Died after getting her single dose. A White House Covid Response Team is sounding alarms about the need for Unvaccinated Americans to get the moderna and pfizer shots if they can. To turn this pandemic around requires more than government action. It requires action from each of us. Not only to protect us but other people in our lives. I believe this is one of the moments where we have to decide who we are as a country. Are we 300 people who happen to live in the same place or are we fellow americans who care for and protect one another. Welcome, all. Doctor, the medical experts have been pushing to get the Johnson Johnson doses back in circulation. I think we will hear this afternoon after the cdc meeting about all of the cases the agency has identified. They will be presented and discussed. They are likely linked to the vaccine, but very rare. The committee will have to decide on what level of precaution to put into place particularly for those people who are most at risk which appear to be younger women. Every single case deserves to be thoroughly investigated. Today it is noted that the risk for blood clots are higher for those who get covid19 than those who get the j j dose. The risk of getting the disease far exceeds incidence of blood clots which are 7 cases out of 7 million . It is the case that the vaccine are safe and effective compared to getting covid. Everybody should get vaccinated who can be. The question for the johnson and johnson vaccine is not whether it is the only vaccine to benefit, but how does it compare to the other vaccines which are options for people. If you are given the case of two very safe vaccines, one of which has a side effect for women, the right choice might be the other vaccine for you. How did they establish these blood clots are related to the vaccine and not related to some other condition the patients had or taking Birth Control pills or some other cause . Thats the Million Dollar question. To echo what the doctor was saying, one task for the committee today is to really try to get some more granular detail on the clinical information on the patients who had this condition. I am listening in to the meeting all day and what we have been educated about are what the traditional risk factors are, which include a history of contraception and risk. They will be looking at those things. To the point of mechanism, the current theory is that there is an autoimmune action triggered and an individual will develop antibodies to the platelet and this causes a cascade of antibodies. And heparin is contra indicated, as well as a treatment called ibg. Lets get to a political diagnosis. The white house is depending on j j, but they also have a problem that supplies are exceeding demand. There is still hesitancy. Some is access, rural areas, some are just antivaxing and some are the trump followers who believe covid isnt a problem. The committee is meeting to speak about j j. This is a unique phase and one where they need to get other americans involved. They are pushing out with a Vaccine Reluctance campaign relying on folks like eva longoria, ryan seacrest, nba, nascar to get involved. They tout statistics. They say 2 3 of Older Americans have been vaccinated. The number of cases in the last week dropped by about ten . The white house told us privately this would be the real challenge when there were more doses out there than people who wanted them. This is where people may go to their primary care Physicians Office and get it. It is right here. Do you want it. And President Biden will deliver his joint address marking 100 days in office. And he will travel to georgia the day following, thursday of next week. And the weather is improving in many parts of the country and they want to be outdoors and dont see the need to wear a mask. How is the white house dealing with the cdcs reluctance to modify its Masking Requirements . I know they dont want to interfere because that would smack of what President Trump was doing. They want science to guide. But based on the science, when you are outside, i am outside right now, this is the safest place to be. But the cdc guidelines say wear a mask when you are outside in public spaces. The white house has steered clear of this conversation but it is a Pressure Point and one where they are facing criticism because the vaccine was presented as a reward. If you get the vaccine you can return to your life as it formerly existed. It is another question they are facing. Some frustration with the cdc, doctor they wont express it, but a lot of the political advisers would certainly want to see a more relaxed advisory right now. Do you think we are getting close to that . I would expect that is going to happen. I think some of this is natural tension. You want the Public Health agency to be clear about what is necessary to be as protective for health as reasonably possible. Of course there is pressure to relax it. But we have seen the cdc has moved in that direction when it has the evidence and i think we will continue to do so. I agree if you are outdoors by yourself, there isnt a reason to wear a mask and i am sure the cdc will say that. Thanks to all of you. Today at 3 00 p. M. Eastern, dr. Anthony fauci will join to talk about the j j vaccine. And president obama is speaking out about the what he is saying has to happen next. Then get a Turkey Footlong from subway®. Today talks are continuing as lawmakers try to work a consensus on police reform, a bill stalled for a year in the senate since the death of george floyd. Joining me now is the head of the Civil Rights Division years ago under president clinton and eugene robinson. Governor patrick, first to you. You said the Chauvin Verdict showed the life Of A Black Man in america does matter. But senate talks are still stalled. The Sticking Point seems to be whether to keep qualified immunity protecting officers and communities from civil cases. The fact is, as you said, this bill has been pending for a year. It was passed overwhelmingly in the house. It has been stuck in the senate for the same reason that reforms locally and in state houses across the country have been stuck. The Police Interest is very powerful. The unions are powerful. And there is a narrative we have been stuck on for a long time, that being tough on time is somehow smart on crime. But when the toughness falls disproportionately on black citizens, that has to be addressed. We have seen more evidence of this as videotapes are released. There is a new poll that people think should be more done to hold police accountable. But we are told on the hill that the qualified officer i am i am kmunt immunity is still a Sticking Point. Polling doesnt seem to move the senate. There is an aspect that may be beneficial. 33 said too much is being done to interfere with police. I hope that congress is able to work this out. I worry that republican senators are worried about the Republican Base and think that those 33 are the primary voters who could toss them out if they dont toe that line. I wonder if republican senators feel they can do what i think is the right thing. Governor patrick may i . Jump in. One of the things that has to happen. And i was so encouraged to see this in chauvins trial is that the good cops have to speak up. They have to talk about how the behavior of the bad cops makes their job harder. We saw witnesses come forward and dismiss the notion that nineplus minutes of an officers knee on a suspects neck is okay. The other thing is we have to start appreciating that there is frequent not always, but frequent disparity between the official record made by the officers involved in an incident and what the videotapes actually say. We have been deferring to police for a long time on the important point that their job is hard. But they do their job differently in certain communities than others. Thats something we have been needing to confront and i am glad to see this administration addressing that. It took the video to come out from darnella frazier. Thats when the police had to change their story because they said it was a medical incident. And fighting against systemic racism. We had another Police Shooting happening near minneapolis just a week before the Chauvin Verdict and another in columbus, ohio as the verdict was coming down. How does the Community Keep faith that things will change . You have to keep hoping and moving forward. Part of that, as president obama said, is politics. We dont have to go into the next period with rose colored glasses. You dont go into this thinking its easy. As governor patrick said, in the Chauvin Trial we heard Police Officers testify and say that what chauvin did was completely inappropriate. That thin blue line of silence disappeared in that trial. That was encouraging. The other thing is video. Departments whose officers wear body cam and where bystanders are able to video what happened. That makes as tremendous difference. That difference is going to sink in to Police Officers and Police Officials that what they say will be either proven or disproven by video eventually. And that can filter back, i hope, into behavior, knowing that whatever you do, people are watching. The other thing that was so different in at the chauvin case was the eyewitnesss. Those eyewitness testimonies. Frazier was only 17 at the time. Our colleague interviewed one of the two alternate who didnt participate in deliberations. But here is how she reacted to the Eyewitness Video and testimony. What stood out to me was the video. They took a still video with his hands in his pocket like i am here to do my job and nobody is going to tell me how to do it. Darnella frazier who recorded all of that. Her words that she kept apologizing all night to mr. Floyd that she couldnt do more to save his life. That hurt me. The jurors react to Human Suffering brought on be inhuman behavior. Its about time. President biden has been trying to move the country from fossil fuels and reduce Greenhouse Gas emissions by 2030. But what about oil and coal workers . How plugging up old and abandoned minds could keep workers in jobs. Montana. A threat lurks beneath the beauty that stretches to the horizon. You can smell it. You can smell that. Dangerous invisible gases spew from oil and gas wells revealed here on infrared cameras. So thats methane . Yes, meth than. 30 times more powerful than carbon dioxide. The Biden Administration wants to wean the u. S. From fossil fuels and says it can create 250,000 jobs by boarding those wells left mind. Behind. He saw this farm littered with unplugged wells from the 1990s. I couldnt get it out of my mind. Once you see it it you have a responsibility to do something about it. Now he runs the well Done Foundation that plugs wells that threaten Drinking Water and climate. The unchecked gases are the equivalent of burning 16 Million Barrels of crude oil every year. Wow 81 . Over limit. Wow. Plugging a well costs 25,000 or more. President bidens Infrastructure Program calls for 16 million to clean up wells and mines. We can put miners and drillers to work capping those wells rather than digging those wells. Capping wells could create 120,000 jobs. It is not a silver bullet, but could match skills with solutions, repairing damage from the past. Joining me now is josh letterman. Thats fascinating. As you point out, it is not going to solve all of the problems, but is there enough jobs to deal with some of the opposition out west to this initiative . This is not going to be a one size fits all solution to the bigger challenge. Some of these jobs in fossil fuels are going to have to go away if the u. S. Is going to move towards a renewable future. But the definitely has always been in the details. They have been trying to match up people with new jobs in places they live and use the skills they already have. John kerry was mocked for suggesting these coal miners could install solar panels. So the idea with this is you already know how to drill an oil well, already in a place where those wells exist and contributing to climate change, can this help create a Just Transition for people who will lose their jobs and position them for greater jobs in the future. Liberty. Liberty. Liberty. Liberty. And now we end the week with the very best kind of breaking news. A report from our kristen welker. She joins us along with her husband john hughes. Here is their story. One of my dreams has always been to be a mom. I wanted to be a journalist. I always said one thing i dont want to do is to sacrifice having family. I just didnt meet the right person until i was in my late 30s, high husband john. I think it was our second date i said i wanted to have kids. I was 40 years old when i married John In March of 2017. We immediately started to try to have a baby. It didnt work. A number of friends recommended we go to dr. Abasi. There wasnt anything unusual. It was reasonably optimistic. She ran tests and thought my best course of action to have a baby would be to do ibf, which i did. The first round it went really well and i thought i am going to be pregnant within the next few months, no problem. I went in to start the process of being able to carry a baby and the doctor determined that the lining of my uterus was too thin to carry a child. I thought okay, lets fix it. There has to be something we can do to fix this. I tried for months. It was really just some of the most difficult months that i can remember because i was going into the doctor in between live shots at work and just feeling like you are a failure, frankly. It was clear that there were days she was getting bad news. She would just sort of break down. After two years of trying to carry my own baby and after having consulted with four different doctors, they all agreed that i wasnt going to be able to carry a child. It was that Fourth Doctor who called me when i was walking into work for one of the busiest days. I was going to cover the Michael Cohen hearings. It was probably the lowest moment and realization that i have ever had. I was sure that we had tried most every protocol available. John and i considered surg si and adoption. Being matched with a surrogate is one of the most extraordinary experiences i have ever had. Our surrogate is amazing. I cant explain how wonderful she has been. Sorry. For her, this was about giving something to us that she felt a deep connection to. She was going to try to carry our baby, and that first try didnt work. Ill never forget when that call came in. I just collapsed into my couch and started crying. Good morning. The united shutdown of america. All of a sudden covid hit. Like so many couples all across the country struggling with infertility, everything stopped. Initially i was devastated by that. It took a lot for john and i to put our heart on the line again after years and years of trying, im having a baby girl with john and we are so excited. It is with the help of a surrogate. Its astounding, the courage that she has shown through all of this, the endurance and resilience. She has managed to perform at so many levels. I would like to follow up with you knowing that we were expecting our first child as i moderated the president ial debate with this little secret i was holding. I cant wait to tell my daughter that. I credit her with the fact i remained calm that night. I want to compliment kristen and john because it took some courage to try this process. What i advised kristen was that she was a miracle and she would also have a miracle, and she has. I wasnt expecting to feel such a strong connection to her already just from seeing her in a monitor. All of the tears setbacks were worth it because shes worth it. We cannot wait for that day when we can actually meet her and hug her and hold her. Joining me now are Kristin Welker and her husband john hughes. Congrat congratulations. We are so emotional. There have been a lot of tears shed today. Watching you as you have gone through this difficult journey. Tell us why you wanted to talk about it so publically. First of all i hope people can see from that report that you were a part of you have been such a source of support and strength for both me and john. We wanted to talk about it publically because i think people who are struggling with infertility feel so alone and frankly whatever you are struggling with, a health issue you feel very alone. Every time you hear someone talk about it and talk out loud about it, i think you feel a little less alone. So thats why john and i really wanted to share our story. Andrea, you have always been from the moment i met you just so supportive of my career but also of my having a family. I think that that has meant the world to me and john. I wanted to share that with other people and to remind not to give up when you are struggling with something. You have been an inspiration to so many of us in so many ways. John, you have called your surrogate a hero. Why is she so special to you . Shes an amazing woman. Shes a young mother. Shes a loving mother. I think for us, here was someone who we never knew. Life brought us together. Shes giving us the most generous gift we could possibly imagine. Shes devoted her Heart And Soul to raising what will be our baby. We just cant thank her enough. Its just an incredibly generous act. We are extremely grateful. We are. If i could just add one thing to that. We felt this immediate connection with her. She is this young mom. When you are in the process of getting to know someone, you have to ask each other questions. We had a lot of questions for her. She had just as many questions for us. Because she wanted to make sure we were going to be good parents. She told us that it had always been her dream to be a surrogate because one of her Family Members struggled with infertility when she was growing up. This is very personal for her. That meant a lot to us. Many people would be amazed, certainly those of us who know you and see you work, would be amazed at how you struggled with all the disappointments and still did your job at such a high level. Covering the white house and then, of course, on the way wonderful news you were going to be expectant parents, you were going to be a mom as you were about to anchor the most high profile debate. Part was leaning on john. It brought us closer together. Our families are so loving and supportive and our work families. You are my d. C. Mom. You are at the top of the list of people who supported us. Then i did talk to a therapist who specializes in fertility and infertility, who has really helped me to navigate what has been such a difficult process. Its something thats covered by insurance. I think its so important to people for people to ask for help if they feel like they need it. At that point in time, i needed it. It really made all of the difference, andrea. John, this is National Infertility awareness week. What do you hope other people struggling with this can gain from your story . Sure. You are not alone. This is a very long journey. Theres a lot of heartache along the way. It can feel isolating at times. You may not be sure who to confide in. There are many others out there who are struggling with infertility. There are many other families who found amazing ways to expand their families. I would just encourage everyone to remain hopeful and to speak out and seek help when you can, just as kristin mentioned. You wrote a beautiful letter to your baby girl that you have taken to bring her into this world. Talk to me about what you hope she learns from the letter and from your story. I end the letter by saying to our little girl, who is due now in just a few weeks, i say, even though we havent met you yet, we have loved you forever. Thats what i hope she takes from this. That we have loved her so much for the longest time. Thats why we fought so hard to bring her here. She is just going to be surrounded by so much love when she gets here. We just cant wait to tell her about her extraordinary journey, because it is a reflection of how loved she is. I know there were a lot of costs, difficulties associated with this. You will deal with all of these issues, you are doing a series of reports on infertility and surrogacy starting tomorrow when you coanchor Saturday Today from this very studio. We love you so much. I love you. Thank you. Thank you, andrea. So Many Blessings coming into your world right now. Thank you for all the love and support. We could not have done it without you. Its a whole family here.
