Talk about what we know about the investigation and any information on motive here. Theyre Interviewing Employees and putting out calling for help right now. They may have information about what transpired. They would like them to reach out to the Police Department and share what they know. Right now we dont have a lot of information confirmed about the shooters identity, the shooters motives. What we know is that according to the police chief that spoke out and he was able to shoot and kill 8 employees there but he was not able to get deep in the facility thankfully. We expect them to learn more about what transpired last night. There are employees assuming they were familiar with them. None thoof is confirmed yet. Clint, we talk about it being an on going investigation. That was highlights. An eyewitness and the Deputy Police chief. Listen. My friends at the time witnessed a man who will also pulled out a gun from his truck to try to engage the shooter. And he died because of it. Do you know anything about that can you fill in the blapg theres . I wish i could. I dont know anything about that and when i heard mr. Millers statement, that was the first i heard of that. We want to show this is information information coming to the police. What are your thoughts about where we are . I imagine theyre mostly trying to diagnose the crime seen and see what evidence was there. It seems like employees didnt have their cell phones on. It will be evidence of what occurred in this location. It happened very late at night, and is sounds like it did did not endure very long. We talk about these closing of a mass chooting. And none of them really tied to extremism. A lot of workplaces, thats the only way you can kill five people is if you have an automatic and it makes many wonder. And it is a near by hotel and holiday in. He usually kaugs his wife just before 11 30. They said i dont know if he is injured or gone and were just scared right now. What we know right now is that there is an immention about of chaos. People, friends, Family Members. A former employee is waiting to find out if his friends are alive, save, and well. He has been trying to reach them, he has not heard back from people, and what he shared with us is that employees say there is a Cell Phone Policy on the floor of the warehouse where they process a lot of iphones where they cant have their iphones with them while actively working on the floor. This contributed to the chaos because people who would have texted or called had their phones locked away in lockers. Once they were locked down they could not get to their phones to confirm they were safe and well. So people are being interviewed by police that have not been able to get in touch with friends and loved ones and that is contributing to some of the confusion here, hallie. They will make sure there is no broader nexus. They want to make sure it was not tied to a larger plot. Next we will try to figure out moe five. Im sure theyre trying to wrest billion that right now. There is conflicting accounts but they will try to figure out what was the client, i think we may have just lost you unless it was my audio. We appreciate that as well antonio hilton. There has been a Broadcast Network about what may have contributed to this. We may get new answers about these questions stay with us for that. Wes want to turn to what is happening in the treats of chicago. Anger, protests, and pain. People are calling for justice. Police say a gun was found on the scene and that he threw it away just before the shot. There is other video from this area that does appear he released that gun from his hand and later there was a video of a gun near the area where he was shot. Police say that is of evidence for them of why the situation was so threatening and dangerous. But the family says that none of that matters, just listen. Adam, in his last second of life, did not have a gun in his hand. The officer the officer scramed show me your hands. He turned around, his hands were empty when he was shot in the chest. As far as where the investigation goes right now, it is on going. And according to the Chicago Police superintendents officer, he has been placed on administrative duties for 30 days. How do you see this as a whole . What were seeing is not a failure. This week was about 77 million people. That person is chris buckly who joined the kkk after leaving the army because of a crash and getting hooked on drugs. Hey, it was like how do you feel about being into the Security Aspect of this. You were training other members of the klan to fight . Yeah. A 2015 documentary shows him with his preschool aged son. White power i was grooming him. My son has always been a daddys boy. If he saw you giing the white power side. He threw a fit until we made him a robe that matched mine. I was completely okay with it. By 2016 his wife had enough and reached out for help. Within weeks another former White Supremacist showed up at his door for the first of many intervention sessions. It was agonizing, exhausting, emotional Roller Coaster that i have ever been on. And it was literally and figuratively forever. Pushing, pulling, and fighting. I could not get that close because at that opponent i was tackled. They stole my helmet, they tried to get my gas mask. It was all of these surreal things. It was like this cannot be happening. This cannot be happening. This cannot be happening. But it was. Have we identified these eight loved ones lost. Who are they . What are their stories, and more about the details of how it unfolded. It sounds like all of this unfolded in a matter of a couple minutes. One to two minutes. Did it begin in the parking lot . How did the person enter the facility . You know we heard that it is likely the shooter wasnt able to get too deep into the warehouse, but its unclear how they were able to access it in the first place. So you know, what were hoping to hear from the mayor and police chief in particular are more details about who the shooter is and why it happened and the stories of the people we have now lost, hallie. Thank you, i know you will stand by. Were going to bring you live coverage the second it begins. Were also watching what is happening in minneapolis as that city, people there, are starting to hear the closing arguments for the trial of derek chauvin. The National Guard planning in to bring more troops. That is after a fifth consecutive night of protests in the city after the shooting of daunte wright. The former officer says she accidentally used her weapon instead of her taser. There will never be justice for us. The justice would bring our son home to us, knocking on the door with his big smile, coming in the house. Justice isnt even a word to me. I do want accountability, 100 accountability. Now were going back to indianapolis where the News Conference is beginning as speak. Visited by a scourge of gun violence that has killed far too many in our community and in our country. Although we will learn more about this case in the coming days, and in the coming weeks, no peace of investigation will restore the lives that were taken or the peace that was shattered. Nothing we learn can heal the wounds of those who escaped with their lives, but who will now bare the scars and endure the memories of this horrific crime. What but are left with this morning is grief. Grief for the Family Members that were killed. Grief for the people who lost their coworkers, and grief for the Many Americans struggling to understand how tragedies like this continue to occur. Again and again. They join the Indianapolis Community in trying to understand this senseless violence. And it seems to me that beyond the need of comfort for the grieving, we must guard against resignation or even despair. The assumption that this is simply how it must be and that we might as well get used to it. We need the courage that compels courageous acts that push past wearyness. I want to thank the First Responders that arrived at the scene. The Iems Personnel that proinine brave officers investigating the events of last night. By all accounts these women and men acted courageously and brought order to chaos. Indianapolis is a resilient community. Last night was a devastating blow and the impact will be felt by our community for the days and weeks to come. But in times of despair, i know that our residents will rally together and help one another make it through. The eyes of the nation are in indianapolis today in way thats we would never have hoped for. And for those that only know of this city, what they are learned when were hosting major events on a global stage, they would be forgiven. And they are those that come to visit. What is difficult for those who live here to see in these moments is that this spirit of generosity and radical love is shared not just by our residents but between our residents. It is what makes this a special place that were proud to call home. In times of triumph and in times of tragedy. It is what gives us the strength to see through the darkness. And find the light of love that exists within each of us. It appears we lost the audio feed lets see if question get it started. Ill turn it over now to the chief of the indianapolis Police Department. It was a senseless crime that will not soon leave our memory. Our officers went towards danger as they typically do. They saw something that no one should really see. We have all been shaken. I will tell you one thing that drew me to indianapolis when i first came here in 93 is for such a big city to have such a smalltown feel at heart. Our Ipd Chaplains have been on the scene providing care and effort to the families of of the victims. My heart is broken over the loss. Fed ex is a major employer in this city. If you ask around there are numerous people, myself included, that work for this great company. And they have built bonds. I can only imagine what the victims, the sir vying victims and coworkers are going through. Were truly with them. The crime scene remains active. Public Safety Partners will continue to work at the scene for as long as it takes to ensure a thorough investigation. You will soon hear from brett mchart. I can share a few things with you, though. The First Responders did an incredible job. You will hear stories about their bravery as this develops. I know it will take time for us to learn more, i dont on nestle know that we will know all of the ins and outs to why this occurred but we will certainly do our best. But i know our Community Stands together. That was evidence through services renders in companies here like indigo, holiday in, and also our other federal partners by our side. Now i will introduce paul king. Thank you, chief. As was said, im the Special Agent in charge of the fbi indianapolis field office. First and fore most, i offer my sincere condolences. We mourn the devastating loss of their lives and were dedicating to honoring their memory through a meticulous investigation. Were part of the community and we stand with friends and neighbors to condemn this act. They are addressing the immediate needs, the personnel are providing expertise provided by the impd were grateful for our strong partnerships. Next up i would like to introduce the police chief. Good morning, first i would like to reiterate some of what has been said. I recognize this horrible tragedy that our community experienced this morning and certainly our condolences go out to the victims, their families, friends, and loved ones, and our thoughts and prayers are certainly with all of those affected by this violence. We know that is far reaching. And they going to bear with me, there may be a lot of questions that im ready to answer. This investigation is still in its infancy. I will as good as i can after were done. So we got a call of shots fired at the facility. When the officers arrived they found a very chaotic crime scene. Several victims were injuries and deseated. The suspect who was deceased as well from a gunshot wound. We started into views with many witnesses that were on the scene. We started to process that crime scene and were still several hours from being able to complete that at this time. They responded to the scene with the witnesses and the victim families. And indigo was at the scene to help us transport employees, witnesses, and families to the Family Reunification Site that was a near by hotel and we continue to work with those employees and families as we work through information and speaking with those families. Before i open anything up for questions, i want to recognize the work being done out there i our detech ticks i also want to thank the state police. Our fall partners that have been with us will work through the schism. Our Crime Lab Techs have been there all night as well. Ly try to answer whatever questions i can. I know you cant give much information at this point without motive, but what can you tell us about the suspect . You know, i can really tell you very little. And the reason is were still working to identify everybody that is still on scene there. So we are not able to make positive identification of the suspect so there is not much that we can say about him until we make positive identifications. Were any of the eyewitnesss, did they say anything about the suspect . What we found preliminarily from the interviews conducted is the suspect came to the facility. When we came there he got out of his car and pretty quickly started some random shooting outside of the facility. There was no confrontation with anyone there. There was no disturbance or argument. He just appeared to randomly start shooting. That started in the parking lot and he went into the facility for a brief period of time before he took u his own life. What connection was the shooter have to any of the employees. We dont know that. Its difficult to determine until we make positive identification. So were certainly working with the fedex organization to try to establish all of those. Youre saying you dont have a firm identification of the suspect. And the fbi said they researching his house. We have an idea. We had leads that lead us to that location, but until we make positive identification along with the Coroners Office were not going to anybody. Theres a search going on of somebodys house . Theres all kinds of things going on with the investigation. Thats one of them. A search of the individual you think who is the shooter in this case . Potentially, yes. How many weapons recovered . How many shots fired . I cant tell you that yet. The crime lab is still out there collecting all that evidence. We cant determine those things until they have completed did your witnesses tell you that perhaps at fedex or the Security Personnel or offduty Law Enforcement personnel at the site yesterday had any indication that perhaps this trouble was going to occur or somebody was going to come back with a gun . No. You know, were still working with fedex security for anything that might have been an indicator that this was going to happen. Right now, we dont have those ties. Again, its very early. Still in the infancy. Were still doing interviews, working closely with fedex to find those things out. Was the shooting done when Police Arrived . My understanding is that everything by the time that officers entered that the situation was over. The suspect took his life very shortly before officers actually entered the facility. How long do you think the incident lasted . You know, its hard to say exactly. The estimates that we have heard are just a couple minutes. It did not last very long. You cant confirm that the suspect is an employee . No, we cannot confirm that yet. How many people were in the building at the time . You know what . I cant tell you that. That would be a question that someone from the fedex organization would have to answer. I dont know the number. I dont know that number right now. How many were transported to the hospital . What we have right now is that there were five that were transported from the scene. Four of those had suffered what appeared to be nonfatal gunshot wounds. There was another injury of some sort that was a person with some sort of injury that was transported as well. Several employees have said that fedex policy is that employees cant bring cellphones into the facility. They fear it delayed getting you there. Was there delay . No. I think that we were contacted very quickly once things started happening. What i have heard is that part of the frustration in Family Notification has been due to a lot of the employees did not have cellphones. As they flee the building and to get transported to other places, they are without their cellphones. They had a hard time getting to family. That was frustrating for those employees as well as their families. Is there video of the incident . We are checking for surveillance video. Certainly, one would think in a large facility like that that at some point theres going to be some video were able to obtain. Did any witnesses indicate that they thought there was another employee who attempted to retrieve a firearm and attempt to stop this incident from occurring . I heard that kind of anecdotally. I have not heard that was reported to Law Enforcement to this point. We were doing lots of interviews still. Im not going to say thats not accurate. But i have not heard it from people within my own organization. Was there a shift change going on, which is why there would have been folks in the parking lot. Im trying to understand why that time of night. We havent determined that. I know there are places where i think a lot of the employees take breaks and lunches and things like that out in that area as well. It could have been a shift change as well. I dont have that answer right now. The facility is massive. You said its going to take a couple of hours. Can you give us an inside look as to what are you doing in that building . What are you collecting . Sir, how many people have you interviewed or do you plan on interviewing as part of the investigation . First, its not just inside the building where we continue to work and process the crime scene, because as i indicated, it started outside the building. Crime Lab Personnel have a painstaking process, organized process of documenting all the evidence there on the scene. That will start with diagrams and pictures and videos and then the actual physical collection of any evidence thats on the scene. That has to be done theres a big area. Like i said, we started outside and then we went into the facility. All thats going to take a while. [ inaudible ] in response to the question, i would point to the fact that just last week i signed onto a letter from over 150 mayors around the country asking for the United States senate to consider legislation that would expand Background Checks to be required when firearms are transferred between private citizens and to close the charleston loophole, which allows federally licensed Firearm Dealers to transfer guns to customers before an adequate Background Check is completed. The fact that i with 150 other mayors in asking the federal legislature to do that, at least indicates what i would like to see done legislatively. My concern about the indiana General Assembly is, i believe they only have three or four days left in this particular session. I certainly will make it clear to our governor and to the legislative leadership where i stand on these issues. Mr. Mayor, did the white house contact you . Could you share with us, what was that conversation like . Has the white house promised any resources to indianapolis . As most people know, the Chief Of Staff to the president of the United States is a High School Grad from indianapolis, indiana. It was not unusual that he would reach out to me. Basically, the offer was anything you need, mayor, we stand ready to assist. It was not a direct communication. It was text messaging. I, of course, responded, thanking him and told him we would keep him made aware of the progress of the investigation and if the white house was able to do anything to support, im certainly not hesitant to ask for it. Mr. Mayor, cities are always looking for cities from the federal government. There are things you could ask the white house, what resources could the men and women of metro police and other agencies and under your purview, what would you ask them at this moment in time . We are always deeply appreciative of federal support, whether that come by way of dollars or otherwise. Frankly, the City Of Indianapolis is grateful, for example, the c. A. R. E. S. Act provided 168 million. Many of those dollars went to our First Responders last year. According to the American Rescue plan, i believe indianapolis may very well be receiving over the course of the next two years 425 million. I have no doubt, although we have not made any decisions about how to utilize that money, i have no doubt that that money will also be used for Law Enforcement and First Responder support. Any time washington makes the offer, we are very grateful. Certainly, inclined to accept. How does a Community Heal from this . This is the third time they are waking up this year alone to a Mass Shooting. Yeah, i think that the Community Needs to engage in serious conversations and not just our community, but i think conversations need to be held around our country. Those conversations should be driven by the extraordinary proliferation of guns and cycles of violence that in 147 instances already this year have plagued communities around our country. Unfortunately, for the City Of Indianapolis, this is the third mass killing that we have experienced. The process of healing will take time. But i think healing does depend on meaningful conversations between people about how we stop this cycle of violence thats driven by readily accessible guns. I certainly intend to lead in that regard. We have been told that the suspect was allegedly shot and killed himself. What weapon was found with him . Is that the only weapon you believe was used in the shooting . We know that there was we believe there was a rifle involved. We dont have the specifics on the weapon yet. Again, we are still processing that. All that hasnt been collected yet. We do believe right now that he had a rifle. Could you talk about the process for identifying
