You dont kill eight people on a bad day, let alone one. So even though the shooting comes at a time when violence against asianamericans is surging and even though of the eight victims, six were of asian descent, seven were women, prosecutors have not yet said whether they will try the murder as hate crimes. Charging one with a hate crime is not just based on ones race, it can also be based on ones sex. We do know that he targeted women specifically in the shooting spree. So i will be very surprised if hes not charged with a hate crime, but i cant speak to what prosecutors will do in that regard. Okay. Unfortunately this week has shown this, that even when multiple murders are committed, when the white guy is the suspect, some people will do anything they can to normalize and minimize his crimes. He was pretty much fed up, had been at the end of his rope and yesterday was a really bad day for him and this is what he did. Joining me now is jeff chang, coauthor of cant stop wont stop a hiphop history. Great book. B nguyen and michelle ya hi li. Im so happy to have you guys here this morning. State representative nguyen, i do want to start with you. I know you were part of that meeting yesterday with President Biden and Vice President harris. Were you satisfied with the federal government response to this insidious hate crime. I recognize the significance of the meeting in and of itself. The president and Vice President came to georgia because of the victories that we handed to them and to talk about the Relief Package but instead because of this horrific crime they chose to cancel their rally, to sit with us for an hour to listen to our concerns, to listen to some of the things that we want to see as we move forward. I will say it is a sparse concept from the previous administration. We have a president and Vice President who are willing to admit that systemic racism, xenophobia and sexism are part of the country. I did feel comforted by the fact that Vice President Kamala Harris was in the room as a woman who is half black and half asian, she understands the intersections of all of those things and what happens when we dont address them. Yeah. I think you made a really good point, that she is the highest ranking asianamerican and, you know, i understand what the black Community Felt seeing her elected. I certainly understand what the asianamerican Community Feels seeing her at the podium bringing a necessary dose of truth. Michelle, i want to ask you, you know, in watching this story all week, i know people have been glued to their Television Screens watching how this has played out, i have noticed that we were really eager to say, oh, this wasnt a hate crime. Why do you think that is . Because i do kind of feel like the media bungled this a bit. There were several Media Failures here. As president of the asianamerican journalist association, why do you think people were so eager to dismiss this as not a hate crime . Part of this is that there is still very few asianamericans in news rooms reporting the news and there are fewer and fewer as you go higher up in the management frame. Asianamericans, especially asianamerican women are very under represented in news leadership. The very people who are reporting the news, shaping the narrative, shaping how the news alerts, the leads and the headlines are shaped, theyre not thinking about centering the story on the women who are actually affected and how the racism is very much linked to sexism, misogyny and hyper sexualization of asianamerican women. This is very much a part of our history. Rather than stopping and asking when the police says during the news conference, well, the suspect said this wasnt racially motivated, he just had a bad day. Hold on, what does that mean . Who gets to decide . What is racially motivated . What does racism have to do with Sex Addiction . Expect them to realize we need to bring a little more skepticism here and think more about the communities that are affected. I cannot agree with you more. I saw that on your instagram you had posted it to get the story right. You and i have spoken about this, a lack of diversity in news rooms that drives this coverage. Imagine if we didnt have that diversity today, theres room to grow. If we didnt have the diversity today we may not even know about this story. Jeff, i want you to take a listen to some absolutely disgusting comments made by Republican House member chip roy. Theres old sayings in texas about find the all the rope in texas and get a tall oak tree. We take justice very seriously and we ought to do that. Round up the bad guys. So now were talking about whether talking about china, Chinese Communist party, whatever phrasing we want to use, i think the Chinese Communist Party Running the country of china, i think theyre the bad guys. Thats the reality of what i tend to refer as the chikosh. Im not going to be ashamed of saying i opposed the chicoms. Jeff, i mean, i think this guy managed to offend almost every community in those ridiculous comments. I want you to take a listen as well to congresswoman grace meng who responded to those comments. I want to go back to something that mr. Roy said earlier. Your president and your party and your colleagues can talk about issues with any other country that you want but you dont have to do it by putting a bulls eye on the back of asianamericans across this country on our grandparents, on our kids. This hearing was to address the hurt and pain of our community, to find solutions and we will not let you take our voice away from us. Ill tell you, jeff, congresswoman grace mengs words were palpable. I felt her pain, her rage. Whats your response to people like chip would i who are woefully ignorant to racism that has plagued this country for so long. What do you say to him . I want to sit him down and give him a crash course in the history of asianamericans in this country. Theyve been killed and massacred. I want him to understand this evokes a lot of memories for us. When folks came out and talked about the way that trump was using the term chinese flu, right . It was because he was evoking a narrative that goes back centuries of asian people as carrying sicknesses, and so the only way that you can actually look at, you know, robert allen longs defense of himself is to look at the asianamerican women that he killed not as human beings with sons, with children, with loved ones but as people who are not people, as folks who are symptoms of his sickness, right . Right. Thats what links the coronavirus sort of violence thats occurring right now in the pandemic to what happened in atlanta on tuesday. Well, you said Something Interesting there, jeff. I want to took back to you, state rep nguyen because, look, im not trying to excuse donald trump for his language and what he said, but i think, you know, if president barack obama had come out and say you know, refer to this group of people as such and it was something offensive, i would think, im not going to do that and this man has clearly lost his mind. So racism preceded trump and so now, you know, as we see these things happen, and we make members of muslim members of the population come out and apologize for everything that ever happened even if they had nothing to do with anything bad, at what point will we get to the space where were asking the maga crowd, come out and apologize for the terror you inflict on this country . I know, i grew up in georgia, i know theres a lot of them in georgia. What are your thoughts . Were talking about language and the use of kung flu virus and the history of it, what i think of is yellow peril, yellow fever, jungle fever, all terms that have been used to describe asian People Living in this country that are also intertwined with sexism. And so when i think about all of these things theyre not new to us, and we know that words reference this. In the past week as ive been speaking out at the aapi and about this horrific tragedy, i have gotten messages for people who want to defend the suspect in custody. I do think our reluctance to admit systemic racism, systemic xenophobia, systemic misogyny is because if you admit it, then people will have to atone for it and we all have to address it. But it benefits the people who choose not to believe it. Yeah. Jeff, i wanted to get into your book because i think hiphop plays such a significant role in merging of communities, understanding each others culture. We are sadly out of time so youll have to come back where we can just talk about your book because i thought it was such a great read. State representative bee nguyen, thank you for joining us. Michelle, i want to say i love the work that youre doing. I love that youre bringing aapi voices to the forefront. If your vote didnt matter, they wouldnt be working so hard to try to stop it so dont let anybody take your voice or your vote. Thats right. Over 250 Voter Suppression bills are pending in 43 states. Thats as of last month according to the Brennan Center for justice. Some of the most egregious efforts to stifle the vote are coming from lawmakers. In texas where more than 2 dozen of gop sponsored has voter rolls and limiting early voting. Theyre not trying very hard to mask their intentions here. Joining me now to discuss la tasha brown, cofounder of black voters matter. Chuck devore, Texas Public Policy Foundation and Texas State Representative jessica gonzalez. Thank you guys for joining me for this conversation. My question is there has been no evidence of voter fraud. The fifth Circuit Court in texas found that the voter i. D. Laws were racially discriminatory. They noted that there were only two convictions of voter impersonation out of 20 million votes cast in the past decade. The chief Law Enforcement officer there whos responsible for prosecuting some of these things on false registration form, thats not enough to change the outcome of an election. His own Attorney General has said theres no mass voter fraud. The verdict seems to be in from every corner this isnt happen. Dan patrick in november offered a Million Dollar reward for evidence in voter fraud. Photo i. D. Is required in the state of texas. There is a reasonable impediment document you can sign if you dont have that. What we are talking about is mailin ballots. With mailin ballots there is no identification. You talk about fraud. We had three elections invalidated because of mailin voter fraud in texas in 2018, including in the city of mission where they had to do the election over again. This is like the city of patterson in new jersey where you just had two City Council Members indicted two week ago for massive mailin ballot fraud in the third biggest city in new jersey last year, and you talk about black votes matter . Black votes matter in paterson, new jersey, where the vast majority of residents are residents of color and they were disenfranchised by Wide Scale Voter Fraud Last year. I imagine youre so concerned about black voters. Let me ask you because donald trump voted by mail. He voted by mail for the third time. He voted in florida by mail in 2019, in march 2020 and again this year. Right. If this is good enough for the gop king, the maga king, why is it not good enough for the people in texas . You have to draw the distinction between mailin voting and absentee voting. What the president did is what the people in the military do. If youre not in your home area during the election period or early volting, then you should be able to vote by mail. Similarly, if youre disabled and its dangerous for you to go to the polls, you should be able to vote by mail. But what were talking about is a unilateral expansion of vote by mail that doesnt have any reasonable safeguards, and that is why you see something on the order of 79 of americans approving of voter i. D. To cast a ballot. That includes close to 70 of Black Americans because they understand that it is so important to have free where are you getting those numbers from . I havent seen that. Its a new rasmussen poll just three days ago. Rasmussen. Okay. All right. Look, jessica, youre there on the ground in texas. Have you seen has there been a problem . It seems like a solution in search of a problem, and i have to tell you the research ive seen does not show a large portion of black voters or people of color supporting legislation that makes it more difficult for the ballot box. What have you seen being a legislator in texas . I mean, there is absolutely no evidence of voter fraud. You know, our indicted Attorney General has spent millions of dollars on a voter integrity unit. Theyve come up with virtually no evidence of voter fraud yet were seeing tons of legislation that has been filed in the texas house that is aimed at creating barriers and trying to solve a problem that simply doesnt exist. We keep asking questions whats the problem and what are we trying to solve . We cant get any answers. Before i bring you in, i want to go back to chuck. This has been such an issue for the Republican Party, okay . So lets assume that the Republican Party is really so worried about this nonexistent voter fraud. Lets assume that thats your intention, that you just want to protect election security. Are you okay with the fact that these these rules that you want to put in place will, in fact, disenfranchise millions of people of color, not only in texas but across the country . So, first of all, i categorically reject your conjecture that somehow the requirement to present identification, government i. D. , is somehow racially difficult for certain members of the United States. I mean, talk about condensencion. Excuse me. Thats why they want to have voter i. D. To go back to representative gonzalez and her contention. We had 13 offices overturned dwleers ago because of wide scale mailin ballot fraud including in the city of mission, texas. That isnt evidence of no fraud. To the contrary, it shows that there is fraud and that the main mechanism for fraud is mailin ballots. And what we saw last year because of covid19 was this multihundred Million Dollar effort to unilaterally change laws, change the Election Code in states using consent decrees, using the courts, bypassing the legislature broke down the safeguards for free and fair voting. These safeguards youre talking about, youre saying this is all about protecting election integrity, but what about the republicans role in selling the big lie . Those are the people that are worried about election integrity. The republicans role in saying the last election wasnt legitimate because their candidate didnt win. Where is the true intention . Wouldnt that be expanding the pathway to the ballot box. You keep throwing out statistics when i just went over that there is not large evidence of voter fraud. There is not enough to proof that so many people voted, you know, illegally that somehow they changed the outcome of the election. I mean, you have to understand how this looks to people of color across the country who are for decades have fought this level of Voter Suppression. Are you saying that the election in paterson, new jersey, the third biggest city in the state wasnt overturned because of voter fraud and that two City Council Members there werent just indicted two weeks ago because of wide scale voter fraud . Thats what were talking about. And i wrote two white papers youre pursuing a Voter Suppression bill in texas. But youre pursuing these bills in texas. Talk to me about whats happening in texas. I cited three jurisdictions in texas who had elections invalidated just three years ago. If theres no voter fraud, why was the election in Mission Texas down in the Rio Grande Valley thrown out . Why did that happen . Because of mailin ballot fraud. Okay. I want to bring you in here. Its a pet peeve when people spit in my face and try to convince me its raining. This is Voter Suppression. You have put a lot of pressure on the private sector and said, hey, you guys are funding and supporting these Voter Suppression bills. Something has got to change. You have been winning those battles. We have seen you make great gains in georgia. Im curious your thoughts on what chuck is saying about this massive voter fraud that only republicans seem to see. Whats your thoughts here . Well, a couple of things. I am glad that chuck said that they care about black voters because they care so much about black voters that theyve targeted on finding ways to disenfranchise black voters. Thats the fundamental about what this is about. The bottom line that the Lieutenant Governor spent 22,000 hours with 16 people using different identity, in addition to that, this is part of a long history in texas. In 1964 during the height of Voting Rights movement and what led to the Voting Rights act of which Linden Johnson who is from texas signed was part of the egregious behavior that was happening in texas, that there were over 100,000 this isnt new. This lie has been recycled from the Voting Rights movement that they actually said in Harris County it was called the knowing zbroe Voter Protection that sent out notices to thousands of black folks in Harris County saying that they had just even been questioned that they would be arrested for voting. So this is a history in the state of texas. They dont have not only do they have not only a voter fraud problem, they have a problem where they have intentionally disenfranchised people to vote and theyre 48th in the nation. If anything, i would expect chuck would take leadership in the millions interested in expanding, then why would we not do everything in our power to provide access to the ballot . Which is why in some of those cities in texas less than 8 of the population are voting. So this is a matter around the demographic shifts in the state where its becoming increasing i will a diverse state and theyre attacking the vote. Yes, hes right. They care about black or brown voters to the extent they can focus on them, the disenfranchised. Chuck, i do want to give you a chance to respond. Well keep this conversation going. Up next, some republicans are saying the quiet part out loud. I want to get chucks reaction to that. Dont go away. Dont go away. Are you packed yet . Our flight is early tomorrow. And its a long flight too. Once we get there, we will need. Buttercup alice loves the scent of gain so much, she wished there was a way to make it last longer. Whats the interest of the arizona rnc here in keeping, say, the out of Precinct Voter ballot disqualification rules on the books . Because it puts us at a competitive disadvantage relative to democrats. Politics is a zero sum game. All right. The attorney for the arizona Republican Party could not have made his intentions any clearer when he defended the arizona voting restrictions before the supreme court. My panel is back with me to discuss. Republicans intensifying campaign against Voting Rights. Chuck, i want to pick up. I want you to respond to latashas points. Out of respect for our viewers. I dont believe you. You say you need more people. The gop has been laser focused on communities of color voting and if youre so concerned about black voters, i have to tell you Voter Suppression is a chief issue. If that is your concern, then why would you pursue this path to narrow the path to the ballot box . If youre concerned about black voters, why are you perpetuating Voter Suppression and not trying to combat Voter Suppression . Thats the key issue that impacts black voters. Your response, sir, please. Well, first of all, what we saw in texas this last year was a record turnout in the state of texas, and latashas concerns, she cited historical cases that go back almost before i was born, 56 years ago. I was citing three years ago in the state of texas where three elections were overturned because of widespread irregularities with mailin ballot fraud. One last thing of note, its fascinating to me from a political standpoint that weve reached this Inflection Point that was perhaps accelerated under President Trump where democrats started to get significantly more white voters, specifically College Educated white voters, republicans started to get more working class americans, including down in the Rio Grande Valley in texas where there was Massive Movement towards the Republican Party in this last election. Does anyone massive . Does anyone think for one second that the shoe would be on the other foot if what we saw significant increases in previously low propensity voters turning out to vote for an american first agenda versus the increasingly elite voters of the democratic party. All right. Clearly this is more about power and politics than it is about race and ethnicity. Donald trump i think bragged about having a golden toilet. Go ahead, la tasha. Go ahead. Its 1 to 2,000 the Lieutenant Governor. They checked the votes of over 100,000 people and it cleatly completely fell apart. In Harris County we would have 24 hour voting that the governor had said we didnt need so that they have not at any rate been committed to showing that theyre providing access on expanding the vote. Its been opposite. In a moment where were seeing now, low voter turnout, the state 48th in the nation, they should being ashamed. They should be ashamed instead of doing everything in their power to expand access to ballot to now on top of that really do these laws and try to propose these laws to restrict access to ballot. Jessica, let me ask you. Chuck, you know, is saying a lot of things here about this massive voter fraud, again, that nobodys been able to see. Ill ask you again, jessica. The Lieutenant Governor dan patrick offered 1 million. With a Million Dollar i could buy the Republican Party some integrity. Nobodys saying yes this is all of this massive voter fraud enough to overturn the election. Again, i will ask you, are there any concerns from your perspective as a texas State Legislator that you have seen voter fraud is such a huge issue that we would be willing to introduce Voter Suppression legislation . Absolutely not. I mean, weve had, you know, in our committee hearings, weve had the secretary of States Office say that the election this last cycle were secure and they were safe so whats the problem . I dont understand why these changes need to be made if the secretary of States Office has said themselves that it was smooth, it was secure. So theyre just trying to instill fear in voters by trying to codify a false narrative and instill fear in voters so they dont turn out to vote. Texas, we all know texas has a history of discrimination. Hence why we were under purview 6 since its inception and currently is not because the law got overturned. That doesnt mean the bad actors dont exist still. And let me just point out that these bills, in texas it will bar counties from sending Absentee Ballot forms to people who didnt ask for them. It will limit a countys authority to expand voting hours. It will require faster purges of voter roles. In georgia theyve made it illegal that if someone is standing in line, you cannot give them food or water for them to keep standing in line. These are things that historically have been used to disenfranchise voters and i know there was a lot of effort here to debunk that, unfortunately our lived experience says otherwise. I will thank you, Latasha Brown for the work you are doing and congratulations on you on beating back soft of the voter bills. Chuck and jessica, thank you both. Jessica, id love to have you back on the show sometime. Thank you all for having a very spirited discussion. Trying to keep up with all of the news is like trying to catch confetti and understanding all of it is a task of its own. Lets try to take some of it and make it make sense. This weeks question is coming to you from trinidad, colorado. Hi, tiffany. Im Megan Thompson from trinidad, colorado. What i want to know is about congress. Are there any laws to keep the congress from lying to us all the time . I need to know. Megan, you are speaking to my soul, sister, for this one. Thank you so much for that amazing question. There arent laws that can Keep Congress or bad actors in the media from lying to you because we have something called the First Amendment which prohibits laws that restrict the Freedom Of Speech and unfortunately that even applies to lies. As frustrating as it can be to have politicians or Media Operatives blatantly lie on tv day after day like you just saw in our last segment, if we started criminalizing speech, lets just say a lot of folks would be in jail along with almost all the politicians and some of us would find out what happens when keeping it real goes wrong. So careful what you say on social media, am i right . But its a tradeoff, right . Freedom of speech is pretty much sacred in this country which is why i can come on tv every week and tell you how i really feel it. Means we have to endure things like this parading around pretending to be news. Theres no evidence that White Supremacists were responsible for what happened on january 6th. Thats a law. Theres also no evidence this was a, quote, armed insurrection. Theyre coming in from everywhere. Theyre dropping them off and pouring into our country. Its a disgrace. Theyre going to destroy our country if they dont do something about it . In the state of michigan theyre moving in to investigate the Software Glitch called dominion that actually changed thousands of votes from trump to biden. They caught it. And the president s lawyers alleging that american votes in a president ial election are actually counted in a foreign country. Theyre changing the country on the basis of those lies. They repeat them until people believe them and then they act. I mean, ah. Youve got to love it when people like Tucker Carlson and his thirsty squad telling themselves and speaking of tucker. One way to hold folks in the Media Accountable is to sue them for defamation because of the Freedom Of Speech. It does not protect lies that hurt someones reputation or livelihood, but even then they have a trick. Take Tucker Carlson there. He got sued in December 2019 for defamation but the case was ultimately dismissed. Not because carlson lied but because he couldnt be expected to tell the truth. Seriously, you guys. Foxs lawyers argued and the judge actually agreed that, quote, given mr. Carlsons reputation, any reasonable viewer arrives with an appropriate amount of skepticism about the statement he makes and the general tenor of the show should inform a viewer that carlson is not stating actual facts about the topics he discusses. Yeah. Dont take me seriously was seriously his defense. Hes defending the indefensible which would be all well and good if what he said werent the total and complete opposite of reality. And the kind of thing that, i dont know, inspires people to try to violently overthrow the government, never forget january 6th. So, look, megan, there may not be laws to protect us from a lack of actual facts in the media, but we can certainly protect ourselves by being smart media consumers. This is something i really care about and have been advocating for a long time. That means thinking before you share on social and looking for second and third sources of information. It means reading reputable newspapers, listening to podcasts and confirming what you hear there. Try to broaden your news diets. Good morning, and welcome back to the Cross Connection. In just a couple of hour, a rally is set to begin in atlanta to protest the violence against asianamericans. This is one day after President Biden invites or Vice President harris, excuse me, spoke forcefully against a yearlong surge of hate crimes after the shootings this week that left eight people dead, six of them of asian descent. Vice president harris made sure to acknowledge that racism, sexism and xenophobia, she lay the blame on a much more recent phenomenon. The last year weve had people in positions of Incredible Power Scapegoating asianamericans, people with the biggest pulpits spreading this kind of hate. Ultimately, this is about who we are as a nation. Joining me now, i am so grateful to say my dear friend and host of the reid out msnbcs joy reid. Thank you so much for getting up and joining me on a saturday after all week, and i am glad to have this conversation. I will only keep 37 of the group chat public here as we talk about some of these Trending Topics. I first want to just talk about this incredibly sad situation happening in georgia, and really all over the country with the violence against our friends in the Asian American community. Your show the reid out has done its part to keep it at the forefront and youve kept Diverse Voices at the forefront. I want to play a Chip Roy Sound Bite for you so you can hear what he said and get your reaction to it. We believe in justice, right . Theres an old saying in texas find all of the rope in texas and get a tall oak tree. You know, we take justice very seriously and we ought to do that. Round up the bad guys. I mean, homeboy happened to offend every community he possibly could in that sound bite. Im disgusted by those comments and by him. What are your thoughts . First of all, a Sister Privilege and say i havent had a chance to congratulate you on air for the Cross Connection, normally im prone in my bed watching, but i am watching. I watch velshi and then i watch you and sundays i watch jonathan, but always in bed. Thank you. I am proud to be here and im proud of you and love the show. Thank you. Yeah. Of course, no, its been an interesting week because i think weve gotten a lot of clarity, right . One thing that donald trump has to get credit for is hes created a lot of clarity and theres no more obfuscation about whether or not republicans want to be compassionate conservatives one minute or they want to be fiscal conservatives. All of that has been wiped away. So the core or the id is now out and what chip roy did is he spoke the id. He is from texas. Hes from a state that is already reaching the Critical Mass of diversity that the whole country is going to reach and the reaction in your previous interview talking about Voter Suppression, what the reaction has been is we have to suppress these emerging communities. We cant let them vote. We cant let them gain power and we have to stop there from being another barack obama, but asianamericans, theyre often left out about the conversation about racism. Theyre just left out even though one of the biggest mass lynchings in u. S. History was against asians in the 1870s when a rumor sparked that chinese immigrants were killing white folks in the 1870s. In a mass, 500 white men showed up in chinatown in california, Old Chinatown and just started hanging and shooting and killing chinese immigrants. That history of lynching including chinese people, it includes asian people. Yeah. It includes japaneseamerican internment. So were having this whole broad conversation about racism and hate that i think is because donald trump made everything that was covert overt and yeah. I think what chip roy said is repulsive. He didnt apologize for it and he doubled down and he said if you dont like it, too bad, because i said it. Its not surprising, honestly, joy. Im curious for you i know in my inbox and timeliness, theres a lot of horizontal hate. Dont include asianamericans and theyre not people of color and they dont stand with black people. I have to say its not true. Ive worked with so many people in the Asian American community who are combatting antiblack sentiment who are standing in solidarity with black lives matter. What do you say to people that there cannot be space in your heart to care about this issue in the community. Part of my kind of sort of you know, secret sauce that ive had is born of theft, a former a. M. Joy producer that you know very well, ky ma who is one of our producers on the reid out has produced the segments that weve done on the massacre the atlanta massacre. She and i have talked about i know you know her, as well, about this Intersectional Conversation because there is a history of Intraethnic Combativeness between various communities including several parts of the Asian American community and parts of the africanamerican community. You can go all of the way back to the sort of rodney king era when you had these incidents between grocers of korean descent and africanamericans. You had that in new york. You had this sort of tension between brown and black communities and this has happened all throughout history because on. Right. The easiest way to keep people of color from massing together to demand rights as a collective is to keep them fighting and the way america has worked has kept us fighting really, really well and theyve done a good job at keeping us at each other instead of the collective and that has changed a lot. Theres a lot of Intersectional Conversation thats happened between black and asian folks and its partly because of this rise in violence. I first heard about the spark of asianamerican violence because questlove was posting about it. Yeah. Questlove from the roots, he was posting about it and he was saying weve got to have this conversation. You know, reverend al sharpton, My Big Brother Reverend Al and fellow host on msnbc has talked a lot about the intersectional, but we have to remember that whatever sideways conversations are happening about whether weve not been proper allies in the past, the Bigger Picture is that White Supremacy unites us because its targeting all of us. Absolutely. And we have to Work Together and i think that youve seen a lot more intersectionality because we get what the real villain is, the real villain is White Supremacy and violence. I dont know anybody who says i dont rock out with asianamericans, i know hes watching, questlove, and thank him for bringing up these issues in the Aapi Community and i want to Something Else that happened this week. Senator rand pauls, change with dr. Fauci which was asinine and interesting at the same time. Take a look. Youve had the vaccine and wearing two masks. Isnt it theater . Here we go with the theater. Lets get to the facts. When you talk about reinfection and you dont keep in the concept of variance, thats an entirely different ball game. Thats a good reason for a mask. You know, i got my fauci ouchy this week and i was tired after my first shot and other than that i feel fine. What is the deal with rand paul constantly introducing these completely ignorant statements. I honestly think hes a little jealous. He has a little beef with fauci because hes a doctor and fauci gets to sit at The Cool Kids table and rand paul remains unliked by most american, but what do you think . It scares me that people let rand paul operate on their eyes. It frightens me that they let him touch them in any medical way. His dad gave him raw milk as a child, baubie maybe thats his thing. He is an antiscience curmudgeon. He wants to be free to spread covid. He had covid and showed up in the gym, in the capitol gym and felt that he should be able to be unmasked and spread it. There is an attitude on the right of not saying we dont care that covid is real and we dont believe its real, if its real we should be able to spread it. Right. Theres almost a Christopher Columbus era attituded for covid. If i got Covid You Get covid. If i got covid im coming in your store and cough on you. If you dont like it you better take off your mask and take it. Theres this attitude that they feel they have the right to spread covid or theyre enthusiastic about spreading covid. I dont get it. I dont understand it. If thats libertarianism. Its supposed to be freedom to smoke weed, if thats libertarianism, you will chase everybody else in the community. In the community we call it a hater. If you have covid and youre a hater and, sshlly a murderer, as well. I was super impressed and you had California Governor Gavin Newsom on and those who missed it, take a look at what happened. If Dianne Feinstein were to retire will you nominate an africanamerican woman to restore the seat that Kamala Harris is no longer in the United States senate and do you have a name in mind . Yes or no. We have multiple names in mind and the answer is yes. Joy, i know those producers in your ear are, like, we have to go and its a whereupon. Im so happy you got that question in i knew you wanted to ask a followup, who are the names, governor, tell us dianne said she will serve out her term. Well see what happens. I think shes 86 now, but is there someone that you think in california who he might tap to put a black woman back in the senate . So i think karen bass and barbara lee, their names immediately come up and theyre names top of mind for who might get those seats and thats always a challenge because of the narrow margin that the democrats have in the house and theyve been very much, like, dont touch any of our members because the margins are so narrow and theres london breed. Weve only had a dozen black senators and only two black women. When one of them was elevated to president of the senate, Vice President Kamala Harris, it did leave a void there and there was a Long Time Coming to have a latino senator in california for gods sakes and latinos are the majority and theyve never had a senator which issen sane and thats good that that happened, but the governor understands that the next logical step is to then replace that Kamala Harris presence in the United States senate. I needed to get that question in United States bat it was something i was wondering about and the producer was literally, like, wrap theyll be saying that to me in a minute. We talk about black women being in the senate and black women changed the dynamics and i want to play newly minted martha fudge and i want to play how she greeted everybody this week. Good afternoon. Good afternoon. Oh, thank you. [ laughter ] i was wondering if i was in this room by myself. Good afternoon. I was waiting for her to say turn to your neighbor and say god is good. She brings a culture to it. Before i let you go, because theyral fled my ear, joy, and they want me to wrap. You and i talked about this in the group chat and im keeping this private in the group chat. It may be saturday, but i want to take you to church because Kirk Franklin was caught in an expletivefilled before i put my foot in your [ bleep ] i mean, i do want to know that kirk frank lynn has since publicly apologized for this exchanges we hear his son and there are probably issues there that we dont have time to get into in this segment, joy, i think were on different sides of this. I felt a little uncomfortable with the exchange and our friend djamel tweeted ive been cursed out In The Name Of Jesus and my mom has gathered me a few times with colorful language and youre a mother of three grown children and what was your take on the Kirk Franklin exchange . My mother was 53, little fill on mena, and she was tiny and little and we did not play with disrespect. I give grace to Kirk Franklin because his son and he, tamron hall did an interview with him and talked about he talked about some of the issues that theyve had around disrespect, right . And there is something that black parents are just really not going to sit for is disrespect. So we dont really know the full of that conversation so i as a parent, as well have a hard time judging him completely and yes, i had a problem with it public. The son made it public and the son didnt have to do that either and they have issues they need to work on internally. A black woman says good morning and good afternoon and you dont respond and a black dad get disrespected. So were going to make sure that we have to understand the cultural kind of issues that are involved here and i just want to say one last thing before i let you go, tiffany because i didnt say it at the top and i think that i should. Probably the worst thing that happened this week was not Kirk Franklin cussing out his adult 35yearold son and they need to deal with their issues. The worst thing that happened was a sheriff, a Law Enforcement officer of the United States saying that a spree killer had a bad day because he had a Sex Addiction and seeming to empathize with him when he slaughtered eight women, most of them asian. We need to recognize its the violence against those bodies that is the outrage. Kirk franklin was being a parent in whatever way he was being a parent they will work that out internally and we need to work on this violence and we need to know a bad day is what those eight families had when they lost their loved ones. It shows we are so quick to sympathize and empathize with people who perpetuate this kind of violent white terrorism that were seeing in the country. So thank you for keeping us on topic, joy. I cannot thank you enough. I would not sit in this seat were it not for you so thank you for getting up on a saturday. You are killing it in your prime time slot making a weekend visit today so thank you, thank you so much for doing this. Youll have to come back. I didnt want to panel you. We cant panel joy reid. I am way over. They are yelling. We have to go. Wrap, wrap, wrap i can relate, honey i can relate thank you so much, joy. The Biden Administration got five on it, as in they fired five people for prior marijuana use and that was after saying that wouldnt happen. Joining me now, al harrington, former nba player and ceo of viola Cannabis Brands and my friend, trumain lee and msnbc correspondent and new York Assembly woman crystal People Stokes and the Majority Leader of the new york state assembly. Very happy to have all of you guys with me and this is one of my favorite topics to talk about as we dismantle this war on drugs in this moment. State rep, ill start with you because what do you make of this biden reversal . People have lost their jobs because of prior use. Its not like they were walking in the halls of the white house blazing. This is something that they did prior. What do you make of it and would you hire somebody who previously or currently uses Recreational Marijuana . Well, i think thats inherently unfair particularly in washington where it is a legal product. I think if an employer has a requirement that their employees not use that product much like they have a requirement that you dont use their product, alcohol, while youre working, that would be fair, but for someone to lose their job for something that they did in the past i dont think is fair at all. You wouldnt smoke on the job, but what you do on your recreational adult time is your time. We dont fire people for having a glass of wine when they get home and there are studies that alcohol is sometimes more dangerous than marijuana. Trumain, i want to turn to you on this. You and i talked about this. Cities are facing deficits particularly around covid that have devastated different municipalities economy and you did this great story about chicago potentially adopting legislation that would take the tax from marijuana and use it to fund a reparation program. Tell me about that. Thats right. In evanston, illinois, that is the first city to use Marijuana Tax to Fund Recreation program. They would take 3 of the sales of Recreational Marijuana and divert it to home Access Programs and let folks get access to homes that is wealth and a bunch of other shenanigans for generations. So theyre hoping Recreational Marijuana could help shrink the gap and in illinois which recently passed marijuana legalization, black folks were seven times more likely to be arrested, right . And we know historically that black folks have been criminalized in our very beings and drugs were a quick means to criminalize us. We know the war on drugs was actually a war on black people and while evanston, illinois is trying to make amends and there are 321,000 marijuana jobs. 321,000. Each year, especially last year, 18. 3 million in sales and 1. 2 to 1. 4 of Marijuana Facilities legally owned were of black people. So it was this convoluted tangle with black folks and criminalization of marijuana, but evanston is trying to make amends and make some progress. Let me turn to you because trumain gave us really important data about the disproportionate number of people that have benefited from the legal weed trade. We have seen the number of black people criminalized remains high, pardon the pun and the people benefitting from this remain low. You have bucked that trend and i know you are very focussed that making sure that a pipeline for black people to benefit from this multibilliondollar mark has expanded. Tell us what youre doing. For us, were doing a bunch of things. We have some incubator programs. We also, you know, bring other brands, you know, underneath our umbrella and give them access to our license to be able to work in the states where theyve been able to build brands. To your point, its just we have been disproportionately affected and weve been left out of this process. A lot of Times Social Equity programs are always thought about after the fact and after they allow these companies who set up shop and grab a majority of the marketplace and then they say, okay, well give people of color an opportunity ask you know, my feeling on that is its impossible for us to win and its like giving the lakers a 20point lead and then saying go out and play. Its tough. For our company we focus on educating, uplifting and empowering people from our community and trying to give them the opportunity to participate from an Ownership Level in the cannabis space. Yeah. And i think what youre doing is great, particularly as we talk about criminal justice issues. Majority leader, i want to come back to you. In new york this issue is at an impasse, people are concerned what if people are driving under the influence of marijuana. I dont think ive heard legislation about closing all of the bars in new york, but ill ask you specifically about the taxing, right . Because this is a big issue when people you can take marijuana and it can fund these things, but then if you keep it 100, if you tax legal american too much would that keep the black market in business . According to Moodys Investor Service the black market is at 40 billion nationwide. So how do you strike that balance of taxing this and funding the programs and also making sure that people are streamlining their dollars in a legal resource . Well, i think you have to be mindful of taxes and theres some debate on that in new york, but hopefully my bills tax level will prevail because i think youre right. If taxes are too high you wont have any impact on creating or eliminating that underground market. Were looking to use our tax dollars in new york specifically to invest in the lives of the people who have suffered from mass incarceration. Their lives, their childrens lives and their families in more than one way. One percentage goes to Community Investment and the other is a percentage of a goal to have a certain number of equity businesses at the start as opposed to at the end. I want to play some sound from senator widen, schumer and booker talking about the failed war on drugs. Trumain, ill come to you after this. Take a listen. It is long past time to address the harms of the failed war on drugs. We are here to talk about a very serious subject which is the decriminalization of marijuana, to take it off the federal list that makes it as serious a drug as heroin or cocaine. Its that ridiculous and for decades young men who were arrested with a small amount of marijuana in their pockets served Lock Prison Terms and then they had a Felony Record and could never make themselves right. Thats one, making sure that we expunge records. Dont talk about free adult use of marijuana without talking about expunging records. Number two, the tax money, this is going to be a Multibillion Business because tax receipts should be reinvested in those communities. Trumain, you just heard these three lawmakers and senator cory booker has been a champion of this issue for a long time even before it was popular. So what do you think if we decriminalize marijuana at the federal level and what impact do you think that will have on Marijuana Users and policymakers across the country . Well, i think it depends and its important the framing here that a lot of these current Marijuana Laws go back to the jim crow era where you had to criminalize black people to push us far into slavery as they could. So these Marijuana Laws have been another means to suppress black people. As i mentioned before. On the state level we know politics matter and we also see a place like colorado among the first to legalize marijuana that arrested black people for marijuana was still higher than that for whites and they just called It Public Consumption or disorderly conduct, right . Regardless of what the federal government does. On the state level we know that as long as theyre going to be using marijuana as a political cudgel then we will see the same results. This is a great first step to rectify what has been framing us and also in the states that legalize marijuana, if you have a Felony Conviction you cannot get in the business and work in a dispensary and we know black black folks are more likely to have these felonies because of the way were policed. Youll have to come back because i have more questions on your business and this is something that well have continuously on the Cross Connection. I want to invite you back on the show trumain lee and Crystal Stokes thank you very much for bringing clarity to the conversation. Coming up, my History Lesson for a particular Talk Show Host. Girl, bye. Thats what i said. I just dont always have the energy to brake out my ph. D on White Supremacy and educate the woefully ignorant and thats essentially what Sharon Osbourne demanded on a recent episode of the talk. Heres her remarks about meghan markle. I am asking you, again and ive been asking you during the break and dont try and cry because if anybody should be crying it should be me. This is the situation. Yeah. You tell me where you have heard him say, educate me. Tell me when you have heard him say racist things. Educate me tell me it was a dont cry part for me, and yes, i read your apology, sharon, but your words are indicative of a bigger problem. The notion that in the moment we have to maintain our composure and sympathize and empathize with your anger masked by white tears while people like you summarily dismiss our pain. Its a recurring thought line in the intersection of race and gender which begs the question aint i a woman . Even when Sojourner Truth posed this question more than a century ago at the 1851 Womens Rights Convention she was not met with welcoming arms from her white counterparts among the suffragettes. Far from it, in fact. They only wanted her to advocate as white women to vote and definitely not for the general lbery of all people. In pack, suffragist Katie Stanton was a Vocal Adversary of the 15th Amendment to the constitution which barred the states from denying black men the right to vote. For all intents and purposes 1920 is when white women got the right to vote, not us. So isnt it funny how history is repetitive . Here we sit today debating Voting Rights for people of color and enduring Violent Attacks rooted in racism and navigating the precarious space of one white womans complicit to White Supremacy. If only we had tried to warn you about this a million times before, and this is clearly not an isolated incident since cbs has put the talk on hiatus amid accusations of racism by the Talk Show Host which she, of course, has denied. A message to Sharon Osbourne. After this read, you should go read because there are numerous books on how your ancestors colonized raped and pillaged many parts of this. Right now there are 80 or so migrants in this shelter and some have been waiting for asylum for a year and they tell me they feel like theyre in immigration limbo. Imagine raising your kids in a shelter for more than a year just for a wait at a better life. Thousands of migrants have newly arrived at the border in recent weeks many of them are unaccompanied minors. There were 4,500 children in Border Patrol custody as of thursday and many of them crowded into facilities that were never meant to house children amid concerns of conditions in those facilities, Alejandro Mayorkas toured a facility on friday with a Bipartisan Group of senators, but the administration has not allowed reporters into these facilities. Joining me now to discuss is paola ramos and Congressman Chuy Garcia from illinois and vice chair of the congressional caucus. Paola, i am so taken by the reporting that youre doing on the border and this situation is so incredibly heartbreaking and its interesting that we can comprehend these things in the masses, right . When i say a number, there are over 4,500 children being housed there, some people hear that and they think how terrible and they go right back to having their breakfast on saturday morning, but when you tell the story of one individual who is a child, who left their home and walked thousands of miles trying to get to the southern border, when you tell that persons story it resonates. Tell me what are some of the compelling stories youve heard at the border. Ill tell you, tiffany, that the line that i keep hearing at the border is that there is obviously a lot of desperation and also a lot of confusion and lets understand why, right . Because if youre an Asylum Seeker at the u. S. Mexico border this is what youre hearing. Youre hearing the United States tell you, were a country of immigrants and the border is closed to Asylum Seekers. You are hearing that unaccompanied minors are welcome in our country, but not their parents and then youre Hearing Something thats very troubling which is the Biden Administration saying wait do not come yet. Wait. What we all have to understand is there is no waiting. Many migrants and many Asylum Seekers and many of the children that youre showing right now on the screen cannot wait because they are desperately fleeing their home countries because of the violence, the poverty and the Gang Violence and the homophobia and theyre fleeing Gang Violence at the u. S. Mexico border because theyre stuck. In those situations we simply have to recognize that until this country completely regrants everyone their right to claim asylum inside of the United States lives will be lost and desperation will continue to force people to migrate north and at the end of the day thats just the reality. Its so heartbreaking. You see the image on the screen of people sleeping in tents while were dealing with a global pandemic. I cannot imagine what that must be like from the perspective of a child. I mean, its just incredibly heartbreaking. Yeah. Its just heartbreaking. So congressman, let me ask you, House Minority leader and trump apologist Kevin Mccarthy has asserted without evidence why we have to be so concerned with whats happening at the border is because there are terrorist people on the Terrorist Watch List trying to cross into the border. You know, its interesting that no intel agency has really said that this is a huge issue right now. There have been isolated incidents that happened over the years. From a policy perspective, what can be done about granting these people asylum and housing these children. There are people as young as 13 years old at the border traumatized because theyve been separated from their parent, grandparents and dont have a Single Family member. What can be done from a federal governments perspective. Thank you for the invitation, tiffany. Ive been to the matamoros asylum camp. Ive been in New Mexico In Detention Facilities in mcallen, texas, as well and ive been to Central America and it is very important that aside from the rhetoric of mr. Mccarthy and the company that we remember that this is the result of joe biden inheriting a dismantled and gutted Immigration System that is not established to deal with safely processing children and assign the applications and giving people the opportunity and i am encouraged that he has taken steps to put in place those systems that will give people the opportunity to be heard, that will be treated with more dignity and have an orderly processing of these cases. I am very encouraged by the announcements that he has made through Executive Orders and also through legislation as in his bill he proposes a 4 billion initiative to address the root causes of why people are fleeing the northern triangle in Central America in particular. Yeah. That is the real solution, but for now, its really important that we not lose sight, that my god, these are children for the most part that were talking about and many moms and families who have relatives in the u. S. And they simply are begging for the opportunity to go before a judge to be represented and to lay out the merits of the case. Its Heart Wrenching especially for someone who crossed the border at the age of 9 in 1965. I see their reality through those lenses. What if my situation had not been what it was and what if i had been there with my mother and my siblings in one of those camps . Yeah. You know, its hard to make this point on people. We see these little bodies there and these children and i appreciate you bringing up the root cause. They dont want to leave their homes. They have no choice. So when you look at these children trying to get into the country, you know, theres a reason behind it. So, paola, im mostly concerned about the children. You visited the facility just like the congressman. Whats happening . Are these children safe . Are they doing any kind of Digital Learning . Imagine if they could after the trauma they just endured. Are there covid restrictions in place . Take us inside the facility and tell us what youve seen. I actually have not been inside the facilities, but i think thats one of the problem. More press should be allowed in the facilities in the moment and that is the role that we have to have is accountability. I will say this. With the Biden Administration is confronting is a very complex situation because they are trying to inject humanity and compassion and empathy in a system that was never built that way. Theres a reason why these Detention Centers have been called ice boxes and doghouses not just under trump, but under president obama. The bottom line that we should all agree on if a child is knocking on your door you open the door and you try to put them with their relatives and its important for all of us to begin to account that 80 of the unaccompanied minors who are coming to this country have relatives in the United States, more than 80 and they deserve to be with the people that they love and that is the bottom line that everybody should be operating from. Yeah. These these children out of these facilities and into a home if for people watching at home and seeing the children, the parents of these kids love their children just like you love their children and imagine what desperate circumstances they must be facing to have their children show up at the Border Unaccompanied and thank you for bringing the humanity to this, paola ramos and same to you, congressman, jesus, and chuy garcia you have to come back because we stay on top of this story. Dont go anywhere, up next, the teenager who is making a difference after making history on capitol hill this week, shes up next when we come back. E com. I am here before you today representing the hundreds of thousands of kids just like me who are supported and loved by their family, friends and communities across the country. As a High School Sophomore im starting to look at colleges and all i can think about is this, less than half of the states in our country provide equal protection for me under the law. This is the United States of america, the country that i love. Every young person, every person regardless of who they are or who they love, should be able to be excited about their future. I have big goals for mine. This week 16yearold Stella Keating was widely praised after testifying before congress in support of the equality act which would amend federal laws and ensure protections for lgbtq americans for employment, education, housing and other areas. Stella is the first transgender teenager to testify before the senate and hopes to continue her fight for equality. With her movement, the gender pool project. Joining me to discuss her powerful testimony before congress is the wonderful Stella Keating. Stella, i am so happy to have you with me today and i am so proud that you were able to hold your composure testifying before the senate. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. I want you to inform our viewers, what is the gender cool project. The gender cool project started out as a Storytelling Campaign telling what transgender youth are not what we are and it ended up becoming a movement, and the after we launched in 2018 the corporate world found us and they came to us and told us, like, we want to become places where you want to work and how can we become places that you can and feel safe, too. And so now weve been going across the country and speaking to a bunch of different Corporate Partners to create a better environment for the future nextgen workforce. Thats so incredibly awesome, and i hope people will continue to support your work. Im curious, given everything that youre facing and the things that youre trying to change about this country, you know, youre a gzer and theres a lot of conversation about genz. Do you anticipate that you will continue to face discrimination for the rest of your life or do you think that the genz generation will forever change how we look at each other and our differences and our commonality . I think we will change the future for the better and i think we already are. Three years ago i helped my mayor start the Mayors Youth Commission in my hometown dakoma called the mayor mission of dakoma and we thought a handful of kids would sign up and over 125 did. Wow. Were helping our community through education campaigns and on climate climate culture and diversity and inclusion which just shows how ready genz is to me. Its very impressive and i am so happy that you shared your story. I think your testimony has inspired so many people, and i know at a time when we feel so hopeless you made me feel hope. I want to point out that some lawmakers that you may unseat one day, we shall see, has said that the equality act would threaten girls the right to compete in athletics, yet legislators across the country have been unable to cite any examples of such problems caused by this. I know you want to run for office one day. What office would you run for . Your first time out there, what would you run for . All of them. My mayor wants me to run for city council when im 18, and shes told me that many times, and i would be honored to be in the role to have the role of senator one day and i think my big goal is president. Thats so awesome, and i just ask you please, one favor, when you announce, please do it on this show. Wed love to make some news. Thank you so much, Stella Keating and i encourage everyone to watch her full testimony because it was very touching. Thank you so much for joining us on this saturday morning. Your parents did an awesome job with you. Thank them for letting you come on. Thank you for watching and ill be back at 10 00 a. M.
