Respective cases offering competing interpretations of the events for that day. Opening, Jerry Blackwell argued that Chauvin Detrayed his badge using Excessive Force. And he said that he kept his knee on his neck for longer than we knew, for 9 minutes and 29 seconds. You will learn what happened in the 9 minutes and 29 seconds. What happened in nine minutes and 29 seconds, when mr. Derek chauvin was applying the Excessive Force to the body of george floyd. You can see that he does not let up and he does not get up, even when mr. Floyd does not have a pulse. Were going to prove to you that mr. Chauvins conduct was a substantial cause of floyds death. Floyd said he couldnt breathe 27 times. And an officer at the scene had checked floyds pulse after floyd h been pinned to the ground for 6 1 2 minutes. Hes unresponsive right now. Bro, hes not responsive. Is he breathing right now . Check his pulse. Check his pulse. Check his pulse. And floyd had no pulse, chauvin continued to pin his lifeless body to the ground for another three minds, and he did not let up even as paramedics arrived with a stretcher. Bystanders at the scene reacting with concern for floyds life. People argued the bystanders themselves bear responsibility for what happened . There are people behind them. There are people across the street. There are cars stopping. People yelling. There is a growing crowd, and what officers perceive to be a threat. Theyre screaming at him. Causing the officers to divert their attention from the care of mr. Floyd to the threat that was growing in front of them. As many legal observes had predicted, the cause of death was subject of debate. The lawyer arguing it wasnt suffocation at all . The evidence will show that mr. Floyd died of cardan arrhythmia, from the ingestion of methamphetamine, and adrenaline through his body. Was no evidence that his air flow was restricted. The jury heard from three witnesses, including a 911 dispatcher who watched it unfold on Traffic Cameras she was monitors. She said they were pinned so long, she thought the video had frozen. Paul, i want to start with you. Lets start with blaming the crowd. That is a very innovative defense, i would say, on the part of chauvins defense. Especially saying that you know, they want to get to the perceived threat. That is part of the magic words that normally get Police Officers off on charges of murder of killing someone. He said that the crowd was a threat. What do you make . We knew he was going to put george floyd on trial. But we didnt know the defense was going to put the people, the bystanders, who did what they can to stop george floyd from being killed, we didnt know the defense was going to put them on trial as well. What hes trying to do is paint a picture of a chaotic situation in which the officers didnt have any good choices. It doesnt explain the final two devastating minutes in that video when chauvin is told theres no pulse but he still keeps his knee on mr. Floyds tech. You cant use the crowd and you cant blame mr. Floyd for what that officer did. On that point, if you can zero in a little more. I talk to a Law Enforcement friend last evening who said its very hard to convict olice officers of crimes like this. Its very rare. Even when its on camera. And eric garner, there was never a prosecution. In this case, what the Law Enforcement friend said to me, the key in the prosecution is the point the officers are told there is no pulse. At that point, the officer had been warned this guys got no pulse. You are pinning a body to the ground that cannot be a threat to you, and the warning can be the only thread that can produce a conviction. Do you agree with that . I dont think its the only thread. I think its helpful to the prosecution they can were going to hold on just one second, glen. Your audio is giving us issues. We will try to fix glens audio. Same question to you. Is that the thread that they need to hang a hat on to get a prosecution . Prosecutors the two minutes after mr. Floyd had no pulse, the officers still continued to muse that force. Thats not going to fly with the jury, and what the defense is doing, joy, is to make it look like george floyd was the perpetrator here. So in the first five minutes of their opening statement, we learn that mr. Floyd was on drugs, he tried to use a counterfeit 20 bill. And someone said there was a big man drunk and three Police Officers could not overcome him. They are doing that to claim that the force used against florida is reasonable. And chauvin did what he is trined to do, and Neck Restrantds were legal at the time. But the dpfs is trying to make mr. Floyd less sympathetic to the jury, and they are summing up stereo types about black men high on drugs, and having group strength. That is a successful strategy in the case of the Police Officers who beat up rodney king. We have though see if it works in 2021. If they are going to say hes a brute force guy, they are going to say he was near death. You cant be both, a brute, and also dying any way. Right . Because they are trying to say he was already dying and nothing chauvin did could have stopped him here is Jerry Blackwell. First blame the crowd, then blame the drugs. Here is Jerry Blackwell rebutting that. He did not die of a drug overdose. He did not die from an opioid overdose. We know he does not look like someone who would die from an opioid overdose. We know there are two autopsy here. We know you cant argue both things simultaneously, if he was practically dead, he did not be a live and active threat. But what do you make of the results as to whether or not drugs were the real cause . The official medical report says essentially that mr. Floyd died of a heart attack. But the because of death was homicide, meaning that there was a human actor involved other than the manner. And the family medical report says the cause of death was asphyxiation. And the official medical report rebuts that. If you say, gee, someones knee is on his neck, and he would die of asphyxiation. All the defense has to do is poke holes in the prosecution case to create reasonable doubt. They dont have to come up with an actual reason as to why mr. Floyd died. Its especially throwing mud, hoping something sticks. Here is why i dont think its going to work. If the jury buys what the defense is saying, they would have to think that its a remarkable coincident that he died of a heart attack after officer chauvin had his knee on his neck for nine minutes. Again, he is the most threatening nonresponsive person ever without a threat. I dont know how you make all those arguments at one time. Paul butler, thank you so much for being here. Joining me now is George Floyds sfr, bridget floyd. Great to talk to you. Your brother, he called the case a slam dunk today. This is his take. I want to let you hear that. We know that this case, to us, is a slam dunk because we know the video is the proof. Thats all you need. The guy was leaning on my brothers name for 8 minutes and 46 seconds. A guy who was sworn in to protect my brother, in modern day daylight, it was a lynching. At least Second Degree murder. It clearly showed he cleared my brother. Third degree murder, and accidental death, not intended to. Do you feel the same way, there is going to be a case in which theres a conviction . Absolutely agree with my brother. This was intentional. Weve all seen it. We will we will get justice. That officer will be charged. And i say that with mighty, mighty power because theres a god that sits high but he definitely looks low, and the world will never forget. Never forget what that officer did to my brother. Bus he was not trained to do such things as he did. And apologies for mispronouncing your brothers name. You know the record. I think of eric garner. And that was a nice seemed incredibly obvious. What happened to mr. Grner is clear. Its on tapes. He said similarly, i cant breathe. Its eerily similar. If it turns out that its not drn that the outcome here is not a conviction, then what . What will you think about the american criminal Justice System at that point . I want to think like that. I dont want to speak like that. Because i know were going to get justice. And were going to get justy for all families who did not get justice. Were standing tall with them. Were praying for them as theyre praying for us. Because my brother was the chosen one. It took me a long time to accept that. But god chose him to change this world. And he would not let us down without giving us justice. Because he took Something Special from us. That officer took something so special, and when god takes things from you, he replaces them. He replaces it. So i know were going to get justice. Without a shadow of a doubt. My Final Question to you, has the Police Department in any way you know, spoken with the family . Has there been been apology, anything from the Police Department to say they are sorry it has happened to your brother. Have you heard anything like that from the Police Department . No, no, maam, i have heard nothing. And its okay. Its okay they dont reach out to us. Because there will be laws placed where officers are not going to be able to do the things that they want to do. Theyre going to have to abide by the rules. They will have to be 4e8d accountable for their actions. Its okay. They know what the officer did and they know it was wrong. Maybe they dont know how to approach us. But its okay. Because were going to get what were striving for. And thats justice. Bridget floyd, thank you so much. Our condolences from everyone here at the show. Thank you for taking time. No problem, thank you. Up next on the reid out, im going to show you kpablgtly exactly what is in this is important before the Voting Rights legislation, and why are republicans so afraid of it. And dr. Hr1 is the biggest power grab in the country. Any time a republican does something, youre a racist. If youre a white conservative, youre a racist. If you are a black, you are an uncle tom. They use a racist card and were tired of it. Hr1 is sick, fwhoot they are doing in georgia. If you get a welfare payment, if you get an unemployment payment. If you get a drivers license, if you go to a public university. Its a dangerous bill. Its rotten to the core. Its a bill as if Written In Hell by the devil himself. The devil himself. Except, what they are calling evil, most people call convenience. It takes the voting of you, the voter, and putting the onus on your state. And agencies like the dmv, and public universities, places where you are already providing information. It requires states provide same day registration, to make signing up easier for you. And since work is busy, it would require states to allow two weeks of early voting and no excuse mailing voting. And it prohibits states from requiring i. D. When you have a vote. You dont have to make a trip to the copy place, and not everybody has a copy machine in their home. All these things are remarkably noncontroversial. And making it illegal to give food and water to folks waiting in line to vote. Today, another lawsuit was filed in response to that gop Voter Suppression law, and it alleges, officials have resorted to suppress the vote from black voters, in order to maintain the hold that the Republican Party has on georgia. Meanwhile, a georgia based corporation in the wake of the law continue to grow. And including a boycott of atlantabased Delta Airlines that put out statements prizing the bill, and others corporations like cocacola, ups and home depot. Michael, i have to go to you first. This is comical to hear, this is Written In Hell, and lindsay graham, whining. Its whining and its weird. If the concern is election security, putting governmental agencies and only tips that are already tabling the data about this people, and it seems to me the easiest way to ensure that people voting are legitimate voters. The dmv knows who you are. The Goal Governments know who you are. They are making it sound like its a weird space alien monstrosity. I wonder, as a republican, doesnt it make it clear they dont want people to vote because think they they will lose . Yes. Yeah, you summed it up. Look, the legislation in georgia that was signed in to law, what you see in arizona, what is bubbling around in other states right now, a significant number of states, is all about the inability of the firefighter win elections. So this is born out of that fact. I have been an advocate since the 1990s. My view, in a county where i was outnumbers, joy, the 800,000 residents, 58,000 at that time were registered republican voters. Just to let you know what the landscape is like, the black republican, since lindsay wanted to call me out. It was virtually about how we access the ballot box and creating the narrative to get voters to support your agenda. When you cant do that, you gain the system. Right. When you can no longer win a with a direct approach, you just played a montage of republican officials who dont have a platform. They have nothing to sell to the american they cant sell it to the constituents in their own state. We know this is all about Voter Suppression. This is a fear of black voters. This is targeted to states like georgia, like michigan. Where black voters turned out in numbers. If you cant beat the numbers, you tumpb it out. You cant bring wausht to someone standing in line for eight hours to vote. Its republicans passed 9 Voter Expansion Bills in georgia to make it easier to vote absentee. Saying you dont have to be sick or out of town. They pass those things to make it more convenient to vote. They pass all of the laws that dps then used to win those elections. So piece were their rules, and until democrats used their rules i worked in olympics, you worked in elections, they are kings of absentee. That is how they keep winning. And that was their thing. They were like, wait a minute, you used ours to win . Get out of here. And by the way, let me just mention to Lindsey Graham, its not just being a black person. Michael steel gets to come to the cook out. Lindsay, you cant come to the cook out. That is because of you. Thats not its because of you, lindsay, youre not inviolated. Lets go to you, juanita. Joy, i think he can come. He can maybe bring the potato solid. The reality is, joy, republicans wanted those accessible parts for voting. As soon adds black and brown voters turned out en masse to flip georgia, now they are pulling all the way back, and look, be very afraid. Fear me. Fear voters who look like me. Because the moment you give the Access Points that hr1 offers, once you get it through, the communities that need the most help. The communities that are most impacted by the legislation will show up at the polls. Im looking at hr1 Like Congress has a massive opportunity to shore up democracy when republicans are working to dismantle it, brick by brick, state by state and in an opportunity to step up and make sure that democracy functions. Theres a reason i went through and said whats in the be. Bill. They are trying to do 9 same thing they did with the stimulus. And not tell you whats in the bill. When people think about i dont have to go to a copy machine, and put the i. D. In the mail, i can just go ahead and vote and its easier, and have an automatic registration, its like a coupon in reverse. Its easier. Utah votes all by mail. They managed to elect republicans. You ran in democraticleading maryland. There is a republican governor that ran there. Colorado does it, washington state. Let me read Delta Airlines statement on the law. This is the problem we have. Here is deltas statement. It expands weekend voting, and protecting voting to basically, they are just lying about the law and they dont want to get boycotted. Cocacola had a similar statement. We believe voting is a foundational right in america, blah, blah, blah, this isnt going to help them, right in the these kinds of statements are going to put the cross hairs back on them . It does. It does. Because those statements are nowhere near reflective of the onerous nature of the law theyre talking about, the law theyre referring to. Actively disenfranchises voters, specifically black voters. So you have to speak to that. You cannot come with a soft pedaled warm, fuzzy oh, we love voting. You have to take a stand here. You said something that is very, very important, and i think its a series point. For republicans to understand exactly what this and im speaking specifically to republicans. How do you think we won in 2010 . What do you think it did as National Chairman in 2010 . A little of our voters are actually seniors who wouldnt get to polls. So we utilize the vote by mail system. Michael, my heart breaking first election, you know how republicans beat us in florida. We knew we had George W Bush on the canvas. We couldnt see them. They were voting absentee. We are way out of time, quickly. Im told to stop. Juanita, are you with bernese king and others saying dont boycott the state, boycott the companies . Think boycott the companies. This is an opportunity for black and brown individuals to show their economic power here, especially in the face of companies that dont care about their Voting Rights. Stand up and use your economic ability. All right, i really have to go now. Thank you very much. President biden announced 90 of all adults over 16 will be eligible for the vaccine by april 19th. He said the u. S. Will double the pharmacies where people can get the shot. For the vast, vast majority of adults, you wont have to wait until may 1. You will be eligible or april 19th. The failure to take the virus seriously is what put us in this position in the first place. Look, as i do my part to accelerate the vaccine decision distribution, i need the American People do do their part adds well. More good news, the cdc is reporting the pfizer and moderna vaccines are proving effective in symptomatic and asymptomatic infections. The new cases increased 10 in the past week. And deaths are averaging 1,000 a day. And a visibly shaken dr. Rochelle walensky. Im going to pause here, im going to lose the script, and reflect on the sft horizon. We have so much to look fore ward to. And right now, its scary. I still badly want to be done. We are just almost there but not quite yet. So im asking you to just hold on a little longer. To get vaccinated when you can. So that all of those people that we love will still be here when the pandemic ends. Joining me now is the former obama policymaker. And i want to go back to the plea from there walensky. And dr. Birx, here is part of the interview this weekend. There were about 100,000 deaths that came from that original surge. All of the rest of them in any mind would have been mitigated or decreased substantially. You can go through here, and gerard, the former cdc director dr. Redfield, this is a lot too late, right . The retrospective . Yeah, that is absolutely right. And honestly, all they did is reputation management. We did not hear about any of the atrocities that we know are uncovered, unearthed and supported by a lot of the physicians. And we have been there, with we are are working for powerful people, and the truth is always an ultimate job. We had to get that out. Lets talk about what we are dealing with now. Florida, where the governor is like, bring back the cruise ships. Spring break, we saw the pictures of people partying with spring break. We have seeing infections in florida. We are seeing it all over the country. Are you as scared as dr. Walensky . I am. I will say, offers dr. Birxs comments, what if we had that level of doom, we would probably be in a better place. That you know, not zero deaths but nowhere near what we have today. So i think we still have to maintain vigilance. If you are vaccinated. You can see friends and family who are vaccinated, hugging them, and having a meal without masks. But do not go and gather in person in a tight setting. Avoid settings where you do not know who the people are, and for the love of everything, put a mask on. Because we dont know who is vaccinated. We dont understand who and what risks people have. We dont know who has a chronic disease. So no, i do have that sense. You dont have to tell me twice. I dont care, i will be hiding out still at my house, and by the way, donald trump issued a statement, written like a 6yearold wrote it. I will not read it, going after dr. Birx. I have a Working Theory we should be taken the Johnson Johnson vaccine and basically giving toitd every person who is between 18 and 30. Because they are taking the most rifks. They are partying, out there. Do you agree with me . Should we section the vaccines that way . Joy, when they said there is a one dose vaccine, i said shut go to the people who wont come back for a second shot. I have parents who dont follow up with a vaccine that takes multidoses. Im a huge proponent, instead of working in 1a, 2a, get it out to the very people who we know all yearlong have been spreading this virus, and that has been younger people who tend to not want to wear masks. And youre absolutely right. And get some of the right wing whoevers, pay them to go out and take it to the club and let the young people do it. Dr. Patel, thank you. And tonights absolute worst you have been waiting all this time. You dont want to miss it. To m. I always dreamed of having kids of my own. Now im ready for someone to call me mom. Okay, admit it, weve all been addicted to amazon during this entire pandemic. And amazons profits went up 84 last year, and ceo jeff bezoss personal wealth rose by about 70 billion off our obsessive purchasing. Bezos is so rich that as of last year, he makes more money per second than the typical worker makes per entire week. He makes a point to be philanthropic with amazon donating 10 million to organizations including the naacp and the National Urban league last summer. When it comes to the conditions of his own workers, many of them black, bezos hasnt been so charitable. Amazon has a history of being antiunion, and that behavior hasnt changed the most recent efforts by its workers to yunnianize. Today was the last day of voting to unionize for nearly 6,000 workers at an Omjean Warhouse in bessemer, alabama. It would be the First Successful union at any amazon facility, and it would spark a Movement Across the south. Alabama workers are fighting for the right to collectively bargain over working conditions including safety standards, training, breaks, pay, and benefits. Amazon has pointed out the Company Offers a 15 an hour starting wage, benefits, and a clean Working Environment for its employees. The National Labor Relations Board will begin tallying up the vote tomorrow, but it could take a few days to get the final results. Im joined now by Bishop William barber, hes called this fight to unionize our selma. And jennifer bates, a pro union worker at amazons Bessemer Warehouse who testified in front of the u. S. Senate Budget Committee on the working conditions at amazon earlier this month. I want to start with you, jennifer. There have been a lot of competing claims. There was a claim that paying workers 15 an hour doesnt make you a progressive workplace, said mark pak of wisconsin. Saying your union makes workers urinate in bottles. Amazon responded and said you dont believe that peeing in bottles thing was true. If it was true, they wouldnt work for us. Are workers being forced to pee in bottles rather than take Bathroom Breaks at amazon . I havent seen it at my amazon, havent seen it either. If its happening, im not sure. What are the conditions . So thats one thing. What are the conditions that in your mind make it that you would want to have a union rather than work as you are now . Well, most of the some of the issues are we have Safety Issues. Longer hours of work and less breaks that we have. No communication or support from leadership. And then, let me actually bring in bishop barber into this, because you have called this our selma. And i know that there is obviously a connection because dr. King was fighting to unionize sanitation workers, you know, at the time he died. Why do you think its so important . Amazon does pay 15 an hour minimum wage. With our economic selma, and before 68 in 65 at the end of the selma to montgomery march, dr. King connected the union fight and the fight for rights. The battle to suppress the vote and the Battle To Suppress Labor Rights has been a tactic used by Southern Whites aristocracy to hold on to their money. They have shown while amazon claims 15, that plant is great, their warehouses near there, they make 18 and 21 starting. 18, 21 hours. You have the amazon took the peoples 2 an hour hazard pay while jeff bezos made 180 billion plus. The workers have no contracts. Real workers can be fired for any cause. Over 20,000 amazon employees contracted covid. Yes, they gave 10 million of chump change to certain groups and civil rights organizations, and claiming that he supports black lives. Well, what about the 5,500 black lives in that plant . What about the white lives, the brown lives, the asian lives in that plant who have no contract, who had their 2 hazard pay taken, who are not making what their counterparts are making right near them. You know, hes been very good at camouflaging the real battle here. And we know in the south the battle for Voting Rights and the Battle For Union Rights is the same fight. Because what it does, joy, it brings together the coalition that the aristocracy and the ruling classes always feared. Black people, white people, brown people, asian, and native, poor and low wealth workers. When that coalition is organized in the south and votes together, it fundamentally changes. We saw it in 2008 with obama. We saw it in 2020 with georgia. Thats one of the fears about all of this spreading across the south and the country. And thats why in many ways bessemer is our i call them the bessemer 6,000, is our economic selma, because here we are again in alabama. Here we are right down the road from birmingham that dr. King fought in, in 65, and here we have all kinds of tactics. I tell you one other tactic thark rr using. They bring in people to teach about the union and they teach the wrong information. When the workers question that, the workers have to come before the class and have their pictures taken as a form of intimidation. So theres a lot of wrong going on here. Very quickly, jennifer, what would it change in your working life to have a union there . In your mind, what do you think would change if this was a unionized workplace . To unionize the amazon in bessemer, alabama, actually, what it would mean to me and a lot of my coworkers is that we would have job security. And that we will have a seat at the table to speak to amazon about the working conditions. Well be able to speak about some of the things that they need to take care of to allow us to work comfortably. Even with human resources, were not able to talk with them, or they ignore us, so it would give us a seat at the table to sit down and force amazon to talk with us about the Safety Issues that we continue to, you know, speak to them about, or just firing the young people without giving them information on the things that they should or should not be doing in the facility. We have people being rolled out in wheelchairs, heart attack, you know, its a lot thats going on in there that the people on the outside dont understand. Well, thank you for helping us to understand it this evening and being with us on this evening. Bishop william barber, jennifer bates, thank you. Thats tonights reidout. All in starts now.
