advocates are calling for a boycott of georgia-based corporations, coca-cola and delta air lines to speak out against the law. moments ago, georgia governor brian kemp spoke at a news conference, this one on the tornado coverage and he did not mention the new voting restrictions. in just a moment, a live report from georgia and also ahead at 12:30, my panel responds to one of the most provably false statements donald trump has ever made. then at 1:00 p.m. robert gibbs looks at president biden's news conference and why it's a victory for the white house against critics and more controversy surrounding the colorado shooting after what lauren bobert said about guns and shootings. first, we have reporters in place covering all of the angles for you from georgia to the white house. he's at atlanta city hall and you're not inside, you're outside, my friend, josh, but there's a lot going on in georgia and how are people reacting to the restrictions and to the state representative just as the bill was being signed into law? people who oppose this law, alex, are sending up flares to the rest of the nation. they say that republicans across the country are taking these same steps in steps like arizona, florida, texas, as well as iowa and warning that if they do not do something now the ability for americans to cast their votes nationwide could be seriously curtailed. you mentioned park cannon, the state representative to protefrt she is now out on bail and just a few hours in now we are expecting a rally outside city hall in atlanta in solidarity with representative cooper. we are also hearing from senator rafael warnock, one of the chief opponents of this law who is describing what he felt when he saw her getting arrested. take a look. >> first of all, you know, it's heartbreaking to watch that footage and i've seen it a few times now. i've known representative cannon for several years. i'm her pastor. she is a brilliant young woman, deeply committed to public service. she shouldn't have had to endure this kind of insult and injury for standing up for her constituents and their right to be heard in their own democracy. these are politicians who are trying to hold on to power. that's what this is. it's a power struggle and they've decided that they're going to hold on to power no matter what, even if it costs the democracy itself and the only people ultimately who can correct this are the people themselves. >> the fight goes now to the courts, alex, where there is a federal lawsuit against this new law as well as to corporate america where as you call out there's a growing call to boycott, coca-cola, home depot and delta who did not do enough to intervene to stop this law. in the meantime, we are also hearing from republicans both at the national level like former president trump as well as here in georgia, and the integrity of the elections and they are claiming that this expands voting access whereas before the covid-19 pandemic there were places that didn't have any, alex. >> okay, josh, thank you for all of that. >> let's go to monica alba at the white house. we have president biden who has been a vocal critic of the new voting law in georgia, but is there anything he can do at the federal level to challenge it? >> that's the critical question the white house is asking itself today and we know president biden is pushing his staff to try to find an answer to even before that law passed in georgia. in fact, just hours prior to that the president gave his most impassioned answer on the thursday press conference on the topic of voting rights. more generally, he called these efforts by some republicans what amounts to voter suppression in his words un-american, sick and the most pernicious thing. he made very clear where he stands on this issue even before now. georgia is the first example in the last day or so where he can point to where he feels there needs to be some action and that's what he wants to see from congress, but it won't be simple. bills that have passed the house are currently stalled in the senate, but take a listen to what the president said who spoke out on this several times today in exchanges with reporters before leaving for delaware. >> it's an atrocity. the idea -- if you want any indication that it has nothing to do with fairness and decency and they passed a law that you can't provide water for people standing in line while they're waiting to vote. you don't need anything else to know that this is nothing but punitive designed to keep people from voting. you can't provide water for people about to vote. give me a break. >> is there anything that the white house can do to protect voting rights in georgia? >> we are working on that right now. we don't know quite exactly when we can do at this points. the justice department is taking a look, as well. >> earlier this month, alex, the white house and the president did sign an executive order, more generally relating to voting rights expanding access and revamping vote.org with a couple of voting initiatives in it and that does not directly address what we've seen in georgia and remember, it's not just there, dozens of other states and hundreds of other bills are aiming to do similar voting restrictions. so that's why you have the president there saying there's something else that could be done, but this also opens this major debate about what might be adjusted in terms of the current filibuster and the arcane rule in washington because as it stands right now there are not enough votes to get rid of it in washington or across the nation. >> which is why the president says we'll have to see when we can do. monica alba, thank you so much. let's bring in michael eric dyson, distinguished professor of african-american studies and eye very good friend to us here. nice to see you again, michael. thank you for joining me. >> great to see you, as well. >> here we go with president biden saying this is jim crow in the 21st century. georgia's governor says quote, there is nothing jim crow requiring a photo or state-issued i.d. to vote by absentee ballot, but let's look at what he missed. he's not highlighting parts of the due that reduced the number of ballot drop boxes and locations, and outlaws water. to whom would you agree? >> clearly, president biden is absolutely right. brian kemp is an extension of a jim crow trajectory that began before the confederacy, but certainly rooted in it and extended post-reconstruction, the denial of black people's access to the ballot. black people in the south for the most part couldn't even vote until 1965 and then to extend these kind of draconian measures imposed upon black voters in particular without naming them, knowing that voter i.d. are requirements for absentee ballots and the souls to the polls when you can't go from church to vote directly. all of these things are under attack. we think about it, georgia is maybe the bellwether and the benchmark for what is happening in at least 23 other states with 250 bills being marshalled by republicans in control of many of these state senates who are looking to undermine the ability of black voters and others to vote and the extraordinary extension of the jim crow logic means black voters who are more susceptible to these rules will be directly targeted by them. >> okay. so all of what we just said, the lateral brings us to the protection with at least 42, eric. 42 more states working on restricting voting access and here's what congresswoman barbara lee. take a listen. >> of course, they're targeted to people of color and specifically african-americans and that is why we have to pass hr-1 which increases and makes sure that there's voter access and the john lewis voting rights act hr-4. that has to happen and we need to have federal protections because otherwise we'll go back to before the days of jim crow. >> we know that senate republicans are not onboard with this. do you think congress is going to hash this out? >> yeah. i mean, it has some possibility, of course, and the house of representatives. >> right. >> but the senate, as you well know is deeply and profoundly opposed and we know that the deployment of the filibuster and the necessity for a 60-vote majority to make a difference in the senate is not rooted in racial antagonism, but has been deployed in defense of opposition to african-american interests and others in this nation. so we know that it's going to be a hard road to hoe in the senate and it's a tragic revelation that when we talked about donald trump it was never simply about donald trump. it was about the ideals, the practices and the principles and the racial antagonisms that are solicitously and expressed and quite effective on either side. >> home depot, coca-cola, trying to pressure those corporations to join the fight, but is being met now with pushback from martin luther king jr.'s daughter bernice and please stop the boycott georgia talk. that would increase racism and classism. two sides to look at it. >> they both have a point. reverend bernice king, a valiant advocate for civil rights herself, makes it a point about who ultimately pays a price. but in the short term it may be necessary to sacrifice. her father said that we will have to sacrifice our blood, that is the people who are advocating for social change in order for real change to be brought about. if dr. king was willing to suggest the sacrifice of body, limb and blood for the long term gain of not only economic prosperity, but racial justice it may be true that it will be necessary to sacrifice in the short term the wages and the economic security that may redown to sacrifice their personal wage interest, economic interest and income redownding to them for the bigger picture of saying we have to stop this because if we allow this to go forward the harm and damage to black people in the long term will be far more substantial. i think a targeted, short-term boycott is extremely necessary. >> i have to tell you, it's a micro and macro look at all of this. hey, do stay with me because i want to talk to you about your meeting with president biden and other historians there and i want to ask you why it was so revealing and we'll see you in a bit. thank you. >> we are following the developments in the coronavirus pandemic. the u.s. surpassing 30 million cases with more than 550,000 deaths. the cdc director is warning of, quote, another avoidable surge in cases and it comes as more states are loosening restrictions and the limits on in-person dining and the cases are rising after several weeks of a plateau. 16 skates report up to 25% and you have more states seeing higher upticks and however, there's more good news to report on the vaccination effort. people 65 or older have received one dose and nearly 65% on that age bracket has brought more doses and this brings the total of vaccinated americans at just under 19%. an alarming new threat of the covid wave loomed as travel hits new heights during spring break. let's bring in corie coughman. chaos is one word when i use to describe what you saw there, but let me ask from a covid perspective, what do you see in terms of a rise in cases. anything notable? >> there is a concern that this will end up being one of the hot spots that people take their travel to these other states when they go back home and continue to spread this. we haven't seen the numbers just yet, alex, and there is a concern two to three weeks from now. there have been weeks of heightened crowds and the second weekend of the curfew enacted in miami beach. a national look here, more than half of the states in this country right now are seeing an increase in coronavirus cases. in fact, as you mentioned, there are a handful of them. more than 25% including connecticut, north dakota, west virginia, minnesota and others. the cdc director says on average the national rise in cases is about 7% and this is a clear indication that we are possibly on the brink of this fourth wave. listen to how she describes this precarious situation. >> i remain deeply concerned about this trajectory. we have moved from hospital admissions to move from stag nation increases and we know from prior surges that if they don't control things now there is a real -- for the epidemic to surge. please, take this moment very seriously. >> all right. walensky also says that the biggest challenger is to get people to hold on a little longer and continue to mask up, continue to social distance. obviously, as we reported last weekend and it is the case today. crowds in miami beach are not heeding that. we are seeing very few people masking up during the day and still a lot of crowds at night despite the second weekend of curfews and the good news is reduced violence here, but the crowds are still coming in. and florida is not just the only state that these crowds are coming into and there are a handful of other states with relaxed restrictions that the spring breakers are flocking to. that includes north dakota and connecticut and i point to those specifically because they're on the list of some of the highest rising cases right now. >> i am glad to say that after watching reports my daughter and their friends canceled their trip to miami beach. they just said it's not worth it. they were watching you. you influenced them. thank you very much, corie coffin. inside the white house, president biden's meeting with a group of historians and when it means for his pursuit of presidential greatness. what and robert gibbs. what did it accomplish? >> yes. it's accurate, but certainly not comprehensive as no report could possibly be. it was a remarkable few hours with the president of the united states of america. what was most exemplary and i think most gratifying to many of us gathered there was the utter humility that the president possesses, wanting to know more about the past. wanting to check his own perceptions against what particular historians bills of interests are and what their expertise is and how they matched up to what he believed and also his enormous curiosity about the world. so after each presentation the president would weigh in, in like a mini seminar back and forth engaging the particular scholar or historian or critic and asking questions, putting forth propositions. it was a display that was quite gratifying. >> can i also say your description, i'm going to add the adjective, it was refreshing. my goodness! can you tell me more what aspect of history the president was most interested in? >> well, he was curious about a lot of stuff. he was curious about reconstruction. he was curious about race and he was curious about the beginning of the nation and about democracy. he was especially committed to the proposition that we must galvanize all of the resources at hand to make certain that we defend democracy and raising the question, is democracy itself in crisis? and when you see that kind of bold, visionary approach to history, not the cranky utilitarianism that dictates my particular public policy must be related to this political outcome, his was a broad, sweeping generalization that looked across the horizon of history to say what are we doing? how are we getting it right? alex, you're not lying and it is extremely refreshing and b that the president is interested in that he reads and c, that he's willing to engage other people who are willing to think critically about this and that was all gratifying and refreshing. >> shouldn't that be required? i'll leave that for others to decide. let me ask about the sense you may have gotten about the legacy that president biden might be aiming for. do you think he'll try to model his presidency after any particular former president? >> well, you know, it's a pastiche and it's a grab bag from this from fdr and this from lincoln and lbj and this from obama and this from clinton. in that sense, what he is understanding is that any presidency is a hodgepodge of what came before and how you can make do with what you have now. it's improvisational and in that light, what his greatest desire is his legacy to be, his commitment to the truth, dedication to science and an observation of the facts and most especially an embrace of the american people to make sure that democracy serves them and that no political process subordinates democracy to its narrow partisan gain and in that sense, he would have made an extraordinary contribution to the presidency and certainly to american democracy more at large. >> tremendous. what about his immediate predecessor? did he come up at all and in what context? >> not really. the implicit backdrop is that we knew we were there in sharp contrast to the previous president who didn't understand the partis inels and necessary to the office and a kind of intellectual humidity. donald trump assumed he knew everything. and president biden assumes he knows nothing, and the bearings he possesses as a result of his heritage and his desire to make this nation better than it was. those are the landmarks and the benchmarks and really the north star of this particular presidency. >> how cool would it have been to be abe fly on the wall for that, but i thank you so much michael eric dyson for coming and talking and tells us about this. i'm jealous. just going to say it. very cool. >> thank you so much. >> thank you for having me. if you thought you'd heard the last of gop claims about january 6th. think again. it's coming from donald trump and once again, it's not true. what he said and reaction next. t (woman) off-road trip. >> he's right. there are 250 bills nationwide on the state level where republicans have been introducing laws to restrict the vote in every single way possible. i mean, no one thinks that not being able to give voters online for ten hours water should be illegal. there's nothing about that that would prevent voter fraud which didn't exist in the 2020 election was the most secure in history but republicans are very focused on suppressing the vote of the voters who are less likely to vote for them. they responded to losses in 2020 by going and introducing bills to make it harder for black and brown voters and aapi and indigenous voters who turned out in historic numbers to vote and rafael warnock, the senator from georgia is absolutely correct and also you should remember that this is american history, alex. this is not new. i think people have been comparing it to some new version or some new sanitized version of jim crow, but it is exactly the same as jim crow we've seen in the past. we saw an insurrection complete with violence. we also saw governor brian kemp stand in front of a painting of a plantation surrounded by white men to sign this voter suppression bill and the messages are not hidden. they are very clear and obvious to those who know american history. >> saying it is current-day jim relaw here, and i want to peck up on a point that you made about republicans saying this this legislation prevents voter fraud. to your point, there were no credible allegations of mass voter fraud in the entire 2020 election. so elise, to you, is it that republicans believe they can't win statewide lechs in georgia without laws like this? no. i mean, zerlina hit the nail on the head when she brought up that there are 250 similar type of bills circulating in republican legislators around the country. the republican party is embracing authoritarian measures to stop, to prevent voter turnout of voters who are quite simply not going vote for them and while this bill ranges the gamut of the petty which is 150 feet for anyone distributing food or water to anyone standing in line. i've never heard of a southern state that doesn't want people to eat, drink and have hospitality while they're in a line in georgia, but apparently georgia legislature, those republicans don't want that happening. what it does to the overall administration of the election and basically gives power to republicans and you look at georgia's secretary of state brad raffensperger who stood up to trump, he even is going to be removed from this board and it will be up for a vote which another republican will be chosen to fill the slide. so it really is very sweeping and blatant and they're really just not trying to hide what's going on here. >> kurt, do you think the issue of voting rights might that be the point where biden and democrats draw the line and eliminate the fill buster? >> well, it needs to be. nothing is more important than protecting our democracy. know? of the other issues that we debate and wrestle with matter if we do not protect the institution of democracy as we know it. what we are seeing is a systemic attempt by the republican party to completely dismantle the ability of people of color in this country to participate in our election. they know that they can't win if all of us show up. they know that going forward we are going to be a majority minority country in america and so they're trying to rig the game before it's even played. we're getting to a point now where a person of color who is an elected official in the state can get arrested for knocking on the door of the governor. that's the vision of the future that the republican party sees when it comes to community of color. they want to do everything they can to use the instruments of power that they currently have to cast off people of color, to hold them at the mercy of white law enforcement and to make sure that they cannot vote. it is absurd that we live in a time where a law can be passed by republicans, who by the way, used to spend all day whining about the overreach and where are those who are saying you can't get a bottle of water when you're in line to vote? the republican party has drawn a line in the sand and they've definitively said they are for white power in america and the choice now that we all have to make and the choice that i think that democrats in congress and the biden administration have to make is what are they going do to stop it? because republicans aren't playing by the rules. they don't care about tradition. they don't care about democratic norms. so what we do going forward and getting rid of the filibuster, that is an act of self-defense for democracy. >> listen, i want to switch gears here and play something and have all three of you react to it. it's donald trump who was on fox news this week where he was defending those who stormed the capitol on january 6th and then attempted to try to paint a much rosier picture of the riot that left five dead and several others injured so let's take a listen to this. >> it was a zero threat, right from the start. it was zero threat. look, they went in. they shouldn't have done it. some of them went in and they are hugging and kissing the police and the guards, you know? they had great relationships, a lot of the people were waived in and then they walked in and they walked out. >> so his interpretation is absurd and demonstrably false. what is he doing? is he trying to re-write history and if so for whom, we will go kurt, elise and zerlina as we answer this. >> it's the continuing whitewashing of what happened on january 6th and it's the same tone that was seen from ron johnson who very poignantly said that if the protesters were black he would have been worried, but since they were white he wasn't and that says all you need to know about how republicans and donald trump, ron johnson and all of their ilk view january 6th. >> is that what he does, repeat things over and over again until the point that people believe him? >> that statement leaves no doubt trump incited the riot, he encouraged the riot and he still encourages the riot. he is completely supportive of the effort to storm the capitol and to throw out the election results that did not certify him. it is absolutely insane that you have members of the capitol police who lost an eye from this crowd that donald trump is talking about as hugging them and you have people who died. you have a capitol police officer who died. it's preposterous and it's wrong and it needs to be nipped in the bud and that's why it's important for history that there be some kind of full-scale commission, looking into the truth of what happened on that dark day. >> you know, it's remarkable, zerlina, i thought this president, that former president loved to watch tv. apparently he didn't to mack a statement like that. >> well, i don't think he missed the insurrection on that day, alex. i think he was watching it and i'm thinking it's exactly what happened and it makes me think of this mantra that my therapist gave me. people can say whatever they want, but you don't have to listen. what is liberating in this moment is that president biden is the former president. we don't have to believe him. we don't have to engage in what he said. we can just flat-out look at what he said and look at the evidence and all of the video evidence and know he's lying and then we can move on because to kurt's point which is a through line. our democracy is under assault by the republican party who is going on with donald trump's big lie. the big lie that he really won the election somehow and it was massive voter fraud. we know that that's a lie so we don't have to engage in it. we can call it a lie and move on and put things in place to protect our democracy and the pandemic. we are still in the middle of a pandemic and tried to move our country forward towards a place where we don't have to worry about white supremacists, terrorism, whether you're going to the grocery store or a movie theater or the walmart. you can live your life as an american knowing that this country believes in we, the people, which means more than just white people. i wrote an entire book about this idea in that we are a changing country and our demming on demography is changing and hopefully we can stitch the pieces together and stay united as a multi-racial country because that's what we are. >> point well taken as well from you elise and kurt. see you soon. >> make sure to catch "zerlina" on the peacock streaming channel the choice. colorado investigators say something is haunting them about the mass shooting there. what is it? because we have two bills that passed out of the house of representatives, alex, and that's new. that did not happen after sandy hook. we have hr-8 and hr-1446 and those are pending in a different senate. mitch mcconnell held up those two same bills in a session of congress ultimately what this really boils down to, though, alex is bringing these bills to the floor and if old jim crow rules of the united states senate like the filibuster stand in the way for reforms like this that 90%+ of americans want then i think we need to end the filibuster and i see a lot more support for those kinds of activities than i ever have and that gives me hope. >> i'm very glad for that and right there with you, but when you make the point that 90% of americans feeling that way right now, are american, though, becoming somewhat desensitized to mass shootings. it was almost a side bar, oh, yeah, was there that other one in virginia. it's shocking. some people move on so quickly instead of keeping the pressure lawmakers for real reform. does that concern you? >> honestly, alex, i don't think the americans that i talk to every day are becoming desensitized to this. i'm a mom. i have two kids. like many other parent across this country, they're a little concerned when we open schools back up because then they have to worry about active shooter drills and whether kids will be harmed at school or whether they'll be at a concert and for far too many communities across this country especially communities of color, gun violence is an everyday experience. the average black male loses years of his life compared to caucasians, i think we are disheartened that still a handful of election officials put gun industry profits over average american lives and we have to continue to your point, to raise our voices to our elected officials to demand change and that includes the president. >> let me ask you real quickly. the fact that the nra went bankrupt, does that help you in any way? >> well, look, they went morally bankrupt a long time ago. certainly, if you look at how much the nra spent to elect, for example, president trump. they were one of his largest contributors. some of the money isn't fully known and it's somewhere between $30 and $70 million that they spent. they spent a lot less money in the last cycle and overall the gun violence prevention movement dwarfed those expenditures and that matter, but ultimately, it's just about average, everyday americans calling their senate, demanding that the changes happen that passed by the house and holding our elected officials accountable at every level, state, local and federal to make these changes happen. >> okay. >> president of brady, kris brown. it's always good to see you, my friend. thank you so much. >> thank you. it is a traffic backup that's costing billions and it's making what you pay at the pump go up. hat you pay at the pump go up. we look up to our heroes. idolizing them. mimicking their every move. and if she counts on the advanced hydration of pedialyte when it matters most... so do we. hydrate like our heroes. ♪♪ did you know prilosec otc can stop frequent heartburn hydbefore it begins?oes. heartburn happens when stomach acid refluxes into the esophagus. prilosec otc uses a unique delayed-release formula that helps it pass through the tough stomach acid. it then works to turn down acid production, blocking heartburn at the source. with just one pill a day, you get 24-hour heartburn protection. prilosec otc. one pill a day, 24 hours, zero heartburn. kevin bacon here. you know me from six degrees of well... me. but it's time to expand. see, visible is wireless with no surprise fees, legit unlimited data, powered by verizon for as little as $25 a month. but when you bring a friend every month, you get every month for $5. so i'm bringing everyone within 12 degrees of me. bam, 12 months of $5 wireless. visible. as little as $25 a month. or $5 a month when you bring a friend. powered by verizon. wireless that gets better with friends. alright, guys, no insurance talk on beach day. -i'm down. -yes, please.
