The question is, does he have a defense for the actual charge against him . House Impeachment Managers are arguing that Donald Trumps responsibility for the events of january 6 is, quote, unmistakable. While the former president s lawyers countered by denying the allegations and calling the whole trial unconstitutional. In detailing their case for why the former president should be convicted and permanently barred from office, the legal briefs linked trumps faufls claims that the election was stolen and his baseless efforts to overturn the results to the deadly riot. They write that the only honorable path at that point was for President Trump to accept the results and concede his electoral defeat. Instead he summoned the mob To Washington and aimed them like a Loaded Cannon Down pennsylvania avenue. They conclude with this, failure to convict would embolden future leaders. And there is no line that president cannot cross. The senate should make clear that it stands ready to protect them against a president who promotes violence. And in a response just 14 pages long, trumps legal team essentially argued that the former president believed that he won the election and was within these rights to, Quote Express his belief that the Election Results were suspect. They contend that his claims couldnt be disproved because there was insufficient evidence. They also argue, quote, the article of impeachment violates the 45th President s right to free speech and thought guaranteed under the First Amendment to the United States constitution. They also laid out a challenge to the constitutionality of the trial now that trump is no longer president. There is the First Amendment and then there is yelling fire in a crowded movie theater. One is protected, one is not. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi yesterday sent a letter to democratic colleagues detailing efforts to shore up capitol security and calling for a 9 11 Style Commission to investigate the january attack on the capitol. She also called for additional funding to meet security needs. On the senate side, dick durbin of illinois and Chuck Grassley formally requested answers from the Justice Department about Security Failures during the insurrection. They also announced the committee will hold a hearing with fbi director Christopher Wray on march 2. And last night, the remains of fallen officer Brian Sicknick arrived at the u. S. Capitol for the rare distinction of lying in honor of the buildings rrotund. Sicknick died from injuries suffered in the violence siege. And President Biden attended to pay his respects. His attendance wasnt announced until his motorcade departed the white house and jill biden joined him. And Chuck Schumer could also be seen among those in attendance. Sicknick is the third Capitol Police officer to lie in monitor at the capitol. A congressional tribute will be held this morning before a ceremonial departure to Arlington National cemetery. Were all mourning the loss of this man. And members of the house of representatives will now be fined for not complying with Metal Detectors if before they enter the house floor a move that comes one month after the capitol hill riots. The new rule include as 5,000 fine for first time offense and a 10,000 fine for a second offense. Nancy pelosi released a statement, in part, it is sad that we have been forced to move forward with a rule change imposing fines on those who refuse to abide by these protections. But the peoples house must and will be safe so that we can honor our responsibility to do the peoples work. And sources in the white house and on capitol hill tell nbc news that democrats hope to have an Economic Relief bill passed by march 14th. That is the day that extended Unemployment Benefits will run out for millions of americans. And while the president hopes to get more republicans on board, a senior white house official says it seems increasingly likely that democrats will use reconciliation to pass the bill without republican support. Key democratic senator joe manchin helped lay the ground work for that yesterday voting with his party to proceed to a budget resolution, but he wants the final bill to be targeted to those who most need relief. Manchin is also against raising the minimum wage to 15 which is included in the biden plan. And the senator tells reporters that he will be supportive of something that is responsible and reasonable like 11 an hour. And the Washington Post reports that on a call with Senate Democrats yesterday, President Biden urged them to go big on his new nearly 2 trillion stimulus proposal. And that comes a day after he met with Senate Republicans to talk about their much smaller plan. Joining us now, reporter for the Washington Post, eugene scott. Eugene, good morning to you, there are a lot of options here in terms of what to talk about this morning as we follow news here on multiple fronts. But i want to talk about something that i know youve been covering which are these arizona republicans who are digging in on the trump version of the party as all of this looms. And it is really what is happening there is a microcosm, an example in one state that shows us what is really happening at the national level. And were sitting here waiting for Kevin Mccarthy to make a decision about what he will do, what side that he is going to take. What do you think what is happening in arizona says about that and what is your reporting on mccarthys latest thinking . You are right, we can focus on arizona republicans to get a better idea of what could be happening in other parts of the country especially what is happening in washington and a testament to that is how republicans are responding to the Biden Administrations efforts to get the Coronavirus Package changed. You are seeing many republicans show that even after he has left the white house, members of their party are still incredibly loyal to trump and believe that putting his ideas about what makes America Great forward is in the best interests of their party. But when we look at the Election Results, that is not the case. And one thing that is interesting about arizona which went blue for biden and now has two Democratic Senators in washington is that they havent gone blue since 1996. So you would think that it would be difficult for them to hold this pivot. But republicans continue to move in a direction that many voters on the ground in arizona and also across the nation are saying that they dont want. And so this could suggest that the gains that republicans may have experienced in the last few years, that they have just recently lost, they may continue to lose if they dont change the direction in which they are going. And to that very point, i think this helps explain what Mitch Mcconnell said over the course of the last 24, 48 hours where he put out first a statement saying that he thinks that liz cheney is a person of conviction and courage, and then saying that they cannot be a party that has a Conspiracy Theory cancer inside it, referring to Marjorie Taylor greene. And while search some we can debate why he is putting out these statements, but certainly part of it is that he looks at exactly this phenomenon and he says we wont win elections if we keep putting people like Marjorie Taylor greene to the forefront. He blames donald trump for those losses in georgia. And so with that in mind, how do you think that impanlgtss the upcoming Impeachment Trial in because mcconnell has signalled that he is willing to convict donald trump, but it doesnt seem like that is enough right now to bring his party along with him. Why . It isnt. Because as influential as a voice as mcconnell is, it is not more influential than many of the voters who sent these people To Washington. And many voters hold the ideology that we see in Marjorie Taylor greene. One thing i dont think people realize, the number of independents is growing because of the number of republicans who have left the gop after they have seen it go i guess more trumpy, and it left a more trumpier version in the party and they are more likely to back the Marjorie Taylor greenes of the world than somebody more moderate and thinking about engaging the democrats. It will be an interesting few weeks for sure as we learn more about how the Republican Party will try to sort through this or not and just move forward with what you just outlined here. One of those policies is known as remain in mexico, that makes the that forces Asylum Seekers to stay in Northern Mexico before they can come to the United States and prove their case for asylum. They are not enrolling new people in that, but they are saying that they need to review that policy before they just automatically allow Tens Of Thousands of people who are waiting at our border to come into the United States. So a lot of reviewing. And also a told a big reason for that is because they dont want the legal fights. They dont want to be like the Trump Administration that came in, you can remember january of 2017, the chaos at the airports during the travel ban on the majority muslim country, and then the legal challenges that followed. They wanted to be more methods cal and they also, and i dont think that you will hear this on the record from many of them, but they are worried that there could be a run on the border if the message gets out that they are all of a sudden allowing more people in and things are getting easier to get into the United States. Their message right now is to say stay where you are, we are reviewing the policies, in time if you do qualify for asylum, you can come to the United States and apply in an orderly fashion. Amid growing pressure to act, House Minority leader Kevin Mccarthy met with Marjorie Taylor greene last night over her incendiary comments and conspiracy theories. They spent about 90 minutes together in mccarthys office and aides offered no immediate comment afterwards. The house gop Steering Committee also met late last night. The Steering Committee which is led by mccarthy is the group that picks which committees republican members sit on, they can also take away any assignments. Two sources tell nbc news that nothing was decided at last nights meeting are regarding congresswoman greene. This is not taken lightly, this is something that is very, very serious. We would hate to create a horribleprecedent. But there is precedent. And specifically based her committees dealing with education, having a disregard for the facts about parkland, disregard for basic human de desense decency, claiming that parkland is created for the purpose of politics. So that needs to be looked into. And im hoping that the republicans take care of their own, but in the event that they do not, we need to take this issue up. Certainly in my reporting it has been explained as essentially an ultimatum and if mccarthy does not take action before midday today, this may unfold in the rules committee and then on the floor of the house. You mentioned that you are a Freshman Congress woman. And id like to get your take on how your term started out here. Because you would have been in Congress Just a handful of days before the capitol siege. Where were you as that unfolded, what were you thinking as somebody who was very new to the job as that was happening . And what do you think should happen next here in terms of the trial in the senate . It was a wild couple we call impeachment, inauguration all in a couple weeks. And i was in my office, i was very, very lucky to be in my office, im in the longworth building, we were not evacuated, but i was in my office with the blinds down and doors locked for 13 hours. The best part of the evening was that around 8 00 after the police had cleared the insurrectionists, we decided, and it wasnt me because im a freshman, but the leadership went on and we did our constitutional duty and we had a peaceful transition of power. S powerful speeches on the floor. I sat and watched cspan and the Senate Speeches in particular for powerful. And we did what the constitution required. So proud of former Vice President mike pence, nancy pelosi, Mitch Mcconnell. Their lives were in danger and they got back up and they did what was required of them for the good of the country. And so did we. Right now we have got to focus on this coronavirus. It is the most important thing. And that is what we are doing. We went back to the district. I can tell you i spent hours. We had a Town Hall Meeting with 800 people talking about the coronavirus. Ive spoken with my main hospital administrators, Community Health clinics, constituents. We have got to get this virus under control. Im so glad the Biden Administration finally has a National Coordinated plan so that we can take care of our people, get them healthy, and get them safely back to school and back to work. This is some intrigue youre going to love. So congressman adam schiff of my home state of california, of course, chairman of the house intelligence committee, wants to be the California Attorney general. So here are some dominos. Kasie, of course, right now the California Attorney general is Xavier Becerra, President Bidens nominee to be hhs secretary. Adam schiff has asked for that job because it would best set him up to run for senate to take Dianne Feinsteins seat. So thats whats on his mind. Lets talk about Something Else you have coming out in the newsletter this morning and that is how the pandemic is affecting unions. What are you reporting on this question . Kasie, you report so much on power ebbing and flowing. And at the time that i came up covering politics unions were a much bigger factor, especially in democratic politics. They of course have been on the wane for years now. But kasie, look at these new figures that axios is reporting. The percentage of workers who say that theyre in a union is up to 11 now. Why is that . Union workers were more likely to be able to keep their jobs during the pandemic. Unions did a good job of enacting and enforcing protections for workers. A little twist to this after all those union losses and you and i have both covered so many Labor Day Events over the years where we see that power on display. After years of losing power, theres a couple new places that unions are gaining. One is among tech companies. We saw google workers organize. And the other is warehouse operations, which of course are growing around the country as Ecommerce Footprints grow. Yeah, for sure. All of the boxes that we get from amazon i know and we have covered extensively some of the challenges that those workplaces have faced. So, mike, quickly, youve also reported on the lack of representation that fortune 500 companies have at the very top. Of course, these stories kind of connected. What can you tell us about diversity in the ranks there . Yeah, youre right, kasie. This is another sign of like a rising powers in our society. So, since fortune started doing the fortune 500 back in 1955, there have been 1800 different ceos on there. Kasie, of those 15 have been black ceos and 4 have been women. Theres just a fourth roz brewer next month will become the ceo of cbs is part of that trend. Why is this happening . You look at these figures and this is causing corporations to dig in to how they recruit, how they promote. You look at this obvious Systemic Program in these stance and they look at things like how can they make sure that theres a more diverse opportunity around the ceo to give them that lift.
