Epicenter of the virus in our country. And this comes just as we are getting new reports that the fda is preparing to authorize the Pfizer Vaccine for 12 to 15 year olds by early next week. Yet the news tonight also includes rapidly developing variants and continuing Vaccine Hesitancy among a large block of adults in our country. All of that has experts now doubting that the u. S. Will ever surely reach Herd Immunity, that brass ring we have all been told about. Well, this afternoon the president appeared to have a much more positive outlook. When do you believe the u. S. Will reach immunity . I think by the end of the summer, we will be in a very different position than we are now. Much more on all of that just ahead. Meanwhile, the former president today launched a grenade into the pedal for control of the Republican Party. Ever since he lost, trump of course has been pushing the big lie that he won. This morning he took that to a new level with this statement, quote, the fraudulent president ial election of 2020 will be from this day force known as the big lie. See what he did there . Liz cheney, a republican who was a member of the leadership in the house and who is a favorite target of trump, posted this shortly after trump said that. Quote, the 2020 president ial election was not stolen. Anyone who claims it was spreading the big lie, turning their back on the rule of law, and poisoning our democratic system. Hours later, trump attacked cheney in another statement calling her a, quote, Big Shot War Monger and claiming, quote, she will never run the wyoming election again. Cheney voted to impeach trump, youll recall, after the January 6th Riot and beat back an effort to take away her house Leadership Post that has not stopped her from Criticizing Trump and nbc news has indeed comments she made today during the Conference Held in a sea island georgia. Quote, we cant embrace the notion that the election is stolen. Its a poison in the bloodstream of our democracy. We cant whitewash what happened on january 6th or perpetuate trumps big lie. Its a threat to democracy. What he did on january six is a line that cannot be crossed. Well, Tonight Axios reporting House Republicans are moving closer to ousting cheney from leadership. Shes in the number three position currently, replacing her with another woman from the house ranks. Washington post writes that those republicans who wont spread the false claim of a stolen election find themselves increasingly out in the cold. Today, trump praised romneys hecklers staying on brand and called the senator, quote, a stone cold loser. Well of this was unfolding, President Biden was on the road trying to sell his infrastructure and jobs plan to voters. President has his sights still set on getting republican support on congress if he can, but the parties leader in the senate says thats looking less and less likely. Theres overwhelming bipartisan support for this. You look at polling, data Republican Voters just need to get republican colleagues. Dont think there will be any republican support. None, zero. The 4. 1 trillion grab add it, which has infrastructure evidence. A whole lot of other stuff. With that, lets bring in our league in guy on this. Ashley for the Washington Post, pulitzer winning. Good evening, welcome to you all. Actually, id like to begin with you and your sunday piece specifically just contained some remarkable reporting and this remarkable quote contained therein. Debra l, a republican organizer in michigan and fervent supporter of former President Donald Trump said she has good reason to believe that the 2020 president ial election was stolen. I think i speak for many people in that trump has never actually been wrong, and so we learn to trust and he says something that hes not just going to speak something out there thats wrong and not verified. Ashley that goes a long way to explaining the new cnn poll, 70 surveyed believe this election was stolen and it goes a long way of explaining how deep the belief runs. Thats exactly right. And one of the things we said to document this weekends story was that this is not just a question of sort of a guilty test for republican lawmakers and washington. The truth is generally no better and they refused to accept the election and thats more an indication of their unwillingness to take on former President Trump. And they kind of like to avoid the question, but when you go across the country and you look down at lower levels of the Republican Party so you know state party, chairman, executive directors, Grassroot Activists like deborah l who i interviewed. A lot of them really do believe what donald trump has falsely and faces sly been claiming and what he is now today trying to rebrand as his own big lie and take that back from democrats. And so, if you are someone who truly believes everything that donald trump says and truly believes wet is a lie is actually correct, that the election is stolen, then you can understand at least where that behavior comes from. Trying to cast out people in the Republican Party who do except the Election Results and its really roiling the party and its going to prove quite decisive not just in how the primaries work and if it moves the party further to the fringe but then the potential backlash and downside for republicans in a general election were a lot of the voters need to win and a general election to win statewide, moderate voters, independents, suburban women dont like this. They dont like the big lie and will likely punish the party who is continuing to perpetuate it. A great point. Before we get to matters of the law, to a busy lets talk about Congresswoman Cheney and lets do that by first airing this. This is a senate but from a spot put together by the republican accountability project. Nothing is going to stop liz cheney from telling the truth. We will not forget what happened on january six. The truth about the Election Results. The election wasnt stolen. The truth about the january 6th attack on the capitol. President trump claimed four months that the election was stolen and then apparently set about to do everything he could to steal it himself. But Snowflake Republicans in congress cant handle the truth. You cant handle the truth. Because it exposes their lies to the american people. President trump won this election. The vote was polluted by illegal ballots. This election stolen. The evidence is overwhelming. Republican, democrat, or independent. If you stand for the truth, stand with lies. So ap, that some damage stuff not even counting the cameo by jack nicholson. There is reporting out there that this attempt to strip Congresswoman Cheney of her number three Leadership Role again is a straightup hit job by Kevin Mccarthy who is trying to protect his friendship and relationship with donald trump and his ability to visit maralago. Whats say you on this subject . Right. I thought it was interesting today that former Congressman Carlos of florida said to casey hunt that there are republicans in the house of congress who supported her last time and will again and urge her in private to continue to speak the truth. And so she has this good standing. The problem is, the last challenge by matt gates and others to liz cheney, she did enjoy the support of Kevin Mccarthy. And she does not now. And he is too happy to make that clear. I was surprised to learn that it had gotten this bad and in talking to a few republicans, i learned that it is going to be the end of her Leadership Role. If she cant convince enough people to again in Secret Ballot back in endorse her last time and will again. I mean, she is an asset. We know from the New York Times piece by robert draper, shes basically saying bring it. She is taking every opportunity to tell the truth. She smacked down what trump said this morning an hour later on twitter and she is really not shy about speaking about this. And so the people that supported her last time and like this member who will support her again, still think that she needs to stop taking every opportunity to be on a separate page in the conference. Its a Leadership Position. Everyone is supposed to be singing from the same page. Kevin mccarthy is now no longer supportive of her. And the one phrase i thought was so interesting was she is chosen to put herself in the crosshairs and their her opponents to shoot and sooner or later somebody will. So whether or not she can get to that overwhelming number, we know thats not true. If she manages with these secret normal republicans who know the truth and want her to hold on and to actually survive another Secret Ballot for her position. Maybe its a possibility but its an increasingly looking as if its not. Another way of saying she persisted, i guess. Professor mary lets talk about this meaningless recount of the already recounted votes in Maricopa County and arizona. And on the legal fronts tell our audience please about the danger of this kind of thing multiplying. About the danger of local movements to perhaps have parties and not counties supervised account. Its a very disturbing trend, brian, and one thats worth watching. Again, this all stems from the big lie that actually talked about in her reporting and i think one of the things were seeing here is sort of a bigger legislative move. Weve seen it around the country that these republican controlled legislatures are passing more and more restrictive voting laws. This is part of it. I am part of the Voting Restrictions are not just limiting 24 hour drivethrough voting but theyre also limiting some have argued that this could be both the deterrent and even a possible intimidation factor for minority voters. So that too is concerning. But i think at bottom, with all of this underscores and its sort of a slant on something that actually just said is that in some of these states, the districts are drawn in such a way that in many cases, many candidates will have their most significant challenge in the primary, the partner person primary. That means it at the base of the party it really does have the opportunity to dictate legislative activity once the candidate has been installed as the actual representative or Congress Person in that case. And so, i think were seeing a real push from the base to dictate some of these policies and i think it is, again, animated from this big lie. Actually, think of what it is were talking about here. Lets call it a battle in the Republican Party and nothing approaching a full on civil war because we havent seen the other side kind of coalesce. Whats, if any effect, does this have on the agenda of the sitting president . Well, one thing President Biden has been quite good at starting in the campaign is not to elevate donald trump now that hes the former president not responding to tweets but he has been successful in doing that but one challenge for him is when you have a portion of the country who, if you believe President Trump former President Trumps big lie, believe that President Biden is not really the president. He is there illegitimately and that makes even we mentioned earlier we show that clip of Biden Redefining Bipartisanship and saying hes winning over voters out in the country. Well, its a lot more difficult and a bit more of a leap to win over a voter who doesnt believe you deserve to be president because they believe a false and faceless lie but he some house stole the election. They suspect his agenda day today not really, so hes pretty good blocking out the noise. But on a cosmic, existential level, its something in the water that is definitely problematic for him. Ap, the caucus of cheney, romney, and kinzinger could fit comfortably in a volkswagon for their Caucus Meeting so lets just establish these are modest beginnings. Is there an appetite for a wing to develop of republicans that is not based on fealty to the big lie . I just think brian, looking at the last few days, the results from texas six special election there, where adam king zinger is backed in michael woods, who did terribly, and trump candidates rose to the top for the top two candidates in that run choice election if you look at what happened to mitt romney, people no longer, even if they dont agree with him, find that they can respectfully throw it against him at the conference without booing him. A former governor, a sitting senator, and the former partys nominee. You look at what is going on with liz cheney, who is not picking a fight over policy, which many people did, or several people did the last few years with donald trump, and they were this rated for it. Whether its free trade, or entitlement reform, or deficit spending, or eminent domain. She is actually acknowledging reality, and she is going to voice her position, and ultimately her professional seat because a bit. You are right, who else would vote against donald trump to impeach him is speaking out only republican king zinger in the house. Theyre encouraged to stay quiet, and get enough Campaign Dollars to hold their seats. There is no gop, no new one. There is no room for that. No running on the. Wallace cheney is willing to go down for her principles. She knows there is no political path in this party for her. Wow. I would like to give you the last word, you cant fight city hall. What about a state house. These measures that are straightup Voter Suppression, that are being signed in the law by governors. Whats Legal Recourse do people outside of the states possibly have . Well, right now, the Supreme Court has a case for it that might really be determinant and whether these laws lead challenge going forward. This is a case out of arizona, it challenges to particular arizona lies laws one for ballot harvesting, and one that deals with mailin ballots. Again, if the Court Decides that these measures can be limited, and the Legal Recourse that individuals have for challenging these measures, they will be obviously having implications for other kinds of voting laws, and Voter Suppression laws going forward. I think we have to wait and see until the end of this, but certainly with the court doesnt need to combine cases that a virus on it will be a strong signal about whether or not these laws can be successfully challenged going forward. Mister chairman, is this a page from the well worn hem know of liberal fever dreams that you could make liz cheney a martyr, and that it would backfire and make her politically more powerful if you tried to topple her from the Leadership Post . Yes. I think so. Its not even so much of the back in the issues and the policies behind them, its that for someone like liz cheney because there is no secret in this cheney in this country liz is illegitimate. She is from good conservative pedigree if you will. There is no concern about where she is on a number of conservative issues that are important to those of us in the movement. However, what distinguishes her from this crop of political people, it is the fact that she is a leader. She is the reflection of that brand of leadership that a lot of americans know should exist, that goes beyond partisanship. So the fact that she is taking the stance that she had has, it actually put her in an interesting position to hold some power, if you will, to use that term, if she happens to get ousted. It could be a bigger pain in the you know what to a lot of these folks that think, well, we will just go ahead and get rid of her and she will go away. What i know about liz cheney she aint going away easily. Shes already shown that. It is something that abc daughters has said that as she noted, there is no political pathway for her as the republican in the u. S. House of representatives in this particular caucus. And you know whats, who is . Thats okay. A lot of us out here, we have your back. A lot of americans have got your back. We see why they are coming after you. It is not because you are less conservative, it is because you will not cozy up to trump. Everybody knows what that means, and everyone knows why they are doing it. I think she will come out okay. Seeing her go through this, she has a lot of friends around this country, and a lot of friends still within the party who i think she can come to rely on should stupid prevail, and mccarthy does the inevitable. Wow. Interesting stuff there to our viewers underscoring, this is the former chair of the Republican Party with us this evening. That brings us to cornell. Cornell, i have something for you. With this is michael gerson, famously 43s famous reporter in the Washington Post today. Nothing about this is normal. The gop is increasingly defined not by a shared belief, but by its share dilute it delusions. To be a loyal republican, one might either be a sucker or a liar. Because this defining falsehood is so obviously laughably falls, we can safely assume that most Republican Leaders embrace it fall into the second category. Knowingly repeating ally inactive immorality is now the evidence of republican fidelity. Cornell, there is a lot there. I have a dual question for you. Do you think the gop in our lifetime will be reality based again, and what kind of challenges for the democrats, earnest as they always are, to be fighting an enemy that adheres to no rules with nothing to lose . You know, brian, those are great questions. I want to be optimistic like my Friend Chairmen is. You know, that liz cheney might in fact end up being churchill. Vanished, but then come back triumphantly. I just dont see it, because shes not a democrat. She is a bona fide conservative. The problem with trump parties, whats she is not is a bona fide tribalist. Not a nativist. When you strip back the big lie, what is the big lie about . The big lie is about protecting their tribal warrior. I dont think liz cheney is going to be true chilean here in this kind of come back in the Republican Party. This is no longer the Republican Party that liz cheney, or even bush, or chairman steele, or even ronald reagan, brian, would be able to win a primary in this Republican Party. Ronald reagan who watched his campaign in 1979, talking about america sometimes raw, but never mean. You have a Republican Party today that rebels in being wrong, and excited about being wrong. It is as mean as it possibly can be. I am worried about that direction that they are going. Also more importantly for the country is this, what are the things in policy that they are trying to put in place. One of the policies that are getting in the way of and being a hurdle to because of this tribalism . Liz cheney and other republicans, they cannot pass the threshold. The threshold is to leach on and perpetuate the big lie, which is about again, protecting a tribal strongman in a changing america. Both of these gentlemen are going to stay with us. Quote, democrats are preparing to kick off a sensitive internal debate over the issue this month. But no republican support it. Again, conversation for another time. You hear a lot of mainstream democrats on Voter Suppression. Say, dont reach for the stars, reach consensus. Give us a clean bill to clean up Voting Rights. On that front, the democrats who are watching the republicans do this just think theyre watching a suicide mission. Your lifes work is polling. Do you think theres any chance the republicans are poll driven on some of the stuff and theyre going to lay down their bet on the table because of that . Brian, theyre driven. Theyre driven by the results of elections. And this story carries over from the less story we just talked about here. Republicans cant be for standing Voting Rights. They cant be for making it easier for every american to vote. Theres a fundamental value here. Should it be easier to vote or harder to vote . And overwhelmingly americans think it should be easier to vote. But you see these voting laws, you know, whats someone called them crow two Point Oh Voting laws being enacted and state after state, guess what . Because of, again, the big lie and i said this months ago when the big light surfaced that in the end, this is going to be justification for them putting up hurdles to people voting. And by people, i mean people of color and so when you have states like georgia that are increasingly competitive because of the growth of the black vote and you see that growing the black and brown vote growing through the sun belt. So no republicans cant possibly be for expanding Voting Rights and letting Everyone Vote if theyre in fact going to be the trouble party. So its a full cyclical problem for the Republican Party. There are double downing on tribalism and if they doubled down on tribalism, i have to block the vote to make it harder for people to people of color to vote but the future belongs to a party that can be bigger, not smaller. Right . If you look in the crystal ball here, you understand that the future does not belong to the narrowing coalition of voters that surround donald trump. Theyre going to have to get bigger or chairman still is going to have to become a democrat. Well, chairman steal since your name was invoked. Here is my second question. It deals with the chance of back firing, all these State Provisions that governors are signing. Whats the chance, you and i have talked about this before thats going to backfire on the voters, the republicans want. I still think the chances very high. You know, brian, im drawn to a quote that actually applies to the last segment where a member of the caucus in talking about liz cheney said, quote, does chinese stubborn insistence stick with her convictions rub some of this wrong . Yes. And as i talk about this issue, just take out everything and put in voting. Does voting equity, this voting opportunity, there is voting freedom rub us wrong . Yes. And thats where the party is. And its so unfortunate because they can actually be a leader in this space. They can actually, you know, carve up some new ground here for americans to access the ballot box. But they have bought into this narrative at the cornell reference, this big lie narrative, and such a way that they are stuck. And with leadership thats currently in place which again, is why liz cheney stands out. She is standing on principle. Shes called thing what it is. And that is a lie. And that there was no fraud in the 2020 election. And that anyone who perpetuates that is a liar and a fraud. And so instead of leaning into leadership, their leading back into trump and so voters will have a chance as they get ready for 2022 and they are standing in those lines and they dont have access to the ballots the way they did in 2020. And they cant get to the polls or theyre being penalized or their behavior criminalized. They will know exactly who brought all of that to them. What would life be like with Herd Immunity and is it your determination that were going to miss that brass ring as a society . Well first of all, Herd Immunity has actually come to mean a lot of things to a lot of different people and i think if you lined up any ten different people in this business still have ten different definitions. The bottom line is what it means is that when you have enough protection in the community, in other words, i mean rods that go into that virus reactor. I mean people. Then you start to shut down the transmission. Theres nobody to transmit it to and that has always been a theoretical valued says at this 0. 85, 90 of the population is immune, and basically you wont see transmission. Now that varies with each infectious agent. Ive worked up major epidemics in a state like minnesota where we had 92 of the population against measles but it was so infectious that six to 8 were connected by neighborhoods or social groups etc. Where were at right now with this virus is a situation where we dont need to hit Herd Immunity to hit major impact. The last hundred days is nothing been short of modern miracle. I was on that Biden Harris Transition Team Advisory Board we stood debate whether its even possible to get 100 million doses of vaccine out in the first hundred days of the administration. Theyve got 220 million at that time and i think thats had a tremendous impact and taking off the table a major surge of cases in this country. So the bottom line is, we wont get to Herd Immunity. We have too many people that arent getting vaccinated. The vaccines are not 100 percent effective. The variants are now more infectious than the president previous once were. We dont have to get to Herd Immunity to get to a new sense of the new normal. To a new sense of the new normal. House, where its in our house were excited for New Jersey Shore house. In 2021.
