Welcome to weekends with alex witt. Here is whats happening past 2 00 p. M. Eastern. First is Breaking News in the covid pandemic. Nearly half a Million People have died in the United States from coronavirus. It is by far the highest death toll in the world. The official count, 499,906 deaths and more than 28. 1 million confirmed cases across this country. The first 100,000 deaths were recorded by may of last year. The u. S. Reaching 300,000 deaths by december. January saw the death toll rise to 400,000 and in just about a month, we have added another 100,000. Dr. Anthony fauci today called the death toll historic. Its terrible. It is historic. We havent seen anything even close to this for well over 100 years since the 1918 pandemic of influenza. Its stunning when you lookts look at the in your opinions. Its true. This is a devastating pandemic and its historic. Its been just shy of a year since the very first u. S. Covid death was reported in the new york time. That day was february 29th, 2020. Lets go first to new york city where the Vaccine Supply is dwindling to less now than 1,000 doses. Thats just the first doses out there. Lets go to cori. This has to be a bit of a setback. Im curious how that will shake up the city and the reaction from the folks in line behind you. Reporter this is especially concerning as we hit that milestone because as we know, the Vaccine Effort is going to help slow the spread. Its going to help slow the increasing amount of deaths we keep seeing from this crisis. Its just a reminder were still climbing out of this crisis. When it comes to some six million vaccine doses that were delayed due to winter weather, new york feeling the brunts of it because their Vaccine Effort vs been ramped up. Folks in line are mostly getting their second dose vaccine. As i pointed out or as you pointed out, that first dose is under 1,000. They have really been at a stand still here in the city of new york. They are continuing. They have about a little less than 95,000 of the second shot dose shots. Still able to be administered which is why we have such an active day out here today. I did speak with one woman who told me it was extremely difficult for her to get an appointment but she was so thankful she did. Listen to what else she told me. I was on the computer at about 2 00 a. M. When i got it. I also got one for my mother who is 95. That was about 1 30 in the morning. My husband became eligible a couple of days after that. We were able to do it during the daytime. We got appointments. It was a challenge but because we have access and we understand how to use the computer. I dont think if a person did not have access or was not as computer literate that they would have an easy time. That needs to improve. Reporter she brings up an excellent point. This idea of Equitiablely Distributing the vaccine not only across all age groups but across all communities especially under served communities who need that vaccine and have seen the hard hit numbers. When it comes to how will we make up for this in the city of new york. Some 35,000 delayed appointments. They have two Mass Vaccination Sites opening in state of new york. Those are going to get some of those vaccines that were delayed for this past week that are going to be coming in starting tomorrow. They are going to increase their number of appointments that they have. The appointments that got delayed, those will be surging next week to try to make up for that extra delay that we see. Okay. Thank you manhattan. Lets turn to washington. Whats happening with the relief bill and where do the lawmakers stand on it . Reporter some key procedural hurdles that are expected this week, tomorrow the House Budget Committee will have a vote on this 1. 9 trillion dollar package advaning it so what they hope will be a full house vote by the end of the week. Once that passes, which is what democrats expect given their control of the chamber, it then goes to the senate where we have the larger question about what kind of bipartisan support it may or may not have. President biden has been very clear that he doesnt really care how this passes as long as it passes and thats because of a midmarch dead liep really a couple of weeks from now when Unemployment Benefits are set to expire. This is why they want to get this through. The timing is really critical. They are hoping this time line aligns with what the president promised to accomplish in these first 100 days. You see tomorrow a key vote and by the end of the week, thats their hope. There are other questions here about what may have to be taken out of the bill. 1. 9 trillion is something that has made republicans very wary and very nervous to support it. Thats why you had a mix of them this morning on the sunday shows talking about those concerns but democrats and the president himself have argued the need is more urgent than ever and what would you have me take out. That was one of President Bidens key points when selling the package on the road a couple of days ago in michigan. Take a listen here specifically to some democratic and republican concerns and arguments for getting this across the finish line in a timely fashion. I think its the responsible thing to do. This is not about the politics of democrat or republican. When people are dying, when people are being evicted, there is no Party Affiliation with that. The American People need this. You dont have to be a good pollster in washington to say would you like the federal government to send you a 3500 check. Of course the answer will be yes. If you say do you want us to borrow that money from your children, i think their answer might be a lot different. Its the right time to give working americans a raise. Reporter pointing to this increase in the minimum wage over the next four years. If that passes as i stands, those direct Stimulus Payments of 1400 of people earning 757,000 and couples earning 150,000, and also some help to small businesses. You just talked about that incredibly somber milestone, 500,000 lives lost to the coronavirus pandemic. Thats why President Biden is arguing this needs to happen now. We can expect both him and the white house to mark this horrific milestone in the days to come. This is the first time but definitely not the last time that were going to see lawmakers digging into what happened on january 6th. Spervegly what happened in terms of security measures that werent taken that perhaps allowed this day to be as deadly and as traumatic has it was. As we expect to see this joint hearing going forward, were going to see top law enforce m officials, including the top three Security Officials who were in charge of various parts of the capitol complex during the insurrection and resigned in disgrace. This is expected to be quite tense. Not because it was traumatic moment to watch on television but so many of these lawmakers they were here at the capitol complex that day. That being said we saw how that kind of personal trauma played out during the impeachment hearings just a few weeks ago. It really does still depend when you have a d or an r next to your name. It really impacts the way that you look at what happened on january 6th and who was responsible. Look no further than two lawmakers on the air this morning. Congressman Steve Scalise and congressman adam schiff. Two very different ways of looking at it. Take a listen. Every United States senator who voted to impeach President Trump who talked about things like go and fight like hell and other things like that youre saying he doesnt bear responsibility . When President Trump has denounced what happened. Not withstanding the fact that donald trump incited a violent attack on our capitol. These Republican Leaders are still in his thrall. Reporter there isnt the only key hearing that were looking at this week. Were also expecting to see some important posts for the Biden Administration begin their Confirmation Hearings and for Merrick Garland who is up for being Attorney General and january 6th will be important when it comes to garlands Confirmation Hearings. We expect he will Say Something on january 6th and the role the Department Of Justice will play in continuing to prosecute the insurrectionists here on that day. Listen to what part of garland is expected to say. He says if confirmed, i will supervise the prosecution of White Supremacists and others who stormed the capitol on january 6th. A heinous attack that sought to disrupt a corner stone of our democracy, the peaceful transfer of power to a newly elected government. Getting a hearing five years after, even a hearing when hes been no, Maam International airported for the Supreme Court by obama. Thank you so much for that. Lets go to Breaking News out of texas because people have been basic affected by this historic winter storm. They can apply for help through fema. Millions of residents still dont have running water. This is a week since the storm struck. Tens of thousands remain without power. Volunteers are ramping up efforts to provide safe drinking water. Very hard hit there. What have been people been telling you about this experience for them this week . Reporter people here are exhausted. Were still under a Boil Water Advisory in houston. Some folks are angry because they living in homes or apartment complexes where there is no water coming through their pipes at all. In response, the city has launched this massive water distribution effort and our team has been on the ground. Wa we heard from people there, they show up and they are exhausted. You can see it in their eyes. They with weary, angry in many cases. To give you a sense of the level of urgency for them, one of these sites opened at 9 30 a. M. And people started lining up and sitting in their car at 5 30 a. M. In the cold. Had their kids packed in the back with them through this process. I want you to meet one of the mothers that i spoke to for a while while we were on the ground at one of these sites yesterday. She has a 2monthold baby and a toddler. She told me that she had to breastfeed her child while she herself was struggling to find water and said she felt like she was dying of thirst. I want you to hear the story. It was scary. Our apartment, we lost power monday night. I kind of woke up and everything was dark. I thought thats not normal. It was super cold. I literally like touched my babys face and he was freezing. When i picked him up he have sweating underneath because i had him pretty bundled. Reporter residents have a bit of good news to look forward to right now. Coming from both the federal and state levels. The federal level we have this new Disaster Declaration that will allow residents that have damage in their home from pipes bursting to Reach Tout The Federal Government for loans. If youre an individual or family that feels your living situation is not safe right now, you can reach out for temporary housing. At the state level, Governor Greg Abbott is working with a group of bipartisan lawmakers to address a different financial crisis after this storm. Many texans are reporting they are seeing astronomical bills for their utilities due to the spike in the energy market. Despite the many differences these parties have in texas, these politicians have come together and decided texans should not be left to foot that bill, alex. Extraordinary story youre giving us. Thank you very much. It happens suddenly without warning and with plenty of malice. Whats being done to stop the rise in attacks on Asian Americans . Thats next. Attacks on Asian Americans . Thats next. Wait. I want a bucket of chicken. I want. Its the easiest because its the cheesiest. Kraft. For the win win. [ ] when you have diabetes, managing your blood sugar is crucial. Try boost Glucose Control. The patented blend is clinically shown to help manage blood sugar levels. Boost Glucose Control products contain high quality protein and key nutrients to support immune health. Try boost. Turning now to the new violent, unprovoked attacks on Asian Americans. This disturbing Video Sending shock wave across the country. Theres a lot of it, too much. Many of the victims are elderly. They are shoved to the ground and suffer seriously injuries. Antiasian crimes have surged 19 . Joining me now, noel cantana. Kim is writing a book on solidarity in the black lives matter era. Im welcoming you both. Noel, im going to start with you. Im going to show some of the images from after your attack. They are painful to see. Im sure its difficult for you to go back and see what happened. Im told this happened on a new york city subway. Tell your story. I take the l train going to work. The train is Standing Room only. I stood by the door, on the other side of the train. When the train stopped, i bents forward. A man stood beside me. Just then a few minutes later he started kicking my bag and then i thought my bag was did you recollect disturbing him so i moved over towards my bag and pit my bag in front of me so it went touch him or disturb him in any way. He started kicking it again. When i moved and thats the time that the train stopped for the next one. When the door opened he came forward and slashed me. I thought he have going to punch me but i didnt feel anything. When i saw his hand with a box cutter and when i saw the people around the train in the Train Station was shocked, i put my hands on my face and i look. There was a lot of blood. I asked for help but nobody helped me, not even counting the Train Operator that was emergency in the train. Instead of bleeding inside the train going to the next station, i decided to go out of the train and look for help. I saw three people there. The lady was calling on her cell phone, probably 911. A man cleaning and he said, sit down. I couldnt sit down because i need help. I dont think the help is coming. I need to walk on the subway from end to end just to go to the booth because i knew theres somebody that could help me. Surely there was a lady there. I said help me, please. Call 911. She was shocked but she called 911. Then the police came. Im on the verge of tears listening to this. Its just wrong. You did nothing wrong. I can only imagine, kim, you have immersed yourself in all of this. What is it like to see these images and hear these stories like noels . How many more like this have you heard . Yeah, noel, i want to really thank you for your story. I see myself. I see my community. I see my mom in these really vicious accounts of asian and Asian Americans being attacked. Its happening across the country. Its really frightening and it really raises the stakes on how we need Community Based and Community Oriented solutions so we can keep each other safe. We have very sobering moment we need to talk about and thaes the fact that across this country we have now hit 500,000 dead americans as a result of the covid19 virus. Its a stunning point to have reached. Its not taken that long to reach the last 200,000 numbers. Thats opinion over the last two months. The u. S. Reaching this point and also more than 28. 2 million cases. I want to bring in msnbc contributor dr. Patel and have you put in milestone in perspective. So many emotions to creeping up. 500,000. Thats about 1 in 67 americans who have died. We probably could have prevented a good number of these. I think whats harder to imagine is i was thinking about the 1918 pandemic and there were about 617,000 deaths. We thought surely our medicine has advanced. Well never face anything like that and here we are. My children, my grand children, there are generations that will say what a failure in some ways our approach to this pandemic has been. I think just listening to noels story, that is defining what were doing now. I really am hopeful. Theres one way to be hopeful is were starting to see some light. A third of those deaths were in Nursing Homes and Long Term Care facilities. Those are populations where we are now seeing the deaths plummet because of the vaccine. We try really hard. I know. Its okay to stop and say this doesnt feel like america and this feels like were in a time capsule but we need to figure out how to help the people whose lives have been lost and the millions who have been touched by it move forward. We do need to commemorate them and never forget. 100 . Im going to put a positive spin on all this. We are seeing the efficacy of the vaccines and can you give us a projected time in your gut. I know you dont have the statistics and the evidence yet to say when this will all end but at what point life will return to some semblance of normality across this country . In fact, around the world. Normal may be new defined. We may be Wearing Masks for some time but how long do you think it will take for the vaccines to take the effect we will be thinking we can breathe a sigh of relief. Were past the crunch time . I do think by this summer well see our friends and family be able to gather together. We may not have mass concerts and big Sporting Events with full capacity but we are going to be able to see our loved ones, our friends. Well be able to get together especially as a majority of people are vaccinated. That will start the feel like normal. Well see workplaces opening up. Well certainly have schools open. Once we have a regular pattern, traffic on the highways, day care open, Kids At School laughing on a playground. That will feel like normal and thats coming. It is. To anybody who is thinking about not getting the vaccine, talk to someone, ask questions because this is our shot. This is our chance and normal is around the corner. I am looking forward to a Holiday Season where we are going to be able to hug people and embrace and not feel there kind of fear that i think a lot of us are feeling. Do you ever encounter people still who feel like covid19 is a remote concept for them . Aside from having to up end the way they run their daily lives. They are like i dont know who died from covid19 or has gotten covid19. Is it still possible to have that out there . I know people who have died. I know people who have lived through it and may not be recovered. Are there people who are out there who can say, this doesnt affect me . There are. We have a psychological phrase for that. They really are in denial. If they have been infected, if they had to get through it, they say its not so bad. I think a lot of us in order to cope have been in denial because its so hard to face these deaths and this reality. There are still people, the ones who dont believe in masks, even if they know someone who has died, they dont think they play a role in helping the decrease. We have vaccines and the ability to decrease the virus activity. Not eliminate it. Its people who really dont believe in vaccines, who dont believe in talking about how people get infected. Thats going to remain with us and they really are in denial. I want to alert everybody to what they are seeing skroling on the bottom of their screen. Well be updating state by state the number of the deceased due to covid19. Look at your state. If you dont know where the in your opinions are, take a look. Were starting there with alabama. It will scroll across. Well up date it all day long. Look at the extraordinary numbers. Almost 50,000 alone in state of california. Dr. Patel, thank you so much. Its a sobering concept. I thank you for your expertise and all the stats and experience you bring in. Thank you dr. Patel for that. Very quickly, i want to go back, we heard your story. Y quick and its unbelievable. Kim, going forward, what can we do to try to keep this kind of attack its unbelievable the kind of attacks that have been put on the Asian American community here. What can we do . Its more than just about see something, Say Something. I know we heard Actress Olivia Munch and talking about that. What can we do as a Greater Community . Yeah, you know, i look to a place like oakland, california with tremendous hope and for a lot of inspiration. What were seeing is Grass Roots Groups creating Community Safety programs. Asian pacific and environmental network, Aapi Women League are spearheading efforts to accompany seniors through china town. If youre like my mom and really worried about going to the atm, someone will go with you. If you are like the folks in new york who are just walking through public space and an up tick in antiasian violence is a reality for you, there will be someone there to stand by you. These kinds of programs are exactly what we need right now. I hope that they are up and running everywhere and continue to develop. Kim, thank you so much. Noel, thank you so much, sir, for sharing your story with us. Courage as you move forward. We appreciate you. We have Reverend Al Sharpton next. Well be back in just a minute. N next well be back in just a minute g, part of the team that built 5g right, the only one from americas most reliable network. We designed our 5g to make the things you do every day better. With oscar mayer deli fresh its not just a sandwich, far from it. Its a reason to come together. Its a taste of something good. A taste we all could use right now. So lets make the most of it. And make every sandwich count. With oscar mayer deli fresh oh, you think this is just a Community Center . And make every sandwich count. No. Its way more than that. Cause when you hook our community up with the internet. Boom look at ariana, crushing virtual class. Jamol, chasing that college dream. Michael, doing something crazy. This is the place where we can show the world what we can do. Comcast is partnering with 1000 Community Centers to create wifienabled lift zones, so students from lowincome families can get the tools they need to be ready for anything. Oh were ready. The numbers youre looking at, staggering to comprehend when you think on February 29th Of Last year, almost one year ago, we had reached the first covid19 related death in this country. Here we are less than one year later, more than half a million of us, fellow americans have died as a result of covid19. Its a sobering milestone. We reached in last five or six minutes ago. You look at that ticker at the bottom. Were running through every single state in the country and were going to be up dating those so you know exactly where your state stands. We have reached the 500,000 mark of our fellow americans who have died as a result of covid19. We also have some new questions today about whether the nypd and the fbi played a role in the assassination of malcolm x. Theres a newly released Death Bed Confession letter. Its from Raymond Woods who claims lfs Advertise Job to infiltrate Civil Rights Group and he was in the ballroom at the time of the assassination. It was 56 years ago today. Details of that letter were made public by his cousin. Ray told me not to let him take this to his grave, but to please wait until he passed away to come forward with this information. This letter helps me to understand the pain and guilt that ray felt for the last 55 years. He conspired to help the nypd assassinate malcolm x. Malcolm x daughters are calling on the manhattan da to look into the new claims. The nypd reacted with this statement. They initiated a review and prosecution that resulted in two convictions for the murder of malcolm x. The nypd provided all records to that case. The Department Remains kmitsed to assist with the review in any way. Our offices review of this matter is active and ongoing. Nbcs Pete Williams reached out to the fbi for comment but we have not heard from the agency. Joining me now is Reverend Al Sharpton. We got some stuff to get to. These claims are hard to verify but what do you make of them today . Well, this is something that many of malcolm xs family has thought and feared for years. I was only nine years old when malcolm was killed. Ive got to know his widow well. Shes god mother of my daughters. She always said that she felt that they could not have assassinated malcolm without Law Enforcement cooperation. In his own known throughout the civil rights movement, dr. King and others of all kinds of Assassination Plots and theres fear even to this day, that many of us involved in civil rights have had unfair scrutiny and unfair activity. I think that for this to come forward now where nephew bringing almost Death Bed Confession is something that cannot be ignored. If the d. A. Reopen the case of the assassination of malcolm x, this has a lot of weight to a lot of us wondering what exactly happened 50 some odd years ago. Lets talk politics. You heard Steve Scalise still wont say that joe biden won the election fair and square and now donald trump will be speaking at cpac. What does this tell you about the Republican Party . It tells me at best there is a division, divide. A real war of which way the party is going to go. At worst, that donald trump is still the predominant leader of the Republican Party to the point where some republicans have taken a loss of any grip on reality. For scalise and anyone else toll still be reluctant to say joe biden is the duly elected president when joe biden won by Seven Million votes and only god knows what donald trump may say when he goes next weekend and speaks. I think its scary that we have so many people that claim to be conseratives to be the disrupters of what this republic is supposed to stand for. We hit 500,000 deaths due to the coronavirus. Whats youre reaction to that given the way that the black community in this country has been lit so hard by it . The disproportionate impact on the black community in terms of the deaths and the testing, it gives the real horrific picture of the social landscape of this country that people of color have had the most, been inundated with the most bad health care, Health Care Deserts and this brought it out. The fact that when you think about if a year ago the present, former president had taken seriously the warnings and we got on top of this earlier, maybe we woultd not be looking at anywhere near these amount of deaths and infections. I think even as i look at what could have happened and should have happened, we muts tackle it now and that is what i think the biden and Harris Administration has tried to do with the mass distribution of the vaccinations. Many of us have been under them. A lot of that not being equally distributed which they are responding to. We were told it would go away. Half a million lives later, loo at where we are. This is an atrocity that i dont believe had to happen. Amen to that. I want to celebrate black History Month with you. I want you to give me your hero. If theres a particular book that speaks to the times were in and if theres a movie or documentary. Just give me all these good points and we can take that and run with it. The new documentary that professor Henry Lewis Gates came out on the black church explains a lot of that side of the black community. People ought to fry to look at that. It was just on pbs last week and i think that if i were to recommend a book, i would recommend the last book of dr. King, where do we go from here, chaos or community. It not only talks about the movement that change the social landscape of america but forecast where we need to go from there. Even though it was written in 1968, you read it like it was written yesterday. That sounds compelling. Thank you so must have. Lets see you got 2 15 until you have to be on the air. Those feelings are isolation, depair, mourning, loneliness. The film is land. Robin right is the star and first time director. It follows her character who cant cope with a devastating tragedy in her family. She seeks solitude in an abandoned cabin in the wilds of wyoming when winter leaving her starving. A stranger finds her and nurses her back to health. How did you find me . I was on a hunt and i noticed on my way by here there was chimney smoke. Like any cabin will have there time of year. Then on my way back, there was no smoke. Why are you helping me . You were in my path. Im so glad to talk with you. I think that was one of the most beautiful exchanges in the entire film. I want to ask you about what was written in town and wanted to written in town country. It calls this film tailor made for this moment. Due agree . Sleuthly. Thanks for having me here. I couldnt agree more because, you know, over the last four years, its been a little too crazy, if you ask me. And weve been in the encapsulated mode for many, many years. What i mean by that is we we dont really care for others as much as we should. So this film, when we bring this film to life, it talks about empathy, and human resilience, and redemption, its something that we all need. Yeah. For sure. You know, i have shared with my friends how incredibly powerful this film and this story overall was for me, and yet there is very little dialogue. I mean its an amazing and admirable acting feat to communicate this deep emotion so clearly, being relatively silent, for the most part, between you and your character. You play miguel. Edie is Robin Wrights character. Why was the silence between you so important to the story . What did it actually reveal about you . That is a wonderful point, because, yes, thats one of the thing that we love about this film. And thats one of the things that hooked me when i read it, that with so, you know, little words, you can say so much. Uhhuh. And sometimes when two strangers, when two entirely different people meet in the end of the world, you know n the last corner of the world, up in those mountains, they dont really need to say much, you know, to care for each other. And in order for you to help someone u need to be generous, yes, but you need to be extra generous to be open and receive that help. Thats true. Im curious about the filming process. I understand you filmed in alberta, canada. It was stunning, stunning vistas there. What was it like for you . You are a selfdescribed city boy. What was it like to work in the wilderness. You said you had done many things that you had never done about . Like what . What had you never done . Thats right, alex. We actors, we get into many different things. Everything i know and everything i am is because i am an actor. Because of the many films i have made, i have become an expert on different subject matters. And i have acquired some great skills. I am not only a city boy, but a tropical fish. So you can only imagine what it is to be under that weather for a tropical fish. And if you put a tropical fish in the arctic, it will crack, like an ice cube. And so that was challenging. But also, the fact that Mother Nature plays a key role here you said that perfectly. Because its another element. Its an extra character in the story. And it defines the story and the characters. It shapes us. And Mother Nature dictated the way we shot the film. You know, we were playing along with her. Because she was so moody and it would change from one day to another. Some days because we cover four seasons in the story. Uhhuh. Some days it would be beautifully pristine, and clear skies, and summery, or springy. You know . And then it will be like winter the morning after, you know, like four feet of snow. So lets go into winter scenes. So it was very crazy. And then we were trained very nicely by a real mountain guy who taught us how to do everything, how to survive out there, from fishing to hunting, to skinning a deer, how to store it. Building traps and chopping wood, which is not as easy as it looks. I bet. And many other things. You know, thats what you need to go for when you are facing a role. Clearly, you have probably never skinned a deer before. Im sure that was a Novel Concept something to learn. I get it, city boy gone all to the wilderness. Right. Damien, i was reading about you and i followed your career over the last decade or so, i think you were the perfect guy to play this character. And you have said you played this character and you knew this character because you have been there. And i know very sadly, and i offer my condolences and wish i reached out to you two years ago when you lost your beautiful wife, stephanie. How did that kind of Anguish Factor into playing miguel . I was very lucky to be able to write a beautiful article on dateline thanks to Michael Fleming who invited me to write several different things. And i wanted to stress the fact that this is a very, very serious subject party that has to do with many different things. But Sleep Deprivation can lead a human being into a very difficult dark and dangerous place. Of course deeper than what we have right now. But i can say that when i approach my characters, i always try to give whats in the paper that i can relate to. I rarely use my own private experiences into that, but it certainly helped me in many different ways to heal. Yeah. And i have to thank robin for trusting miguel in my hands right in this moment. And then of course i had come from shooting The Midnight Sky with George Clooney and he was very kind to invite me to work in that film. Those two films together and being up in those beautiful mountains that view. Im telling you thats that kind of thing, damien i think is almost like therapy when you are in that kind of beauty. Listen, we are unfortunately out of time. It has been a big news day. I just want to say that i know the Academy Award nominations are coming out soon. I hope you get one. Nature heals.
