Her to be expelled, today greene said she will not back down, will not apologize, and in fact, tweeted that of course she talked to former President Trump and she is grateful for his support. With that, i want to bring in nbcs Marianna Sotomayor. And amanda. Where are we on this . All week long, folks have been calling for Marjorie Taylor greene, essentially, to step down with all this controversy surrounding her. What do we know so far . Reporter hey, that is right, yasmin. Well, democrats can do three Different Things with one likely option and that is censuring her. That would basically be equivalent to a slap on the wrist with the house denouncing her actions as well as saying that they hope she resigns. Given, like you mentioned, a number of those examples of the things that she has previously said before she was in office, however, we should note that since she took office, now congresswoman cori bush of missouri is accusing her of actually verbally attacking her. She described it as berating her after bush asked greene to put on a mask, something that republicans are not abiding by here on capitol hill. And bush has said, and actually has expressed what a lot of democrats here are saying, that they no longer feel safe in their own offices. Bush telling our own joy reid yesterday that she has worked in many different work spaces and she has never felt so threatened as she has now with folks besides greene already taking office, and acting in these very different ways that do not usually follow the typical decorum here on capitol hill. Bush actually asked Speaker Nancy Pelosi for her office to be moved. Its something that doesnt happen that often, especially early on in a congressional term. But pelosi herself even saying, in a press conference, that, quote, the enemy is within the house of representatives. So, democrats very much having this feeling that they dont feel secure. That is why they are pushing for this censure motion. But theyre also calling for congresswoman greene to be completely expelled. That likely wont be happening just because there arent enough republican votes to do that. However, minority leader Kevin Mccarthy could pull greenes Committee Assignments from her, and they are expected to meet next week and have a, quote, conversation. Its unclear exactly what the minority leader will do. However, we have seen a number of republicans who have stood up to the president and as you mentioned, greene has the support of the president , so if republicans were to buck her or as they have in impeaching the president , they could face some backlash. However, we are hearing from senator mitt romney, obviously, in the other chamber saying, in response to that, he actually tweeted, saying, quote, lies of a Feather Flock together. Talking about trump and greene. But of course, not enough support right now to potentially expel her, but democrats and some republicans hoping that any kind of Censure Movement can indeed quiet and hopefully quell the rising tensions that are happening here on capitol hill. Yasmin . Amanda, youre in the congresswomans district. What are they saying . Reporter yeah, yasmin, we spent some time here in the 14th congressional district, which Marjorie Taylor greene actually won by close to 75 of the vote in november. To set the political context, that was after a gop Primary Runoff where she faced a fellow trump supporting republican, john cowen. I spoke with him yesterday and he actually told me he tried to raise concerns to over gop leadership. While they shared similar values and conservative values, he also supported the president at the time, as i mentioned, but other congressional and gop leaders that he spoke with, he said, as he was trying to get those endorsements, they didnt take the Warning Signs around her rhetoric and her actions, which he has been raising the alarms on since then, if not before. And as we know, much of her political rhetoric and actions have been widely documented throughout her political career, so spending some time here in her district talking to constituents on either side of the aisle, trying to understand further, in light of the scrutiny and reporting around her comments and actions if they feel any differently so constituents on both sides, take a listen to what they said. She supports the constitution. Thats my main concern. Theres so many that dont support our constitution and want to tear it apart. Shes an embarrassment and shes shes an outrage to, really, decent behavior. And im just sorry that that is what our district is becoming known for. Shes an embarrassment to rome. Shes an embarrassment to the state of georgia. Shes an embarrassment to the house of representatives. In my judgment, she ought to be expelled. Reporter so you can hear there, for those that are supporting her, saying that they decided to side with her because of her defense of the constitution, of the second amendment, things of that nature, whereas others who dont want to be associate with her now all the more and looking for that additional action. As marianna noted, we dont have signs a censure will be brought against her and she doubles down, tweeting that she spoke with former President Trump earlier today, has his support, thanked him for it and said that she is 100 loyal to him. Yasmin . I mean, even the big question of will Republican Leaders speak out against her, even going so far as that, we dont even know. Nbcs Marianna Sotomayor and amanda golden, thank you so much. Were going to get reaction on this controversy from a parent who lost her son in a school shooting. Nicole hackley with Sandy Hook Promise is going to join us live. You dont want to miss that conversation. Im also going to talk to florida congresswoman Debbie Wasserman schulz. So a lot ahead. Moving now to january 6th. And two members of the group facing charges for their role in the capitol hill insurrection. The indictment against dominic and william is the first riotrelated case accusing proud boys members of working together to attack the capitol. Among the charges listed is conspiring to interfere with Police Officers defending the capitol. Also new Body Cam Video obtained by the New York Times this week showing yet another view of that brutal fight between rioters and officers at a central entryway to the capitol earlier this month. It also shows rioters in an effort to attack Police Trampling over fellow trump supporter rose ann boyland, ignoring her friends cry for help as she lay there dying. Save her. Save her. Shes dying. Shes dying. Help. I need somebody. And again, nearly three and a half weeks out and just more and more devastating video emerging from the capitol hill insurrection. It just does not stop. The fbi has released a new Wanted Poster of individuals theyre still looking for in connection to that insurrection. You see it there on your screens now. And as extremist threats persist more than three weeks after the violent riot, the pentagon has announced that more than 5,000 National Guard troops are going to remain in d. C. Through at least mid march. While the Capitol Grounds remain on high alert, the Capitol Hill Police chief is calling for a permanent fencing around the capitol. Nbcs Vaughn Hillyard joins me now from outside the capitol. I got to tell you, vaughn, good to see you, by the way, its completely astounding to think about permanent fencing being put around the capitol. It completely changes historically the landscape of the capitol but it really speaks to the times that we are in. Reporter youre right, yasmin, and its not just the Capitol Building that were talking about. This Capitol Complex includes senate and house office buildings, so when folks from states come here to washington, d. C. , they typically have the chance to go and enter their Representatives Office and either speak to the member directly or the staff but right now, this perimeter that is continuing to be in place here in washington, d. C. , expands beyond those offices. Theres now two layers of fencing that still keep folks away from the Capitol Steps and we were here as folks had posted some signage, antifence signage, and Capitol Police came and removed those signs here, because theres pushback from lawmakers, particularly folks in the neighborhood, the capitol hill neighborhood, who have pushed back against this idea of Permanent Fence raised by Law Enforcement, including the Acting Police Chief of the Capitol Police. You know, we should note, theres the a lot that is still unknown by Law Enforcement. There have been more than 140 individuals charged by the Department Of Justice in conjunction with the january 6th attack, but you know, theres the likes of the individual who placed the pipe bombs at the Democratic Party headquarters and Republican Party headquarters. The night before the insurrection that is still yet to be identified. The fbi over the last 24 hours increasing the reward, 100,000. Theyve released new photos from Surveillance Footage that shows this individual. Again, there is still a large effort under way to identify individuals as the department of Homeland Security warns of continued, persisting Domestic Extremist threats. You know, National Guard will be here until at least midmarch, the pentagon is now announcing. More than 7,000 National Guardsmen and women are still here in washington, d. C. For the washington, d. C. , area, January Of 2021 has been a difficult one and now those serious conversations are going on between Law Enforcement and lawmakers as to what security will look like Going Forward here around the capitol, yasmin. Yeah, i remember, vaughn, just quickly here, anecdotally, as i was there for the inauguration, talking to foekds that were out there watching the inauguration happen from outside the bounds of that fencing and i talked to them about what it felt like to live in a city and there b through so many inaugurations and seeing the city on lockdown and they felt like it was so sad but needed and hearing their city, im sure, is going to be essentially guarded until at least midmarch and who knows if thats going to be extended, im sure its not necessarily encouraging for a lot of d. C. Residents, but also again, representative of the times. My friend, Vaughn Hillyard, good to see you, my friend. I want to get now to the fight against the coronavirus. First, maryland announced a short time ago that it has confirmed a case of the South African Variant Becoming The Second State after South Carolina to test positive for the strain. Second, starting late monday, a cdc mandate says masks must be worn on all Public Transportation across the country. The mandate applies to what you would expect, trains, planes, buses, ferries, which also includes the stations and terminals where you get on. It also goes a step further, requiring masks for taxis and Ride Hailing Services like uber and lyft as well. Then we go down to florida. Plans to expand Vaccine Distribution there through a partnership with Publix Supermarket have been changed. The decision is coming days after public outcry over Vaccine Equity for communities of color and lowincome with limited access to publix locations. Cory coughman is outside a publix for us. What more do you know about this . Reporter yasmin, good afternoon. Yeah, this original idea behind this Pilot Program was originally presented by Governor Ron Desantis and he wanted to start in Palm Beach County and his whole idea was, okay, we got to get these vaccines out more quickly to seniors, 65 and older, some 4. 5 million seniors. And so, you know, what better way to do it than publix . Theres a lot of publix locations. The problem is his announcement was solely for publix to do the vaccinations in this county, not for any County Health Sites to be able to do. Now, that drew a lot of outcry because county officials said, listen, this isnt a fully fleshed out plan. It is not equitable. There are not publix locations in every community. Rural communities, poorer communities do not have access to this as much. So, after much discussion and much criticism, the governor has reversed his stance and now it will be a partnership between the county and publix locations, so there will be more distribution through Public Health sites in these rural communities. But there is still an Uphill Battle with the medical community trying to get these seniors vaccinated. Listen to how one Health Official described this challenge in their state right now. The demand is far more than supply. The appointments right now are a bit of an issue, as youve seen through regionwide. We started out doing them by telephone, as did many of the other counties. That crashed the telephone systems. Not only in hernando but in pasco and throughout the region. So were doing a lot of that manually right now, until we can get a system up and running. We didnt know how much vaccine we were going to get until, like, two days before, so its very difficult to plan to do that. And i dont think thats anyones fault. I think thats just how fast the vaccines coming out. Reporter all right, yasmin, and states should get a muchneeded injection with more vaccines flowing in each state under the Biden Administration and his plan to up Vaccine Distribution. Florida now receiving some 307,000 doses next week. Thats about 40,000 more than the week before. Yasmin . Cori coffin for us, good to see you. Coming up at 4 00 p. M. , were going to track the vaccine, a look at the situation on the ground in the state of massachusetts. And then a big picture look at the effort across this country. You dont want to miss that. Obviously, vaccines are incredibly important right now in the fight against this pandemic. Still ahead, everybody, gamestop game stock. Markets gone wild. Gamestop up another 130 today. The gamestop controversy, its triggering the most intense scrutiny of wall street since the mortgage crisis. Some are characterizing it as the Revenge Of The Nerds or what happens when an army of Internet Users decides to stop some of americas biggest Financial Institutions from bankrupting a company and then eliminating jobs outright. Just to turn a quick profit. It is shining a light on what many are calling the inequality of finance in this country, and angering a lot of lawmakers as well. Democratic representative ro khanna released a statement saying, we are done letting Hedge Fund Billionaires treat the stock market like their personal playground, then taking their ball home as soon as they lose. American inequality is at new levels. Thanks for joining me on this. Really appreciate it. Before we get started on this conversation, i just want to read for you something that your colleague, senator Elizabeth Warren, said this morning, i believe. She spoke with my colleague, tiffany cross, about gamestop and she said this. And i quote, what gamestop shows is that the Wall Street Game is rigged, and its been rigged for years now. Hedge funds have been taking advantage of giant corporations have been taking advantage of it, excuse me. Joint corporations have been taking advantage and individual investors over and over catch the short end of the stick and what happened before now is not what one wanted to hear if they just kept covering their ears up. So, it seems as if both you and senator warren feel as if this is a good thing that this happened with gamestop, because it showed what is really happening, whats really going on, and the inequality that exists. Yasmin, i would say that the Retail Investors who got hurt, we should sympathize with them but it did expose how rigged the game is and senator warren has been brilliant about pointing that out consistently for years. What you have is hedge funds who short a stock, then they come on television, chose like yours, and they tell everyone, go sell. And they have a stake in it. And theyre basically manipulating the system. And we need regulations. I mean, we need two things. One, we should have higher Capital Requirements before hedge funds are allowed to do this. We should have the uptick role thats that will help stop the shorting. The whole thing is being rigged for hedge funds to exploit the system. The thing is, many people argue this has been happening for quite some time, as you bring up, you know, senator Elizabeth Warren has been someone whos been arguing about this inequality. Why has it taken an event like gamestop to move this the needle on this, to move this conversation to the forefront when so many people knew this was happening for so long . I think it exposed the fundamental unfairness. When people saw that finally some Retail Investors, ordinary people who were trying to actually get in the game, and when they finally do something, then the hedge funds come and dont even allow them to trade, then robinhood doesnt allow them to execute buys, clearinghouses stop executing their trades, so i think it just highlighted the fundamental inequality and how much power these hedge funds have. And then it made us think, what is all this money going for . Its not anything productive. Its not creating manufacturing jobs. As you pointed out earlier, its actually destroying jobs, what these hedge funds are doing. Its predatory shorting. No one is saying that you cant have fair transactions, but these are traders who are engaged in the speculation just to turn a quick buck. Its not that theyre being thoughtful investors like Warren Buffett or other institutional investors. I heard that you feel hedge funds urged robinhood to stop trading, despite the ceo of robinhood said they did not do this at the direction of any market maker, and i quote. I think there are questions that are unanswered. One, did hedge funds tell the clearinghouses to stop having the trade . So, as you know, robinhood works with the clearinghouses. The clearinghouses stopped executing the trades. So what we dont know is did the hedge funds coordinate with the clearinghouses. Second, the ceo is using legalese. He says they did not have the direction of any of the hedge funds but were there any conversations . Was there any consideration of what the hedge funds would think . The robinhood makes its money by giving data to hedge funds. Was that part of the deliberation . So there are a lot of unanswered questions. But what the whole what we do know is that the rules are tilted towards the hedge funds and that the Retail Investors were the ones at the short end of the stick. So i guess the big question is, what changes actually need to happen and how they can happen when wall street is so incredibly powerful. Congressman ro khanna, appreciate this conversation. Hope we can have more of it. Coming up in our next hour, an explanation of how this gamestop story started and where its going next on wall street. That means the 1. 9 trillion aid package so Many Americans are counting on would not be significantly pared down. Nbcs monica alba is joining me outside the white house. Monica, thanks for joining us this afternoon. Where are we on a possible Relief Package getting passed . Reporter well, at this point, yasmin, thats right, democrats have sort of decided if they cant get any republicans to join them, they will have to essentially go it alone, and because they currently control both the house and senate, that is an option that they have. Of course, candidate joe biden campaigned on leading through bipartisanship and unity and once he was elected, over the last, obviously, several months and then the last ten days since he took the oath of office, he has again reiterated his desire to have this 1. 9 trillion package be supported by both parties, but quite frankly, its just not quite there yet when it comes to republicans. So, in his clearest acceptance already, yesterday, that weve heard from the president , he did signal that even if republicans wont get on board, covid relief has to get passed, no ifs, ands or buts is what he told reporters, essentially saying that he will clear the way for majority leader chuck schumer, whos already indicated theyre prepared to do this, but to essentially fast track the legislation through a process known as budget reconciliation, which doesnt require republicans and that could happen as early as next week. But we know that also there are some key deadlines that come in the next week or so when it comes to the Second Senate Impeachment Trial of former President Trump, and then if you look at the calendar, which you see on your screen there, that kicks off in earnest on february 9th. So not a whole lot of time and thats why the white house did start out saying, we want bipartisan support, but now, we acknowledge that the urgency and the time factor is actually whats more critical and so they may have to sacrifice bipartisanship in order to achieve this in a more timely fashion. But we dont yet know what kind of outreach President Biden might be doing this weekend. We know behind the scenes he has been calling some republican senators. We dont know, though, what he may be doing on this Given Weekend where he has no Public Events so far, yasmin, but next week, we expect to see him head to the State Department on monday where he will meet with the newly installed secretary of state, tony blinken, and also deliver a major Foreign Policy address and then on tuesday, were going to see the president sign some of those last of the executive actions. Hes done nearly 40 of them since taking office. Tuesday is expected to be a Focus On Immigration and setting up that task force that will seek to reunify families that were separated at the Mexican Border under the trump administration, yasmin, and then on friday, we expect to see President Biden talk about the jobs numbers and the economy, so he still is going to now be talking about domestic and Foreign Policy objectives while all the while in there threading a needle of how this covid Relief Package could still get passed, but it might only take democrats at this point, since republicans have not shown broad support for it at this point, yasmin. Yeah, i mean, relief could really help Many Americans right now as communities are remaining closed across this country from the midst of this pandemic with a slow rollout as well. Nbcs monica alba, thank you. Lets talk about the Restaurant Industry. They are confronting unprecedented losses due to this pandemic. The most pronounced of which are felt by Service Workers in New York City. Thousands saw their jobs evaporate when covid shuttered restaurants. Now as the city prepares to reopen Indoor Dining, those who did not lose their livelihoods, they face an impossible choice, quit or continue to work in highrisk environments with no promise yet of a vaccine. My colleague, stephanie ruhle, spoke to some of those Restaurant Owners about the challenges they and their employees have experienced. Watch this. Covid19 has made business very difficult in washington, everywhere else across america and the world. Reporter 2020 should have been a record year. The National Restaurant association forecast 899 billion in sales. The actual total, just 659 billion. And less revenue means fewer jobs. We lost 11 employees this month alone. And its hard. Reporter with me now is natalia, a new york Restaurant Server and organizer for the restaurant organizing project. Natalia, thanks for joining us on this. Really appreciate it. Boy, you guys have had a rough go. Im a new yorker myself. I love going out to dinner. And lunch and breakfast. And i have friends that are in the Restaurant Industry, and it is really tough. Its really tough with whats going on. Its completely changed communities across the city. And youre one of the thousands of new york City Residents or New York City Restaurant Workers that have had to deal with this. What does the city need to do, do you think, at this point, in order to make sure the industry survives . Yeah, i mean, ive seen firsthand how catastrophic this situation has been for restaurants, and i think that there needs to be a federal bailout of restaurants that helps Restaurant Workers and restaurant businesses so that we can get through this time and get to a thriving industry again. But i do think that the Indoor Dining situation is extremely concerning. I think any shortterm benefits that could come from opening Indoor Dining in terms of generating more benefits for Business Owners is, in my opinion, overridden by the seriousness of the health risks. Theres two new strains. We dont yet know how theyre going to interact with the vaccine and study of study shows that Indoor Dining is linked to very high Risk Clusters of covid spreading and is not a safe activity. One of the things that i have been taking inspiration from is the chicago Teachers Workers who are saying, you know, we want to be back in the buildings teaching, but we want to be back in the buildings when its safe. And theyre willing to take action to make sure that workers and the community are not put in harms way with in rush to reopen while the Virus Spreads and mutates and obviously, restaurants dont serve the same Social Function as schools do. But our industry, i believe this is also an issue of workplace and community safety. Its interesting because you would think that someone like you would want Indoor Dining to resume as quickly as possible because it means people going back to work, restaurants staying open, get close to paying their bills, although 25 Indoor Dining as of February 14th doesnt really help you pay your bills that much considering the overhead for New York City restaurants. But nonetheless, do you feel i had you feel scared in situations when you were having to serve folks indoors amidst this pandemic . And do you think Restaurant Workers should be considered First Priority in getting vaccinations so people can get back to work . I mean, im very lucky in the sense that im not currently working. My boss made the decision that even if the restaurants are regulated to be able to be opened, shes not going to do it because she doesnt think its safe. And its been a hard its been a very hard winter for our restaurant. You know, its surviving on takeout and on delivery. But at the same time, my boss has a family. I have a family. We want to be alive for our families. And the reality is that any Indoor Dining should be should happen after vaccines are distributed, not before. Natalia, thank you. Good luck to you and thank you for all that you do. I hope you can get back to work soon, safely and with your health. Thanks, natalia. The challenges for Restaurant Owners to keep their doors open is not any easier. Joining us now, marcus samuelson, owner and head chef of red rooster in harlem. Thanks for joining us. Really appreciate it. Love your food. Just got to say that. Thank you, thank you. Before we get started. Havent been up there in a while, but man, do i love it. So, give me your reaction to what we just heard from natalia because it is pretty interesting to hear someone who works in the Restaurant Industry not wanting to see restaurants open for Indoor Dining again because of the Safety Concerns for people, especially that are working there. I think, you know, everybody has different opinions, and what the pandemic has really done is to it shows that, you know, we didnt enter this with the correct leadership, and we were weve gone back and forth many, many times, so we dont have one approach on this, and it shows that peoples going to respond to this very differently and were in a crisis that weve never been in before. And i think it will hit different in different communities, but what i can say as working and living and having my restaurant in a majority black and brown community, which all the communities are hit the worst. And if right now and proportionally its always been harder to get access to funding from banks and so on, and the black and brown businesses are going to have an even harder time to come back and those in the other communities and those are what folks are dealing with right now, with my team, how can we bring our business Back In Black and brown communities and thats really where my main focus is. People will enter this with completely different starting points of how they want to go back to work. I fully respect that. If youre not comfortable going back to work, you shouldnt go back to work. Its interesting, marcus, because your restaurant is an institution. Its historical. In the city. There are a lot of restaurants that dont necessarily have that standing as the red rooster does. How have you guys been doing through all this . How have you been surviving . Well, im completely realized every restaurant is different, and were also extremely privileged. We have a brand, both with the restaurant and myself, so weve done two things, stopped serving march 15th. Between march 15th and october 15th, we became a Community Kitchen and we served 225,000 meals in red rooster harlem. Weve done the same in newark and the same in miami and its been a privilege to serve our community. And on top of that, we actually, next week, were rolling out a fund, black Business Matters Matching Fund that would partner with uber eats and is really to give out grants to black businesses during this very, very difficult time, so i partnered with amazing chefs like kwame and Rodney In Charleston and compton in new orleans and sky in harlem, so four chefs together with uber eats will drive business to predominantly africanamerican businesses and through the fund, black Business Matters Matching Fund, uber eats stepped up and we want other companies to step up as well to create this Matching Fund that can give out grants because it needs to be a public and private partnership thats going to get us out of this. Its not just on the federal side. Its not just the local giveback. You need the private side as well. So, you know, for me, this is something that ive been working on throughout the whole year. Can i just quickly ask, we know Indoor Dining is going to return to New York City, i believe on valentines day. A lot of folks applauding that, but others, the director of the new york City Hospitality alliance, saying it needs to happen now. Every day matters. Where do you stand on that . You know, i want to go back to open the doors of a restaurant as soon as we can. Now, between today and valentines day, i dont think theres going to be another turn on this but the quicker we can get back, the better, and i completely hear the young lady before me, if youre not comfortable working, you shouldnt, but its also, you know, the Restaurant Industry is incredible, hardworking people that live check to check and need to support their families, and we, as Business Owners, should at least provide that option so the earlier we can open at this point, the better. Marcus samuelson, thank you, and look out for me because im coming there for a meal very, very soon. Thank you, marcus. Good to see you. Or you can order through uber eats. No, no, im coming. Im not doing it through uber. Im coming in person. Thank you, marcus. Coming up, everybody, what planned protests in moscow mean for the russian regime and the Biden Administrations policy on putin. You dont even have to put on shoes. Ooo easy peasy. You like that, huh . Mhm. Humana. A more human way to healthcare. Welcome back. More protests are expected across russia this weekend. Tens of thousands took to the streets last weekend, many braving temperatures below zero, some of the coldest places on earth, to call for the release of russian Opposition Leader navalny. This week, President Biden urged for the release of navalny and the white house says they also discussed Election Interference and the recent u. S. Government hack. This is coming as biden prepares for his first major Foreign Policy speech on monday. He is expected to discuss, quote, restoring americas place in the world. Boy, thats an Uphill Battle. Lets bring in former u. S. Ambassador to russia, michael, the author of surviving autocracy. Welcome to you both, guys, very much appreciate it. Im going to start with you on this one because we watched the crowds last weekend and it was so fascinating. There was this moment i think a lot of people were bracing for as to whether or not folks were actually going to join in the streets, rise up and protest in support of Alexey Navalny because of whether or not they worried for their own safety and in fact they did. They showed up in droves, in thousands upon thousands of people, bearing low temperatures and risking their lives in russia. What kind of threat does this pose to Vladimir Putin . So, the bad news, i think, is that protests do not pose a direct threat to the regime. The regime is like a black box. It is completely encapsulated and really in most ways impervious to pressure from the outside. And you know, even seen how it works on the example of neighboring belarus, which has seen sustained, unprecedented, incredible heroic protests now going on for six months, and the belarusian dictator, just keeps stomping around with his machine gun, literally, and cracking down and throwing people in jail and torturing them. And unfortunately, i think thats what were beginning to see in russia. Were beginning to see an unprecedented crackdown. Not that things were good before. But what were seeing is people getting arrested, including the editor of a leading opposition newspaper, which has been covering the protests, including all of navalnys closest allies are being held in jail. And you know, im afraid thats how the regime is going to respond. Masha, what is driving people to show up . What is driving people to revolt in russia right now . And what is driving someone like Alexey Navalny, who full well knows he may well not survive this time . He was lucky to survive the first time. I think navalnys bravery is part of whats driving these protests. Navalny has been navalnys message and his allies message at this point is very clear. Its, do not be afraid. Every social media post that they put up ends with the words, do not be afraid. Thats the only thing that they can use to oppose this regime. The regime has been counting on fear, has been counting on fear to keep information secret. A lot of what navalny has disclosed in the last week, in the last week and a half, we just had this incredible explosive influence on russia, is information that was known, right . But that people were afraid to put out in the open. And a lot of what navalny has done is, like, bring out into the open things that were known before but the things people could avert their gaze from. But now that theyre out in the open, theyre so obscene, theyre so upsetting that people feel that they will risk their lives to object to them because otherwise, it really robs them of any remnants of dignity. So, ambassador, as i was coming to both you and masha gessen, i spoke of how the president will be addressing the nation about how to change the place that we currently hold in the world, coming out of four years of a trump administration. And i find it ironic, considering whats happening in russia right now, the Uphill Battle that President Biden has right now when we look back on january 6th and the insurrection on the capitol and we look back on the history that russia has with this country, just in the last four years, and the case that needs to be made from President Biden even to president Vladimir Putin in saying, this cannot be happening in the streets of moscow when, in fact, things like that happened in the streets of the United States of america three and a half weeks ago under a trump administration. Well, youre right. That tragic event, january 6th, was a giant gift to putin and all autocrats around the world. It will keep on giving for years and years and years. The whataboutism conversations and that makes it hard for President Biden to speak up. Having said that, you know, the opposition in russia, mr. Navalny, the opposition in belarus, the oppositions to autocracies all around the world, they still want President Biden to speak up. They dont want him to wait for a decade until we get our house in order to be engaged in talking about democracy and human rights, and already in one week, President Biden has said more about Human Rights Violations in russia than President Trump said in four years. And i think thats a welcome change. Even addressing Vladimir Putin in that phone call about Election Interference, something that President Trump never did in his four years, even when meeting facetoface with Vladimir Putin. Former ambassador Michael Mcfaul and masha guessen, thank you both. Before we end this hour, a story of heroism in the face of adversity, a group of Healthcare Workers who would not let a brutal Snowstorm Stop them from administering valuable doses of modernas coronavirus vaccine. After vaccinating residents at a high school earlier in the afternoon, staff and volunteers from the josephine Public County Health team were headed back when the storm hit, leaving them stranded along the highway. The group had just six remaining doses left, which were set to expire if they did not make it back in time. Rather than letting those vaccines expire, the team decided to offer them to other stranded motorists. We were trying to explain that we had been at the mass vaccination event at the Illinois Valley high school and that we just had a few vaccines left over and since we were all stuck, we were giving them out and we were hoping that they might be interested in taking one. And some people were so excited. Both spectrums. And some people were like, no, go to the next car. Im not interested. Oh, my god.
