Every day. Question is, will congress help address what the president calls an international embarrassment . Plus, The End of week two of testimony in the trial of the formerpolice officer accused of killing george floyd. Today, we are expecting to hear from the doctor, who ruled Floyds Death a homicide. The question is what will he tell jurors . And talk about masters. Golfer, Tommy Fleetwood lives up to the Tournaments Name with a Hole In One. The question is who is on track to win that green jacket . Amazing. Its way too early for this, or is it . I dont think its ever too early for a Hole In One. Good morning. And welcome to way too early. The show that, also, always tries to nail it the first time. I am kasie hunt, on this friday, april 9th. We will start with the news, which is, unfortunately, difficult, again, this morning. We begin with a pair of shootings. First, in texas. One person is dead, and five others are hurt, after a gunman opened fire at a cabinet company, in bryan, texas. Authorities say the shooting took place about 2 30 p. M. , local time. And the suspect, who police describe as an employee of the company, was arrested and charged with murder. After shooting five people at the business, police say the Suspect Shot and State Trooper during a manhunt for his capture. Investigators are still looking for a possible motive. Two of the victims are said to be in critical condition. And in south carolina, about27 miles outside of charlotte, the York County Sheriffs Office says a Formernfl Player Shot and killed five people, wednesday afternoon. Including, two children. Before, then, killing himself. The suspected gunman was identified as 32yearold Phillip adams, and Officials Say he went into the rock hill, south carolina, home of prominent doctor, robert leslie, and shot and killed the 70yearold, along with his 69yearold wife, barbara. And two grandchildren, ada and noah. Another victim, 38yearold james lewis, who worked at the leslie home, was found shot to death outside. While, a sixth victim is being treated for serious injuries. Dr. Leslie and his wife had four children, and nine grandchildren. And were known to be active in their church. After an hourslong manhunt, the gunman, who Officials Say, lived on the same road as the victims, was found inside his home with a selfinflicted gunshot wound. Adams was drafted by the 49ers, in 2010, but was cut before the 2011 season because of an ankle injury. He, also, suffered at least two concussions while playing for the raiders in 2012. His father told reporters, quote, i think football messed him up. The nfl has expressed condolences to the victims families, and a motive has not, yet, been determined. And it was Gun Violence that topped the president s agenda, yesterday. Yesterday, he directed the Department Of Justice to reduce access to homemade or selfassembled guns that dont include serial numbers. And to cut down access to stabilizing braces which, effectively, turn pistols into morelethal rifles. He, also, called for a national Redflag Law to allow police or Family Members to petition a court to bar people, who present a danger to themselves or others, from accessing firearms. The president urged congress to take action, and said nothing he is proposing infringes on the Second Amendment. Gun violence, in this country, is an epidemic. Let me say it, again. Gun violence, in this country, is an epidemic. And its an international embarrassment. Every day, in this country, 316 people are shot. Every single day. 106 of them die, every day. Our flag was still flying, at half staff, for the victims of the horrific murder of eight primarilyasianamerican people in georgia. When tenmore lives were taken, in a Mass Murder in colorado. You probably didnt hear it, but between those two incidents, Lessthanone Week apart, there were morethan850 additional shootings. 850 that took the lives of more than 250 people, and left 500 500 injured. This is an epidemic, for god sake. And it has to stop. I know, its painful and frustrating that we havent made the progress that wed hope for. But it took five years to get Brady Bill passed. And it took evenmore years to work to pass the assaultweapons ban. And it saved lives. No matter how long it takes, were going to get these passed. Were not going to give up. Joining us now, white House Correspondent for Politico And Coauthor of the playbook, eugene daniels. He is also an msnbc contributor. Eugene, good morning. Its great to see you. Lets talk about these Executive Actions, here, and what we heard from president biden yesterday. These are not permanent solutions. Executive orders that go into effect from one president can, usually, be relativelyeasily reversed by anyfuture president. And congress has really shown they are, simply, incapable of doing anything on this issue. Where do we go from here . I mean, biden gave that speech. And then, we spent the rest of the day reporting on these twoadditional mass shootings. Yeah, exactly. And Thats Something that, when you talk to, you know, gunsafety advocates, they say they said the exactsame thing, you know, talking about how you know, how much how great it was for them to watch president biden talk about these measures. Despite the fact that they are temporary. Despite the fact that they want to see more of this, and they know that congress has to do the work. But then, you have these shootings, that you just laid out. And, you know, so hard to hear about the children. Things like that, that are a reminder that this issue and the gunsafety advocates. I dont know if theres a group, who talks to people on The Hill that have more of a whiplash in this. They get all of this attention. Gun mass shootings. Shootings, in general, get so much attention in this country. There is a flurry of activity on The Hill and the media. All over the country. And then, it just goes away. And they pointed to the nra, and their ability to lobby, so strongly on The Hill. And gunsafety advocates i have talked to over even the last year, have said that they have felt more and more emboldened and optimistic that, when this time comes again, which it seems like it has. That the attention is back on Gun Safety and regulation in this country. That the nra doesnt have as much power. Theyve filed for bankruptcy. I think, it was in january, earlier this year. And so, they feel like this is the time, if theres any, to possibly get something done. Its hard for me to see. I know, kasie, you have covered congress a long time. Its just hard to see, especially when you look at how republicans have put their have dug their feet in, so much, on kind of these Culture Issues and the Second Amendment is one of them. Yeah. So, eugene, i mean, The One The One thing that sticks out to me, and i am glad that you raised the nra. Because weve seen Wayne Lapierre in public, in that court case. Its actually a pretty remarkable situation. In some ways, the collapse of the nra has left a fartherrightwing group, gun owners of america, with more power. However, on the other side, democrats have organized much more aggressively and, i think, effectively, in the last ten years or so around this issue. And thats another thing that perhaps changes and the President Kind of alluded to this saying, okay. It took years to get this done but we got there. Do you think there is any reason to think that, perhaps, those Organizing Efforts could, if they dont pay off this year or the next year or the year after that, eventually, get to a point where we see real change . I think so. You know, we have seen all types of different activism groups get more creative. Kind of, get more savvy about the ways on The Hill, right . The nra was powerful, not just because of their money but because of the ways in which they worked on The Hill. And now, you have kind of that exact, same thing happening with gunsafety advocates. So i think thats true. I think there is we are kind of in a different time. You, obviously, have a different congress. You we have more evidence that this is a problem in this country. And now, you have a president who seems who clearly wants to do more. And so, the The Field is definitely a bit different than it has been. All right. Politicos eugene daniels, thanks very much for getting us started on this friday morning. Thank you very much. Meanwhile, an expert in Critical Care and the science of breathing testified, yesterday, in the derekchauvin trial. Jurors were riveted by the testimony of dr. Martin tobin. A specialist from the Heinz Va medical Center And Loyola medical school, as he explained the cause of death. Mr. Floyd died from a low level of oxygen. And this caused damage to his brain, that we see. And it, also, caused a p. E. A. Arrhythmia that caused to stop. Are going to be that he is turned prone, on the street, that he has the handcuffs in place, combined with the street. And then, that he has a knee on his neck. And then, that he has a knee on his back and on his side. The way they are pushing down on his handcuffs, combined with the street, his left side, and its particularly the left side we see that. Its like the left side is in a vice. Its, totally, being pushed in, squeezed in, from each side. He is totally dependent on getting air, into the right side. So, he is using his fingers and his knuckles, against the street, to try and crank up the right side of his chest. This is his only way to try and get air to get into the right lung. A healthy person, subject to what mr. Floyd was subjected to, would have died, as a result of what he was subjected to. Prosecutors, then, presented Nms Labs Forensic Toxicologist who analyzed george Floyds Blood and found both fentanyl and methamphetamines but he testified the levels of both drugs were lower than those in a sample of drivingundertheinfluence cases. He was followed by dr. Bill smock, from louisville. Though smock acknowledged on crossexamination, that he is not a pathologist. The prosecution continues its case, later, this morning. All right. Still ahead here. All the highlights from round one of the masters tournament. Plus, the french open gets delayed because of coronavirus. And later, what House Speaker Nancy pelosi is saying about getting president Bidens Infrastructure passed. We are going to have those stories, and a check on your weather, when we come right back. Has now reached the goal of fully vaccinating nearly20 of its entire population. This means, around 66 Million americans have been inoculated with the pfizer, moderna, or Johnson Johnson Vaccine. These figures from the cdc makes the u. S. The fourth most vaccinated country by population behind israel, chile, and bahrain. And states are going to see a significant drop in Johnson Johnson Vaccine deliveries, as the company plans to allocate fewer doses across the u. S. Next week according to data provided by the cdc. The distribution of the Singledose Shot has been inconsistent, week to week, since the rollout began at the beginning of march. This week, Johnson Johnson sent out 4. 9 million doses, nationwide. Next week, that number drops to 700,000. This comes, after federal officials learned that emergent bio solutions, a manufacturer thats been making Johnson Johnson and astrazeneca vaccines mixed up ingredients from the two. Ruining upto15million doses. That delayed authorization of the Plants Production lines but its difficult to determine how large a role the Factory Slowdown is contributing to the drop in vaccine distribution. And now, this. Voltaren. The joy of movement. Welcome back to way too early. Its 5 30 here on the east coast. 2 30 out west. I am kasie hunt. We are following new developments in the Justicedepartment Investigation into republican congressman Matt Gaetz. Nbc news has learned joel greenberg, a former Florida Tax Official and associate of gaetz is expected to plead guilty in the criminal case that spawned the Sextrafficking Investigation into the congressman. The New York times points out that this could be an indication that greenberg is likely to cooperate as a key witness, against gaetz. Investigators are said to be examining their involvement with women, who were recruited online for sex. And given cash payments. As well as, whether Congressman Gaetz had sex with a 17yearold. Gaetz, who has not been charged with any crime, has repeatedly denied wrongdoing. An attorney, who represents joel greenberg, spoke to reporters after a Status Hearing yesterday. Heres what he said, when he was asked about Matt Gaetz. Does Matt Gaetz have anything to worry about . Does Matt Gaetz that is such when it comes to what happened today in court. Does he have anything to worry about . Im sure Matt Gaetz is not feeling very comfortable, today. Well, then. Meanwhile, the New York times is reporting that a Secondsenior Aide to Congressman Gaetz has quit, amid the federal investigation. Three people, familiar with the decision, tell The Times that Devon Murphy resigned as gaetzs Legislative Director last friday. Meanwhile, the Congressmans Office has released a statement of support, reportedly, from femalestaff members. But no women were named, and nospecific person signed the statement. Its an odd one. A senior aide to gaetz tells Nbc News that there are eight women in the office who have all signed on to the letter. But that aide did not respond to requests to release the names of those staffers. Okay. Meanwhile, Congressman Adam Kinzinger is now the firstrepublican lawmaker calling on his colleague Matt Gaetz to step down. Kinzinger tweeted yesterday, quote, Matt Gaetz needs to resign. The cofounder of punch bowl news. John bresnehan. You have spent a lot of time in your career, covering breaking stories that have ultimately led to members of congress stepping down because of their own misconduct, sparking investigations, et cetera. What do you see here with what is going on with Matt Gaetz . Whats happened, in the past, if someone has faced an investigation like this . And at what point do republican leaders have to say, okay, this is enough, you got to go . The greenberg if he pleads guilty, thats a huge thats a huge moment, in this investigation. Because thats somebody, who could tie gaetz, directly, to illicit or illegal behavior, allegedly. This is for instance, this when the when the Justice Department when after bob menendez, senator bob menendez, over bribery allegations, they were never able to get someone who could tie menendez, directly, to the allegations. And menendez actually ended up being acquitted. In this case, when they get somebody that close. An associate, who is in the middle of all this. That is a bad, bad sign for Matt Gaetz. I mean, you know, as for the republican leadership. You know, theyre not in town, right now. But they are coming back on tuesday, and theyre going to be theyre going to raise a mediafire storm. People like you, me, and everybody else are going to be bugging kevin mccarthy, steve scalise, and everybody else in republican leadership about Matt Gaetz and the what are the allegations he had sex with a 17yearold woman . Yeah, that is a really a tough one. And that statement from President Trump about Matt Gaetz was also sort of one of the more interesting statements i have seen in my career. Basically, saying, well, he says he didnt do it. Thats all i got to say about it. Lets turn serious here for a second. Because we kicked off our show with twoadditional mass shootings here in the united states, that came the same day that president biden was announcing Executive Orders related to twoprevious mass shootings. One thing that stood out to us is this statement that Senator Toomey put out that seemed to open the door, suggest at least that he is willing to have a conversation about the backgroundcheck issue. He is, of course, retiring. He is not running for reelection. What was your take on the fact that he put this statement out there . And do you think there is going to be enough movement, on this issue, to actually get them to move forward on something . Or not . It was an interesting statement. I mean, toomey worked on a Backgroundcheck Bill in 2013 with senator joe manchin, democrat from west virginia. But it was on commercialgun sales. This would make sure there were Background Checks on allcommercial gun sales. And it was, ultimately, defeated. This came up after the sandy Hook Shooting. The terrible, terrible, sandy Hook Shooting in 2013. And there was a democraticrun senate, democratic president , and they cooperate get it through. So now, we are in the same situation. But its a 5050 senate but we have a democratic president who wants a backgroundchecks bill. So this does not go as far as the house wants to go. But it it is significant that toomey put this out, on the same day that biden was doing his white House Press Conference on on guns. You have seen a very strong pushback, from republicans and gunrights groups on what biden said. Especially, he made a comment on the Second Amendment. No amendment is absolute. And that has really set off the you know, the progun movement and republicans. You know, they are out there saying, you know, biden is coming to take your guns. This is the same argument they made in 2013, on Background Checks. So, you know, we are getting to this we are getting the same circle that we did in 2013. Im not sure there is even 50 votes in the senate for this legislation. And unless they get rid of the filibuster, its not gonna pass. Bres, what do you think the collapse what effect, has the basic collapse of the nra had on this issue and how its negotiated in congress . Theyre in Bankruptcy Court right now. Right. That is a fascinating question because they are and its exposing all sorts of machinations inside the nra. How they spent money on from the people who donated to the group. They spent money, like, you know, it was going out of style. Lets put it that way. You know, it right, you know, listen. It it doesnt there are there are other groups that have come up trying to fill the void of the nra. Theyre, even if possible, even more extreme than the nra. So, you know, and then, you know, you had i was listening to i was looking at some of the statements republican governors put out yesterday or the day before. When when bidens Executive Actions were clear. I mean, you know, iowa. Kim reynolds has signed a bill with, you know, a Righttocarry Bill that theyre not even going to, you know, require a Permit Or Background checks on some of these stateBackground Checks on some of these permit applications. Meaning, the states, some of these republican governors, are going in the exactopposite direction. So, i dont you know, the nra is not they dont need the nra as much as they usually did. Internet. They have Social Media. Gun rights groups can get together that way. So, you know, its going to be a its a tough, tough position that the country is in on guns. Yeah. I mean, in some ways, its become more radicalizing because of the nature of the rightwing media. But, of course, republicans, going to run into this. Senator toomey represents pennsylvania. Whether the whole package can be done then, we just dont know. But, as some have suggested, we want to do it before the august break. Now, our plan does have not only infrastructure, roads, mass transit, water, broadband, education, housing, it has a Number Definition of infrastructure, in a broader sense. But also, how how we do it. That was House Speaker Nancy pelosi, yesterday. Signaling she is looking to move quickly on infrastructure, aiming to have the bill passed, entirely, by august. Joining us now, msnbc political analyst, juanita toliver. Its great to see you, this morning. Lets talk about this Infrastructure Package because there do seem to be some bumps in the road. Namely, coming from senator joe manchin. And pelosi has the narrowest of margins In The House of representatives. Do you think the timeline that shes laid out there is realistic . Again, they want to do this, using a process that they do, actually, have to, ideally, finish up by september. Yeah. I think pelosis being explicitly aggressive hire, here, which is going to be welcomed by voters. Welcomed by people who are in explicit need of this type of support. I also appreciate Speaker Pelosi naming the expansion of definition of infrastructure here because, in many peoples minds, infrastructure is whatever makes it possible for people to function in our society and in our economy. That, of course, includes roads, bridges, housing, water. That, also, includes things, like, the care economy, which we know, this pandemic has really exacerbated a lot of peoples experiences with. So when pelosi speaks about this timeline, i think it also tracks with what we have seen from the White House when they say inaction is not an option. So, what i am looking for in this Next Week is not only what manchin is saying here, but also, what the gop is saying. And offering up the White House in terms of alternatives, because biden said he is open to listening. Hes open to compromising. And thats going to be something that really precipitates the timeline associated with this bill getting through congress. Yeah. You know, so speaking of republicans, im glad you brought that up because i think theres been a collective realization that the republican party didnt, exactly, figure out a way to convince americans that the Covidrelief Bill was a bad idea. Even though, they all voted against it. And now, you are you are seeing them try to oppose this infrastructure plan. By partly, by saying, well, whats in there isnt actually infrastructure. But its leading to some very strange things. I mean, marcia Blackburns Office put out a graphic that said, well, Elder Care is not infrastructure. Susan collins has tried to talk about it. I mean, these are, in fact, popular proposals. And the transportation secretary, pete buttigieg, was on Morning Joe the other day saying basically i dont care what you call it. The policies, themselves, are popular. Vote for them or dont. How do republicans argue against this if they, in fact, think its a bad idea in. They have shown that they cant. The ridiculous infographics we have seen coming from the gop on Social Media around Elder Care, around services we know their constituents want and we know americans want. They have also really emphasized the tax cut. And if their only rebuttal to this infrastructure plan, as we know from their 2017 action, and and cutting taxes for corporations and billionaires. That was a priority for the party. So, the rebuttal of elder rebut not infrastructure, and we dont want to raise taxes for corporations that already pay nothing, thats not going to cut it. I think the other thing that this signals is that the gop has not had a coordinated response to any of the substantive plans laid out by democrats, because they have no alternatives here. They have nothing to offer The American public and i think voters will see right through that. And thats why we see these ridiculous things coming from them, because theyre not coordinated, theyre not clear, and they dont have any Substantiative Response that is actually going to sway the opinion of The American public here. All right. Juanita toliver, thanks very much for being up early with us today. We appreciate your insights. And earlier on in the show, we ask All Of You, why are you awake . M. , the Cofounder And Ceo of axios, jim vandehei. Jim, always great to see you. Whats the axios one big thing today. Great to see you. We need to step back for a second and think about how much history were living in terms of we just went through Donald Trump who basically hijacked the republican party and realigned it. If you look at Joe Biden and the ambition of his Spending And Government reach in this first year is really redefining democratic party. Were living through the coronavirus, a pandemic. And now when you listen to people like goldman sachs, like Jamie Dimon at jpmorgan, people who are thinking about the global economy, almost all of them are now predicting an economic boom that we havent seen since 1946. The reason they believe its almost certain to happen and people are never always right on these things, but the reason they are all coming to the same conclusion is you have so much money being poured into the u. S. Economy, through the federal government. You have the fed Making Money cheaper than its ever been before. But then you also have both companies and then consumers who are sitting on literally trillions of dollars, they havent spent it, mainly because people were home and there was less business activity. This same dynamic is happening overseas and all of this money, assuming the pandemic gets cured through the vaccine or slowed in a way that people anticipate, they think all its going to be unleashed and youll see insane growth, here and overseas, and that tends to play off of each other. So when you hear of this talk of the potential of the Roaring 20s again, a lot of smart people think thats whats about to happen. Its really interesting. I guess the Flip Side of that, the Roaring 20s obviously led to eventually a great depression. And theres been some conversation about the rise in prices and the problem that presents. Are you basically saying that the ceos are not concerned about that at the moment . I dont think theyre concerned about it at the moment. I think everyone is concerned about it longterm. Because never if our history have we had governments push this much liquidity into the markets. Have we had this much basically free money in terms of if you want to borrow money for companies or a lot of individuals. At some point, you have to pay the piper. But in the shortterm, if you look at Jamie Dimons letter that he wrote to shareholders this week, he talks about, because theres so much spending with, at least through 2023, youre going to see really, really strong growth. What happens after that, none of us know. The optimistic take would be that theres so much spending and so much innovation in areas like climate tech that youre able to sort of grow your way out of sort of traditional economic patterns. But the big, Big Worry is just inflation. When you pump this much money into the system and you have Supply Chain issues that are just natural, but that also can be exacerbated, like by what we saw with the ship getting stuck in the canal, you could have massive inflation. But with this muffin being poured in, its hard to see as people get let out of captivity and start doing things again, there not be massive economic growth in the shortterm. For sure. Lets stick with this theme of company ceos, jim. Because weve obviously been focused a lot on political and social activism from companies. Mitch mcconnell going out there and saying, i think corporations should stay out of politics and trying to clean that up. What does this mean . What does that continue to look like . It seems like theres not really an alternative, except for them to get potentially more involved. I think this is another historic sea change. For the longest time, ceos stayed out of politics, stayed out of activism. They hated it, because they dont want to offend customers or employees. And now almost every single day, you have ceos being pulled into debates about Voting Rights in atlanta or what should we do on this issue or that issue. You had Jamie Dimon in that same letter talking about how ceos are now essential Policy Makers that you have to take stands on these big issues. Thats going to change the very nature of being a ceo. Thats my day job, im the ceo of axios. And what an employee expects of you today is so different than three years ago. They really want purpose. They want to know what you stand for as a company. They want to know what the company is doing Above And Beyond profit. Its one of the reasons a Business Roundtable last year put up that document last year that said, no longer can companies just be about driving shareholder value. They have to be about something bigger than that. It could be a big change, because you have companies that have a lot of money and Deep Roots in a lot of communities that can do really big things, but it also puts ceos in a real jam when theyre essentially there to try to drive value and create product, to suddenly have to spend a lot of their time figuring out whether or not you take a position on a big political topic. Yeah, and it makes the divided nature of our politics particularly risky for many of them. Jim vandehei, thank you, as always. Really appreciate your insights this morning. And as we head into the weekend, i want to wish a very important person in my life, my mother, a happy birthday. She happens to share her birthday with The One and only joe scarborough.
