Instead, democrats stood by the totality of their presentation throughout the trial to prove their case. We believe that we have shown that this president is a disgrace to our country. Mitch mcconnell himself said that. These senators have decided to hang their hat on jurisdictional grounds which are not based in the evidence, which are not based on the facts, and they will have to be judged for that. We have done our duty to the American People. We are in a very dangerous moment. The Republican Partys refusal to hold donald trump to account for inciting violence will only embolden him and others like him and of course some of his more. Trump warning that his Beautiful Movement has only just begun, may be gearing up for another run for the presidency in 2024. All these cowardly senators who couldnt face up to what the president did and what was at stake for our country are now going to have a chance to give a little slap on the wrist . We censure people for using stationery for wrong purpose, but not for inviting insurrection that kills people in the capitol. Senator carden was front and center for the trial. Thank you for joining me. You spoke earlier this week about how traumatic and painful it was to have to relive that tragic day january 6th, how your family on that day didnt know if you were safe, couldnt contact you. How do you feel today, the morning after 43 republican senators, including im guessing some friends of yours, voted to acquit donald trump for inciting that attack on you . First, its good to be with you. Thank you for having me. Obviously very disappointed that we didnt get 67 senators to vote for a conviction. The managers established the case. Mitch mcconnell acknowledged that. There were clearly 67 senators, probably more, that were convinced that donald trump incited an insurrection against our country. There is no higher crime or misdemeanor for an Impeachment Process. So clearly i was disappointed that he was not convicted. He should have been convicted using a Jurisdiction Nal Argument Debunked by constitutional experts is very disappointing, and it has a bad message for the future presidencies. Definitely. The president is kind of scary, actually. Last year at the end of Donald Trumps first Impeachment Trial, you issued this statement. You said, all previous Impeachment Trials have had witnesses and evidence. The senate should have been able to receive further evidence before concluding its trial in this case whether the additional evidence was incriminating or exculpatory. Therefore the senate has failed to conduct a constitutionally proper trial. You were right then. But how does all of that not also apply to this senate trial, this time with democrats in charge of the whole process . I mean, how can you justify not Calling Witnesses after winning a vote on witnesses just yesterday morning . Well, theres really no Additional Information we needed from live witnesses. The reason why we voted for to allow additional witnesses was for congresswoman butlers comments to be able to be heard and put into the record. And that was achieved after our vote. So there was really no need for additional witnesses. We were all witnesses. We saw the videos. The record was very complete about what donald trump had done. The only witness i would have liked to hear from perhaps was the president of the united states, but it was his option whether he wanted to refute the information. He chose not to. Theres clear inferences and we now know that he did nothing when we were all in harms way when his own Vice President was at risk, President Trump decided that it was more important tone courage the insurrection than to protect our democracy. But you dont think hearing from congresswoman butler live actually speaking would have helped your cause or hurt the republicans or hurt their arguments . You dont think we needed to hear from mark meadows, the president s chief of staff, from National Guard officers who may have been told to stand down, from rioters who were on record saying we were told by donald trump to go to the white house . I mean, a trial without witnesses is not a proper trial. You said it yourself last year. Well, we heard from all of those witnesses, saw their videos and what we said. So we heard from them as part of the record. Thats all part of the evidence. As i said, i am convinced that more than 67 senators believed that the managers established the case that donald trump incited an insurrection against our country. Thats what Mitch Mcconnell said after his vote. And the fact that he denied voting for conviction because he said donald trump is no longer president , the overwhelming constitutional scholars as well as prior Impeachment Trials in the senate were against former officers. Youre right about that. And Mitch Mcconnells statements are truly ridiculous. But i have to ask you one last thing on the witness issue. Politico sent to chris coons of delaware telling the House Managers why they shouldnt Call Witnesses, and the quote is the jury is ready to vote, people want to get home for valentines day. You can understand why democratic voters across the country are upset, even angry with you and some of your colleagues when they hear stuff like that, senators want to go home. I can tell you we were prepared to stay as long as we needed to to have this trial. That is not how we felt. We were prepared to stay and do our work as long as it took, and quite frankly, if witnesses had been called there would have been a break in the trial for depositions, et cetera, and we would have come back a couple weeks later to complete the trial. Thats not at all the reason why. We have great center field in Congressman Raskin, the chief manager, proud of his work as a Fellow Marylander. He established the case. It was his strategies that convinced all of us that donald trump should have been convicted. I trust his judgment on these issues. Theres no denying that your Fellow Marylander Congressman Raskin did an impressive job. One last question. There is talk of a Bipartisan Group of members of congress coming together to invoke section 3 of the 14th Amendment against trump. That section allows for the banning from elected office of anyone whos been engaged in insurrection, and it would require only a simple majority in congress, which you have. Is that something you support doing Going Forward . Look, i think what donald trump did was impeachable, we should have convicted him, he should not be able to run for any office of trust again. This is not the first time hes violated his Oath Of Office as president of the united states. So any action we can take to make it clear that what donald trump did as president was unacceptable we should pursue. Good to hear that. Thank you so much, democrat senator ben carden. Appreciate your time this morning. Joining me now is justice correspondent for the nation. You heard senator carden there. What do you make of the democrats argument for not calling any witnesses physically . The senator saying we heard from them in video in evidence, Got Congresswoman Butler on the record, into the record. Could you show me a Prosecutor Anywhere in this country who, when having the choice between written testimony or live testimony chooses written testimony . Like anywhere. Show my any defendant that ever got that deal to not have live witnesses at their trial. That doesnt happen. Its called i know some people are annoyed were talking about, this but its called intellectual consistency. During the first Impeachment Trial we said there should be witnesses. During the second Impeachment Trial, there should have been witnesses. Why have the vote to Call Witnesses if youre not going to Call Witnesses . The argument that oh, we didnt need anymore, then why did you need butlers statement in the record if you already proved your case . Oh, no, because it helped your case. It made it more obvious what the republicans did. It goes back to a fundamental flaw in how people are approaching this, right. The point was never to convince republicans. Republicans cannot be convinced as they just proved. Yes. The point was to expose republicans. The way you expose them even more than what was already done was by calling live witnesses, having cops. They had this whole statement about staffers. Put the staffers on the stand and let them tell their stories directly to the American People, which was the argument that we are making not trying to not living in the head space of lindsey graham, all right . So i agree with everything youre saying, especially the point about trying to change republican minds. That clearly wasnt the task or shouldnt have been the task because 43 made it clear they wouldnt change your minds. What about the argument from Daniel Goldman who argues you cant just drop witnesses into a trial cold without any prep work or without knowing what theyre going to say, especially if theyre republicans . You dont agree with that or sympathize with that view . No. Thats good issue. Thats why your question about, like, why did they run a this whole valentines day is a like we have to get home for recess is not an argument that i want to hear. Yes, it would have taken a lot longer to prep, depose, and get ready for witnesses. That would have been a much longer experience for the country. So what are they saying, they just want a little impeachment . They just wanted a little bit of a trial, not the full nine . Thats like, if youre going to have a trial, have a trial. If youre not going to have a trial thats the other side of the intellectual consistency. If youre saying it wasnt worth it to have a real trial because you were never going to convince republicans, why do the thing at all . Why did you bother . Why did you waste my time last week there are so many inconsistencies. There are so many inconsistencies, yes. This idea that republicans would never listen to extra witnesses. Why do anything if thats your bar. One last question. There has been talk about lawmakers invoking article 3 of the 14th Amendment. Senator carden didnt rule it out. Can you explain that in laymans terms . Is that a possibility, do you think . Maybe . Were talking about completely untested section of law. Honestly, before this trial, i thought about the section 3 of the 14th Amendment like for 20 seconds in my entire life maybe. Its possible, but certainly what would happen is that that would then get bumped up to the Supreme Court, which has been recently stacked with three additional judges appointed by donald trump. So what i think and what good point. The senators think about that answer doesnt matter. What matters is what five Supreme Court justices think about section 3 of the 14th Amendment, and i dont know. Fair point. I thought id ask anyways. Thank you for your insights. Appreciate it. Hypocrisy is one of the big words describing gop lawmakers who condemned the president for January 6th Capitol Riot only to do an aboutface and defend him in the Impeachment Trial. For the last four years, america was forced to wonder, where do republicans draw the line when it comes to their loyalty to donald trump . Its clear now if it wasnt before, there is no line. Take senator lindsey graham, for example, who voted to acquit yesterday, and yet heres what he said on january 6th straight after the trumpinspired insurrection. Weve had a hell of a journey, trump and i. I hate it being this way. I hate it. From my point of view, its a consequential probe, but today, first thing youll see. All i can say is count me out, enough is enough. Ive tried to be helpful. Maybe if the vote to convict trump had been held on the night of january 6th there would have been a different outcome. But ultimately for republicans, trump trumps everything. One of the biggest hypocrites of them all is Mitch Mcconnell. The senator blamed trump but voted him not guilty anyways. The worst part . Of course he did because the whole Impeachment Trial was a sham from the beginning given republican, quote, jurors. Stick around for more on that. But the right pad can. Senate Minority Leader Mitch Mcconnell pretended to keep secret the way he was going to vote until yesterday morning. He spent weeks teasing that he may vote to convict the insurrectionist former president , but of course as we all deep down knew he would, he instead voted as he always does to put his party and his own political career first. Mcconnells argument for acquitting donald trump effectively gas lit the entire Impeachment Process blaming the House Managers for not sending the article to the senate before trump left the white house, but it was his own decision to adjourn the senate until president bidens inauguration that halted the transmission of that document until after january the 20th. Lets be honest, even if trump had testified in person in the senate that he had incited the insurrection, his republicans sycophants would have still voted to aget him evidence be damned because for these mostly men, allwhite senators, the truth takes a back seat to protecting your own. It was a sham trial that for some called to mind another kind of sham trial that is being a stain on american history. Professor Brittany Cooper drew the connection on twitter. As i watched this impeachment i just kind thinking of those Sham Lynching trials of old where white injuries would never convict white men who were clearly guilty. Those jurists are political ancestors of the modern gop. Its shameful not to mention enraging. Joining us is dr. Cooper from rutgers. Shes author of Eloquent Rage A Black Feminist discovers her superpower. And the author of Blackett Nicks Race Immigration and the pursuit of the american dream. Brittany, donald trump was not on trial for lynching black people, but he was trying to kill democracy, especially for black and brown voters. And the gop just let him off. Talk more about the connection you made to those Sham Lynching trials of yesteryear. Sure. We should remember that Making A Mockery of the justice testimony by refusing to hold accountable white folk who is commit violence is an endemic feature of american democracy. It is sort of ingrained as an expectation. So, for instance, you know, in the State Of Louisiana where im from, a white man has never been sent to death row for killing a black man, ever, even though shreveport, l. A. , in the recent past has sent more black men to death row than any other district per capita in the country. Thats one startling feature of the way white men are not held accountable. This was not a trial about the death penalty. But lets not forget that people died, in particular, Police Officers died. Because of the effects or due to direct violence during these riots. And the president clearly incited these folks to come and riot. And Mitch Mcconnell, you know, could see this very directly, and yet no one is being held accountable. The president was able to incite a violent mob that got Police Officers killed, that almost got his Vice President assassinated. And nothing is going to happen to him for accountability that bespeaks this older history of us going through the procedures and motions of having a trial when everyone knows at the end that the men who created and caused the violence will not be held accountable. Such a good if depressing point you make, britney. Christina, the trump defense, apart from some nonsense about the 1st Amendment and protected speech, basically amounted to pointing the finger at black lives matter and saying they were violent too, and then pointing at a bunch of black women like Kamala Harris and Maxine Waters and saying they incited violence too. Right. Thats been their tactic since the afternoon of january 6th. If you remember, as people were still storming the capitol, you know, flying swastikas and confederate flags and spreading fee seize all over and threatening to assassinate not just the Vice President but the speaker of the house, immediately the republican Talking Points were this is what we saw all summer. That is not true. No Police Officers were killed this summer during black lives matter protests, which i would say were uprisings because people were marching in the streets. So this is a smokescreen. Mitch mcconnell and his words, words, words, but as always his vote is consistently against democracy and for donald trump. We cant be distracted by the fact that the republicans know that they are on the wrong side of history. They know theyve aided and abelted the president who does not care about the constitution or his role as executive. Sadly, because they failed to bring this former president to justice, the next time we see someone whos smarter, savvier, more thoughtful, actually reads and understands the constitution and the legislative process, our American Democratic republic could be in trouble. Very true. A point ive been making for the last day, that our democracy could be in peril because youre just giving this guy a getoutofjailfree card. Lets see what happens in the criminal prosecution. Christina, you said about Police Officers dying, there was a Law Enforcement officer in Northern California killed last summer during the protest. Mike pence talked about him in his rnc speech. He didnt mention he was this allegedly killed, the person arrested was a farright boogaloo boy. Britney . I think the core thing we have to remember here is that the modernday gop has decided like their fore bearers of old that sanctioning violence unapologetically is key to the maintenance of a white power structure. Even joe biden has conceded very early when he came to the presidency just last month that this is about race, that this is about a sort of fear and anxiety and anger on the right and the fact that white supremacist power structures are slipping away, that they are in peril. The way that White Supremacy has been protected in our country has been through lawless acts of violence that have been sanctioned by u. S. Democratic processes. Republicans know that, and the thing that they are bidding for here is the right to be violent in public as a reinforcement of White Supremacy. And what they are asking their 74 million voters to do, the 74 million voters who voted for donald trump, is to accede to this kind of democracy. This is not this is how white people have maintained their power so long. It has never been about merit. When you watch the House Managers make their case, what you saw was well put together, eloquent, deeply reasoned and thoughtful and emotional and compelling kinds of arguments. But that stuff is always suppressed by the brutd force of White Supremacy. Thats why i made the connection between the racist lynching trials of old because black folks can be more compelling and rigorous and still be suppressed by violent force. Let me jump in there to say on that note, you provided me with a perfect segue to my next question for christina, about some of the heroes of this saga. House impeachment managers, who breakout stars, black lawmakers, joe neguse of colorado and Stacey Placket from the virgin islands, have a listen to what placket said about the videos. Ill briefly say that Defense Counsel put a lot of videos out in their defense, playing clip after clip of black women talking about fighting for a cause or an issue or a policy. Not lost on me is so many were people of color, women, black women, black women like myself, who are Sick And Tired of being Sick And Tired for our children. Christina, Sick And Tired. I mean, as someone whos working on a book about Barbara Jordan and fannie lou, i could feel what she was saying deeply. To extend britneys point, so much of this ire were seeing from not just the republicans but their rightwing sycophants is that Kamala Harris is a heartbeat away from the presidency. They cannot fathom that a black woman could be in charge despite merits and qualifications. It is absolutely mindboggling to them that someone like Representative Plaskett, who isnt a properly Voting Member because she represents the virgin islands, could come up and literally lay out the most cogent argument for the democrats, for the american public, quite honestly, and they can ignore it. Nef the power to do so. They represent the vast majority of america. But that doesnt matter in this sort of judicial system. Weve seen it. When i saw Representative Plaskett speaking and red britneys tweet yesterday, the only person i could think of was mamie till, having to sit there time and time again, emmett tills mother, who was lynched and murdered in mississippi, time and time again we saw sham trials with white defendants and white jurors. It was a joke of our american democracy. The world sees it. Thats the piece we have to understand. The world knows that the emperor has no clothes. President trump is expose for who he always has been. So many good americans are wringing their hands saying how could this be. Welcome to black america. Weve seen this time and time again since we got the right to vote and integrated into society more fully. Yeah. The world knows. Well put. We have to leave it there. Britney cooper, christna greer, thanks so much for your time. Have a great rest of your weekend. Up next, representative omar will give us her reason for acquitting President Trump. A serum so powerful dark spots dont stand a chance. See what i mean . Neutrogena® lead impeachment manager congressman jamie raskin of maryland was on Meet The Press moments ago explaining why his team chose not to call any witnesses yesterday. We brought up the resolution right at the time that the resolutions for witnesses were called for according to t for senate resolution. Theres no other time we could have done it. That was the moment to do it. We won that vote. We were going to proceed to do it, then the republicans stipulated to allow the evidence to come into the record. Now, you ask about some other people who might have gotten up there and lied, we dont know what Kevin Mccarthy would have said. That was her record of what he was telling people. What he told people was that he had called trump to say youve got to get us out of this hell, these people are here, trump said its antifa. Mccarthy said no, its your people, you have to get us out of here to which trump said Something Like maybe they just care more about the election than you do, ie, trump knew exactly what they were doing, knew that mob which he deployed was there occupying peoples offices and threatening congress. So it was there for everybody to see. So we could have had a thousand witnesses but that could not have overcome the kinds of silly arguments that people like mcconnell and others wither hanging their hats on. Theyre trying to have it both ways. The sheer fact that they considered that congressman Kevin Mccarthy, republican leader in the house, might lie under oath is kind of astounding but also not surprising. Joining me now is one of Donald Trumps most vocal critics in the house, in congress, democratic Representative Ilhan Omar of minnesota, the whip for the house progressive caucus. Good morning, congresswoman. You drew up articles of impeachment on the day of the attack itself, january 6th. Is this what you intended, a trial without witnesses . Is that what you thought would happen . Sure. I mean, obviously we have the witnesses as part of congress. I mean, we were all there as members of the house. The senate was all there. The American People were all there. And so it really wouldnt have been that much necessary to have additional witnesses come speak to evidence that majority of us saw and were present for. Although congresswoman butler, republican congresswoman, she was the only person who knows about the call between Kevin Mccarthy and donald trump. Im assuming theres various people in the National Guard who know what happens in phone calls with the pentagon that day about whether to go or stand down. You have plenty of people who could have offered insights and hurt the defenses argument. It seemed bizarre yesterday to see a vote thats won by the democrats on witnesses, talk of witnesses, then suddenly at the last second a pullback apparently to save time. Surely you get why a lot of democrats both online and grassroots activists are upset. They see democrats folding again in the face of republican obstruction and never being up for a fight. I mean, i can understand their frustration, but you have to remember that leadership in the senate, leadership in the house were all having these conversations with the administration, with mike pence, with trump, and they were all reporting back to their caucuses. And so 90 of these conversations we are talking about are not something that would have been new information to any of the people that would have made any considerations on whether to convict or acquit this president. The decisions sadly that the Republican Party has made was a calculation based on power and violence, being more valuable to them than protecting this democracy. What we saw in this weeks Impeachment Trial were nearly every single Senate Republican voted to block even the consideration of charges against trump tells us everything that we need to know. I mean, i was in the room with ten of the leaders, five from the senate, five from the house. I remember the pleas they were making to the Acting Secretary of the d. O. D. I remember mitch and the conversations he was having. He remembers those conversations. He was there. He remembers that the president did not send help and was not doing what he needed to do as president of the united states. I think youre right about the Republican Party and what they did on tuesday, 45 of them say its not even constitutional to try donald trump. Thats clear. And no ones making any excuses for a billion dollarfaith antidemocratic Republican Party. I guess what were saying, its not about trying to convince republicans. Its about doing whats necessary to get to the truth, doing whats necessary to expose all of the evidence, and not being in a hurry. Im guessing that if you were president and you were accused of inciting an insurrection, republicans would dont a fourday, fiveday trial without witnesses. Theyd drag it out to hurt you. Certainly. I mean, and you have to remember, you know, there are calculations people have to make in regards to time and how much of the work that we have to do will be taken up by this. There is so much pain and suffering thats happening with the American People, and, you know, we do have other pressures of people telling us to get them the covid relief they need and to get to work on behalf of the people as well. Definitely. And that needs to be done, although theres a separate debate about the filibuster preventing a lot of that work and the rest of the biden agenda getting done. Im just checking. You were in favor of getting rid of the filibuster, right . Right. Thats really now what we have to do. We need to dramatically reform our democratic institutions. We have to end this filibuster. We have to ban gerrymandering. We have to make sure that we were removing substantial barriers for voting for lowincome communities and people of color. We have to end the unchecked Corporate Power in politics. Theres a lot of work that we can do. On that note, were almost out of time, but i want to ask you about the work youre doing, unrelated to impeachment but important. You and senator Elizabeth Warren last week coauthored a letter to the Biden Administration calling for a review of u. S. Sanctions as a Foreign Policy tool. You say its causing humanitarian suffering. Briefly, how is it causing suffering . Where . In so many places. We know that its going to be really important, the Biden Administration has already taken a first step to do a review and were asking them to do a comprehensive review and get rid of, you know, sanctions that are counterproductive. We know that sanctions often are a tool that is used. We dont check whether its going to work or not and oftentimes it hurts the people in those countries that we are trying to help. And we are asking for this administration to take a holistic look and get rid of those that are harmful and counterproductive to what we are trying to accomplish as a country. Well, well have to leave it there. Were out of time. Thank you so much, ilhan omar of minnesota. Appreciate you taking time out this morning. Dont go anywhere. Watching republican senators whose very lives were threatened by Donald Trumps Mob On January 6th turn around on February The 13th and vote to acquit him of inciting that mob cant be called surprising or shocking anymore given the path the republican body has taken since donald trump took it over. But its still a thing to behold. Listen to senator Mitch Mcconnell condemn trump and his mob a few short weeks ago. The mob was fed lies. They were provoked by the president and other powerful people. And they tried to use fear and violence to stop a specific proceeding of the first branch of the federal government, which they did not like. But we pressed on. We stood together and said an angry mob would not get veto power over the rule of law in our nation, not even for one night. We certified the peoples choice for their 46th president. That was Mitch Mcconnell on january the 19th. Just three weeks later he voted to acquit the expresident for inciting that mob, feeding them those lies and sewing that violence. This sadly,. While the senate has votd to acquit former President Trump, the vote represents the most bipartisan verdict on a president ial Impeachment Trial in history. And the seven republican senators who voted to convict will now be in big trouble with their local parties. Despite costing republicans the presidency, the senate, the house and scores of seats at the state and local levels in the span of just four years, a new cnbc survey shows a clear majority of republicans want trump to remain active in the party, with nearly half saying they want him to remain head of the gop. Just 26 of them say they want trump out of politics. What this means, what this acquittal and the state of Republican Party politics means is that we can expect a ramping up of the Republican Partys War On Small D democracy. The radicalization of republicans will continue and what we have to look forward to are more lies, possibly more violence and definitely more attacks on our Voting Rights. Joining me now is dr. Carol anderson, professor and chair of africanamerican studies at emory university. Author of books such as white rage and one person, no vote. Carol, thanks for coming on the show. Talk about where radicalized Republican Party goes from here, a party thats basically gotten away with an insurrection attempt. It doubles down. It doubles down in terms of laws that are going after to restrict the right to vote. Particularly for communities that they dont believe are viable american citizens. It doubles down in terms of making sure that Minority Rule is embedded in the systems and resisting all attempts at change. And it doubles down in terms of increasingly agony of americans. And in doing so, to then try to move, shift that blame for that agony on to the democrats for not being able to pass legislation, to ease the ills of a struggling economy and of covid19. As you say, the crackdowns on Voting Rights are coming, have started from the gop. This is a party that, rather than wanting to expand its own electorate is busy trying to crack down, whittle down its opponents voters. Even brad raffensberger, who was a hero to liberals in georgia for standing up to trump is cracking down on Voting Rights in georgia. Is cracking down on Voter Registration organizations in his state, as well, isnt he . Yes, and lets be clear. Raffensberger, in the primaries in june, when he talked about increasing access to Absentee Ballots also said, and im starting a Voter Fraud Commission for Absentee Ballots. So raffensberger was right there in the kool aid mix in terms of hyping voter fraud, voter fraud, voter fraud. And so were seeing this thing where getting hoisted by your own because they have just trolled in the language of massive rampant voter fraud for so long that its now being deployed against them and this is why you saw the three recounts here in georgia. And you are seeing the Georgia Legislature itself going after restricting noexcuse Absentee Ballots. Carol . Yes. Weve also seen in the past few days several state gop conferences, censure fellow republicans in congress, for not appearing to go along with the party. The Louisiana State party just censured senator cassidy for failing to convict trump. Is, ironically, freedom of speech, Freedom Of Thought dead in the gop where they always complain about cancel culture . You know, the gop has moved so far to the right so you think about it that they could they are Censuring Cassidy for the impeachment vote, but that same gop in louisiana would not censure david duke. So this need to have conformity and a conformity to the Ultra Right Wing is really where this party is. And so that mitt romney, who was the 2012 president ial candidate for the republicans is really outside the party right now. Yeah, and its only been, what, nine years since mitt romney was the president ial candidate, and he seems like complete outlier. I, like you, worry about the shift of the far right. I wonder how a democracy can survive in a system where one of the parties is no longer committed to free and fair elections. Well have to leave it there. Carol anderson, professor and chair of africanamerican studies at emory university. We appreciate your insights this morning. That does it for me. Thank you for watching. House impeachment manager Stacey Plaskett joins me live to talk about the case and its outcome. Trump declares his Maga Movement has just begun. Former trump fixer Michael Cohen is here with his assessment. And what happened to Blue Lives Matter . Im Jonathan Capehart and this is The Sunday Show. Donald trump has evaded conviction once again. While the vote at his Senate Impeachment trial was the most bipartisan in american history, seven republican senators joining all 50 democrats in declaring trump guilty, it was not enough to reach the twothirds majority necessary to convict. After a day rife with political theater and backdoor deals, democrats were ultimately allowed to enter into evidence a republican lawmakers incriminating account that alleged trump sided with the insurrectionists. But while it further cemented the democrats argument, it ultimately did little to deter trumps stronghold on the Republican Party. Case in point, this damning speech from Senate Minority leader
