Republican United States Senate Continues to spew. Ahead, well hear more of the testimony from the police who were defending the capitol from Trump Rioters on january 6th. Plus, tiger woods is said to be awake, responsive and recovering after crashing his car and undergoing Emergency Surgery. Doctors say the injuries to his legs are severe, but are they Career Ending . Well also update you on the race to vaccinate the country as Vaccine Makers say more doses are on the way. And republicans dig in on a few of President Bidens Cabinet Nominees. Senator john cornyn says President Biden needs to big someone to who not bashed people on both sides of the aisle. Interesting. Irony. Its a good point to make. Very long time. Definitely should not happen. John cornyn supported a guy for do we have to state this . For well over four years that promoted the most damaging Conspiracy Theories i would say in never said a word. Perhaps in the history of the United States, in modern american history. If you take Donald Trumps Conspiracy Theories about covid and add to that donald trump Conspiracy Theories about a widespread voter fraud, something that all of his federal judge appointees said just wasnt true, something the United States Supreme Court said wasnt true and john cornyn wasnt upset about that, i guess. Its okay if the president of the United States spreads those wild Conspiracy Theories, undermines americans faiths in democracy, more than Vladimir Putins lies about this country could ever do and sits back quietly and smiles while he does it. You take what john cornyn has said, you look, of course, at what ron johnson has said. We know now why ron johnsons biggest newspaper in ron johnsons state said, willie, the man should resign. What a disgrace. What a disgrace to the United States senate. What a disgrace to the state of wisconsin. Theyre used to that, of course. Its Joe Mccarthys old home state. And what a disgrace to the United States senate that he just keeps lying. This would be this is kind of like i wont mention any names, but there were some people on tv shows that were 9 11 truthers. This is what ron johnson is doing. Actually its probably even more devastating because again liars like ron johnson have undermined americans faith in democracy. In our most precious democratic institutions. And he keeps doing it. He did it yesterday. The clips we played coming in were from a Radio Interview where he denied it was an armed insurrection despite everything we know and have learned from what happened that day. Yesterday, though, he sat in that room with the former chief of Capitol Police and the former sergeant at arms of the house and the senate, and was lecturing them about provocateurs, people not Trump Supporters who infiltrated an otherwise peaceful demonstration. He said it with a straight face. Does he believe it . Is he that corrupt that he believes it . Or is he more corrupt that he doesnt believe it and hes still willing to spew that inside that room yesterday . Unbelievable. That a sitting senate, joe, would continue after he knows what happened, continue to push this lie. Well, and lets just remind everybody of that conversation Kevin Mccarthy had with donald trump while the insurrection, while the sedition that joj hawley and ted cruz helped begin, were coconspirators along with donald trump, Kevin Mccarthy called donald trump who was gleefully watching the insurrection on his White House Television sets and mccarthy begged donald trump to call off his terrorists. Trump said back to mccarthy, he said, thats antifa. Thats not those arent my supporters despite, of course, the fact they were all carrying trump flags and all had trump hats. And mccarthy yelled back at him, who the blank do you think you are talking to . These are your people. Which donald trump then responded, well, kevin, i guess theyre more upset about the Election Loss than you are. Proving again that donald trump knew that was his supporters that were committing insurrection against the United States of america. And so, the fact that even Kevin Mccarthy is shouting down donald trump, begging him to call off the Terrorist Attack and trump refuses for an additional two hours, i mean, willie, that shows that not only did Kevin Mccarthy know this but Mitch Mcconnell knew this and ron johnson knew this and even knowing the truth ron johnson decides hes going to keep lying about the worst attack on american democracy from the inside in 240 years of this great republicans history. Its truly disgraceful. You used the right word earlier, its disgraceful. Disgraceful they perpetuated a lie before the election. Lying about the attack on january 6th and yet many of them continue to do it. And as you say, ka road our democracy. Nothing short of that. Theyre Kor Rodding Our Democracy by doing that. Lets talk about what was said inside that room yesterday. What happened to pierce through these lies. Top officials responsible for securing the capitol on the day of january 6th testified before congress yesterday. They blamed poor intelligence for the massive security failure. Communications breakdown. And they blamed one another. We heard from the head of the Dc Metro Police and three others who since have resigned the former house and Senate Sergeant at arms and head of the Capitol Police at the time. Here is Karnisha Mendoza and sund explaining what they faced that day. At some point my right arm was wedged between rioters and the railing along the wall. A sergeant pulled my right arm free and had he not im certain it would have been broken. I received chemical burns to my face that still have not healed to this day. I witnessed officers being knocked to the ground and hit with various objects that were thrown by rioters. Of multitude of events i worked in my nearly 19 year career of the department this was by far the worst of the worst. We planned for increased level of violence at the capitol and some participants may be armed. What we got was a Military Style coordinated assault. I witnessed insurgents Beating Police officers with fists, pipes, sticks, bats metal barricades and flag poles. These criminals came prepared for war. These people came specifically with equipment. You bring Climbing Gear to a demonstration. Youre bringing explosives, chemical spray they were planning on our agency not being at full strength and then also the fact that we were dealing with two pipe bombs specifically set right off the edge of our perimeter to what i suspect draw resources away. I think there was a significant coordination with this attack. It was first reported by the Washington Post that an fbi office in virginia warned a day before the attack that extremists were traveling to washington to war, and that the intel was shared with Capitol Police, but the Security Officials who testified yesterday said they didnt see it. I actually just in the last 24 hours was informed by the department that they actually had received that report. It was received by what we call its one of our sworn members thats assigned to the joint Terrorism Task force, which is a task force with the fbi. They received it the evening of the 5th, reviewed it and then forwarded over to an official at the Intelligence Division over at Capitol Police headquarters. So you hadnt seen it yourself . No maam. Mr. Stenger, did you get the report . No. Mr. Irving . I did not. Then theres the issue of what took the National Guard so long to get on the scene. Acting chief of d. C. Police Robert Contee said the first guard members didnt show up until 4 and a half hours until after his initial request. Chief sund was pleading for the deployment of the National Guard. And in response to that, there was not an immediate yes. The National Guard is responding. Yes, the National Guard is on the way. The response was more asking about the plan, what was the plan for the National Guard. The response was more focussed on in addition to the plan the optics about how this looks with boots on the ground on the capitol. And my response to that was simply, i was just stunned that, i have officers that were out there literally fighting for their lives and, you know, were kind of going through what seemed like an exercise to really check the boxes. And there was not an immediate response. Let me be clear, optics as portrayed in the media played no role whatsoever in my decisions about security. And any suggestion to the contrary is false. Safety was always paramount when making Security Plans for january 6th. We did discuss whether the intelligence warranted having troops at the capitol. That was the issue. And the collective judgment at that time was no, the intelligence did not warrant that. Theres so much to go through there, mika, but i just want to go back to the staggering number. Four and a half hours. Four and a half hours. We interviewed colin powell who said he was looking at his tv. He said, where is the National Guard . Where are the reenforcements . When we were watching, we just kept asking the same thing, where is the National Guard . Where are the reenforcements . And i think most americans, at least americans who love this country and didnt want to see the peoples house torn to shreds by terrorists and seditionists were asking the same thing. And we need answers. These people got all the way in and so close to the people that they were talking about killing. Chanting. We really didnt get answers. I mean, and again, whether were talking about what ron johnson was lying about yesterday and what hes continued to lie about are what were talking about with the National Guard and what leaders saw on tv that day. Weve all heard the chants. We saw the nooses. We have since seen the chants hang mike pence. We knew mike pences life was in danger. The president knew mike pences life was in danger. Thats why he sent out a tweet attacking mike pence when he knew that his family, his children, and the Vice President of the United States was sitting inside the capitol. And yet despite this chaos that we saw, that America Saw Helplessly, four hours, it was four and a half hours before the National Guard came in, before order was restored. And it was a long time before other Police Departments were able to come in and help. And the question, mika, that still hasnt been answered is why . And by the way, pointing fingers at each other, thats not good enough. I hope the senate keeps after these people because members of congress were let down that day on both sides of the aisle. And americans were let down that day. That, the peoples house could be defiled the way these terrorists, these trump terrorists defiled the peoples house. Well, on a day that a huge function of our democracy was taking place and there was a trump rally planned, that the National Guard wasnt even close, four and a half hours. Lets bring in former and by the way, mika, remember, donald trump had been saying right, oh, i know. His caddy had been saying, come to Washington On January the 6th. Its going to be crazy. Youre not going to believe what happens on January The 6th. This was telegraphed. This was obvious. And remember a lot of people were talking about the dangers that could be could be inherent by attending these events on January The 6th. This was known. Law enforcement officers knew this could be a dangerous day, and they did nothing. Lets bring in former u. S. Senator now and msnbc news and analyst Claire Mccaskill. You heard our comments, is there anything from a policing Point Of View where we might be off or we might be being too hard on the planners and the different his of the different sets of Security Organizations around washington, what are we missing . Youre not missing much actually. Theres a saying in american policing that the Greatest Lie In American Policing is we are communicating. Quite clearly as you have been reporting and others have been reporting, Law Enforcement was not communicating well. Either before, during and even now after this event. The intelligence there was not a failure of intelligence. There was a failure of what to do with the intelligence that was there. One of the senators talked about a failure of imagination. And so, as this goes forward and these congressional hearings are not the end all, you are going to need a National Commission that can dig into this, congress can get its act together and get that commission formed. The Senate Hearings provide some additional information, some additional things to discuss, but you really need a much more indepth discussion of this and an examination and analysis. One of the things that has not come up in this is the Secret Service. The Secret Service is working with im assuming the same intelligence yet they brought the Vice President of the United States and his family to the capitol on that day. What was their analysis . What were they looking at and why did they feel comfortable going to the capitol that day . So that idea of failure to communicate, Secret Service evidently might have been looking at different information than Capitol Police and metropolitan police were looking at. The National Guard point you bring up, why wasnt the National Guard at least positioned some place close to the capitol where if they were needed, even if it took a while for authorization they could rapidly respond instead of coming in from maryland, virginia and all these far flung place that is a had to come in from. So, mr. Commissioner, post 9 11 we constantly been reporting about chatter, that Intelligence Agencies were picking up about possible attacks on new york city, possible attacks on other parts of the United States. The intel leading up to these riots, this insurrection against the United States government on january 6th, it wasnt hidden. It didnt take Extraordinary Technology to figure out what was going to happen on that day. All you had to do was go on twitter, go on parler, Go On Facebook and it was all there. It was laid out in front of these people. There were warnings that were bouncing off of these agency heads. Is there a possibility in your mind, first of all, would this have ever happened if you were running operations there . Secondly, do you think there were some people does it appear there were some people who were willfully blind to the emerging threat . I dont know about willfully blind but maybe under the pressures of washington the term has been used optics. The idea of mayor of washington didnt want the National Guard to be equipped with normal riot gear, the people she brought in for traffic control. And she made a comment to the effect that she didnt want the National Guard to be not coming into the city without being controlled by the metropolitan police. Theres just so many things that went wrong here. Its mind boggling. And its hard to keep track of all of the things that went wrong. The preparation for this event, thats what as a former Law Enforcement official i cant wrap my arms around that there seemed to be so little coordination before the fact between these agencies. They werent talking with each other. They werent communicating with each other. Its just extraordinary frustrating from a Law Enforcement professional perspective. Extraordinarily disheartening and frustrating. Claire, you listen to the acting chief of d. C. Police contee in his testimony yesterday saying he was surprised by the reluctance yesterday to deploy the National Guard. The question is whose reluctance . Who paused . Who waited four and a half hours to send in the National Guard until it was too late . Remember by the time the National Guard got there at about 5 40 p. M. It was clean up duty. They cleared the capitol and the riot and attack was over effectively. The president of the United States is the commander in chief, right . So that request goes into the pentagon, would have to be approved there. We need to know who sat on that request for four hours. Well, theres no doubt that the commander in chief complicated this. I mean, i hope that the Armed Services committee has a hearing also and brings in everyone who touched this on january 6th. And i know the question i would ask of the guy who was delaying sending the National Guard if i were still on the committee, i would say, were you watching tv . I mean, this is not like theyre getting communication from a farflung battlefield where nobody knows whats going on. This was happening in front of all of our eyes. We were seeing it. And the notion that the pressure they felt from the white house played into the Decision Making and how quickly they responded is a very big deal. And whoever delayed the response because they might have felt that pressure should be relieved of their command. I mean, theres no question about that. And this is something we can figure out because there will be a trail. And i hope that either the committees that met yesterday and began to sort this out bring in all of the people ill tell you the other thing, guys, this is going to really push, can you imagine how quickly this would have occurred if d. C. Was a state . If the mayor of d. C. Was the governor that had the power to deploy the National Guard . Imagine how quickly this would have happened if this wasnt something that had to be decided by 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue instead of the people that run the city. So, it is really unfortunate. And i hope, i hope they figure it out. By the way, if the fbi gives you a piece of paper that says war and Capitol Building in the same document, i would suggest that go to the very top of the command immediately. I just saying. Unbelievable. Claire, we talked about ron johnson who you served with. The fact that even after the months and months of lies by the president of the United States, the Conspiracy Theories to undermine americans confidence in democratic institutions, even after that continued after the election day, even after the riots, ron johnson is still lying today. Something that is equally disconcerting is watching ted cruz and josh hawley, two people leaders of the conspiracy along with donald trump for these riots for sedition against the United States, asking questions yesterday, josh hawley afterwards getting very indignant when a reporter asked what he would say to those who would say that he was a part of this and inspiring these riots and this insurrection. He said nobody who knows anything about it believes that. Well, actually his political mentor John Danforth said he was responsible for the riots. But for josh hawley, John Danforth said, his mentor, guy who enforced him, a guy who is ashamed now that he endorsed him, said but for josh hawley, these riots would have never happened. The Kansas City Star said the same thing, he needed to be expelled. St. Louis dispatch said he needed to be expelled. Because he was responsible for these riots. I just im just wondering, you served with cruz and johnson. You ran against hawley. I just what are your thoughts when these people that have seen the destruction of the United States capitol on that day, just the trashing of it and also more importantly if seen tens of millions of americans confidence in our democracy undermined, what are your thoughts as a former senator that theyre still doing this. Theyre still at this. Theyre still shameless. Compare and contrast liz cheney and what she said and with these yahoos who are still perpetrating the big lie. The former guy when the Supreme Court decided that new york gets to look at his financial documents, he once again perpetrated the big lie and all of them are still falling in line behind the big lie. And you know, listen, josh hawley is really good At Indignation and fox news appearancings. Not so good at coming home and doing a town hall and answering the questions of the people he works for. He dumpbt do that. He doesnt come home and open himself up to questions from his constituents. But, he can get really indignant in the hallways of the capitol and his home in virginia. And it is really unfortunate. I got to tell you, i was really surprised that somebody didnt confront ron johnson, another member of the committee yesterday, when he started in with another big lie. There is no evidence. They arrested hundreds of people, there is no evidence that there are any left wing Extremist Groups anywhere in this group. None. He reads some kind of bogus thing written on the internet and we all know anything can be written on the internet and even though amy did call him out at the end of the hearing, nobody really confronted him and said, what are you doing . Isnt it enough that you continue to lie and corrode our democracy about the election being free and fair. Now you have to lie about this . It was really concerning to me that nobody really took him on face to face after he did that in the hearing. As you say, Amy Klobuchar near the end said this was a planned insurrection. I think most members here very firmly agree with that shot clearly at ron johnson. Former nypd commissioner bill bratton, thank you for your expertise. The major car accident involving tiger woods. His team said tiger is awake, responsive and recovering in his Hospital Room thank goodness after having a rod put into his leg during surgery following a rollover car crash near los angeles yesterday. In the update tweeted to tigers account, the Chief Medical Officer and interim ceo at harbor Ucla Medical Center where woods underwent Emergency Surgery said the 45yearold golfer suffered significant orthopetic injuries to his right lower extremity. The rod was inserted into his tibia to stabilize fractures and screws and pins were used to stabilize injuries to a foot and ankle. Driving to a tv shoot on a Sweeping Downhill Stretch of road through los angeles suburbs, Authorities Say woods was alone in his suv at around 10 15 a. M. Eastern, it was about 7 15 a. M. There it crashed into a raised median, crossed two oncoming lanes and rolled several times before ending up on its side near a steep road known for wrecks. Police say woods was alert as firefighters pried open the front windshield to get him out of the vehicle while the cause of the crash is under investigation, no charges were filed. Police say theres no evidence woods was impaired. And no one else was injured. They havent said yet how fast tiger was driving. Lets bring in mike tirico of nbc sports and best selling author and columnist mike lubika. Mike tirico, you and i were going back and forth yesterday trying to get information on this. Tiger obviously hes been going through a lot with his health, his back problems, the first thing to say is thank goodness he survived this wreck and looks like hes recovering after surgery this morning. As you saw those images of that car, what went through your mind . It looked like you were watching a nascar race and it was a really bad crash. Yeah. Thats something you think, man, can anybody survive that kind of impact, the damage that was done to the vehicle. Its a scary sight, willy li. Willie. Hes lucky to be alive and all of us covered sports, know tiger, anybody with any humanity is just glad to see that. The conversation that will come will be the golf in the future and all that. But what struck you yesterday as you saw the amount of coverage and the reaction from people around golf and around sports and the around the country including former president obama the impact this athlete had extraordinary cultural sports, societal impact and weve seen so many highs and lows and to watch this play out yesterday was a gut punch for a lot of folks. We saw that statement, mike tirico, last night from tigers team updating us on his medical condition. I mean, frankly, when you look at that scene and we turned on our tvs yesterday, you feared the worst. There was some relief that obviously those are very serious injuries to his leg, but you look at that car and you realize how much worse it could have been. Youre dialed in to tigers world. Do you know anything else about how hes doing and what theyre hearing from him this morning . No. It had been pretty quiet. I was surprised to wake up to that statement this morning and glad because i know there was so many questions from so many folks who do care about tiger just to hear what the specifics were of the injuries and you start going through the real work that they had to do just to kind of keep the leg with a chance to continue on and have some normalcy in life down the line, but those close to tiger, the people in the golf world, there are a pretty small group, there was a lot of conversations and texts going back and forth in the last 24 hours or 12 hours i should say that were mostly geared towards, man, thank goodness hes alive after that because the fears of what you said showing the scene and describing it were felt by so many. Yeah. Hes been stabilized. Hes up talking. In fact, we heard from the officer the first to respond to the scene who said he was responsive at the time, that he was talking to tiger. He said, whats your name, sir. Tiger looked at him and said, my name is tiger. And he immediately recognized him as tiger woods. Were thankful hes okay. As you look ahead, mike, we dont want to get too far ahead to golf, had the five back surgeries, he was talking about it at the tournament a couple days ago, he has trouble tying his shoes and all the problems he had. This is obviously a major, major setback for that. Do you think hes the kind of guy who will come back from this. I think i know the answer to that based on how hes driven himself in the past, but do you expect to see him back on the golf course. It sounds so difficult because of the details there in the surgery. Im sure well hear from orthopedic surgeons and people who know about the body and the golf swing. The golf swing starts from the ground up using your legs. Tiger famously won the 2008 u. S. Open playing an 18hole playoff with another hole after that with a torn acl and broken left leg. This is all the damage to the right leg. You think about golf immediately put so much weight on that right leg as righthanded golfer to turn into the ball once contact comes. Those are all conversations for way down the line. But i will hit on with the point you were alluding to in your question, willie, it sounds physically impossible when you start to see this considering five back surgeries, getting closer to 46 years old. This is not when you play your best golf. This is when your body breaks down. His body has broken down as much as any golfer, but if theres anyone ever who could do it, that would be the guy who could find some way to do it. I think most of us who have covered him, watched him, know him, know how important it has been for him to be with his kids. We saw him play the father son tournament with his son sam in december. And you just hope tiger can have that joy in life be able to get around and enjoy his daughters soccer and his sons golf at this point more before youre thinking, man, i hope i can watch him min another major. We have seen all that greatness. Its personal as opposed to professional for a lot of folks. All right, mike tirico, thank you so much. We really appreciate you being with us. Thanks, mike. Of course. So, mike, we were talking yesterday about this after the accident happened and we were talking about how a lot of people paid closer attention to tiger woods tumultuous childhood and all that hes been through with his father, very tumultuous relationship with his father, and through his life the extraordinary comeback in 2019. I just want to follow up on what mike tirico said, the most moving moment when he ran over and he and his kids had a long, long emotional embrace. It was just a wonderful moment. And it was hard not to think about that yesterday, to think about how much this guy has fought to come back over the past several years and now this. Yeah, joe. I was thinking the same thing yesterday when we were talking he finally seemed happy being tiger woods when he came all the way back to win the masters. That scene with his children, that was fantastic. And i was hoping that their childhood was going to be a little less complicated, lets put it that way than his had been with earl woods as his dad. And even though he continued to have physical issues and he continued to have surgeries and just had another one on television on sunday he was talking about an mri, tiger woods, sounds like a cliche, seemed happy at last. And now this happens. And its part of this extraordinary second act hes had to his American Life that began with a much smaller issue with the car at the end of his driveway on a thanksgiving night in 2009. And he came all the way back up and he fought through all the injuries. And i was thinking as i watched him with charlie at the father son, i thought to myself, you know, this guy finally seems comfortable in his own skin and seems happy away from the golf course maybe to a greater extent than he hfr had been in his life, joe. Yeah. You know, everybody that ive talked to that knows him actually talked about how happy he seemed to be in his personal life, and that it really was rewarding and it is rewarding that he has worked so hard to be the father that he did not have. So we can just be thankful this morning that the injuries, though initially we were concerned were life threatening are not life threatening. And as mike tirico says, he may not be able to go on to a golf course and compete competitively again but he sure can watch his son play, he can watch his daughters soccer matches, can actually heal and give his children the childhood that he didnt get. You know, ben hogan, 71 years ago was in a car with his wife that got hit by a greyhound bus. Joe, he was younger at the time. He was only 37 than tiger was. And his pelvis, ribs, shoulder, eye, everything that could possibly have happened, his body was crushed and shattered. And he came back to play the best golf of his life. Tiger snot going to do this. Tiger is never going to be tiger of 21 and 22 and 23, but im not ruling out the fact that he might once again play golf. Mike lupica, thank you very much for being on this morning with this developing story. Still ahead on morning joe, the confirmation of President Bidens budget pick neera tanden is facing increasingly long odds. My friendly advice to President Biden is to withdraw Neera Tandens nomination and select someone who at the very least has not promoted wild Conspiracy Theories and openly bashed people on both sides of the aisle that she happens to agree with. All right. So Neera Tandens chance to lead the Office Of Management And Budget will be decided today. Her nomination hangs by a thread after several moderate republicans and one swing democrat already voiced their opposition. Senator Lisa Murkowski could be the deciding vote. So willie, lets just make this as simple as we can because ive read a lot of conspiracy not Conspiracy Theories but i read a lot of theories on why joe manchin is voting this way or that way and why republicans are being hypocritical and i understand that. But this is washington, d. C. I would not expect Mitch Mcconnell to support my nomination to any Cabinet Agency after calling Him Moscow Mitch and neither should neera tanden. And when she compares a republican senator unfavorably to a vampire and called Susan Collins who is in a Working Coalition with joe manchin the worst and that she should be, quote, haunted for the rest of her days, this is not complicated, all right . This is washington, d. C. Its a very small boat all these senators are paddling around in. And i will just tell you if there were somebody i had to vote on that insulted one of my colleagues that i worked with day in lets make this simple. If somebody insulted you, and trashed you, and then wanted to come on the show, no. No, i dont think thats going to happen. You can go talk to willie about that. So joe manchin has seen Susan Collins being called the worst. Susan collins should be haunted for the rest of her days. Hes hoping to forge a Bipartisan Coalition moving forward over the next two years with Susan Collins. And so, hes going to stand by his colleague. This is again, is it hypocritical . Sure. Its hypocritical. Have i said harsh, harsh things about republicans. Yes, i have. A lot of people have. But they dont have a vote on what we do everyday. They do have a vote on what neera tanden is doing and if youre running omb, kind of important that you have a good working relationship with the hill. You know what, you can tweet harsh tweets about people, or you can get nominated. I just dont think you can do both and maybe thats hypocritical on the republicans part and joe manchins part, but it also its the way politics is. And the Biden Administration certainly should understand that and so should neera. The Biden Administration continues to hang with neera tanden saying she was their nominee. This was entirely predictable from their Point Of View. The tweets have been public for years. We knew her view when she worked for Hillary Clinton attacking bernies supporters. And going after republicans and democrats alike. The question, Claire Mccaskill, what is more important, her tweets or the hypocrisy from republicans who now suddenly are stunned and outraged by people saying mean things and by keeping the temperature too hot and Everything Else that they stood by and watched under donald trump but should not the white house have seen all of this coming . Yes, shes smart. Shes qualified, but shes also a partisan who worked for Hillary Clinton, has gone after a lot of people. Well, i would imagine, i dont know this, but i would imagine there was discussion, do you really think they would have the nerve to not vote for this nominee because of mean tweets . Yes. Really . You know, weve watched over four years what mean tweets have done to our country. So i get that some people are going but Claire Mccaskill, let me ask you, lets say Amy Klobuchar was called a vampire by a republican and came before your committee or Somebody Else that you were close to in the United States senate was called, quote, the worst and they should be haunted for the rest of their lives, would you vote for that person if your friend came to you and said, i was really offended by this and can we really trust this person to not be hostile when theyre in the omb for a republican president . Come on. You know how it works, right . Yeah. But joe, i get your point. But things are a little different now based on what the president of the United States did with his twitter account. I just think it takes a lot of nerve. I mean, i get your point. And it is a good one. And joe biden wants it to be a different kind of environment and all that is fair, but at the end of the day, she has apologized. She has said she feels badly that she allowed her passion to overtake her, you know, what she should have done in terms of looking to the future and maybe serving in a democratic cabinet, but all of that you just cannot ignore how incredibly hypocritical it is for the Republican Party to get up in arms about mean tweets. It is hypocritical, mika. Its hard to ignore. Its very hard to ignore. And it should be pointed out theres two sides to this because the Biden Administration definitely wants to turn the page on this type of thing. Its the same thing that they dealt with in the press office. They had to do what they had to do because they dont want to be like what weve been dealing with for four years. Having said that, the hypocrisy is appalling. Another nominee facing stiff opposition from republicans is xavier becerra. Joe biden needs to go back to the Drawing Board and send us a nominee who actually knows something about Public Health the middle of a pandemic. Im hardpressed to see any way such a radical and underqualified nominee should fill such a critical post at this crucial time. Again come on. The hypocrisy is appalling. We had golf caddies running the white house. We had trumps kids running the white house. Oh my god. How about the crazy doctor, the first one. The first of many. Did we hear any concerns, willie, about scott atlas when he was going in there spreading lies. When aczar was again asleep at the switch and time and again sitting back quietly and following Donald Trumps worst Conspiracy Theories at the most dangerous moments of this pandemic . Come on. What a joke. Well, theyve surrendered their right to be outraged. They surrendered their right to question these people. I dont think they realize that over the last five years by standing by and letting scott atlas and the parade of unqualified people walk into the west wing they surrendered their right to be outraged by nominations like this. Deb haaland faced questions. John baraso of wyoming a Ranking Member on the Senate Energy and Natural Resources committee confronted haaland about a tweet from last october. Just a couple months ago you tweeted, republicans dont believe in science, pretty broad statement that you made there. And it was on your this was in october of 2020. So not too long ago. Now were also republicans. Do you think that as medical doctors we dont believe in science . How do you stand by this statement . Senator, yes. If youre a doctor, i would assume that you believe in science. Republicans as well. Its concerning to those of us who want to train, believe in science yet for a broad brush that were all disbelievers. Lets talk through these nominees with white house editor for politico sam stein and White House Correspondent for Pbs News Hour yamiche alcindor. Sam, game this out for us. How many of these nominees will survive . How many will not . Well, first of all, everyone knows if youre going to send a mean tweet you got to start it with, with all due respect or respectfully comma and everything after that doesnt count. Neera should have known that. I think in the end it looks in all likelihood that neera will be unable to find that elusive republican vote, which she does need now that joe manchin announced his position. That could make her the lone casualty among the cab nations. Xavier becerra, deb haaland appear to have a unified Democratic Caucus behind them could get through on the slimmest of majorities. Yeah, it does look like neera is in serious trouble. Well find out today with the committee vote. All things considered, that would be a fairly successful slate of Cabinet Nominees from biden if he only were to lose one, but obviously it would set him back at a moment when they need to produce a budget. And that will be problematic for the administration. Well, and mika, lets just bring up that there have been whispers from the very beginning of neeras nomination that this was going to be a hard lift for the Biden Administration. And they knew that going in. They nominated her any way. They were hoping to get all the votes that were needed. But certainly this is something that the white house has been concerned about from the start. And lets just be really honest, theyre not terribly surprised they find themselves where they are. The thing that was the issue were her tweets. And i think i echo claire. Its the last thing you would think republicans would go after anybody for given what we have endured over the past four years. Having said that, whats the word from the white house on how this is all going . Well, in some ways we have to realize that this is the politics of social media after donald trump in some ways saying that now were almost back to the standards where people want to look at twitter and say we need to be respectful on that side even though you had a party that stood by former President Trump for so long when he was going after his own members in his own party apart from just democrats. But the white house is sticking by especially neera tanden but all of their nominees. Yesterday White House Press secretary jen psaki asked if the white house had a backup plan if neera tanden didnt get the votes needed. They didnt answer. They have to have some sort of backup plan because her nomination just seems to be really in such problems. And this really is something that i think also highlights the fact that as we have been talking shes someone who from the very beginning the moech she was nominated people said okay but her twitter is something that will be a problem for her. And that also is, of course, something she had to apologize for. There are people, of course, that are saying that this is sexist. Theres even a letter thats been sent saying its a double standard, that its racist, her being an indianamerican woman held to a standard that a white man, the former president , donald trump being one of them was not held to. But at the end of the day this does come back to the fact that the tweets are about people who have the power to imperil her nomination. And that is the big problem here. The fact that the people that she went after are now people that have the power to stop her from getting this job. So, sam, let me address the sexist and racist charges about neera tanden. Though i have been called a murderer 12 times by the president of the United States on twitter, were i to try to get past the senate based on tweets that i made over the last four years, im pretty sure this white 64 southern guy from Southern State schools would also not make the cut even if it was to mow the white houses lawn, if that were, in fact, a senateapproved position. This is i think its just basic math. Its political math. If youve got people that have the votes to stop your nomination and you have insulted them over the past four years, its kind of like what we tell our kids, be careful about what you put on social media because its going to come back up. This is a good example that maybe republicans and democrats should be worried about. Not everybody out there is going its hypocritical. Its hypocritical. Yes. Yes. There are hypocrites in congress. But its also about counting votes. And sam, ill say of you or i would say of yamiche or anybody, if people were insulting you viciously on twitter and then said, hey, can i come on your show. No. No. No, you cant come on my show if youre going to insult people that we respect. So again, i understand people being very frustrate about it, but kind of basic politics here. Sure. First of all, im heartened to hear that you respect me. Thank you. Its been almost a decade. I finally get that affirmation. Thank you. Love and respect. Thank you. Second, you hit early on the thing thats underappreciated by people just how close knit the senate still is. Theyre people. They dont want to see their colleagues targeted in personal terms. They dont want to be targeted that way. You might find that people might find that odd because theyre so powerful, but they have feelings. And this is the type of stuff that can grate them. So, yes. This is the problem that neera faces is she attacked some members of a body that is collegial, that protects itself, that are human. That being said, i think the people who are making charges of sexism or racism here point to and this could be coincidental, im not taking a judgment here, the point of the fact that the main people, the main nominees who have been targeted or have seen their votes on the narrowest of margins are people of color. We just played a montage of people attacked. Deb haaland, native american. Xavier becerra, hispanic. Neera, indianamerican. Some other votes those are the ones in the minorities Cabinet Nominees. So they point to them and say, look, what is this . Cant just be coincidental. Why are these people under attack more than anyone else. And thats their argument. Now, in this case, neeras twitter feed i would agree with you, come from a white man, it would have caused problems. So i guess its a little bit in the eye of the beholder. So with all this going on, yamiche from the white house working on the vaccine, working on the international front, looking at sanctions toward russia, theres covid relief. And whats going on to try to get that over the finish line . Well, we learned last night that the house is going to vote on the 1. 9 trillion plan on friday. The white house is pretty confident that this is going to be a bill that theyre going to be able to get past. The big question is whether or not that 15 minimum wage is going to be passed and whether or not joe manchin and senator cinema, whether or not they are going to have an amendment that changes that to 11 an hour. The white house is making pretty firm that they want to keep it at 15 an hour, but again thats going to be up to the Senate Parliamentarian to figure out if that goes through. But this is really going to be the first big legislative test of the Biden Administration, and they know that. They know there are a lot of people watching because the president has really staked a lot of his Political Capital on this bill and hes come out time and time again to say this is urgent. He continues to say on a National Stage and on a domestic stage that the real problem is whether or not is whether we do too little, not too much. And the white houses plan continuously said to go big. So my understanding from the White House Point of view is that they feel like this is going to be a bill thats passed and its going to be a bill thats passed before march 15th. Sam stein, first of all, congratulations on earning our respect. It took you over a decade, but you got there and Today Is The Day you become president. Congratulations. A lot of time, yes. Lets talk about the Politico Morning Consult polls. You bring them to us every week. This week youre looking at Climate Change. Yeah. Its a tale as old as time at this point where you see democrats by and large believe that Climate Change is responsible for these weird, whacky Weather Events. Republicans not as much. You see here right in front of you republicans concerned 44 . Not concerned 53 and look at the numbers for democrats, 89 to 7. What does this mean . It means our real world evidence, science, is not penetraing one Political Party as much as the other. What does that mean Going Forward . It means that policymaking to deal with things like these Winter Storms but also the weird Weather Events in the summer as well is going to continue to be hard if one Party Continues to believe that the Climate Change is not responsible for this stuff, then its elected officials probably wont have an incentive to Act Legislatively to address it. Its a poll we see time and time again even as weather continues to get worse. Sam stein, yamiche alcindor, thank you for your reporting this morning very much. It is just about the top of the hour now and joining us now we have msnbc contributor mike barnicle, chief White House Correspondent for the New York Times peter baker, and Associate Professor of Political Science at fordham university, christina greer. The top officials responsible for securing the u. S. Capitol on the day of the january 6th attack, testified before congress yesterday. They blamed poor intelligence for the massive security failure. A Communications Breakdown. And one another. We heard from the head of the d. C. Metro police and three others who have since resigned the former house and Senate Sergeants at arms and the head of the Capitol Police at the time. Here is u. S. Capitol Police Captain Carneysha Mendoza and steven sund explaining what they faced. At some point my right arm got wedged between rioters and the railing along the wall. A cdu sergeant pulled my right arm free and had he not im certain it would have been broken. I received chemical burns to my face that still have not healed to this day. I witnessed officers being knocked to the ground and hit with various objects that were thrown by rioters. Of the multitude of events ive worked in my nearly 19year career in the department, this was by far the worst of the worst. We planned for an increased level of violence at the capitol and some participants may be armed. I witnessed Insurgents Beats Police Officers with fists, pipes, sticks, bats, metal barricades and flag poles. These criminals came prepared for war. These people came specifically with equipment and you bring Climbing Gear to a demonstration. Youre bringing explosives. Youre bringing chemical spray they were planning on our agency not being at what they call full strength. Then also the fact that we were dealing with two pipe bombs specifically set right off the edge of our perimeter to what i suspect draw resources away. I think there was a significant coordination with this attack. Mike, you know, the lie, the lie that donald trump and all of his supporters really give a damn about Police Officers is exposed so harshly in this capitol attack. We just heard former chief say that Police Officers were battered with fists, pipes, sticks, chemical agents, of course we saw one Trump Supporters brutalize a Police Officer with an american flag. Another Police Officer saying that as they were being beaten on the ground they thought they were going to die and wondered what his four children were going to do, how they were going to get by without him. A total lie. And you have people like ron johnson still lying about what these trump terrorists did to Police Officers. You have ted cruz, josh hawley responsible for this insurrection. We have John Danforth, his mentor saying this would have never happened but for josh hawley. You see that all of that talk about supporting Law Enforcement officers, it was just political garbage. They dont mean any of it. If they did, they would all be condemning these trump terrorists by name, but they just wont do it. Ron johnson is still pretending that it was Somebody Else who did this other than who Kevin Mccarthy shouted to the president of the United States at the time that it was Donald Trumps supporters. Turned into domestic terrorists who were beating up Police Officers all day. You know, joe, a couple things surprise me in that hearing yesterday. And the Biggest Surprise to me personally sitting there listening to it, listening to ron johnson specifically is that no one on that panel, republican or democrat, stood up and said, would you stop lying to the American People because thats what he was doing. He was lying. And the other aspect of it is these hearings are going to continue. I want to hear from the Secret Service. How did the secret Service Bring the Vice President of the United States into the United States Senate Chamber . Did they have the intelligence that told them what would possibly happen outside . Did they share that intelligence . I want to hear from the pentagon who took the phone calls over at the pentagon from the Capitol Police department requesting help, requesting aid. Theyre right across the river. Who took those phone calls . Why was this such a mess . Its incredible because you are absolutely right. We had one Police Officer killed on january 6th. We had multiple Police Officers i bet still out of work, still injured, still on leave and the moral of that Capitol Police department has to have been shattered by the negligence of the bodies that control them, the United States senate and the United States house of representatives. Lets hear what republican senator ron johnson said during yesterdays hearing. Promoting Conspiracy Theories and claiming that fake Trump Supporters were to blame for the violent storming of the capitol. He used much of his allotted time reading from a piece published by the right wing website the federalist that made unsubstantiated claims about the attack. Many of the marrers families with small children, elderly, overweight or just plain tired or frail. Trace not typically attributed to the riot prone. Many were propolice shirts or carried propolice Black And Blue flags. Although the crowd represented a broad Cross Section of americans mostly Working Class by their appearance and manner of speech, some people stood out. A very few didnt share the Jovial Sfrendly Earnest Demeanor of the great majority. Some obviously didnt fit in and he describes four different types of people, plain clothes militants, agents provocateurs, fake trump protesters and disciplined uniformed attackers. These are the people that probably planned this. As mike said that parade of lies from Senator Johnson went uninterrupted, two hours later senator Amy Klobuchar of minnesota said this few things that are very clear to me, the first is the statements at the beginning from all the witnesses, they may have disagreed on some details and, you know, okay. But there is clear agreement that this was a planned insurrection. So when i think most members here are very firmly agree with that, and i think its important for the public to know that. This was planned. We now know this was a planned insurrection. It involved White Supremacists. It involved Extremist Groups. And it certainly could have been so much worse except for the bravery of the officers. Peter baker, lets repeat what the former chief of the Capitol Police said yesterday in his testimony, this was a coordinated militarystyle assault. People were prepared for war. The Conspiracy Theory that the Senator Johnson just read aloud inside the Senate Chamber for all of the members to hear and for the country to hear repeating all the lies come from again dark corners of the internet now elevated by United States senator to this hearing yesterday. Yeah. Its a sign of the times that Conspiracy Theories have such traction in the halls of congress, the avenues of our government. Remember, we always had Conspiracy Theories in this country and goes with the territory. But never had until now, until the last few years, sanction from the oval office and the halls of congress in the way they do now, right . You dont believe what you see with your eyes. Dont believe all those people flying trump flags, wearing maga hats who are shouting pro trump statements, who have history of pro trump, you know, dialogue on online in terms of their social media, all of that is just a fake. This is what this is really is just an attempt to discredit President Trump. And you know, ive seen this before, willie. What i saw i saw this in russia. This is exactly the kind of mentality that Vladimir Putin used to say all the time. He would tell people that demonstrators in the streets were really fake agents of foreign provocateurs, really american stooges. They werent really russians who actually oppose him because nobody could possibly oppose him. Thats the kind of lies put out there in order to explain away facts and scenes and pictures and in this Case Prosecutions that are obviously hard to refute if not impossible to refute. Ron johnsons fire hose of falsehoods is straight out of Vladimir Putins play book. It really is. It is really disgraceful for the United States senate. He disgraces wisconsin. He disgraces United States senate. He disgraces american democracy by spreading russianstyle propaganda in a hearing. What drives him at this point . Because hes even losing his state. Late last week the Editorial Board of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel published this scathing editorial entitled ron johnsons whitewash of the u. S. Capitol riot shows why Wisconsin Senior senator has to go and reads in part, johnsons grasp on reality has been tenuous for years but even more so since he aligned himself lock step with former President Donald Trump since trump left office, two kinds of republicans calls of White Supremacists and conspiracy theorists from the party and those like johnson who long for the return of their would be king. Johnson must go. It is obvious that he wont do the honorable thing and resign after violating his oath to support and defend the constitution by what he has shown of his character there is no reason to believe he will keep his Campaign Promise to not run for a third term when this one expires. Lets throw these featherweights out of office, wisconsin, so no one is ever tempted to follow their despicable path again. I think thats pretty clear. Christina greer . Yeah. Im just so disappointed with so Many Republican senators who refuse to ever think about the american public. Senator johnson will most likely run again. What we saw yesterday in the reading of Conspiracy Theories and lies is he still has a base. Theres still quite a few residents in wisconsin who long for donald trump and theyre very proud that Senator Johnson is upholding that mantle. Its important that the democrats articulate a vision not just running away from the rhetoric of donald trump and his ilk, but what exactly are we going to do to move this country forwards, not just in policy but in a moral compass. January 6th most of us could have seen it coming, most of us knew it was coming if you follow social media. The president had been Advertising It for weeks. But those visuals, mika, are so disturbing. We have to really sit back and think about it in a wholistic way. To see those primarily men but not all men primarily white men, not all white men, the depths to which theyll go to maintain power. And the former president told them to do it. And we have to take this very seriously. For many black americans we know the capacity of particular White Americans and what theyre willing to do to maintain power. Anyone who grew up in the u. S. South knows that. So when we think about Senator Johnson and various senators still upholding this messaging, we have to take it seriously. And i think biden and schumer must lead the charge. So, peter baker, listening to the testimony yesterday from these different Law Enforcement leaders, just seemed to me there was some finger pointing going on. We still dont know what took four and a half hours for the National Guard to get on scene when the United States capitol was under siege by rioters. It seemed that bipartisan call for a 9 11style commission is making more sense everyday. Well, i think thats right, exactly. The impeachment trial, whatever you thought of its result obviously provided a more gripping version of events than we had ever seen and underscored how many questions have been left to be answered, right . You saw that again yesterday. The ones that mike just talked about. We need to know a lot more about what the government knew, when it knew it, didnt prepare, why it didnt prepare and why it didnt react with the speed and efficiency you would have expected in the moment itself. And more importantly, or just as importantly, i think, i would like to know what happened in the white house at that time. And you heard republican senators zero in on that during the impeachment trial. What did the president know and when did he know about it . How did he respond . Because the public actions he took obviously do not suggest a president who worried about his Vice President , worried about his lawmakers, worried that this, you know, was started off as a rally had gotten way, way out of control and obviously as the police chief said yesterday never intended to be a peaceful rally in the first place and meant to be Military Style. Now the problem for genuine 9 11style commission it has to be genuinely bipartisan. We see reports our friends in play book wrote this morning about how Nancy Pelosi Discussion Draft Talks about 74 partisan draft on the commission. Members of the 9 11 Commission Said that wouldnt fly. It was bipartisan, one democrat, one republican. Even numbers on that panel. Former officials not current officials who have elections in front of them and therefore can get past sort of the partisan polarization we see right now in washington. Thats the only way were going to get to a define, definitive account of this if we can get past the partisanship. It will be harder than 9 11 because partisanship is at the heart and center of this very event. And mike, hard to get to the truth as peter says because you have a large number of those senators as we heard again yesterday who either actually dont believe what happened happened or corrupt enough to not say it outloud because theyre afraid of voters. 65 last week in an a. P. Poll of republicans said they dont believe that joe biden was fairly elected as president of the United States. So people like ron johnson who have no moral compass, perhaps, listened to that and say, i cant go out and tell the truth because i might lose my job. But when he perpetuates the lies and says them outloud, its important to think what that opens us up to, what people believe they were in the right in rushing into that building and beating and in one case killing a Police Officer. Sure. Willie, were still living in a climate of denial by Many Republicans. This past weekend you had the House Minority leader Steve Scalise saying he doesnt believe that joseph r. Biden was elected in a free and Fair Election in this country. Hes the House Minority leader, republican, House Minority leader. Still in denial over the facts of the case. With regard to the 9 11 commission, we ought to have bob kerry on at some point this week to talk about it. He was a member of that commission. I think he would tell you that the biggest flaw he would see right now in terms of Bipartisan Commission to look at exactly what happened on january 6th is who is going to appoint the heads of the commission. Where are you going to find two people who put the politics aside, really put the politics aside, and dig into what actually happened on january 6th. I mean, the communication on that day was abominable. Clearly just from reading the public prints about what happened. Who was talking with whom . What agency was listening to another agency . Who was listening to the Capitol Police department . Again, what did the Secret Service know about the activities that were about to take place . Were they warned . Did they have an indepth level of intelligence about the dangers, the potential dangers . They brought the Vice President of the United States on to the floor of the United States senate. So i dont know what they knew, but weve got to find out exactly what they knew and what were they talking about in the white house with the president of the United States who was watching all of this play out on tv. Those are answers that the country needs to hear. But we need to hear it from we need to have a seriously independent Bipartisan Commission. I dont know whether thats possible in this day and age. We got to keep asking the questions. We turn now to yesterdays major car accident involving golfer tiger woods. Last night tigers Team Released a statement saying that he is awake, responsive and recovering in his Hospital Room. After having a rod put into his leg during surgery following a rollover car crash near los angeles. The Chief Medical Officer at the harbor Ucla Medical Center where woods underwent Emergency Surgery said the 45yearold golfer suffered significant orthopedic injuries to his right lower extremity. Doctors inserted a rod into his tibia to stabilize fractures and screws and pins to stabilize the injuries to his foot and ankle. Authorities say woods was alone in his suv when around 7 15 a. M. Local time he crashed into a raised median, crossed two oncoming lanes and rolled several times before ending up on its side near a steep road. Police say woods was alert as firefighters pried open the front windshield to get him out. The cause of the crash is under investigation. No charges were filed and police said there was no evidence woods was impaired and no one else was injured. They did not say how fast he was driving. The single car crash is another setback for the 15time major champion, now recovering from a 10th surgery over a decade of nagging injuries and other personal problems. Each time hes returned to the course with success. Most recently and has come back at augusta in 2019 where he captured his fifth masters title. Already sidelined while recovering from a fifth back surgery, Woods On Sunday said he hoped to return to this years Masters Tournament in april. So willie, obviously yesterdays terrible car accident is going to keep tiger woods off the golf course for quite some time. We dont know if he can ever come back or not. But, it is obviously another Health Setback for a guy who is one surgery after another and despite all of the obstacles, despite all the challenges of just extraordinary comeback in 2019 at the masters a lot of people were cheering for him then and are really praying and cheering for him this morning. No question about it. Thats the first and foremost, when you first saw those accident forgive me for being dark its still fresh in our minds when you saw the alert on your phone you thought about kobe bryant. That car is mangled. Thank god we can tell our viewers this morning that the injury was serious. He broke two bones in his legs and his foot and his ankle and that has to be reconstructed but that hes awake and responsive and was even as mika said officers arrived on the scene. They punched through the windshield with an ax when the firefighters got there, got him out of the car and he was responsive and talking. Thank god hes okay for his sake and sake of his kids and family. As for golf, hes 45 years old. Hell be 46 in december. Hes five back surgeries, he was at this tournament he was in town for this weekend just as he was sort of the head of the tournament. And was talking about all those injuries and said, boy, i hope i can get back in seven weeks for the masters, but its not a sure thing. Im going through all this rehab. I had the surgeries on hi back and my knees and Everything Else hes gone through physically over the last decade or so. So i think we should just be grateful hes healthy. Be grateful hes here for his kids and perhaps not expect too much Going Forward although as mike tirico reminded on our last hour, this is tiger woods. And he may look at this as a new challenge perhaps to come back and play golf. All right. Well be following this. And christina greer, Before You Go, were asking a lot of our guests to highlight someone for black history month. Who are you focussing on . Sandy lieu hamer. And fanny lou hamer, Civil Rights Activist and member of snick who organized folks all over mississippi to register to vote. She spoke famously at the dnc in Atlantic City in 1964 detailing the injustices that were going on in mississippi and beating that she and her colleagues endured in wynonna, mississippi, that changed her life physically forever. And it really its been weighing heavily on me as i read the detailed account i would suggest your viewers take the time to google it and really read what was done to her and so many blacks across the south, just trying to register themselves and others to vote. And why were still fighting for that right today, lets us know how far weve come but how far we have to go. Christina greer, thank you for that. Thank you for joining us this morning. Peter baker, what are you looking at today . Well, look, theres so many things to look at today that i think one of the things we want to pay allot of attention to is this Minimum Wage Ruling by the parliamentarian. Whats that going to mean for bidens agenda. This is a key litmus test for democrats how theyre going to move beyond Covid Relief To economic progress that will go be lasting in that sense and its a test of how far the president is willing to go in terms of bipartisanship. Is there a compromise hes willing to take, might not be everything he wants. Will he get blow back from his own party if he goes down that road. Doesnt get nearly as much attention because so Many Americans are obviously affected by this. Peter baker, thank you as well. Still ahead on morning joe, joined by two Military Veterans who happen to know now serve on capitol hill. Congressman jason crow and Mike Gallagher on the january 6th attack and much more. Sit i said sit i made my way through the crowd by yelling and pushing people out of my way until i saw Capitol Police in riot gear in the hallway. They were holding the hallway to keep rioters from penetrating deeper into the building. I immediately jumped in line with them to assist with holding the crowd of rioters. At some point my right arm got wedged between rioters and the railing along the wall. A cdu sergeant pulled my right arm free and had he not im certain it would have been broken. Shortly after that, an officer was pushed and fell to the floor. I assisted the officer to a safer location and got back in line. At some point the crowd breeched the Line Officers worked to hard to maintain. Civil disturbance units began to redeploy to keep rioters from accessing other areas of the building. I proceeded to the rotunda where i noticed a heavy smokelike residue and smelled what i believed to be Military Grade cs gas a familiar smell. It was mixed with Fire Extinguisher spray deployed by rioters. They continued to deploy cs into the rotunda. Officers received a lot of gas exposure. Which is worse inside the building than outside because theres nowhere for it to go. I received chemical burns to my face that still have not healed to this day. I witnessed officers being knocked to the ground and hit with various objects that were thrown by rioters. I was unable to determine exactly what those objects were. I immediately assumed command in the rotunda and called for additional assets. Officers began to push the crowd out the door. After a couple hours, officers cleared the rotunda but had to physically hold the door closed because it had been broken by the rioters. Officers begged me for relief as they were unsure how long they could physically hold the door closed with the crowd continually banging on the outside of the door, attempting to gain reentry. Eventually officers were able to secure the door with furniture and other objects. The night of january 7th until the very Early Morning hours of my birthday, january 8th i spent at the hospital comforting the family of our fallen officer and met with the medical Examiners Office prior to working with fellow officers to facilitate a motorcade to transport officer sicknick from the hospital. Of the multitude of events ive worked in my nearly 19year career in the department, this was by far the worst of the worst. U. S. Capitol Police Captain and army veteran Carneysha Mendoza with that testimony yesterday about what she and her fellow officers endured fighting off the rioters that breached the Capitol Building on january 6th. Joining us now form r Army Ranger Jason Crow of colorado and marine corps veteran Mike Gallagher of wisconsin they are introducing new legislation to secure a location for the Global War On Terrorism memorial on the National Mall and well get to that in a moment. But Mike Gallagher, listening to the senators yesterday, including those from your state, whats your reaction to what we heard about the capitol insurrection . Well, january 6th was obviously a horrible day. I come back to the image i saw jason really i think drawing upon his training and comfortable one of our fellow members of Congress Amidst that horrible event. So i think that day should remain a wakeup call that all of us in congress have to do everything we can to work across the aisle, to foster a better atmosphere here and to do what the people sent us here to do, which is to legislate, conduct oversight, not to spend all day, you know, spending mean tweets out. So, im proud to work with my friend jason with whom i disagree on a lot of issues but comes to honoring our nations heros were 100 aligned. Well talk about that in a moment, congressman. Willie geist. Congressman gallagher, i was reading through and you acknowledge joe bidens win in your state of wisconsin. You knocked down Conspiracy Theories about dominion voting systems. Youve gone through that and been pretty clear about that. Whats your reaction to the senator from your state ron johnson yesterday perpetuating Conspiracy Theories about January The 6th and saying they werent all Trump Supporters, they were provocateurs and antitrump forces. Well, i didnt see the hearing. I know that ron johnson legitimately wants to get to the bottom of any allegation of voter fraud or voter irregularity. I think there are a lot of states that made changes in the midst of the pandemic and have a dispassionate argument about whether those changes were wise Going Forward. And i do think its incumbent on every state, wisconsin included to do a version of what florida did post 2000 which is to take a look at what makes sense, what doesnt, you know, where we need to have a little more legislative oversight but ultimately what i believe is thats not the province of the federal government. Right . Its not the role of the federal government to tell the state of the wisconsin how to conduct its election, let alone how to allocate its electors. Yesterday congressman, just to be clear, he was talking about what happened on january 6th said there were provocateurs antitrump forces. Do you believe that, too . I didnt see what the senator said. He was talking about the attack there werent provocateurs. The people who attacked the capitol on january 6th werent necessarily Trump Supporters, they were provocateurs perhaps antifa, people who infiltrated and most of the Trump Supporters were peaceful . I dont think well, again, i didnt see the hearing or exactly what Senator Johnson said. I think all of us could look at that and say, okay, most of the people that showed up at the rally that morning were including the air force veteran who got killed tragically, didnt wake up thinking im going to be violently assaulting the u. S. Capitol let alone losing my life, right . There was probably a smaller number of people that showed up that day thinking, i want to break things. I want to make a mess. These are sorts of the like the proud boys crowd and a smaller number militia types, far right militia that showed up with a no kidding plan they had been planning for months Going Forward. And how that complex mix played out, im not exactly certain. I still have unanswered questions. I want to get to the bottom of it because at least six people have lost their lives including tragically a u. S. Capitol Police Officer. And thats unacceptable. We should all get to the bottom of that. And whether youre a far right activist or far left activist, advocating violence, perpetuating violence against your fellow citizens is 100 unacceptable. The former chief of the Capitol Police called it in his testimony yesterday a coordinated militarystyle attack. He said people there were prepared for war. Congressman crow, what was your reaction to the testimony you heard . Anything new . You obviously were there as was congressman gallagher, memorable photograph of you up there in the gallery crouching and protecting some of your fellow members of congress. Whats your reaction to what you heard yesterday . Well, it was horrific, right . We continue to hear stories about the bravery and courage of officers like the witness that we just saw. And you know, were going to continue to hear this as all the investigations unfold over the weeks and months ahead. So, we have to uphold the bravery of officers that did the right thing but also conduct investigations to determine what went wrong and failed. Both mike and i come from a military background. Thats wung thing we can agree on here is that this was a catastrophic security failure. Multiple levels in terms of the intelligence that didnt make it to the right level, the preparations that didnt occur, and the fact these officers were put into an untenable situation. Were both angry about the fact that these officers who sat there for hours to fight back this mob were put into that situation and they never should have been in the first instance. Yeah. Mike gallagher, i know you have to leave, so if you could tell us Before You Go about the legislation youre working on. Well, jason crow and i are working to get a place on the National Mall authorized for a Global War On Terrorism memorial, just as when you come to the National Mall now, you can go see the world war ii memorial, the vietnam war memorial, korean war memorial, we want that same place of honor for the men and women we fought with in the wars in iraq and afghanistan. Wars that may not have a clear end date, ve day, we think its fitting that when were old enough to bring our grandchildren and jason is a little closer to that age than i am, that well have a place on the National Mall where we can honor our fellow Brothers And Sisters in uniform. Jason crow. Yeah. I think you look at mike and i and some people would say, how could these two possibly Work Together because they seem so different, but were proof that it is possible for a soldier or marine to find a way to Work Together and get something done for the country. Which we hope to do. And people want to politicize everything these days. Were in an environment where everything is viewed through a political lens, but what were trying to do is show that we can actually recognize personal courage. We can recognize people that have done great things in a conflict now that has defined three generations of americans and really important that we have a place for those generations of americans to go to heal, to reflect, to take their families and to think about the way in which this conflict has changed the course of our history. Lets hope that moves forward quickly, congressman. As you know, this is the 20th anniversary of 9 11 in october, coming up on 20 years of war in afghanistan. Congressman gallagher, your colleague had to scoot, but i wanted to ask you about what you heard from some of the republicans in that room yesterday, particularly ron johnson perpetuating lies about what happened, he says, but did not actually happen on january 6th. Well, of course, willie, that continues. Thats part of the problem here is this isnt just about donald trump. Its about those around him that continue to enable these theories, these Conspiracy Theories and others. Theyre not changing. Its really dangerous. What the country really needs to hear right now of leaders of all backgrounds and political stripes say enough is enough. Were not going to perpetuate these theories anymore. Were not going to tell this misinformation and disinformation. Were going to try to find a way to Work Together. Until that happens, you know, were not going to fully resolve this issue. And there are plenty of examples of people that are not stepping up and doing what they need to do right now. All right, congressman jason crow, thank you. And our thanks to congressman Mike Gallagher for joining us as well. Good to have you both. Coming up, well talk to one of the lawmakers on the committee that questioned the officials responsible for keeping the capitol safe on january 6th. Senator angus king is standing by for that. Bring out the bold™ it is 42 past the hour. Beautiful shot of the white house this morning in washington, d. C. The Opposition Leader of the country of georgia was arrested yesterday. Police stormed the headquarters of the United National movement using tear gas and batons and arrested its leader on criminal charges. They also detained at least a dozen others. The Opposition Leader is charged with inciting violence at a 2019 antigovernment demonstration when protesters stormed parliament. He faces nine years in prison, if convicted. The Political Tension in that country started last october when the Georgian Dream Coalition Won the election. But opposition groups claim the voting was rigged and refused to take their seats in parliament. Last week the georgian Prime Minister resigned. Siting the plan to arrest the Opposition Leader as his reason. Meanwhile, the Biden Administration is preparing to sanction russia for the solar winds hack and the near fatal poisoning of Opposition Leader alexei navalny. The massive Cyber Security breach affected more than nine Government Agencies and roughly 100 different companies. The president of microsoft told senators at a hearing yesterday that its researchers believe at least 1,000 very skilled, very capable engineers worked on the breach. Joining us now, member of the Armed Services intelligence and rules committees, independent senator angus king of maine. Great to have you. Senator king good morning. The line that mika just talked about was the most concerning and what came out yesterday that is the fact that the head of microsoft said that this looked like a generational effort, part of a generational effort and that at least 1,000 very skilled engineers appeared to have been working on this hack. This is obviously russias one of russias means of warfare moving forward. How are we going to defend ourselves . Well, this is the most serious external threat that this country faces is cyber. Ironically you just had Mike Gallagher on. Mike and i were the cochair of something called the National Cyberspace Solarium Commission for the past two years working on this very issue. And helping the country to develop a cyber policy because solar winds is just the latest example of us being attacked in a systematic, comprehensive way. The good news about solar winds it appears it was a espionage attack that is gaining information. It wasnt what they call an active measures or disruptive attack, but it could have been. That was part of the testimony that we had yesterday. We saw in texas what happens when the electric grid goes down and we know that hackers have the capacity to do that. The russians did it in ukraine about three or four years ago. So, this is a chilling example of how serious this threat is to the country. So in the department of state, homeland security, treasury defense, were all breached. Obviously thats chilling as well. What are we going to make sure that never happens again . Well, in the National Defense bill that passed in december, there were 25 or 26 different provisions from our commission that are now in law. The most important of which was the creation of a National Cyber director. One of the problems is cyber is scattered all over. The responsibility for cyber and Cyber Defense is scattered all over the federal government. And resides principally in the private sector. 85 of the target space for a cyberattack is in the private sector. So we created this office of National Cyber director, appointed by the president , confirmed by the senate. Thats now in the law. The white house is working on setting that office up right now. Weve also got to work with our allies, make this an international effort. But there was an announcement yesterday that was very important, joe. And that was the white house is preparing to punish russia for this attack. And thats been the missing piece in all of this is a deterrent. One of the witnesses at our hearing yesterday said, you know, theyll always find another way in. He said were like a goalie taking shots from Wayne Gretzky and eventually the puck is going to get in the net. And so defense isnt the only answer. Its part of the answer. But we have to demonstrate to our adversaries that if they come at us like this, theres going to be a cost imposed. They have to have a calculus that says, well, i dont know. This could be a real problem. And the white houses announcement yesterday was very important to send a message that there are lines that you cant cross in this area, and if you do, youre going to pay the price. Well, and thats, of course, talking about sanctions. What about our own cyber warfare . If they go after lets say they go after our grid, our power grid. Do the russians understand that we not only have the capability but we have the will to cause much more damage to them . Well, the key term you just used was do they understand. And a deterrent doesnt work unless your adversary knows you have the capacity and willingness to use it. Remember dr. Strangelove, why didnt you tell us dmitry about the doomsday machine . Well, the premier like surprises. Deterrent isnt deterrent unless its public. There has to be a declaratory policy. Im hoping the steps yesterday are the beginning of the establishment of that. Because if you think back to most of the attacks that weve had, sonys, opm, the 2016 election, there wasnt much in the way of the response. That has to change in order the best cyberattack is the one that doesnt occur. But if all we do is try to patch and defend ourselves, theyre going to keep coming at us. So thats why i think im hoping that what happened yesterday is an indication that this administration is going to take this seriously and establish the principle that if you come after the United States in cyber, you will pay the price. Now, its also got to be international, joe. International sanctions are much more effective than just unilateral one country. If somebody is indicted in russia, i want it so they cant visit monte carlo or london vis london as well as new york. If we develop worldwide a Geneva Convention of cyber, i think they will also help to bring this very dangerous instrumentality under control. Senator king, you participated in the hearing we have been listening to quite a bit this hearing, the testimony from the heads of Law Enforcement organizations that tried and failed in many ways to protect the capitol on january 6th. What information did you hear and what troubled you the most . Well, first i have to say yesterday was a record for me. All four of the committees that im not had hearings. Three of them at exactly the same time, so i was bouncing back electronically between threer hearings at one time. In terms of the attack on the capitol, clearly we still need additional information. It sort of reminds you of september 11th, an intelligence failure. Not necessarily an intelligence failure. There was an intelligence about how dangerous it was. It didnt seem to get to the right people. You get back to the silo problem. And you get to the problem of who is in charge. John os fof asked that question yesterday. Who is in charge . And the answer isnt exactly clear, is it . Is it the sergeant of arms at the two houses . There is some kind of board. But it clearly didnt work. So i think thats a concern. The other thing that concerned me, frankly, was ron johnson talking about provocateurs and fake Trump Supporters. It reminds me of the old country song, who are you going to believe, me or your old lying eyes . All the people there, obviously, werent violent and werent interested in violence, but that doesnt mean that the people who led it werent there because they were brought there by their president who told them this is what you have to do to stop the transfer of power. Senator, one of the questions we have been asking this morning is about this four and a half hour fap in the time the request was made for the National Guard to the time they arrived. Frankly, arrived when the worst of the attack was over. What did you learn about why that delay was so long and why the National Guard wasnt there sooner . Well, first, it is still unclear yesterday as to actually when that requested was made. And you have to understand that the National Guard doesnt come by themselves, necessarily. And they were asked not to come to the capitol, at least thats my understanding a day or two before because of the concern about having troops surrounding the capitol ironically. The very visuals that were now seeing with this huge fence and troops every 10 feet. So there will be two more hear information this series, and i believe that the next one will focus on that very question why did it take so long . One of the suggestions i made in my questioning yesterday was there ought to be a contingency plan on the shelf of exactly how this thing can work. One of the problems in the reaction was a failure of imagination, a failure to imagine what could happen and there should have been automatt heres what you call, heres what the time frame is, heres how it comes down. We will have questions about that as we go forward. So far i havent seen any evidence there was interference from the white house to slow down the National Guard or anything like that, but were going to ask those questions. I sincerely doubt that thats the case. And it does take time to deploy. But youre right. That was one of the gaps. The real question is, you know, why didnt the Capitol Police understand the nature of the threat . There was this very serious threat from the norfolk fbi office that just apparently didnt get to the leadership of the Capitol Police. That came in the night before. Senator mike barnacles with a question for you. Mike . Senator, there has been proposal to establish a proposed Commission Like the 9 11 commission and it is supposedly going to get to be a 9 11 to probe the questions you were just talking about. But in this day and age, do you think it is possible to have a Bipartisan Commission . Thats a really good question. I thought peter outlined it very well earlier in the program. If its not a Bipartisan Commission of people who are widely respected on all sides, its not going to work. The whole idea is to produce an idea ta the American People can say, okay, this is what happened. Here are the facts. This is a difficult situation. September 11th, there was a little bit of whose fault is it, but it didnt have the part son overtones this situation does. One of the things you are going to have to look into is what is the responsibility of the president of the United States . And would this have happened but for his actions in the months preceding and then the morning of the event. That obviously by definition is a very partisan issue. So the question you ask is a good one. I think a better result might be if congress could act in a bipartisan way to try to get to the bottom of it. Yesterday wasnt a terribly encouraging start, but im not sure a commission appointed by Mitch Mcconnell, nancy pelosi, Chuck Schumer is going to necessarily have the nonpartisan chops that you want in order to get a convincing answer, if you will. Senator angus king, thank you very much for being on this morning. It is great to see you. The events i witnessed on january 6th was the worst attack on Law Enforcement in our democracy that i have seen in our entire career. The fact of the matter is, this didnt seem like an armed insurrection to me. I witnessed insurgents Beating Police officers. These criminals came prepared for war. If that was a planned armed insurrection, man, you really are a bunch of idiots. I think there was sufficient ord nation with this attack. The former capitol place chief laying waste to the theories that a United States center continues to spew. Ahead, we will hear more of the testimony from the police who were defending the capitol from Trump Rioters on january 6th. Biden needs to pick a new person to run the Budget Office who has not promoted wild Conspiracy Theories and not barbed people on both sides of the aisle. It is a nice point. It is a good point to make. Definitely should not happen. John kor than supported a day for do we have to even state this . For well over 40 years that promoted the most damaging Conspiracy Theories i would say in modern america, perhaps in the United States. If you take the Conspiracy Theories about covid and widespread voter fraud, some of his federal appointees said wasnt true, something the United States Supreme Court said wasnt true and john cornan wasnt clear about that. It is okay if the president of the United States spreads those wild Conspiracy Theories, undermines americans faith in democracy more than Vladimir Putins lies about this country could ever do and just sits back quietly and smiles while he does it. It is you take what john cornan has said. You look at what ron johnson has said. We know now why ron johnsons biggest newspaper in ron johnson state said the man should resign. What a disgrace. What a disgrace to the United States senate. What a disgrace to the state of wisconsin. Theyre used to that, of course. Its Joe Mccarthys old state. And what a disgrace to the United States senate that he just keeps lying. This is kind of like i wont mention any names, but there was some people on tv shows that were 9 11 truthers. This is what ron johnson is doing. Actually, it is probably even more devastating because, again, liars like ron johnson have undermined americans faith in democracy and our most precious democratic institutions, and he keeps doing it. He did it yesterday. The clips we played coming in were from a Radio Interview where he denied it was an armed insurrection despite everything we know and have learned. Yesterday, though, he sat in that room with the former chief of Capitol Police and the former sergeant in arms of the house and senate and was lecturing them about provocateurs. People who infiltrated and otherwise peaceful demonstration. He said it with a straight face. Does he believe it . Is he that corrupt that he believes it . Or is he still willing to spew that inside his room yesterday. Unbelievable that a sitting senator, joe, would continue after he knows what happened, continue to push this lie. Well, and lets just lets just remind everybody of the conversation Kevin Mccarthy had with donald trump while the insurrection, while the sedition that josh hawley and ted cruz helped begin were coconspirators along with donald trump. Kevin mccarthy called donald trump who was gleefully watching the insurrection on his White House Television sets and mccarthy begged donald trump to call off his terrorists. Trump said back to mccarthy, he said, thats antifa. Thats not those arent my supporters, despite of course the fact they were carrying trump flags. And mccarthy yelled back at him, who the [ bleep ] do you think you are talking to . These are your people. Which donald trump then responded, well, kevin, i guess theyre more upset about the Election Loss than you are. Proving, again, that donald trump knew that was his supporters that were committing insurrection against the United States of america. And so, so the fact that even Kevin Mccarthy is shouting down donald trump begging him to call off the Terrorist Attack and trump refeuds for an additional two hours, will will, that shows that not only did Kevin Mccarthy know this, but Mitch Mcconnell knew this. Ron johnson decides hes going to keep lying about the worst attack on american democracy from the inside in 240 years of this great republics history. It is truly disgraceful. You used the right word earlier. It is disgraceful they perpetuated a lie before the election. It is disgraceful theyre lying about the attack that happened on january 6th. Yet, many continue to do and corrode our democracy. Nothing short of that. Theyre corroding our democracy by doing that. Lets talk about what was inside inside that room yesterday because it is important to sort out what happened to pierce through these lies. Top officials responsible for securing the capitol testified before congress yesterday. They blamed poor intelligence for the massive security failure, a Communications Breakdown and they blamed one another. We heard from the head of the d. C. Metro police and three others who have since resigned. The head of the Capitol Police at the time. Here is the u. S. Capitol Police Captain and former chief of Capitol Police steven sund explaining what they faced that day. At some point my right arm got wedged between rioters and the railing along the wall. A cdu sergeant pulled my right arm free and had he not im sure it would have been broken. I received chemical burns to my face that still have not healed this day. I witnessed officersing with hit to the ground. Of the multitude events i worked in my 19year career in the department, this was by far the worst of the worst. We planned for an increased level of violence at the capitol. What we got was a Military Style coordinated assault. I witnessed insurgents Beating Police officers with fists, bats, metal barricades and flag poles. These criminals came prepared for war. These people came specifically with equipment. You are bringing Climbing Gear to a demonstration. You are bringing explosives. Youre bringing chemical spray. And then also the fact we were dealing with two pipe bombs set right off the edge of our perimeter to, what i suspect, draw resources away. I think there was a significant coordination with this attack. It was first reported by the Washington Post that an fbi office in virginia warned the day before the attack that extremists were traveling to washington to war and that the intel was shared with Capitol Police, but the Security Officials who testified yesterday said they didnt see it. I actually just in the last 24 hours was informed by the department that they actually had received that report. It was received by what we call its one of our sworn members thats assigned to the joint Terrorism Task force, which is a task force with the fbi. They received it the evening of the 5th, reviewed it and then forwarded it over to an official at the Intelligence Division over at u. S. Capitol police headquarters. So you hadnt seen it yourself . No, maam. Mr. Stinger, did you get the report . No. Mr. Irving . I did not. Then there is the issue of what took the National Guard so long to get on the scene. Acting chief of d. C. Police robert conte said the first guard members didnt show up until four and a half hours after his initial request. Chief sund was pleading for the deployment of the National Guard. And in response to that, there was not an immediate yes of the National Guard. Yes, the National Guard is on the way. The response was more asking about the plan that, you know, what was the plan for the National Guard. The response was more focussed on in addition to the plan, the optics of how this looks with boots on the ground on the capitol. And my response to that was simply i was just stunned that, you know, i have officers that were out there literally fighting for their lives and, you know, were kind of going through what seemed like an exercise to really check the boxes and it was not an immediate response. Let me be clear, optics as portrayed in the media played no role whatsoever in my decisions about security. And any suggestion to the contrary is false. Safety was also paramount. We did discuss whether troops warranted in the capital. That was the issue and the collective judgment at that time was, no, the swell against did not warrant that. There is so much to go through there, miikka. But i just want to go back to the staggering number. Four and a half hours. Four and a half hours. We interviewed colin powell who was looking at his tv saying, where are is National Guard . When we were watching, we just kept asking the same thing. Where is the National Guard . Where are the reenforcements. And i think most americans. Most americans who love this country and didnt want to see the peoples house torn to shreds by terrorists and decisionists were asking the same thing. We need answers. Really yesterday all the way in and so close to the people that they were talking about killing. We really chanting. We really didnt get answers. I mean, again, whether were talking about what ron johnson was lying about yesterday and what hes continued to lie about or what were talking about with the National Guard and what leaders saw on tv that day, we have all heard the chants. We saw the nooses. We have since seen the chants hang mike pence. We knew mike pences life was in danger. The president knew mike pences life was in danger. Thats why he sent out a tweet attacking mike pence, when he knew that his family, his children and the Vice President of the United States was sitting inside the capitol. And, yet, despite this chaos that we saw, that America Saw Helplessly four hours, it was four and a half hours before the National Guard came in, before order was restored. I mean, and it was it was a long time before other Police Departments were able to come in and help. And the question, miikka, that still hasnt been answered is why. And by the way, pointing fingers at each other, thats not good enough. I hope the senate keeps after these people because members of congress were let down that day on both sides of the aisle, and americans were let down that day, that the peoples house could be defiled the way these terrorists, the way these trump terrorists defiled the peoples house. Is there anything from a policing Point Of View where we might be off or we might be being too hard on the planners and the different heads of the different sets of Security Organizations around washington . What are we missing . Youre not missing much, actually. There is a saying in american policing that the Greatest Lie In American Policing is we are communicating. Quite clearly as you have been reporting and as others have been reporting, Law Enforcement was not communicating well either before, during or even now after this event. The intelligence it was not a failure of intelligence. It was a failure of what to do with the intelligence that was there. One of the senators talked about a failure of imagination. So as this goes forward, you are going to need a National Commission that can dig into this to get that commission to form. These Senate Hearings, they provide some additional information, some additional things to discuss, but you really need a much more in depth discussion of this examination and analysis. One of the things that has now come up in this is the Secret Service. The Secret Service is working with and assuming the same intelligence. Yet, they brought the Vice President of the United States and his family to the capitol on that day. What was their analysis . What were they looking at . And why did they feel comfortable going to the capitol that day . So the idea of failure to communicate, Secret Service might have been looking at different information than the Capitol Police were looking at. The National Guard point you bring up, why wasnt the National Guard at least positioned someplace close to the capitol where if they were needed, even if it took a while for authorization, they could rapidly respond instead of coming from maryland and virginia and all these far flung harbors they had to come in from. So, commissioner, post9 11 we constantly have been reporting about chatter that Intelligence Agencies were talking about possible attacks on new york city, possible attacks on other parts of the United States. This the intel leading up to these riots, to this insurrection against the United States government on January The 6th, it wasnt it wasnt hidden beneath a bushel. It didnt take Extraordinary Technology to figure out what was going to happen on that day. All you had to go was go on twitter, go on parlor, Go On Facebook and it was all there, laid out in front of these people. There were warnings that were bouncing off of these agency heads. Is there a possibility in your mind first of all, would this have ever happened if you were running operations there . And secondly, do you think there was some people does it appear there was some people who were willfully blind to the emerging threat . I dont know about willfully blind, but maybe under the pressures of washington, d. C. The term has been used optics, the idea that the mayor of washington didnt want the National Guard to be equipped with riot gear, the people she brought in for traffic control. She made a comment to the effect that she didnt want the National Guard to be coming into the city without being controlled by the metropolitan police. There is just so many things that went wrong here. It is mind boggling. And it is hard to keep track of all the things that went wrong. The preparation for this event, thats what, as a former Law Enforcement official, i cant wrap my arms around it. There seems to be so little coordination between these agencies. They werent talking with each other. They werent communicating with each other. Its just its extraordinarily frustrating from a Law Enforcement professionals perspective. Coming up, if the military can communicate in realtime, from thousands of miles away, why couldnt Security Officials in washington who were just a few blocks apart . Well bring in Claire Mccaskill to the conversation next on morning joe. Limu emu doug hey limu [ squawks ] how great is it that we get to tell everybody how Liberty Mutual customizes your Car Insurance so you only pay for what you need . I mean it. Oh, sorry. Com promo claire, you listen to the acting chief of d. C. Police in his testimony yesterday saying he was surprised by the reluctance to deploy the National Guard. So the question really at the center of this is whose reluctance . Who paused to send in the National Guard until it was too late because, remember, by the time the national got there at 5 40 p. M. , there was cleanup duty. They cleared the capitol and the riot was over. The president of the United States is the commander in chief. That goes through the pentagon, would have to be approved there. We need to know who sat on that question for four hours. There is no doubt that the commander in chief complicated this. I hope that the Armed Services committee has a hearing also and brings in everyone who touched this on january 6th. And i know the question i would ask of the guy who was delaying sending the National Guard if i were still on the committee. I would say, were you watching tv . I mean, this is not like theyre getting communication from a far flung battlefield where nobody knows whats going on. This was happening in front of all of our eyes. We were seeing it. And the notion that the pressure they felt is a big deal. Whoever delayed the response should be relieved of their command. There is no question about that because there will be a trial. And i hope that either the committees that met yesterday and began to sort this out bring in all of the people. Ill tell you the other thing, guys, this is going to really push. Can you imagine how quickly this would have occurred if d. C. Was a state, if the mayor of the d. C. Had the power to deploy the National Guard . Imagine how quickly this would have happened if this wasnt something that had to be decided by 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue instead of the people that run the city. So it is really unfortunate. And i hope, i hope, they figure it out. By the way, if the fbi gives you a piece of paper that says war and Capitol Building in the same document, i would suggest to go to the very top with a command immediately. Im just saying. Joining us now washington anchor for bbc world news America Katty Kay and journalist claire shipman. They are here with the latest book in their best selling confidence code series. Its entitled living the confidence code. Real girls, real stories, real confidence. The book tells the stories of 30 young girls each pursuing their passions while trying to build their own brand of confidence. Here are a few of those young female voices highlighted in the book. Im 21 years old. Im a student, author and founder of campaign. Im genesis, and im 14. Im an Animal Rights activist and speaking out gives me confidence. Im 17. Im an athlete. I love it. All right. Katty and claire, i love this series from the very beginning. It has changed so many lives. Katty, i will start with you. What is it from these series that helped you crack the confidence code. What we wanted was girls who, in some cases, have done extraordinary big things. And then sometimes, you know, small things. There was a girl who was bullied in middle school and kept silent about it for months before she eventually got the colonel to tell somebody about it. And the process these girls go through of taking a risk, often struggling, often failing and then building their confidence to get to some kind of goal, that is what we wanted to show. We realize that girls learn best through stories. Were all story tellers. We know that stories tell and inform people and girls respond to that and they learn really well when those stories are stories about the girls, and thats why we wrote this book. You put together a lot of data for your books to back the point for the need for women to develop confidence especially at an early age. The one thing that just made me say ug is this. Between the ages of 8 and 14, as girls confidence levels drop by 30 , what is happening . We found this when we were writing our book for women, actually, because so many women still struggle with this. But that seems to be the turning point for girls. And a couple of things happen. First of all, hormones kick in. Testosterone is a huge boost for risk taking. Girls dont have as much as that. Estrogen boosts our eq. So we become focussed on what other people think. And there is often this good girl thing. And i talk about it a lot. Girls are much better able to mind, color in the lines, and we as parents and teachers reward them for that. And suddenly at puberty that becomes all consuming. We want to please, and we decide taking risks is too frightening. We dont want to fail. It really does frighten, especially in the professional world. Women like to follow the rules and they become very uncomfortable when other donts. Lets bring in erin. Ill let you take the next question. Miikka, it is good to be with you and it is great to be with you katty and claire. Congratulations on this book and also the oped in the New York Times about the importance of imperfect role models. Girls learn from stories. Even as fully formed women, right, we want to put our best foot forward. We do fear failure, and we do care about what others think and helping to kind of break that comes with hearing from people who didnt necessarily get it all right. We kept going and what that journey really looked like. I really am curious from both of you about a few things that you talk about in this confidence code and particularly in the midst of this pandemic and what the role of the pandemic has played in confidence of girls and what lessons you learned, if any, that maybe surprised you or were even counter intuitive about the pandemic, confidence and what that can mean for girls and our new normal on the other side of this. Thats a great question. Thanks for joining. Such a fan. Love to be on with you. Appreciate it. You know, were so glad this is coming out right now because girls are experiencing, as you can imagine, a confidence hit. I mean, teens in general, kids in general are a wash in anxiety and stress. For girls, some of that anxiety, perfectionism, being in their heads really fights against the ability to do things, take action, build more confidence. We found a couple of things. And we talked to a lot of other girls in the book. First of all, it is a chance even though we all have our kids on social media too much. It is a chance in taking risks reaching out to different communities on social media or trying to think about things you want to launch and you might have to do it in a different way, in a virtual way. And i think there is a Silver Lining to the fact in the pandemic for some of these girls that all bets are off, right . The standards are gone, if you will. Im doing a tv show here from my mess is office. Imagine for girls they can suddenly feel a little more liberated from the expectations society places on them. So trying to talk to your own kids about now might be the perfect time to try to try that thing you have always wanted to start because the world is looking at everything in a different way. Social media has been such a nightmare for developing minds, especially for young girls as they are trying to live up to unbelievable standards and ideas that are put out there. Were going to talk to you both, katty and claire, about how you are going to turn that on its head with instagram. But first we mentioned an opinion piece titled imperfect girls make perfect role models. You mite female role models are having a moment. While we are still far from gender parody, it is an incredible moment for girls who facing pandemic limitations may be especially eager for a glimmer of motivation and hope. Role models inspire by showing us what is actually possible. But the notion of good role models need an update especially when it comes to girls or the steady gleams of achievement. In addition to role models our extensive work on girls and confidence has found that what girls could really use are work in progress models. And i totally get it, claire. I mean, you know what, were always a work in progress. And, yet, there is this idea of perfection. And my god, if instagram and Everything Else out there that theyre on doesnt feed into that in a very negative way. I mean, its a struggle. You know, i see it sometimes with my own daughter on tiktok, on instagram and just looking at people posting what always seems to be the perfect life. There are ways to connect in a positive way, and there are ways to show vulnerability and sort of a real authenticity on social media, too. You have to big around a little bit. Thats why were trying with instagram, as you mentioned, to launch something on instagram reels, which is girls detailing a day in my confident life. But in a gritty way, right . Showing their own confidence hacks. Were trying to make this a call to action and get girls to post the real things that get them through the day, whether it is singing to themselves in the mirror or, you know, eating bad cereal or reaching out to a friend. We want to sort of see that. But if we dont show the bumps along the way and talk about the values behind a certain role model, were not really connecting to them. I have a daughter who is right in the wheel house from those books and has grown up with them. Im interested on the other side of it, which you guys talk about, from the parents. What can a dad and what can a mom do as they watch from that 8 to 14year range start to have some of that selfconfidence be eroded, whether it is looking at things on social media, everything you detail. What should i be doing . What should a mother be doing to help a daughter through that time . I mean, part of it, willie, is exactly what you are doing now because our reporting says dads are easier at spotting this confidence drop than moms are. Whereas, all these dads saying to us and our research as born that out, whats happened to my daughter up until the age of 8. She could conquer the world and suddenly raising her hand in class seems like a challenge. There are a couple of things we found and it is really interesting in this book how many girls reached out to adults when they were getting to a hurdle or when they had a failure and often they were reaching out to dads as well as to moms and people outside of the family. So i think part of it is walking your daughter through the downside of a risk. Your daughter wants to try for the school play, lets say. And shes absolutely terrified of doing so. Everybody is going to laugh at her. And the world will fall apart if it falls. Your role as a dad or as a parent is to show her that the risk is so much smaller than her kind of worrying mind is making it out to be. 90 of the time, the risk of anything that we want to do as girls and as women is smaller than we are making it out to be in our brain. The worst thing that happens, she doesnt get the part in the play. Miikka talks about this all the time. The worst thing that happen ifs you asked for a pay raise and it goes wrong and you dont get a pay raise. Thats the worst thing that will happen. But there is so often an upside as well. For parents, talking your daughter through the risk, getting them back from ka tas tra fiezing, talking to them about failure, normalizing failure. All of this book is about normalizing failure. These girls have struggled and failed. Thats why we love these stories. Katty, when you talk to the women in the audience. Usually it is 500 to a thousand of them all trance fixed when you talk about faking confidence. How one banking of a confidence moment leads to another to another, whether its speaking up in a meeting, approaching your boss about something, raising your handment and you have taken it to the next level with instagram. I love this because instagram is usually where you lose all your confidence, especially young girls looking at people posting all these unrealistic pictures of happiness or whatever it is. And you have got this a day in your confident life where you can sort of bank it on instagram. Can you explain it . Yeah. This is instagram reels, which is the video version of instagram. Yes. A little like tiktok was doing. But you go through your day and you show the times in your day where you do something that gets you through. It is not about looking perfect. It is not about how many likes you have on your feed. It is about doing something that gives you a confidence boost. And i think our message on confidence, and this is where instagram has been so great as a partner for us, is bursting that perfect thing that girls are always trying for and being normal and accessible and real and building your confidence through taking action. That is the key. Thats the partnership with instagram. Erin . That is a great point. I look forward to participating in this challenge. Maybe i will make my reels debut on there. Listen, i love the representation in this book. Its taking a risk, right . It is absolutely taking a risk. And i guarantee you it will be imperfect. I can promise you that. I want to talk about the representation that is in this book, claire. Im hoping that you can also talk about the confidence code in lbgtq youth. We have a story up right now on a new gallup poll that says more young people than ever before are identifying as lgbtq. I wonder if you can speak to what you learned about confidence among young girls who identify as lbgtq . We were determined to get a broad swath. We really have girls from all over the world, all different races, ethnicities. And a couple of the girls we talked with went through either realizing they needed to come out, understanding their gender identity in the process of growing up. There is a girl we focus on who became a transgender also in a wheelchair model, and shes just an amazing story. And great authenticity and vulnerability about how hard it was to reveal her identity to her parents and what she was feeling and how she got through that. So what we have found is that for girls there is often the first hurdle, right . They feel less confident. Theyre people pleasing. When you add on a layer of being different in another way, in any sort of community. Way, in any sort of community, if you feel youre in a minority in terms of your race, ethnicity or your gender identity, its sort of the double confidence whammy, right . So its an extra struggle. What we found though, especially looking at aron and jamie, they detail how they worked through this and they did what catty and mika were talking about a minute ago, they learned to bank confidence. The confidence they had as they started to reveal themselves and be authentic and find, by the way, some of the keys for this are finding the people who are your real supporters and friends to gird you as you make this move. They are making confidence for the other challenge, the environment things they want to work on or other issues. Theyre great stories. The new book is living the confidence code real girls, real stories, real confidence. Young girls and women can share a day in their confident life, just post to reals using confidencecode. Katty kay and claire shipman, thank you both. I might trial that, im nervous, but ill work on my confidence. Digger deeper into this confidence at knowyourvolume.
