Circumvented. Points for the baby bonnet. I think we can do that all day, if you like. Absolutely. The point you made off the Fashion Point for a second, mike pence is a curious figure. He also kind of is the Human Embodiment of the tragedy of really white evangelicalism. You had evangelicals make a compromise of whatever they said they believed in, whether fidelity in marriage, reverence toward women, whether its whatever it is they were putting forth. The evangelical church, the church tells you to love the poor and immigrant. They didnt do that. They traded it all for judges and whatever else they thought they were getting. See if we have audio from capitol hill perfect the where the pences were just introduced. We have temporarily lost our ability to communicate with joy reed. We should mention, joy didnt get the hook. We lost connection. We have technical difficulties. I think whats about to happen is i think were about to see Vice President elect harris arrive, which is why theres been a ripple on the ladies and gentlemen, the honorable michael r. Pence and mrs. Karen pence. [ applause ] we will have the still sitting Vice President. Playing the standin role for the president. President trump is not here, who gave a speech and went to florida, refusing to take part in this transfer of power. To your point, its not clear that he wasnt actually functioning as the Commander In Chief two wednesdays ago when the calls for National Guard were refused or not taken by the actual president , reporting suggests it was mike pence who intervened. There was reporting in the Washington Post and New York Times that west wing aides said they would not follow trumps orders. I think theres an open question for historians and reporters at this point to answer for us about who was the actual Commander In Chief in the final days. Its an excellent point and worrying one. Right. Not because whatever you feel about the relative competence of mike pence and donald trump thats a Fun Party Game the presidency is supposed to be has the power for a reason. If those powers are being carried out by someone else without the country being notified and without procedures, its not good precedent. The same way it wasnt good when al hague tried to call himself president in a previous administration, if mike pence became de facto Commander In Chief without any transfer of the powers. Its not good in terms of democracy accountability and how things could go haywire in the future. Its something we can leave as a mystery. Its the echo and the repeated story of this presidency. We may have dodged a bullet again because heaven forbid something had happened, its not at all clear who was in charge. We are weighing for members of the inaugural committee. They will be the next to be announced, the next to enter under the stairs. Then will come the Vice President elect and then the President Elect. Just to keep an eye on the clock, 11 05. At noon straight up, no matter the status of the swearing in, just to give everyone a heads up, joe biden is due to be sworn many several minutes before the noon hour. The noon hour is when control of the government shifts. Donald trump is in florida. With him is a Military Aide with the nuclear codes, the socalled football. Every president has a card with the launch codes should they have to do the worst part of the job, should they have to unleash the unthinkable. At noon, Donald Trumps launch codes become unusable. Control is shifted to the Military Aide who is with joe biden for all day today and the duration of his term. Interesting to see mike pence in the foreground and former president bush. Its hard to tell who is talking to who. Its hard to tell from this distance. This is obviously the first inauguration, first Huge National event like this that we have had during the pandemic, and every one of the guys its almost always guys whose mask is slipping down under their nose. We have seen a couple people who dont have their mask on correctly. I want to dive into the Television Screen and fix their masks for them. Every time i see somebody in two masks, i feel better. Every time i see a shifted mask, my heart skips a beat. Bundle up, people. Masks work, but they have to cover your facial orifices to do so. We have the same i think my earpiecewor works again. Wasnt to go up to people in the supermarket and say, that isnt working. You are breathing in covid. Exactly. You do see some people wearing two masks here today. Thats an interesting phenomenon. Single layer does work. Expers tell us that. For safety sake, you see some in two. That makes me feel better given the number of important people on that stage right now. Thats a rod of all people. His wife j lo is singing. So theres a rod. Can we remark about the fact that the Entertainment Industry boycott of donald trump wound up being one of the things one of the few things that he took to heart about his presidency and as a signal it wasnt going well. Right . What he really wanted as the end of the day was the love and adoration of celebrities, of stars. What he got instead before i went my mike went was he got the adoration of an evangelical group but who despised that hollywood world. They think it undermined core Christian Values in america. Its ironic that donald trump really came from the world of fame at the level he had on the apprentice. Thats where he wanted to stay. He lost that. His brand is so different than the one he came in with. Rachel, you made that point on your show the other day. If he had known what he was going to lose in terms of what he really wants, i dont know if he would have run. Theres Vice President elect and her husband second gentleman daughter. You saw officer goodman in the Camel Hair Coat, blue scarf. He is out ahead of them. The official escort to the Vice President elect. The man who saved the senate. He has been promoted to Acting Deputy House Sergeant At Arms after his heroism on the day of the trump mob attack on the capitol. Transportation secretary pete with his husband. They will move culture. They are great. United States Capitol Police officer eugene o. Goodman. Hear the round of applause for officer goodman. I said he was going to be Acting Deputy House Sergeant At Arms. Im incorrect. Its acting Deputy Senate sergeant at arms after his heroism on the attack on the capitol. Several members of congress have said he should get a congressional medal of honor. He should. He absolutely should. Thats the real Black Panther in real life. The congressional gold the president ial Medal Of Freedom to restore the honor that was medal after what the current for another 45 minutes did to it. Give him all of them. Ladies and gentlemen, the Vice President elect and mr. Douglas emhoff. [ applause ] as this is such an important moment, i have to tell you, for a lot of black girls out there in The World Today are smiling maybe for first time in four years seeing this Howard University graduate, member of a black sorority, somebody that seems so familiar in a lot of the same ways that Michelle Obama did, taking this place in history. This is pretty amazing. This is my first goose bumps moment, other than the coat that Michelle Obama had on. This is amazing. This is absolutely amazing. Incoming and outgoing Vice President s there having a moment. Washington is just about to be full of new faces. I think that, as much as the politics, have become so dark and depressing. Washington is hungry for new figures to be spotted out at up and coming restaurants and new spouses to be spotted jogging on the mall and new and exciting people to see on the sunday shows. Pete is one of the most effective communicators in our politics at this hour. If anyone is too afraid to turn the channel to fox news, try doing it with pete on. Its something. Joe biden talks about unity. Pete does it. Joe biden does, too. But there are because of the bizarre nature of this transition, there havent been the sort of long looks and big profiles and interviews and bios on the incoming cabinet. Some really interesting and different people in terms of tone and life experience. You are not seeing this inauguration take place with the Democratic Party divided or with a faction of the Democratic Party having become ascended and some defeated. Im thinking about the nominees who are people who Bernie Sanders or Elizabeth Warren might have nominated for the same position had they won the president ial primary rather than joe biden. You dont see Division Within the democratic primary among ideological factions or personality driven factions right now. Thats a luxury. That may change over the course of the biden administration. Biden and harris there today, neither of them is a divisive figure within their party. There isnt a healing to be done on the democratic side in the way there was needed to be on the republican side and never happened in 2017. A good point. Even when the democrats debate policy, it will not be of the same nature as what happened on the right. There will be constructive disagreement and fights around the edges. But theyre starting on the same team. Kevin mccarthy of california who has seen a colossal drop in his stature and standing after his role, even after the insurrection. We are now able to see President Elect and doctor biden. We are running four and a half minutes behind. They have a way of making that up. Joy . You know i want to say it. Its a beautiful periwinkle blue. Its a gorgeous coat. The coats of the first latd did is ladies have become a thing. This one is its beautiful. The fact its a young designer and upcoming designer that shes giving this tremendous opportunity. The designer who created Michelle Obamas first dance look, her beautiful gown, really rose to incredible prominence. Its tasteful, its appropriate. But its got a little glam at the top. I see a little shimmer. I love it. The gloves are fabulous. The mask matches. Jill biden is looking fantastic. Joe doesnt look so bad either. What a great love story between jill biden and joe biden. The way that she helped his family recover from tragedy to bring joe back from what he lost. Its a wonderful story. We havent had a love story in the white house in four years. We now have the news that the trumps slept in different bedrooms. Its a different marriage. This is a love match like the obamas were. I think that will be healing for the country, too. They couldnt have hired spielberg to inject a hint of snowflakes to make this more cinematic. Nature has supplied that. We should mention the reason as these Security Dignitaries are being announced, the reason everybody is acting is because the house and Senate Sergeant at arms have their resignations demanded as did the chief of the u. S. Capitol police after the attack on the capitol and the illdefended capitol two weeks ago. Are operating in an acting capacity right now. Another sobering reminder what we have been through. The New York Times is reporting that former President Obama said to Vice President elect harris, im so proud of you. A shot of what they were able to hear. I dont know if our audio picked that up. Some reports ladies and gentlemen, the President Elect of the United States, Joseph Robinette biden, junior and dr. Jill biden. [ applause ] letting them have their moment. Just wanted to let you know, it appears President Elect biden will be sworn in using a bible in his family since 1893. It was used during his swearing if as Vice President in 2009 and in 2013. It has been used every time he is sworn in as u. S. Senator. Five inches thick with a celtic cross on the cover. His late son used it for his own swearing in as Attorney General in delaware. Please welcome the honorable amy klobuchar. [ applause ] Vice President pence, mr. President elect, madam Vice President elect, members of congress and the judicial branch, former president s and first ladies, Vice President s, leaders from abroad and a whole bunch of bidens, america, welcome to the 59th president ial inauguration, where in just a few moments joe biden and Kamala Harris will take their solemn oaths. [ applause ] this ceremony is a culmination of 244 years of a democracy. It is a moment when leaders brought to this stage by the will of the people promise to be faithful to our constitution, to cherish and defend it. It is a moment when they become as we all should be, guardians of our country. Have we become too jaded, too accustom to the ritual of the passing of the torch of democracy to truly appreciate what a blessing and a privilege it is to witness this moment . I think not. Two weeks ago, when an angry, violent mob staged an insurrection and desecrated this temple of our democracy, it awakened us to our responsibilities as americans. This is the day when our democracy picks itself up, brushes off the dust and does what america always does, goes forward as a nation under god, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. [ applause ] this conveyance of a sacred trust between our leaders and our people takes place in front of the shining capitol dome for a reason. When Abraham Lincoln gave his first Inaugural Address in front of this capitol, the dome was only partially constructed, braced by ropes of steel. He promised he would finish it. He was criticized for Spending Funds on it during the civil war. To those critics he replied, if the people see the capitol going on, it is a sign we intend the union shall go on. And it did and it will. [ applause ] generations of americans gave their lives to preserve our republican in this place. Great legislation to protect civil righs and Economic Security was crafted under this dome. It falls on all of us, not just the two leaders we are inaugurating today, to take up the torch of our democracy, not as a weapon of political arson but as an instrument for good. We pledge today never to take our democracy for granted, as we celebrate its remarkable strength. We celebrate its resilience, its grit. We celebrate the ordinary people doing extraordinary things for our nation. The doctors and nurses on the front line of this pandemic. The officers in the capitol. A new generation never giving up hope for justice. We celebrate a new president , joe biden, who vows to restore the Soul Of America and cross the river of our divides to a higher plain. Our first woman Vice President. [ applause ] Kamala Harris who stands on the shoulders of so many who have forged the way to this day. Little girls and boys across the world will know anything and everything is possible. In the end, that is america. Our democracy. A country of so much good. Today, on these Capitol Steps and before this glorious field of flags, we rededicate ourselves to its cause. Thank you. [ applause ] it is now my honor to introduce to you the senator who has worked with me and so many others to make this ceremony possible. My friend and the chair of the inaugural committee, missouri senator roy blunt. [ applause ] i should have known when Senator Klobuchar involved there would be a touch of snow up here this morning. Of all the things we considered, i dont think snow was on my agenda until i walked out the door a moment ago. Thank you, Senator Klobuchar. Thanks to the other members of the joint Congressional Committee on the inauguration as we begin the 59th inaugural ceremony. I want to thank our Security Partners for the way they dealt with unprecedented circumstances. When i chaired the inauguration four years ago, i shared president reagans 1981 description of this event as commonplace and miraculous. Commonplace because we had done it every four years since 1789. Miraculous because we had done it every four years since 1789. Americans have celebrated this moment during war, during depression and now during pandemic. Once again, all three branchs of our government come together as the constitution envisions. Once again, we renew our commitment to our determined democracy, forging a more perfect union. That theme for this inauguration, our determined democracy, forging a more perfect union, was announced by the joint committee before the election with the belief that the United States can only fulfill its promise and set an example for others if we are always working to be better than we have been. The constitution established that determined democracy with its first three words, declaring the people as the source of the government. The articles of confederation hadnt done that. The magna carta hadnt done that. Only the constitution says the government exists because the people are the source of the reason it exists. They immediately followed those first three words with the words to form a more union. The founders did not say to form a perfect union. They did not claim that in our new country nothing would need to be improved. Fortunately, they understood that always working to be better would be the hallmark of a great democracy. The freedoms we have today, the nation we have today is not here just because it happened. They arent complete. A great democracy working through the successes and failures of our history, striving to be better than it had been. We are more than we have been and we are less than we hope to be. The assault on our capitol at this very place just two weeks ago reminds us that a government designed to balance and check itself is both fragile and resilient. During the last year, the pandemic challenged our free and open society and called for extraordinary determination and sacrifice and still challenges us today. Meeting that challenge head on have been and are health care workers, scientists, first responders, essential Front Line Workers and so many others we depend on in so many ways. Today we come to this moment, people all over the world as we are here are watching and will watch what we do here. Our government comes together, the congress and courts join the transition of executive responsibility. One Political Party more pleased today and on every inaugural day than the other. But this is not a moment of division. Its a moment of unification. A new administration begins and brings with it a new beginning. With that, our Great National debate goes forward and a determined democracy will continue to be essential in pursuit of a more union and a Better Future for all americans. What a privilege for me to join you today. Thank you. [ applause ] im pleased to call the podium a longtime friend of the president , father leo odonovan to lead us in an invocation. Stand if you are able and remain standing for the National Anthem and the pledge to our flag. Gracious and merciful god, at this sacred time we come before you in need. Indeed, on our knees. But we come still more with hope and with our eyes raised anew to the vision of a more union in our land. A union of all our citizens to promote The General Welfare and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity. We are a people of many races, creeds and colors, national backgrounds, cultures and styles. Now far more numerous and our land vaster than when john carroll wrote his prayer for the inauguration of George Washington 232 years ago. He prayed that you, creator of all, would assist with your holy spirit of counsel and fortitude the president of these United States, that his Administration May be conducted in righteousness and be eminently useful to your people. Today we confess our past failures to live according to our vision of equality, inclusion and freedom for all. Yet we resolutely commit still more now to renewing the vision, to caring for one another in word and deed, especially the least fortunate among us. And so becoming a light for the world. There is a power in each and every one of us that lives by turning to every other one of us. A thrust of the spirit to cherish and care and stand by others and above all those most in need. It is called love. Its path is to give every more of itself. Today it is called american patriotism. Born not of power and privilege but of care for the common good. With malice toward none and with charity for all. For our new president , we beg of you the wisdom, solemn and thought when he knelt before you and prayed for an understanding heart so that i can govern your people and know the difference between right and wrong. We trust in the counsel of the letter of james. If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask god who gives you generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. Pope francis has reminded us how important it is to dream together. By ourselves, he wrote, we risk seeing mirages, things that are not there. Dreams, on the other hand, are built together. Be with us, holy mystery of love, as we dream together. Help us under our new president to reconcile the people of our land, restore our dream and invest it with peace and justice and the joy that is the overflow of love. To the glory of your name forever. Amen. Ladies and gentlemen, please remain standing for the presentation of our National Colors by the Armed Forces Color Guard. The singing of our National Anthem and for the pledge of allegiance. Ladies and gentlemen, here for the singing o anthem, please welcome lady gaga. [ applause ] o say, can you see by the dawns early light what so proudly we hailed at the twilights last gleaming . Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight oer the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming . And the rockets red glare the bombs bursting in air gave proof through the night that our flag was still there oh, say, does that starspangled banner yet wave oer the land of the free and the Home Of The Brave . [ applause ] [ applause ] ladies and gentlemen, please welcome from the city of south fulton fire department, president of the International Association of Firefighters Local 3920, captain andrea m. Hall for the reciting of the pledge of allegiance. I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of america and to the republic for which it stands One Nation Under God indivisible with liberty and justice for all. [ applause ] what you are all about to be part of, america, is a historic moment of firsts. To administer the oath to our first africanamerican, our first asianamerican and our first woman Vice President , can a Kamala Harris, it is my privilege to welcome to the inaugural stage the first laina to serve on the Supreme Court, Justice Sonia sew sew toe sotoo. That i will support and defend the constitution of the United States. Against all enemies attorney and domestic. Against all enemies foreign and domestic. With that, it is now my honor to introduce the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, john roberts, to administer the president ial oath to the next president of the United States, joseph r. Biden. [ applause ] ladies and gentlemen, please stand for the Oath Of Office followed by musical honors. Please raise your right hand, and repeat after me. Junior, do solemnly swear. The constitution of the United States. So help you god. So help me god. Congratulations, mr. President. [ applause ] [ applause ] ladies and gentlemen, please be seated. A pause in the Program Prior to the Inaugural Address. The presidency of joe biden officially begins in nine minutes. My fellow americans, a moment we have all been waiting for. It is now my great privilege and high honor to be the first person to officially introduce the 46th president of the United States, joseph r. Biden jr. Chief justice roberts, Vice President harris, speaker pelosi, leader schumer, mitch mcconnell, Vice President pence, my distinguished guests, My Fellow Americans, this is americas day. This is democracys day. A day of history and hope, of renewal and resolve, a crucible for the ages. America has been tested anew and americans have risen to the challenge. Today we celebrate the triumph not of a candidate but of a cause, the cause of democracy. The people, the will of the people, has been heard, and the will of the people has been heeded. Weve learned again that democracy is precious, democracy is fragile. And at this hour, my friends, democracy has prevailed. For now on this Hallowed Ground where just a few days ago violence sought to shake the capitols very foundation, we come together as One Nation Under God, indivisible, to carry out the peaceful transfer of power as we have for more than two centuries. As we look ahead in our uniquely american way, restless, bold, optimistic, and set our sights on a nation we know we can be and we must be. I thank my predecessors of both parties for their presence here today. I thank them from the bottom of my heart. And i know and i know the resilience of our constitution and the strength of our nation, as does president carter, who i spoke with last night, who cannot be with us today, but whom we salute for his lifetime of service. Ive just taken a sacred oath each of those patriots have taken, the oath first sworn by George Washington. But The American Story depends not on any one of us, not on some of us, but on all of us, on we, the people, who seek a more perfect union. This is a great nation. We are good people. And over the centuries through storm and strife, in peace and in war, weve come so far. But we still have far to go. Well press forward with speed and urgency, for we have much to do in this winter of peril and significant possibilities, much to repair, much to restore, much to heal, much to build, and much to gain. Few people in our nations history have been more challenged or found a time more challenging or difficult than the time were in now. Once in a century virus that silently stalks the country. Its taken as many lives in one year as america lost in all of world war ii. Millions of jobs have been lost. Hundreds of thousands of businesses closed. A cry for Racial Justice, some 400 years in the making, moves us. The dream of justice for all will be deferred no longer. A cry for survival has planted itself, a cry that cant be any more desperate or any more clear now, a rise of political extremism, White Supremacy, domestic terrorism that we must confront and we will defeat. To overcome these challenges, to restore the soul and future of america requires so much more than words. It requires the most elusive of all things in a democracy unity. Unity. In another january on new years day in 1863, Abraham Lincoln signed the emancipation proclamation. When he put pen to paper, the president said, and i quote, if my name ever goes down in history, it will be for this act and my whole soul is in it. My whole soul is it. Today on this january day, my whole soul is in this bringing america together, uniting our people, uniting our nation. And i ask every american to join me in this cause. Uniting to fight the foes we face anger, resentment and hatred, extremism, lawlessness, violence, disease, joblessness, and hopelessness. With unity, we can do great things, important things. We can right wrongs. We can put people to work in good jobs. We can teach our children in safe schools. We can overcome the deadly virus. We can reward work and rebuild the middle class and make health care secure for all. We can deliver Racial Justice and we can make america once again a leading force for good in the world. I know speaking of unity it can sound to some like a foolish fantasy these days. I know the forces that divide us are deep and they are real. But i also know they are not new. Our history has been a constant struggle between the american ideal that were all created equal and the harsh, ugly reality that racism, nativism, fear, demonization have long torn us apart. The battle is perennial, and victory is never assured. Through civil war, the Great Depression, world war, 9 11, through struggle, sacrifice, and setbacks, our better angels have always prevailed. In each of these moments, enough of us, enough of us have come together to carry all of us forward. And we can do that now. History, faith, and reason show the way, the way of unity. We can see each other not as adversaries but as neighbors. We can treat each other with dignity and respect. We can join forces, stop the shouting and lower the temperature, for without unity, there is no peace, only bitterness and fury. No progress, only exhausting outrage. No nation, only a state of chaos. This is our historic moment of crisis and challenge. And unity is the path forward. And we must meet this moment as the United States of america. If we do that, i guarantee you we will not fail. We have never, ever, ever failed in america when weve acted together. So today, at this time in this place, lets start afresh, all of us. Lets listen to one another again, hear one another, see one another, show respect to one another. Politics doesnt have to be a raging fire destroying everything in its path. Every disagreement doesnt have to be a cause for total war. And we must reject the culture in which facts themselves are manipulated and even manufactured. My fellow americans, america has to be better than this. And i believe america is so much better than this. Just look around. Here we stand in the shadow of the capitol dome, as but was mentioned earlier, completed in the civil war, when union itself was literally hanging in the balance. Yet we endured. We prevailed. Here we stand, looking out on the great mall where dr. King spoke of his dream. Here we stand where 108 years ago at another inaugural, thousands of protesters tried to block brave women marching for the right to vote. And today we mark the swearing in of the first woman in American History elected to national office, Vice President Kamala Harris. Dont tell me things cant change. Here we stand across the potomac from arlington cemetery, where heroes who gave the last full measure of devotion, rest in eternal peace, and here we stand just days after a riotous mob thought they could use violence to silence the will of the people, to stop the work of our democracy, to drive us from this sacred ground. It did not happen. It will never happen. Not today, not tomorrow, not ever. Not ever. [ [ applause ] ] for all those who have supported our campaign, im humbled by the faith youve placed in us. To those who did not support us, let me say this, hear me out as we move forward, take a measure of me and my heart, and if you still disagree, so be it. Thats democracy. Thats america. The right to dissent peaceably because perhaps this nations greatest strength. Hear me clearly, disagreement must not lead to disunion. And i pledge this to you. I will be a president for all americans, all americans. And i promise you, i will fight as hard for those who did not support me as for those who did. [ applause ] many centuries ago, st. Augustine, the saint of my church, wrote that a people was a multitude defined by the common objects of their love, defined by the common octobe obf their love. What are the common objects we as americans love, that define us as americans . I think we know. Opportunity. Security. Liberty. Dignity. Respect. Honor. And, yes, the truth. In recent weeks and months theres ban powerful lesson. There is truth and there are lies. Lies told for power and for profit. And each of us has a duty and a responsibility as citizens, as americans, and especially as leaders, leaders who have pledged to honor our constitution and protect our nation, to defend the truth and defeat the lies. Look [ applause ] i understand that many of My Fellow Americans view the future with fear and trepidation. I understand they worry ant their jobs. They worry about their families. About what comes next. I promise you i get it. But the answer is not to turn inward, to retreat into competing factions, distrusting those who dont look like you or worship the way you do or dont get their news from the same sources you do. We must end this uncivil war that pits red against blue, rural versus urban, conservative versus liberal. We can do this if we open our souls instead of hardening our hearts, if we show a little tolerance and humility, and if were willing to stand in the other persons shoes as my mom would say, just for a moment, stand in their shoes. Because heres the thing about life. Theres no accounting for what fate will deal you. Some days when you need a hand, there are other days when were called to lend a hand. Thats how it has to be. Thats what we do for one another. And if we are of this way, our country will be stronger, more prosperous, more ready for the future. And we can still disagree. My fellow americans, in the work ahead of us, were going to need each other. We need all our strength to persevere through this dark winter. Were entering what may be the toughest and deadliest period of the virus. We must set aside politics and finally face this pandemic as one nation. One nation. And i promise you this as the bible says, we may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning. We will get through this together. Together. Looks, folks, all my colleagues i serve with in the house and the senate up here, we all understand the world is watching, watching all of us today. So heres my message to those beyond our borders. America has been tested, and weve come out stronger for it. We will repair our alliances and engage with the world once again. Not to beat yesterdays challenges but todays and tomorrows challenges. And well lead not merely by the example of our power but by the power of our example. We will be a strong and trusted partner for peace, progress, and security. Look, you all know, weve been through so much in this nation. And my first act as president , id like to ask you to join me in a moment of Silent Prayer to remember all those who we lost this past year to the pandemic, those 400,000 fellow americans, moms, dads, husbands, wives, sons, daughters, friends, neighbors, and coworkers. Well honor them by becoming the people and the nation we know we can and should be. So i ask you, lets say a Silent Prayer for those who have lost their lives and those left behind and for our country. Amen. Folks, this is a time of testing. We face an attack on our democracy and on truth, a raging virus, growing inequity, sting of systemic racism, a climate in crisis. Americas role in the world, any one of us would be enough to challenge us in profound ways, but the fact is we face them all at once, presenting this nation with one of the gravest responsibilities weve had. Now were going to be tested. Are we going to step up, all of us . Its time for boldness, for theres so much to do. And this is certain i promise you, we will be judged, you and i, by how we resolve these cascaing crises of our era. Will we rise to the occasion is the question. Will we master this rare and difficult hour . Will we meet our obligations and pass along a new and better world to our children . I believe we must. Im sure you do as well. I believe we will. And when we do, well write the next great chapter in the history of the United States of mesh, The American Story, a story that might sound Something Like a song that means a lot to me. Its called american anthem. Theres one verse that stands out, at least for me. It goes like this. The work and prayers of century have brought us to this day. What shall be our legacy, what will our children say . Let me know in my heart when my days are through. America, america, i gave my best to you. Lets add, let us add our own work and prayers to the unfolding story of our great nation. If we do this, then when our days are through, our children and our childrens children will say they gave their best, they did their duty, they healed a broken land. My fellow americans, i close the day where i began, with a sacred oath. Before god and all of you, i give you my word, i will always level with you. I will defend the constitution. Ill defend our democracy. Ill defend america. And ill give all, all of you, keep everything i do in your service, thinking not of power but of possibilities, not of personal thing bus the public good. Together we shall write an american story of hope, not fear, of unity, not division, of light, not darkness, a story of decency and dignity, love and healing, greatness and goodness. May this be the story that guides us, the story that inspires us, and the story that tells ages yet to come that we answered the call of history, we met the moment. Democracy and hope, truth and justice did not die on our watch but thrived, that america secured liberty at home and stood once again as a beacon to the world. That is what we owe our fore bearers, one another and generation to follow. So with purpose and resolve, we turn to those tasks of our time, sustained by faith, driven by conviction, and devoted to one another and the country we love with all our hearts. May god bless america, and may god protect our troops. Thank you, america. [ applause ]. Ladies and gentlemen, please be seated. Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome garth brooks to perform amazing grace. Amazing grace how sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me i once was lost but now am found was blind but now i see when weve been there 10,000 years bright shining as the sun we no less days to sing gods praise than when we first begun ill ask you to sing this last verse with me, not just the people here but the people at home, at work, as one, united. Amazing grace how sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me i once was lost but now im found was blind but now i see amen. Whooo [ applause ] hard enough to be reminded of President Obamas singing that same song at the mother emmanuel church. A song that in our, kl chur is as close to both poetry and prayer as you could possibly come. And were going to finish with those two things. Let me introduce Amanda Gorman, our nations First Ever National poet laureate. [ applause ] mr. President , dr. Biden, madam Vice President , mr. Emhoff, americans and the world, when day comes we ask ourselves where can we find light in this neverending shade . The loss we carry, a sea we must wade, we braved the belly of the beast. Weve learned that quiet isnt always peace and the norms and notions of what just is isnt always just is. And yet the dawn is ours before, we knew it, somehow we do it, somehow we weathered and witnessed a nation that isnt broken but simply unfinished. We, the successors of a country and a time were where a Skinny Black Girl descended from slaves and raised by a single mother can dream of becoming president only to find herself reciting for one. And yes, we are far from polished, far from pristine, but that doesnt mean we are striving to form a union that is perfect. We are striving to forage a union with purpose, to compose a country committed to all cultures, colors, characters, and conditions of man. And so we lift our gaze not to what stands between us but what stands before us. We close the divide because we know to put our future first we must first put our differences aside. We lay down our arms so we can reach out our arms to one another. We seek harm to none and harmony for all. Let the globe, if nothing else, say this is true. That even as we grieved, we grew, that even as we hurt we hoped, even as we tired we were tied to be together, victorious, not because we will never again know defeat but because we will never again sow division. Scripture tells us to envision that everyone should sit under their own vine and fig tree and no one shall make them afraid. If were too live up to our own time, then victory wont lie in the blade but in all of the bridges weve made. That is the promise to glade, the hill we climb, if only we dare it, because being american is more than a pride we inherit. Its the past we step into and how we repair it. Weve seen a forest that would shatter our nation rather than share it, would destroy our country if it meant delaying democracy. In this effort very nearly succeeded. But while democracy can be periodically delayed, it can never be perm negligently defeated. In this truth, in this faith we trust, for while we have our eyes on the future, history has its eyes on us. This is the era of just redemption. We feared at its inception we did not prepare to be the heirs of a terrifying mile an hour, but within it we found the power to author a new chapter, to offer hope and laughter, to ourselves, so while once we asked, how could we possibly prevail over catastrophe, now we assert, how could catastrophe possibly prevail over us . We will not march back to what was but move to what shall be, a country that is bruised but whole, benevolence but bold, fierce and free. We will not be turned around or interrupted by intimidation because we know our inaction and inertia will be the inheritance of the next generation. Our blenders become their burdens. But one thing is certain. If we merge mercy with might and might with right, then love becomes our legacy and change our childrens birthright. So let us leave behind a country better than the one we were left with every breath from a bronzepounded chest. We will raise this wounded world into a wondrous one. We will rise from the Goldland Hills of the west, rise from the windswept northeast where our forefathers first realized revolution. We will rise from the Lakeland Cities of the midwestern states, from the sunbaked south. We will rebuild, reconcile, and recover. Every known nook of our nation and every corner called our country, our people diverse and beautiful will emerge battered and beautiful when we step out of the shade aflame and unafraid. The new dawn blooms as we free it. For there is always light if only were brave enough to see it. If only were brave enough to be it. [ applause ]. Thank you, Amanda Gorman. Now for our benediction, im pleased to introduce reverend dr. Silvester beeman, the pastor of the Bethel Methodist Episcopal Church in wilmington, delaware, a friend of President Biden for 30 years. As a nation and people of faith gather in this this historical moment, let us unite in prayer. God, we gather under the duty of your holiness and the holiness of your beauty. We seek your faith, your smile, your warm embrace. We petition you once more in this celebration. We pray for divine favor upon our president , joseph r. Biden, and our first lady, dr. Jill biden and their family. We further ask that you would extend the same favor upon our Vice President kamala d. Harris and our second gentleman, doug emhoff, and their family. More than ever, more than ever, they and our nation need you. We need you, for in you we discover our common humanity. In our common humanity, we will seek out the wounded and bind their wounds. We will seek healing for those who are sick and diseased. We will mourn our dead. We befriend the lonely, the least, and the left out. We will share our abundance with those who are hungry. We will do justly to the oppressed, acknowledge sin, and seek forgiveness, thus grasping reconciliation. In discovering our humanity, we will seek the good in and for all our neighbors. We will love the unlovable, remover the stigma of the socalled untouchables. We will care for our most vulnerable, our children, the elderly, emotionally challenged, and the poor. We will seek rehabilitation beyond correction. We will extend opportunity to those locked out of opportunity. We will make friends of our enemies. We will make friends of our enemies. People, your people, shall no longer raise up weapons against one another, we will rather use our resources for the National Good and become a beacon of life and good will to the world. And neither shall we learn hatred anymore. We will lie down in peace and not make our neighbors afraid. In you, o god, we discover our humanity, and in our humanity, we discover our commonens, regardless. We will become greater stewards of your environment, preserving the land, reaping from it a sustainable harvest, and securing its wonder and miraclegiving power for generations to come. This is our benediction, that from these Hallowed Grounds where slaves labored to build this shrine and citadel to liberty and democracy, let us all acknowledge from the indigenous Native American that those who recently received their citizenship, from the africanamerican to those whose foreparents came from europe and every corner of the globe, from the wealthy to those struggling to make it, for every human being regardless of their choices, that this is our country. As such, teach us, o god. As such, teach us, o god, to live in it, love in it, be healed in it, and reconcile to one another in it lest we miss kingdoms goal. To your glory, majesty, dominion and power, forever. Hallelujah, glory, hallelujah. In the strong name of our collective faith, amen. Amen. Please remain standing as the Armed Forces Color Guard retires our National Colors. Ladies and gentlemen, please be seated and remain in your seats while the president and official party di v depart the platform. For safety reasons, your ushers will release your sections in an organized manner followed by the playing of the stars and stripes forever. America and the world just heard the new american president declare democracy is precious, democracy is fragile, democracy has prevailed. 32 minutes ago, while joe biden spoke, the power of the presidency slipped from the grasp of a twiceimpeached private citizen in florida. Joe biden left no doubt he is here to serve all americans. He gave kind of Inaugural Address our president s used to give, as hopeful as the man delivering it, yet an honest reflection of a great country at its modernday low point. Beset by two viruses, one a pandemic, the other a sickness that has flowed into our politics. And the world will not soon forget a young woman named Amanda Gorman, who put a period at the end of todays events. Rachel, the message has gone out that the United States is back and under new management. I was struck by i was struck, brian, by the very consistent through line through Inaugural Address. I dont know exactly what the line will be that we remember forever. I think the one that is sticking with me is we must end this uncivil war. Joe biden has been criticized by those in his own party for his consistent and unbending dedication to the idea of unity, to the idea of a bipartisan possibility. But today, he embraced that fully. He addressed his critics and said, you know, this may sound to some of you like a fantasy, but it is the way forward, it is the path out of this. He said my whole soul is in this, uniting our people, uniting our nation. And its the grounds on which he ran for president. It was the unceasing theme of his Campaign Even in the primary, when his primary rivals, including Kamala Harris, now his Vice President , criticized him for essentially being naive to think there was unity and a bipartisan future in american politics, especially in the wake of donald trump. But that is what joe biden is staking his presidency and the idea of his ascendance to the presidency on, that america is ready to, as he put it, end this uncivil war and to see one another once again as neighbors and not enemies. Nicole wallace, to think thats all it took. Just to build on rachels observations and yours, i heard a Declaration Of War against White Supremacy and against the lies that brought our democracy to the brink. And ive been involved in a couple of Inaugural Addresses, and lines like the following are there almost in a pro forma way, but today they were not. Im thinking of these lines. I will defend the constitution. I will defend democracy. I will defend america. American president s say those things to be heard around the world as just a reupping of our values. I think everyone needed to hear those words today. I also think along with everyone on planet earth have been reading furiously about the woman who stole much of the show today, Amanda Gorman. I learned this in the New York Times. She wrote this line late in the night on the day of the insurrection, so this part i think is you talk about the lines well talk about for a long time, she wrote about the apocalyptic scene that unfolded in the capitol on january 6th, weve seen a forest that would shatter our nation rather than share it, that would destroy our country if it meant delaying democracy, and this effort very nearly succeeded. But while democracy can be periodically delayed, it can never be permanently defeated. I think to your point, brian, those are the echoes through every speaker and every performance this afternoon. Joy reed, i know when i was doing when i was 22, it wasnt what Amanda Gorman did today. Me neither. I think she truly is a star, this young lady. I think she absolutely did steal the show. I think it put a lump into the throats of everyone who heard her. But, you know, guys, i will say that today i feel like weve gone through almost a full Character Arc of The American Story. I mean, weve gone from indecency to decency. You know, joe biden is a decent man. Donald trump and joe biden are of similar age, they are of the same generation, they are demographically very similar in some ways, even though they didnt one was born with a lot of money and one was not. But they are two very, very different men and very, very different versions of The American Story. And that is the Character Arc. Weve gone from what can only be called idolatry and false religion under trump, this worship of greed and this lust for conquest, one american over another, to really what the religion, the True Religion is supposed to be, at least when i grew up in church. We heard that in those last two statements, this idea that, you know, whether or not you think its realistic, we try to love our fellow man, try to be brothers and sisters, to care about the poor, the immigrant, try to care about those in need. Thats the creed. That is the christian creed. Its what it was supposed to be before it was about stealing the children of migrants. Then weve gone from sort of ivanka trump and the other trump kids sort of acting as if they are a royal family to Amanda Gorman in her braids and her brown skin and standing up there in her 22yearold black girls body representing america, because there is an old america and there is a new america, and the new america and the old america essentially went to war in 2020, physically in the same capitol. New america won. Because new america got 80 million votes and old america got 72 million votes. And were still basically at war. And you have a new president now who wants to declare peace. It is really incredibly fascinating to me how history moves because we do have sort of another person trying to do what lincoln did, trying it again, and were going to take a second shot at trying to end this civil war, you know, between an america that feels that some people are captors and some are captives and an america that, you know, grant believed in, you know, and that the radical republicans believed in in lincolns time. We have to try to do this again. God bless joe biden. This is truly deeply religious man with incredible compassion, and hes got a great partner in Kamala Harris, you know, whos a stepmom, you know, and sort of accessible kind of human being that you can recognize. This is new america. And i hope new america wins the war. Michael beschloss is back with us. Michael, we have a new president , donald trump now a former president. Thats for sure, and i think weve got two book ends on the last four years. I think what President Biden suggested, and i think this is going to be the view of history, is that for four years history was hijacked by donald trump, taken in a white supremacist democratic and joe biden wants something new. This is a president who is very aware of the fact that, as we were talking earlier, unlike Franklin Roosevelt facing a Great Depression or a lincoln facing the civil war, joe biden has got about five crises at once. Hes got to deal with them all right now. And thats exactly what he was saying. But the three words in the speech will be known for are democracy has prevailed. So nice to have a happy ending. Indeed it is. And indeed it has. And indeed Lawrence Odonnell joins our coverage and has been watching. Lawrence . Brian, joe biden had to deliver the speech of his life, and he did. In my lifetime, i have never seen a more challenging Inaugural Address. Joe bidens message had to be about unity, and it had to be delivered at a time when unity was seemed impossible in this country. He had he talked about unity in detail, but he also framed it realistally. The very first thing, the first thing he said about unity was it is the most elusive of all things in a democracy. So that doesnt contain a promise of a kind of full 50state unity that people might think of when they think of that word. He also said repeatedly, enough of us have come together, enough of us. So his definition of unity that hes talking about is a governing unity that will be more than 50 of the country, that will be more than 50 of the House Of Representatives and ultimately of the senate. He expects to be able to pick up some republican votes in the senate. And so the unity joe biden was talking about was both poetic and realistic at the same time. What he did in about 21 minutes was absolutely astonishing under these incredibly challenging circumstances in which his National Audience cannot invest a lot of credibility in the concept that he was trying to deliver throughout the speech, which was unity. And the part about his soul is in it, which he took from Abraham Lincoln, quoting him, saying, my whole soul is in it when he signed the emancipation proclamation, anyone who knows and worked with joe biden as i did in the senate for many years, knows that is the truest statement you could get about joe bidens commitment to his work. His whole soul is in it. You can think what you like about joe bidens policies, but you should never doubt that his whole soul is in this job. Were also joined by former senator Claire Mccaskill as we watch this gathering of former president s saying their goodbyes, barack obama and Elizabeth Warren, for example. Claire, theres a gathering on the backside, the east side of the capitol because i guess on days like this weve got to say farewell to somebody. I think its going to be mike pence of indiana whos going to get in that suv and drive out into the sunset. Your thoughts on what we have just witnessed and the new management taking over. Its quite a contrast. I remember vividly what it felt like when this ceremony was over four years ago. I remember walking back into the Senate Chamber and talking with some of my republican colleagues who were in shock over the president s speech, the Dystopian Carnage that seemed to be front and center in an address that typically is supposed to be uplifting. Now, fast forward, and you have our new president leading the country in a moment of Silent Prayer for all of the losses that had been suffered from this deadly disease. Its quite a contrast. And i think its one that will sit well with a vast majority of americans. I also am mad at Amanda Gorman because i couldnt quit crying. And so finally, i quit crying and i got my mascara and my powder and got it all better, and then she started, and then i started crying again. What a wonderful way to finish this ceremony with a young woman who has her finger on the pulse of a glorious language and the passion that can come with it when the words are put together in such a melodic way. The Vice President of the United States is saying goodbye to the former Vice President of the United States. And youll note when we cut to the wide shot, again, officer goodman, the gentleman in the Camel Hair Coat there at the rear of the suv, may be what separated the former Vice President pence from a mob yelling they wanted to hang him. Kamala harris, doug emhoff now say their farewells and watch whats going to be the only departure from the capitol. Theres no former president around. He flew the coop to florida. So the pences get the big sendoff, the big farewell that would have gone to a former president. Striking here, brian, that because this moment is mike pences and not Donald Trumps, it means that the sendoff is from the new Vice President , is from Kamala Harris and the second gentleman, doug emhoff, instead of the incoming president having that moment of standing at the steps while the transition is affect waited. Spotlights Vice President harris as much as it does former Vice President pence in this moment today donald trump abdicate his responsibilities in this moment. Signatory of a sort. Meanwhile, the last twoterm president was just seen with the former first lady saying their goodbyes inside the capitol. Its over. Its over. Mike pence was the de facto head of the de facto White House Coronavirus task force, and that is something he and history are going to have to reconcile with. He leaves the capital city with a death toll of over 400,000 of his fellow citizens this pandemic that has cast a pall across our entire country. Im certain that mike pence, along with many of the politicians we saw on camera view today would like very much to forget that, to forget about this part of their past. Our present, our future, as the pandemic with every passing day reaches a new high. Less than 5 of the worlds population, we have the largest death toll on earth, the largest epidemic on effort, the worst managed epidemic of any industrialized country. That will never be anything other than a Headline Legacy of the outgoing administration. It also creates the biggest hole out of which the new Administration Must dig. Please . Okay. All right. Congratulations. Thank you. Congratulations. And after mitch mcconnell, last but not least is the republican leader kevin mccarthy, who it cannot be stressed enough after the ransacking of the capitol, came back to the House Chamber to lead his caucus in a vote not to certify the election results. A whole lot of people have a whole lot of explaining to do as History Bears down on them. History, of course, always in a footrace with our kind of uniquely american desire to fuzz up memories and gloss over all kinds of sleights. This one may stay with us for a while. You see senator cory booker on the right side of the screen. Usually, after the Inaugural Address one of the things that the elected officials go do is have a big lunch at the capitol. For pandemic reasons that will not be happening this year. That time allows the people at the white house whose job it is to move in the belongings of the new first family allows them some time to do so. Theyre having to scramble today. Senator chris coons, who on a day like today is a tourist like the rest of us. Might have been a nominee for Secretary Of State had it not been that this razor thin Senate Majority made a majority only with the promise of the v. P. There to be able to break ties would have suffered the loss of a democrat from its ranks. Im thinking of what you, brian and rachel have been said about the republicans who after the insurrection. They are Walking Around what is still a crime scene. I saw tom winter reporter. There are charges, eight to ten a day. The Justice Department is looking at Sedition Charges for some people. The reason the republicans who after Criminal Sedition was carried out in the capitol came out and voted to disenfran chise, the reason they are allowed to mull about so comfortably today even after that act is because of joe bidens grace. The President Elect displayed such grace and it should not go overlooked that grace and his commitment to unity is what allows the republicans, who should be aashamed of themselve, it allows them to move about comfortably in their workplace today. Joe bidens grace. Nicole, i was thinking the exact same thing. I kind of feel a certain way about them being there. Seeing ted cruz there. Something kind of Blood Boiling about it. These people tried to reverse the election and then show up for the sober ceremony as if they are statesmen. Joe biden clearly is a much better person than i because i would not have had them there. It doesnt seem appropriate. Mike pence was the potential victim of a lynch mob. How do people like, you know, ted cruz face him . What do they say to him . He was the potential victim. People were hunting him. Hunting nancy pelosi, speaker pelosi. Do they even speak to them today . What do they say to them . I dont understand whether theres any introspection and if theres none on the people like ted cruz or josh hawley or kevin mccarthy, why isnt there . How do they turn around and face mike pence . I say this ruefully, introspection is not the gops game. Thats not what they do. I think this is, and joe biden addressed it today, this is a construction of lies that has created a parallel universe. We spent too much time wondering what donald trump meant when he called for the proud boys to stand by. What the racist heard was always a green light from limb. What the Insurrectionists Heard from josh hawley and ted cruz was enthusiasm for their efforts and we can debate and it will be investigated whether or not there was any conspiracy or involvement but with the Insurrectionists Heard was a Permission Structure from republicans in congress and i dont have an answer,000 they mule about and act like that didnt happen. My theory would be theres still a loot of puncturing that Fantasy World and puncturing through the lies. Joe biden made clear thats a priority for him. As we watch former Secretary Of State, former first lady, Hillary Clinton greeting senator cory booking and others there at the capitol. Lets bring into the conversation reverend al sharpton. Rev, i know youve been watching along with us. I thought of you watching the benediction from the reverend when he said one word that he utter twice. Make friends of our eneenemies. Make friends of our eneenemies. A Capstone Of Unify from that inauguration from joe biden. What did you make of that . I thought the benediction was very good. I know him very well. I thought that joe bidens Inaugural Address was the right tone because he did not just say lets have some empty unity. He specifically addressed what were facing. To see a president talk about White Supremacy and talk about the pandemic. He talked about what we need to unite around. It wasnt empty. I thought that was probably the best speech ive heard joe biden give. Ive known him for decades. I choked up when Kamala Harris was sworn in as Vice President. When i was 18, i worked for Shirley Chisolm campaign for president. Jesse jackson said we ought to have a women on the ticket. It took a lot to bring us to this today. To see amanda. This was been a moving, historic day. Well hold him accountable. Today i think they rose to the occasion and pettiness caught a flight to florida. Prevented from exercising their democratic rights to protest in pursuit of their democratic right to vote and now to have madam Vice President sworn in. You could feel this. This was a first moment in the inaugural where you felt this surge of energy go through those assemble. This sort of release moment, recognizing the struggle of those who went before and the achievements in history today. Rev, it terms of what nicole and joy were talking about recrimination and accountability and the fact that this is still a crime scene, do you think that joe bidens call for unity, that call to make friends of our enemies to end this uncivil war is in conflict with the idea of accountability and people having to answer for what they were part of in the attack on the capitol and the lie about the election that led to it . You cant have unity without accountability because what are we united around. I think you can befriend your enemy but your enemy must be accountable for their deed. I dont think one is in conflict with the other. To have unity without accountability is to really destroy the unity that you claim that you want to see. I think that when we can see some of those that cheered on either verbally or by later giving some kind of subtle nod to what had happened on the at the capitol building, i think they have to be held accountable including the ted cruzs and those that sat there today smiling and acting as though they were happy to see the new administration to come in when they did everything they could to dismantle democracy two wednesdays ago. After a siege they went ahead to certify against if findings what happened at the polls. I thought it was reckless but i think Joe Biden Rose above it but it doesnt mean they rise above the law. Reverend al sharpton, well check back with you. Good to have you here. I want you to help me. I want you and i to get an outfit like lady gaga had on. Well need a big strapping captain to help us down any stairs once we do so but aside from that, provided thats part of the deal, yes. Joy is the fashion expert. I want her to wear the lady gada on her shelf. I have to say before rev goes, i have an update. I do have breaking news update. This is specifically for you rev as well as for rachel. I have consulted with the expert bevy smith, you know her well. Shes a fashion empresario. Michelle obama was wearing Sergio Hudson and shes an africanamerican designer. Lady gaga was in shaparello and jlo was in chanel, fyi. Im calling your husband to what you to wear. They would need to take a nuller shot because its usually from here but i will make it work because i never say no to pastor. I listen to my
