Im lindsey reiser. Y im kendis gibson. We have our correspondents standing by with all the stories were covering. We begin with the Murder Trial of Derek Chauvin with Closing Arguments set to begin tomorrow. This comes on theeg heels of growing protests over other policeinvolved incidents. Nbcsci Megan Fitzgerald has mo on this. Good morning. Good morning. D hundreds of People Gathering outside the Brooklyn Center Police department last night in what wasst the seventh day of f protests. It was mainly peaceful. People gathering, chanting, wanting , peace, wanting justic. But it was different from what went saw Friday Night when near 100 people were taken into to custody. We also heard last night from Maxine Waters of california who addressed the crowd. Take a listen to what her message was. This is a very difficult time in the V History of this countr. Despite the fact that we know that people of color are having have been killed too often, bunarmed young men in particular. Black men. I we have to persist in calling for justice. We havein to let people know th were not going to be satisfied unless we get justice in these cases. The congresswoman in town ahead of closing Arguments Tomorrow in c the Derek Chauvin trial where well see the prosecutionl and the Defense Speak directly to the jury. Summing up their arguments for one last time, tying together all the evidence thats been presented overe the last three weeks before the jury goes in to deliberations. Well also see the judge issuing instructions to jurors, making sure they are clear on what they need to consider on each of the charges against derekf chauvin. Kendis andch lindsey. Still so striking to see what an Armed Fortress the courthouse is there in minneapolis. For more on what to expect in tomorrows Closing Arguments weres joined by Retired Serget heather taylor, Spokesperson And Business manager for the ethical society of police. And kirk burkehalter, a professor at new York Law schooy and a Retired Nypd detective. Welcome to both of you. What are your expectations going into tomorrow. Ng and if there isnt a speedy trial in ithis, what does it s to you . Trial in this, what does to you my expectation would be that the prosecution will proceed in the methodical fashion which, by which they presented their case. So they have to prove every element of the crime beyond a reasonable doubt, and they will certainly focus on Derek Chauvins intent and focus a lot of their closing on the evidence that was set forth by the various medical professionals, which was quite strong, which will focus on causation to prove their point. On the other side, the defense is going to focus on reasonable doubt, trying to sow those seeds of reasonable doubt, highlighting the past Drug Use and so forth. I dont think theyll try to prove Derek Chauvin is innocent. Theyll just try to sow the seeds of reasonable doubt. If the jury is out for quite a while, which i suspect they may be, not because the facts are not clear but because its an important case. Theres a lot of evidence to weigh through. A lot of testimony and so forth. I wouldnt read too much into that. Professor, well stick with you for a second. Signs in the backdrop of this trial here weve had other incidents that were watching. Daunte wright, adam toledo, karen nazario. Jurors are instructed not to watch the news. Do you think they know whats going on and how that could play into their mindset here . I certainly believe that they do know whats going on. I think its almost impossible between family members, friends, whats all over the media. The common thread between all these incidents is the police, but once you move past that, theres a the incidents diverge. So the matter that theyre sitting on, this is one of the most heinous acts that we have witnessed in quite some time. The other incidents, they start to diverge. You have the shooting where reaching for the taser instead of the firearm, which, you know, i dont know how to characterize that, but its just not the same as Derek Chavin who had this depraved indifference and this shooting in chicago which involves the police but its more about what type of decision the Police Officer made and then there are so many social justice issues with regard to the unfortunate and tragic demise of this child being on the street at 2 30 in the morning. So while they are aware, the Chauvin Case is very much an outliar given the depravity of the act. So i dont think that that will weigh too heavily on them and juries take their responsibility quite seriously, thoirsically speaking. Heather, weigh in on all of this. Were you disappointed that Derek Chauvin is not testifying at all . Did you want to hear from him . Absolutely, i wanted to hear from him. I think everyone in the country wanted to hear from him. To understand how someone could place their knee in the neck of another Human Being for over eight minutes. His indifference was disgusting. We wanted to know why. Why was your hand in your pocket as you were murdering this man . Its typical that he would not testify. I believe he would have hurt himself if he would have testified. But absolutely, i think myself included, with Everyone Else who wanted him to testify to get some understanding of this. Many say it could have benefited him because it doesnt post him as this monster who is there are in more than 9 minutes, but instead you get to humanize him a little more. I think its impossible to humanize someone that did something like that. Okay. He was an absolute monster. Sergeant, last question to you here. We want to point out some New York times reporting that since testimony began on March 29th in this case, at least 64 people have died at the hands of Law Enforcement nationwide with black and latino people representing more than half of the dead. Right now, Where Do We Go From Here . It starts with hiring. It starts with the police academy. Who we hire is significant. We can fix the problem, some of the problem, on the front end by not hiring these people that we know have issues with mental health, that have issues with race. And we can put them on the Police Departments and once theyre here, well have to pay out these lawsuits, well have the George Floyds of this world, the Adam Toledos of this world as a result of that. So it starts with hiring. Heather taylor and kirk burkehalter. Thank you both so much for joining us. Were learning more about the Mass Shooting at a Fedex Facility in indianapolis. We now have a photo of the eight people who were killed. A former employee opened fire. Their ages ranging from 19 to 74. Two of them were 19 years old. The vigil was held yesterday. You see video of it here. To honor the lives lost following the tragic events on thursday. Indianapolis police now say 19yearold Brandon Scott Hull legally purchased two Assault Rifles they say were used in the Mass Shooting. Authorities previously seized his Shotgun In March Of Last Year and that was after an interview with the fbi after his own mom raised concerns about his mental state. Were also learning more about two deadly shooting in just the past 24 hours. Three people were killed and 24ths injured during a shooting at a bar in kenosha, wisconsin. They are trying to track down the gunman and they believe its an isolated case. In omaha, nebraska, one person is dead following a shooting at a mall. The second shooting at the same mall in little over a month. Situations like these and the Mass Shootings in indianapolis are why Gun Control advocates and progressives continue to urge President Biden to take some sort of action. Msnbcs Correspondent Monica Alba is in wilmington, delaware, where the president is traveling. Monica, i know the flag at the White House is down at Half Staff yet again for another day. Is the president hearing this pressure from the country . Certainly, kendis and lindsey. This is something weve now seen really throughout the course of his first almost 90 days in office because, as you guys have been reporting on so extensively there have been so many shootings and even Mass Shootings in that time. So this is now a president who has had to speak out on that several times. He has really expressed his Frustration And Outrage saying theres only so much he can do within his own executive authority. But we do know the White House is looking at potential additional action. They are trying to see within the Department Of Justice whether there are other orders that they can do. Again, unilaterally. Even though they want to urge congress to act and they want lawmakers to take up these bills that have already passed the house but are stalled in the senate. This was a President Biden on friday in the Rose Garden who really wanted to essentially say, im trying, but theres only so much i can do. But we also have to look at the political signals that he has sent in terms of where his priorities have been legislatively. We know that the first few months were all dedicated to the covid relief plan. Now hes more focused on infrastructure and jobs. And he himself has conceded it has to be one major issue at a time. But it doesnt mean that he Cant Work on a parallel track on something related to Gun Violence Prevention. Lets also look at how resources are being used. There isnt a gun czar, for example, in the administration. There isnt a Task Force or a guns cabinet. Those are all things weve seen dedicated to other issues. You have progressives and other groups calling on him to do more but he has to admit here that hes limited in his scope and there is only so much that the White House can do. And again, this is a problem that isnt going to be solved overnight. Thats President Bidens main message. He has said on something like infrastructure, he hopes he can get progress on that in a matter of weeks but when it comes to gun safety, thats likely to take months, if not years. And he, of course, has been working on that issue for all of his time as senator, Vice President and now president. He would be the first to say its not an easy task and theres a lot left to be done. Monica alba, traveling with the president in wilmington, thank you. Open vaccine appointments but no takers. Vaccine Hesitancy is on the rise in the united states as dozens of states see mounting Covid Case loads and the global Death Toll passes 3 Million this weekend. In mississippi, Vaccine Supply is outpacing demand despite the fact that 30 of retirementaged residents there have yet to be vaccinated. Msnbc reporter Gary Grumbach is in jackson to explain. Gary, good morning. Reporter good morning. Mississippi has one of the lowest rates of Covid Vaccination in the country. 1 in 3 people over the age of 65 are not vaccinated but its not an issue that theres not enough supply here anymore. Now its a demand issue. What is being done about that . Theres another reason for that as well. Let me talk you through some of them that have been here long before covid was here in mississippi. First, rural access. 54 of residents here in mississippi say they live somewhere thats rural. Its a lot logistically harder to get these vaccines to the people that need it the most in the rural areas, especially with this J J Pause on that vaccine. It also comes down to politics as so much does these days. Theres 45 of conservatives, according to a recent Quinnipiac Poll say that they are not going to get a coronavirus vaccine. That matters in a state here like mississippi because almost 60 of the people in mississippi voted for Donald Trump in 2020. It also comes down to trust. And as so many things do, it comes down to trust and with a significant black population here in the state, 40 of the population is black in mississippi. Only 40 of that 40 has actually gotten a coronavirus vaccine. Theres a significant portion of this state that has yet to go. What are they doing about it . I talk to dr. Thomas dobbs, the State Health Officer here in mississippi. Theyre trying to get people where the vaccine is. Theyre trying to get to the schools, the churches, the Community Health centers and trying to make that happen for folks and also happens to be just one on one conversations that sometimes do the trick. Heres what dr. Dobbs had to say. So different people need different messages, and were trying to tailor those messages to the subgroups of people that have those questions. And as much as we can, we want to make sure that people can ask the questions they need to ask to get the right information to make the best choices. So, you know, dr. Dobbs has been in contact with the White House and their Community Partners and specific partners to really get something to like the Flu Vaccine has. This heartbreaking image of the queen sitting alone in the chapel all because of covid restrictions. Prince William And Harry were shown walking together and speaking after the funeral. Harrys first appearance with the Royal Family since that Bombshell Interview with oprah winfrey. Joining us from london is foreign correspondent sarah harmon. Good morning. Good morning. I think you hit the nail on the head talking about the image of her majesty seated alone in the pews on the cusp of her 95th birthday. Forced to mourn her husband of more than 70 years all by herself. It was a really humanizing moment and a reminder of how much this pandemic has touched All Of Us. In some cases, no matter how much Wealth Or Privilege you have, you can still really be suffering. I want to show you how the british press is covering this, this morning. Weve got this picture of the queen alone in her grief with a tear in her eye. This paper showing the queen alone in the pew and writing, the loneliest goodbye. The Queen And Prince phillip were married for more than 70 years. And for many brits, they had never known a life without the Queen And Prince phillip. Were now looking forward to a real changing of the guard, if you will. Were expecting to see the younger royals really step up and, to that end, All Of Us royal watchers were waiting on tenterhooks to see what the reaction between the princes, William And Harry, would be like. For anyone hoping for a reconciliation, what we saw yesterday, this conversation between the two brothers, is probably as much as we realistically could have hoped for. And it is a sign that hopefully relations between the brothers are warming up a bit. They do have their work cut out for them. Her majesty is 95 years old. We do expect that other members of the Royal Family, senior working royals, like Prince William, will be stepping up in coming days and accompanying the queen on her formal engagements. Remember her majesty is all about duty, keeping calm, carrying on, and i think we will see her return to work sooner rather than later. Lindsey . You could see a hint of that passing of the torch there where right after Prince William died we heard from Prince Charles first when he was the one who came out and made that statement about his dear papa. President biden is reacting and condemning the Prison Treatment of vladimir putins most prominent critic as reports emerge that he is on the verge of death. Alexei navalnys physician saying he could die at any moment. He is currently in his third week of a Hunger Strike in a prison outside of moscow. Sky News Correspondent Diana magny is in moscow for us. Good morning. Whats the latest on his condition that were learning . Good morning. Well, this is day 19 of his Hunger Strike. The Hunger Strike hes calling because he is not allowed a doctor that he trusts in to see him because he was suffering from acute Back And Leg pain. He wanted to see his own doctor. The prison authorities wouldnt allow that and said that hes getting the medical attention that he needs, and thats why hes on a Hunger Strike. Now his lawyers, who are allowed still in to see him have brought out Test Results which suggest that he has extremely high potassium levels in his blood which could lead to Kidney Failure and possible cardiac arrest. So theyre saying he may only have days to live. Interestingly, just in the last few minutes, his team have announced a nationwide rally this wednesday, which is the same day as President Putin gives his state of the Nation Address because they say that desperate times require desperate measures. President biden reacted to reports of Alexei Navalnys deteriorating health. This is what he had to say. Do you know about navalny . Hes apparently really, really sick right now. Is he really . What would you say to him . Thats total inappropriate. Total, total inappropriate. It will be interesting to see how many people decide to turn out to this rally, which navalnys team have said should be their largest ever. After those two largescale protests at the beginning of january when Alexei Navalny returned from germany, Tens Of Thousands of people took to the streets in cities across this country, but more than 10,000 people were also temporarily detained. And i think the crackdown on protesters has served to make a lot of people worried about going out again. But we shall see whether people do come out. They wanted to get 500,000 people signing up. They say that, so far, theyve got 430,000 but theyve decided to call this rally as it is. And Alexei Navalny has posted that the prison authorities are threatening to put him in a straight Jacket And Forcefeed him if he doesnt start soon. Forcefeeding, which is, of course, illegal under russian law. We have a little bit of a satellite delay, but i have to get a question in to you. We had some two russian warships that made a move toward ukraine overnight. What more do we know about this . Well, that is a deployment of 15 ships that was moved from the Caspian Sea to the Black Sea fleet. So it was posted in the last couple of weeks. Weve known they have been moving these ships to the Black Sea. But it comes, of course, as part of very much ramped up Military Activity in crimea and along the ukrainian border. We saw a huge camp that was being built up there. It was a Training Ground normally. And troops from west central russia had come sorry, what were you going to say . Go ahead. Sorry, diana. Anyway, there are more troops in crimea now and along the border with ukraine than at any time since 2014. And russia says that this is simply because of military exercises. They should be allowed to do exactly what they want on their soil, and it is because of natos threatening behavior on their western flank. But, of course, it has raised Alarm Bells in western capitals that this is possibly more than coercive diplomacy. That it may be a prelude to war. What is very significant for the kremlin is that President Biden has called President Putin and offered a meeting, even if he did follow that up two days later with further sanctions on russia. Because what russia really wants and perhaps this military buildup is part of that, is to be considered a top player. A force to be reckoned with. A country with a seat at the top table. And by giving him this weighting, that is what President Biden has offered essentially. All right. Diana magnay joining us from moscow. Sorry about that. I appreciate your time and that report. Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene is digging her heels in on that plan for a controversial America First Caucus. The plan outlines efforts aimed at preserving anglosaxon traditions. The conservative lawmaker called it a staff level proposal. She claims she hadnt read it but also released a lengthy statement calling the Media Liars and psychotic leftwing communists. Joining us to break down what is going on is Msnbc Reporter amanda golden. Good morning. Good morning. Yes, after previously confirming to Nbc News that her office was launching this America First Caucus in a previous statement given to us, theyre now walking that back from Marjorie Taylor Greenes office. We have a new statement that reads, this was an early Planning Proposal and nothing was agreed to or approved. This doesnt mean, however, anything was scrapped. It means as her earlier statement describes she plans on driving president trumps America First Agenda with her congressional colleagues and isnt going to let the media dictate her plans. This comes amid so much blowback from various republicans within congress of just hearing from leadership folks in Leadership Positions including kevin mccarthy, liz cheney, Ken Buck that say they do not agree with what these documents obtained by political news laid out as part of this America First Caucus. I want to read you some of that. It promoted a common respect for uniquely angosaxon political traditions and a nativist ideology that has a racist legacy behind it that said mass immigration posed a longterm threat a threat to the longterm existential future of america as a unique country with a unique culture and unique identity. Heres some of what Congressman Ruben Galledo said. Im not going to be teaming up with any of these racists, white supremacists. The good theyre putting this together because they want to highlight the superiority of the Anglosaxon Culture is absolutely ridiculous and in itself racist. We have the irishamerican caucus, hispanic caucus, we have the progressive caucus, the black caucus, but none of those caucuses purport to be one thing better than the other. So in addition to that, we also have now heard from Congressman Paul Gossar who was reported as being involved. He issued a statement completely denying any involvement saying he heard about this from News Media and did not write any of the documents that circulated. As far as republicans who said theyre involved or want to be involved, that includes congressman louis gohmert. He was looking at joining and confirmed this was coming from Marjorie Taylor Greene and this platform was happening. We saw a tweet from Congressman Matt Gaetz who is currently under federal investigation for alleged Sex Trafficking and Prostitution Charges that he tweeted support saying hed be proud to join this. Amanda golden, thanks for starting us off. Lets dive into this with former Dnc Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz of florida. Good to see you. Good to see you, too. You sponsored a resolution to remove representative greene from her Committee Assignments but shes still a successful fundraiser. She has a following. So some say things like this should be ignored, we shouldnt even talk about it. We have elected leaders pushing ideals associated with these hate movements. How do you feel the people you go to work with each day are pushing these ideals . Republicans arent even pretending that theyre not the party of white nationalists anymore. You can see why. Marjorie Taylor Greene proves every single day why it was absolutely essential that we remove her from her committees. Shes a menace. She was removed because, in part, it was very clear that she was going to be nothing more than a distraction. Now shes traveling she and other republican members are traveling down in much more dangerous and dark paths. Ignore. Thats what happened in nazi germany. The supposedly benign, more softer nazism at the beginning ultimately led to the holocaust. If you dont knock down the outrageous, racist, most really evil beliefs of republicans and anyone like this, then we will live to repeat the discrimination and persecution of minorities or people who are deemed other in the future. And thats what never again is all about, and im very careful about not making comparisons, but when you have to when you see this racism and the ownership of that only one race, only one people are acceptable, thats when you start to go down a very dark path. Congresswoman, just drinking in what you were saying, letting that soak in, but i want to switch gears. You are from florida. I want to ask about Congressman Matt Gaetz. Every week there seems to be a new development here in this. The Dojs Investigation into possible Sex Trafficking here. He denies any wrongdoing, but do you think its telling that theres really kind of been a lack of defense around gaetz in political circles, and is that representative of what youre hearing from your constituents and how theyre feeling about this . Oh, yeah. Well, as a state senator, i passed the first law that actually made human and Sex Trafficking a State Crime in florida. And so i spent my whole career fighting human and sexual trafficking. These are very disturbing allegations. Of course, like anyone, Matt Gaetz deserves to have his day in court, to, you know, really go through the system of justice and let the chips fall where they may, but if any of this is true, he most certainly should be stripped from committees. He should certainly step down if any of this is proven to be true. The republican conference rules say that, you know, that only happens in their under their rules when theres an indictment, but these are very serious, disturbing allegations, and they need to be thoroughly investigated as i can see that they will be. Congresswoman, you are a friend to this show, and we did see you just a few weeks ago. In the last month, the nation has witnessed 45 Mass Shootings. You sit on the Gun Violence Prevention Task Force. No stranger to fighting for this issue. Were all very aware of your history as such a close friend of gabby giffords. The house passed a bill on Background Checks. President biden announced some Executive Orders combating this. What is your optimism at this point of congress getting something done . Well, i am very optimistic. And just i think its important to keep in mind that, yes, thankfully we have a president who understands that knocking down and aggressively going after Gun Violence in this country is critical. But thanks to organizations like giffords and moms demand action, brady, there are also so many statelevel efforts. The nra is bankrupt. They have been very diminished as an organization and we need to just continue to keep pushing so that we can make sure that we can keep guns from people who are dangerous, who the law says shouldnt have them. We need to pass Jamies Law which would which is legislation ill be introducing that would enforce the law that already exists at the federal level. That you have to have Background Checks for ammunition. Thats absolutely essential as well. Were going to make progress. Slow and steady wins the race. We need to go faster. The violence that occurs in this country every single day, in our neighborhoods and through Mass Shootings is really has completely infected and left people in fear of just doing everyday things. And that has to change. I feel like every day theres a new incident, possibly even multiple incidents were having to tell our viewers about. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, thanks for being with us. Parents could soon be sent to jail for providing Genderaffirming Care for their kids. Its one of many laws popping up across the country. And a little girl is taking it on, headon. God made me. God loves me for who i am, and god does not make mistakes. That 10yearold and her mom will join us live to talk about it, next. There they are. Com promo were back with a controversial bill in texas getting national attention and also drawing a fight from a very young girl. So heres the bill. It says providing drugs and certain types of medical care to children under 18 is a form of Child Abuse and could be a felony offense. Parents and caretakers who violate the law could face anywhere from 2 to 10 years in prison. Thats not sitting well with one young transgender girl. She took it upon herself to testify before the state senate. Texas legislators have been attacking me since prek. I am in fourth grade now. When it comes to bills that to Target Trans Youth i immediately feel angry. Its been very scary and overwhelming. God made me. God loves me for who i am and god does not make mistakes. That was Ky Shapley who joins me along with her mom, kimberly, who also testified alongside her daughter. Good morning to both of you. Good morning. Good morning. Ky, you are quite the public speaker and it took a lot of guts to address this committee on this issue. We know youve been facing some pushback but you were recorded in one of the papers saying you wished the lawmakers asked you what it was like living as a Trans Kid in texas. So you have the floor. Well, its quite scary living in texas as a Trans Kid because theres so much bad stuff going on and you never know whats going to happen next. Kim, you also testified just last week about how this bill not only threatens kai but also your family and your career, specifically because your Nursing License could actually be revoked and your family might even have to leave the state. Do you feel like the lawmakers really heard you or understood what you were saying . Well, first of all, thank you for noticing that i testified because once kai was finished, i think i was an afterthought for everyone. So weve already had to move once. We had to leave our hometown because it was no longer Safe Due to the rhetoric around the bathroom bill. And we moved to the safest place in texas, which is austin. But these bills that theyre proposing now would leave us no safe place to be in texas anymore. And, yes, as a mom and a registered nurse and these bills being so broad and you have no idea how theyre going to use them, you know, as a mom i know the data, i know the information. As a nurse, i know the Science And I cant not do the right thing by my daughter and I Cant not do the right thing to my patients. Its putting me in a really horrible position. Just like most parents of Trans Kids in texas right now, were all looking at what were going to do. Like literally people in the united states are having to make Escape Plans to protect our families. And i just wish people understood that that is not what america is supposed to be. Wow, having to make Escape Plans for your family. Kim, on that note, there are bills piling up across the country here. At least 115 have been filed at this point. Im sure you have sat back and wondered why. Why is this a priority for state lawmakers. What have you come up with . I feel like there is a very strong base of radicalized christians. I am a christian, and they do not align with the teachings of jesus. But theyre radicalized. Were watching this happen. I can remember not even 20 years ago in this country we thought how are these other countries allowing their religious extremists to continue to grow unchecked, and now im wondering the same thing about my country because the radicalized right is dangerous. I mean im spending most of my time having to go through kais Social Media right now what is just really mean stuff that these adult people are saying and what is a real threat to her and her safety. Kai, do you have a quick message for other Trans Kids . Dont worry, everybody more people are with you than against you and, trust me, it will get better. Kai and kim, thank you so much for coming on our show. It was so good to talk to you. She mentioned after she wrapped up testifying, there were no questions. She asked the lawmakers, seriously, none of you want to know more about me . Shes gotten a lot of pushback because so many people have looked at her, saw how young she is and hear how young she is and just think way too young to be making decisions about your life. Young but passionate thats for sure. A scene straight out of a movie plays out on a florida beach. Oh whoa is right. New video of the Planes Water Landing just feet away from swimmers.
