Starting tonight, at 11 00 local time. Thats midnight, eastern. People are gathering there for the seventh night in a row. They are protesting the Police Killing of 20yearold Daunte Wright. Last sunday, formerofficer Kim Potter shot mr. Wright during a traffic stop. Officer potter resigned, on tuesday. The next day, she was arrested and charged with seconddegree manslaughter. Last nights protests were disrupted after one of the fences surrounding the Police Building was, momentarily, breached. 136 people were taken into police custody. We are also keeping an eye on chicago, where crowds have gathered for the last few evenings to demand justice for all victims of police violence. That includes for 13yearold, Adam Toledo. On thursday, the Police Department released Bodycam Video showing an Officer Shooting Toledo after a foot chase, last month. That footage, renewed the outrage over Police Conduct in chicago. Yesterday, thousands of people gathered in Logan Square park on the citys northwest side. They had planned to march to Mayor Lori lightfoots house, nearby, but Police Barricades kept them from getting too close. At least two people were arrested, near the protest, after a scuffle with police. Our reporters are standing by across the midwest tonight. Nbcs Cal Perry is in Brooklyn Center. And nbcs Antonia Hilton is in chicagos millennium park. Cal, let me start with you. How are the residents of Brooklyn Center Feeling Tonight . Look. Theyre nervous about tonight, and i will tell you what happened last night. You mentioned that fence and i am glad you did, josh. We are going to show you that fence right now. It is actually the second fencing that exists here, around a perimeter that they have put in place around this very small police station. The police, and we are talking about the sheriffs office, backed by the state police, backed by the National Guard, say that that fence was breached. The question amongst residents is, so, what does that matter . There is a goodten feet before you get to that other fence. And there were, as far as we could see, no weapons in the crowd. But nonetheless, the authorities came out, in force, at 10 00. They came hard. They came fast. And they arrested 136 people, as you said. Initially, they detained everybody, and then sorted out who was who. But this is the sixth night in a row this has happened. Even know things are absolutely fine during the day. The other issue you have here are the residents that live along this street. They are basically living under siege. Every night, you have this Back And Forth. We spoke to some folks yesterday. Take a listen. I dont feel safe. I dont. No, i dont. I really dont, i am being honest with you. I really dont. If that can happen, it can happen to me. It can happen to my son. No, i dont feel safe. I am just being honest. I really dont. I dont feel safe because they are over there and theyre doing what they doing. Because if they was doing the right thing, we all wouldnt be here. You wouldnt be here. I wouldnt be here. Wouldnt nobody be here. Now, these stories are linked just ten miles away, you have the trial for Derek Chauvin. We expect a verdict, obviously, possibly, this week. And so, the city is a militarized zone. Whether its where i am, or tenmiles away, the National Guard is everywhere. They are care requiring their weapons in a frontsling position. It is absolutely a tense situation. It will only get worse throughout the week. We just heard starting wednesday, schools in the Minneapolis Area will be shut again, as we stand by for that verdict. Joshua. Cal, what about the case of Officer Potter . The officer who shot Daunte Wright . Where does that stand . And what happens now . So, Officer Potter potter will make her firstofficial Court Appearance next month. She was arraigned and she was released on 100,000 bail, leaving a lot of people here wondering why that, as well, was possible. Shes only been charged with onemanslaughter charge. People here want a murder charge. They want that Word Murder in a charge. They are hoping that the Washington County Attorney will add a charge, sometime between now and next month. Joshua. Antonia, let me pick up on that with you with the shooting of Adam Toledo. The officer who shot him, officer eric stillman. What are we expecting there, in terms of possible charges . Well, joshua, its possible but its not clear right now that officer stillmans going to be facing charges. Although, of course, the thousands of people who were on the streets last night, many of them are pushing for exactly that. Look, there are two ongoing investigations. But through the civilian office for Police Accountability and another through the district attorneys office. When you talk to protestors, though, what you find out is that many of them do not have much faith in those processes. You know, recently, the Chicagopolice Union President came out and threw his weight, 100 , behind the officer involved in the shooting. And, look. People here feel betrayed. They feel betrayed by city officials, by the Police Department, and by a prosecutor who, prior to the release of the video of the shooting of this 13yearold boy, made It Sound as though it was going to be you are going to see Adam Toledo brandishing a gun, clearly holding a gun. Potentially, you no, menacing the officer at the time of the actual shooting and that is, of course, not what people saw. They saw Adam Toledo complying with orders and putting his hands up. Earlier today, Al Sharpton asked Mayor Lori lightfoot, you know, why is this officer still on the force . Take a listen to this. There is an independent investigation. It started the minute that those shots were fired. We have to respect that independentcivilian investigation. In addition to that, the states attorney, our district attorney, is also investigating this case. Its important that we provide space for those twosimultaneous, independent investigation to happen. The officers involved are, as a matter of course, put on desk duty. Theyre not on the street. And we got to let these investigations play themselves out. Joshua, tonight, chicago remains very calm. But there are protests expected throughout the day, tomorrow. A Peace March in honor of Adam Toledo and his family. But right now, what we are hearing from about visits is activists is many of them are actually urging people to be careful about showing images or sharing the video, Again And again. There is great concern here, In The City, that seeing images of Adam Toledos body is going to be traumatizing for young latino and black children here in chicago, who have been inundated by this imagery not just the past few months but the past several year, joshua. And that might be a good tip to pick up on with our next guest. But we appreciate both of you starting us off. Nbcs Cal Perry, in Brooklyn Center, minnesota. And nbcs Antonia Hilton, in chicago. Lets continue now with Jan Schakowsky of illinois. Her district is near chicagos Logan Square neighborhood. Congresswoman, good evening. Good evening, joshua. Thank you so much for having me. Well, you are one of the folks that we wanted to talk to, particularly, because of what antonia just described. The trauma that folks may be dealing with after this. What are you hearing from your constituents about everything thats been going on . I am sure that theyre talking about it. People are sad. A 7th Grader is dead. You know, i have to tell you, as a former teacher, my heart is just breaking for that. That, this childs life was cut short when he had, perhaps, a great future ahead of him. And we could have, all, helped him. But people are just furious, also. Just mad. When is this going to stop . You know, the the the death of of young men and young boys, now, a boy of color, is just unacceptable. And chicago has a history, actually, of police brutality. And we have got to do something about it. And frankly, i feel that this officer, who Made A, pretty much, a splitsecond decision. And we saw the weve seen the the video, now. That adam was compliant. That his hands did not, actually, have a a a gun in it. He was told the police officer, we heard from The Voice sounds that that swore at him to put the Effing Gun down. He did not have a gun. We saw that. And yet, he is dead. So, there there is just so much anger, right now, in In The City of chicago. And demands for something to happen. We want we want a change here. Well, with regards to what may happen, President Biden was asked about his agenda on Gun Violence. And on police violence. During his press conference, yesterday, with the Prime Minister of japan. Heres part of what the president said. Ive never not prioritized this. No one has worked harder to deal with the violence. It doesnt mean that I Cant also, be working, at the same time, on the economy, and on covid. But, its not a question of my being able to set the agenda in the senate, as to what they will move to, first. And so, i continue and i strongly, strongly urge my republican friends in the congress who even refuse to bring up the housepassed bill, to bring it up now. This has to end. Its a national embarrassment. Congresswoman, what is your sense of what can get done, now, on Gun Violence, in particular . I i i know i dont want to ask you to, you know, read Tea Leaves in the senate necessarily about the filibuster but what is your sense about where congress stands about doing anything about Gun Violence . What the president didnt mention are the things that he did with Executive Orders which i am very happy about. And i think one of the most promising things is to put money into intervention programs. That are done by the community, by people who are trained to actually go in, and step in, and top the stop the the the violence. This is an alternative than just having the police come, and often end with tragic endings, like we saw with with Adam Toledo. And and he is, also, doing things about getting rid of certain guns. So, there are Executive Orders. But, of course, it is time. It is waypast time for us to pass the legislation in the senate for universalbackground checks. You know, we have great laws in the state of illinois and the city of chicago that would prevent Gun Violence. That would reduce the number of guns. But, you can drive across the border, anywhich way from illinois, particularly to indiana. And on a weekend, when they have these outdoor shows yeah. Load up your car with guns and bring em across the border. So, this kind of trafficking has to stop. Do you have confidence in Chicagos Mayor and its police superintendent, in its elder men and women, to do something about this now . Or is chicago going to go through the same cycle that its always gone through, just with different members of the cast . I will tell you who i have confidence in. I have confidence in the people who are mobilizing and its not just the la Latino Community when it comes to to to adam. It is not just the black community, when we see africanamericans that are that are that are killed. Black, white, brown, people of every age, are coming together and saying, enough is enough. And that that is resonating, all over the country. We are sick of it. And i actually saw a startling statistic that black men, one out of A Thousand could be killed by police. You know, we we have to stop that. And this is the moment. And i think people are mobilized to make it happen. I hear you about having confidence in the community. Do you, also, have confidence in the leadership . Or are you putting confidence in the community, in lieu of confidence In The Citys elected and appointed leaders . No. But, as as an organizer, as well as a congressperson, what i believe is that people can make the changes, in the policy. Actually, whats a bit surprising to me is that, tuesday, some new policies were formed about how to disperse a crowd. And yet, what i heard last night, there was the use of batons. There were people who were thrown to the who ended up on the ground. And and so, we we have to demand that these policies that were changed are now enforced, as well. And we have to hold our elected officials accountable to make these changes. I think we have the power of the people to do that. Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky, democrat from illinois. Today, President Biden was asked about Alexei Navalnys situation. He responded, quote, totally, totally, inappropriate. Tensions between the u. S. And russia are escalating, on both sides. On thursday, the president announced sanctions, in retaliation for russiancyberattacks on u. S. Government agencies. Those sanctions were not a huge surprise. We figured there would be some kind of response. But we did get a surprise, that same day. The u. S. Revealed that Sensitivepolling And Campaign information from donald trumps 2016 campaign ended up going, from formercampaign manager paul manafort, to russian intelligence. Joining us now is ambassador Michael Mcfaul. He is the former u. S. Ambassador to russia and an Msnbc International Affairs analyst. Ambassador mcfaul, good to see you. Thanks for having me. Can we start with Alexei Navalny . For an american audience that looks at what we just aired from Brooklyn Center, chicago, sees what is going on in different parts of the country. Waiting for the Derek Chauvin trial and, yeah, thats really sad because i am waiting to find out what is happening to Derek Chauvin. Why should americans be paying attention to whether Alexei Navalny lives or dies . Well, americans should be able to walk and chew gum, at the same time. And care about injustice here, and injustice there. Actually, Martin Luther King used to say that from the birmingham prison, thats exactly what he said. And why it matters, i think, to americans, is that Alexei Navalny is, without question, the leadingdemocratic Opposition Figure to autocrat Vladimir Putin. He has been fighting for a morejust society. And Vladimir Putin and his government have tried to kill him. They tried to poison him. And he, luckily, survived by flying to germany. As a result of flying to germany, he allegedly violated his parole. And so, when he came back, they arrested him. And now, as you just rightly reported, has very serious Health Conditions that he is in. And i really fear that he could die in jail. And that, i think, would be a tragedy for anybody that cares about democracy and justice, whether you are an american or a russian. President biden announced sanctions on russia. He stressed that he chose not to impose the strongest sanctions, that he could have. He wanted to take take more of a stepwise approach. What do you make of his efforts, so far . And the strategy, so far . Well, i thought it was a smart strategy. He was responding to previousrussian behavior, during the trump administration. Everything they announced this week was in reaction to what happened in our elections. Solarwinds. That happened in the Trump Era and they promised a response. Candidate biden promised a response and you got a response. I thought it was right, also, to bundle it all together, in one big motion. And then, the russians responded just as we would predict, right . But both responses, i think, were commensurate. And as the president , himself, said when he announced it. The remarks that he Made A couple days ago. He was proportionate. And he, also, wants to have another chapter of possible engagement. So, you see a policy of containment when they do belligerent things. And engagement, when its in our interests. But that will, all, be undermined if something drastically happens to Alexei Navalny. And i think thats why those two stories are interlinked. Do you think putins going to let him die in prison . You know, i dont know. It happened to sergei. That led to sanctions against Human Rights Abuses and all around the world. I really think it would be a terrible tragedy, and it is not necessary. I dont know why Alexei Navalny needs to die. Vladimir putin is a strong, aw autocratic leader. Alexei navalny is a marginalpolitical figure. I think it would be if i were advising President Putin, i would say this is not in your national interest, mr. Putin. You will become a pariah if this happens. I really hope they think about that and do not let Alexei Navalny die. I wonder, in terms of strategy, before i have to let you go what it means for countries like russia, like china, now that the u. S. Is shifting its attention away from nonstate actors, like Al Qaeda and isis, although they are still on the radar. To morestate actors, china, russia. The country has said, in a very concerted way, you two are our biggest problem right now. We are dealing with Al Qaeda, isis, and their offchutes and adherence but right now, china are the issue. You are absolutely right. The united states, china, and russia. And that means that all leaders, including President Xi and President Putin need to manage those relationships because we cannot afford to go to war with china or russia. Thats a different qualitatively different conflict than with Al Qaeda or the taliban. And thats why we need wise, prudent policies to stable u. S. Russia relations. I would say the same for u. S. China relations now. But ball is in Vladimir Putins court. I think, bidens made the overture. He now needs to respond. Before i have to let you go. The president announced plans to pull out of afghanistan on september 11th. Do you think, that on current pace, the u. S. Walks out of afghanistan, for lack of a better word, having won the War In Afghanistan . No, we didnt win the War In Afghanistan. It was the right decision, but it was also a tragic decision. And i think a scary decision. Because after we leave, the taliban is not defeated. And i fear that they are going to try to come back to to kabul through the force of arms. There was not a negotiated settlement between the democraticelected government in kabul and the taliban, and i fear, that war will continue and escalate, especially after we leave. I would love to talk to you, another night, about that because i am superskeptical about whether or not that handoff between the taliban, the afghan government, the afghan people, other nations in the region, is actually going to go any way like we think its going to go. If something is static, and you change your mind about it, youre flip flopping. If something changes, the data change, and you change with the data. And rely on the data. Youre not flip flopping. On thursday, ohiorepublican congressman, jim jordan, confronted dr. Fauci during a hearing. When do americans get their first amendment liberties back. You know, i dont think anything was censured because they disagree with me. I think you are you are making this a personal thing and it isnt. Its not a personal thing. No, you are. That is exactly what youre doing. If the last year has taught us anything, its that changing minds means saving lives. So, how do we make this easier . What does it take to, not just learn but, unlearn . Joining us now, is adam grant, a professor of psychology at the university of pennsylvanias wharton school. His new book is called, think again, the power of knowing what you dont know. Professor grant, good evening. Welcome. Great to be here, joshua. Thank you. I am such a happy nerd i have wanted to talk to you about this book for more than a minute. You can tell that i have been paying close attention, and taking a lot of postit notes. And i want to begin with just this debate over vaccines. You are someone who studies organizational structures, organizational dynamics. How organizations deal with change. How are we, as a country, dealing with change, right now, as it relates to just handling this pandemic . Not well, i think. One of the big mistakes that were making is were expressing too much certainty and too much simplicity around a highly complex, highly uncertain issue. Right . Instead of just saying that vaccines are safe. What we ought to be doing is acknowledging all the question marks. We ought to be saying, look, we dont know the longterm risks of taking these vaccines. And so, some of your fears might be well founded. You know what else we dont know, though . We dont know the longterm risks getting covid. And based on the bestevidence available, it seems that getting covid is actually more dangerous for your longterm health and neurological function than the vaccines are. And so, it should be a discussion about relative risk or costbenefit, as opposed to this is safe, everybody should do it. But people dont like question marks, professor. People like to know, am i going to open my business . Can i send my kid to school . Is this vaccine going to kill me . They are they are scared over the pandemic. And they just kind of want to know. What does your research show, in terms of how the best organizations deal with that need for certainty and for security . Well, i think, one of the things you can do is you can make sure that, when experts speak, they express a little bit of doubt. There is evidence showing that, when experts say, you know what . Im not entirely sure. They become more persuasive. Because people are surprised. They listen, then, to the substance of the argument. And generally speaking, the substance of the argument is pretty compelling. So, i dont think we should be afraid to admit what we dont know. I dont think that means, saying we know nothing. We have no clue how to get out of this pandemic, right . I think, what we want to communicate is we believe that the vaccines, based on the available data, are the best shot we have to end this thing. One of the reasons i wanted to talk to you, after i read this book, is i thought there is so much in this book that is relevant to our politics today. And kind of frightening and embarrassing ways. When i read it, i was like, yeah oh oh oh, thats me. Thats me. For instance, on page 80 of your book, you wrote that kind of hit me in the face. You write absence of conflict is not harmony. Its apathy. What did you mean by that some. Well, credit to the Research Team led by Kathy Eisenhart who made that observation. If nobodys disagreeing, that means we are living in a world of group think. And my simple idea here is that not all disagreements necessarily mean somebody is wrong. Right . If we disagree, it might be there is a lot of missing information on both sides of the argument. And by having the conflict, we can start to figure out what we need to learn. So, it drives me crazy when people say, lets agree to disagree. How about, instead, when somebody says, lets agree to disagree, we realize, okay. Thats thats a sign that its time to stop arguing to win, and start asking questions to learn. Just to say, hey, wait a minute. It seems like this argument has completely fallen flat. I would love to understand where i went off the rails. And how i could have been more persuasive. Which means i have a better shot at at having a thoughtful conversation with you and, also, with other people on this issue. One of the things that i am just tired I Cant even describe how tired i am of hearing this. Is hearing people, regardless of their politics, say, oh, well they just dont want to listen. They are not going to have a goodfaith argument, anyway. They are too set in their ways. They are too far gone. I am tired of beating my brains against a Brick Wall trying to talk to these people. To hell with them. I am done talking. Theyre not going to listen, anyway. Is there a point in your research, that you find there are some people who are unpersuadable . Who are not worth talking to . Who are worth giving up on . Or is that a failure of creativity to deal with them . I think, there there are always going to be some people, who are resistant to changing their minds. But, whats Worth Remembering is its not the argument that they are resisting, right . Its the source. Its the person, who is trying to convince them that they dont trust, who they think has an ulterior motive. And so, one of the best ways to build that trust is to listen in a nonjudgmental way. I know, thats hard when you think somebody is morally wrong. But i dont know what the most pragmatic alternative is. If people do not feel heard, they generally dont want to listen. So one of the things that i found pretty helpful for gaging whether this is going to be a productive conversation for me is to say, okay. I understand that you have this set of views. What evidence would change your mind . And if they say nothing, i know, okay, i can lead a horse to water. But I Cant make it think. And this is a religion for them. Whereas, if they start to walk me through the kinds of facts or data that might make them open minded. I know we can start to to begin, at least, to get on the same page about what the conversation is is trying to solve. Even if we dont agree on all the facts. There is a quote in the book on page 104, that i find kind of characterizes whats wrong with part of our political debate. You write. A good debate is not a war. Its not even a tug of war, where you can drag your opponent to your side if you pull hard enough on the rope. Its more like a dance that hasnt been choreographed. Negotiated with a partner who has a different set of steps in mind. If you try too hard to lead, your partner will resist. If you can adapt your moves to hers, and get her to do the same, youre more likely to end up in rhythm. Professor, for those who are interested in dancing with people of different points of view. And giving up the satisfaction of stepping on their toes. What is Step One in getting in sync with people . With doing more dancing, than debating, than tugofwarring when we debate . Well, i think, Step One is actually making fewer arguments, right . I have ive thought for a long time that if i wanted to change somebodys mind, i should make seven or eight persuasive arguments and the data show that is exactly backward. And i am tempted to give you the seven or eight reasons why that is true. But let me take my own Advice And Focus on two. Its so easy to do. I mean, it is so tempting, right . Right. Im im almost unable to resist it right now. But the two that i think are really compelling, number one, more reasons feels like an onslaught. And that leads them to put their guard up. And, two, when you give more reasons, if people dont dont want to believe you, then they will just take the Leastconvincing Reason and throw out your whole case. Whereas, if you lead with your one or two strongest points, they are a lot more likely to want to dance with you. And i think the Starting Point is just to say, look, heres heres my view on this issue. I would love to understand yours, better. And then, you you arent actually losing the argument, right . The better you understand what other peoples hesitations are, the better you can begin to reason with them. We are going to continue this conversation with another guest, tomorrow night. In terms of the way that we talk to one another, and try to get other people to see our point of view. But i really appreciate you making time for me tonight. Like i said, i am a very happy nerd. The unscripted series on netflix will focus on his new life as an outgay man. Colton underwood is just the latest celebrity to make headlines for coming out. Most Gay Kids dont get mentored by our parents the way straight kids do. We kind of have to learn adulthood, on our own. So, colton, if you are watching, youre gay Uncle Joshua has two pieces of advice for you. That i wish someone had told me. First, you were known as the virgin bachelor. Fight shame, in all its forms, as hard as you can. I wish someone had told me to look out for it, from the start. Fight shame with a sense of selflove and gratitude. And dont put Up With People who shame you. Stand up for yourself. And be willing to walk away.
