Hearing closing arguments in the Derek Chauvin murder trial. While the timing of deliberations and a verdict is still unknown, it is all but guaranteed americans will react in streets across this country. As we come on the air this evening, cities are getting ready, planning for the potential of unrest. Especially minneapolis, where the trial is being held, where the horrific death of george floyd was caught on camera last year. Authorities in New York City also preparing for the verdict. No days off for officers of the nations Largest Police force until further notice. The nation has spent weeks reliving George Floyds death. Have gotten daily reminders what happened to floyd is all but isolated, including in brooklyn center, minnesota, where police shot and killed 20yearold daunte wright, and in chicago, where police shot and killed a 13yearold. Those are two of 64 Police Involved killings that happened since testimony began in the Derek Chauvin trial. The New York Times found more than half killed were black and will tino. That is proof of a problem in need of congressional action. In addition to having a president thats willing to do the work, we also have an Attorney General willing to admit that reform is, in fact, needed. He spent his first weeks scaling back trump era policies that protect police from prosecution. It is a start, sit a baseline, but Where Do We Go From Here . Lets discuss with our panel. Retired detective mark claxton, director of the black Law Enforcement alliance. Britney cunningham, host of the undistracted podcast. And Kanesha Grant from howard university. Heres what general psaki said just this week. Too often in this country Law Enforcement uses unnecessary force, too often resulting in the death of black and brown americans. The president , again, has said he believes we need police reform. Hes calling for congress to send that to his desk. Britney, it is, of course, an improvement to have an administration that is willing to admit that there is a problem. I think you and i would agree that that should be just the baseline. Where do you want to see them go from here . Alicia, i agree with you that this is a good sign, but it is certainly not the absolute bar that we should be aiming for. This weekend, i told the folks, some folks the story about being a teacher, and the first thing we learned being a teacher is the art of backwards planning. Which means that we set the bar as high as possible, because low expectations yield mediocre results. And if we set the bar at reform, then well only get mediocre results. And i say this as someone who has been working in this for quite a few years now and have realized, over time, that if this system, if this institution could be reformed, then it would have happened already. Community policing is the concept that was introduced in the 1960s. If that was going to be the solution, if body cams were going to be the solution, then we could have seen traction by now. But as you say in the data youve already presented in the New York Times, this is not slowing down. Accountability is not a deterrent, as shown by the fact that these killings are happening just miles from the chauvin trial. We need to push from the outside and the inside to set the bar as high as possible and to reenvision not policing but Public Safety from the ground up. Creating safety with housing, safe clean air and water, and making sure the kinds of communities that we believe where we keep one another safe is what were aiming towards. You know, kanesha, the Cook County State Attorneys Office confirmed today that an attorney has been placed on administrative leave for failing to fully present the facts presenting the adam vallejo shooting. But at the same time, you have the Chicago Police union chief saying the shooting was 100 justified. I wonder both what you make of those seemingly conflicting messages and how that fits into britneys larger point how this cannot be reformed but needs to be reimagined. I think what this suggests to me is that there is something wrong in the system. There is system that, in this instance, steams like somebody did in order to not get caught. And it ended up being the case that we got full information, we saw the body cam and people are reacting here. So i agree that the system that we have is broken. That we have worked for decades to try to make it work and it does not work. So it doesnt make sense to me to continue trying to make this thing thats untenable work. We need something new, and the idea that we cant see or we cant imagine a better thing doesnt mean that there is not a better thing. There are many scholars, activists working on this for decades. You can listen to them and you can see whether its possible to implement the things that they want and not be afraid of what it might look like to step into a new future, where we have systems that dont work to kill kids like him. I think you are exactly right, that the fear is what holds up so much, and people dont want to see that progress actively seeking to stoke that fear. Mark, lets talk a little bit about what is happening at the federal level. You have Attorney General Merrick Garland rescinding trump era limits on decrees, used to enforce reforms in Police Departments accused of widespread misconduct. Can you break this down for us . What does that mean for Police Departments now, compared to the guidelines under trumps doj . I think its significant, because you will have Police Agencies and entities now who will face these Consent Decrees. But this goes this weeks to something britney spoke about. Weve been here before where we had full freedom to enact Consent Decrees, and it hasnt been a significant change that would instill confidence in the general public. And in particular and specifically with black and brown people. I think whats missing in the discussions that we have, even from those who claim to be allies and who are supportive of reimagination of police or just restructuring police, et cetera, whats absent for much of the conversation is the role that race plays. We have to get to the point where we speak specifically about what is guiding much of what ails us, and that is race. The uncomfortable subject, but until we get to the point where we can lay that on the table and begin the Structure Systems that address and deal with racial inequities and racial brutality, Police Sponsored or otherwise, then we find ourselves spinning our wheels. So its necessary to have these discussions. Its necessary to have Consent Decrees and federal relief when the opportunity presents itself. But until we get to the point where were honest enough to have this discussion about race, were just moving in circles. A discussion about race, a discussion about racial bias, a discuss about racism itself. Were awaiting the chauvin trial verdict. Cities are preparing for the possibility of unrest. Nypd, as i told you earlier, officers have been told they cant take unscheduled days off. What does that say about faith in the system . Weve had no reason to have faith in this system. Not since emmett till, not since rodney king, certainly not since michael brown, Trayvon Martin or the names that we can call out from just the last few years. Alicia, if you were dating someone who did you wrong and you kept trying and kept trying, i would tell you to leave them. We have to decide to disinvest from a system that continues to harm us with no hope, of being fixed, with no possibility of being redeemed. And with no evidence to show us that it can improve. Adam was 13 years old. An entire system conspired to call him guilty for his own death. He was unarmed, his hands were in the air, and even if they werent, a system that decides whether or not a 13yearold can live or die is not a system i want to invest in. Black and brown young people from chicago and from across this country have been call thing system what9 is for decades. Its high time we invest in them instead of systems that continue to kill us. Mark, britney, kanesha, thank you all so much. Next, Voting Rights are under attack. We have reverend dr. William barber on where the fight goes from here. And Stephen Miller, the architect of trumps policies, is finding new ways to influence the national debate. And later, joe bidens plan to end americas longest war. The decision through the eyes of the generation that has spent 20 years fighting it. But first, a look at the other big stories were tracking. Richard . Very good sunday. More ridge vigils are planned. Doctors for Alexy Navalny say he could die within days. Hes been on a Hunger Strike for two weeks. The Biden Administration says the kremlin will be punished if he dies. The cdc says half of all adults in the u. S. Have received the covid vaccine. The president s Chief Medical Adviser dr. Anthony fauci predicts the Johnson Johnson vaccine will return to market this week. Alicia is back with more American Voices right after this break. Rican voices right this break t lines. Limu emu doug excuse me maam, did you know that Liberty Mutual customizes your Car Insurance so you only pay for what you need . Thank you hey, hey, no, no, limu, no limu only pay for what you need. Liberty. Liberty. Liberty. Liberty. The latest test for democracy playing out this texas. A bill restricting Voting Access will soon get a full vote in the states house chamber. Similar bills are being considered in Battleground States like florida and michigan. But advocates fighting back just gained a new ally. More than a dozen of the nations top law firms, willing to fight these efforts in court. Organizers say the army of Election Law Experts stand ready to dispatch at a moments notice. Joining us, reverend dr. William barber, president of repairs of the breach and cochair of the poor peoples campaign. Reverend, you helped organize lawsuits against restrictive voting measures passed in North Carolina 2013. It was a long fight in the courts as these things often are. How will an army of Election Law Experts fight these Voting Suppression Efforts . Its a critical part. When we fought and won in North Carolina, we were able to go to Corporate Law firms and they came alongside the Group Forward justice to help lead these lawsuits. Remember, the state will use state money to defend these regressive Voter Suppression laws. So this is an important development. One of the things we must do is extremely important, and when groups like the naacp with my friends, when they asked these corporations to help and they do and they help provide these lawyers, that is critical to combine them with other lawyers. We have to have a fullon legal battle against Voter Suppression for the sake of this democracy. Reverend barber, you often talk about how this fight, the fight for Voting Rights, is a moral issue. And the importance of one person, one vote. The implication, of course, being that the people who are on the other side of this fight are acting immorally. How do you make that line stick . Yeah. Well, our constitution says that we are to establish justice. Voting suppression does not establish justice, It Disestablishes justice. Our constitution says equal protection under the law Voter Suppression doesnt provide that. Our constitution says in article xv nobody can deny or abridge the right to vote. So when you do that, it is immoral. When you suppress the right to vote, as ive often side, we dont let pets and puppies vote, we let people vote, 18 years old, so when you suppress the vote, you are suppressing peoples humanity. Youre saying theyre not worthy of full citizenship. You are suppressing who they are. Thats why its immoral. Thats why the church has engaged with people of fate in fighting for Voting Rights. Another thing, we have to understand the fight for Voting Rights is also a race and economic fight. Dr. King said that the reason so much attempt to suppress the vote of black and white people is the fear of black and white people joining together in a way to overturn the ruling class and open up a different kind of economics in this country. And so there are three other things we think we have to do in terms of corporations. One is justice and civil rights organizations must call out companies and corporations and return money to those who, on the one hand, try to give money to black organizations, but then on the other hand, they still support state and federal politicians that support Voter Suppression. Two, we must challenge the u. S. Chamber of congress that opposes living wage laws and Voting Rights because it shows Voting Suppression is a race issue. Three, providing pro bono lawyers is critical. Fourth, we must tell corporations, you must pool your Financial Support for senators like manchin and mcdonnell who are filibustering Voting Rights legislation. While we have boycotting, thats one strategy. But if you move a Baseball Game from the city of georgia and it hurts workers, but the ceo still gives money to republican senators like mcconnell, who are blocking Voting Rights, theyre playing a game. We need people to remove the Funding Source of these senators who have, for years now, used every trick they could to block restoration of the Voting Rights act, section five and passing new Voting Rights laws. Reverend barber, thank you always for your time. Next, Stephen Miller strikes again. Going after the current president for maintaining one of the previous guys refugee policies. A policy Stephen Miller advised President Trump on. So what is he on. Thats next. E on thats next. Sales are down from last quarter but we are hoping things will pick up by q3. Yeah. Uh. Doug . Psst psst all good Stephen Miller solidifying his reputation as an antiimmigrant lightning rod, attacking joe bidens initial plan to maintain President Trumps cap on refugees allowed into the u. S. Millers former boss was okay with 15,000 refugees per year. Miller says the number should be zero, which makes no sense. A shock to no one, but its a tell about the narrative still making rounds among republicans. Whether this weekends Backlash Forces her to drop the plans, georgia congresswoman Margorie Taylor greene and others have been toying with the idea of creating an America First caucus in the house and limit immigration to only those who can contribute economicty and demonstrate a respect for American Culture and rule of law. Joining me now, the author of hatemonger, Stephen Miller, donald trump and the White Nationalist agenda. Jean, i want to play some sound of george w. Bush on cbs this morning, talking about his regrets over immigration. Take a listen. Its been 15 years. I know it. Still nothings been done. A lot of executive orders. All that means is congress isnt doing its jobs. Is it one of the biggest disappointments of your presidency . Yes, it really is. I campaigned on immigration reform, i made it clear to the voters this is something i intended to do. So jean, not a lot of surprises here. He has admitted as much before. But what i was struck by is how the white supremacist influence on this debate has gone from covert to extremely overt. How much is the republican platform on Immigration Change since bush left office . Very much so. And the marorie Taylor Greene America First caucus is an example of that. This is how the laundering of White Supremacy into the main stream works. They had to backtrack because of the fact that, you know, it was a little too overt and obvious over the past few years under the Trump Administration, the Republican Party realized in order to main stream White Supremacy, you have to do it through dog whistles and spoonfeed it through hysteria around immigration, Painting Immigration as, you know, an existential threat to the United States, when, in fact, were facing unprecedented Population Stagnation and immigrants commit crimes at a much lower rate than people born in the United States. So the framing of the Immigration Debate as being, you know, an existential threat to the United States or about Homeland Security has contributed to white supremacist views becoming more and more main stream. People like Margorie Taylor greene taking these offensive steps and just using more overtly racist language. You wrote an entire book on Stephen Miller. Miller just started this new group America First legal. The goal is to sue the Biden Administration for what it deems unlawful actions. Jean, can you tell us what you know about millers plans, and what this tells you about the direction more generally that theyre going to be moving in . Well, hes trying to branch this group as the conservative aclu. In the same way that he tries to brand himself as a quote unquote conservative Social Justice warrior, you know, with a smirk on his face. Obviously, his goals have nothing to do with Social Justice or civil liberties, and they have nothing to do with putting America First. For Stephen Miller, this has always been about trying to reengineer demographics. When you look at his policies, they were about strangling legal access into the United States, dismantling the asylum system, slashing Refugee Admissions to record lows, choking access to green cards, and the Trump Administration occasionally tried to spin this as going after criminals and cartels. But who they were after when you look at the overarching policy was famfamilies. This is what his group has been intending to do. Theyre already supporting law suits against the Biden Administration on immigration issues to make sure there are no steps towards the more humane immigration policy. All right. Jean, as this continues to develop, i want you to come back and i want us to continue to talk about it. Thank you so much for your reporting. Congresswoman visited the border this week and is here next with exclusive video from her trip. And two veterans who served in Afghanistan Weigh in on joe bidens man to end the two decade war. We are back with an exclusive look inside the customs and Border Protections temporary Overflow Facility for unaccompanied Migrant Children in texas. This congresswoman got a look firsthand this week at the conditions inside and able to speak with some of the migrant boys detained there. California congresswoman annette barragan joins me now, the chair of the Homeland Security subcommittee on border security. Thanks for joining us. Tell us about your overall experience at the facility and what you wanted those boys to take away from your visit. Well, thank you for having me. Being there was a little heartbreaking to see these kids. But i was there to get information to see how things were working in the new facility, to talk to these kids, to hear about their experience. But also to make sure they were having access to things like, you know, food and water and phone calls. Weve read the reports and the stories. So part of my job is to do oversight. So i like to get down to talk to them in their native hang wage to explain what im doing there, and to do a little Show Of Hands to see how many people, how many of these kids can make a phone call to their parents and Family Members. Many of them are scared. They want to be reunited with their Family Members here in the United States. And in some cases, i had a group of kids surrounding me, asking me, you know, lots of questions, because they didnt know what was next. I want to play another sound bite from your visit. This is about what weve been talking about, their ability to make phone calls. Take a listen. So congresswoman, clearly something is breaking down there, if youre being told that they can communicate with their families, and then these kids are telling you we havent used the phone, we havent been able to, you were even asking the question that comes to my mind as a mom, as a journalist, do you have their number, can you get in touch with them . Your sense of if there is enough communication with these kids if they can contact their family and when, and what it would take to remedy Something Like that. Let me first say that my experience was that i had more access to these kids and the ability to take photos and make recordings, something i didnt have in the prior administration. So that was a huge difference, and we do hear the officials say, you know, here are the phone booths and they tell you what kids are allowed to do. But the objective for me was to hear directly from these kids to make sure a, they knew and see how many of them knew they could make phone calls. When i did the little poll there, i was a little concerned about it. I did speak to the chief of the facility and say look, why dont we start cleanup signage in english and spanish so they know there are other signs there telling them what they can do and giving them information. So would be just an added player. And the phone call is comforting for these kids, to hear a familiar face and talk to somebody. Also were Hearing Reports from attorneys that parents are looking for their kids not knowing where they are. So that would be an easy remty to make sure theres signage up. We are told that kids are being told when theyre processed through that they can make a phone call. Clearly some of these kids were not told or didnt get that information. We could give them a little card in english and their native language that maybe tells them about what they can ask for and what they can do. So, you know, we are seeing the administration is making an effort and the agency is making this effort. But we just got to make sure to continue to do all we can to improve conditions and make it as best as we can under difficult circumstances. At the end oh of the day, we have to invest in these countries and in the northern triangle countries so these kids dont Feel The Need to make this journey thats very dangerous. It was clear to see in talking to some of the kids that they were afraid to talk to, which is why i had to go out of my way to explain who i am and what im doing there to build some rapport to chair with me some concerns they may have. Congresswoman barragan, thank you. We reached out to customs and Border Protection for a statement. They wrote in start that cpb places the highest priority on the safest and wellbeing of persons in custody to include Child Welfare considerations, adding that cbp has hired caregivers at facilities, Holding Children to provide additional Child Welfare support. But at the same time, he has no intention of taking our eye off the ball. We have the capacity from repositioning our capabilities over the horizon to continue to suppress the Terrorist Threat in afghanistan. National security adviser Jake Sullivan making clear that joe biden plans to end americas longest War In Afghanistan. A war spanning two decades and four president s. Its lasted so long that it also spans the entire millennial generation. The result, a generation with a view of the world unlike most, a unique understanding of how willing this country is to fight for democracies elsewhere. New Washington Post data reveals millennials made up half of those killed in afghanistan. The average age of those killed in afghanistan was just 12 years on 9 11. A study found iraq and afghanistan veterans were the most diverse in history. Joining me now, Two Americans Who fought in afghanistan, u. S. Air force veteran pam, founder of vets for the people. And mike brean, president and ceo of human rights first. Pam, lets start with the full withdrawal of troops by september 11. There was a striking quote from a veteran in the New York Times who said as a veteran, how are you processing this announcement, and what do you make of the timing . You know, i think the word that comes to mind is somber. Somber because i remember so vividly what it felt like to be told that we were leaving afghanistan in 2014, many of us having to carry the moral injury that some of our friends were killed unnecessarily, because our government did not have a strategy, could not even rationalize. Whether it was our government or Corporate Executives were having us chase ghosts. Not only should we have left long ago, theres a question about our identity, who do we want to be in the world . You know, do we this war cost 2. 26 trillion and 241,000 lives. And the weight of that is tremendous, particularly in a time where our own country is suffering so much, and its unclear. Its unclear what have we done in afghanistan and will it actually leave the Afghan People any better, what is their voice in all of this . Mike, your reaction to the Withdrawal Announcement . I think i agree with a lot of what pam has to say, but i would also say, for me the most important thing to remember is the end of americas War In Afghanistan is not tend of the War In Afghanistan for the Afghan People. The United States has and pam is right about the cost to our country. But this is not over for the Afghan People. Their human rights, their futures, their lives matter. I think how this is remembered and how we as veterans feel about this is going to defend on how we leave. Do we leave with honor. And that hinges to me on not abandoning the afghans who stood with us. There are about 17,000 afghans still on a special visa Program Pipeline waiting for a chance to come to safety, targeted by the taliban and other organizations. And we are advocating that the Biden Administration do what weve done in the past. Do what weve done with vietnamese allies in the 70s with kurdish iraqis, in the 90s, including refugees from kosovo, and bring them to a safe location. Guam has been used, so we do see yet more needless death and destructive in the wake of this decision. Pam, i want to play some sound from bidens announcement on wednesday regarding the multigenerational aspect oh of this war. Lets listen. War in afghanistan was never meant to be a multigenerational undertaking. We were attacked. We went to war with clear goals. We achieved those objectives. Bin laden is dead and al qaeda is degraded in iraq in afghanistan. And its time to end the forever war. Pam, what lessons do you hope are learned from this war . Umm, such a big question. But i think people are all of us Cannot Abdicate the responsibility of a war and multiple wars. Were in multiple engagements currently. We the not abdicate the responsibility, and our elected officials cant abdicate the responsibility of this happening in the background. Did we all vote to be in afghanistan for this long . No, we didnt. And my question is also, we must actually grapple with what does ending the wars mean . Will the Biden Administration liquidate all of the Military Bases in afghanistan . Will he actually will this administration be the one that is bold and grave and decides to pivot away from a racist, Global War On Terror that did not make us safe or more free, but did, in fact, enrich many people in defense corporate world. Whats really galling to me is his announcement does not account for the 18,000 contractors that as of this january were in afghanistan. So, we can talk about lowering troops. But our generation in particular will not be satisfied with saying were still going to leave special operations units, the units that have been burnt out, overused, and exploited without any grounded strategy from d. C. And so thats i really hope that all of us see that these issues, while they may feel far away may feel far away, its paid with our tax dollars, with the lives of our daughters and sons. And its time for us to also push this administration when they say end the forever wars, it should mean ending a reckless Foreign Policy that has not made us safer. Mike, part of the reason i wanted to talk with you and i wanted to talk with pam is that this was a war that impacted our generation, millennial generation. Sometimes people use millennials with kids or young people. In reality this say generation that cake came grew up in the wake of 9 11. As someone who thinks about Foreign Policy and use of force, when you step back were talking about generationally the largest voting bloc in america. How has this shaped the way we see americas role on the world stage . Yeah, i mean go ahead, mike. I think we i mean, as you say, alicia, this war in many ways, The War In Iraq defined my whole life. I was in the senior year of college when 9 11 happened, brand new rotc Second Lieutenant when i invaded iraq, having spoken against the war as a college student. I was in my early 20s when i left the platoon in afghanistan. One of the guys i served with went back and was killed seven years later. I remember standing with old friends and saying goodbye to him after he gave his life, seven years after we served together. When we served together the war was already longer than the second world war. Weve done refugee Work Associated with it advocacy Work Associated with it, we as a country, i think, have to learn some lessons. One is that a warbased response to problems like terrorism is not effective. One of them is that abandoning our legal processes and our values in the face of threats is not war. And above all, i think weve got to learn that respecting human rights pam and mike, my friends, thank you both so much. Well be right back. Nds, thank you both so much well be right back. Gum damage. What do you say to these lawmakers who are trying to claim that wearing one is a safety risk . Honestly, this sounds like, you know, just authoritarian law being veiled in like a safety issue. This is a violation of civil liberties. This is not just in sport but this is in daytoday life, where france is proposing that women who choose wear hijab, banning it in general. Its far outside of sport. There are 5. 7 million muslims in france and they are disproportionately will be affected by this ban if it does go through. Right. And were talking about muslims and specifically talking about muslim women. This is part of why i want to talk to you. Muslim women already the target of 70 of islamaphobia incidents according to the collective against islamophobia. How do you see sexism, racism, islamophobia all conspiring in a policy like this . This sounds so much like a push toward fascism in a way, to demonize hijab, to demonize muslims in a way where we globally are beginning to accept this idea that we can push and dictate what women wear. Its so problematic. I cannot stress enough that a ban of hijab not just in france this will have Ripple Effects around the globe. France really applauds itself in being, you know, a champion of human rights. This is a direct violation of human rights, religious freedom, civil liberties. And to tell women what they should not be wearing in 2021, honestly, at this point is laughable. Ibtihaj, thank you for spending time with us tonight. That is all the time i have for today.
