That was so controversial they forced a secret vote on whether to keep her in power, a vote cheney ultimately won by a lot. Meanwhile congresswoman greene who built her public reputation as a supporter of anti semitic Conspiracy Theories and straight up Political Violence she got the opposite treatment. Republicans publicly rallying around her after she reportedly apologized for some of her past statements. Democrats are not so forgiving. They are going to force a vote on the House Floor Today that could strip greene of her committee assignments. I want to start with Garrett Haake on capitol hill. What are we going to see with this vote today . Reporter some of that will depend on how congresswoman greene chooses to handle herself going forward. Ill be curious to see if the apology she made Behind Closed Doors to republicans is the kind of thing she might repeat on the house floor in public. We do expect this vote to go forward this afternoon stripping her of committee assignments. Democrats will be acting unilaterally and i have a question of how much republicans will defend her conduct and comments in the past, or whether they choose to cast this as democratic overreach, as democrats sort of taking a procedural step too far so that they can vote against her being stripped of her committees without having to defend her conduct. Today will be kind of the capstone of more than a week of debate on the issue of this congressman and her past comments. Democrats feel like the sort of final bar here, the thing that pushed them to this point, was her endorsements of Political Violence, you know, the specter of january 6th is still too present here and that is essentially forcing democrats to act, let the chips fall where they may in the kind of Slippery Slope arguments that republicans are making about if you do this to our members well be doing it to you in the future. Thats what were looking forwards around 4 30 or 5 00 this evening. Not in the room, i was not in the room so neither of us heard Marjorie Taylor greene apologize but our next guest was there. Illinois republican congressman adam kinzinger. He was in that room last night, he joins us now. He launched a new group called Country First to combat what he is calling poisonous extremism in his own Republican Party. Congressman, lets talk about last night. Steve scalise said last night was about Airing Grievances and getting everyone on the same page. What was your big takeaway . Yeah, i mean, it was definitely Airing Grievances, you know, this again, we went into last night and the freedom club had said they had way more than enough votes to throw liz cheney out unfortunately it took a Secret Ballot for people to have the courage to defend her but she won in a huge way and it goes to show all that false Bra Vado The Freedom Club had. The marge rooe taylor green issue, i was surprised we were all expected to defend her. She was somewhat contrite but personally i never heard an apology. It will be interesting today to see what she says publicly. All ive seen on her twitter is doubling down on the real losers in the Republican Party arent qanon its people that lose gracefully is what she tweeted a day or two ago. Somewhat contrite. Kevin mccarthy would have us believe she gave a serious apology. What did you hear . Yeah, i dont like to go into a ton of detail about conference. How about some . I didnt hear an apology. I didnt hear, you know, im going to say this publicly. And quite honestly, again, this is the issue isnt apologizing to us. Were just other members of congress. Its, i think, going out into the public and saying that in the public sphere. Thats a whole thing about what the idea of Country First gop is by the way is giving people the courage to stand up and Tell The Truth in public, even if it feels uncomfortable. Telling the truth shouldnt be hard and unfortunately it feels like its become that way for some. Lets talk about standing up, whether its in private or public, because lets look at the numbers. Ten republicans went on record to impeach donald trump, just ten. But 145 of them were willing to vote in secret to back liz cheney who was at risk of losing her spot because she voted to impeach. What does that say about your party . Well, i think it says there needs to be a wakeup call. What is a wakeup call. Well, first off, to blame liz cheney for you being uncomfortable about an Impeachment Vote means youre not blaming the right person for that. That was donald trump who incited the insurrection. The second thing it means, though, is we need courage. We need people that are willing to stand up in public and say what may be difficult to say, which is, you know, because of the political implications or whatever, this is things like qanon isnt real or theres no jewish space lasers and Marjorie Taylor greene should publicly renounce that. Its weird theres such a low bar right now but all we can do, in my case, try to restore the party, speak truth in power, speak truth in darkness and fight to do that. Lets talk about courage, qanon and speaking truth. I want to play what leader mccarthy said about qanon last year and then what he said last night. Watch this. Let me be very clear, there is no place for qanon in the Republican Party. I do not support it. And the candidate you talked about has denounced it. I think it would be helpful if you could hear exactly what she told all of us, denouncing qanon. I dont know if i say it right. I dont know what it is. He doesnt know if he said it right. He doesnt know what it is. Give me a break. My children know what it is at this point. What does this say about your party being serious about fighting the Qanon Movement when, clearly, Kevin Mccarthy was speaking absolute nonsense last night. He used the same kind of qanon i dont know how its called thing in the brother, please. All i can say is what i believe which is we all know what qanon is, we all know its garbage. If were scared to call that out, i think that shows that there needs to be a really a reckoning with what happened on january 6th and weve been too eager to paper that over and move on to whatever the next outrage of the day is and not fully deal with what happened on january 5th. All i can do is stand and say im going to speak truth and call it out as much as i can and i certainly hope people follow. Because this party desperately needs to be a normal, functional party for this country and were not on the path to that right now. Do you have any plan or confidence that that is going to happen . I mean, i get it, you want to have a wakeup call or a reckoning, but there you had Kevin Mccarthy Last Night Overstating this apology for Marjorie Taylor greene and pretending he doesnt know what qanon is. Thats the leader that makes no sense. I dont know if i have a ton of confidence but i do Have Hopefulness for two reasons, number one, liz cheney survived huge last night, even if it was Secret Ballot, it was Secret Ballot by definition. We couldnt have had a roll call anyway. Secondarily, when i launched Country First. Com, by the way with a one, i have to do the plug there, when i launched that i said, look, i dont know what this is going to be the Outpouring Of, like, demand to join that that people have had of saying thank you for saying truth, that actually gives me some hope that were at the beginning of something big, which is to take back the Republican Party and make it a normal, functioning party. But is that demand from donors, from voters, or fellow lawmakers . Well, right now its from the base, its from all over and thats where it starts at. Thats where it starts is people demanding better of their leaders. Leaders simply kind of follow the whims of people which is really what this was kind of built for except in these cases i think we have to stand up and be light in darkness. We will be watching. Please come back soon, thanks for joining. You bet. To the very important push for a new covid relief package. President biden is predicting he will ultimately get bipartisan support, but hes also telling democrats his top priority is passing a bill asap however he needs to get it done. Peter alexander is here to help us understand whats going on inside of d. C. Heres our chief White House Correspondent and Ashley Parker White House Bureau chief for the washington post. Peter, lets talk about this new quinnipiac poll, it says nearly 70 of americans are backing bidens plan. Does that not motivate republicans to get on board or give biden the confidence to go at it alone. Reporter white house officials will tell you polls like that one and what happened in georgia where both Raphael Warnock and jon ossoff won their races and this is at the heart of the debate down there, this gives President Biden the mandate to act right now but we heard biden that he wants the unity. White house said that doesnt mean republican senators will be on board but it sure means the majority of americans believe this is the route forward. As you hear republicans, there is a deep division there between the republicans view and this white houses view after two or 4 trillion in the course of five previous covid relief packages. They are opposed to anything close to 2 trillion additionally. The best counterproposal roughly 600 billion at this point. For President Biden thats a nonstarter. Hes not conceding any significant ground. Among the possible places for wiggle room i would watch, and weve heard from the white house and from this president speaking to democrats on that 1,400 of direct payments, that that number could be a bit more targeted. It doesnt sound like it will go down but maybe to a smaller number of americans based on income. And also rumblings im hearing, if anything goes to the 15 minimum wage increase, thats one place for the potential for some compromise may exist when you speak to folks familiar with this process they say they hope that will bring on board folks like joe manchin from west virginia, and maybe some republicans as well, steph. Then, ashley, lets dig into what peter just laid out, i know pushing the divide makes for great headlines. But lets look at what theyre actually doing. The white house and republicans are basically on the same page when it comes to supporting small business. Theyre both willing to do targeted direct checks. Albeit not the same amount of money yet. Yet theyre on different pages when it comes to how much they want to give schools and state aid. Are they really that far apart or could they find a middle ground here . I mean, if you look at the proposal from the ten republican senators, theyre quite far apart. You know, its a large amount of money that the republican senators are offering but its still about a third of the 1. 9 trillion that the biden people believe is not ideal but is necessary. You know, absolutely urgent and necessary to get this bill passed. And when you talk to white house officials one thing they stress is we didnt just choose a number, and then fill it up with priorities, we got to this number because we believe that each thing in it is absolutely essential. So this is not a sort of traditional negotiation where, you know, one side starts at 1. 9 trillion. One part starts at about 700 billion and they arrive somewhere in the middle. As you said and as peter said, biden is eager, genuinely eager for bipartisanship. And he is willing to compromise in the margins but it seems unlikely that they will sort of truly meet in the middle on this one. Ashley, if republicans dont get on board, if this is going to be all democrats all the time, does joe biden have enough democrats under the tent, on the same page to get his plan through, for reconciliation . The white house believes they do, and one thing, again, in talking to white house officials yesterday that they stressed was as much as they want bipartisanship, and as much as they have the majority, it is an incredibly narrow majority. As much as they need to keep democrats on board, their calculation is lets say if you win over five republicans but in the process you lose seven or eight more progressive democrats, that doesnt really help them in any way. And so the more sure back right now despite the duel track outreach to get republicans on board or have conversations for bipartisanship is by keeping all democrats together and doing this through reconciliation. Ashley, peter, thank you so much, were going to leave it there. We have got a lot to cover in the next few minutes. Coming up, newly sworn in treasury secretary janet yellen will address the craze surrounding gamestop and other stocks today as the trading app robinhood is now facing lawsuits after it froze trades on some stocks last week. But up next, a look inside a California Lab working to detect new coronavirus variants. Meanwhile, across the country down in florida, outrage after video inside a very busy Grocery Store shows basically no one Wearing Masks. Not the employees. Not the shoppers. No one. You know what that makes you think about . Health care workers. Were having to deal with the fallout of that. Eah, no. Plus its not even like hed be into me or whatever. This could be hi. Now to the latest on the coronavirus pandemic, the number of new daily cases continues to slow, but not the death rate. 3,743 people died yesterday here in the u. S. Alone. Nbc news has learned the Biden Administration is considering sending masks to all americans directly. Right now the covid19 Response Team is evaluating the logistics of mailing out millions of face coverings. And oxford is set to begin the first trial to investigate giving alternating doses of the vaccine. For example, a Trial Participant could get the first dose of the astrazeneca vaccine and a second dose would be the pfizer vaccine. Our team of reporters is following these latest developments and i want to go first to california where Steve Patterson got a firsthand look at how the fight against coronavirus is going, but most specifically these new mutations. Steve, whats going on there . Well, stephanie, as you may be able to see behind me, this is an around the clock effort and it is so important for very obvious reasons, which is we cant fight what we dont understand or even worse dont know exists, the researchers here at stanford have essentially developed their own test. They can tell if somebody is covid positive, whether or not that comes from one of these more transmissible variants. They do that by harvesting as many samples as they can, breaking down those covid positive samples on a genetic level. The biggest worry is that one of these variants may be able to make the vaccines that are currently available less effective. It is a fascinating process. I spoke about it with the lead scientist here how they do it. Listen to this. This is the area where the specimens come and and we check them into the Electronic Medical Record Laboratory Information System so that we can keep track of them throughout the entire process. What were seeing here are positive curves. Reporter so these are people that are positive . Those are yeah, those are specimens that were collected and we went through that whole process that we just talked about, and they are positive for the sarscov2 virus. Reporter these samples have covid. And then we take these and run a separate reaction thats similar to this that would detect those specific variants. Reporter so the new mandate from the cdc is that efforts like this need to step up, the u. S. Is woefully behind. Were somewhere around 30th in the world for sequencing the virus, behind countries like lot via. The less we understand the less were able to fight back. Now i want to turn to florida where this outrageous video of people in a Grocery Store not Wearing Masks was caught on tape by our own sam brock. Sam, you walked into a Grocery Store to get a sandwich, and you saw this. Employees, customers basically, no one with a mask on. I had a feeling it was you because it was shot so high. Most of us would have to is stand on two ladders to shoot that video. What in the world was going on . Reporter yeah, the Vantage Point is unique to me, steph, good morning, very good to be with you. Look, i think sometimes in these situations you worry youre showing a snapshot of something that might not actually be the reality. I didnt go in there looking for a story. I went in there looking for lunch. When i got inside the supermarket, i got chills because there were doz dozens of people, if not hundreds, and most of them were not Wearing Masks. Thats what the video shows, where i am in Collier County, florida on the western side of the state here at a nearby naples, there were Mask Mandates in both of those governments that require people to wear masks when they go inside of a supermarket, business, any sort of establishment. The owner here is currently in legal battles with Collier County over that very thing. Hes been cited and fined repeatedly for this, it is not necessarily representative of whats going on in florida. Ive lived in a bunch of places, in miami and miami beach. And not seen anything like this, and in naples, not seen anything like that. Heres a conversation with the owner of this supermarket. You dont think masks work and that the virus is not a real thing. I know that the virus has not killed 400,000 people in this country. Thats total hogwash. Why dont we shut the world down because of Heart Attacks . Why dont we shut why dont we lock down cities because of Heart Attacks . Reporter the reaction to that video youve been playing, steph, has been a tidal wave, its been viewed more than 2 million times so far in less than 24 hours, 5,000 comments on it, the majority of them, steph, are people that are outraged. Some of whom are also saying of course the science doesnt prove the masks work but we know thats not true. Stunning, sam. Thank you. Ive got to get more answers. Lets bring in dr. Celine gounder. Ive got to get your reaction to this crazy video from florida and this store owner who says why dont we shut the world down over Heart Attacks. Youre a doctor. Have you ever had a patient, have you ever seen a patient breathe on a Health Care Professional and kill them from a heart attack . Stephanie, i actually knew about this Grocery Store. A friend of mine lives near there and sent know photos of this place about a month ago. This is not just a snapshot in time. This has been whats been happening for months at this Grocery Store now. We do not implement restrictions on mask wearing and social distancing for Heart Attacks because Heart Attacks are not an Infectious Disease spread by Respiratory Droplets and aerosols. Its simply a completely different disease. We are seeing transmission, you asked about a Patient Breathing on a health care provider. Yeah, were seeing that in the hospital right now. The hospital where i work, weve seen transmission. Unfortunately, within the hospital, which may well relate to the rise, emergence of these new more infectious variants. Where we really need to be very careful about not only masking but what kind of mask were wearing. Lets talk about this new oxford trial where they are planning alternating vaccines. So basically your first shot could be from astrazeneca, and the second one from pfizer. What do you think of that . So when we talk about what is science, whats the scientific method, it is asking questions, coming up with hypothesis without testing, that is not scientific. What you do to prove this works is to actually test it. I think it makes a lot of sense that theyre testing these combinations. I think we should be testing different Dosing Schedules to see what works best. And in the end this will probably give us more flexibility and options. I think the more restrictive our options are, the more difficult it will be to get everybody vaccinated. Many of us are optimistically looking at this vaccine like its a Golden Ticket but now there are new reports out of the uk that says this uk variant might make these vaccines less effective. Is that true . Its not just the uk variant. Were seeing the same thing with the variant out of south africa. Another out of brazil. All three, by the way, have been detected here in the united states. You know, i think of this as a tug of war between us and the virus and we see the vaccines coming but we havent won the war yet and its like were all just dropping the rope and letting the virus win in the meantime. We have a long ways to go, still, before everyone is vaccinated. And the best thing we can do to prevent the rise, the spread of these variants is to prevent the spread of transmission. So if we want to protect these vaccines so that they work, we need to keep masking and social distancing, keeping to our household bubbles as much as possible, and all the rest until everybody can be vaccinated. And we just got a report from our own hill team about a new Group Getting vaccinated, the Capitol Police will be vaccinated. Thats very good news. Dr. Gounder, always good to see you. Today newly sworn in treasury secretary janet yellen will address the craze surrounding gamestop and a few other stocks that had volatile weeks. When she meets with top regulators including the heads of the sec and the federal reserve. This morning this was janet yellen. We really need to make sure that our Financial Markets are functioning properly, efficiently and that investors are protected. This comes as mobile trading app robinhood is facing its first Class Action Lawsuits for its role in the chaos. Investors say they lost millions of dollars when robinhood froze trades of multiple stocks as prices surged but it said it had to stop trading one class action alleges. 72 and citadel together with robinhood went out of their way to target mom and pop retail investors. Melvin capital is not a subsidiary, we got some comments. Citadel is not involved in or responsible for any retail brokers decision to stop trading in any way. Citadel securities responded and said Citadel Securities has not instructed or otherwise caused any Brokerage Firm to stop, suspend or limit trading or otherwise refuse to do business and. 72 called the allegations baseless writing it had no involvement in roib binhoods or any other joining me now are the two lawyers representing a total of 1,000 robinhood users in that class action lawsuit. Jeff quanitz and sean burston. Robinhood had an agreement that every customer must sign before they use the platform saying this in part, i understand that Robinhood May in its discretion prohibit or restrict the trading of securities or the substitution of securities in any of my accounts, thats the robinhood agreement that every customer signs. The sec bulletin, which the sec is no friend of robinhood or anyone else, it says the same thing. On what grounds are you fueling this suit, jeff . Well, first of all, of course the sec is going to say that. Why . We have a system thats designed for the 1 to take advantage of the 99 . After 87, after 2001, after 2008 everybody says that they learned. And they go and figure out new ways to squeeze the last blood from the 99 . And in this case robinhood built a system that not only have they run into tons of problems for, theyve been fined by the s. E. C. , warned by adam sherman back in august about this system. Theyve crashed 17 times. They built a system that couldnt handle the kind of trading that they brought on. So they should have known. They probably did know that they would get this socalled Surprise Call in the middle of the night at 3 00 a. M. And certainly the people who are profiting off them, like citadel, who are buying their trades, very controversial, you know, process of basically what robinhood did is they got the best traders, the most valuable traders from market makers. So they turned the traders into products and their customers with the people who are paying them. So they may talk about democratising and they may talk about theyre making trading for all. But the truth is they were turning people into products and their customers were the people paying them hundreds of millions. I want to clarify two things, robinhood sells their order flow to Citadel Securities, not the hedge fund. Thats a legal practice. And one of the reasons people get turned into products is when theyre not paying anything. Im not a customer of facebook because i get facebook for free, im the product. If youre getting your trades for free youve got to pay somewhere. And sean, i want to ask you, because you filed the lawsuit on the 29th. And guess what . When robinhood first froze those trades it looked horrible to all of us. Saying What In The World are they doing . But then robinhood and dttc made it very clear it wasnt that they were targeting anyone, they were undercapitalized. They didnt have enough money to meet the Margin Requirements so they had to shut down. That doesnt mean that they were doing something nefarious. It means they were weak, it means they werent good enough to provide those services that they thought they could have so people shouldnt do business with them but its nothing illegal. Im not sure about that. Ceo vlad tenev went on with your colleague Andrew Ross Sorkin and, quote, there is no Liquidity Problems. The background here is not as clear as that might make it seem. Sir, im going to interrupt you for one second. He didnt have a Liquidity Problem, saying i dont have money to keep the lights on. They had a capital problem. They didnt have enough money to put up for these specific securities so you could still have twoway flow. A Liquidity Problem would be if i put that money up i wouldnt have enough money to keep this place operating. Id go out of business today. A Liquidity Problem and a Capital Requirement are two different things, sir. Its pretty clear if he didnt raise 3 billion in the last four days he would have been out of business. He would have broken his own bank and when push came to shove and he could choose between protecting himself, versus protecting his customers, he protected himself. Which is one thing i want to clarify at the outset you spoke the hedge fund actors behind here, behind this, its no surprise to me that the spokespersons are saying we had nothing to do with it. But the fact is they have a close relationship, all with one another, citadel controls 40 of robinhoods revenue. Melvin effectively is controlled by. 72 and citadel, given they just bailed them out. I would be shocked that. 72 didnt i also want to comment on the point about the user agreement. Robinhood did not restrict trade. Robinhood was conflicted and robinhood acted completely in its own selfinterest. It acted out of gross negligence, which is one of the theories in this case. It wasnt, you know, a necessary maneuver to protect the customers at all. They lined their own pockets, they protected themselves at the expense of their customers. I just want to remind our audience they had to restrict some trades, they werent able to take one side of the trade because there was no longer an available borrow on some of those shares. Thats really important to clarify. There are so many questions to ask. People do not feel good about citadel. Lawmakers want answers without a doubt. I want to ask you, people think about these people who went long, the reddit bros that couldnt get on sports games, thats not who the plaintiffs are, tell us who they are, jeff. The plaintiffs are school teachers, single moms, kids in college that are worried about their tuition. And, you know, before when you said, you know, its free so they have to be paid somehow, in fact thats what the sec fined them for. People dont realize that theyre being used to be sold. Theyre the exact type of traders that people like citadel want. And its very highly profitable. When you sell order flow youve reversed the incentives to get the best places, which is also what theyve been fined for before and what people are questioning. They push people to doing high risk strategies like options, normally when i trade, i have to get cleared on a second level to be able to do that. These guys from day one were able to have margin, they were able to which is borrowing, so they can get themselves in trouble. They were able to trade complicated strategies, including, you know, naked options and they were pushed to do it. And what happens is, those trades are the ones with the biggest spreads. And these guys, robinhood, from everything we understand, unlike other brokers who pay a set fee for every person, for every trade thats delivered but all these plaintiffs could have done business with any of those other brokers. They chose robinhood. Yeah, i well, i think that the different here they chose robinhood because they did not understand how robinhood was executing to take advantage of them. The crux of the lawsuit is, everybody wants to talk about these traders as children who, you know, they dont they dont understand about losing and winning. What they do what they expected was to have a level playing field. So when they were actually winning they were doing one of the hardest strategies on wall street, which is to execute a short squeeze. Very hard to do. And they were winning. Except they got out there, they were armed with robinhood and they got out there, they were winning, they had them on the run and its like they ran out of bullets. And they were just left there. To be victimized. Well, gentlemen, there are theres one thing weve got to leave it there. We are out of time. Please come back soon. As this situation develops there are a lot more questions we need to get answered. Up next, we told you two months ago how uc davis is working to keep coronavirus out of an entire city. The director of the program, associate dean for Public Health sciences at uc davis, dr. Brad pollock joins us now. Hows it going is this. Thank you for having me back, stephanie, appreciate it. Things are going quite well. Weve made quite a bit of progress since i was on the program last time. Now weve rolled out our testing for the last two months now to the whole community and its been quite successful. Weve detected about 850 cases of asymptomatic disease through our Testing Program, Community Wide Testing Program and that means thats 850 people that we hopefully have gotten off the street and not infecting other people. And weve been able to utilize our really fast crack Contact Tracing program along with getting people into appropriate isolation and quarantine. Are your numbers much lower than other parts of california . We think theyre lower. They do look lower. Well have to be doing much more careful analysis. When you look at the Dash Board Data that are published, those represent real rates but not necessarily adjusted for some of the things we normally do when we do epidemiologic analysis, age distribution is different, race, sex and ethnicity are different. When you do these dash boards it represents an amalgam on whats going on in the area but to do appropriate analysis you need to do adjustment for other factors to see if the rates are different. We will be doing that. But at face value the rates do look much lower than other parts of the county and other parts of california. But again, we havent done the definitive analyses yet. I think one of the issues is we have reached about half of the community. Weve had more than half of the folks in davis that have come in and gotten tested. Right now what weve been focusing last couple weeks is trying to get everybody in. That may not be possible to do everybody, but the more we have in, the larger the chances that were going to be able to catch one of those asymptomatic cases. What are you going to do with vaccines . Thats the 64 million question. One of the issues here is that we have some, i think, great plans in place, that well be putting in place but the problem is its Vaccine Distribution right now and it is very confusing. It was confusing coming in from the trump administration. Californias weve been treading water here and of course the first doses went out to health care systems, not to other entities. So and i have been lucky, Uc Davis Health we were one of the recipients of doses and we got a lot of doses into peoples arms, we did about 14,000 in the course of about three, 3 1 2 weeks. Thats great. But we dont know where the vaccine is going to be coming from. For the project what were doing right now is trying to plan for the appropriate infrastructure to make it efficient. When we do have our supply we want to be able to go quickly and be able to vaccinate as many as possible. And when you do, were going to come back in and check on you, dr.
