Shot vaccine. Can i just tell you about it for a second. I went on my own and didnt have anyone take a picture of me when i was getting the shot. I didnt. I dont think i would have liked to have seen a picture of me getting the actual shot anyway because i am afraid a needles and it would make me throw up if i saw a picture of myself getting an injection. But i took the photo of myself. I know it is a terrible photo. I am wearing my old battered west point baseball cap and forgot i put a bright red binder clip on the left side of the bill for safe keeping. I am such a dork. And this will be like forever in my vaccine photo. I look a little crazy in the photo, beyond just the weird hat. It is because i was sitting there balling my eyes out from relief and from gratitude from being able to get the shot. I kept having to sneak under my mask so i would not soak it while i sat there crying for half an hour. Sideeffects, i feel totally fine. My arm hurt a little after and i felt a little woozy. I know there were reports about a few people feeling bad after getting the Johnson Johnson shot. That may be. Im fine. My woozlyness might have been because i was so emotional about getting it done and because i am scared of needles. I am not going to go on about this forever. But i want to just say a thing about the vaccine. I feel like there is a discourse in the American Media and in the normal media. Not the conservative media which is mired in all sorts of disinformation and nonsense about covid, including about covid vaccines. About you in the rest of the media, left and in center and everything but hard right crazy media, i feel like there has been a lot of patronizing, snobby discussions about people that dont really want to get the vaccine. I will just tell you that i know a lot of people in my personal life and in my marching order. People that i love, respect and have a lot in common with that feel a little reluctant to get the vaccine. In addition to that, a lot of people in my life are super eager to get it and have been scrambling for an appointment and couldnt wait to get it. Along side that i know a lot of people will notice nobody will notice they have not gone. I want to say that is not anything to be ashamed of. Whatever you are reading or hearing in the media, that is not you know, you having ignorance or because you were drafted into a antivaccine movement, although there is one in this country. I am legitimately afraid of needles. I have passed out from having blood draws in the past. I hate it and i get that part of it. Incidentally i am generally a stay away from the doctor for everything person. I dont take any medication i dont have to. I had a specific worry about the vaccine. About four years ago i had a bad allergic reaction to a shot they got. It wasnt a vaccine. I had a back injury. I had a real scare with that. And even though that i got the fda fact sheets and checked the ingredients closely. I knew there was no overlap between any of the components of the injection to come i had the bad reaction. I know there is no overlap. Still, i am upon not going to lie. That made me worry. But look, actually on that point in this also terrible photo that i took. You can see that is my shirt. They put that on me. That means that i answered yes when they asked if i ever had an allergic reaction to a shot before. They put me through an additional medical screening and the other sticker on me indicating i would have to stay a full 30 instead of 15 minutes. So they kept an extra close eye on me for twice the usual time while i waited for the halfhour. Crying like i was reading the end of old yeller over and over. I have legitimate fears and did it anyway. If you are like me and you have been feeling oogy or resistant or dragging your feet about whether or not you are going to get the vaccine. I get it. You are not a jerk for feeling that way. A lot of us have reasons to feel reluctant or scared or hope it will all blow over and we wont have to personally get the shot ourselves. I am right there with you. I totally get it. Here is the thing that i have total clarity about now having done it. It is not for you. You are not doing this for yourself. If you are like me, your own health and risk is not a big rational driver of all of your actions. Maybe you feel fatalistic. If i get it, i get it. Maybe you feel like your odds are good you wont get a bad case if you do get it. Fair enough. If that is how you feel about your own covid risk and you are weighing the distant, not that concerning risk to yourself against all of the present ways that you feel bad and worried about the vaccine. You know, i get it. I understand the balance. You are not getting the vaccine for you. Even if you do not care if you, yourself will get covid. I know that you should care. A lot of us dont. Right. A lot of us are not wired that way. We are risk tolerant in terms of ourselves. Even if you do not care that strongly about whether or not you yourself will get covid. You feel fatalistic about it. What you do care about, what will move you and what does tip the scales decisively in favor of you and going to get the shot you dont want is this. It is that you really do not want to be the person that gets it and then will spread it to other people. God forbid if you do not get vaccinated because whatever is driving your reluctance, i get it. But god forbid if you do not get vaccinated and then you get covid and you unknowingly spread it to other people who you know or who you encounter and they get sick or die from it and they give it to their Family Members and their mom or dad dies from it because of you. Because you would not get vaccinated. God forbid. Can you live with yourself in that circumstance. If you decided no, i am scared. That decision cost someone other than you their life because they got it from you. It is not foryou. I mean if you are vaccinated your risk of getting sick or dying yourself drops to basically zero. That is true with all of the vaccines. But what is more important to me and you is that if you get vaccinated you saved yourself and more importantly you saved Everybody Else. You are like 90 less likely to get infected. Get your vaccine so you do not ever kill anybody with covid. It will protect you but it is so you dont kill other people and dont spread it to others. How could you live with yourself if you knew you had done that. Are you scared of getting the shot . Me too. Is your fear of the shot more scary than the prospect that you are going to be a vector spreading a fatal virus to people around you. Maybe you are playing it safe. No. 114 million americans has had a vaccine shot already. 114 million of us have had it. The number of people that died from getting the shot is zero. The number of people that died from getting covid in this country is now approaching 560,000. If you have been telling yourself this story you are playing it safe. You are not getting the vaccine. You are playing it safe. You are not getting the vaccine. Think about it. If there are two paths and the end of one path zero deaths. The end of the other paths more than a half million deaths. Which is the safer path . It is okay to feel reluctant and scared. That is nothing to be ashamed of. Feel the fear and do it anyways. It is not for you. It is to keep you from getting it and then spreading it. Seriously. If i can get it and cry like a baby. I do not recommend this angle for the selfie. But you can do it. If i can do it, you can do it. I will not talk of this again. We are going to be talking about whether they might start surging new vaccines like in michigan where they have a big spike in cases and now in hospitalizations. The fear is if you get more people vaccinated more quickly you could reduce the spread by reducing the number of people that can give it and give it to others. See how that works. The white house saying we will try to accelerate your ability to distribute it but are not necessarily sending you more vaccines and a live report from minnesota. Dramatic medical testimony that put to rest the contention that george floyd died because of any other cause than the policemens knee on his neck. This weekend in politics, the Republican Party is decamping to Donald Trumps house. They made a decision they would leave the site of the retreat and instead pay more than 100,000 of the Republican Partys money to former president donald trump. They will pay him to hold a gala dinner at his private Club Tomorrow night. He is like threatening to sue them if they dont stop using his name and their response is to pay him over 100,000 and go have dinner at his house. The person they are falling all over themselves to continue to associate themselves with. What is going on in his life . The Washington Post reports a Grandeury Subpoena has been executed for financial records related to the family of allen weisselberg. He was also the top Financial Officer for mr. Trumps father before that and investigators are honing in On Irrational compensation and attendant potential tax evasion which they appear to be tracing through weisselberg Family Financial records. I am not totally clear what it means but the Washington Post reports something strange seems to be happening around money and an ice rink in New York City operated by the Trump Organization. The Trump Organization appears to have paid a kings ransom to Allen Weisselbergs son whose job is managing the Ice Skating Rink for the Trump Organization. Not like an olympic facility. Cashonly business. Not a huge entity. It is a seasonal cash only ice rink in a park. But for some reason the manager of the ice rink, for that job appears to be paid 200,000 a year and a 40,000 cash bonus yearly and at least one or possibly two rentfree apartments including one on central park south, one of the most expensive addresses in manhattan and received a leased luxury suv at no cost to himself and private School Tuition for both kids, 50,000 a pop plus sleep away costs for kids and more all as compensation for him managing an ice rink in a park only open half the year and only takes cash. Like i said i am not exactly sure what it means but everybodys taxes in order and everybody declared all of your compensation . There are multiple reports from multiple News Organizations that the New York State prosecutors who are investigating the president and his business might be trying to flip the Trump Organizations top Financial Executive to testify about what he knows. He has hired a criminal defense lawyer. The new lawyer he hired is 84 years old. A Morer Law Partner as a special counsel. Maybe they think he knows how the Prosecutor Ticks and can unwind him now. And the other will have to divide his time. Congressman gaetz and former President Trump will both apparently be using marc mukasey. Mr. Gaetz hired mr. Mukasey and a second attorney most famous for representing high profile Sex Crime Defendants recently. Congressman gaetz lost a second senior staffer from his congressional office. Now his legislative director apparently quit. The Ethics Committee opened a investigation into congressman gaetz. The committee is aware of public allegations that matt gaetz might have engaged in sexual misconduct, drug use, misused state identification records, converted Campaign Funds to personal use, accepted a bribe or impermissible gifts in violation of rules and other conduct. Just a description of what they are looking into. That will be a bipartisan inquiry. The congressmans office said the allegations are all false. The circle of people involved in the scandal is becoming more clear and also seemingly precarious for them. A lot of focus on joel greenberg. The Investigation Into Continuing Man Gaetz involves the same under aged girl in the child sex trafficking charges. Mr. Greenberg was back in court on a third indictment federal prosecutors filed against him. There was an initial indictment and three more since adding additional felony charges. The latest one which he pled not guilty to today includes charges of embezzling 400,000 and bribing a federal official to try to commit fraud to steal covid relief funds. That is nice. But he is in negotiations with prosecutors to plead guilty to all of it or at least some part of it in exchange for a plea agreement. It would likely trade some favor for him cooperating. Because of the reported overlap between the charges against mr. Greenberg and the investigation into mr. Gaetz, that is not good news for mr. Gaetz. Joel greenberg appears not to be in a good place which might be important context we have newly released records from the Sheriffs Office in florida indicating when deputies went to greenbergs house to arrest him the deputies ended up in a fivehour stand off with him trying to arrest him. He tried to negotiate with deputies over the phone as they were outside his residence. Stating at times he would take pills, utilize firearms and had a bomb and was going to use it against the sheriffs deputies. I am just going to read this. Joel continued to negotiate via phone. Joel made suicidal comments saying he would take pills, utilize firearms and had improvised explosive devices and had hidden several items in his anal cavity. He threw a bag of medication on to the drive way before retreating back into the residence and closed the door. It should be noted during the negotiations and a long piece of the report that is redacted. But this does not sound good. According to the Sheriffs Office they say he is threatening he has a bomb and he appears to have thrown a bag full of pills on to his drive way while he is negotiating with the deputies. He has got a bomb. Other things. Eventually after five hours, the deputies were able to safely take mr. Greenberg in to custody and took him to a report for medical clearance and took him to jail. 12 years in prison if convicted. The judge has given him until the middle of may for any plea agreement. The New York Times is also now reporting the Gaetz Investigation expanded to include the congressmans discussions about a sham, fake candidate. Put up in an effort to divert the vote from the democratic candidate and help the republican. It should be noted that there were a number of these last year, the same types of scheme where a republican was running against a democrat and another candidate appeared on the ballot to apparently try to divert votes from the democrat. That same scheme recurred at least three different times in different Florida State senate races last year when the florida Republican Party was trying to hold on to the senate. In three races last year. Candidates appeared who nobody knew in politics. They didnt do any campaigning. But hundreds of thousands were spent on slick mailers that went out to voters promoting these noname candidates as strong, electable progressives and the Republican Senate candidate won with more or less help from the progressive vote split between the real democrat running and these progressives who are on the ballot. The candidate matt gaetz is discussed to have put on the ballot. What appears to be the sham candidate is an unemployed former Substitute Teacher from florida who did not campaign at all during the entire duration of the Florida State senate race in which she was a named candidate. She only had four donors to the campaign. Nevertheless, there were hundreds of thousands of flyers even though the woman happens to be a white woman. The democrat lost. Matt gaetz friend won. That young woman that randomly ended up on the ballot now picked up stakes and moved to sweden according to the orlando sentinal. One of the other races in florida where a sham candidate was paid to help the republican candidate win. The other case with the young lady who was reported as a black woman and now has gone to sweden. That has resulted in no charges that anybody knows of but now is part of the matt gaetz federal investigation as well. I should also tell you that the republican lobbyist in florida who congressman gaetz is alleged to have talked to about the sham candidate that fled to sweden. Today he was let go from his protrump republican lobbying firm. But hey, national Republican Party, lets all pile in to maralago to keep the trump train on track since it is turning out so well for everybody involved. Today was day ten of the trial of former Minneapolis Police officer charged with the murder of george floyd. Today the jury heard key testimony about how and why mr. Floyd died. The defense tried to argue it wasnt caused by Derek Chauvins knee pressing into George Floyds neck. They tried to argue that is not what ultimately killed george floyd. They suggested instead it might be George Floyds preexisting Heart Condition or something related to drug use that killed him in his interaction with Minneapolis Police officers. Well, today prosecutors took that head on and began with testimony from a Forensic Patholgist who described the cause of death in this instance in terms that could not have been more clear. Have you, dr. Thomas, formed an opinion about the mechanism of death . Yes. Would you tell us what that is . In this case, i believe the primary cause of death is asphyxia or low oxygen. There is no evidence to suggest that he would have died that night except for the interactions with law enforcement. Dr. Thomas testimony followed compelling testimony from another doctor who according to one reporter in the room had the jury on the edge of their seats with his thorough description of how mr. Floyd died. Mr. Floyd died from a low level of oxygen. This caused damage to his brain that we see and it also caused a p. E. A. Arrhythmia that caused his heart to stop. On the right image, you can see his knuckle against the tire. To most people this does not look terribly significant. But to this tells you he has used up his resources and is literally trying to breathe with his fingers and knuckles. The knee remains on the neck for another 3 minutes and 27 seconds. That testimony from the expert witnesses yesterday and this morning was all leading up to very highly anticipated testimony from the county Medical Examiner who performed the autopsy on george floyd. The reason why the testimony was so highly anticipated, when the Medical Examiner did his autopsy report he does not list asphyxia. He said mr. Floyds Heart Condition and drug use. The defense hinged their case on it and made a big deal on it. Suggesting it will be the crux of the case that officer chauvin is not the reason that george floyd died. Today the Medical Examiner was on the stand making it clear that he believes in his professional opinion that the reason that george floyd died that day is because of what officer Derek Chauvin did to him. In my opinion the Neck Compression was more than mr. Floyd could take by virtue of the Heart Conditions. The other conditions are things that played a role in the death but did not directly cause the death. Mr. Floyds Heart Disease did not cause the subdue or the neck restraint. So these are items that might have contributed but were not the direct cause. Correct. Testimony from expert witnesses and the Medical Examiner today in the Derek Chauvin trial. It feels like this is a big pivot in the case for the prosecution, that we have heard earlier in the case about mr. Floyd as a human being. We heard about the witnesses and the other people that saw what happened in terms of the confrontation. Now we are in to the medical facts of the end of his life. It feels sort of like the third act of this presentation. Does that seem right . Yeah. It seems to be that the prosecution is starting to wind down their case. You mentioned they went through and hitting all of the points they started off by mapping out during their Opening Statements which seemed like you said ten days ago. It feels like 100 days ago. They have been hitting those points. And today was, as you mentioned, one of the big moments where the Medical Examiner who you was the only doctor to examine george floyd when he died and had not seen the video before he came to his conclusions, which is important to note. Testified today and revealed the findings that we were just listening to. In terms of how this is going to resolve itself, it feels like this is maybe the last act of the prosecution laying out their case. In terms of the way that the prosecution has performed, any surprises that has arisen on crossexamination with any of the witnesses, is it clear to you what the defenses best cards will be to play when they finally take their side and present their side of it . It seems to me like the cards they have to play, eric nelson is still trying to poke holes as far as the states case, as to how much of a role that Derek Chauvin played in George Floyds death. Now, i am not a lawyer. I am not going to try to read you the legal instructions on the counts that he is facing on the Second Degree murder and manslaughter and third degree murder. But in laymans terms, they come down to the degree of cullibility that chauvin plays, maybe between a manslaughter or Second Degree murder depending how much jurors believe chauvin was involved in George Floyds death. How much did George Floyds compromised heart play in it. Yes, dr. Baker said it was the actions of the officers that precipitated him dying, but the jurors will have to decide how much of chauvins role is responsible. One last question as we head into this weekend and we start to look ahead towards what will happen next in the trial. How much is minneapolis paying attention to the trial . How closely is it being watched in the community . I am walking through minneapolis every day. There is a presence of people outside the courtroom. Not a large presence at times. Usually there is a number of people outside waving banners in support of george floyd. There have been mornings when i started at about 6 00 in the mornings. I remember walking by the courthouse before 6 00 a. M. And hearing people blasting loud music, loud club music and gearing up for a day of protests and demonstrations. People are paying close attention. Some people are getting involved. They are going out there. They are speaking out. They are taking to the streets. Because it is michigan and the midwest today, and tomorrow or next week it could be the northeast or the south or another part of the country. A Vaccination Surge Program. That is the Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer urging the white house for a Vaccination Surge Program. She wants an extra allocation basically of vaccines to her state. The governor said that she made the case directly to President Biden in a Phone Call Yesterday and the plea publicly today. Not the first time she started to iterate this issue. Michigan right now is the hottest hot spot in the country. Nationwide the country is leveling around 65,000 new cases a day. A very high plateau. But look at the shape of the graph in michigan. Michigans new cases per day right now. Look at that compared to the u. S. Yeah. That is a steep red line. Just in michigan. Approaching the worst that it ever has been. You can see how the number keeps rising. The incline is getting scener over time. They are now rising to a dangerous level. They started to creep up in february but now hospitals in detroit are nearing full capacity state wide in michigan. Hospitals are at 92 capacity. Michigan is in a bad place. With the vaccine roll out going great and ever increasing supply available to the American People it would seem like there is something we can do to help a state in crisis like michigan is. We have been reporting on this since last week since the governor asked the government for extra vaccine doses to her state to help fight the spike in cases. Vaccinated people, not only do they not get sick and die from covid, they dont get infected and spread the virus either. A place with Out Of Control spread could really benefit from everybody getting vaccinated very quickly. And her call with President Biden to make the request for more doses, for a second time last night. The president reportedly talked to Governor Whitmer about the federal governments plan to help michigan better administer the doses they had. The president told the governor that michigan will get more personnel to help administer the vaccines. But the coordinator of the White House Coronavirus task force after reiterated that part of the plan during todays covid briefing, he stressed there will not be a surge vaccine program. The white house will distribute vaccines based on population alone for now rather than surging extra to places with bigger problems and transmission. When it comes to the brass tax of how many doses delivered to michigan wound up in peoples arms. It looks like michigan is basically doing what Everybody Else is doing. They have given out 76 of the doses they have received. You would like it 100 . But 76 is the same figure nationwide and better than many other states. Michigan isnt having a crisis because they are doing a particularly bad job administering vaccines. It just seems like they have a ton of virus. Wouldnt a ton of extra vaccine help them. But michigan is hurting for a lot of reasons i am sure that we will get in to. The federal government can do a lot more. If you dont know how many vaccines you are getting, you cant schedule patients effectively. If the federal government were to surge our capacity then entities across the state that are administering vaccines could scale up. I talked to the Health Director in my area and she would love to scale up our capacity. We can quickly start immunizing people seven days a week but cant do that if we dont know how many vaccines are coming our way. It would help to get shots into arms as quickly as we can. Do you think that michigan is having a particular problem or sort of the same problem that everybody is having at the same level of vaccine up tick, of people having the option of taking the vaccine and not wanting to get it or get it now . Is that dynamic the same in michigan as you are hearing around the country or anything and going on in your state . What is happening in michigan as far as the rise in cases is a perfect storm. Vaccine uptake is one. We have more b117 strain here compared to every other state in the country except for florida and we have School Districts that are open in person, many across the state and while we dont think the kids will get in the classroom, they will get in after School Activities and sporting events. We have mixed messaging coming from political leaders. We have our democratic governor. We have republicans that lead the house and the senate. For the better part of the past year they have been downplaying this and parroting the trump talking points, telling people not to take it seriously. They showed up to the floor of the house and Senate Without Wearing Masks just to spite the governor. The single biggest predictor whether or not a person will get the vaccine is the political affiliation. 36 of all republicans say they are not going to get the vaccine ever, compared to 6 of democrats. I am seeing that every day in my clinic. We are vaccinating people in the clinic and the patients of mine who are conservative are more likely to refuse. We are spending extra time talking about how the vaccines work, why they are safe and how we need to reach the 80 number to get to herd immunity. Sometimes i am able to convince people. Sometimes it is hard as an individual physician to compete with the things they are hearing from elected officials they look up to or that News Networks they watch every day, they are hearing things that it is not as big of a deal as we are making it out to be.
