Ways, calling on his republican conference to stop criticizing each other while reaching back out to mr. Trump whom himself acknowledges was partially responsible for the capitol hill attacks ending with six deaths and 140 injured Capitol Police officers that created the fissure in the first place. Now the department of Homeland Security is issuing its first domestic terrorism advisory warning through april for what it believes to be a heightened threat of domestic extremism across the country growing out of the attack on the capitol three weeks ago. Front and center in the chaos, Marjorie Taylor green, a qanon supporter, has spoken against House Speaker nancy pelosi and president obama. Shes facing threats of expulsion. What im concerned about is the Republican Leadership in the house of representatives, who is willing to overlook, ignore those statements assigning her to the Education Committee when she has mocked the killing of little children at sandy hook elementary school, when she has mocked the killing of teenagers in high school at the Marjorie Stone douglass high school. What could they be thinking . Joining me now nbc chief White House Correspondent and Weekend Today cohost kristen welker, Garrett Haake on capitol hill, and Julia Ainsley who covers Homeland Security. Kristen, President Trump is in maralago, but the political wreckage in his wake, especially for the republicans, is a major problem for the party and for the lawmakers who are still here. Reporter it really is, andrea. And they are trying to determine what the party will look like in the wake of former president donald trump. And you have as you reported at the top the House Minority leader, Kevin Mccarthy, meeting with him today in florida to essentially try to mend fences after he made those very strong comments on the house floor the day after that attack on the capitol, essentially pointing the finger at former President Trump. He tried to walk those comments back a little bit. Concerned about the sharp divisions within his own party with some members of the house voting to impeach the president. The majority did not so it doesnt seem to be a momentum for conviction in the senate, but the bottom line is there are concerns it could weaken the partys chances of winning back the house and the senate and the white house ultimatelyultimatels the goal if you were a republican. Now these revelations, this new video thats surfaced about representative Marjorie Taylor green which shows her making comments about House Speaker nancy pelosi, which also shows her taunting one of the victims of the parkland massacre, and so she is getting quite a backlash. Now, we have reached out to Leader Mccarthy for comment. He hasnt responded to us, but in a statement that was released to axios, a spokesperson for him saying he is quite disturbed by it and intends to talk to her about it. But more broadly speaking, this is going to be a real test for republicans. Do they need to separate themselves from members of their own party who espouse these Conspiracy Theories, andrea . And garrett, last night congresswoman ocasiocortez was speaking to chris hayes about her concerns that some of the republican lawmakers she serves with are dangerous, including greene. I want to play part of her response. This term there are legitimate White Supremacist Sympathizers that sit at the heart and at the core of the Republican Caucus in the house of representatives. When i hear that Representative Mccarthy is going to pull a member aside who has made White Supremacists sympathizing comments, the thing that i think is what is he going to tell them . Keep it up . Because there are no consequences in the Republican Caucus for violence. Theres no consequences for racism. No consequences for misogyny. No consequences for insurrection. Garrett, whats the answer to that . Reporter well, look, there are consequences, but sometimes they take a little bit of time. Look no further than steve king of iowa who got stripped of his committee assignments, ultimately lost reelection. So, you know, these things can happen, but as Speaker Pelosi pointed out in her Press Conference today, it will be incumbent upon the Republican Leadership to decide how seriously they want to take this. Thats the bottom line. It would take a twothirds vote of the house to expel someone like congresswoman greene. I dont see that happening. What kind of steps do republicans want to take . Its part and parcel of this broader question of what does the Republican Party want to be in the postdonald trump era . Do they want it to be the postdonald trump era at all . They have to figure out the big questions. The fight over Marjorie Taylor greene and what to do about liz cheneys leadership slot, these are all skirmishes in the bigger war over what the Republican Party will be now that donald trump is no longer its official leader. Youre absolutely right. What said aoc off in that interview, what she was pointing out is king gets stripped of committees but tyler greene was, just seated on a committee. That was her connection. And your reference, of course, is to matt gates tonight going to wyoming and trying to take on and stir up trouble for the number three republican whos enormously popular in wyoming, of course liz cheney. Julia, lets talk about that advisory from dhs. What are you learning about the details that prompted them for the First Time Ever to list domestic terrorism concerns . Its striking because without naming names, they dont name groups, but they do specifically point to ideologically motivated domestic violent extremists, people who dont have ties to foreign terrorism, the kind of things were used to hearing about from our department of Homeland Security and intelligence bulletins. This time theyre saying that people who were motivated by outrage over covid19 restrictions, who believe that the 2020 president ial race was rigged in some way, and who have other problems with president ial authority are now coming and not only are they responsible for things like the january 6th attack, but they say they are continuing to mobilize, to incite or commit violence. That is what dhs is saying. I will point out that this is a bulletin. It is not an alert. An alert would be if they had an imminent or credible or specific threat. So this is just sort of summarizing the environment now. But dhs is telling state and local Law Enforcement that they need to prepare for this, they need to be willing to do things like protect federal property that might come under attack from some of these domestic groups. That really goes back to dhs core mission when it was established after 9 11. They were supposed to work with state and local partners to talk about these threats. But its a bulletin we didnt see before the january 6th riots, andrea, and now under this dhs, were seeing that theyre starting to come into that role, and specifically when it comes to these domestic threats, they are starting to name the continuing threat and telling their partners how to prepare. We should also point out, julia, the agency, of course, doesnt have a Cabinet Secretary confirmed yet. Secretarytobe mayorkas is scheduled for a monday vote finally after there were some republican objections. Kristen welker, Garrett Haake, Julia Ainsley, thanks for starting us off. Joining us now, Chris Van Hollen who serves on the budget and appropriations committees. First i want to follow up on this threat, the fight within the Republican Party, the threat to congress and how the personal threat, the Security Threat to members of congress experienced threats to their lives with the invasion just three weeks ago seem to be fading as we approach impeachment. I should say approach the Impeachment Trial. Andrea, this unprecedented alarming bulletin from the department of Homeland Security tells you just how dangerous the situation really has become with, you know, the forces who continue to spew the big lie from donald trump that he was cheated out of an election and that theyre willing to engage in violence to overturn that election. We saw that at the capitol. Its especially outrageous that right after the department of Homeland Security issued this bulletin, you still have Senate Republicans slow walking the vote on the nomination of the next secretary for Homeland Security, mayorkas. So you would think at this moment they would begin to sort of reexamine their relationship with these farrightwing groups and work with us to pass this nomination as quickly as possible. I wanted to play something that senator mitt romney said during an Economic Club Virtual Forum yesterday. Lets listen to what he had to say about impeachment and his colleagues. And the people largely on my side who are saying look at Impeachment Trial is going to inflame passions more, i say, first of all, have you gone out publicly and said there was not widespread voter fraud and that joe biden is legitimate president of the United States . If you said that, then im happy to listen to you talk about other things that might enflame anger and divisiveness. But if you havent said that, thats really whats at the source of the anger right now. Its hard to understand how after only three weeks later, only five Senate Republicans were willing to say that he should be held accountable in a trial. Well, thats exactly right. The other 45 republican senators voted to put their heads in the sand. They voted not to hear any evidence. And they continue to be complicit, those 45, in spreading the big lie about, you know, donald trump, you know, having won the election, at least many of them. And so this is a moment, andrea, where the country will face a trial. Those republican senators will have to look at the facts and stare at them head on and render a judgment. Clearly, it was disappointing that in this most recent vote 45 of them chose to look the other way and not want to even look at the evidence before us. Its a house matter, but what do you think about a congresswoman, Marjorie Taylor greene and her support for qanon and her behavior . Well, its just outrageous. And thats really outrageous is what you were talking about a little bit earlier, that Kevin Mccarthy, the republican leader, has been so spineless in refusing to hold his members accountable. And, you know, after he made those comments on the floor, you know, criticizing donald trump for having, you know, essentially inciting the violent mob, and now hes headed down to florida on bended knee, essentially asking donald trump for forgiveness. This is a big, big problem that you have the leader of the house Republican Party refuing to confront members who are on record having openly, you know, called for violent actions including directly against the speaker of the house. I wish we saw republicans deciding to turn the page and put this really awful era of donald trump behind them, but instead they seem to be still captured by donald trump. There will be a meeting between brian deese, jeff zients, and democrats, youll be part of this later today. Are you on the side of a bipartisan bill and seeing how much you can get or go to reconciliation and get your Top Priorities through . Oh, im on the side of the American People are hurting, the country needs help desperately. We need to get it done right away. We would of course prefer to have republican support, but everything were hearing from republicans is that they dont want to be part of this solution, so i have been strongly advocating moving forward with reconciliation and a Budget Resolution as an Insurance Policy against continued republican foot dragging. Unfortunately, i think its an Insurance Policy were going to have to use sooner rather than later. But from the American Peoples perspective, having Finger Pointing in washington as to why we were not able to deliver relief is not an answer. What is an answer is delivering that relief and the sooner the better. We had a new Secretary Of State and you have a diplomatic background, your dad, i think. We had the State Department restored, i should say, by antony blinken, his first briefing, there will be daily briefings. This was his message to the press corps. I want your reaction on the other side. And you hold us accountable, ask tough questions, and that really does make us better. More broadly, and it is never more important to restate it, a free press is a cornerstone of our democracy. And this is a critical moment for protecting and defending democracy including right here at home. As someone who went through four years of infrequent briefings and no access, little to no access, theres a feeling that things are Going Forward and are going to represent the american principles, the first amendment. How important is that around the world . This is hugely important, andrea. The finally have a president and Secretary Of State who are going to stand up for american principles and values, stand up for the rule of law, for democracy, and for freedom of the press. I remember that scene years ago when Rex Tillerson was Secretary Of State and you were unceremoniously thrown out of the Press Conference and there was no Press Conference. And here we have secretary blinken not just leading through words but by example, telling the world that we do believe in freedom of the press, hard questions make us better, they make other governments better. So this is a big turning of the page, and finally, i think, well be able to rebuild our alliances around the world and have friends working with us to challenge our adversaries. Senator Chris Van Hollen, thanks very much. Good luck on that meeting on the budget this afternoon. Everyones waiting. Thank you. And President Biden, of course, is taking Executive Action today to expand obamacare, trying to provide muchneeded help to american who is lost their jobs because of the pandemic. And climate crisis. This afternoon, President Biden will begin to build back the Landmark Health care law championed by his former boss, barack obama. The action will call for a new special Enrollment Period to open up for obamacare on the healthcare. Gov website. Thats healthcare. Gov. From midfebruary through the middle of may for the unemployed while pushing federal agencies to scrap limitations to Getting Health Care and signing an order to expand access to womens reproductive care. The priority for the Biden Administration continues to be the coronavirus pandemic as millions of americans desperate for a Vaccine Wonder when will they be next in line and will they get it. Dr. Zeke emanuel is the vice provost of Global Affairs at the University Of Pennsylvania and was a member of the president s covid Advisory Board during the transition and joins me now. Thanks for being with us. Tart with the Executive Orders. How much will this reinvigorate the obamacare marketplace, which was threatened by State Lawsuits Led by texas, all these Attorney Generals going up to the Supreme Court . Donald trump did a lot to restrict enrollment in the marketplaces, cutting the Enrollment Period, reducing advertisements to make people aware they were eligible for this. Clearly President Biden is taking just the opposite tack. We have to remember that 20 million americans who are uninsured now are actually eligible either for the exchanges or for medicaid, and we could make a huge dent in the uninsured just by getting those people who are eligible on board. They need help in understanding theyre eligible. They need help in navigating because its not the simplest thing to buy Health Insurance as we all know as we try to sort through the options on our employer forms. So this will be a big push and should net millions of people getting additional insurance. Of course going online, thats mirroring the problems that people are having trying to get an appointment for the vaccine. As a member of the covid Advisory Board during the transition, did you know how serious the problem you were inheriting, the biden team is inheriting would be . Well, we knew that it was a serious problem of, you know, distribution, coordination. You have to coordinate the manufacturers with the people who are taking it from the manufacturers to the front lines. You have to coordinate with the states. We knew that was a big problem and lots of inadequacies were happening. How big of a problem it was not clear. I think were all reassured and breathing a sigh of relief, one of the great hopes that jeff zients and the large team hes assembled on how to put all of this together are taking over. That doesnt mean it will all get better in a heartbeat, but it does mean that progressive i. Youve already seen that with signing an additional contract for additional 200 million doses with moderna and pfizer. And so those are important landmarks that we can see progress is being made. Now, you may not have been able to check this, but the cdc has confirmed news from South Carolina from the Health Department there of two cases of the South Africa Covid Variant now appearing in that state. I recognize that there could be a lot more because we have not been surveilling adequately the Genome Sequencing of people who have been confirmed with the virus, but is this just the tip of the iceberg . This is worrisome because these two individuals have no evidence of travel, and so it does mean that the variant from south africa, which is more worrisome than even the british variant, is about and in the community. As you point out, how widespread it is we dont know because our genetic surveillance infrastructure is not up to snuff. We really should be genetically sequencing 50,000 or so viruses every week. Were nowhere near that. We need the cdc to coordinate with private industry to begin ramping up that surveillance so we know how bad it is. The good news here is that when the pfizer and moderna vaccines were tested against this variant, they did appear slightly less effective than what we call the original one in the United States, but theyre still pretty effective. So the mandate to get as many people vaccinated as soon as possible is still the numberone concern and, you know, trying to even exceed what the big marker President Biden has put out there, 100 Million People in 100 days. If we can xeeld that, we will be very well positioned. And European Union is threatening a trumpstyle eufirst limit ban on exports of vaccines that are manufactured in europe and that includes pfizer and brussels is targeted because of the shortages in europe. How big a problem would that be for what we are expecting from our own contracts . I dont think that will be a big problem from what were expecting from our own contracts because we have Production Capacity here in the United States. Weve also got i think the positive news, weve got merck, this has abandoned most of its Vaccine Initiatives saying they are in negotiations to manufacture the vaccines of others. Synofi in france has begun to work on manufacturing the virus of other the vaccine of other manufacturers. So i think theres a big push to get more manufacturing capacity online. And hopefully this threat of Vaccine Nationalism will not take over. The whole world, as the South African variant makes clear, needs to be vaccinated if were all going to be protected. Otherwise we could get these variants that could wreak havoc in the whole world, even when people are vaccine a it inned. Dr. Zeke emanuel, as always, thank you so much. Thank you, andrea. Coming up, republican freshman Marjorie Taylor greene facing calls for expulsion after video shows her harassing a Parkland School shooting survivor. A grieving father joins me ahead. It is my vision so my plan includes preservision. Theres a resolution to remove Marjorie Taylor greene, a qanon member in congress. She repeatedly liked comments that called for violence against prominent democrats like speaker nancy pelosi, former president obama. In one video that greene posted in 2019, she falsely accused pelosi of treason and said its a crime punishable by death is what treason is. Nancy pelosi is guilty of treason. Greene also liked a comment on a 2018 post that said, quote, a bullet to the head would be quicker than removing Speaker Pelosi from office. Nbc news has not reviewed her sincedeleted social media posts and greene did not respond to nbcs request but called the cnn story a hit piece on me. She said focused on my time before running for political office. Now a video surfaced online wednesday of greene e harassing a gun control activist. Greene chases hub on capitol hill as he walks around the capitol, greene calling him a coward because he does not engage with her and complaining he met with senators when she was not able to. Im a gun owner. I have a concealed carry permit. I carry a gun for protection for myself. And you are using your lobby and the money behind it and the kids to try to take away my Second Amendment rights. You dont have anything to say for yourself . Greene has repeatedly promoted false Conspiracy Theories including baseless qanon ideas. Greenes extremism represents a growing rift in the Republican Party. While she faces a backlash in washington, she won her district in georgia by nearly 50 points in november. And thats where nbc news correspondent Blayne Alexander joins me now. What are voters telling you . Reporter well, andrea, it really is a mixed bag among the people we spoke to. But i want to underscore something you said, she won this district by nearly 50 points. That was just a few months ago so clearly there were a number of voters to voted to send her to congress not too long ago and people we spoke to say that support is no wavering. This is not a grand departure from many of the things that she had said in the past. The voters here are familiar with her and in some cases, one woman i spoke to, she said thats what she likes about her, the fact she would speak whats on her mind, whatever it is thats on her mind. On the flip side, that also happens to be case with those who did not support her from the beginning. They say this only essentially underscores their point of why they say she does not represent their values and have concerns with her in congress. Take a look. I think shes a lunatic, like, legitimately, i think shes insane. Shes bold. She speaks the truth. You know, and she stands behind what she says. And a lot of politicians dont do that anymore. Reporter does it bother you that your congresswoman apparently promoted or supported or made posts to that effect . Everybody does that to some extent, whether they want to admit or not. Theres not a person in the world what has not said, i wish that person we are dead. Chasing down a survivor of a shooting, i dont think Congress People should act that way. We dont need that kind of attention. Were a good region. Reporter so, andrea, like i said, a mixed bag among people we spoke to. Two things that struck me and stood out to me, one, people are strong one way or the other. Either they are very much in support, in favor of her so they want her to keep going as one voter said or, you know, we believe in her, we think shes a fighter is what one voter said as well. Theyre either on that side or on the opposite side, as one person called her a lunatic. Youre seeing Strong Language on that side as well. Not a lot of people in the middle who are kind of indifferent either way. The other thing that stood out to me is that on both sides, either for or against her, they did not seem to be very fazed by the facebook posts at all. Two people i spoke with today kind of made excuses. One said youll find Question Posts on anybodys facebook page. But hes not bothered by the posts, andrea. Blayne alexander, thanks very much. Now of course the parents of the victims of the parkland shooting, they want Marjorie Taylor greene out of congress. Leading that charge gun safety activist Fred Guttenberg who lost his daughter jamie in the parkland shooting. Hes written a book called find the helpers. Fred, good to see you again. Your reaction to Marjorie Taylor greene and the role shes playing in congress. Well, she doesnt belong there. She is a depraved person who ran for congress on a lie. And i heard the prior reporting. I think the reason she won her district by so much is she actually was unopposed, so there were actually people who voted for anybody but her. But shes depraved, and she has called parkland a lie, sandy hook a lie, las vegas a lie, and 9 11 a lie. When you watch the video of her chasing dave and the other kids down, not only is she harassing them and keep in mind, andrea, this woman is probably somewhere close to 50 years of age and shes chasing children. And not only is she harassing them, shes telling them outright, i have a gun. Shes telling them that. And we now know shes made comments about people taking bullets in the head. My feeling about her is this Kevin Mccarthy, when youre done having drinks and cake with the bully in palm beach, you need to come back and you need to remove her. She has no place in congress. She won. She ran a race on a lie. Shes there. Its now your job to get her out. Fred, of course to david and the other kids, what are some of the survivors of the massacre, some of your of jamies classmates telling you about this impact of all this on them . Andrea, its going to be three years in just 2 1 2 weeks. I know. This is you know, for so much of this country, maybe people move on. For those of us, the kids, the parents, my family, its like it happened yesterday. Its like it happened a minute ago. So that to litigate this now and relive this now because a person who actually currently is on the Education Committee in congress, is the one who made these comments and ill say this. Again, i listened to the news clip. People were saying oh, you know, those are old, everybody says things they wish they could take back. She hasnt taken it back. She hasnt said i was wrong. She hasnt said im sorry. She hasnt said i dont believe this. She is letting the lie live. She is okay with it. And unfortunately, those who are in leadership in that party are saying theyre okay with it also because theyre not doing anything. Should the speaker and other republicans who may agree with her on this, should they take action and try to work around Kevin Mccarthy . I think they have to. You know, listen, its one thing to be a Conspiracy Theorist in a District Making a lot of noise on social media. Its another thing to be in congress where you dont only represent your district now, you represent the country. You run an Education Committee making decisions for all of our kids across this nation. You are coming to congress with a loaded weapon while saying you think people who are there should be shot. Somebody has to take action on this today. We need to take her at her word. She hasnt said she doesnt disown any of it. Fred guttenberg, our thoughts are with you in memory of jamie and all the other children and all the other parents who live this every single day. Thank you. You know what, thank you and thank you to everyone across this country who has truly been amazing. Were going to get this done. And were going to get her out of there. Fred guttenberg. Stay in touch, fred. Thank you, andrea. President biden is tackling thank you. President biden is tackling of course an enormous threat, the crisis of climate change. Hes take it head on, taking Executive Actions on multiple fronts on wednesday and making job creation the central pillar of his climate agenda. Today is climate day at the white house, and which means that today is jobs day at the white house. Weve already waited too long to deal with this climate crisis. We cant wait any longer. Joining me now is john kerry, special president ial envoy for climate change. The former Secretary Of State, of course, former senator and president ial nominee. Mr. Secretary, thanks for being with us. Happy to be with you. Thank you, andrea. I want to ask you about the Public Acceptance or the pushback against this very big climate agenda. The public has been ahead of the politicians in pushing for bold action. Now youve got the business community, youve got wall street, General Motors urging action, electric cars. You, of course, have been focused on this for years i know from listening to you and going to, you know, private forums youve held. Is the focus on jobs possibly going to make a difference when it comes to legislating . Well, i hope it will. Its just one of the realities, andrea. Its not made up in order to make the argument. Its happening all around the world. Before covid, the Fastest Growing job in the United States of america was solar panel technician, and the second Fastest Growing job was wind turbine technician. You have 55 now, new jobs in texas, in texas, that are all associated with wind. And you have Major Companies in texas that used to be principally or exclusively focused on fossil fuel, all of which are now diversifying very rapidly, moving into alternative renewable energy, looking at the possibilities of hydrogen and other things. This is a Natural Evolution in many ways, as technology advances, as new products, new things come online. Jobs change. Its a reality. There is much that President Biden is talking about doing which will accelerate the creation of new jobs, particularly in areas where theyve been hard hit because of the market transition. Its not washington that has changed the number of coal plants we have in america. Its the fact that the market is no longer you cant finance a new coal plant. No big bank is going to finance a new coal plant. So the reality is the market has shifted. These decisions are being made in boardrooms, and theyre being made by good ceos who are looking at how they can make savings in their energy expenditures, how they can be a modern company that is going to be responsible. Lots of boardrooms and lots of decisionmakers in america are now making decisions based on whats called esg, environment, social, and government, all of the impacts that come together really asking them to look to a different set of criteria by which they will begin to make these judgments. And you see a lot of Risk Analysis being made about fiduciary responsibility so that people are evaluating, well, if we invest in this, what is the impact going to be 20 years from now, 15 years from now . Will we be at the right place in terms of our social, environmental, and government responsibilities . Well, let me ask you about some of these big goals. A half million new electric Charging Stations the federal government will help create, a million new auto manufacturing jobs, 1. 5 million energyefficient homes, zero emissions in 30 years, yet youve got people like senator cornyn saying you have 280 million, you know, combustible engine cars on the roads right now. How do you change all that . Well, its not going to change overnight. Everybody understands that. But it is already changing very, very fast. What is the highest valued company in The World Today . Its tesla. One thing they make electric vehicles. So people are making the decision already that they want a vehicle in fact, i heard the other day, i think it was a ceo of Ford Motor Company was saying to people that the electric car is a better car. It is quieter, smoother, it is less parts involved, less maintenance, therefore, and obviously it doesnt have the problem of spewing out a lot of fumes that contribute to the Global Warming thats taking place. So i think if you talk to people at the car industry, thats where theyre going. You know, bmw, mercedes, volkswagen, ford, chevy, lincoln, you name it. Theyre all looking to a transition period where they are going to be moving to electric. I mean, in the f1 formula one cars, off whole segment devoted to electric formula one cars. Thats always been the vanguard of Automobile Advance and change. Were seeing it already. You know, i had the pleasure of driving down to the inauguration in an electric car, the tesla, back down to washington and back to the united to massachusetts. And it was great. I loved it. I recommend it to everybody. Over time i think there will be more and more choices for people. As that happens, costs will come down. But these Charging Stations are going to be a very vital component of proving to americans, hey, you can recharge and you can recharge pretty quickly, its increasingly getting faster, and its going to become more convenient as a result of these Charging Stations. So this is an example of Building Infrastructure for the future. You know, build it and they will come. Well, build the Charging Stations and the cars will be there to be charged. Thats whats going to happen in this transition. Let me play something that Mitch Mcconnell had to say yesterday. Mr. Kerry admitted yesterday that even if the United States somehow brought our Carbon Emissions to zero, it wouldnt make much difference. This piecemeal Green New Deal is the wrong prescription. And that was Mitch Mcconnell just this morning, im sorry. If you can respond. Well, first of all, i didnt say it wouldnt make any difference. I said it wont make the difference that will save us from the problem, because all of the world has to be at the table. The only point i was making, we need to reduce our emissions. We are the second largest emitter in the world. If you put china and the United States together, thats almost 50 of all the emissions in the world. So, yes, we have to do it. The point i was making is this is a Global Endeavor that all countries need to join in. And when we went to paris in 2013 and then in 2015 when we negotiated it, we cooperated and china cooperated with us. We were two leading entities that went to the world and said were doing this. And guess what happened . The rest of the world came on board. And we had 196 countries joined together in paris saying we all have to be part of this effort. Im not sure why these folks are resisting, honestly. Its really interesting to me. It seems to strike me that its almost part of this notion that if you just Say Something enough, even if its not true, somehow its a reality, like someone won an election when they didnt win an election. And that lie has cost our country dearly. If we are how do we get our credibility back, mr. Secretary, with china and russia and the rest of the world, because they would say well wait them out . We cant trust america anymore. How do you get china and russia, given all the other problem we have with them, as you know, to take us seriously and reingauge . Thats exactly what President Biden did on the day of inauguration when he immediately signed up to the paris agreement. He didnt waste any time. Were back in the paris agreement. Thats a restoration of credibility. Yesterday was an enormous restoration of credibility. People have seen that the president has ordered the reversal of those Executive Orders that were very destructive to the implementation of paris of good common sense about the environment. Thats a restoration of credibility. And now the president has put together this team that is going to work domestically and internationally to help put the United States back where it ought to be, which is living up to an agreement and also leading the world to help to deal with this challenge and meet the crisis. Around were not doing andrea, were not doing this because, you know, we think its fun or because we simply want to do it. Were doing it because the best scientists in the world have all unanimously said to us, with increasing amounts of evidence, that we only have so much time left, a small window within which to make decisions that will avoid the worst consequences of the climate crisis. Now, if Senator Mcconnell believes that its better to be spending 265 billion to clean up after three storms, which is what we did two years ago, we had to clean up after maria, harvey and irma. 265 billion. Last year we spent 55 billion on one storm. Everyone knows the intensity of these storms, the Damage Levels of these storms, the loss of farms and crops, the changes in the growth of our food products. I mean, could wantless things are happening which, you know, folks around the nation are observing and living. And yet we have people who just want to continue to proceed as if nothings going on. We cant do that. You cant have an Ostrich Policy where you put your head in the sand and pretend that nothing is going on around you matters. We have to address this. God gave us the ability to be rational and logical and as President Kennedy said here on earth gods work is our own. We have to do this. And we have to undertake to listen to the scientists, respond. And the exciting thing is that in that response are the greatest Economic Opportunities weve ever seen. The United States of america is a technology leader. We need to be the ones creating the technologies that will do this, not in a way that is painful or somehow in any way negatively affects our standard of living or our Quality Of Life. We have to do this in a way that people realize all of a sudden, wow, im going to have im going to be healthier, the air will be cleaner. Im going to have a beautiful electric car that doesnt make noise, that doesnt spew out pollution. And it works just as well if not more comfortably than any other car. I can have a better Quality Of Life because my nation will be more secure because were producing all of our own energy and we dont have to have, you know, the burning of a fuel which clearly contributes to a scientifically arrived at conclusion about the warming of the planet and the dangers to this planet. This is so logical. I dont understand the opposition. I dont think theres any gain in it politically because massively the polling shows that americans understand this is a crisis and we need to address it. Well, President Biden said it was a big ask to ask you to take it on. You are clearly a man with a mission, mr. Secretary, thank you very much for being with us today.
