We have a ton of developments today in the Coronavirus Vaccine situation. What we do know is encouraging in many waysramping up vaccine production. What we dont know about the effectiveness is terrifying. It makes you wonder if the u. S. Needs to dramatically rethink the current Vaccine Distribution strategy. Lets start with the good news. Today johnson and johnson leased some promising data from its phase three clinical trials. The vaccine is 72 effective in the u. S. At preventing moderate to severe illness. Experts consider that a strong level of protection. Here is the potential worrying news. The company disclosed the data suggests the vaccine was less effective against the South Africa Covid Variant we have been dropping. Effectiveness dropped from 72 to 57 . Its called that because it was south africa was the first place it was found which is more contagious and resistant to the vaccines we have. Its already in the United States and appears to be spreading. The more contagious uk variant is spreading rapidly around the United States as well. A briefing which ended moments ago dr. Fauci said the spread of these variants should be wake up call for all of us in the United States. This is a wake up call to all of us that we will be dealing, as the virus uses its devices to evade pressure, that we will continue to see the evolution of mutants. This all tells us its an incentive to vaccinate as many people as we can as quickly as we can. All right. Lets build off that. Theres concern among some Health Experts that in this race against time and the variantsva this is race we are already losing. Dr. Michael olsterhom, a member of the disbanded Task Force Said on this show yesterday that the darkest of the darkest days actually lies ahead. Which is a sober analysis of time when 3300 people are dying on average every single day. He recommends we radically rethink our Vaccine Distribution strategy now to put all our focus on getting as many people as humanly possible the first dose of the vaccine so more people have some degree of protection as these variants spread. So far, the experts inside the Biden Administration say theres not enough data to show a shift in strategy would be worth it. On the data we do have, its too risky. Here is the concern from some. We dont have the data about how pref lents the strains are. We dont have data about how effective pfizers vaccine is. Some moderna could be highly effective after one dose but we dont know for sure. Were not confident that either up with of these two vaccines will be as helpful against the variants as well. Were almost a year into the pandemic and were back in a highly unsettling phase where were making critically important decisions of an incomplete picture of how bad things are and how much worse they could get. Theres a nagging feeling by the time we get everybody vaccinated, we have to vaccinate everybody again because of the va variants. Monica, coming out of the administration, theres a lot of anxiety that the, look at that New York Times map yesterday when there was a differentiation between high a high likelihood of getting or an extremely likelihood of getting it and it was the entire spread of the United States. How much thought is the Covid Task Force in the biden world thinking about radically changing our Vaccine Strategy . They are weighing a couple of different options. It was notable that the cdc director said we have to treat every new case as a possibly variant and there are all of these challenges that are sure to come not just from the uk vaiant which is in 29 states up from 26 a couple of days ago to the South African variant that is isolated in South Carolina but dr. Wolenski indicated she thinks theres Community Spread and its in far more states. By the time you get Somebody Tests and you have the results and get this information, think about the people they could have come into contact with. Thats why she and other white house officials have stressed that really its not the time for travel. They double, triple down on mask wearing even though this question remains about whats better. One mask, two masks, some people raising questions about triple masks. The white house official position is just wear a mask. Whether you add a second one to it is great but the most important thing is to wear a face covering. You had dr. Fauci today in this briefing saying that the johnson and johnson news is really encouraging for several reasons. Even though the lower Efficacy Rate may be concerning to some. He said you shouldnt think about it that way because its a single shot. Its incredibly cheap to produce and something they believe they can scale up quickly. He sees that as something that is very promising. Something else thats worrying people like dr. Fauci and cdc director is this question of now also Variants Chuck that can emerge in large american cities. This was presented to them as a major question of how worried should we be about a los angeles vaiant or a new york variant. Thats something they are tracking closely. Lastly, President Biden was asked in the oval office this afternoon what his reaction was specifically to the johnson and johnson Trial Numbers and he said he didnt want to get ahead oift. He wanted to speak to dr. Fauci and his medical team before weighing in but continue to stress the need for his Coronavirus Relief package to get passed through congress. It shows a departure from the last administration where now you have these Health Experts leading the briefings. Taking more of the questions on the science, data and vvaccines. We can expect those to take place three times a week. The next ones will be monday, wednesday friday with the same experts. Monica, do we have an idea what the timeline would be for johnson and johnson for the vaccine to be put into use . How soon do they file with fda and we are semifamiliar with that process once that begins it feels like its about a week. When does the clock start to tick there. Again, as we know in terms getting this, the Emergency Use Authorization is one thing but getting the final approval to then manufacture it and get it widely distributed is an entirely different one. While it will be likely a matter of weeks before we can see that, its closer to a matter of months before people will really start to have access in terms of the general public to getting this shot. That is why you have the white house before even getting the reaction to what was going to happen with johnson and johnson purchase additional pfizer and moderna vaccines in the hundreds of millions so they can get to their target but the bottom line and main take away is you have experts saying it will be a matter of months, not weeks, likely late summer, early fall by the time every one who wants a shot can get one. Monica getting us started from the white house. Thank you. I want to go to dasha who is in new jersey. We know theres a demand for vaccines to explain what is the hold up. How many of this is supply . How much is distribution . Explain where you are and explain what we thought we would be looking at today. Reporter im in the supply hub. This is where they have ppe, medical supplies and cooled storage for the Covid Vaccine. They have the capacity to store about a million doses in here but, chuck, i love to have you guess how many vaccines do you think are in this freezer right now. Yeah, im guessing somewhere near zero. Reporter lets take a look. Ive got my gloves on because it is pretty cold in here. Lets take a look. To shelf. Nothing in here. Yeah. Reporter bottom shelf, nothing in there. Nothing in the freezer next to it there either. Close this tight. Nothing in here. Chuck, theres not been a single dose of vaccine in any of these freezers here. They are getting right now about 1500 to 2,000 doses a week. Thats the allocation. It can pretty much fit in your College Dorm Room mini fridge. Thats the amount of supply they are getting now. Its across the board. We looked at the state level, city level, county level. The investment in infrastructure has been massive. A lot of it is sitting idle. We were at one of the six megasites in new jersey. The former racetrack at meadowlands where they can Vaccinate Thousands O Peechl a day. They are only using a fraction of that infrastructure. Its where i met the governor. He was touring the facility today. I asked him about this issue. Take a listen. Theyll do 80 vaccinations a day. They can do 2400. I have supreme confidence. What do you hope to see for this place and how soon do you want to see it . As soon as we can. Our hope is we get as close to 2400 a day as possible. I think its probably a minimum number of weeks away. Maybe a month or two but this place could do 2400 a day and will be doing it before long. Reporter a couple of months ago i was reporting on the preparation for this roll out. Back then i was asking county, hospitals can you really do this can you build out this infrastructure . Can you get your hands on freezers the answer has been in the places we have been reporting, yes. They have done that leg work. The thing thats missing now is the vaccine. Chuck. Dasha burns, theres a good sign that if the vaccine comes, theres a system ready to go. Were looking for vaccine. Let me bring in dr. Besser. I want to put up a graphic here. There is, we got the johnson and johnson vaccine. The pfizer is a 52 Efficacy Rate and moderna is 80 . Should we be going to battle right now with as many one shots as we can until we figure out a way to isolate these variants . Chuck, i think its going be really important to see the real data and fda for johnson and johnson before including that in the overall group. The number i saw was 66 from one dose. Your question still holds. I think its important to continue to consider all different types of strategies. One of the things that gave me real faith in the Pfizer Moderna vaccines is it went through an independent Review Process by the fda and the Advisory Committee and well want the see that with j and j. These vaccines were approved for twodose regimen. If were going to move beyond that to something else, id want to see the experts weigh in on that and say whats being done based on science . Whats being done based on modelling and concern about the pace of this pandemic . I dont like to weigh in without that kind of analysis. The committee that advises cdc On Immunization Practices will have a will the of things to consider. You have two vaccines that are 95 effective with two doses. You have one vaccine thats at 66 with one dose. Who do you recommend that vaccine for . How do you use these together . This is group at the cdc that is used to dealing with these kinds of questions because for a lot of im a pediatrician. For a lot of pediatric disease, you want do see from them what is the balance here between a very high level of protection with two doses and a slightly lower level of protection with one dose. How do you play that out . I think were having the wrong conversation. The focus is all about how many people are being vaccinated rather than who is being vaccinated. I saw a map of chicago and if you look by neighborhood, the highest Vaccine Rates are in the lowest neighborhoods for vaccination. You can say, wow, this state is doing a great job rolling out the vaccine but you got do ask who is being vaccinated. I think what were going to see with the way this is playing out right now is a widening disparity and increasing gap between people of color and others in terms of rates of ifection, hospitalization and death. Its so much harder to reach people who are working 9 00 to 5 00. Who dont have the opportunity to take off from work. Are we doing mobile clinics . Are we getting out to Community Clinics where a lot of people get care . Those are hard to do. How many doses did you do today rather than how many people of true increase risk did you vaccinate . Well see maybe increasing levels of vaccination but not the people who are keeping society going. People working in the Grocery Store and driving our buses. I want to know they are protected before people at lower risk. Were making a will the of decisions based on a perfect environment. We want to distribute the best of the vaccines. The best of the people. Were not in a perfect environment. Were in a war were losing. Were in a race were losing. We got the variants popping up faster than we can deal with them. It feels like a Whack A Mole Game thats out of control. It feels like by the time were getting vaccinated, well havec again. I think your assessment is on target. When you think about flu and the way we approach flu, we vaccinate everybody and we gear up and get ready to vaccinate again. Everywhere theres a committee that meets to say, okay, given the mutations that have occurred in flu, what should the vaccine look like there year. Theres a good chance that is whats going to happen with covid. Viruses mutate and if this one remains as effective in terms of being transmitted and mutating in ways that advance its ability to transmit, advance its abilities to elude vaccine, we will be vaccinated on an annual basis. One of the exciting things im hearing is that Vaccine Manufacturers are look at these mutation and already looking at how do they adjust those vaccines to make sure they are effective. The other piece of this, though is we may call this the South African variant but viruses dont respect borders. If we dont join the Global Community of trying to control this everywhere, the idea that just vaccinating people in america will keep us a safe is a misunderstanding of how viruses work. We have every selfinterest in doing all we can to make sure vaccines reach every country. Its selfinterest and humanitarian. Should we be fast tracking a study on moderna. Whether its a 66 or 72 coming out of johnson and johnson. Maybe one shot at moderna is a good idea too. I think that is an important question. You want to have vaccines that are a one shot vaccine that doesnt require Ultra Cold Temperatures is really a goal here. You want to be doing one shot studies looking at new vaccines that will be effective against the vaiant thats emerged from south africa. Its an ongoing race between us and the virus. I dont have as gloomy a picture as you in terms of losing this. We are starting the see numbers come down. We are seeing data that we can get children into schools. Thats going be great in terms of parents, especially moms being able to get back to work. There is some hope. Just the fact that we have vaccines that are going into arms a year into this pandemic i think is miraculous. I dont want to lose sight of that part. Fair enough. Im glad to know youre more optimistic than i am. I want to be optimistic too. Thank you for coming on. Pleasure. Up ahead, the vaccine view from the state level as governors trying to vaccinate as many people they can are running into tremendous roadblocks. Well talk with the governor of Mississippi Plus the pledge he made in this age of divided politics that caught my attention in the state of the state. We dont know what we get until next week like yesterday. We just found out yesterday that we can order today for next week. Were living on realtime inventory, at least we are. All these clinics that we have scheduled next week for the drive throughs, we schedule them based on anticipated inventory but we dont know for sure. Welcome back. That was the Mississippi State Health Officer thomas dobbs on the challenges that face all states. Mississippi governor said the state Vaccine Allocation is set to increase from 37,000 doses week to 43,000 doses a week. Hes hoping to double the states inoculation capacity. Mississippis republican governor joins me now. Its good to have you back. Let me ask you about your vaccine situation and frankly how are you prioritizing. How have you done this in every state slightly different. We know the cdc recommendation. Walk me through your process. Thanks for having me on. Its always a privilege to be on. One of the things that i want to point out is the progress that we have made in mississippi. Its progress that we are operating on just in time invenn inventory. We quit focusing on ensuring that we made sure that people we didnt think were eligible or we didnt think needed the vaccine got it and focused on getting more shots in arms. Right now in mississippi, we have allowed not only our health care workers, which is our number one priority and thats obvious because of our challenges in making sure we kept our hospitals fully staffed but the second thing we did is we opened it up to all those over the age of 75. We opened it up to all those individuals above the age of 65. We have done 202,000 first doses so far in our state. Of those, 120,000 have goes to those over the age of 65. Youre holding back some second doses. Have you thought about getting as many first doses in, letting the inventory run out and then worrying about the second dose later. Were talking internally about it. We put 202,000 in arms and we got over 10,000 appointments scheduled today and 30,000 appointments scheduled next week. Were truly operating at max efficiency in putting first doses in arms. We do have an adequate supply of second doses to ensure every one available for it gets it at the appropriate time whether thats 21 days later or 28 days later. The fact is, at this point the experts that have at pfizer, add moderna, the experts at the fda says the studies done were based upon two shots. The fact of the efficacy of moderna after one shot makes you take an opportunity to look at it. I dont think as governor thats a decision that i should make to overrule those individuals who have said that all of their data and all of their trials were based upon two shots. At this point, were not ready to make that decision. What point do you get to a situation where you say, i need more help with vaccinations. Id like to get fema to help. Is there a point you hope to get where i have too much vaccine and not enough people to do the shots. Theres no doubt that demand outstrips supply by a lot. We believe at some point in future and its probably months and months away well get to the point Supply Outstrips demand. In the short term over the next several months, i hope that the Biden Administration will not focus too much on distribution but will focus more on manufacturing because we need more vaccines. I have conveyed that and relayed that to their people and they understand my position on it. I appreciate that. Right now, we will deliver 63,000 shots last week. Our goal in february is to have the ability to do 100,000 shots per week. 400,000 shots in the month of february. As long as we continue getting the supply of the first doses, we can when thats combined with the people who will become eligible for their second doses well be able to meet that. It all is driven by supply. We have Distribution Mechanism in place, at least in mississippi. I dont know if other states are struggling with that or not. We that settled in our state. Okay. I love state of states. I try to watch and read as many of them as possible. Its been on display across our nation, too. Too often that leaves us to see one another as enemies. It leaves to corrosion in trust. We, as a people, cannot allow cruelty to win. Why did you decide the include that in your speech . Well, as you look at the political environment today, and this is true of people on both sides of the aisle. Oftentimes we focus on talking at one another rather than with one another. In our state were trying to bring people together. I have to brag on my fellow mississippians. Back during the summer we had very, very large rallies with black lives matter and others. Literally thousands of my fellow mississippians outside the Governors Mansion rallying. We didnt have one event that led to a felony or a misdemeanor. We had member of Law Enforcement handing out water, handing out masks. It was a peaceful protest. I will always defend every ones right to peacefully protest. There was arguments that around the country during the sunday before the inauguration we were going to see widespread protests. I dont know what happened in other parts of the country but we didnt have any trouble in our state. I believe we have got to be willing to understand and you know me, im a pretty hard core conservative. I believe very strongly in limited government and lower taxes. The fact is im going to fight for those ideals and principles i believe in but i dont want to see those who disagree with me as the enemy and i dont think anyone else should either. Governor, do you agree with senator romney who says a lot could be started if more republicans would tell the truth about the election. There was no fraud. It was one won fair and square by joe biden and plenty of courts agree with that. Do you think perpetuating that has made this situation worse . Well, again, i havent seen what senator romney had said. People op both sides of the aisle need to recognize we have to talk to one another. We have to be honest with one another. We have to understand that were going to disagree. There are items that are exceptionally important and issues that people feel very passionate about. We are all americans. I believe some of those on the other side that i disagree that they want whats best for america. I think we need to look at it from that perspective and try to find common ground. When we cant, we have got to fight for what we believe in. I understand that. I think we have to see the other side and by the way, its not just republicans who need the other side in that light. Democrats have to do the same thing. We have to focus on whats doing best for america. Do you believe President Biden won fair and square . I believe President Biden is our president. We have been in multiple meetings with people in his administration. Identify been very out spoken that i hope they will focus when it comes to vaccines. Not on distribution. We got that in mississippi. They need focus on making sure we get more supply but he is our president and well do everything in mississippi to work with him. A lot of people will notice you did not agree with the statement you didnt say either way whether you thought you won fair and square. Do you believe the election was won fair and square by joe biden . Theres no question. That President Biden is our president. He won the states. I will tell you that i am adamantly opposed to some of the expansion of mail in voting and things such as that. I dont think that some of the states who allowed for that, i dont think they should have. The fact is that i believe that it opens things up for frauds but the fact is that biden won those states. He was certified in those states. He was certified by congress and he is the president of the United States. All right. I will leave it there. Appreciate you coming on as you have in the past and for sharing your perspective with us. Always good to see you. Thank you. Thank you for having me on. Even with the Impeachment Trial looming, former president trumps grip on the party seems to be getting stronger. The Top Republican in the house met with trump yesterday. 22 days after trump inspired the capitol insurrection. Another republican traveled to wyoming to campaign against liz ey. That congressman did that after the House Majority leader supposedly told his members to not single out other members by name. While democrats are growing increasingly vocal about Marjorie Taylor greene. Cnn reported the freshman republican from georgia liked social media post supporting Political Violence against democrats including pelosi lers. She called the cnn story a hit piece on me focused on my time before running for Political Office which is issuing a nondenial denial. Im joined by our own garrett on capitol hill. The Marjorie Taylor greene situation, doesnt look like they will approach this the way they approached steve king. Is that fair to say . Reporter i think that is fair to say. The difference that is important to note is that greenes comments were before she was a member and i think sort of wildly known not the specifics of this social media post but its not as if she hid her light under the bushel here. Her most controversial views have been part of the selling point in what is the most conservative leaning districts in the entire country. Whether theres any stomach to strip her of assignments which is what happened to steve king or admonish her in some meaningful way, ive not seen it from any other elected member of the House Republican conference. Is there here is what im trying to figure out. I assume if there were a secret ballot, there would be a lot of House Republicans that would say this is a bridge too far. Are there more than just a handful speaking up or is this just not going to happen . Im not sure thats a safe assumption. I think this is the reality that were operating under here. If theres no Leadership Condemnation here. Theres no ground swell. Theres not even quiet off the record leaking. Its not like i know things but dont have members who are willing to go on the record come plaping about it to tell you about. This is part in parcel of a Republican Party, particularly in the house, that is a little bit unsure of their own base, of their own voters and the things they believe are pushing them. Thats part of the unsteadiness to condemn someone like greene. Theyre not sure how many of their own constituents believe to what she does. They fear their on voters. Theyre not quite sure where they voters are. They may know where they are but theyre afraid theyre not where their voters are. Well put. Thank you. Up next, well talk to one member of congress thats calling for Taylor Greenes expulsion from office. Enes expulsion from office. Is mealtime a struggle . Introducing oreida potato pay. Where oreida golden crinkles are your crispy currency to pay for bites of this. With this. When kids wont eat dinner, potato pay them to. Oreida. Win at mealtime. This is what Community Looks like. Caring for each other, protecting each other. And as the Covid Vaccine rolls out, well be ready to administer it. Got my hair w got my head administer it. Got my brains got my ears got my heart got my soul got my mouth i got life welcome back. As we said while representative Marjorie Taylor greene is facing scrutiny, republicans knew about her other comments months ago. Republican leaders discussed and then decided to ignore the early fears about greene who was a qanon support. Nbc news has not confirmed the supporting. She did endorse the School Shootings in parkland, florida and newton, connecticut were staged. Joined by Congressman Ted who is a democrat from florida. He represents parkland, florida. Hes among the democrats calling for greenes removal. Its good to see you. I have to say, its one thing to deal with alex jones on the outside. To see one of these folks that is preaching this Hoax Mentality on the School Shootings as a member of congress, just how far have we fallen here that somebody like this is made it to congress . Well, thanks, chuck. In the days after the shooting, one of these Conspiracy Theorists came to an event at the auditorium down here and asked the questions of me that were so outrageous and i exploded in anger, how dare you come to our community and suggest that the 17 lives that were taken werent. There werent murders. There wasnt a School Shooting. That was a conspiracy. A conspiracy theorist on the outside. The fact that there is now a member of congress who espouses those views, baseless Conspiracy Theories, dangerous Conspiracy Theories in addition to a history of racist rhetoric, its not acceptable. Its not acceptable on any of the house committees and not in the halls of congress. So youre hearing what i would call the technicality arguments, the process arguments about expulsion with her and it begins with she didnt do or say any of these things as a member of congress and that is the voters essentially affirmed this. It is a bad precedent to expel somebody on those grounds. What do you say in response to that argument . Its a bad pres dent and dangerous for us to ever get to the point where the house of representatives looks at itself and says its okay for one of its members to espouse dangerous Conspiracy Theories and who have, in the past, done so in addition to all of this other dangerous rhetoric. Thats a bad precedent. Chuck, i know people look and they want to talk about technicalities and looking for reasons to change the conversation. Lets start with the fundamental most important piece of this which is that Kevin Mccarthy has not yet condemned this. Kevin mccarthy, the leader of the House Republicans cannot bring himself to condemn the language and acknowledge that a woman who would come and attack the survivors of a mass shooting does not belong on the house education committee, which is where he placed her. Lets start with expecting a little bit of leadership from the republican leader because his silence leads us to only one conclusion which is hes afraid of her and hes afraid of taking on these baseless dangerous Conspiracy Theories and the people who promote them. Congressman, let me ask this question which is been bubbling up with a lot of members of the house and it was a pretty powerful story in politico thats been making the rounds. How do you work can you work with anybody on the other side right now under this current environment that the House Republicans are essentially embracing . Well, its a good question. We have had these conversations in our office with my staff. The fact is that i think that there are different issues that we have to grapple with. The challenges that we face as a country, weve got to Work Together on and when the president talked about uniting the country, he meant it. Its important. We need to give my colleagues on the other side an opportunity to Work Together to do that. That only goes do a point for people who continue to to stand by and accept the kind of rhetoric that weve been discussing here, that makes it really difficult to them to just sit down and have a normal conversation about policy matters. There has to be some set understanding of what is and what isnt permissible. And voting to overturn the outcome of the election and to not certify, that was hard to get over. But i cant even have a conversation at all if my colleague is sa afraid to stand up and say, that somebody who attacks the survivors of a School Shooting doesnt belong on the education committee. That seems to be the easiest place to start. Hey, im curious, i know that the florida delegation used to find ways to try to get together in a bipartisan way. Just even if it was, literally, for more for getting to know you on a social level than on a professional level. But there are some things that the delegation, largely, can agree on when it comes to Offshore Oil Drilling and things like that. Are you still able to have those meetings . Or are things so bad that you cant even have those type of gatherings . Well, obviously, were not having a lot of gatherings at all these days. Well, of course, covid, yeah. But there are there are issues that the florida delegation has worked well. Offshore drilling, restoration is not something thats been bipartisan. And we need to continue to have those conversations. But we also need to be perfectly frank with one another. And i we cant pretend that there wasnt an unwillingness to call out the president s lie about the massive fraud that never occurred. We cant we cant just accept the fact that there was an election that President Biden won that some of my colleagues still wont acknowledge. I confront my colleagues on that.
