For. Two sources familiar with the matter confirmed to nbc news that the Search Warrant was for evidence that giuliani was involved in efforts to oust the former ambassador to ukraine, Maria Yovanovitch on behalf of ukrainian government. We know giuliani has not yet been charged with any crime. Joining me now is Michael Cohen, former personal attorney to President Trump former President Trump, author of Disloyal A Memoir and cohost of podcast mea culpa. How much pressure is rudy under right now . Rudy is under a lot of pressure right now because rudy knows whats on his cell phone, whats in his emails, whats in these chats that he may have on encrypted apps and so on. Everyone keeps talking about how much trouble is rudy in . What about all of the people rudy communicated with, what about the possibility that donald trump is actually named in these communications, don jr. Or jared or ivanka or bill barr. Nobody has turned around and started to think about the extent of the information that the fbi, that the Southern District of new york has as a direct result of taking yuds electronic devices. Michael, would donald trump actually communicate with rudy on those devices in any way that would make it possible for any regular person looking at those communications to see that he was doing something potentially illegal . No, no, because donald trump doesnt have an email account. He didnt use email. He certainly didnt use Text Messaging either. What youll probably have is communications whereby rudy makes a statement. Just spoke to the president , blah, blah, blah. And what will now happen is, of course, donald will claim, i never directed rudy to do anything. I never said anything. Its the typical donald j. Trump standard m. O. I never directed him. He did it on his own. Thats where rudy is going to have to come out and defend himself because donald will throw him under the bus. Rudy knows that. He saw what donald did to me and i actually had a relationship with trump for well in excess of a decade. Theres no personal relationship between donald and rudy. They were using each other for various purposes. Donald in order for someone to defend him for free and rudy so he can go out and grift and go to Foreign Countries in order to pick up business. It was a quid pro quo. Now you have the Southern District of new york with a treasure trove. Look, Maria Yovanovitch is the cake. They already know what they have with her. Everything else theyre going to be able to find on those Communication Devices is just icing on the cake. Rest assured that rudy is no genius. Actually, as rudy has gotten older, rudy has become stupider and weve seen that on television. A lot probably has to do with his drinking and drinking and making errors are certainly part and parcel. Maria yovanovitch is just the base and Everything Else will be icing. Michael, let me get your response to giuliani to believe this is to Tucker Carlson. Have a watch. If its not, ill correct myself. Because if this can happen to me and, in fact, the president of the United States, former president , it can happen to anybody. Ive never heard of someone blatantly violating the Attorney Client privilege that way. And basically what they did when they took all my documents from the icloud, they admit the that there was Attorney Client privileged information there. They decided on their own what they would use and what they wouldnt use. Thats greg kelly from news max. The question to you, Michael Cohen, is when you were in the same situation, didnt you make the same arguments hes making now, Attorney Client privilege, how dare they do this . Sure, sure. And what i did is we had consequence. Theres a review team that was required to go through. They took 14 million documents from me. Probably more than 10 million were between my wifes emails, text messages, photographs of my children going back 25 years. There wasnt as much as the media tried to make out. But there will be a team that will go over the information. The problem, of course, is smk somebody has to pay for it. Rest assured, donald wont pay for it. Thats one of the issues that a lot of the information being released that could have been deemed Attorney Client privilege. Donald will treat rudy the same way he treated me, which is, rudy who . Michael who . Thats just who donald trump is. Earlier you said Maria Yovanovitch, former ambassador to ukraine, is icing on the cake. There might be other things. Do you have any insight into what those other things might be . Well, there might be communications between him and bill barr about the remand back to prison, could be all sorts of communications between him and jared kushner, potentially, you know, ivanka, bill barr again regarding these illegal pardons that everybody was shopping around for. Who knows whats in there. You know who knows . Rudy giuliani knows. Thats why hes saying the most ridiculous and stupid things that rudy has ever said. As we all know over the last two years, rudy has said a lot of stupid stuff. Last question to you, michael, do you anticipate Rudy Giuliani doing what you ultimately did, and that is to cooperate with the investigation . If rudy doesnt cooperate, hes a bigger fool than i even thought he was because donald trump is going to throw him under the bus the same that he did to me. The difference is rudy will do a 5k1 agreement, something i wont do. Mine was a Campaign Finance violation and rudy is more significant. Rudy potentially involved himself in National Security issues whereas mine was a Campaign Violation that i was never part of the campaign. I didnt do a 5k1 cooperation agreement. I just cooperated because i refused to be the villain of Donald Trumps story. I wasnt going to let history portray me that way. Michael cohen, thank you very much for coming back to the sunday show. Joining me now is former lead House Impeachment Manager and chairman of the house intelligence committee, congressman adam schiff of california. Congressman schiff, how surprised were you about the news that Rudy Giulianis office and home were raided . Not that surprised in the sense that we knew giuliani had been in ukraine doing a number of things. We knew he was there trying to advance this Smear Campaign against ambassador yovanovitch. We knew there were at least a couple reasons for this. He wanted her out of the way so he could get the ukrainians to do these corrupt investigations or announce these corrupt investigations into the bidens and into this russian narrative that it was ukraine that interfered in the 2016 election to help hillary. But it also appeared he was doing some business there. It may very well be what the fbi is looking at is was giuliani hiding from the u. S. Government the fact that he was representing ukrainian interests, who also wanted to get rid of yovanovitch for different reasons. Of course, the danger here is you have an american citizen, personal attorney of the president , engaged in pushing out a kremlin false narrative and perhaps doing so at the behest of the ukrainian politicians. This is, i think, whats at stake in these allegations. Ukraine factored prominently and was the big piece of the first trump impeachment hearing, that you were the leader of the impeachment team. Did you come across any information that you ultimately shared with the investigators in new york or vice versa . How did that work . We did not communicate with the prosecutors in new york about evidence about Rudy Giuliani. We certainly hoped whatever we brought to light in the impeachment trial, because it would be available because it was public, to those engaged in any kind of investigations of all the different corrupt characters around the president and potentially the president himself. There were time we made references we referred transcripts to the Justice Department or bob muellers team of people we thought committed perjury before our committee, but we didnt view ourselves in the Impeachment Inquiry in playing a role to try to provide evidence to the authorities. And do you agree with Michael Cohen that the Maria Yovanovitch piece of this is just the icing of the cake or the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Rudy Giuliani . Well just based on the public reporting, i think the focus of the investigation appears to be was Rudy Giuliani, this person who was basically communicating with members of the congress, with the president , was he secretly working for a foreign power because he was making money from it or because there was some other bargain . That is, you help me get rid of the ambassador so i can help the president get ukraine to do these sham investigations and i will help you in some other way or help you get rid of the ambassador for ukrainian reasons. I think thats the predominant focus. Is it possible theyll find other corrupt things in his electronics, without a doubt, that is certainly possible. But i wouldnt speculate about what that is or who that may involve. Chairman schiff, in the little time we have left, i want to pivot and talk about the american jobs plan and American Family plan that President Biden talked about during his joint session of congress. There is reporting that theres some comfort among the Democratic Caucus that they would be fine with breaking up those two plans in pieces if it means getting parts passed by congress. Are you on k with that . Are you game with that . I certainly dont want to be negotiating against ourselves. I think each part is enormously important to the country. This is big. I think the president is being very bold. Just as Franklin Roosevelt was. But i think boldness is what we need. The economy is not working for millions of americans. When people and their family get sick, they dont have the ability to take care of them because theres no paid and family medical leave adequate to the task. We dont have adequate Early Childhood education and that sets our kids back. We dont have Affordable College education and that sets our kids back. And working parents dont have affordable child care and that sets us back. We really need these investments in our Human Infrastructure as well as our physical infrastructure to make the country prosper. Im really not willing to take anything off the table. One more question to you on this and that is one of the knocks against the president from conservatives and from some republicans is the president is dictating to American People what kind of families they should have. What do you sa i to that . I think thats nonsense. Hes dictating what kind of families people have because he wants affordable child care . He isnt saying people should leave the home to work but people should have the freedom to do that. Its good for the economy. I think thats ridiculous. Theyre grasping at straws because what the president is proposing is so popular. Do republicans really want to say, lead in our pipes, against childhood education, they dont want to make college affordable, they dont want people to be able to take care of elderly when theyre sick so they come up with these phoney arguments. Im with the president. I think its right for the country, enormously popular and i wouldnt want to be standing in the way. Congressman adam schiff of california, thank you for coming back to the sunday show. My pleasure, thank you. Up next, this isnt trumps Justice Department anymore. The fbi will be opening a civil rights investigation into the death of andrew brown jr. Who was shot by police in North Carolina one day after officer Derek Chauvin was convicted for the death of george floyd. Its just the latest in a string of probes being launched across the country after Attorney General Merrick Garland reversed trumpera rules that restricted these investigations. Signs that hes taking back the independence of the Justice Department. Joining me now is former governor of massachusetts, deval patrick. Also former Assistant Attorney General for civil rights under bill clinton. Thank you for coming to the sunday show. Good morning. What do you make of the flurry of news coming out of the department of justice in the area of civil rights . First of all, i will say as an alum of the Civil Rights Division, as a black man and as a patriot, its really really, really exciting and gratifying to see the Civil Rights Division back in the civil rights business. And i think thats exactly what the president promised. He kept that promise and the appointment and appointment of Merrick Garland was even more towards that. So good on them. One other thing, you ran the Civil Rights Division and one of the things that was announced is that the three men who have been charged with killing Ahmaud Arbery are potentially facing federal i think its federal hate crimes charges, as we see there. Yes, federal hate crime charges for the killing of Ahmaud Arbery in georgia. How significant is that . Its really important. As you know, and your viewers may, if i understand it correctly, the individuals have not gone to trial yet on the state criminal charges against them. Normally its the case that doj waits for action at the state level or a decision not to act at the state level moving forward. I suspect thats what will happen here. I think the message is that there will be accountable for civil rights for the kind of hateful violence that was all caught on tape in the case of Ahmaud Arbery and others. And thats important. Another announcement made last week is Derek Chauvin, the federal the feds plan to indict him, according to star tribune, Indict Chauvin and the other three officers on civil rights charges in the murder of george floyd. The significance of that . Again, the department of justice is paying attention to examples and evidence and outcomes of violations of Individual Civil Rights around the country. There are a number of pattern and practice announcements that have been made as well about inquiries into police departments, and they will get a chance to talk about that as well. But this is all important. In fact, in terms of pattern and practice, lets have a listen to the Attorney General from earlier last week. It is clear the Public Officials in minneapolis and louisville, including those in Law Enforcement, recognize the importance and urgency of our efforts. We come to them as partners knowing we share a common aim. You brought it up, we played the tape. Talk about the pattern and practice investigations and the impact that will have on louisville and minneapolis. A couple things id say about that. First of all, you know, one of the good things to come out of the much maligned crime bill was the Authority Given to the Justice Department to do precisely these kinds of investigations, to look at departments overall and to consider within a period of time whether there were certain patterns or practices that were common, and whether those common patterns or practices violated civil rights laws. That is normally done in a sort of granular way, jonathan, to say theres a lot of review of a lot of information and documents over time. There will be interviews. Im sure Attorney General garland is right in saying these will be as much as possible cooperative with local states Attorney General or city counsel. Theres one insight im hoping or one takeaway im hoping the American Public will have from this string of incidents that have gotten public attention over the last year or so. That is there are often, not sometimes, but often a wide discrepancy between the official Police Account of what happened and what the videotape actually shows. And that is not to say police are always lying. Thats not what im saying. But they often, in my experience, give a very sanitized view in their official account of what actually happened. And having so many of these demonstrated as being quite a bit more horrific in substance and tone, i think, should raise the consciousness of everybody, again, of how important it is that the department of justice step forward in the way it happens. Right. We saw that glaringly in the case of the Minneapolis Police departments Public Notice of the death of george floyd. Its not just the doj that announces pattern and practice investigations that mayors also ask for probe of a police department. Deval patrick, the commonwealth of massachusetts. Thank you for coming the sunday show. Next up, the next 100 days for Vice President Kamala Harris. Well take a closer look at the big things on her todo list. Madame speaker, madame Vice President. [ applause ] no president has ever said those words from this podium. No president s ever said those words. And its about time. Yes, it is. Vice president Kamala Harris and House Speaker nancy pelosi made history wednesday as the first women to preside over a joint session of congress. This streaking image of harris walking to the chamber was captured by nbcs frank thorpe. With the 100day benchmark behind her, she has a lot on her plate and here to talk about it is symone sanders, adviser and Chief Spokesperson to Vice President of the United States. Thank you very much for coming to the sunday show. Thank you for having me today, jonathan. Always good to be with you. Lets talk about what is on the Vice President s plate. Theres a lot. There is encouraging communities to get vaccines, addressing root causes of migration in mexico and the northern triangle countries, heading a worker labor union task force, leading effort to increase access to broadband internet, chairing the National Space council. It would appear, at least if you look at the polling and you look at the news that the priority is whats happening at the border. Particularly what the Vice President is charged with, and that is the northern triangle countries. Lets have a listen to what Vice President harris had to say about the northern triangle on good morning america. It will not be fixed overnight. Look, if it were easy, it would have been fixed a long time ago. Its not a new issue. But were prepared to make the investment and to get in there for the long haul to do what is necessary to address the reasons people flee. Does the Vice President have a sort of internal timetable for when she would like to see progress happening within the northern triangle countries . Well, first, jonathan, let me say, you really laid out a robust number of things the Vice President is engaged on. In fact, her priorities are the priorities of the administration. That also means getting the american jobs plan passed which is why she was in baltimore and cincinnati, ohio, yesterday pardon me, on friday, touting those plans and will be in milwaukee next week as well as providence, rhode island. So, on the issue of the northern triangle, you asked the question of progress. Its been a little over a month since the president asked Vice President harris to take over negotiations, and we have seen progress. Just last week the United States committed 310 million for urgent relief in the region and that had everything to do with addressing food insecurity, beefing up the borders, coordination, doj is working to coordinate with guatemala and folks in the northern triangle region to curb smuggling and human trafficking. The Department Of Commerce has committed to doing Virtual Trade Mission Under Secretary mondo. Last week Vice President harris met with the president of guatemala and she also met with Civil Society leaders or communitybased organization leaders, if you will, in guatemala so that she is not only engaging with the government, but also engaging with the people on the ground because this is going to take a wholistic approach. Lastly, ill note, she also met with foundation ceos, spearheaded, bringing that group together by the ford foundation, darren walker, and shell have additional meetings over the next couple of weeks, a virtual bilat with mexico. As the Vice President said, this is not going to change overnight. But we have seen progress and well continue to see progress. And i think thats something we can all be glad about. And reported in the Washington Post today is there could be planning for a trip to one of the northern triangle countries as early as june . Can you confirm that . That is correct, jonathan. I can confirm that. The Vice President is very much looking forward to traveling to mexico city and to guatemala some time in june. I dont have dates i can share with you yet. But these trips this trip will be important and it will be the first of many trips. But this work is important, engaging in the region in person and virtually. Shes speaking and addressing the council of americas also upcoming this week, virtually addressing them. This is important. Our diplomatic efforts are critical to success and whats happening at the u. S. Southern border. There are many pieces to this issue. Theres a piece of whats immediately happening at the border. I would like to note that the number of children in cbp custody has gone down, the amount of time children are spending in cbp custody is moving down and theyre moving them into hhs facilities. We know theres more we need to do. Thats a piece of the issue and also the Vice President s piece. We are working hand in glove, trying to make progress every day, jonathan. Speaking of Vice President , but the former Vice President , have a listen to what he had to say in South Carolina on thursday. After 100 days of open borders, runway spending, more government, defunding the police, abandoning the right to life, canceling our most cherished liberties, ive had enough. There used to be a tradition that the former president and former Vice President gave some Breathing Room to their successors. Not so former Vice President pence. Any reaction to what he had to say . We wish Vice President pence well, jonathan. I will note that during the joint session, President Biden talked he hit on a lot of different topics. First he took the American People through the story of the last year, a little over a year and a half. Talked about the challenges weve endured but also how we have come together to beat those challenges. He talked about the promises he made and the promises he kept and delivered on. He promised 100 million shots in 100 days. President biden and Vice President harris noted we got over 200 million shots in 100 days. Checks in bank accounts, more jobs, schools are open. Jonathan, more schools are open now than at any previous time during the pandemic. Theres progress but theres still work to do, which is why we are urging the passage of the american jobs plan. I got you. Ive got to get you to talk about one thing thats very, very important. Take a look at your screen here. Second gentlemen of the United States at the joint session. Were going to show him blowing kisses to the Vice President , patting his heart. The interplay between the second gentleman and the Vice President. Talk about the two of them in the 15 seconds we have left. Arent they just amazing. Vice president harris and the second gentleman often talk about how important it is that its not just for little girls, that little boys see and know that this world were living in could be, quote unquote, normal. To see a woman as Vice President of the United States, a man as second gentleman, to see joe biden as the president , dr. Biden, a doctor, a teacher, as the first lady. Were making so much history right now, jonathan. Were very excited to be doing the work on behalf of the American People. 100 and some days down, a whole lot more days to go. Our covid19 experts, medical experts, our National Security advisers, it is important to note, as i said earlier, we have a responsibility as the United States, in particular as it relates to the people we have partnered with over the years to step up when people are in a time of need. I get called uncle tom and the n word by progressives, by liberals. Hear me clearly. America is not a racist country. For those of us in the real world, racism in america is a 400year epidemic, but for republicans, even black ones, not that big a deal. Joining me now to discuss our melanie campbell, president of the black womens roundtable and kimberly atkins, msnbc contributor, senior opinion writer at the boston globe and cohost of the hashtag sistersinlaw podcast. Melanie, ill start with you. Your reaction to what senator scott said. Thank you, jonathan, for inviting me. My reaction was, are you kidding . And then i stepped back and i listened forced myself to listen. What bothered me most about senator scotts as much as i believe he knew he wasnt talking to all of the American People. I believe he knew he was talking to a certain base element of the Republican Party, who dont want to believe theres racism in this country, who dont want to see black and brown people vote, who dont want to see a lot of inclusion and the fear that if you do something for one, thats taking something away from me. So, what bothered me is he talked about unifying and that our current President Biden Harris Administration is dividing the country but ive lived long enough to hear dog whistles when i hear it. Whos talking about americas racist . Lets just go there. Whos using that language in the first place . What were talking about is systemic racism that has been here, jonathan, as you pointed out 400plus years. And we have this moment in time. And because of what happened over this past year with george floyd Ahmaud Arbery and breonna taylor, we know the nation wants to deal with Police Reform. You have pat robinson talking about we need to deal with Police Reform. Right. So, systemic racial history to it. Ill stop there. But much more i would say, but i know im passionate about this, jonathan. No, no, i know. I can tell. I believe he knows better. Im from the south. Im from florida. Grew up around all kinds of racist folks but not all of my folks i grew up around are racist. Nobody is saying that. But systems in america have a lot of racism attached to it. That is a fantastic distinction that i think gets lost in this conversation. Kimberly . Yeah. I mean, melanie took all of my Talking Points and said it. Look, this was a republican response. We have to remember what this was, republican response to this speech. And so republicans have an interest, just like melanie said, in catering to a core par constituency, which is fuelled by white racial lies grievance. They know that. They want to protect that. We heard after wards. Look at the reception it got. From senator john kennedy said there are people in this country who have contempt for this country. They should be grateful. Thats the message in treating people, black and brown folks who are on the brunt of this systemic racism that mel any was talking about as well as the allies who want to see this system end and treat them as if theyre ungrateful. Treat them as if they have a vendetta against america instead of them wanting to have america live up to its own ideals and potential of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. We have never realized those ideas and those trying to push that are being demonized, and, unfortunately, the gop had the ultimate i have a black friend move by putting senator scott out to be the one to deliver this message. Yeah. It was disappointing. I have a black friend. The only friend because hes the only black republican in the United States senate. To your point, melanie, ill point out the moment when senator scott demonstrated when he knew better. I interviewed congressman jim clyburn on Washington Post live an friday. We talk about we senator scott and is the whole america a racist country . I want to play congressman clyburns response when i asked him to respond to the other senator from South Carolina, Lindsey Graham, and Lindsey Graham saying theres no such thing as systemic racism. Watch this. Lets talk about your other South Carolina colleague, senator Lindsey Graham, who, umm, On One Of The Sunday shows last weekend said flat out there is no systemic racism in the United States. What would you say to senator graham on that point . Nothing. [ laughter ] i thought my audio went out. Nothing at all . Nothing. I mean, i really did think i thought my audio went out. He was just so dead pan. Nothing. Melanie, real fast, i want to squeeze kimberly in, as well. How do you explain to or not even convince but explain to republicans that systemic racism is real. It is here, and unless you talk about it and deal with it, nothing is going to change well, i would say this, jonathan, thank you. Im with senator clyburn. You dont want to feed the madness and people know better. They know better. So at the end of the day, i want to keep pushing. I appreciate what the Biden Harris Administration is trying to do when it comes to racial equity. I appreciate Goldman Sachs and corporations are focussing on 10 million advisory putting 10 billion over 10 years to focus on racial inequities, focus on black women. I appreciate those things and our government doing its part. Young people in the streets. We have young people getting shot unjustly. I want to focus on voting and voting out those people who dont believe we need to deal with systeming racism and put it to bed for the young people to have a better future. I know the fact i wasnt a fan of our last president s Character Issues [ booing ] i havent heard booing like that since ted cruz in 2016. Welcome back to the sunday show. Last night senator mitt romney was met with Thunderous Boos in his Home State Of Utah and seemed surprised. While another antitrump republican, liz cheney of wyoming, is in danger of losing her post as republican Conference Chair as repeatedly criticizing the former president. She told the New York Post and others that republicans who voted against her to find the election should be disqualified for running for president while not ruling out a run from herself. Now theyre considering ousting cheney. Meanwhile matt gaetz and Marjorie Taylor greene seem to be just fine. Matt gaetz and greene are hitting the road together to attack republicans they deem insufficiently loyal to the former president. First stop . Florida. Joining me now is nbc think contributor and former spokesperson for the House Oversight committee charlie sikes, and margaret sullivan. Thank you very much for being here. Kurt, lets start with the intraparty fighting within the Republican Party. What is going on between, really, Kevin Mccarthy, the House Minority leader, and liz cheney . Will she be able to survive this challenge to her Leadership Post that is being reported . Probably not. I mean, it really takes something that weve reached the point where someone with the last name of cheney isnt republican enough to serve in the Republican Leadership of the United States congress. Its really something when someone like mitt romney, who was the Republican Party standard bearer is getting openly booed by his own constituents at Republican Party gatherings. And if im liz cheney, this is almost a badge of honor at this point. If they want to take away your Leadership Post, so be it. Why would you want to be a leader of this incarnation of the Republican Party anyway at this point . The level of anger and hate for simply telling the truth about trump. For telling the truth about january 6th. Its an indict of the level of coward es were seeing from Kevin Mccarthy, steve scalise, jim jordan. They would rather get behind and support people like matt gaetz and Marjorie Taylor greene than liz cheney. Have a listen to what Kevin Mccarthy said when he was asked if Congresswoman Cheney was a good fit for leadership. Is cheney a good fit for your leadership team, do you believe . Thats a question for the conference. What do you believe . What do you believe . I think from a perspective, if youre sitting here at a retreat that is focussed on policy and focussed on The Future Of Making America Next century and talking about Something Else, youre not being productive. I mean, charlie, what good is it to be leader of the republican conference if youre not going to lead . Thats not a lot of leadership here. Theres a lot of followership and, you know, lets just stop here. You know, and acknowledge that political courage is vanishingly rare and were seeing a real profile encouraged from liz cheney and from mitt romney. This is kurt is absolutely right. Its a dramatic indictment perhaps simply reconfirming what we already know that this is a Political Party where mitt romney is booed, liz cheney is about to be purged, and matt gaetz and Marjorie Taylor greene are members in good standing. I dont know how more dramatic you can be. Its almost a Cartoon Version behalf weve been talking about. What youre seeing is this party is, you know, descending deeper into Conspiracy Theories and purges. This is happening all over the country. Its interesting theyre shouting at mitt romney traitor communist. Traitor because loyalty to donald trump is the only form of loyalty we represent and communist because what . That word is just simply going to be trotted out. I mean, it has no actual content here but this contrast you set up here really encapsulates where were at. If i can point out one tidbit even though romney was booed, they had a vote whether or not to censure him and that was defeated. To the extent theres a glimmer of sanity in the party, a vanishing glimmer, you know, you saw a little bit of it but the crazy on full display this week. You know and there was a great observation on al velshi where he pointed out that romney and cheney are the old establishment of the republican patient. As you pointed out, mitt romney, you know, his father was an elected official. He was in the cabinet under republican president. Liz cheneys father was former Vice President of the United States and the senator from wyoming. So it seems as though the republican conference is doing is saying, umm, down with the establishment. I want kurt and charlie to have a listen to what liz cheney had to say about leadership of the Republican Party. I think right now the Republican Party is headed by Mitch Mcconnell and Kevin Mccarthy in the house. I think our elected leaders, you know, are the ones who are in charge of the Republican Party. I think as we look at 22 and 24 were going to be focussed on sun substance and the issues. I think we have to attract back the voters we lost in 2020. Really, kurt . Focussed on substance and issues in 24 and 22 when theyre attacking transgendered girls in sports and dr. Seuss . When mccarthy talked about we need to be focussed on policy. Like, really . Like Hamburger Meat when you invented . Policies like attacking, you know, the Lgbtq Community . Policies like enabling Law Enforcement to shoot unarmed black people in this country and throwing Conspiracy Theories about the verdict of the chauvin trial. Those are the policies you think somehow convince the American People to abandon the Republican Party to magically see that, oh, this is the way forward for our country. These are the policies we want to get behind . There is no Policy Platform of Republican Party. The only policies they adhere to are if joe biden and the democrats are for him, theyre against it. Joe biden democrats can be for everything the republicans said and all of a sudden they would decide thats terrible. Thats socialist. Thats radical and extreme. Those are the words you hear from republicans but you dont hear an ounce of policy coming from them. Yeah. Real fast. So this point the Republican National committee throughout the convention didnt have a platform. Right. They didnt have it. Whatever donald trump says. So i want to underline the point there. Margaret, ill bring you into this conversation. I was holding out because you wrote a column about what were about to see. Have a listen to Tucker Carlson and what he had to say on monday. As were forcing children to wear masks outside, that soub illegal. Your response when you see children Wearing Masks as they play should be no different from your response to seeing someone beat a kid at a walmart. Call the police immediately. Contact child protective services. Keep calling until someone arrives. What youre looking at is a abuse. Its child abuse and youre morally obligated to attempt to prevent it. We spent the first part talking about the battles within the Republican Party. With Tucker Carlson, you have someone from the right who is telling folks around the country to, hey, go accost people because their kids are having masks on. What is happening . Well, its really pretty unhinged stuff. And, you know, you have to understand with Tucker Carlson that this is performative. Its meant to generate outrage. Its, you know, you cant really take it seriously but as we know, sometimes people do take things seriously. So when he talks about going up to people whose children have masks on and reporting them to child protective services, that is really dangerous stuff. Its irresponsible. Its really kind of whacky. And i thought it was important to point it out because its over the top. I mean, Tucker Carlson is pretty crazy to begin with. He says a lot of whacky things but i thought it took to a new level. I mean, it gets to the next question i was going to ask. You said its performative but at some point is it really performative anymore . Do you get the sense someone who has been following fox and following tucker for a long time, do you think that tucker has morphed from performative to actually he believes this stuff . I dont know what is in Tucker Carlsons heart and mind. I dont really want to but i, you know, i cant say whether he thinks this or not. I think it plays with his, you know, group of his sort of base of watchers. I think that fox news is grappling with what they are in the post Trump Presidency era and theyre about letting Tucker Carlson say whatever he wants to say. Theres no effort that i can see to reel him in. I mean, charlie, you spent years on the radio talking to some of the same people in your audience. What do you think . Do you think that tucker am i right . Is tucker has tucker morphed from performative to believing this stuff . Its so unhinged. Yeah. Well, it may not be a distinction that matters. He may be performing and may have convinced himself but the fact is, hes putting these ideas out into the political ecosystem. With trump in exile in maralago, Tucker Carlson is probably the most one of the most influential conservative voices for that republican base. So when we begins to play around with ideas like, for example, the replacement theory, that may be performative but theres real consequences. Its bringing some ugly ideas, ugly notions and attitudes into the political dialogue. And, you know, that particular sound byte was so unhinged because, you know, to the extent that republicans or conservatives claiming that their objection to some of the coronavirus restrictions are about freedom, what is the version of freedom . Call the cops. They were concerned about Government Interference in parenting but if you have your child wearing a mask, well do it. Tucker carlson is doing a lot of stuff off the wall. Unfortunately you have millions of people who dont know that its maybe just performative. So its real and it needs to be taken seriously. The folks at fokts news need to be held accountable for this. You look at the way the Overton Window of acceptable dialogue has shifted just in the last several months and it is really concerning. You know, the discussions about race. Ideas that have been confined to the far reaches of the Viewer Swamps from now on prime time on fox news because of Tucker Carlson. This will have longterm consequences for the Political Health both of our culture and our democracy. One quick word on tucker. We saw him on january 6th. These people, the fox news audience treat what these people on fox news say as gospel and bible. And what Tucker Carlson is doing inviting a confrontation where someone will call the cops on some parent with their child and a confrontation with Law Enforcement and we know the way our Law Enforcement works it could get physical, it could get violent, and someone could end up being killed. If that happens, their blood will be on Tucker Carlson and fox news hands. Yeah. And pretend like nothing happened. Thank you very much for spending time with me on this sunday. Can you give me one example of a transgendered child trying to get an unfair advantage . One in your state. You signed a bill about it. No i cant really tell you one. Well, the governor of West Virginia couldnt point out to a single example that would justify his signing a bill this wednesday to ban transgendered athletes from competing on School Sports teams that align with their gender identity. Its part of a disturbing trend of republican lawmakers targeting transyouth. This week President Biden used the biggest stage in politics to reach out to those kids directly. The americans watching at home, especially young people, so great. I want you to know your president has your back. Joining me now Alfonso David and mara keighley. Thank you both very much for coming to the sunday show. Let me start with you, mara. When i heard the president of the United States talk directly to transyouth, i mean, i jumped out of my chair. We all want to be seen by the leadership of our country. Talk about the significance of that moment for Transgender Americans well, transkids in particular but all transpeople are underattack brutally by politicians and State Governments who are just trying to use as political fodder. Having the president of the United States, who Everybody Knows is a caring person say hes got our back, that goes such a long way to making these kids feel like theyre not alone. Theyre not just being bullied by their State Legislators and governors. They have an ally and they have a really, really significant ally. You know we just showed Stefanie Rhule going toetotoe with West Virginia but the governor of arkansas signed an antitrans bill into law last month and a story came out where a doctor at arkansas Childrens Hospital reported that four of her clients had attempted suicide since the State Legislators over rode the vote of the care denial bill. Yeah absolutely. I dont think they understand what theyre doing the State Legislators. Maybe they do which is even more shameful. They are not attacking liberals. They are attacking children. They are attacking parents of children and theyre telling parents of children and doctors they cannot give the care their kids need. That the doctors and parents think their kids need that all the medical associations said is the appropriate care and circumstances they are not allowed to give their kids this kind of care. Ive never seen anything like it. Its disgusting and shameful. Okay. One more question, mara. Alfonso, i swear im coming to you. Kaitlyn jenner who is running for governor said that transgendered girls of california shouldnt get to participate on girls sports teams, because, quote, it just isnt fair. Your Quick Reaction to that, mara . Shes wrong. Shes wrong and shes interpreting this the same way that the people who are attacking us are. They dont understand. Were not talking about elite athletes. Those people are controlled by the International Olympic committee, the ncaa, all of which organizations have spent a lot of effort and time and science over the last few years trying to come up with policies. And the state athletic associations and the states are working really hard to try to do this right. People dont want State Legislators making decisions like this about how Children Play in school. Thats what this is about. It isnt about going to the olympics. Its about the ninth grader who wants to be on the Junior Varsity bowling team. Right. And lets just point it out, Caitlyn Jenner is a transgendered woman. To put the finer point on. Alfonso, as the leader of the largest lgbtq Rights Organization in the country, the equality act was passed by the house and now its sitting in the senate with a democratic majority but sitting in the senate and going nowhere meanwhile 400 corporations, businesses have stepped in and said this needs to be passed. What is happening with the equality act . Well, thank you for having me on, jonathan. The equality act, as we know, would change the landscape for lgbtq people. It passed the house and sitting in the senate. Were having conversations with the white house, the members of both sides of the aisle to stress to them the importance of passing the equality act and specifically at this time where we have more than 250 antitransgendered and antilgbt q bills pending in states. We have more than 11 that have already been signed. We have more than 9 that are either going to governors desks or sitting on governors desks. We need to make sure that lgbtq people are protected, which is why we have more than 400 Large Companies across the country that are weighing in the largest weve ever had for any lgbtq bill weighing in and saying this is important to do and important to do now. We need to get to republican senators in the senate to make sure they understand the importance of this bill and importantedly address the misinformation that were seeing. So many people are talking about equality act passes, the sky will fall. Those are the same people that said if you allow samesex couples to marry, the sky will fall. If you allow lgbtq teachers to teach in public schools, the sky will fall. The misinformation has to stop. Thats what were doing working with the businesses . And the associated press, to go back to the antitransgendered laws being passed, the associate press reports no big backlash for states passing antitransgendered laws. Any insight into why that is . Especially when from public polls that ive seen thats not where the American People are at least when it comes to the polls. Absolutely. I think what were seeing here in the avalanche of the bills across the country is a lack of awareness. We they people didnt understand how many bills were being passed, the consequences of these bills. To what mara said, theyre real world Collateral Consequences to the bills being passed where transkids are denied medical care and their existence. What were doing now is engaging with Business Leaders weve been doing it for months but doing it even more actively now to make sure they understand if you dont engage, these bills will have significant consequences on our community. I issued a public letter in the New York Times calling on Corporate Leaders to weigh in. Its not enough to simply say we denounce these bills. Were asking them to take action. Thats what were doing now working with Companies Across the country. And with that, well have to leave it there. Alfonso david and mara, thank you very much. Com promo Funeral Services will be held tomorrow for andrew brown jr. , the 42yearold father who was shot and killed by police in elizabeth city, North Carolina as his family and community continued to push for answers, including the public release of Police Body Cam footage. Joining me now one of the speakers at tomorrows funeral, Bishop William barber, cochairman of the Poor Peoples Campaign and author of were called to be a movement. Bishop barber, thank you for coming to the sunday show. Theres a story out about some of the officers charged. North carolina sheriff identifies deputies involved in andrew brown jr. s shooting, returns to duty. This is your home state. Talk about this case. Jonathan, this is eastern North Carolina. The black belt but the place where we have the least amount of diversity. We have a 42yearold young man with seven children who was killed. The tapes havent been fully released. They could have been released that same day. None of these persons should be returned. What we want is transparency and truth. If the tapes show and they show more than the 20 seconds, when it shows murder or execution, there must be arrest, there must be prosecution without immunity, there must be imprisonment. We need a pattern and practice review by the Justice Department. The d. A. Went to court and started suggesting that he looked at the tapes and basically it was a good shoot. Thats wrong. The d. A. Is supposed to seek truth. The d. A. Is not supposed to prejudge the case. They have this particular d. A. And sheriff they are incompetent and theyre incapable of having this case, which is why the government is calling for a special prosecutor. And to your point, i mean, you said you think that the doj, the department of justice should conduct a pattern and practice investigation into that police department. What the department of justice did feral civil rights probe into the killing of andrew brown jr. Does that go far enough for you . Its a great beginning. We certainly wanted that to happen. Listen, again, this is eastern North Carolina. Charged with murder and then later exonerated. Some on death row. We thought for years they would be dead. My father fought against Police Killing in the 1970s. Again. This young man was shot in the back. They came at him like a s. W. A. T. Team. He never had a history of guns. Never had a history. They found no guns or drugs. Even if they had, a warrant is not a license to kill. An arrest is not a license to kill. When they showed the special autopsy, he was shot in the back of the head. So we need the fbi piece. We need pattern and practice. And the first thing is get these tapes. But the whole public needs to see it. They work for us. We dont work for them. Theres so much theyre incapable of handling this. We need the truth. Bishop barber, you said and i had forgotten this, that they promised to have the families see the tapes in 10 days. Why does it take so long . It doesnt. All the law says is that they can ask for permission to we dont have an Automatic Public review of the tapes in North Carolina. Interestingly, the audio tape is public records. Thats what we found out he had been shot in the back. Its deeper than that, jonathan. They promised the family this week they could see the tape and then when they got there, they wouldnt let them see the tape only 20 seconds. Then the sheriff then the fbi said. Its a lot of lying going on. Thats why ive been in consultation with reverend al and hes doing the eulogy and im doing words of comfort. Were standing people are standing. The clergy is standing. Its everybody is saying we need these tapes released. We need transparency and we need accountability. We need it now. In the little time we have left, you said youre going to be giving words of comfort. What kind of words of comfort can you give the brown family and the elizabeth city, North Carolina community . One of the words of comfort is, you know, the name andrew means one who is brave. This young man put his hands on the wheel. They shot him down. But, you know, they may have shot him down but we in my tradition, when we go down, our spirit stands up. Thats what the community is saying. Were not going to stand down. When i look at this, this is Staggering Amount of spending like someone with a new credit card, and these are for things we adopt necessarily need. We certainly cant afford but theyll delight the liberal left of the party. Period that the same republicans didnt have a problem with socalled reckless spending when it was to support tax cuts for billionaires. I cant talk. Joining me now is Jennifer Rubin and Alicia Mendez is here. Fellow anchors prerogative. First, alicia. This argument among republicans that i dont know i hadnt heard it in about four years. Suddenly fiscal rectitude. We must be concerned about the wild spending. Why the sudden Change Of Heart . Well, because we have a different president. Jonathan, i know it was a rhetorical question. Its interesting given what we have lived through. Given this pandemic has laid bare the individual solutions will not meet systemic challenges. You see americans more open to the role of government than they have been in recent memory. And i think that is in large part because of what we lived through. I think if you look at the numbers in the polling, the ways 234 which americans are very supportive of what the president has chosen to do around this pandemic. Both when you look at it as a Health Crisis and when you look at the Economic Relief that this administration chose to prioritize, you see that americans are embracing the role of government. Now as we move into the second stage of proposals where were talking about things are incredibly popular like universal prek, like historic investment in child care, like universal paid family leave, paid medical leave. Those are difficult policies to come out against. Jennifer, i mean, these are your people. I mean, youre a republican. I think youre still a republican. Maybe not in the Republican Party. No. Not in the party but youre conservative. From your advantage point, the sudden my god, the money. We must be concerned. Yeah. Well, you know, trillions and trillions its 2 trillion to be honest. And its exactly the amount of the tax cuts during the trump years. By the way, we dont have to go back four years to see they didnt care about spending. They passed trillions of relief in covid and its working. The economy is coming back. Jobs are coming back. So this notion that we, you know, have burped burned the dollars and nothing happens is false. It gets used in productive ways. These people are so far gone that they dont even represent their voters anymore. A lot of these policies are popular with republicans. Ill name one, many rural states, including wyoming, have child care deserts. In other words, they have, you know, they live out in the middle of nowhere. They have no Available Health care or child care and they are very supportive. There are bipartisan bills introducing that address child care deserts. To address broadband. So maybe barrasso needs to go to wyoming and talk to some of his voters. Kimberly, any thoughts on this or can i ask you about Something Else . Whatever you want, jonathan. I will say its interesting to hear republicans talk about this as wild spending. That would be like if you have a house falling apart saying its wild to invest in replacing the roof and in shoring up the plumbing and getting it to a livable condition. The infrastructure in the United States, both Human Infrastructure and things like child care as well as physical infrastructure has been in desperate need of attention for decades. So the fact that the Biden Administration is now turning to this just reveals how disingenuous this attack is. Kimberly, when you were on in the last hour, i didnt give you a chance to Say Something more about senator scott. Well, senate scott was on Face The Nation this morning. Listen to what he said. Ive been stopped several times in the last three years in the capitol and on the streets throughout the country. Im not having a conversation about a theory or philosophy. Im saying theres a way to restore more confidence from communities of color and say to officers we want characterdriven officers responding to crises in neighborhoods. He denies racism but talks about the racism he confronts in the cub. Im confused by that. I think he had an opportunity with the response. It he was his own and not just the mouthpiece for the Republican Party. To say, you know, we have ideals in this country. Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. The ideals that all men are created equal and we can do the work to live up to the ideals. Im a Black In America and i can tell you racism exists. I know that we are a nation of people most of whom would like to see the systems overcome. It shouldnt be a partisan issue and we should work together. Hes working on a police bill. How perfect the message would have been. He had to say that this idea that racism is built into the fabric of our nation, which it is, is a lie. It he has to do that because too many republicans want to coddle part of their base that is incentivized. That is pushed by driven by White Racialized grievance and they cant let it go. Neither can senator scott. Its a shame. Alicia, from your advantage point, are you as confused as the rest of us are about the needle if hes trying to the needle that senator scott is trying to thread . I think part of what was interesting and what i was listening for both in that interview and on wednesday night was this appeal to a broader base of republicans. You know, we did see President Trump make some minor inroads. And theres a question whether or not theyll be able to hold on to that question of whether or not theyll be able to grow that. I think part of what were watching is so much of this faux populism weve watched rise has to do with selling this idea that government doesnt work and government cant work. Thats true no matter which portion of this elect rate you are talking to. That is part of the challenge theyre up against. Thats part of the idea theyre selling. Its part of the reason its so important for President Biden and his administration to go big, which is theres no better answer to that charge than to prove that government actually has the capacity to deliver and create change in your daytoday life. Uhhuh. In the less than a minute we have left, jennifer, your thoughts . I think the Republican Party is confronted with an electorate that is more receptive to government action. They know government is necessary not only in the crises but do big things like infrastructure. They regurgitate these Talking Points or talk about bans on hamburger and Vice President kamalas book supposedly being distributed at childrens shelters. They have not done the hard work or any work in terms of coming up with a policy response. For now its deflect, extraction, exaggeration and soon theyll have to take votes and it will be interesting to see what the wyomings and other State Republicans dont want those. They dont want internet. I think theyre different than these people in congress. With that, we have to leave it there. Thank you very much for coming to the sunday show. Okay, so heres my problem with what senator tim scott said in his response to President Bidens joint session address. He took a complex subject, molded over 400 years, and reduced it to a simpleminded Talking Point Republicans hope will evade the truth. After accusing democrats of using race as, quote, a political weapon, the South Carolina republican, the only black republican in the United States senate, said this. Hear me clearly. America is not a racist country. As tempting as it is, im not getting involved in that argument. Its rhetorical glitter, a distracting annoyance that pops Out Of Nowhere and clings to anyone who engages it. The real issue the country is grappling with is the systemic racism that affects all americans, with Black Americans bearing the brunt of its negative effects. To talk about this is not to engage in, quote unquote, woke supremacy. It is to speak the truth, something senator scott did with great power from the floor of the senate in july 2016. The nation had endured the Police Killings of Philando Castile and alton sterling. And then a gunman killed five Police Officers in an ambush in dallas. Listen to the clarity of senator scotts voice then. In many cities and towns across the nation, there is a deep divide between the black community and Law Enforcement. A trust gap. A tension that has been growing for decades. And as a family, one American Family, we cannot ignore these issues. Because while so many officers do good, some simply do not. Ive experienced it myself. Please remember that in the course of one year, ive been stopped seven times by Law Enforcement officers. Not four. Not five. Not six. But seven times, in one year, as an elected official. Imagine the frustration, the irritation, the sense of a loss of dignity that accompanies each of those stops. Even here, on capitol hill. I recall walking into an Office Building just last year, after being here for five years on the capitol. And the officer looked at me, a little attitude, and said, the pin i know. You, i dont. Show me your i. D. Well, ill tell you that later that evening, i received a phone call from his supervisor, apologizing for the behavior. Mr. President, that is at least the third phone call that ive received from a supervisor or the chief of police since ive been in the senate. So while i thank god i have not endured bodily harm, i have, however, felt the pressure applied by the scales of justice when they are slanted. I have felt the anger, the frustration, the sadness, and the humiliation that comes with feeling like youre being targeted for nothing more than being just yourself. As a fellow black man, i feel his anger, frustration, sadness, and humiliation, right here. But the best part came at the end of senator scotts 2016 speech. Today, however, i simply ask you this. Recognize that just because you do not feel the pain, the anguish of another, does not mean it does not exist. To ignore their struggles, our struggles, does not make them disappear. It simply leaves you blind, and the American Family very vulnerable. Some search so hard to explain away injustice that they are slowly wiping away who we are as a nation. Senator scott of 2016 was absolutely right. To ignore our struggles does not make them disappear. It simply leaves you blind. Something senator scott of 2021 seems to have forgotten. We begin in washington where President Biden is turning up the heat on congress, pushing for quick action on several big ticket agenda items. The president is set to hit the road this week to sell his plans, focused on beefing up Government Programs on infrastructure and childcare to the American People. But on capitol hill, democrats still face an uphill battle. The 4 trillion price tag of those two plans drawing Harsh Criticism from republicans. If youre talking about a scope which is roads and bridges and internet and tunnels and airports and waterways, we can be pretty close. If youre talking about spending hundreds of billions of dollars to benefit Public Service unions, then were far apart. The most important thing is to get it done. People arent looking at the sausagemaking. I appreciate republican colleagues coming forward with infrastructure plans. But are they going to step up and make sure everybody in america is paying for it . The president also urging congress to have a Police Reform bill on his desk by may 25, that being the anniversary of George Floyds death. This morning the republican senator at the forefront of those bipartisan talks says hes optimistic. The things that i offered last year are more popular this year. That gives me r
