I want to start with the sublime and then well get to Rand Paul. The numbers, to drop below and i remember how it felt in september. We were sort of white knuckled about a potential holiday surge, but we had survived the summer, and we were cautiously optimistic. Do you think we can keep going down . Yeah, i do think that cases are continuing and will continue to go down in the future weeks, nicole, doubledigit decreases, which is great, not to mention, obviously, hospitalizations and deaths going down as well. And i think its because not only have people been getting vaccinated, and we still need to work on that, but youre also seeing that, you know, the restrictions and people wearing masks indoors, we now know so much more about indoor transmission, that that works. So, its great news. Many of us are hoping the cdc will update guidance to start giving People Relief from wearing masks when they dont need to, and that will be getting to those percentages, 60 to 70 of people vaccinated in your community. And i think youre talking about vaccinated people. Let me show you President Biden seeming to hint at the same thing today. Were just getting there now to the degree that i think youre going to see a more aggressive effort on our part to lay out that once vaccinated, its not only you can hug your grandchildren, you can do a lot more. And whether or not you have to have even at some point soon masks inside versus outside. Dr. Patel, it seems like we know, first of all, two things that we didnt know at the beginning of this. Outside is extremely safe, relative to indoors, and that there is a real tension now about making clear that once vaccinated, you can do just about anything, is that right in . Yeah, and i think that the just about anything and youre right to emphasize if youre fully vaccinated, although i will be honest, nicole, its going to be hard to know whos vaccinated and whos not. Were going to have to trust that people selfregulate but youre absolutely correct that life will get a lot more norm. That doesnt mean cases go away, and i think that just needs to be clear, and so if youre like the mom of a Highrisk Child or if you yourself have had an Organ Transplant where we know you dont necessarily have those immune levels that i do, who is healthy, that becomes a risk, and were telling patients right now, you might need to continue to wear masks if you have one of those conditions. So, i think americas just going to have to get kind of comfortable with taking on different levels of risk and thats not something we know how to communicate very well in public health, not something the cdc has communicated well either, and i think thats what youre hearing the president tell governors that the governors are asking for better communication and some hope, and i think bidens responding to that. I want to ask you and i have actually lost the thread on Rand Pauls conspiracy theories, but it seemed to go back to some u. S. Funding for the lab. Is that still i mean, is this battle against disinformation still sort of the last real obstacle to getting to levels of vaccination where were all really safe and protected . Yeah, absolutely. You know, barry did my bio. I worked on the Senate Health Committee when Ted Kennedy was chair and we worked with senator burr. He is what the Republican Party has always been and he even said, with pride, he got vaccinated, kids got vaccinated, grandkids got vaccinated, and he did what i was hoping republicans would do, talk about the value of the vaccine, be a Role Model for anybody who feels like if youre a republican or youre a white male, you shouldnt get vaccinated, and then you contrast that with Senator Rand Paul, which, by the way, hes an m. D. But that doesnt mean he listens to objective facts, and the thread is that there has been Nih Funding that has gone to different labs around the world, including labs in wuhan. What Senator Rand Paul has done now is propagated this crazy myth that the Nih Funding and directly, tony faucis funding, as if he was personally involved, was involved in gain of Function Research where people research viruss and try to understand if those viruses can be more potent in weaponized in some ways. Fauci, thats absolutely never been a shred of evidence linking the two, but its like one of those things, like harry potter, like once you say the name, voldemort, the name that should never be spoken, i think that it and now thats dominating. And so theres richard burr, a senator who actually said and did the right thing, disagree with Someones Policy Point but said and did the right thing as a Role Model crowded out by somebody who i dont even know how he got his medical degree. C. , republicans morphing into an antidemocratic movement that rejects the results of a free and fair election, doubles down on the Big Lie behind the attack on the capitol, and prepares to purge conservative Liz Cheney from their leadership ranks for having the audacity to tell The Truth about the Election Result, that Donald Trump lost to Joe Biden in what Chris Krebs describes as the most secure election in our countrys history. Its easy to think that the gop we see in the national news has reached the bottom of the barrel. That the expulsion of an ultraconservative for bucking the Big Lie and backing a 9 11 Style Commission to focus solely on the attack on January 6th is as bad as it gets. But that would be a rosy view of the state of todays gop. Outside the beltway, the gop is conducting itself as a conspiracydriven, antiscience, antidemocratics force that threatens freedoms and security everywhere from the Voting Booth to the classroom. The Washington Post says, i can only begin to scratch the surface of grassroots republican derangement and extremism. Boot continues with this list. I can mention only in passing that republicans in the Michigan House Of Representatives recently heard testimony on Vaccine Passports from Naomi Wolf who has become notorious for spreading covid19 lies, that the michigan State Republican Chairman referred to democrats as witches and speculated about the assassination of proimpeachment republicans, that one of the leading gop candidates for governor of virginia called the mob that stormed the capitol patriots. The Gop State legislators around the country have praised the constitutional provision that enslaved people would count only three fifths after a person in determining congressional representation and worst of all that gop legislatures are passing legislation to restrict voting in order, ostensibly, to combat Election Fraud, which is not nearly nonexistent and completely inconsequential. And while the gop has huge advantages in state legislatures, they arent stopping there. The Power Grab and Culture Battlefield is now extending to School Boards. Axios is reporting this. Grassroots conservative groups are getting involved in School Board races all across the country, and delaware online adds this reporting, quote, how a rising Conservative Movement in delaware is targeting School Board elections. The conservative group, patriots for delaware, has turned its sights toward School Board seats, endorsing candidates up and down the state with platforms dedicated to hot button issues like fully reopening schools and keeping concepts like Social Justice and lessons about race out of the classroom. Important to couch this extremism in the context of the national appeal of President Joe Biden, who today sits comfortably on a 63 Approval Rating with just 36 of americans disapproving. It is the largest gap between those two numbers since his inauguration. A sign that the biden agenda is even more popular than he is. The radicalization of the gop is where we start this hour with some of our favorite reporters and friends. Tim alberta is here, Staff Writer for the atlantic. His first piece for the magazine appears in the june edition. Also joining us, msnbc contributor, the former congresswoman Donna Edwards is back and David Plouffe is here, former Obama Campaign Manager and an msnbc political analyst. Tim, youve written such incredible stories and done such incredible reporting about whats really happening on the ground. It takes a beat for some of that to filter up but the picture is really alarming and since weve been on the air today, the Arizona Governor has signed into law that states voter restriction law. I wonder where you see this culminating for republicans across the country. Yeah, nicole, its interesting. Last fall, before the election, i traveled around the country recording a pretty big piece about sort of where this was taking us postElection Day and through all of the noise and the fury coming out of the trump campaign, it was apparent then and its all the more apparent now that a lot of the really alarming activity is happening on the ground in these states. I mean, its easy to forget now, but we had a window of time late last year where you had multiple state parties, multiple state republican parties calling for secession from the union, calling for martyrdom In The Name Of President Trump, people like openly saying, id be willing to die for President Trump and his reelection. Are you willing to die . I mean, this is really alarming stuff that was happening, and thats not even getting into all of this sort of smaller, somewhat more conventional battles happening around Ballot Access and everything else, and that is obviously only intensified now with trump out of office, and so many republicans at the local and State Level Feeling like the defining Litmus Test of this era is whether or not they are willing to continue fighting on this idea that the election was stolen and that future elections will be stolen if they do not take sort of sweeping action In The Name Of preventing this mystical Election Fraud that we were told happened in 2020, and that is such an animating thing, down to the grassroots level. I can just tell you, county republican parties, local republican parties, activist groups, this is all theyre talking about now. I mean, the old battles around Healthcare And Spending and even immigration to some extent, theyre virtually nonexistent now or at least they really pale in comparison to the amount of time and Energy And Money being funneled into these fights around voting. Tim alberta, i wonder if you can weigh in on this. I have had this sense since after the election that while trump is no longer the story, the sort of false faith that he spent four years goosing with all the lies, with pitting, you know, any sort of factbased practice, journalism, calling reporters the enemy of the people, scientists, going after fauci and having his own cockamamie solutions like injecting bleach, all of this sort of sciencebased even national security figures, thinking he had his own, you know, powers to deal with North Korea who had vexed american President S for generations. I thought that it was laying the foundation for something more dangerous if and only if republicans refused to sort of condemn the error at the end. Not only did republicans not condemn the Trump Era at the end. Mitch mcconnell and Kevin Mccarthy are the two biggest culprits in the fact that the lie Spread Unabated for three months between Election Day and the insurrection. And i wonder what that felt like and looked like on the ground, and if anyone sees that intersection between the warnings about domestic violent extremism and the current republican Belief System. You know, nicole, its interesting. I said something the other day at a forum that wound up getting a little bit of attention online. I basically said that the defining political challenge of this era is for political leaders and particularly for republican political leaders to summon the courage to tell their constituents what they dont want to hear, and now, there are multiple layers to that, obviously, in the wake of the election, and in the weeks leading up to January 6th, that meant elected leaders in washington at the federal level going back to their districts, going back to their states, and telling their constituents, listen, for all this crap youre hearing on Fox News and that youre reading on your facebook feed, and everything youre hearing from the president , this election was not stolen or at the very least, we have not yet seen any ounce of proof to substantiate these claims that the election was rigged against him, right . And there were a handful, nicole, a handful of republicans willing to do that, but not many. And then when you take it one layer up from there, you know, the constituents of Kevin Mccarthy In The House and of Mitch Mcconnell in the senate are their members in their caucuses, right . Those are their constituents and so just as those members were unwilling to tell their constituents back in their districts but they didnt want to hear, Kevin Mccarthy and Mitch Mcconnell have been unwilling to tell their members in their caucuses what they dont want to hear for the exact same reason, right . Because they understand that if theyre going to, you know, preserve their own careers and preserve their own power and their influence to power and their proximity to power, i should say, they cannot afford to be on the wrong side of what is, again, this just fundamental Litmus Test in the party now and whats interesting is that you saw most mccarthy and mcconnell in the days after January 6th begin to inch out on that limb and distance themselves from the president ever so slightly and ever so strategically. Clearly, there was a belief there for about 48 hours, 72 hours, maybe, that that was the direction the party was going to break in and that if there was ever going to be an opportunity to jump ship and establish this separation from trump, that was going to be it, and then obviously, they were both sort of smacked in the face by the reality of the situation and they were more than happy to go back to accommodating the president , whereas somebody like a Liz Cheney stuck to her guns and now shes facing the consequences for it. And you know, David Plouffe, the reason this matters to all of us, again, im not as interested in the political dynamics, the pressures that Kevin Mccarthy feels, boohoo, who cares. The problem for the country is that this Belief System undergirds a current domestic violent Extremism Threat for all of us, the whole country, and we had a handful of elections speak out, Gabriel Sterling was one of them who was, someones going to get shot. It was eerily prescient. I mean, the insurrection followed. And we have had election officials on this show who are worried about whats happening in arizona. It is a Slowmotion Radicalization Project by gop cowards who as Tim Alberta says spent 48 hours telling The Truth and then got smacked in the head by the political reality. But my question is, when does the Security Reality make more than Liz Cheney and Mitt Romney and Adam Kinzinger tell The Truth . Well, nicole, the cowardice is shameful, so what you have is most republicans right now in elected office would actually choose america losing its democracy over them losing their primary. Thats where we are. And listen. The most important actors, all these republican politics should have more courage on their own, but the people calling the shots here are, you know, Hannity And Carlson and ingraham, murdoch, the folks who run newsmax, breitbart, local tv stations, and they have not changed at all. Theyve been all in on this. They got slapped a little bit by some lawsuits but they really set the conditions and thats what were going to see. Before i get to the violence, on politics, the question will be, you remember at the beginning of the last decade, the 20102012, the Republican Party lost a bunch of senate seats they should have won because christine odonnell, the Famous Witch from delaware, richard in indiana, todd in missouri, these candidates were so far out of the mainstream, they couldnt win in Red States so the question is coming out of these primaries for the House And Senate next year, do you see people who are the darling of the Trump Conspiracy Base but in a Swing District or a Swing State Cant put together 50 of the vote. Lets not forget, theyre falling in line behind a Cult Leader in Donald Trump who ran for president twice and failed to surpass 47 of the vote. This is not a great vote getter. You know, historically. So, yes, i think theyre setting the conditions for violence, of course, because youve got a third of the country, perhaps, whos not going to believe any Election Result other than republicans should never lose elections again, and i dont think thats taking too much liberty with where we are today. So you know, as you and i have talked, this could not be more of an existential threat, and particularly when all these rules are changed. If somehow democrats can still win some of these districts and states, then theyre going to be told, well, weve got to go even further because these are corrupt. So, the cowardice, but really, i mean, it is choosing and by the way, you and i have worked in washington, like being a House Member is not like the greatest job of all time. Yet these people are willing to sink the country so they can keep going to the canada long worth office buildings. Its preposterous. You know, and donna, it, again, everything that tim has reported out is spot on, and all these dynamics that are being set up for the next elections in this country that david articulates is exactly right. But the piece of it that doesnt add up, back to the politics of this, is the current president is sitting at 63 . Hes been there more than 100 days. Its more than a honeymoon. The country is familiar with his policies. There is no Policy Debate around what is just objectively speaking the most transformational agenda in modern history. I mean, the covid Relief Package coupled with the infrastructure plan, coupled with the Family Plan rolled out in the joint address to congress, is sort of this sort of new vision of the role of the federal government in life and there is no answer from the republicans except to purge their ranks of Liz Cheney. What do you make of all the Running Room the president has been given and how that may really aid democrats in the coming midterms in a way that traditionally, a President S Party Isnt aided . Well, you know, i think the answer to that is maybe, and the maybe is that i think, for democrats, its we must, as democrats, focus on, you know, all the way down the ballot, and you can see whats happening from School Board races to other local races that theres a great danger of creating a legacy that will last for a generation if we dont win some of those local elections. And so, i think we cant go to sleep on the fact that the president has, you know, unquestioning, an Approval Rating that is strong, its compelling, he has a governing agenda, but there also is an electoral agenda that has to go forward for 22 and so my worry is that we that democrats, and i mean little d democrats, people who believe in democracy, dont fall asleep between now and then because this cultism has really taken hold and even for republicans who look at President Bidens strong approval also know that in their congressional districts, those challenges, you know, dont exist. It is really clear where people in their district are in terms of supporting the cultism of Donald Trump. And i would only disagree with David On One instance, is that if you believe in democracy, being in congress, being a House Member is a really, really good job and should be an important one for the strength of our democracy, and so i worry that we lose sight of the fact that even if its a third of the country, that third of the country is rabid when it comes to supporting Donald Trump, and they will stop at nothing, clearly, in order to win elections. Tim alberta, along all of those lines, i want to read you something that Kevin Mccarthy wrote in a letter to Republicans Yesterday about the Vote Tomorrow about Liz Cheney. Rewrites, you should anticipate a vote on recalling the Conference Chair this wednesday. We are a big tent party. We represent americans of all backgrounds and continue to grow our movement by the day. And unlike the left, we embrace free thought and debate. Why is he lying . I mean, why not just say, were Ousting Liz because she wont tow the Party Line . If theyre functioning with so much impunity from the top of their political structure, which is the disgraced expresident , to the bottom, which is republicans at the grassroots now looking for bamboo in the 2. 1 million ballots in maricopa county, why lie . Whos Kevin Mccarthy talking to when he says something that even Kevin Mccarthy knows is b. S. . We are, unlike the left, we embrace free thought. Liz Cheney Isnt allowed to speak The Truth. What free thought, other than Marjorie Taylor Greenes whack Job Qanon theories, does the right still embrace . Nicole, i was told a long time ago to never smirk on television, and im just fighting the smirk as hard as i can right now. I mean, how can you not . You can smirk here. How can you not just roll your eyes at Kevin Mccarthy, right . And look, its not to even veer into the Ad Hominem but this is someone who has a history of saying things that dont make an awful lot of sense, even setting politics and ideology aside but this just might get him the blue ribbon. How can you argue, with a straight face, that you are the party of free debate and free ideas when, in fact, there is a pattern now established from Jeff Flake to Justin Amash to mark sanford, bob corker, all the way down to Liz Cheney and in addition to Liz Cheney, some of these other brave, ten house republicans who found the courage to vote for the President S impeachment, they are going to lose their jobs as well, as a result of this. How could you look at that and say we are the party of free thought and free debate . In fact, to your point a minute ago, nicole, the only direction that free thought and free Debate And Tolerance for sort of, you know, dissenting views or fringe ideologies, the only direction that goes in todays Republican Party is toward the far right radicalism of people like, in that case, like a Marjorie Taylor Greene and Matt Gaetz. Those are the people who Kevin Mccarthy is happy to write a Hall Pass for and pat them on the head and say, its okay, buddy, dont worry, youre still a part of the team. But for Liz Cheney to come out and defend the sort of foundations of american democracy, we cant abide that anymore in this Republican Party. I mean, it would be laughable if it wasnt so terrifying. Republican lawmakers bowing at the altar of the Disgraced 45th president would like nothing more than to let the events of January 6th fade from public consciousness and democrats seem intent on holdings people to account and to that end there is new progress in the complicated effort to assemble a commission to investigate. Nbc News Today confirmed an earlier report citing a democratic aide that Speaker Nancy Pelosi has deputized Homeland Security Chairman Benny Thompson to negotiate with his gop congressman, one of the only ten republicans to vote to impeach Donald Trump the second time. Were back with Donna Edwards and David Plouffe. Donna, this feels incremental in terms of process, but we should also remind everyone that Liz Cheneys desire for a 9 11 Style Commission to focus solely on the events of 1 6 is also at the root of the Bus Stop between her and mccarthy. Mccarthy wanting to look at antifa and other groups that had nothing to do with 1 6. What, to you, is going to lead to some sort of breakthrough to get this commission off and running . Yeah, its not really clear to me that this that the idea and the structure of a commission is necessarily going to have strong bipartisan support but i think the hope is that bennie thompson, along with his counterpart, john, are going to be able to come up with the structure so that that can be put to a vote, perhaps as soon as this week or next week in order to move forward on a 9 11 Style Commission. Whether it gets republican votes or not is completely unclear, but at least it would be able to, at some level, kind of move begin to move the process forward. I think its really important, both for the healing of the congress but also for the nation, for us to really understand exactly what happened and what needs to change. You know, the one benefit you know of the 9 11 commission is there were a whole set of recommendations that came out of that process so we can make sure that we at least did what we could to not have another 9 11, and that needs to come out of this process because there are so many things that we still dont know about what took place, what the planning was, and how to move forward from trump and hopefully a commission of this sort would get to that, but its going to be a Slowgoing Process to get something that can pass the house and the senate. And David Plouffe, its worth pointing out that Speaker Pelosi has made big concessions. She has agreed to, i think, which was one of Mitch Mcconnells early objections, an equal divide of republican and democratic commissioners. Shes allowing bipartisan Commission Agreement on any subpoena that the commission wants to issue. But the final Sticking Point is this one piece where Liz Cheney sides with Speaker Pelosi and its on scope, and i wonder what you think is behind this obsession of lumping what Christopher Wray said is not anything on par with rightwing extremism, militias or white supremacy into this investigation into the attack on the capitol. Well, because i first of all, i think Kevin Mccarthy is probably scared of whats going to come out with some of his conversations with trump where he had a momentary few hours where he put the country ahead of his own narrow political interests. But listen, i think they want to confuse the issue here and try and suggest that there was other people involved, but you know, the chief organizer of that event was Donald Trump. His accessories were Josh Hawley and Ted Cruz and Kevin Mccarthy and a lot of members of congress. So their culpability, wed learn more in this commission about some of the involvement with members, with tours and some intelligence given to some of these folks and obviously keeping this in front of the american public is not helpful for the republican enterprise and so theres that is a secondary issue here. If there are political ramifications out of it. But this is one of the more momentous days in american history, not just in recent times, and i agree with donna. We have to learn a lot about what happened so that we can learn how to prevent it. But the big thing we have to do is keep this in front of the american people so they realize we came this close to the capitol not just falling, which it did momentarily, but permanently and basically our democracy being destroyed. I think we may all be surprised, it was may be 48 hours where we thought January 6th was going to put the Big Lie to rest but its only intensified and the democracy is so profound right now, we have to keep this in front of people. And just like the 9 11 commission, i think there was a lot of people that were riveted by what came out of that. I agree with don that. Lets put this to a vote. I think youll have at most maybe a dozen republicans voting to move forward but we have to move forward. These should be primetime hearings. You need to make sure people are exposed to the information that comes out of this and we expose not just what happened on that day. The other thing that just drives me crazy is all these republican politicians want to say, well, of course you want to hold some of the people accountable for the violence that day. They want to duck all accountability, and i think thats where Theccountability Needs to be first and foremost, with those that created the conditions for the domestic terrorism of that day. And i remember that the title on the pdb about Bin Laden and his plans for attacking the u. S. , and i wonder, you know, tomorrow, i believe, the person who was the acting Defense Secretary on the day of the insurrection is going to testify. Hes going to tell congress that he was concerned in the days before the insurrection that sending troops to the building would fan fears of a Military Coup and could cause a repeat of the deadly Kent State shootings, according to a copy of prepared remarks. When do we get to find out what intel the Defense Department had that he was, quote, afraid of the optics of sending troops to the building . I mean, he knew it would be so bad that sending troops was a possibility that he had already moved on to optics and we have all this testimony in this vein of what it would look like, but no ones questioned that more Law Enforcement, more fortification of the building was needed. Part of what the 9 11 commission flushed out was the intelligence products in front of policymakers. When do you think well see everything that was before the president , the Vice President , the Defense Department, the fbi, and all of the people who either through public Source Reporting or their own means knew exactly what was going to happen that day . Well, i think its going to take some time, nicole. I mean, the fact is that we know there were probably memoranda, documents, Phone Calls between and among leaders and those who were supposed to decide whether or not to send that fortification to the capitol, what the requests were coming from the leadership. There are a lot of questions to be answered and i think the good thing about a commission is being able to segregate these pieces of information and figuring out how you piece together that timeline of who knew what and when, and what impact that had on decisions that were made on January 6th, and so i think were going to find out what people knew before January 6th going into that day and also what their reactions were on that day and its going to take us some time to get to that. But i think its possible to get to the answers to those questions, nicole, but only if we take seriously the idea that this is factfinding and truthtelling so that we can prevent it in the future. Its just amazing that this spectacle of Capitol Police officers who are literally the bodies that stood between the insurrectionists and the lawmakers, whose bodies were mutilated and injured and beaten by trump supporters, that that isnt an adequate impetus to just getting the Fact Finding under way and a remarkable failure. While congress grapples with the best way to investigate the January 6th capitol riot, State Legislators around the country have already begun attempting to weed out extremism within the ranks of Law Enforcement. But like those lawmakers on capitol hill, theyre facing strong opposition to the proposals. It raises questions raising from division to constitutional barriers. Various such efforts have been simmering around the country for years. Spurred by fbi reports starting more than 15 years ago that document a concerted effort by White Supremacists and other Extremist Organizations to infiltrate the police. The roadblocks have been tough to overcome. Police officers, like everyone else, enjoy first amendment rights to free speech and free assembly so the challenge for lawmakers is figuring out how to honor those rights while barring extremists from infiltrating the ranks. Clint watts, an msnbc national Security Analyst and distinguished Research Fellow at the foreign policy research institute, someone we turn to for all these conversations. I want to read this scenario in the New York Times because it gives you sort of a practical understanding of how tricky this is, and then well talk it through. The times gives an example from fresno, california. Video surfaced of him supporting the proud boys at a protest. Such ideology, behavior, have no place within Law Enforcement and will not be tolerated. When lawmakers in the state recently proposed legislation to give Police Departments more power to weed out officers with extremist ties, they met resistance. Brian marvel, the president of the peace Officers Research Association of the california said in a statement that the organization supported the idea but not the legislation that was drafted. It would, quote, infringe on a persons individual rights, he said, and possibly prevent someone from becoming an officer based on personal beliefs, religion, or other interests. So, if videos that show a candidate to be a Police Officer or current Police Officer with the proud boys at a protest, if thats not enough to show the association with one of the Extremist Groups, what is . How does this happen . Nicole, its really two parts. One is the breakdown of what is a domestic terrorist organization. It frustrates just about everything that we have going on in the country in terms of our Law Enforcement posture, what we saw going into January 6th, and the Fbi Watch whats going on in Social Media or not. We dont know which are the Extremist Groups theyre allowed to watch. What is private versus what is public continues in that debate. And i can just tell you, nicole, i, for probably 15 years, have taught different Law Enforcement crowds on countering violent extremism and by 2017, 2018, it started to get weird because the breakdown really came on international versus domestic. It was very clear domestic extremism was rising. Classes they wanted classes to be taught, but you literally could not get into them too far because there was a divergence on what Extremist Groups should be policed, even in those classrooms and that really comes down to Donald Trumps ability to politicize Law Enforcement in this country. It was very clear, depending one of the classes i taught was all across the country would send reps into one class, it was a great course, and they were all officers, essentially, from different jurisdictions, brought in to integrate with Each Other and work with Each Other. But who they called an extremist depended on where they were in the country and what information they listened to, and it really came down to the President S rhetoric around antifa. And then i think thats where the problem is today is how would you fairly and judiciously do that around the country, and i would also say that local, state, and City Municipalities are pretty good at policing their ranks over time. I think they do a pretty good job. But in some of the Sheriffs Department where we have what we call the lone sheriffs that are in support of Donald Trump and dont recognize Joe Biden as the president , theres a significant problem. If you were to stumble into that part of the country, they may not work with the fbi or they may not be trusting with the fbi. They may not want to enforce the law as it is designated by state and locals and thats where we get into some real serious problems about Law Enforcement reform in this country. And obviously, Donald Trump, by telling the proud boys to stand back and stand by, made him not just part of their Coalition But Part of his, you know, sort of offensive structure, if you will. He gave them an order. I wonder how long it takes to purge that structure from the sort of Permission Structure of the militias and the White Supremacists and the brazenness with which they may go about defending their associations. Its going to be extremely challenging, nicole. The only thing we have going to our advantage right now is the investigations of January 6th and giving the federal Law Enforcement agencies like the fbi and even some state and local groups the actual evidence needed to go ahead and push that agenda forward, meaning, these people are involved in a crime or supporting a crime, and so that gives you some leads into where you could look. Across the board, when you look around the country, it was almost routine in the last few years to see Law Enforcement officers showing up with three percent patches or some sort of proud Boy Video or qanon patches at different times in terms of conspiracy groups. That was really about allegiance, political allegiance, and how that was blending with Law Enforcement. And i think in some parts of the country, particularly where Donald Trump has lots of support, its going to be very difficult to police that out of the ranks any time soon. Its unbelievable. But what happens with Propaganda And Disinformation is that you take that and fear and you have a toxic room and you repeat it over and over again and people are just fearful and theyre just going to listen to who they think their best messengers are, and so we are seeing, in our polls and other polls, that vaccine hesitancy, you know, is not just you dont just see it in black and brown communities. You see it ideologically, and so we need to try to pierce that misinformation, and i think that one of the ways you pierce that information, look, im a schoolteacher, one of the ways you pierce the misinformation is you try to go into places that people dont expect you to talk and people dont expect to hear from you, and if i changed one Persons Mind that day, you know, even with all the vitriol i got in response, then ive done my job, but thats what we do when we teach. You got to meet fear with facts, and you have to actually do it in a way that people can hear, and thats why i did it yesterday. Well, its such a big deal, and its so easy and much more comfortable to sort of hunker down in your Information Bubble and scream at the top of your lungs to the choir and that you didnt do that is really admirable, especially given how aggressively i dont even know the word for what Tucker Carlson does in the 8 00 hour, but i admire you for doing that and i wonder if you can sort of pull the thread even further for us. What, in your view, does the fall look like for kids in classrooms . Well, so, im doing a big speech on this on thursday where im going to talk about how we reopen, recover, reimagine to create the seeds of a renaissance for public education. And so, the vaccines have been a gameanger. You know, its important. Weve learned a lot in the last 14 months. Weve learned that layered mitigation helps stop the transmission. Weve learned that testing is really important. But vaccines have been the game changer. Science is helping us Trump Covid and President Biden has helped get that science and those vaccines out. So, what i think will happen is we have almost is we have almost 90 of educators in my membership who have either taken the vaccine or want the vaccine. I think that what will happen now that a Pfizer Vaccine will be approved i assume on thursday for 12 to 16yearolds is that thats going to unleash huge freedom for families and for kids this summer. There will be people who have been vaccine hesitant. And part of what my union will do is we will spend a lot of time this summer trying to create the trust that we now have with our membership about opening the schools. 97 of them are now open in person. But we will try to create that same trust for parents. And what do you do to catch up . Are you prepared for all scenarios when kids go back in the classroom, that some kids remote school will have been fine but others will be way behind . Yes. So a lot of that im talking about on thursday. But you have to recover you have so its reopen. But thats only a first step. The second step is you really have to recover academically, socially and emotionally because the social isolation and a trigger from the social isolation can happen almost any time. Thats part of the reason why were thinking we really need to wrap services around schools. Nursing services, psychological services, guidance services. But the other piece you have to do and next year will be a year of recovery. A lot of kids had disruption. Im not using the term learning loss. Im using the term disruption. So you take the entire year and assess who kids are this june and the beginning of september, if you meet kids passion, you can create not only recovery but acceleration.
