The Oversight Board deciding to keep him banned from platforms. They say the tweets from january 6. President trump responded calling it a disgrace and embarrassment. And a Skating Review from former attorney barrs actions. It says documents revealed he never intended to prosecute trump regardless of the findings. He released a fourpage letter on the Mueller Report weeks before. And a judge is asked to appoint a Special Master about products taken from Rudy Giulianis home. We begin with Rudy Giuliani and my exclusive interview with a long time ukraine adviser. He was listening in by Speaker Phone for a stunning request to investigate joe biden and the claim that ukraine, not russia was responsible for the camp. What did you hear Rudy Giuliani saying to the president s top adviser . He wanted two things. Basically it was all about a Smear Campaign on candidate biden, joe biden. Basically, first request was multiple investigations. He wanted investigation. He wanted the situation with the exprosecutor general investigated. And he was especially interested in getting ukraine make a Public Statement and possibly back it up, this crazy allegation that it was ukraine, not russia that meddled in 2016. Which is ridiculous, but thats what he wanted. He wanted the president to blame ukraine for the Hacking Investigation on the Democratic Party in 2016. Exactly. This call to the president s adviser comes just before the phone call with the president. He was setting the stage. Three days before. The reason for that phone call was we got the information that Rudy Giuliani was playing a major part in effecting policy in ukraine and we wanted to doublecheck whether that was the case. That was reason one. Reason two, as far as we knew he was already engaged with certain conversations with ukrainian intermediaries, and we wanted to get rid of them because they were distorting the information. So Rudy Giuliani is the president s friend, lawyer, no role at the state department. Was he effecting policy . From our side it seemed that was the case. Even the title changed. He began the conversation as introducing himself as President Trumps personal lawyer. But then in the middle of the conversation he was his adviser and friend and at the end he was saying feel free to talk to President Trump. I will talk to him as well. We were under the pressure that he was up there in terms of forming political doctrine. Did you ever know of anything else he did regarding u. S. Policy or what he wanted President Trump to get from ukraine. It was all about the Smear Campaign against joe boyd en. Biden. There were a number of interesting things. His trip to kiev alone was strange and peculiar. And another attempt at quid pro quo. We wanted President Trump to voice support for our president before his first ever meeting with Vladimir Putin of russia. We passed along that request to rudy and one of the responses was that i guarantee you that President Trump will tweet support. But i want him to meet with me as soon as i step off the plane in kiev. So transactional. It didnt feel right. How did you feel when you listened to it . I was shocked, scared and bewildered. I expected that phone call to be a casual nice to meet you phone call. We had to try and take an angle that Rudy Giulianis past is mayor of new york, but his involvement with ukraine prior to the situation and try and distract, but also by assessing the level to which he influences u. S. Policy towards ukraine. He made a u turn as soon as giuliani opened his mouth. When you are hearing this, what concerns did you have about possible leakage between these political demands and the National Security of your country . When we found out we had the military assistance frozen at a president ial level, the president and i, we only found out on august 28, so more than ap month after that. Had we known earlier, that would have been frightening. You have to put yourself in our shoes. We are neophytes in politics. Here we are, the new people. We wanted to start anew. If that was the response that we got and treatment that we got, it was petrifying because we have this joke saying if they are doing this to us now and we havent done anything bad to them, can you imagine if we do something bad to them, what would happen to ukraine. Are you concerned now that the president and the government are beginning to ease the reform, let the oligarchs by russia back in, trying to appease, if you will . I have deep concern. We are witnessing the rise of the oligarchs. We are witnessing backtracking, which is mind blowing. That is the major con glom rat, state owned. Something that doesnt benefit the people always benefits putin. There is a connection and i am deeply concerned. We are seeing backtracking and terrible handling of the pandemic. At this rate it will most likely take a few years to get 50 of the people vaccinated and we have russia at our borders waiting to pounce. The u. S. ukraine relationship at the moment is as important as ever. Joining me now is congressman adam schiff, chair of the house and intelligence committee. Lets begin with ukraine. What is your reaction to what you just heard . How does it highlight the importance of ukraines importance. That was fascinating as Rudy Giuliani makes demands of the Smear Campaign of joe biden. It reminded me of a conversation had where volker says you shouldnt investigation the prior president of ukraine. And he comes back right away and says like you want us to do of the bidens and clintons. Just the hypocrisy. There is our ambassador promoting an ant tight corrupting message. And now the president of the United States, donald trump, is affirmatively trying to get ukraine to engage in corruption. Interesting interview. According to the transcript i have seen, volker, the eu from the United States, set up this call and was on the call. He was participating in this call. Is novikov something that the giuliani investigators should talk to . It depends. If they are looking at the effort to get rid of the ambassador and whether that was done on behalf of Corrupt U Crane Officials as well as in the interest of the president s interest to push out this antikupgs fighter so they could get to the investigation of joe biden, if they know something about that, yes, i am sure they want to talk to him. But if their involvement involves other issues, it may be less relevant. I think anyone who can shed light on whether Rudy Giuliani was acting as an undisclosed power of a foreign government, we want to be sure they get the information they need. In fact, the ambassador testified that the motivation was partly political and partly financial, so there may have been energy deals as well. We dont know the motivation. There is still no u. S. Ambassador in ukraine. Judge Amy Bermanjackson wrote a scathing review in part wrote also, the brief memo released before to influence the public reaction. Your comment on that . I remember that period so well when bill barr released that very misleading fourpage summary of the Mueller Report which distorted the report. Because it prompted an unrelenting series of attacks. No one could say what the Mueller Report disclosed at that point because we didnt know. Bill barr really turned the Justice Department into the president s private law firm. He was willing to deceive the country, shield those who protected the president from criminal liability like mike flynn, like roger stone. He was willing to intercede to help reduce sentences for the president s accolites. Also used it as a sword to go after his enemies. I dont think anyone did more damage to the rule of law, apart from the president himself, than bill barr. So those concerned about bill barrs ethical conduct, im glad its being further exposed. I want to ask you about the decision by facebook, that donald trump created what they called serious violence. They suspended his account indefinitely. The president responded saying that free speech was taken away from the president of the United States because of the radical left. Is facebook taking that away . The private companies dont have to use their facebook i think facebook is trying to use at least their oversight is trying to be sure it is fair. And the president continues to push the big lie about the election. He continues to make the case that he would violate the policies if he was readmitted. I hit it pathologically he is incapable of changing. This is a temporary ban. If we are fortunate hopefully it is a permanent ban. The president will not stop the lies about the last election or the next one. He will incite people. Adam schiff, the chair of the intelligence committee. Facebooks board ruled that President Trump will not be allowed to use it. Facebook is given six months to review the matter and whether it is permanent. President trump reacted last hour joining me is jacob ward outside facebooks headquarters in california and monica alba. I am going to start in silicon valley. In response to the president s statement in fact joe biden won the election fair and square. No evidence that any of these lawsuits has shown irregularities that would change results. What brought the board to this decision . It was not a simple updown vote. It was a decision that facebook has to take to keep the president off its platform but must come up to a rationale for doing so that could be applied equally around the world. This is how Thomas Hughes described it this morning. The board has found the suspension of former President Trump was necessary to keep people safe. And that the actions the president encouraged for violence. The board believes the suspension is to right and should be used around the world. Around the world is the operative word. They are not taking the u. S. First amendment into account. They are taking International Law because 90 of users are around the world. The rest of the Social Media Stelation will be looking at it. And others will be watching closely to see what facebook does. Monica, what does this mean in the context of politics at home. The president will not have access to facebook. We are Hearing Chatter he wants to run for president again in 2024. What are we going to see from him. Much like what happened, it is similar to the former president s political future. Kicks the can down the road in terms of what he will do to run again in 2024. He views social media as such an important piece of his platform which is why he dangles a platform, and we saw it was a blog to communicate to his supporters. What you read wasnt even placed on the new blog. It was sent out to email. Thats the way he has been getting things out because he has been banned from twitter and other sites. But what did he do . He started fundraising via text message. Thats why this message becomes to critical. It was a major fundraising platform for him. How will he raise money if he decides to pursue another bid for the white house. The fact he is going to his current donor list, this is big Tech Rhetoric that he felt served him well in the past so he is likely to employ it again. When we talk about other platforms and what they can do, what happened on january 6 and the language specifically, not just at the rally before it, but in the tweets afterwards, you have to remember that language was so powerful, the greatest example so far of words mattering. So when these companies have to make decisions Going Forward about whatever else may be occurring. Thats the most important backdrop to all of this maneuvering. What the board is saying it is a correct decision given the threats to violence and safety, but you cant set a precedence of deplat forming not just trump, but other users. Facebook needs to be clear. I was impressed with the decision. Do you think facebook should ban President Trump permanently in six months. I think what they said was correct. They should ban as long as it is an increase to violence. Just yesterday he was stoking the big lie. If they feel the threat doesnt exist, then they could revisit it. They are concerned about deplat forming millions of individuals, and they are saying thats a tough penalty. You have to have clear standards when you are going to do it and not abuse it. Congressman, this plays into what we are seeing unfold in the Republican Party, liz chaney versus trump. President biden saying he doesnt understand the Republican Party after number two came out against liz chaney. We caught on hot mic venting about liz change so all of them essentially turning on her. An endorsement from President Trump on stefanik to take her place. This is mindboggling. The Republican Party has a total identity crisis. We have totally different views of Foreign Policy, but lets be clear why liz cheney is being removed. Her offense is that joe biden is president of the United States. Can you believe that . How do they expect joe biden can work with them when they dont recognize he is legitimate . What are relationships like between you and some of your colleagues, especially those who suspect or are frustrated with the january 6 insurrection. Its been difficult. I have reached across the aisle where i can. I am working with gallagher and young, people who say, yes, i understand joe biden won the election. You can work with those individuals. But when you have people saying we are going to impede joe biden every step of the way because we dont believe he was legitimately elected, how can you work with them when they dont believe joe biden is the president of the United States. This morning in ukraine i spoke with the Executive Director of the Anticorruption Center who spoke candidly about the trump era and her anger. I think the way the ambassador was treated was disgusting. She was an excellent diplomat. She represented her nation here in ukraine and was very much supportive to prodemocracy and reform for ukraine. By the way we still dont have an American Ambassador in ukraine for two years. The possibility of the United States to contribute and support proud moments in ukraine. I heard that Secretary Blinken will reestablish the support and raise it to the highest possible level. She is going to be part of the Civil Society leaders speaking virtually with Secretary Blinken tomorrow. I am joined. First, you right about the difference we have seen, the Cold Shoulder for brazil, aut okrats of those of President Trump. With the caveats that he has to manage complicated relationships with countries like russia and china. You mentioned brazil, the leader of north korea. I would also put in that basket the leaders of poland and anybo. So it elevated these leaders on the world stage to positions that they wouldnt have gotten, recognition they wouldnt have gotten, certainly otherwise, face time with an american president that they got with trump, they are not getting with biden. So i went through the list of who biden talked to and met with and what hes doing over 100 days and tried to compare with it the way trump conducted himself in office and it is quite a marked difference. And richard haas, in london we saw Foreign Policy in action as the current Secretary Of State had his first meetings with the g7 because of the pandemic, the first time. A very different approach. What is your take so far as to how theyre dealing with russia, china, iran, afghanistan, they have all these problems and most notably, increasingly aggressive, china. A lot of questions packed this there. In terms of the interest of human rights, i dont think we have a lot to show for the new policy. We can talk about it, we can criticize, we can sanction. That doesnt translate into it. All the other countries we have to promote. For example, with the russians. Finding the Nuclear Arms Agreement with. China thinking about north korea or iran. I dont think this administration has succeeded or is wise to even try to put human rights in. Particularly around the ability to preach, shall we say, is quite limited, given events in this country over the recent months and years. I think the administration is off to a difficult start. With china in some ways, its been even worse. We put diplomacy aside in our initial meetings with the chinese. Im not sure we got a lot. Plus the reality. We got a very strong china. And the question is, how do we structure a relationship where we push back where we must, that we still keep open the possibility of cooperating where we want to. It is probably the biggest single diplomatic challenge facing the new administration. And richard, protecting ukraine from russian interference has not been easy for any of the previous administrations either. But Secretary Blinken is arriving to signal support the for ukraine against russia. But also, ukraines president has to avoid backsliding into an Economic System that will undermine its own democracy and make it more vulnerable to Vladimir Putins influence. I had trouble understanding you. In terms of ukraine, look, in terms of pushing back against russia, our ability to really limit it, all the preaching about anticorruption to ukraine looked a little bit hollow when we had american politicians in the last administration beginning with mr. Giuliani going over there, essentially acting corruptly. It is a tough slog in terms of trying to improve the political situation, plus you have geography. Ukraine is right up against russia. The sad reality is we have limited tools but i think were right to be providing events, equipment to ukraine, to look to bolster them economically. And i think the Secretary Of State is right to be there. 80 of life is showing up, simply being in ukraine because we dont have an American Ambassador there yet i think sends a signal of american support. Of course, they still want a meeting with the president.
