Unamerican this whole initiative is. Its sick. Its sick. Deciding in some states that you cannot bring water to people standing in line waiting to vote . The Republican Voters i know find this despicable. Republican voters. It is the most pernicious things. This makes jim crow look like jim eagle. We begin with two titans from two modern political parties. Adviser to bill Clinton James carville and michael steele, who ran the rnc, is an analyst for us here. Good evening to both of you. No surprise to viewers. Were going to get to the politics. Theres plenty of it. Michael, i begin with something you care about, thats the morality. What did you think of this president using this first president ial conference to think as he did there about what he calls jim crow racist discrimination. He brought a different tone to this conversation than the last four, five years. He showed his interest in, compassion for these things impacting voters, not just citizens, not just in therms of health and covid and the economy, but also the very fundamental thing that we appreciate constitutionally, and that is the right to vote, and to stand behind that pulpit and call it out, if you will, is important. It is an Important Message that sends a signal around the country that we need to raise our awareness, but we also are going to be called to action on this. It will be interesting to see how the courts respond in places like georgia and arizona, how citizen respond, because unlike in the past where these things have been said and kind of pushed off to the side, to have the president engage affirmative, as opposed to what we have seen over the past four years districtively, is a different call. Now the test will be on us, as citizens, to meet the challenge of the president to stick our moral courage to that sticking point, if you will, to make sure that these types of offenses to our democracy are rebuffed. I hear you on that. James carville, these conversations can get weedsy. Times its the people making the Voting Restrictions that want it that way, because they say, well, its not the same if its about which day or mail authentication or voter i. D. , you start getting into the thicket. Again, its not my job on the news to tell people how to vote or how to think, but i can tell people you have a right to vote. If people in power are trying to take away and limit your right, you need to Pay Attention and we need to stop them. I thought it was so striking for the president to not getting in that thicket of this or that rule and just saying theyre trying to prevent you from being ability to drink water in line to exercise your right. He took it beyond the law to the real foundation. I wonder what you thought of that, james. I mean this is kind of a ridiculous argument. We have evolved from i like my person better than your person, but over the years we had an unspoken agreement you ought to lit people vote and look, 64 of the people in florida voted to give convicted felons the right to vote. Are we really going to argue in georgia, as i like to say, was it a waitress at the waffle house gets the right to vote . Whether a delta Baggage Handler can vote . Whether a greeter at home depot can vote . Thats the level of the conversation. The republicans no longer run on an agenda. Theyre trying to distill the voting bloc to where only their people can vote. I mean, people say, well, he fought and bled for your right to vote. Thats no longer a Talking Point in the Republican Party. Its such a ridiculous escalation of something thats gone on. I dont think the chairman and i would have ever thought we would be having this discussion in 2012, 2008 or 04, or whatever the heck it was. Its pretty ridiculous. I appreciate the bluntness on that. James was speaking so forcefully, we lost hi camera for a second. Thats what hot rhetoric will do, james. [ laughter ] i think we have you back. Well, you know, im sure you get all kinds of zoom calls. Youre a busy guy there. The politics is interesting, because President Biden has the power now, he has some wind at his back, but we always want to give people the facts and full context. As recently as december, there was signaling going on biden signals to aides that he would serve only a single term. Because in august, biden talked about if he beats trump, maybe he would run again, maybe he couldnt. Anyone can change their mind. Hes the most powerful person in the country. He struck a slightly different neoknow. Take a listen today. Reporter have you decided whether you are going to run for reelection in 2024 . You havent set up a Reelection Campaign by this time as your predecessor. My predecessor needed to. My predecessor. My god, i miss him. The answer is yes, i plan to run for reelection. Thats my expectation. What is he doing politically there . Well, first of all, hes going to say hes going to run. He wont be two months into a fouryear term and say im not going to run. They should some fool asked if harris would be his running mate . Please. The White House Press corps, i give a dplus, and thats only because im notoriously an easy grader. Some of this stuff was ridiculous. Im serious, ari. No one is going to same im not running for reelection, so youre a lame duck two months into your term . I think in the pool has of louisiana, theres a lot of green between here and there. You know, theres a lot of politics left. I agree. That question to me was just in the context of Everything Else thats on our plate as a nation, it just was like, really . Thats what youre going to use your time with that question . The answers are obvious, and i dont know what the intent was to maybe get the president to Say Something that would make news . But save it for two years from now and then ask it. It seemed kind of dumb to me. Yeah, but hey, i feel that. The press talks about everyone else, and weve got some political experts talking about the press. I dont think most people who are out there are thinking about the recession and reopening are thinking about fouryear politics. Its interesting both of you interpret as the main strategy, you keep your options open and later hell deal with what he wants to die. Yeah. Of course. Moving to policy, which matters to everyone, there were a lot of immigration questions. We have been watching the border, the question strongly defending what hes done up to now. Take a look. The truth of the matter is nothing has changed. As many people came, 28 increase in children at the border in my administration. 31 in the last year of in 2019 before the pandemic in the trump administration. It happens every single solitary year. Fact check true. There are these surges of unaccompanied minors at the border. It was higher previously, and biden bluntly went after his predecessor. By the way, does anyone suggest there was a 31 increase under trump baas he was a nice guy . What did trump do . He eliminated that funding, and he in fact shut down the number of beds available. He did not fund hhs. He dismantled all of that. What we are doing now is attempting to rebuilt. This matters, because what we are seeing here is this new president with the mastery of immigration details, going after the cartoonish issues out there, if a president is somehow warmer or more humanitarian, it automatically increases the migration. A president asked if any of this was acceptable, and heres how he responded. Thats a serious question, right . Is it acceptable . Come on. Thats why were going to be moving is,000 of those kids out quickly. Thats why i got fort bliss open up. Thats why ive been working since this moment happened to try to find additional access for children to be able to safely to be able to safely be housed while we follow through on the rest of whats happening. Thats totally unacceptable. James, what did you think of the president there . I thought he was great. There is no border crisis. Every march, it was a sterling piece of Academic Research that this happens in march. Ive been in this country for three quarters of a century. Im very glad to be in a country that people want to come to. Joe biden was clear during the campaign. He was not for open borders, he was for a humane policy, and all the questions being driven by fox news and newsmax on the socalled border crisis, which is a border problem, not a crisis, and not one question about covid. Again, im changing my dplus to a d. The more i think about it, the worse it is. Isnt live action great . [ laughter ] well, its an interesting point. Michael, i dont want too, you know, fancy on this, what james is discussing is the fact that one of the great powers of the press when they asked questions is the agendasetting function. Theres a lot of data on this. If the press keeps asking about the deficit, suddenly it seems the deficit is more important. And as james said there were more offbeat questions, but go ahead, michael. While james and i are dancing, im going to step on his toes a bit. Okay. I think admittedly the president came into this with a very, very short runway. He didnt have the kind of transition to allow him to get in front of the issues that were already beginning to brew at the border, as we saw at the end of the year. The fact still remains that the press does ask legitimate questions around what is not just the strategy here, but what are you communicating to the country on this . They are playing a bit of catchup in this space right now. As our friend and colleague Jacob Soboroff has accounted through his reports whats going on there at the locations of the border that hes covered, there are legitimate questions and concerns about how quickly the turnover and the turnaround is going to take place. So whats the timeline . What the president has done, and i think hes done it pretty effectively is tried to claw back in front of the narrative on this. That is not an easy thing to do. He started out this conversation behind, and this leads to the fact that youre holding this your first Major Press Conference 65 days into your term, these are types these types of things are going to accumulate. Now, if this if youre out in front on this narrative four weans ago, youre in a very different Conversation Point than you are four weeks later. I think thats what were seeing some of that playing out right now, particularly in this Press Conference on this issue of immigration. All right. Im back to dplus. Youve got a point. I was going to ask you, james, if you had a grade for michaels response disagrees with your grade . He moved me from a d to a dplus. He made a good point. I acknowledge its a problem. I dont think its a crisis. I defer to the great champion of the Republican Party. Theres a lot of kumbaya vibes here. [ laughter ] you have a mind, youve got to be able to change it. I did want to play one other moment. That is some of the this empathy we have seen from this new president. Obviously a contrast to the past, which he was asked about. Take a look. I make for apologies for any programs that did not exist before trump became president that have an incredibly negative impact on the law, international law, as well as on human dignity. So i make no apologies for that. The idea that im going to say which i would never do if an unaccompanied child ends at the border, were going to let them starve to death and stay on the other side. No Previous Administration did that, either, except trump. Im note going to do it. Michael, this goes broader than that policy at hand and this goes to this president speaking to that assembled press corps, by saying, hey, if we treat anything in the last four years like he has to respond to it or adjust for it, that normalizes what he views was an aaberrant problem. That turns this narrative upsidedown a bit more in the past. I think it plays to the president s advantage. He comes in with his compassion on his sleeve. He comes into this presidency into an issue like this as understanding the joe. When he stands there in a moment like that, and he says im not going to let that happen. You can say whatever you want about me and my administration and what i have failed to do, but im not going to let a child starve at our borders edge, that i think also resonates with a lot of folks out there. It draws us to look at this through a different lens than donald trump drew us to look at it through, which was, you know, theyre coming across the border. It was other, we should by afraid of them, were going to build a wall, were going to stop it. Hes saying were going to stop it, and in fact the border is closed. The president has made it clear, better were also going to be compassionate. I think that playing well for the president. Michael comes back for Something Special later in the show. James stays with me. 30 seconds break. How biden decided to do something he rarely does roast donald trump. Were back in 30. Y does roast donald trump were back in 30 bake . Shake and bake our lawyers just want you to know that this isnt real. Thats my boy. Just remember my motto if you aint first. All youre last purchase and get 10 per horsepower with dodge power dollars. Thats 7,970 on the Dodge Challenger srt hellcat redeye. Were back, covering joe bidens firstever Press Conference as president. James carville is here. I want to show you where the president slammed and even mocked donald trump. What did trump do . He eliminated that funding. He didnt use it. He didnt do it. Building back up the capacity that should have been maintained and built upon, that trump dismantled. No Previous Administration did that, either, except trump. My predecessor needed to. My predecessor. Oh, god, i miss him. Joe biden laying it out there. Its a reminder what a contrast this was to what Press Conferences had become over the last four years. I didnt say that. Reporter you said it on sean hannity why dont you people act in a little more positive. Its always trying to get you. Get you, get you. You know what . Thats why nobody trusts the media. I say youre a terrible reporter. I think thats a nasty question. Thats cnn, fake new. Go ahead, thank you very much. Everybody. Were joined now by msnbc alicia menendez. Your thoughts on the contrast . Right. I mean, it was nice to see some sparring back and forth, Good Spirited sparring. It strikes me, even as were talking about a return to supposedly normal, you looked at that pressroom and were reminded that we are no the in normal times. You had a limited number of press in there. They were still socially distanced from one another. They were still wearing masks. I think it was telling that the president came in and started talking about coronavirus response, almost anticipating it was possible that the press could not ask him about it, wouldnt end up asking a question about the economy. Then i also thought it was interesting, ari, for all of the talk, for all of the questions about immigration and what is currently happening at the southern border, there were still a lot of questions that remained unanswered. For example, title 42, which is something immigration advocates are focused on, this policy that the Biden Administration has continued to use to expel immigrants at the border, and whether they continue to use that policy. What do they see as their relationship with mexico . When it comes to and all of these questions perhaps obscuring the biggest question, which again to this point about a return to normal, im not sure it would be normal to ask a question of this magnitude, but what does President Biden imagine as a fair and humane Immigration System . Like, if you werent talking just about what is happening in this moment, you stepped back as you said, this happened in 2014. This happened in 2019. How do you reimagine americas Immigration System, beyond the investment in central america, beyond what theyre doing at the border. How do you fundamentally recon superintendentualize it so youre not having the same conversation in two years, in four years. The other thing that broke through, weve been reporting here on the beat about what bipartisanship actually means these days . We mentioned this last night, even. Today it was interesting to see President Biden, james, also getting in on that point. Im not talking about the elected officials. Im talking about voters. Voters. What i know i have now is i have electoral support from Republican Voters. Republican voters. Unless mitch says the last thing i did, the last piece of legislation is so far left, well, then he ought to take a look at his party. Over 50 of them must be over that edge as well, because they support what i did. They support what i did. You could hear the president there that was something he clearly had planned to say. He had the data with him. He has half the Republican Party with him on some issues. That goes to the other big question. Most of the fights ahead will depend on how the senate runs. Whether Mitch Mcconnell can do the same kind of obstruction hes been doing. The president seemed open to ending it. If we have to, if theres complete lockdown and chaos as a consequence of the filibuster, then well have to go beyond what im talking about. James, you have been in and out of these issues for so long, the abuse of that tactic, the filibuster has never been worse. Curious, your view political of what biden is doing there, using this big pulpit, this big day to tell folks who may not follow it closely every day, if they didnt hear, half of the Republican Party is with him. That gives him a strength, a muscle, if they need, to change the senate. Right. Theyre going to do that. Clearly, with the other things, i think theyre going to do that. I want to make a larger point. I actually think the president was having fun today. When he took that jab at the former president , and he talked about hi had been in the senate for 120 years, i said to myself, it was 115, as i remember, but i think he was having a good time. Theres an idiot daily caller, because he was referring to notes. What are you doing . Are you taking a bar exams . Thats the best they could come up with, that he was using notes . I think President Biden was enjoying himself today. I thought he did fine. Better than fine. They knew they were going to get this question. That answer was very well rehearsed, well thought out. It was fine. I got to tell you, i might be biased, but alicia, i use notes at work every day. When i used to practice law, i used a lot of notes. If thats considered a dis james has his notes. If the trump smoke is still brewing around washington, that writing down what you plan to say, because you care about details, facts and preparation, so be it. Thats a funny, but fair point. Alicia, one more contrast. Take a look. Youre going to have to take it off. How many feet are you away . Ill speak louder. If you dont take it off, youre very muffled. If you take it off, it would be easy. Is that better . Its better, yeah. Yeah, its better. Can you commit to the American People by may 2nd, the u. S. Will no longer have forces in afghanistan . The answer is that its going to be hard to meet the may 1 deadline. Alicia, i dont want to go full sesame street, but one of these things is not like the other. No. I mean, its a pretty sick burn to say someone uses notes when you just dont care about facts, i guess this im not even sure what the insult is supposed to be, but there were so many substantive differences, ari. When you listened to him talk about china and talk about the value of the fact this is a person who believes that were in a moment where democracy needs a champion, that we have to prove to the rest of the world that democracy can work, i think part of the reason that he sort of explicitly was invoking trump through the course of this presser is because otherwise he was the elephant in the room, not just stylist lickly, not just tonally, but when it comes to domestic issues, Foreign Policy issues, this administration is very much unwinding a lot of what they did. The filibuster i think was the biggest news made today. When hes talked before, i dont think hes quite this far about doing even more. Thats significant to the moderate members of his own party who still have not made their own decision where they are. You have the potential of that unifying the caucus. Vp harris coming in with the final vote. When he keeps coing back to i was elected to solve problems, well keep running up against these truths, theyre going to have to contend with the filibuster to get any of those things done. Exactly. Exactly. Were turning to some Breaking News on voting rights. Thank you, james and alicia, for their coverage and input tonight. Coming up, mcconnell has a new complaint about biden that may be blowing up in his face. We have a special new thing were debuts with michael steele. Thats later in the hour. We are reporting Breaking News right now. Georgias republican governor is about to sign what the legislature passed, and it will be one of the nations most restrictive voting laws in the whole country. What youre looking at here is Governor Brian Kemp here. Hes speaking were not going to take his remarks, though we have the information, but he is explaining why hes about at the precipice of signing this controversial legislation. Let me give you some context. This comes as a new crop of activists are pushing to try to stop exact this type of problem or create economic consequences. Activists lie bishop jackson, saying its time for Corporate America to break with donald trump, and corporations who said they werent for the insurrection, cant sitly silently when all of this turns into trying to steal potentially the next election the ceo said organizations like ours must stand up and support black lives matter and social justice. Now when they try to pass this racist legislation, we cant get him to say anything. This new georgia bill that the governor is signing now has these i. D. Requirements, hits on where you can drop ballot boxes. It makes it, quote, a crime to provide even water to voters waiting in lines. Thats the very thing the president rebuked today that we showed earlier on our program. On this Breaking News, i want to bring in the bishop we just saw. Bishop reginald jackson, he oversees the states a. M. E. Churches. Good to see you. Good to be with you. My producers tell me i can confirm and report he has signed this controversial bill. It is law in the state of georgia. Whether or not there are legal changes or other ways to stop it before implementation, your responsible to this Breaking News tonight. Its interesting, we were at the statehouse protesting against the legislation. A group of Faith Leaders met with the governor to discuss it. We tried to have a meeting with the governor whose office said he was busy and couldnt meet. Now we understand it wasnt that he couldnt meet, it was that he already decided to sign this bill and wouldnt meet. What do you say to people hearing this tonight, it sounds like a state issue . Georgia turned the whole senate and we have seen this moving through the process in several states. What do you say to people about why this matters . This is not only a georgia problem. Its a national problem. Following the last election here in georgia, when georgia went blue for the First Time Since 1992. None of these bills would have been submitted if the republicans had wont. They bills are submitted because republicans lost. They claim they submit the bills because theres a lack of integrity and confidence in georgia election, but thats sheer hypocrisy. In 2018, the then secretary of state, who was also the republican candidate for governor, dropped 500,000 names off the rolls in georgia, many of them people of color. There was no outcry, no investigation, there was no legislation, there was no saying we didnt have confidence in the election. When black folk complained about what happened in 2018, there was a deafening silence. When the former liarincheer said the election was stolen from him, All Of A Sudden Georgia had no confident in this eelection. Three recounts, one audit, court case after court case, nothing, and they still claim they passed this law today because of the lack of confidence. Thats a lie, its Voter Suppression and racism. I appreciate your candor. For viewers joining us, voters as well. What you see on the screen is Governor Kemp in georgia signing this voting crackdown. We want to bring back in michael steele. Context from the New York Times here, which we can put up on the screen, republicans, quote, seizing more power over how elections are run. State legislatures, also in georgia, is looking to strip the state Elections Official of their role on the election board, so he would lose power. Michael, as the bishop was saying, the multiple attacks if georgia paint a picture of something thats not about, say, Voter Integrity if you want to call it that, but as the bishop said a more organized response to losing an election. Its just trying to suppress votes from the other side. Michael . I think youre right. The question to reps and voters in georgia and elsewhere, who are taking rights away from black people in places like philadelphia, atlanta, detroit, how do you think this ends . How do you think this ends . Do you think black folks will just sit by and let you get away with this . Do you think the bishop and others will say, gosh, i guess theres nothing with he can do. The Georgia Legislature j. C. Passed this . Every last one of your names will go on a ballot. Enjoy your time in office. You will see the power of the vote come back like a hammer. Like a hammer, for the action you have taken and the bill that was signed into law today. Its antithetical. This is suppression. And what are you going to do about it . Watch and see. There are consequences here. Dont just think people will roll over. You cant have a drink of water brought to you while youre standing in a line to vote . By the way, a line created by policies like this when you move good working machines out of the black neighborhoods and put in bad machines, or you dont fix the machines that are there, or you move polling places so instead of make 1,000 people in the course of a day, 3,000 people show up to thats built to accommodate 1,000 . You dont think thats going to have a consequence . Its just amazing to me that you are so afraid, so afraid to put good candidates and good policy in front of the people of georgia or the people of this country that you have to resort to this kind of crap. Bishop, whatever help you need on the ground, count a lot of us in to help. This is not what this country should be about. Thank you so much. Thank you. Michael steele reacting to this. We had the video feed there. You saw Governor Kemp sign the bill, and ultimately walking off. Before i lose you, bishop, i want to show some of that backlash effort, cocacola one of the companies that has responded to your and other activists push, it says it supports a balanced approach, where voting is broadbased and inclusive. What are the next steps for you on those companies and potential legal challenges to now what is formally tonight law in georgia . You know, thats a nebulous statement by cocacola. Either Voter Suppression is wrong or right. Thats for cocacola, thats for delta, thats for home depot. All of these major corporations, they get black dollars. So, therefore, if you cannot stand up and support black and brown people when it comes to issues of voting injustice, it does not make sense for us to put our dollars into your hands. Okay. This is a story that in a sense begins tonight, now that its state law. Bishop jackson, thank you very much. Michael steele comes back again for Something Special. As performed, we turn to something were excited about right now. Our friend, michael steele, is known for everything from running the entire rnc to inspiring his own comic muppet back in the day on jon stewarts daily show. Steele knows politics, but he also brings a lot of latenight energy. Take a look. Welcome to late night baby. So heres my boy. Hello, ari. There you go. Im feeling the thrill of the grill. You knows i likes to chill. Thats what im talking about. This has been going on for some time, with all credit to the daily show. When weve done some latenight stuff we get the looser latenile teeth. We are going to start doing something here we call, early late night with michael steele. He has obliged or muppet obsession. Thanks for doing this. Bring it, baby, lets go. Lets go. Like i said, im feeling the thrill, because you know i likes to chill. Bring it on. Good. You dont have to you dont need any explanation of the concept. One of the mug, you dont know whats in it. Dude, it is [ laughter ] it is late somewhere, okay . Yeah. Exactly. Its late night somewhere. With that loose vibe in mind, i want your Straight Talk on the mcconnell of it all. Take a look here at Mitch Mcconnell complaining theyre not being nice and bipartisan to him. I havent been invited to the white house so far this administration. Im not interested in doing anything on a bipartisan basis in the political center. I dont believe ive spoken with him when he was sworn in. We had a couple conversations before then. Michael, Straight Talk. So thats funny mitch. Thats funny mitch. Thats mitch bringing his humor. Thats his humor agame. We know what the biden folks have been doing, knocking on the door, hello, you want to talk to us . Then you hear muffled, no, nobody is here. Youve been approached by the Biden Administration, but thats what mitch does. He will stand there and look you in the eye and go, your flys open, and youll go, no, no it isnt, and no, it really is. Its all to get you to blink. The reality is its just a play off the narrative. Its just that as you point out, mitch, thats the thing that he likes that it feels illogical. He likes that it sounds crazy, because its just programming for him. That is it. I want to get to another big story. Headlines hitting Governor Cuomo left and right, specifically on covid. Oh, lord. Everything from insider access for special people early on, to those allegations, to the call about resigning. Some of this involved even potentially helping his own family testing. Take a look at him with his family, with his brother on cnn. Take a look. Some say that, going on shows like ellen where shes pumping your head up with helium, how great you are, Rolling Stone a nonin the neighbor, think who you are. To do ellen it was a pleasure. She was j. C. Telling the truth. Does Governor Cuomo have a substantive problem here . He did. I look at his narrative and just go, damn, this is how you slam into a big political wall. You think about where we were this time a year ago with the governor, with the Press Conference and the country rivets big his smarts, and preparation. And to have that curtain peeled back, to see that youre trying to get uptight with your staff and you got all these ladies in the background saying, what about us . And then youve got now narratives coming about how you handled not just Senior Citizens facilities, but members of your own family. So its for this governor right now, look, at some point youve got to take a step back in politics and go, okay, am i doing more damage than good .
