How do you do business with a party that doesnt actually believe anything except in the sanctity of donald trump . Thats it. Thats their only belief. Morning joe has an extremely high viewership among members of congress in both parties as far as i can tell. Possibly higher than any other msnbc show because that scheduling works well for them than the Early Morning breakfast hour than they have time to watch and beginning to think about these things and so to an audience that i know for a fact includes republican members of the house, i asked with his Kevin Mccarthy believe . And my answer this morning at 7 am was nothing. Kevin mccarthy believes nothing. And then hours later, Kevin Mccarthy proved that he believes absolutely nothing in the letter he sent to all of that republican members to the House Of Representatives. It goes to the important work we were elected to do and it never identifies a single piece of that important work. A single policy that Kevin Mccarthy and the republicans in the house support. Not one. The only thing on his agenda for the republicans in the house according to this letter is getting rid of liz cheney from the socalled Republican Leadership team. The letter says we need to make a change and as such you should anticipate a vote on calling the Conference Chair this wednesday. The letter is sprinkled with lies like we embrace free thought. We fiercely defend free speech. That is a lie, and that is exactly what Kevin Mccarthy wants to get rid of liz cheney because they do not believe in free speech for republicans in the House Of Representatives they do not believe that anyone who refuses to lie about who won the last president ial election can be part of Kevin Mccarthys socalled leadership team. The letter does contain two honest statements. Quote, our Driving Focus would be taking back the house in 2022. In other words, the people who believe in nothing or trying to accomplish nothing while they take their congressional salary sitting on the republican side of the house representatives and the only Driving Force in their lives is to continue to sit on the republican side of the house representatives. They do not have a single idea or proposal for making any of their constituents lives better in any way. The other true statement and mccarthys letter is we have to seize the future. And he does mean sees. He does not mean when the oldfashioned way by getting more votes than the other side and elections. The new republican Voting Suppression Law and georgia allows the Georgia Legislature to seize the future, to seize an election. And simply overrule the voters of georgia after an election. On wednesday the, same day he wants to vote Liz Cheney Out of that Leadership Position Kevin Mccarthy will be occupying a seat in the oval office in a meeting with President Biden about his infrastructure. Its a Bipartisan Committee with the top four congressional leaders. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Kevin Mccarthy and Chuck Schumer and mitch mcconnell. Never before in history has the chair of the House Minority leader, in the Oval Office Meeting been completely empty of ideas. White house Chief Of Staff kept it simple and direct in trying to reach out to congressional leaders in an interview with axios and hbo last night. I dont think its Big Government to fix the ten bridges in this country that are most economically significant. But here is a part of the package that republicans are talking about. All of them speak for themselves but would im saying is that what were doing is common sense reform. Most of these republicans have stood in front of a rotary club or a coup on his club about how we need to fix our infrastructure. People say we give speeches all the time about how people should have affordable childcare. We are putting forward and again i think they should have bipartisan support. For a party that lies about who won the president ial elections have no problem lying about who got the local bridge fixed after that republican member of Congress Votes against fixing the bridge. Kevin mccarthy will vote against any form of the Biden Infrastructure Bill and take credit for what the bill does which is what he has already done with the biden relief bill. He is taking credit with his constituents for the Restaurant Revitalization Fund and encouraging them to apply for the program created by joe biden which Kevin Mccarthy voted against. Last week, pelosi who will be sitting with Kevin Mccarthy in the oval office next wednesday said this about Kevin Mccarthy. He called the American Rescue plan socialist, claims it would turn the u. S. Into venezuela and convinced every member of his caucus to vote against him. No one should be surprised that mccarthy a man of such strong principles voted no and took the dough with the American Rescue plan. The only question is which parts of the american jobs and families plan will he pick to brag about . Today, joe biden met with the second most powerful guy named joe with the support he needs to pass any version of the infrastructure bill. One West Virginia democrat senator joe manchin emerged from that meeting at the white house, he certainly wanted to sound as if he is in complete agreement with the first president named joe but he didnt want to get into specifics. Can you explain tamir position on being so comfortable with the rate . He understands and hes up on everything. Trust me, he knows whats going on. Hes very well versed in whats going on and he understands. Were gonna make sure where all facing something that happens in our country. The interest smaller package . We dont talk about that. He just knows theres a lot of need out there and it wasnt he had a hes just put his plan out there and i think in good faith will start working and finding out through a process where it goes into the committee, comes to the floor with the amendment and see what we end up with. Jean that walk is one of my favorite kinds of washington interviews because thats a senator who doesnt really want to be talking to the press right now which is why he keeps physically moving to the car but he is also not afraid of dealing with what theyre throwing at him and he also doesnt want to tell them anything about what he and joe biden talked about. Yeah he very confidently refused to answer any specific questions and that was the intention of that when we walked the car and you know, he did but we came to do and he made it down and he move forward with President Biden. Depending and maybe only one bill and only two bills. He didnt really tell us anything about anything except that he likes joe biden and wants the best for him. Jonathan, what i think supports the meeting is that joe biden is making sure that there is no distance at all between joe manchin and joe biden. A lot of times in these situations when there is a kind of tense situation between the senator of the party they are working through intermediaries. They are talking sometimes two other senators and to staff and all sorts of things, this is just joe and. Joe joe is going to hold hands with joe until both shows and up doing the same thing. Right and i took that walk and talk to actually be a good sign and theres been so much attention from the Democratic Party perspective how this roadblock in the president s agenda and i guess on wage were making the people acts and hes always out there to be the first person to say i dont know about with the president wants to do but the joe manchin we just saw said a lot of words and to jeans point, didnt say anything, didnt break any news but what i also noticed was by not saying anything he didnt pour cold water on anything. That was his opportunity to say that the president and i are differing on taxes and i have some issues with the acts and were going to get there. Were going to get there. There was none of that, it was just we had a great meeting and he wants to move forward and wants to do stuff thats great for the country and i actually think that what you just showed there is probably one of the more hopeful things that ive seen in washington when it comes to joe manchin since joe biden was inaugurated president. Jean robinson, Kevin Mccarthy on wednesday is going to we dont know the exact schedule of how its Gonna Roll Out but he might be sitting in the oval office with the president after voting to throw Liz Cheney Out of their socalled leadership because she dares to think that joe biden is the real president of the United States. Yeah, i mean this is a real threat to the country and to the security of this nation, lawrence. The state of the Republican Party i think right now is, as you said, the party that believes and nothing is up for attaining and keeping power. That is all it believes in anymore. The rate party is not the far right party, its not a party at all. It just wants power. Thats all it wants. And that is a terrible situation for the country. So liz cheney is going to be booted out of leadership because she tells the truth. She tells the same truth that Kevin Mccarthy tells on january 6th about the insurrection, about Donald Trumps role in it, because she tells the truth about the election and she cant be in a Republican Leadership. That is just astounding and should be unacceptable to every market. Yeah, thats todays Republican Party its a real danger to this country. Kinzinger is now really fun to watch the republican member of the house because he has crossed this line which you rarely see. You might see it once a decade where a member is just completely fed up and has decided, you know what . Im going to do the most harmful thing i can possibly do. I am just going to tell the truth. I am not going to shade it im not gonna try to protect people so he has that would everyone seeing about donald trump being on the titanic and trying to dress up in women close to try to find a lifeboat and all of that but that was yesterday. Today he just revealed the smoking gun on Kevin Mccarthy for today. Adam kinzinger tweeted, a few days before january six are gop members had a Conference Call that told kellyanne that our partys actions would lead to violence on january six. Kevin dismissively responded with okay adam, operator next question and we got violence. Jonathan that says as much of a smoking gun as you could ask for in terms of what the republicans were leading to on january six. I didnt have Adam Kinzingers foresight to see what they were doing could lead to violence, but it was clear enough and raised to Kevin Mccarthy himself. Yeah, and the fact that Kevin Mccarthy i mean we know leader mccarthy took those words to heart because as you just pointed out, the evening of january six after having survived the insurrection, he took to the well of the house and said the president s responsible, this is his fault, this was a bad day, yeah yeah data. But then a week later, he goes to kiss the ring of donald trump and has been there ever since. Lawrence, you put your finger on it at the very beginning. Kevin mccarthy believes and nothing. His only priority is to gain power and everything that you watch him do that we will watch him do since he reneged on his january 6th comments right through the 2022 election will be about winning enough seats to take the speakers gavel from the democrats. That is all he cares about and nothing else matters. And that is why were not seeing anything from the republicans in terms of any substance to what the president is proposing. And the Republican Party base and stocks fear and anger and the other meanwhile President Biden is doing the things that the country desperately needs and its got the poll numbers and in the Washington Post yesterday, i dont know if you saw but theres a story about a thing that really ticked liz cheney off and it was that the retreat where she discovered that the nrcc, the Republican Campaign Committee Left out some key data points from the presentation to the members of congress. And what were they . Donald trump is less popular than joe biden or President Biden. Less popular than Vice President harris. And less popular than the American Rescue plan. I mean, think about that. And they left that out. They dont care about anything. And the poll was in the Battleground Districts that they have to win. It was in the crucial swing districts. A new law assigned by georges republican governor has reversed a ban on accepting Campaign Contributions from lobbyists during the legislative session. The Atlanta Journalconstitution reports the law also allows new committees backing Camps Reelection in those of legislative leaders to raise and spend unlimited contributions from builders essentially circumventing current limits on how much individuals special interest and businesses can give to candidates. Brian kemp already signed a Voter Suppression bill into law that makes it a crime to distribute water to voters while waiting in line to cast their ballots. Sometimes for hours. Today georgia senator jon ossoff announced a bill that would prohibit states from banning the distribution of food and water to voters waiting in line to vote. Its intended to be an amendment to the senates Voting Rights bill which will begin markup tomorrow in the senate rules committee. Senate majority leader Chuck Schumer will both attend the mark up which is very unusual for leaders to do. Here is what Senator Schumer had to say today. We know our republican counties dont like every aspect of this but will they work in good faith to improve it . Will they offer revisions are new ideas to protect Voting Rights or through uncompromising resistance to common sense for protections . Will they side with legislatures across the country that are restricting the Voting Rights in a way that hurts african americans, latinos, younger in poor americans. The choice is theirs. Joining us now is latosha brown, cofounder of black voters matter fund. Latosha, thank you for joining us. Were going to talk about the georgia situation in a moment but i have to say, listening to Senator Schumer ive never had less Suspense Listening to senator ask what they might do. Hes asking will republican senators in washington support whats going on in georgia and other states around the country where republican State Legislatures are restricting Voting Rights as much as they pop possibly can . I dont think thats a very suspenseful question at this point. It shouldnt be. Its really a shame where we are, lawrence. I think when we think about whats happening while there is one three big pieces. One is certainly an attack on democracy. I think we have to look at what republicans are seeking to do. I do think this is around being hungry for power. The second thing i think we have to recognize is that republicans have to legalize corruption. The bottom line is what they would like to do is really be able to be right with democracy is that essentially democracy can only be a sure group of people who will support them have some kind of advantage over being able to vote for an election so in many ways, but theyre trying to do is to legalize corruption. Its very simple that when we look at other countries around the world, when they change the rules and those rules actually work for their benefit. When the president of a country decides hes gonna change the constitution so in fact that he has an advantage when we call that corruption . But here we are in the United States where there is a Political Party that is not operating in the goodwill of democracy but theyre creating also that they would had an advantage. That is the true definition of corruption. I think the third piece to is also around what were seeing around structural racism. That fundamentally, what we know is that this is a punitive measure of historical black in the state of georgia and to punish black voters to pass this legislation and so were going to have to have federal protections to make sure that voters all across this nation are protected and that the foundation of our democracy is not only protected but we have the strength. Im struck by a couple of things about this new Campaign Finance law that the governor is supporting in georgia. This notion that in the past and georgia they have banned fundraising during the legislative session by state legislators. The seems to be something that they did primarily just because it would not look good. Because surely, you could structure your campaigns and contributions from lobbyists around the legislative calendar so you would be able to get enough of your contributions from lobbyists, especially the ones who are basically serving in the legislature has been any of these republican members are. But now they dont even care how it looks. Theyre saying, we dont care that it looks bad. That were going to make it legal to raise money from lobbyists on the same day that they are asking us to vote a certain way and the legislature. Absolutely. Thats why were saying we have to call this out for what it is. This is corruption. There is a Political Party that is in this country that is decided. They are going to throw everything on the wall and whatever sticks, theyre gonna go with it. Even when you look at what happened and were talking about finance, this wasnt really based on a value system they had. You know, this is literally based on what it was a perception. And so not given the opportunity, a bill that was supposed to be providing extra security which we all know thats a farce. Here it is and use it as an opportunity to be able to back the offers and use it as an opportunity to be able to take the money. Use it as an opportunity to get themselves in the party in advance. On the other thing is, this limit on individual donors. Georgia already has a very high limit of 18,100. 18,000 dollar limit for individual donors. The federal limit is 50 800. Its really half that in the sense that the 58 Hundred Dollars if you contribute in general and the federal limit and senator member of congress. In georgia, you can go up to three times that already and now the governor wants that unlimited. I mean, lets just think about it. It is what it is. If it looks like a, duck quacks like a duck, its a duck. The bottom line is, this is corruption. They are literally trying to use the administrative process to give themselves an advantage. Disenfranchise and martialized voters and what were looking at some of the egregious things that theyre doing towards Voter Suppression then facts trying to figure out ways that they can actually put unlimited amount of money so they dont have a sense of accountability and they are literally at a power grab. So we have to call this with this is. We have to literally make sure that we have to monitor what is happening on the local level, state level, and spend production on the federal level. Talk about what your seeing, and not seeing, and not being allowed to see and what you are now calling a fraudit. Thank you very much for that term. I couldnt bring myself to call it an audit. I decide to be creative. It certainly is not an audit. I think one of the most concerning things about what we have not been able to see, and this is one of our Election Experts susan equipment expert. He was not allowed into the room where they were doing equipment. Neither have there been any of the cameras that are broadcasting this exercise, allowed in that room. We have no idea whats been then with the equipment. We certainly have seen many concern concerning things done with the ballots as you have seen. One of the arizona senators voted for this, paul boyer. He said in the new york times, it makes us look like idiots. Look like idiots secretary hobbs, it sounds like he was prepared to deal with some level of ridiculous, but this is beyond that. You know also have the threat of a possible subpoena by the Senate Republicans trying to obtain internet routers, Government Internet Routers that they believe somehow would help inform that. What is that about . Yeah, thats a good question. Im not really sure what its about. Something about passwords. I dont know why you would find the passwords from the routers, but these are routers that serve entire county of maricopa county, which is their largest county. One of the largest in the company. It would impact operations for the entire county. It would impact Confidential Health departments. Confidential law import informant data, it is beyond ridiculous that they think theyre entitled to these routers. Going forward, last week the idea was there was a Huskily Graduation coming up, and thats what the building has to be used for, i believe as early as next week or next weekend. Have they come up with some plan to deal with the High School Graduation that could get in the way of theyre playing with the ballots . As far as i can tell, there is no plan for what they will do. They keep saying we will store these things somewhere, but there is really no sense of where that is. I dont think he has a plan. Nothing that is being talked about right now in terms of wet may or may not be, adds any confidence to my sense that they are not taking Ballot Security seriously at all. I will point when federal authorities want to be present to whats happening here. I cant speak to their intent on when they might actually send observers out or what the legal parameters are for them to do that, but they certainly did see shared their concerns about the Document Preservation where it comes to federal laws and ballot retention for federal elections. Certainly, none of the parameters of the federal law have been taken into account here. I am extremely glad that they spoke up about their concerns. Thei have no sense that the see or cyber ninjas are taking these concerns seriously. As you go forward, what are your biggest worries about whats happening their day today, with those ballots. Well, i mean, you talked a little bit about this in your intro. They are not taking Chain Of Custody seriously. This means, when theyre Unboxing Ballots to do whatever they are doing to the ballots and then putting them back, they are not making sure they get pushed back in the same place. If somebody actually had to go in and do a real recount for whatever reason, they wouldnt be able to do that, because the Chain Of Custody has been damaged that much. It also appears as if they are putting counted versus uncounted ballots, they are leaving ballots unattended on tables.
