In washington where the white house launched a fullcourt press, a hard sell on the president s 1. 9 Trillion Covid Relief Plan facing criticism today even from a former obama official. Well have more on all of that for you in a moment. Meantime, over on capitol hill, some folks may be experiencing a case of whiplash. Congresswoman Majorie Taylor greene fresh off getting booted from her House Committees sounding a whole lot different today than the Majorie Taylor greene we heard yesterday when she was trying to save her place on those committees, saying 9 11 absolutely did happen and School Shootings were absolutely real. Note, though, she didnt apologize yesterday. Including for things like previously endorsing the execution of Top Democrats including nancy pelosi. But her remarks were enough for 199 House Republicans, that is all but 11 of her caucus to stand by her arguing that she deserves redemption. Now listen to Majorie Taylor greene today. If i was on a committee, id be wasting my time because my conservative values wouldnt be heard and neither would my districts. I tell you again, im fine with being kicked off my committees because it would be a waste of my time. But youre doing a good job and addicting our nation to hate. Teaching people to hate people like me. President trump. On the right its the same way. Teaching people to hate aoc, ilhan omar, nancy pelosi. It goes both ways, doesnt it . Not so contrite. Im not going go through all of what she said. Dolinger on her accusation of who teaches people to hate. Look at this blownup Facebook Post from Majorie Taylor greene with the faces of ilhan omar, aoc and Rashida Tlaib that steny hoyer used to make his point last night. This is an ar15 in the hands of ms. Greene. Look at that image and what message you think it sends. Also today taylor green accused ocasiocortez of lying about her experience during the insurrection. I was in the chamber unlike aoc, representative ocasiocortez that faked her outrage with another hoax. Just another hoax that gets shared everywhere. Teaching people to hate. Any way, about donald trump, Majorie Taylor greene said the party is his. It doesnt belong to anyone else. Tell that to republican ben sasse who said this in the face of a censure from his own state party. You are welcome to censure me again. But lets be clear about why this is happening. It is because i still believe, as you used to, that politics isnt about the weird worship of one dude. The weird worship of one dude. Fox news, three hosts and Trump Lawyers are all facing a Multibillion Dollar Defamation Lawsuit from an Election Technology company, dominion. It accuses them of conspiring to defame the company with false claims that the election was stolen. The story turned neighbor against neighbor. The Story Led A Mob to attack the u. S. Capitol. As donald trump faces an Impeachment Trial next week tied to that riot, it was one year ago today that donald trump was acquitted in his first Impeachment Trial. And this is what senator josh hawley said at the time. It has been the resentment of a professional Political Class that cannot accept the verdict of the people in 2016, that cannot accept the peoples priorities and that now seeks to overturn the election and entrench themselves in power. Its time to turn to the future. A future where this town finally accepts the peoples judgment and the peoples verdict. February 5, 2020. If only senator hawley had a crystal ball. Joining me now is leann caldwell, who was on capitol hill. Also with us david jolly of florida and former u. S. Attorney joyce vance. Everybody, welcome. Leann, Majorie Taylor greene yesterday sounding like she was contrite, sort of, On The House Floor, distancing herself from those conspiracy theories. Today she sounded like her old self. Yeah. Well, she started her Press Conference talking about policy. Her deeply conservative policy beliefs. But then it took a turn. Theres a couple things that stood out to me. Its clear that Majorie Taylor greene will continue to be a troll. She will troll the left. Shes going to troll the media. And even her republican colleagues who she thinks is not sufficiently conservative enough. She said that when she is no longer or she will have a lot of free time because she doesnt have Committee Work do which takes up a lot of lawmakers time around here that she will continue to espouse her conservative beliefs and she says push her party to the right. The other thing that stood out to me is that it was very clear after her News Conference that the party is nowhere near united than republicans are trying to say right now. After their fivehour family huddle a couple days ago where they talked about liz cheney, everyone came out singing saying the party that never been so united. But Majorie Taylor greene says the party is of trump and hes still the leader of the party. Thats not how a lot of republicans think the future of the party should go, namely liz cheney, senator Mitch Mcconnell in the senate and theres a long list of those republicans including the 11 who voted to strip her of her Committee Assignments last night. So this party has a lot of reckoning to do and a big decision of how they move forward. It could be a big headache for republicans moving into the 2022 elections. So, we have that list up on the screen of the 11 republicans who voted to oust her from her committees. There were ten republicans in the house to voted to impeach donald trump. We dont know whether republicans will go there in the senate trial, but it looks like theyll acquit him based on the constitutionality of the process. At the same time you have what leann is reporting, you have ben sasse saying this is the weird worship of a dude thats not conservative. If there is this feeling among republicans that donald trump is not their party, why are we not seeing more republicans come out and be open to at least hearing the evidence during this trial . Because i think the party is still gripped by trumpism. Ben sasse is a minority, so is liz cheney. The telling dynamic this week is more House Republicans voted to remove liz cheney from leadership because of her Impeachment Vote than voted to remove Majorie Taylor greene from her committees over the incendiary comments she espoused. So were witnessing Kevin Mccarthy, a man desperate, desperate to be speaker of the house, hes trying to build a big tent. The remarkable thing about this moment for Todays Republican Party is in the past conversations about a bigtent party, about ideology, trying to coalesce moderates and conservatives in the Republican Party, right now Kevin Mccarthy has to build a big tent around people who propagated the big lie, who tried to tackle our democracy and those who tried to defend it. This is not an ideological big tent that Kevin Mccarthy is putting his hands around, its one lacking Democratic Values and thats why that message keeps falling flat with the american people. You talk about how Kevin Mccarthy sees being speaker as within his grip. Is it within his grip if theyre fighting over whether to embrace Majorie Taylor greene or reject donald trump . Is this a Winning Strategy . Im curious because republicans gained seats in 2020 in the house. Yeah, youre right. This is counter intuitive. But republicans picked up seats in the house. Democrats lost seats in the house. Though democrats retook the majority in the senate, its still a 50 50 senate. I would say donald trump is correct, he got more republican votes than any other republican president before. So by Performance Mccarthy and other republicans dont see a need to correct. The craven lust for power, they look at it through that lens and they say look, were doing okay. We pick up 5 or 10 more seats in the house, Kevin Mccarthy says hes speaker. Dasha burns is in michigan. Youre in the Congressional District of one of the members of the House Republican caucus who voted to impeach donald trump, congressman meyer. What is going on there and how do they see whats happening within the Republican Party . Thats right. Congressman meyer won the district that kent county is in even though joe biden flipped this county turning it blue for the second time in half a century. So this county really represents some of the challenges that the Republican Party is facing. We spent a lot of time here in 2020. The trends we saw evolve here in many ways were harbingers for the explicit Identity Crisis playing out in the party right now. The voters we were talking to were hoping once donald trump was defeated there would be a sense of normalcy trickling back into the Republican Party. They say instead the opposite happened. I want you to hear from two voters, katie and cynthia. I would not associate myself with the Republican Party at all anymore. Their values are not my values. Its been pretty evident the way we watched this play out over the last couple of years, what they continue to endorse and stand up for. Until the Talking Heads started coming on and minimalize it and make excuses, i thought there was hope for the gop, the gop i grew up with and admired. Not this teastained trash that we have. Its a much Bigger Picture than just one insignificant former president. And they need to start thinking about who they serve. For cynthia, january 6th solidified cutting ties. She called her gop office and said take me off your mailing list and your phone list. Some other republicans are not ready to say goodbye to the party yet. Theyre looking for some bright spots in the Republican Party right now. They point to peter meyer as one of those, standing up voting for impeachment. We are in a very different position now than we were even as we experience a bit of a Groundhog Day situation here. When i first met these folks it was around the first Impeachment Trial and here we go again. Dasha, you have such good perspective on all of this because of the coverage youve been doing for the past year comparing voter feelings from a year ago to today. Im stuck on that teastained trash, that comment from that voter about the Republican Party. Joyce vance, this big lawsuit against fox news, its host, and Donald Trumps two lawyers, Sydney Powell and rudy giuliani, its not dominion, its another company, smartmatic is suing them. What does it mean for fox news and the rest of the defendants . This is a pretty fascinating lawsuit. The complaint, this is a civil case, not a criminal case. This is a company suing fox news, its hosts, and some of the president s former lawyers alleging defamation when fox news and others perpetuated parts of the big lie that involved their equipment that provided part of the infrastructure for voting. One suspects early on what will happen is a motion to dismiss, saying the complaint doesnt raise sufficient legal claims of defamation to move forward. But this complaint on its face is very strong. It is very likely to move forward. And then fox news and the other defendants will have to decide whether they want to run the risk of going through the discovery process, where smartmatic can suppose questions, ask for documents, get a lot of testimony about whether or not fox news and the other defendants were deliberately perpetuating information that they knew wasnt true and calling it news or whether theyll decide to settle. If so whether or not the plaintiffs will be willing to settle the case. What about the larger consequences of this, joyce . If they do get convicted or if they do if theyre found guilty of malicious intent here, does that mean that its going to be a lot harder to say whatever the heck you want on Television Going forward . So, heres a really interesting nuance. This is a civil case, but if there is a judgment against the defendants, one of the forms of relief that the plaintiffs have asked for is that that would force fox to repudiate the big lie. It would force them in the same venue where they put these untrue statements out for public circulation, to then come back and say, no, what we said wasnt true. Heres what the truth actually is. Weve seen a little bit of this going on in the context of the dominion situation with demands that people repudiate defamatory statements. So we could face a situation where fox and its hosts and the company was selective, they only sued fox hosts on the news side, not the opinion side of the programming. So they could literally force them and have a judge order these people to tell the American Public the truth. That would be refreshing. Really interesting. Smartmatic that is suing them. Joyce vance, david volley, dasha burns, leann caldwell, thank you very much. Still ahead, what this years House Impeachment Managers can learn from last years. Congressman jason crow joins us on how the second trial will play out. Another vaccine could be coming. This one is easier to store and faster to take effect. Watch out for this. First, President Biden says he wont back down on a key component of his relief plan. This is about peoples lives. This is not just about numbers. This is about peoples lives. I can tell any of you that are really hurting. Why there is fierce pushback from the white house today on a former obama official. There was a time when this represented the future. But this, this is the future. The future of communicating of hearing and connecting with life. And this, is eargo. No appointments no waiting no hassles. And they are practically invisible in your ear. Now you see it. Now you dont. If you have hearing loss now is the time to do something about it. Show your ears some love on valentines day with 350 off eargo neo hifi. Its our best deal on our best product. Others think that things are Getting Better and we can afford to sit back, either do little or nothing at all. Thats not what i see. I see enormous pain in this country. President joe biden says theres no time to waste. His administration launched a fullcourt press on covid relief this morning after the senate cleared the way to fast track the bill during an allnight voterrama. It included a white house invitation for leading democrats, a high profile address to the nation making the case for immediate action and a White House Press briefing on the economy. Now that the bill is on track to become law, much of todays conversation has been about an oped from former obama adviser Larry Summers, who arcs that the president s 2 trillion package could go too far. But the Democratic Party remains united behind the president s plan. Biden says the only risk is not going far enough. So, the way i see it, the biggest risk is not going too big its if we go too small. Joining me now is politicos ben white. Also with me is gene sperling, he served as director of the National Economic council and assistant to the president under president s bill clinton and barack obama. Gene, what do you think of Larry Summers oped if the package is this big it could do more harm to the economy than good . Well, on this issue i strongly disagree with larry. And i actually think that what he said is inconsistent with a lot of his recent writing that made the case for going big fiscally and not worrying as much about somewhat higher deficits when Interest Rates are so historically low. Let me put in more real terms why the risks are why i think larry is wrong. Its not just its partly what the president said so eloquently, this is about peoples lives, its about longterm employment, its about evictions, its about real suffering. It
