Squad where were just attacking members of our own party instead of focusing on solving problems or standing up and having an argument that we can debate the democrats on some of the things that the biden administration is pushing through. This morning on cbs, republican congressman adam kinzinger, who voted to impeach trump, like cheney, compared the republican party to the titanic, a ship that is sinking fast. Right now, its basically the titanic. Were like in the middle of this slow sink. We have a Band Playing on the deck, telling errand its fine, and meanwhile, as i said, Donald Trump is running around trying to find Womens Clothing to get on the first life boat. Joining me now, oliver knox, a national correspondent for the washington post, and anchor of the daily 202. Also with us, democratic strategist juanita tolliver. Oliver, Liz Cheneys Decision not to peddle Donald Trumps lies have put her at odds with her own party. It might feel like a shift within the party. Does it feel that way to republicans . Well, i dont know that it does. Youre right, it certainly does feel like a shift. If you had gone back to 2006, you would find Liz Cheney, the doth of Vice President dick cheney, and you would see Elise Stefanik, who had gone from harvard to the west wing, and you would say these are two people who represent the core of the establishment of the republican party. Now, today, obviously, theres a fight inside the republican party over which one of these people will represent them. One of the most important things Liz Cheney is doing right now, one of the reasons shes likely to get pushed out this week, is shes making it harder for republicans to pursue their extremely consequential Postelection Project of getting legislation passed in several dozen states to impose new restrictions on voting in those states. When Kevin Mccarthy talks about moving forward, when other republicans talk about, well, she keeps talking about the past, thats a nonsense argument. The former president is constantly talking about the election. And republicans nationwide, Coast To coast, in more than three dozen states, are also talking about the past. Theyre talking to the future elections as well, but the idea that this is all about moving forward, that doesnt wash. It doesnt. Should we be watching for any lastminute dynamics that could change Cheneys Fate or is this a done deal . Well, you know that back in february, she survived easily an effort to push her out. One of the most interesting aspects of this is selected by secret ballot. Well be watching to see what the vote for the final Vote Tally looks like, to get a better sense of just how divided republicans really are. Again, she won easily more than 2 to 1 margin last time around. It will be interesting to tally the votes again this time. Right, to see if that has shifted. Juanita, its not just Liz Cheney that trump is after. Politico is out with a new piece examining Trumps Disdain for the gop establishment, particularly political dynasties. Whether its the cheney, the bushes, or the lesser Blood Lines like the romneys or murkowskis, trump has been relentless in his efforts to force them to bend the knee. Even cindy mccain, who herself has never run for office, has been knocked down, censured by trump allies who run the republican party in arizona. What do you make of Trumps Disdain for these political dynasties, families that once defined the gop . Alicia, its like Game Of Thrones. There can only be one king here, and trump is saying thats going to be him. What is his response but to make sure those other dynasties, as you said, those political dynasies no longer exist. Hes not going to hold back. Hes going to stay on this and Mow Down anyone who gets in hipath, whether thats through primary challenges, whether its through callouts like we have seen with this statements related to cheney, or whether thats him actively siccing his reporter on these individuals. I dont expect that to stop anytime soon. We know they love this. This is a Blood Bath for them that theyre willing and ready to take part in. Its something he feels a sense of power, even though hes banned from Social Media right now, hes flexing this muscle, showing im still present, im still here, and that goes into the logic behind seeing someone like cheney removed from her leadership position, the logic behind someone like mccarthy saying he wholeheartedly supports stefanik, who we know in stefaniks perspective, shes there to be a team player, to say whatever trump wants to say. Were going to loop back because i want to know who are the white walkers in your Game Of Thrones analogy. Senator Lindsey Graham says the gop has to embrace trump to gain control of congress. Part of what you were saying. This morning, Senator Bill Cassidy argued the party needs Liz Cheney too. Take a listen. For us to win in 2022 and 2024, we need everybody. We need those who feel as liz, we feel those who feel as lindsey. Ultimately, its about the policies. You see that cheney, cassidy support those policies. Those policies are a ticket to victory, and those policies are the ones that bring us back in 2022. Oliver, what i think i have from that is policies loosely defined as some sort of economic policies and an embrace of trump is the winning equation for republicans according to cassidy, but to come back to your point, and embrace of trump means never reckoning with the Big Lie, actually using it to push Voter Suppression efforts across the country, so can you really then embrace both these economic policies and trumps Big Lie and expect to somehow move forward . Well, i think the Followup Question to Senator Cassidy is which policies. What were seeing as a united force is opposition to joe bidens proposals. The simple math, the simple political reality is when youre in the minority In The House of representatives, your life sucks. You cant set the agenda. Its hard. I mean, you laugh, but its true. Its a terrible place to be. Thats part of why Liz Cheney is not going to be heartbroken if shes voted out of house conference chair, which is kind of a Nightmare Job when you dont have the White House. Youre herding cats. Its a cliche. Youre herding cats. Youre putting frogs in a wheelbarrow, whatever Urfavorite Analogy is for the impossible task, but one of the reasons i think shes not going to be heart broken is its a grim job, a tough job. When youre In The House, its difficult to get your policies forward. It might be easy for Senator Cassidy to talk about that because of course, in the senate, especially in a 50 50 senate, what republicans think about policy matters an awful lot. It might not matter as much as a couple centrist democrats want, but it matters a lots. To the core of your question, sure, trump energizes the republican base. Like nobody else, right . And in an era in which one of the most important dinadges in politics is the rate of reelection of House Members, if youre a republican House Member right now, today, youre not really worried about the general. Youre worried about the primary. And that means if someone can outtrump you, youre in political jeopardy. Thats an incredibly important dynamic. Lets pick up off what oliver said, because i think that has a corollary for democrats too. If all of the republicans are focused on their premary, if thats their major concern, what does that mean for democrats as they watch all of this play out . Watch republicans making their decisions predicated on what could or could not happen to them in a future primary . Look, for democrats, i think the play for them is, stick to the legislation. Stick to the tangible benefits youre delivering in partnership with the White House to americans because we saw, i think, the recent polling out of the rnc showed that bidens policies are more popular than trump. People value them. People feel the benefits. People are appreciative of them, and people support them. And Thats Something that i think democrats should be focused on throughout the midterm because these tangible impacts, whether its related to covid, whether its related to future plans around infrastructure or the families plan, they have legs. And Thats Something that democrats must continue to tout. I think in the same vein, emphasizing the fact that republicans are not voting for any of this, emphasizing the fact that republicans are sitting on their hands when this country is in perpetual crisis, as well as the fact that they have become the party who really amplifies conspiracy theorists. They amplify trumps lies. I think theres going to be a mixed bag that democrats can throw out that are going to fully resonate with voters in districts in the leadup to the midterms. Especially because it underlines the fact this is no longer about ideology. Theyre not talking about who is conservative enough, who has the right policy agenda. This is about one issue, which is fealty to the former president. Elise stefanik has support from leadership to replace Liz Cheney. Washington Post Opinion Columnist Greg Sargent is out with a new article about her qualifications for the job. He writes her credentials are most obviously her unwavering loyalty to Donald Trump and his Big Lie about the stolen 2020 election, but another crucial credential, one getting less attention, is stefaniks willingness to deceive her own constituents to justify taking official action to invalidate legitimate election results. I mean, it does seem to me that it is worth teasing apart the difference there. Theres loyalty to Donald Trump, and theres also what it means for the future of our democracy to continue to double down on the lies from the former president , and then to begin to try to enact policy across this country predicated on those lies. Its not just about loyalty. Its also about ones forward looking idea of what our democracy can and should look like. Sure, and the shape of this next election, the shape of the midterm elections, the shape of the next president ial election, the fights going on in state after state after state, again, as i said, its enormously consequential and im reluctant to say its not policy. How we conduct our elections is policy. It might not be as pointed a policy as federal assistance on child care, but its important. Every outlet has reported that when it comes to voting with Donald Trump, Liz Cheney voted with the former president more often than Elise Stefanik has. I think thats also fairly important, as we go forward. We cant forget, of course, that Liz Cheney in the Obama Era was as eager a republican warrior as there were out there, branding his policies socialist, vowing to defeat him. Of course, her father, the former Vice President , had a lot of language about youre either with us or youre with the terrorists. So again, shes not shy about getting into these fights, but at the moment, because they dont have the White House, because they dont have the house, and because the senate has that narrow margin that still helps the democrats, youre not seeing quite as much policy coming forth, although in the senate, youre starting to see republicans push back on here is our idea for infrastructure, heres our idea for how to fund infrastructure. Youre seeing some policy base. You teed me up perfectly because were going to talk about infrastructure next. Coming up, bidens next attempt find bipartisanship. It is going to be a tough sell. The president wants to pay for the plan by raising the corporate Tax Rate, going into the meeting, republicans remain adamant no new taxes. But reaching a deal is only half the battle. Because the administration will then have to figure out how to spend the money on time and on budget. Juanita tolliver is back, and joining the conversation, national political reporter, sahil kapoor. President biden has his first former meeting with top congressional leaders, pelosi, mcconnell, schumer, mccarthy, theyre going to be here. What is the president hoping to get out of the meeting . The meeting of the socalled big four. The Top Leader of each party in each chamber. They want to have a conversation about how to restore trust among americans in government and make sure government can deliver for people. The translation of that is they want to talk about the president s infrastructure and jobs and Safety Net poll. Its about 4 Trillion in new spending that hes putting as a high, high priority. There are other issues like Police Reform and gun control, but he wants to drive the car when it comes to infrastructure. What hes going to look for of whether theres a sense of a deal to be struck among republicans. Many democrats are highly skeptical of this. Talk to different sources and theyll say different things. There are White House sources i have spoken to who say its too soon to know whether republicans are going to or not going to come on board a deal, and there are progressives who are pretty convinced that republicans wont. But theyre happy to see biden trying so he can, in the words of one person, get caught trying and say he at least made an attempt to get bipartisan support. Juanita, listen to what commercerumundo said about his plan. The reality is, they knew increased corporate taxes were coming. And i have been very pleased by how many ceos have come out to support the president s plan. So listen, there will be room for compromise, for sure. And the president will be meeting with members of congress this week, hoping to find compromise. So the question i have, juanita, is how republicans can continue to use their faux Populist Frame while also arguing against an increase in corporate taxes. Easily, its what they have done for years, alicia, right . We know this is something that republicans have really had a feather in their cap about being able to lower and reduce corporate taxes, lower and reduce taxes for wealthy individuals in this country, and its something that they have never made any intentional effort to hide, even while saying that democrats are ruining the country and not investing enough in the public. So what we should expect is more of the same. Theyre going to keep putting out that conflicting messaging because they want to keep their donors happy. They want to keep corporations happy, because we know that is a big source of finances in their fundraising. So what i expect is them to keep hitting that drum beat. I also expect them to throw out a counternumber, even though caputo did say their counter is on the table, and thats a Starting Point for discussions with biden into the next week, she said it wasnt their final offer. So im curious to see what that will be. What will republicans actually put out on the table to bring that corporate Tax Rate down . Because we know that biden is open to compromise, and there is no secret about his desire for this to be bipartisan, but what i do hope is democrats are organizing within their caucus to be prepared to move ahead alone if it comes to that. Sahil, i would love to know what you hear about that based on your reporting, but you wrote a great piece we mentioned in the intro about how getting this plan passed is just the 1st Hurdle for President Biden and actually spending it will be a whole other challenge. Can you talk us through that . Its the big underappreciated component. Its implementation. Its one thing for congress to say yes, mr. President, you can spend these multiple trillions of dollars on infrastructure, but actually doing it in a way that is quick, that is efficient, that gets the job done, and makes people see a quick and tangible benefit in their lives is much, much harder. Take something like shovel ready pr projects, a term well hear over and over again. Theyre easier to get going, but if President Biden wants to do this Fdr Style of transformative projects, he has to do more than shovel ready project, and those are tougher to get off the ground. Hell have to anticipate pushback from local communities when trying to upgrade the electrical grid. Theres the human Infrastructure Component where there are some potentially conflicting objectives. He wants to boost access to Elder Care while also paying caregivers more. Those are difficult to do at the same time. There are a host of things on the Implementation Side that the biden administration, according to the many people we have talked to for the story, are talking about and anticipating, and one of the key sets of people well be looking at here in terms of who drives this train is senators like Mark Warner and john hickenlooper, who have served as governors and can see based on their own experiences what the Implementation Hurdles of this package will be. So far, they say theyre quite happy with how the administration is handling it. I Cant Help but hear the number of times you have said there is someone driving a car or a train. You clearly have infrastructure on the brain. Thank you both. Next, did the state of arkansas put a man to death for a Crime he did not commit . New Dna Evidence begging that question. Did they put a man to death for a murder he did not commit . Ledell lee was executed in 2017 for murders 26yearold Debra Reese inside her home in arkansas just east of little rock. Since his arrest in 1993 until his execution in april 2017, lee maintained his incense. His first trial resulted in a hungiary. The second trial resulted in the Death Penalty. The Aclu And Innocence project filed suit against the City Of Jacksonville to release dna and fingerprints from the Crime scene. Turns out, dna found on the handle of the club used to Kill Reese belongs to someone else. Its not enough to clear Lees Name, but it certainly creates reasonable doubt. While its too late for lee, his story and his case reignited debate over Capital Punishment in this country. Joining me now, activist, author, and Death Row Survivor Damian Echols. An unjection. back as promised with Damian Echols of the West Memphis Three. Governor hutchinson was asked about the new developments in the case of ledell lee. Here he was friday. How do you feel now about your role in this egcushion . Whenever you make tough decisions, whenever you have to carry out the decision of a jury, you realize that its been reviewed by the Supreme Court at every level. They affirmed the convictions, and its my duty to carry out the law. The evidence obviously that was uncovered is inconclusive, and the fact is that the jury found him guilty based upon the information that they had. Damien, i want to hear about your personal conversations with lee in a moment, but first, i would love your thoughts on what the governor had to say. Well, you know, in one regard, i think he is right whenever he says that its his job. Its part of his Job Description to carry out these executions. But i always, i guess, find It Kind of horrifying just that part of Someones Job is to carry out bringing death to citizens of the united states. Basically murdering people in some cases. So he is right that its his job, but its kind of unfortunate that its anyones job. Damien, as you tweeted recently, you were on Death Row for nearly two decades, and for two years, urcell was next to ledell lees. Tell us about your conversations with him, about his case, and his hopes that his innocence might one day be proven. He really did honestly believe to the core of his being that eventually, he would be proven innocent. You know, any time we talked about his case, he never expressed, like, even the vaguest, the foggiest notion that a day would come whenever he was executed. I think he really did believe that somehow, someway, this information was going to come out before it got to this point. Heres a statement from lees sister, patricia, which reads in part, what happened to Debra Reese is horrible, and we keep her family in our prayers. But i was with ledell on the day this murder happened and i do not see how he could have done this. If ledell is innocent, then the person who did this has never been caught. All i want is to finally learn the truth. From your vantage point, what does justice look like here . Can there be justice in a case like this . No, absolutely not. You know, i think, you know, even maybe his name could be cleared, but thats still not going to bring justice. You know, justice would imply that things were made even, made right, and he can never be brought back from the dead. The person who was murdered that he was charged with their murder can never be brought back. So i really dont think that there is any such thing as justice in the case like this. The best that can possibly be hoped for is that the person who actually did it is caught and ledell Lees Name is eventually cleared. There, of course, are going to be those watching who hope to prove their own innocent. I know for you, a huge source of support came from the outside, came through your wife. I wonder what your personal experience has taught you about how to maintain that faith. Honestly, for me, it was just the fact that i knew that so many people out here were following the case, so many people knew about it. I honestly believe that if not for that fact, i would also be dead right now. I believe the state would have murdered me and swept it under the rug. And went on with business as usual. The only thing that saved my life was that people out here knew about the case and were watching it. And really, when it comes down to it, thats the only thing that the politicians who preside over this sort of Thing Care about, the fact theyre being watched and it may influence the way the next election goes. There is a major conversation being had in this country right now about criminal Justice Reform. A lot has focused on policing. Thats of Course Part of a much larger conversation. In light of these recent developments, in light of your own experience, where do you see that fitting in to this broader conversation about what Justice Reform needs to look like in this country . Well, you know, this is something that hits really Close To Home for me. And a lot of the people that are involved with fighting the Death Penalty and making sure innocent people dont get executed, theyre estimating now as many as 1 out of every 10 people who are executed, put to death, are innocent. In arkansas, i was to the state of arkansas, the number i was given when i arrived on Death Row was sknigh 31. The 931st person sentenced to death in arkansas. Now, they have probably reached over 1,000, so if youre talking about 1,000 people, on average, at least 100 of those that the state has put to death have been innocent. Something needs to be done in some way to stop this. You know, its not a onetime thing. This happens all the time. This is nothing out of the ordinary. Donald trumps war with big tech is far from over, as hes working to climb his way back into the public sphere, were learning the impact of his Social Media ban. Business insider reports trumps Social Media mentions dropped 91 since big tech deplatformed him. But a new Nbc Poll out today shows Social Media without trump doesnt bring us more together. 64 of americans say Social Media does more to divide us. And more than one in three daily Social Media users says sites like Facebook And Twitter make their life worse. Joining us now to discuss politics and Social Media, Nbc Reporter ben collins. Ben, i want to start with the Facebook Oversight boards ruling to make facebook decide on its own about the status of trumps accounts. The cochair spoke on Fox News this morning. Take a listen. We gave them a certain amount of time to get that get their house in order. They needed some time because their rules are a shambles. Theyre not transparent. Theyre unclear. Theyre internally inconsistent. So we made a series of recommendations about how to make their rules clearer and more consistent. And the hope is that they will use the next few months to do that. Understanding that one of the critiques there was just lack of clarity and transparency, do you have any insight on how facebook plans to review this matter on their own now . Its look, thats a really good question. Thats the overarching problem here, is that the rules dont apply the same to everybody. And you know, one of the big rules they made over the last few years was Thats Part of the new rules, is that the rules dont apply the same to everybody. Politicians get more leeway because theyre in the public interest. For some reason if youre in the public interest, you can say some horrific stuff on facebook and get away with it. And this board said, like, that can be your rule, but even that is unevenly enforced. So in six months, we will they will hopefully come back with some harder and Faster rules. Basically, this court, which is what it is, this moderation court, said you want us to be the Supreme Court without a constitution. Come up with a constitution first, and then we can adjudicate who these laws apply to, basically. So all of this is relevant because it is shaping public opinion. Republicans often argue facebook is censoring republican opinions. Im going to pull up this tweet from a New York Times tech columnist. Nine of the top ten performing link posts on friday were from conservative voices. How does Facebook Shape the views of those that might not get news from Traditional Media . Yeah, look. Facebook, as you can tell by that, not just that graphic, but the one you put up before where it says its dividing us more than ever. Facebook silos you. It puts you into an idealogical basically like a Filter Bubble is what it used to be called. And it makes it so people who you disagree with, you dont really see whats going on with them. You dont see what theyre saying or how they view things. You just learn to be angry at them. Thats what we saw in the 9 out of 10 posts. Those are hyperpartisan pages. Thats what those sites are made to do, made to get you angrier so you come back tomorrow to get more things to get you even angrier. Thats a problem that the Oversight Board actually talked about. One of the recommendations, a long ruler, the Top Line of the ruling is the thing that got the headlines, but in the bottom of the ruling, they said pretty explicitly, you know, you ought to look into why one guy has so much power and why that one guy appears to be the most inflammatory person in that platform. Why is he the most powerful person . You have to look into it. That Person Kind of returned to Social Media this week in the form of blogging, next hes going to start a friendster account. I just, what do you make of the fact that blogging is now the tool hes using to get his message out to his followers . Well, you know, a lot was made out of how Donald Trumps been banned from all these platforms. Censored and silenced. He can put whatever he wants on the internet. Thats very proven by the blog you can see right there. You know, you can see all the stuff that he those are very long tweets, basically. You can tweet those posts. You can personally independently put those up for him. You know, a lot has been made out of what is called deplatforming. What is called Social Media censorship, but theres no stopping this. He can do whatever he wants. And i think hes learning this lesson now, and people are learning this, too. He has the power to post whatever he wants. The people are going to screen shot those posts. And were going to be living with this forever. This is the Way Life is. This is how freedom of speech works. You can say whatever you want on the internet. Some companies arent going to be cool with you posting it on their massive mega phone. All that is true, and at the same time, i return to those numbers, ben, about how all of this Social Media is making people feel. And i do wonder, and i realize this is an impossible question to truly answer, but at what point we hit a Breaking Point where we say, if its dividing us and not bringing us together, if we use these services and we walk away feeling worse about ourselves and our lives and the world we live in, at what point there begins to be a Mass Exodus from these platforms. I think that, alicia, if you have ever handled people who are Cigarette Smokers in your life, i had several grandparents who died of Lung Cancer because of cigarette smoking, every day, they said, oh, man, i hate this. This is awful. Its bad for my grandchildren, but they kept smoking. Thats what we have here. We have an addictive thing that does something to our brain. It gets us angry and it gives us identity. You cant just strip that away from people willynilly. Its going to be very hard for people to change their habits. Hopefully when the world opens back up, gets people outside and doing stuff that want to do again. We were locked inside for a year there, but over the next few months, maybe if there is some real corrective action that comes from just being outside, maybe that can show people, you know, we dont have to hate each other all day long. We dont have to scroll through and find the next thing to be angry about. Thats what these services exist to do. All right, ben collins, thank you, as always. Aprils jobs report underwhelming, 266,000 jobs were added to the economy, short of the predicted 1 million. Heres how President Biden responded. Its the american rescue plan. I want to remind everybody, it was designed to help us over the course of a year, not 60 days. A year. We never thought that after the first 50 or 60 days everyting would be fine. Young adults continue to be particularly hard hit. College age americans experiencing almost double the unemployment rate. One experts says the setbacks are a chance for millennials and gen zers are redefine success. Joining me is the author of an ordinary age, finding your way in a world that expects exceptional. Indeed it does. Im very excited to talk to you. Very excited about this book. According to pew research center, Two Thirds of Unemployed Americans have considered switching careers during the pandemic. How has covid led Young Americans to rethink their relationship to work . Thank you so much for having me. I think first and foremost, were in a position where we need to reassess both how we define ourselves out of work and what resources people need, including young people, to live safe, stable, fulfilling lives regardless of their labor how we think about work because our lives and experiences arent separate from the economy and structural context in which were living. Add that together and you have mounding expectations with diminishing resources and puts young people in a position where a lot of them no longer want work to define their identity. They want rich stable secure lives to bring that to themselves and communities. There is this Stereo Type of millennials taking longer than usual to marry and have kids and buy a house. There are a number of issues of that that doesnt get to systemic issues you laid out including of course including the burden of college debt. At the same time, research shows even when i just laid out isnt quite right because young adults in the 1950s were the out liars. Todays youth reached the markers of adulthood on remarkably similar timelines to the youth of a century ago. How were these myths affecting Young Americans . I think what we fail to look at is we divide young adulthood into silos. We think of everyone as a carefree 20 something and ignore the privileges or pressures some of us might be facing including young adults that took on adult roles. We also have some experts say these traditional markers of adulthood like moving out of your parents home have changed. This generalization of Being Lazy Of Unmotivated is tangible changes to the world they are living on and how connected that is to capitalism and who has the resources to meet those milestones in the first place. The ceo of Tractor Supply says millennials are leaving big cities behind. Take a listen. We look at the mobility and we see millennials leave the city and move rural and were seeing a revitalization of rural led by millennials leading in Home Purchases in rural areas and forming households and adopting pets. I wonder first if that tracks with your research and in general, when you look at the portability of this generation and where they are choosing to lay their roots, what is driving that . In terms of people i spoke to a couple things were driving that. First, where can they find a job to begin with and where they have the social support in the community to thrive. This hyper Individual And Selfreliance to make on your own, we need communities and we need to feel supported and safe in the spaces theyre in. I dont have data whether young adults are moving to a certain city over another, what i do know is a lot of them are prioritizing where they can find safe, affordable housing or find a job with a Living Wage and where they feel supported and secure in their communities. Well be talking about that question of housing in the next hour. The book is an ordinary age. Thank you so much.
