father of seven. we have more questions about who the other victims are, the day's first briefing with investigators on the ground begins. we're going to bring that to you live and we're talking to a witness that ran for his life in the chaos. this mass shooting in boulder comes less than a week after the multiple shootings outside of atlanta where eight people were killed. as it all happens we're live on capitol hill where a prescheduled hearing already set on reducing gun violence is about to begin any minute. good morning, i'm hallie jackson with steve paterson, garrett haake, and special agent executive katherine switz. bring us up to speed on where the investigation stands right now. we know it is expected to last three or four more days. >> yeah, hallie, it's early. while we may expect to hear new light shed on the suspect, the victims, the motive, the motive that he used to fire that weapon, we still need to know more from police about a timeline as well. police saying, as you mentioned, that this could take several more days before we get some of this information. it may take several more hours, at least, before they're able to properly identify all of the people who tragedy lost their lives and then to notify next of kin as well. police say they're doubling their efforts on that as a public service. meanwhile, political telling us that the suspect is in custody, as you know, taken in with injuries. treating for those injuries, and his identity and motive for firing that weapon not known at this time but we may learn more in the next 30 minutes or so. meanwhile this community reeling from this shooting waking up this morning to that abject horror of what happened yesterday afternoon. talking to members. hearing the shots ring out in the storm. several of them saying and hoping they were from a dropped item from the back or heavy machinery. but the horror settling in that these were gunshots. rhythmic gunshots. they say he was stoic, not in a spray pattern, but a burst pattern. police still withholding his name and the investigation about the rest of the victims. we know one victim, of course, eric talley, 51 years old, an 11 year veteran of the bolder police department. first to rush in and try to save as many lives as possible. several law enforcement experts say he likely saved lives just by his actions that he took. learning more tragic details about not just the officer but the man, the father of seven, the oldest of his children 20 years old. the youngest seven years old. and that he was trying to find a new way, training to be a drone officer, trying to find a new way to get off of the front line so his family would not have to go through this. and they found out he did, and a horrible blow to the community and the boulder police department that is reeling. hopefully we'll learn more about the other victims toon soon. >> i want to bring in brian now who was in the super market when this happened. ryan, good morning to you. how are you this morning? >> i'm doing okay. kind of still coming to terms with things. and taking my time. kind of hoping that these interviews are part of the process. >> that maybe talking about it might help. i hear you. can you tell us about what happened. you were towards the front of the store when this started. can you tell us what you saw and heard? >> there is two entrances to the store. an east side and a west side. both have their own self check out cash registers. i came in the west side, started walking to the east side for ice cream. changed my mind. walked a little way into an aisle and i heard gunshots. like the previous person you were speaking to said, there was confusion. the first shot i thought was a big steel pan or something that fell. that was followed by another shot. and then three more, maybe another three more. so i think i heard about eight. to me it sounded like pop, pop, pop pop pop, and by the third shot i was already running towards the back. >> where did you go? did you bring anyone with you? were there people running at that point? >> there was people in front of and behind me. i worked in a grocery store before, so maybe my intuition let me know that the back exit would be available to me. i knew that running even to the west exit would have put me closer to the shots fired. so when i saw a terrified face running towards me after the second shot i turned and i ran. i think she stayed on my tail as there was somebody always with their hand on my back and i had my hand on someone's back. we were just doing the fastest fire drill you have ever seen single file. when we got into the back of house where the employees were they were shocked to see customers running in there. we told them that there was a gun, someone was shooting, to run for their lives. probably said more like gun gun gun, run run run. and some people ran into what looked like a dead end storage room and employees and myself were trying to direct them towards where the exit was. towards the loading area where the shipping trucks arrive. we jumped out the back door. into the cargo bay underneath the trailer truck and over a hill in the back and as far away from the building as we could and that's when i called the police. >> at no point then did you see the shooter or witness how this ended at any point? it sounds like you were pretty far outside of the building, you moved pretty quick? >> yeah. i knew i was in a position where i didn't have any options. maybe i could have been a hero if i was within tackling distance of this person, but i wasn't. i wasn't even able to see him. and you know, i just knew that there was nothing that i could do except for run. i have listened to some recent self defense techniques and discussions on podcasts with sam harris, and you know one of them was just run. if someone has a gun on you and they tell you not to move, run. because if they shoot you that might be a injury. but if they take you somewhere or hold you hostage you have no control over the situation any more. so that lesson was fresh in my mind and i ran and the people along with me i think they kept up, i know there was 12 to 24 of us a that escaped out of the back. >> sounds like you did a great job directing people out to where there might be safety out the back of the grocery store. colorado has seen, every state in the country, but especially colorado has seen shootings like this before. you talk to people after these things and they say i never thought it could happen here in my community. did you think that? or did you always know as horrific as this is is something you could be faced with some day? >> no, i don't think i wanted to believe that i would have to face it. people in boulder refer to it as a bubble. there is open space around it. and it feels like sometimes the danger is from a college student that had too much to drink. and this is very different from that. i have climbed mountains and been in a position where i thought i might die only to hike myself out of there. it was like that. i felt like i was going to die. i had to get out of there and i could not count on anyone coming to rescue me. i don't feel like a hero, i felt like i just ran in the right direction and people followed. >> did you have a chance to tell police your point of view at this point. i don't know if your car was there or what, but did you share your story with the investigators? >> my vehicle is still in the parking lot behind police fence and tape and stuff. i wasn't approached by any police officers. as long as i was on the scene they had other things to focus on. still resolving in the several hours that i remained on scene. i spoke with a local news at first. at first only at my wife's insistence. she thought that journalists didn't know enough yet, but the police have not reached out to me yet. >> i'm so grateful to you for sharing your story with us and helping us understand what happened is there a message or what would you tell people outside of boulder about this community or what is happening now? >> i would absolutely say if it can happen in boulder it can happen anywhere. there is common sense gun measures that can bed, but every individual has a responsibility for their own mental state. for their own well-being. and everybody needs to work on themselves and reflect on e what they might view as their demons and realize that is part of the human psyche and we need to work on it. that's the only way that we can heal ourselves and heal the community. >> ryan wborowski. we lost your video but we are hearing your audio. thank you for being with us and for sharing your story. a lot of folks around the country, you, your family, and your boulder community, thank you. >> i want to bring in katherine now. you heard that discussion. you know there are so many questions that we don't have answers to. we're less than 24 hours now after this happened, but we don't know things like the motive. the names of the nine other people killed here. the kind of weapon used, where the shooter got it, where it ended, surveillance footage, any connection between the shooter and the supermarket itself. what is your number one priority? how soon do you think we can get some of the answers? >> i think the highest priority right now is making sure the victims and survivors are taken care of. there may be x number of bodies laying in that building and beside it, there are a huge number, as you just listened to ryan, there is a huge number of other survivors of the shooting. and that colorado community has a huge and very supportive layers services for victims and survivors. so really the living is who you want to tend to right now. from an investigative standpoint the investigators have a lot of those answers probably right now. how many people, what kind of weapons. probably the last thing will be motive. motive is what everyone wants, but it doesn't resolve an issue that we have right now. the surveillance cameras in the front of the building will show us what happened. the eyewitness testimony, and their job right now is working with local law enforcement officers to pick up the evidence properly. they have a live want it to be charged in the situation. they have a very keen and capable team out there picking up and gathering all of the evidence together. you get one time, and that's what they're doing right now. picking it up, checking all of the video cameras, and they're pulling all of that together. and their job now is to build a time line. a time line of what happened before the shooter came into the parking lot, and then into the building, and what happened afterwards. people may not know this, but you're one of the folks in charge of the fbis active shooter trainings. does it follow based on your expert analysis here, does it seem to follow best practices. the investigation is proceeding by the book as it should? >> yeah, i think that as the fbi in charge of active shooters and i wrote the research on the active shooters are and these types of shootings and still working on that obviously now. i think what we saw today was pretty indicative of what we have seen in progress over the years. five years ago, ten years ago, after sandy hook, there was just a lot of questions about what the priorities should be. and now i think when i see a response now i see the police officers went in right away. this is incredibly volatile situation. the most volatile they can deal with on their daily travels. it is what they have been trained to do, especially since sandy hook. >> katherine, thank you so much. go ahead and finish your sentence. >> i think that also we saw the civilian response which is the most encouraging. we saw the run, hide, fight encouraging responses for everyone. they're running and we need them to do that to stay alive. >> thank you, i want to bring in garrett haake who covers capitol hill for us. just a second ago we were hearing from chuck schumer on the senate floor, i think he just departed, saying basically that we must take action here. there are, in the past, we have seen shootings like this there is criticism that the discussion goes to politics. today is it just so happened there was a pre-scheduled hearing on how to reduce cut back gun violence in the country. >> democrats are argue that if you're talking about politics of gun control the day after a shooting you're bringing up politics too late. these are discussions that need to happen before the mass shootings occur. it's important to point out that this hearing happened today was not scheduled because of what happened in atlanta or boulder, the organizers of the hearing point out this is what happens in american. you can plot this on a calendar and it will be within rain of a range of a mass shooting. we have this hearing meant to cover topically questions about what the organizers say are responsible constitutional gun safety reforms. separately we have a majority leader on the floor saying the recently passed house bills that deal with universal background checks. dealing with closing the charleston loophole. those same bills that passed in the last conference, and sat on mitch mcconnell's desk will not sit on his desk. the question is facing these tough votes, will republicans also join in supporting these measures? will ahead to gun control bills when they come up be more fader for the debate about ending the filibuster that may procollude preclude them from passing the senate. >> unsurprisingly what happened in boulder has come up in the last couple minutes of the hearing saying the country has a couple epidemics. one is covid, the other is a epidemic on guns. garrett, we're going to keep you close to a camera. we anticipate more news coming up in ten minutes from now, investigators, were talking with reporters. the microphones you see her, answering questions that we still have after the shooting that we have been talking about. we're going to bring that to you live. we're also going to talk about the potential fourth coronavirus vaccine from astrazeneca. plus, the new economic plan being put out, potentially, by the white house. that is coming up, next. by the white house. that is coming up, next. we started with computers. we didn't stop at computers. we didn't stop at storage or cloud. we kept going. working with our customers to enable the kind of technology that can guide an astronaut back to safety. and help make a hospital come to you, instead of you going to it. so when it comes to your business, you know we'll stop at nothing. keeping your oysters business growing so when it comes thas you swamped. you need to hire. i need indeed indeed you do. the moment you sponsor a job on indeed you get a shortlist of quality candidates from a resume data base claim your seventy-five-dollar credit when you post your first job at indeed.com/promo for skin that never holds you back don't settle for silver #1 for diabetic dry skin* #1 for psoriasis symptom relief* and #1 for eczema symptom relief* gold bond champion your skin during photosynthesis, plants convert solar energy into chemical energy, cleaning the oxygen we breathe. plants clean the air. when applied to stained textiles, plant-based surfactants like the ones in seventh generation detergent trap stains at the molecular level and flush them away. plant-based detergents clean your clothes. it's just science! just... science. seventh generation. powered by plants. tackles stains. i'll be observing your safe-driving abilities. play your cards right, and you could be in for a tasty discount. [ electronic music playing ] ooh! ooh! who just gives away wood? the snapshot app from progressive rewards you for driving safe and driving less. there's an app? -[ chuckles ] beth. -save money with progressive. [ tires screech ] well, that came out of nowhere. so less than 24 hours ago we told you about a potential fourth covid vaccine from astrazeneca. now government health officials say that trial data may have included information that was out of date. dr. azar, good morning, thank you for being with us. >> thank you, good morning, hallie. >> we heard from dr. fauci about this specific issue a little bit ago. i want you to listen to what he had to say. >> if you look at the data it is quite good, but when they put it into the press release it wasn't completely accurate. we have to keep essentially trying as hard as we can to get people to understand that there are safeguards in place. >> i hate to say this, but was this just slobbiness? >> what the dsmb is supposed to do is what they have done, which is to make sure that they are analyzing the data and interpreting the data before anyone else sees it. they have concerns, they discuss it with pharmaceutical companies. that is supposed to happen in private and it is definitely unusual that on the same day that they release their press release, a couple hours later they go to the regulatory agencies and say hold up, we have a concern here. we just have a few statements from the company thus far is that it appear it's is probably just a concern about their statistical analysis and they need to validate that number perhaps they understand that there could be a subtle different there. >> so an even finer point on that then. there was questions about astrazeneca in europe. you heard from dr. f a, uci that the data looks and indicates like this is in all likelihood a very good vaccine. what's your message to people that if it becomes authorized and available, what's your message to folks about that. >> i think it would be nigh yeef to think that this has not undermined confidence. meth logically already about their reporting of data. it can be a very safe and effective vaccine, we may not need it here, but globally for the pandemic response. i think what reassures me is by the time they aplay for an eua and the fda independent pact goes through all of the data, scrutinizes it, by the time it goes through the immunization, i think they can feel pretty confident but this is clearly a public relations nightmare to put it bluntly for astrazeneca right now. >> there is questions about whether or not the u.s. may need that fourth vaccine. by the time they come in line with the suggestions that it may be waiting for the first or second. >> we would be using it widely in the u.s. it is fourth in line right now. it is less important, we just may not quantitatively meat it right now, but this pan determine ig might end but the virus is here to stay. we need options. we have multiple drug companies. we know we need booters. there is a lot of advantages. it is really a good thing to have in the arsenal and absolutely for the global response i don't think we can under state how important it actually is. >> thank you for joining us. for your expertise as always. and the first official pictures and videos inside of a couple texas border facilities where thousands of unaccompanied migrant children are being detained. we blurred some of the faces. they show you the living conditions in donna, texas. it was taken last week, last wednesday again provided by the government. we want to be clear on that. the administration has been under enormous pressure to let reporters into these facilities and as of this morning that is not has beening. i want to go to gabe gutierrez. talk about what we are and are not learning from some of these pictures and video and why it is significant that it is this specific facility that they're releasing photos on. >> yeah, hallie. as you said a lot to unpack there. i want to take you through this and first i want to show you the utah of the facility before we go in. border patrol vehicles, buses, and this is a very busy facility. we have more than 3700 people in this facility. that was as of sunday. it was built for 250. so nearly 15 times the amount of people here. i want to go to the video released by customs and border protection. they also released pictures and stills of a facility in el paso as well. it does depict crowded but orderly conditions. but it also does not focus a great deal with the sleeping quarters where we see minors sleeping with those blankets in cramped situations on mats on the floor. and advocates are saying that is the most difficult part of this. yesterday a texas congressman leaked photos from inside of this facility and the pressure is mounting on the biden administration to release the videos, back to you. >> while this is happening, president biden is struggling with not just this, but getting ready to leave for ohio in a couple hours. the administration is eyes it's next multitrillion plan. this one to fund priorities about infrastructure, education, climate change, it has a pretty hefty price tag. up to $3 trillion. administration officials are getting ready to present the president with options this week. they say no decisions have been made about the official pathforward. the biden administration has one covid relief package under their belt. they're looking at what the next legislative push would be. now we're starting to get some answers? >> that's right, and the way the white house has been thinking about all of this is you start with the premise that there was a massive hole that they needed to fill at the beginning of their administration. dealing with the pandemic and all of the economic fallout. now they're looking for a new foundation for economic growth across the country here. and that's what is being discussed in the white house and with congressional leadership. in talking to a senior administration official, they say the broader context should not be a surprise to anyone that has been watching this campaign. and that includes a made in america focus with infrastructure, of course, dealing with care giving as well. what the white house is now dealing with is not necessarily what is dealing with the plan, but how to pass it. on a bipartisan basis, whatever they can get 60 votes for in the senate, but there is also an acknowledgment that some of this has to be part of a reconciliation package. another thing that will be only 50 votes in the senate and especially how to pay for it. i'll send it back to you as we have breaking news in colorado. >> live in the white house for us. we have heard from vice president harris on the boulder shooting. now we'll bring up that little box in your full screen here. we expect this news con for instance to begin any second. you saw someone come to the microphone hearing who we will hear from. in a matter, any minute really, we expect the news conference to be on time. we will hear from the police chief, the colorado governor will appear here, and one colorado lawmaker. the acting u.s. attorney and the fbi agent leading the investigation and handling that here in colorado. so we may get answers to questions that we have been talking about here. ten people have been left dead. so i want to bring back in steve paterson who is in boulder, not far from where this is happening. pete williams is joining ulgs. also special agent in charge jim cavanagh. looks as if we're seeing the delegation that will speak come out. and probably in 15 seconds what is the one key thing that we're listening for this morning. >> motive, identity, coconspirators, other weapons. >> jim, we didn't even have 15 seconds. let's go in now. >> thank you, thank you for everybody being here today. dozens of agencies continue to investigate yesterday's mass shooting at the king supers. the boulder county korners -- the last victim was removed at 1:30 a.m. today. by 3:59 a.m. the families of the victims have been identified. i'm going to read the names of the deceased. denise strong, 20 years old. ricky odds, 25. suzanne fountain, 59. terri liker, 51. officer eric talley, 51. kevin mahony, 61. lynn murray, 62. jodi waters, 65. our hearts go out to all of the victims killed during this sense less act of violence. we're committed for a thorough investigation and we'll bring justice to each of these families. regarding the suspect at approximately 2:40. on monday, march 22nd. officers were dispatched to king supers. officers arrived and immediately entered the store and engaged the suspect. there was an exchange of gunfire and the suspect was shot. no other officers were injured. the suspect was taken into custody at 3:28 p.m. he was transported to the hospital for treatment. now in stable condition. this suspect has been identified ahmad alyssa. he has been charged with ten counts of murder in the first degree. he will be transferred to the boulder county jail. the victim's information will be forthcoming. i appreciate you being here. and i want to say to the community i'm so sorry that this incident happened. we're going to do everything in our power to make sure this suspect has a thorough trial. we do a thorough investigation. and with this i'm going to turn it over to the governor, sir? >> thank you, chief, for your extraordinary work for the last day and a half. and there will be a lot more ahead. of course i'm standing here, not just as governor, but as someone who called this community my home for most of my life, and who has shopped at that king supers in table mesa many times across my life. my heart aches today. i think all of ours does as coloradoans and we hear those names and feel the loss of life. everybody here, we're a small community. we're looking over the list, do we know anybody. we all know people that know people, people of all ages. people who started their day with a cup of coffee reading the morning paper, or perhaps getting their kids ready and putting on a winter coat to go out. maybe they were making last minute spring break plans, but none of them expected that this would be their last day here on the planet. a simple run for milk and eggs, you know, getting ready to shop living in a regular way. something we all identify with, lead to complete tragedy here today. our hearts ache for those that lost their lives. for their families, for the survivors left behind. for the survivors able to get out, who have scars that can't be scene, but are every bit as painful. i want to thank the boulder police department, the first responders, so many police from agencies across the state that came to the call in a time of need. not only did we lose ten lives, but this is real horror and terror for all of us. this simple act of shopping in a grocery store. in the last day and a half, the last 12 hours family and friends were notified. everybody quietly hoping it wasn't your friend or your coworker or your family member. many residents of south boulder had people checking in seeing are you okay? are you okay? and this loss is especially painful for the friends and family members of those left bind. i offer my condolences to all of those that suffer loss. this is a loss and we mourn those that fell as a state and we mourn them as a nation. this has been a painful year. and we sit here once again surrounded by seemingly incomprehensible senseless loss. this is a pain that we need to sit with. we can't let ourselves ever become numb to the pain. we simply can't let this be accepted as anything close to normal occurrence. there is a full investigation under way. the eyes of the nation are on boulder. the eyes of the nation are on colorado. and every level of law enforcement, federal, state, and local, is working together to make sure that we can bring justice in this case. that is exactly what boulder police officer eric talley was doing as he lost his life in the line of duty. he was trying to save others. the state of colorado has 35 people from the colorado bureau of investigations and state troopers assisting the investigation since yesterday. we offered to help with victim services as well. and of course boulder community has the full support of state and federal law enforcement as we go about the difficult task ahead. the unfairness of it all is difficult for people to process. flags had barely been raised back to full mass after the tragic shooting in atlanta that claimed eight lives and now a tragedy here close to home. at a grocery store that could be any of our neighborhood grocery stores. this last weekend in colorado many people had the chance to enjoy the beautiful spring weather. a sense of renewal and hope ahead. perhaps that we were on a precipice of normalcy. i hope that the victims today got some simple pleasure on that beautiful spring day. before tragedy hit. i wish i could stand here and promise that the pain will heal quickly. it won't, but for the family and friends and our community, the loss endures. and at times like this it is hart to see the light that signs from the darkness. we all need space to mourn, to help those that are left behind. the space to ask the simple question why. space to support those that made it out of the grocery store. with their lives, with lifelong scars that we cannot see. space to celebrate the ten lives that were lost yesterday. and we need the fortitude to carry on. we will hold the evil doer responsible for the extent of his actions and we will always remember the people. i want to turn it over to joe neguse, congressman of the area. >> thank you, governor polis. i want to thank everyone for their leadership. to the chief of police. to the federal partners interim u.s. attorney kersh and fbi special agent in charge, schneider, for their efforts. i think you will hear from them at the local level. it has been strong and important as we deal with this terrible mass shooting here in our community. it has been a devastating 24 hours for boulder and our state. like the governor, this is my community. we lived in boulder county for many years. my wife was born in boulder. we went to school in boulder. this is our community. and we are heart broken. absolutely heart broken for the pain and the anguish that so many in our community and across our state are feeling today. ten lives lost. ten friends, neighbors, sisters, brothers, parents, colleagues, community members. families that are grieving today. they woke up today without their loved ones. including an officer who bravely died in the line of duty protecting this community. his service and his sacrifice will never be forgotten. like many of you, my heart is heavy and it is in grief and in anguish. the loss of life is truly heartbreaking and unimaginable. so our hearts, our thoughts, our prayers are with the families of those victims. with the survivors of yesterday's terrible mass shooting. with the front line grocery store employees. and with every member of our community here in boulder. as the governor said yesterday, coloradoans went to their local king supers to pick up groceries. to buy eggs. some of them to get a covid vaccine. in a mere instant our community was upturned by a senseless act of violence. this year's coloradoans we have faced a lot of challenges and in this year of separation due to covid. of loss and loneliness. grocery stores like king supers has been one of our gathering places. it is hard to describe what it means for this safe place to see a horrible tragedy like this unfold. there is a lot that we don't know, there is a lot still unfolding from yesterday's events. but let me simply say this, it cod be our new normal, we should be able to feel safe in our grocery stores, in our schools, our movie theaters, and in our communities. we need to see change. because we have lost far too many lives. as i said i lived in boulder county for many years. and one thing that i'm sure of is this -- our community is strong, it is kind. it is compassionate, and it is resilient. and we will get through this together. as we comfort each other, and as we begin the process of healing in the coming days and weeks and tough months ahead. i would now like to turn it over to the mayor of boulder, sam weaver. >> referee: good morning, today our city is driving the senseless loss of ten lives in our community. the people killed yesterday were individuals going about their daily business when a man with a gun monstrously struck them down. they had family and friends, loves and passions. dreams of tomorrows that will no longer come for them. we feel these losses in our bones. some of us more deeply than others, but all of us are agonized by this tragedy. there will be time to come to pursue justice, repair damage, seek answers, and pursue remedies. but today we remember, we appreciate, and we honor the lives of those that were killed. one of those we remember is boulder police officer eric talley who was gunned down as he valiantly protected those in mortal danger. he was a heroic public servant that joins the ranks of six other boulder police officers that have laid down their lives for the people of our city. we can never thank officer talley or his family enough for their sacrifice, but we will not forget it. many are alive today because of the actions of eric talley and other first responders and their bravery is a blessing to us all. boulder's a city full of giving and resilient people, and we will help each other heal and recover from this tragedy. boulder's also an active and energetic community, and we will put our energy to use in repairing the civic fabric which has been torn. and boulder is a thoughtful and visionary community, and we will work to build a future in which tragedies like this live in a distant and unimaginable past. today we will grieve and we will console one another and remember the ten precious souls we lost yesterday. thank you. i'll turn it over to boulder d.a. michael dougherty. >> good morning. i'm michael dougherty, and i am the district attorney for boulder county. yesterday boulder suffered a tragic and horrific attack. the victims who were food shopping were engaged in an everyday act, something we all do, and it turned out to be their last day on earth. i cannot imagine the pain and agony that their loved ones, their families, are feeling right now. and, to them, i want to say this. i promise you that all of us here will work tirelessly to support you and help you through this process and also to make sure the killer is held absolutely and fully accountable for what he did to them, to all the loved ones and friends of the victims, and to the boulder community yesterday. officer eric talley died heroically. he was one of the many outstanding members of boulder county law enforcement, and he had been an officer here at the boulder police department and the patrol car behind us is here in his honor today. he died charging into the line of fire to save people who were simply trying to save their lives and go food shopping. and the man who gunned them down will be held fully responsible. there were ten people killed yesterday. the chief, chief herold, read off the names of all ten. i would ask you to join me, as a community, as a country, in honoring and respecting all ten of the victims. the killer, his name, that will live in infamy. but today let us remember the victims and let us work tirelessly for them to make sure the right thing happens in this case. and i can promise that is our solemn commitment to the victims and the families and to this community. why did this happen? we don't have the answer to that yet, and the investigation is in the very early stages and the investigators are working hard to determine that. that information will come. what i can tell you today is that boulder and colorado is giving its very best to the response of what happened. we've had agencies from all around the metro area, district attorneys and prosecutors from all around the state of colorado, law enforcement from every area around boulder and denver responding to help and give their very all to this vicious attack and to the investigation that will follow. so we are in the very early stages of the investigation. there is much to learn. i really want to stress the incredible cooperation between federal, state, and local partners. it's exactly what we should do in response to this kind of horrific act. having been at the aurora movie theater shooting in the hours after that attack, i can tell you part of what made that response so incredibly important was that we had federal, state, and local partners responding together working as a team, giving their every bit of effort and energy and commitment to ensuring justice for all the victims. that's the kind of response we see in boulder county here today. again, just as back then, federal, state, and local partners working very closely to ensure that the right thing happens with the criminal case and that justice is done for each and every one of the ten victims. the arrest affidavit and arrest warrant were completed and signed at approximately 3:00 a.m. this morning. the offender, whose name has already been provided to you, is being held at a hospital currently. i anticipate that he'll be released from the hospital shortly and then be transported to the boulder county jail. once he's booked into the boulder county jail, we will follow our normal protocol and the affidavit and warrant has been cleared by my office to be released to the community and to the media. so to the media, you can expect that affidavit and warrant to be available for release after he's booked into the jail which, again, at this point i believe will be later today after his medical treatment is completed. i do want to stress that the investigation is really in its early stages, and we're going to work incredibly hard to see it through to completion. that completion is likely more than a year from now. between now and that day when justice is done for all ten of these victims i can promise you we're going to work together at the federal, state, and local levels to give this case our all and to make sure we do justice for these victims. nothing will replace -- nothing can fill the void for the families and their loved ones, but i can promise you that we will hold him accountable. thank you very much for being here, ladies and gentlemen. i will turn it over to u.s. attorney matt kirsch. i really appreciate mr. kirsch and his team being here both last night and today. >> good morning, everyone. i'm matt kirsch, i'm the u.s. attorney for the district of colorado. you've already heard from most of the speakers this morning about how this investigation is proceeding exactly as an investigation of this type should, with full cooperation between federal, state, and local authorities. i'm here to affirm for you on behalf of the federal law enforcement community that that is happening. the federal law enforcement community, the u.s. attorneys including the u.s. attorney's office, the federal bureau of investigation, the atf, and any other resources that are necessary in order to make sure that this investigation is full and complete will be brought to this investigation. i want to close by saying two more things. first of all, on behalf of the federal law enforcement community i want to join in adding that community's sincere condolences and sympathies to the victims, the victims' families, their friends, and to the community at large. we know that the community and all of those people are grieving. we understand that our role, as michael dougherty just explained, is to seek justice for this tragic event. and my pledge to you is that is exactly what the federal law enforcement community will do. with that i'm going to turn it over to special agent in charge of the denver office michael snyder. thank you. >> good morning. as the u.s. attorney said my name is michael schneider, i'm the special agent in charge for the fbi here in colorado. first and foremost i want to offer my condolences on behalf of the fbi to the boulder police departments and the families of the victims of this senseless act of violence. while we mourn the devastating loss, our objective is to conduct a thorough and meticulous investigation. the fbi is involved because of the resources we can bring to bear to support our law enforcement partners and the investigation. at this time we are supporting evidence collection. we are supporting processing the crime scene. we are conducting interviews, and we are providing analytical support as we exploit all the evidence collected. as part of the process we seek the public's help. any information that can be provided to aid our investigation, we ask be provided to the fbi. we have two means of provide that go information. the first is digital media can be provided to fbi.gov/bouldershooting. you can also call the fbi's tip line which is 1-800-call-fbi. we encourage the public to share any information they may have. our objective in this investigation is to conduct a thorough investigation which includes identifying the subject's motives. our effort is ongoing. it's been less than 24 hours since the shooting took place. and it would be premature for us to draw any conclusions at this point in time. i can tell you the community is safe, and we will continue to share updates as we conduct our investigation and can draw conclusions as a result of that investigation. we are grateful to the tremendous partnerships that exist here in this community. we are working very closely with the boulder police department, the boulder county sheriff's office, the colorado bureau of investigation, the u.s. attorney's office, and the district attorney's office. and we can assure the public we will follow every lead as we conduct our investigation and bring justice to the victims. thank you. >> we'll now take a few questions. >> the suspect you have in custody, is that the man you see in the video that was shot from the helicopter yesterday afternoon being escorted out by two officers and with the bloody leg? is that the suspect you are speaking of? >> we'll be releasing a photo of the suspect. >> can you tell us at all anything about the suspect's injuries? in the hospital. >> he suffered a leg wound. it was a through-and-through wound to his leg. the middle section of his leg. >> is that from one of your officers? >> we're not sure at this time. [ inaudible ]. >> not that i know of, sir. >> is
