for anyone over the age of 12, adding millions and millions of new folks who can get vaccinated. Here to tell us if its time to celebrate, dr. Peter hotez at Baylor College of medicine, codirector of the texas hospital. I want to talk about the Case Numbers because we saw in israel, in the u. K. Around 50 things started to really come down. We saw viral suppression happening. It looks like we are starting to see that in the last week or two here. What do you think . It may be the case, especially in the states that are doing well with vaccination rates. So if you look at the New England states, new york, new jersey, as well as california, new mexico, what you have now is about 60 of the country 60 of those populations have received a single dose. 40 to 45 two doses. So you are getting up towards israel numbers and you are seeing a really steep decline. So thats really exciting news that we could reproduce whats been done in israel in some of the states. The worrisome news, those are blue or blueish states that lead at the top. The bottom of the list, all The Deep Red states are not doing nearly as well. They are still in the 30 range in states like georgia, tennessee, alabama, in the south, and then wyoming and idaho up in the mountain area. What i worry about is if you remember, chris, at this time last year we were also doing pretty well, and then as the summer hit the numbers skyrocketed in the southern es. It looks like the southern states will be partially vaccinated and i dont know what that means. And so im kind of holding my breath about the south right now. Obviously, there is a complicated mix of factors in the population that hasnt been vaccinated yet. I think there is a huge population that just hasnt gotten around to it or for whatever reason hasnt been super proactive about it, but her not hardcore resisters and then folks that dont want to get the shot. You have been a target of the antivax movement. How are you seeing this as one who dealt with this political tendency in American Life for a while, how is this playing out now . I think that the difference between now and the last year or so compared to in the past is the increasing politicization and linking it to far rightwing Extremist Groups and becoming mainstream across parts of the Republican Party. So the attacks coming to me for the last week, what happened was a group that i didnt know that much about, but i looked it up and they call them they are identified as a far right Wing Conspiracy Theory kind of antivaccine group started telling followers to contact me providing my Email And Phone numbers. Its been a nonstop barrage of pretty scary emails and, you know, saying they are a group of armed patriots that are going to hunt me down and that kind of stuff. They love that i nazi imagery. Lots of hangings and nuremberg and that kind of stuff. So its pretty unnerving. We will have to keep on watching it. This is the nature of the antivaccine movement in the country. Its somehow married to far right wing extreme and white nationalist groups. And that was starting over the last couple of years, but its gotten more expense and more expansive. Dr. Peter hotez, i hope you are safe and well and you have been incredible resource for us. Finally, just a quick question on the teenagers. That seems like good news. Good news . Its definitely good news. The 12 two 15yearolds, about this variant that has been around, we are seeing younger people go into hospital. We are starting to see teenagers go into hospital. So we need to get them vaccinated. When that happens, if we can get high rates of vaccine coverage, means middle schools, High Schools will be very safe places for the students and for the vaccinated teachers and the staff. And then if we can get a high percentage of both the adolescents and the adults vaccinated overall transmission is going to dramatically decline and thats going to make even the Elementary Schools safe, even though the little kids are not vaccinated yet. Thats good news. I worry about this Red State blue state divide. I dont see a two countries, covid positive and covid negative. Always a pleasure to talk to you. Thank you. Thank you.
