Already in. Meantime of course the president refusing to concede the election repeating his baseless claims that the election was a fraud. Lets go to carol lee standing by for us in washington. Welcome to you. What did the president say today if anything on this . He made a number of very familiar being aing could yaccud that wont sound new to you, but he continues to make them. He also vented a range of frustrations on everyone from his own Justice Department to the governor of georgia who is a republican and ale lie. T ally. The president said he was ashamed that he endorsed him. And he took aim at the Judicial System Making Unfounded accusations of unfairness there. Take a listen. They dont want to take the affidavits. Then they say we dont have proof. I wanted to file one suit, donald j. Trump president of the United States against, you know and put everything into one simple suit and they say sir, you dont have standing. I say i dont have standing. You mean as president of the United States, i dont have standing. What kind of a court system is this . Reporter now, that last part gives and you window in to the president s frustrations with the limits of the powers of the presidency and checks and balances that are built into our system of government. You heard him there, he also went on to say that if the Supreme Court doesnt take one of his cases, then what is the point of Supreme Court essentially. And he also spoke about he revealed that he would not change his mind even if all of his cases are dismissed, if all the states certify the votes, if joe biden wins the election, he said it will not change my mind even six months from now, im still going to feel the same way. Well, good for him. Lets me ask you about another thing that were certainly concerned good which is the Coronavirus Infection rate. It is surging across this country. How is the white house responding to august the startling new numbers . We heard from dr. Fauci on meet the press. The startling new numbers . We heard from dr. Fauci on meet the press. He said essentially well see another surge and there will be more Travel Warnings around the Christmas Holiday. And that the cdc will meet next week to discuss their recommendations to states in terms of who should receive the vaccine first. And he said Vaccine Trials on children which is a key point will be beginning in january. He went on to chuck todd asked him what his advice to biden would be and he said that he needs to maintain an effective Distribution System for the vaccine and that he would expand tests so that it includes asymptomatic people because that is so much of what is causing these spikes in cases. He also was asked if he thought President Trump would become one of the voices out there urging people not to travel around the Christmas Holiday and urging them to wear masks. And he said he didnt know he said it is possible, i dont think that i have any power in that regard. So that is dr. Fauci saying he doesnt necessarily have power in that space. And yet what weve seen from the President Elect biden is that he wants to talk about coronavirus, he is actively talking about coronavirus nearly every day, him and his team. So a contrast there. Yeah, ill be speaking in a bit with one of incoming bidens covid Advisory Board members to see if maybe the transition and the slowing of that process is also slowing the distribution of the vaccine. Thank you very much, carol. Lets go now to one of the busiest rest stops in lake forest, illinois, many travelers opted for a safer route this thanksgiving season, driving. Aaa reports nearly 48 million vehicles were out on the roads. And Cory Coughlin is keeping an eye on things with the home bound traffic. And you are right there in this very busy rest stop. How does this years travel compare to this time last year . Reporter you know what, it is early similar. And travel not that much lower according to aaa. They say that their estimation is that it will be down about 4. 3 nationwide. But they dont have those final numbers yet and they made those estimations in october before the numbers got really bad. So they say travel could be down a little lower, but not much to be honest. I mean, weve got a busy scene here behind us, like you said, one of the Busiest Travel Stops in the nation, right on the illinois wisconsin border. The slight dip in car travel is nothing compared to what aaa told me the Airline Industry sustained. Listen in. This year 2. 5 Million People were going to be traveling by plane. And that is different from last year which was 4. 5. That is a 47 drop. Reporter so road trips vastly outweigh air travel, 95 of people preferring to drive, understandably so. And when i talk to travelers out here, they were kind of split 50 50 with changes in plans. One woman i talked to said that they did change their plans eating outside and Wearing Masks versus other people. Listen in. No, there was nobody at risk, but we still covered our face because his parents are a little older. So we took precautions. Reporter and then they shortened their trip as well. And then you have the other half of people who they said that they didnt want to make any changes whatsoever including going out in black friday shopping. And then there was the 50 50 split for people saying whether or not they would isolate. So only about half the population who did go somewhere plans on isolating. Doctors say we could see those effects in one three weeks. Lets hope everyone did wear a mask and they dont live to regret making bad choices. Now to Staten Island, new york where the recent spike in covid cases is overwhelming the hospitals there. This week Governor Cuomo opened an emergency Field Hospital on Staten Island for the First Time Since the spring now anticipating a postholiday surge. Lindsey riser is out side of that Field Hospital for us. What is happening there and what are the expectations for the coming weeks . Reporter they already have patients in the Field Hospital, they are expecting that number to grow. I want to show you where we are right now. The Brick And Mortar building behind me is a psychiatric facility that hasnt opened yet, that is the Field Hospital. And ill get to that in a minute. But see these tents, this is a staterun covid testing facility. So people can drive up, they dont need appointments, it is free. There is a National Guard person here guiding cars along. Nobody is here right now, but we have seen cars drive in this morning. There is a sign also that says make sure that you have your window rolled up until you get to that testing area. But that psychiatric facility that never opened, that is the Field Hospital. And that was also a Field Hospital open during the peak here from april to june. At that time they had 250 people go through those doors. Right now they have 14 patients. The medical director here tells me he expects that number to double tomorrow. But these are nonserious cases in the Field Hospital. The really urgent cases, they go to the main hospital. In fact there is a third facility about 9 miles south of where we are, and that is where other routine procedures, things like Cancer Treatments can still happen. But right now the situation here in Staten Island is worrisome, they have more cases than they did in the aftermath of july 4th or labor day. And here in this borough, they pride themselves on personal responsibility, but even local leadership is taking its constituents to task saying you are not social distancing and not Wearing Masks. And this is really foreboding of what is to come in this new phase, this new Field Hospital that is opening. We have a Holiday Season upon us, we have cooler temperatures, but the medical director here says that this is no time to let up. Lets listen. Shortsighted. The vaccine is on the way. We have actually very exquisite plans to distribute the vaccines once available. But they wont be available in time to stem this surge. Reporter so right now in new york city, we could expect Indoor Dining and gyms to close. So again, this Field Hospital open, the numbers only growing here. Hopefully people will listen to that doctors message. 100 hopefully. Thank you so much. An explosive front page Washington Post article is taking us inside the white house in the weeks after the president lost the election. The article slams trumps many failed legal pursuits saying in part trump endangered americas democracy, threatened to undermine National Security and Public Health and duped millions of his supporters into believing perhaps permanently that biden w elected illegitimately. That paper spoke with 32 Administration Officials who chose to remain anonymous. This is a heck of an article to discussion. Hayes, your reaction. I mean, weve seen it via his twitter feed and his few experiences since the election. He has just been stewing and being encouraged in [ [ Inaudible Question unwilling to hear it and turned to people that would tell him what he wanted to hear. That there is a way forward that you can pull it out through these contact these lawsuits. And it is only in recent days that trump has started to turn away from that and finally accepted that he has to turn over the keys to the transition even as his advisers say that legitimate fights do still continue in court. It is a great piece of reporting, but it shows the internal mechanisms of what weve been seeing play out live. And letting you know that were having and you had whiccus with you, we got the gist of what youre saying, but well have the Control Rotry to tweet that. And 32 officials trying to speak out. Yeah, this is essentially confirmation of everything that weve seen play out over the last several weeks. This is also, you know, the president realizing that court of law is very different from a court of Public Opinion which is very much the Playing Field that he has been in over the last four years. This is also what happens when you spend multiple years of your life and your presidency certainly living in the twitter and Fox News Media sphere. But he has spent so much time being convinced that not only was this election going to be illegitimate, but even that the 2016 election which he won was ill legitimate. We call when he said that there were 3 million to 5 million illegal ballots cast which was not true. He spent months before this election convincing essentially crusading against early and mailin voting which may have depressed turnout among his own voters and contributed to his popular vote loss to joe biden. And now were seeing the consequences play out in these two really essential runoff elections taking place in georgia which will decide control of the senate. And you know, republicans are in a conundrum now because they have a president and Many Republican lawmakers who have spent so long saying this election is illegitimate and now voters in that state confronting the rnc chairwoman saying ifs fix is in, if this is illegitimate, why should we bother participating. So that is the Messaging Strategy that were left with. Mixed messages absolutely. Let me ask you about the pennsylvania Supreme Court court. It officially rejected trumps lawsuit against the mailin ballots. What is the significance of this particular and final ruling . Yeah, this is basically the End Of The Road in pennsylvania. This lawsuit was brought by republican representative mike kelly and seven other republican plaintiffs and essentially sought to invalidate more than 2. 5 million mailin ballots. And the pennsylvania Supreme Court unanimously rejected this request from the plaintiffs and said that if they had an issue with this, they should have filed a legal challenge a year ago when the procedures were first put into place. We had one judge saying that it was very clear that this lawsuit was brought because after two elections that already used the mailin voting process, republicans saw a result that they didnt like and that is why they were bringing this lawsuit. And just because you dont like something doesnt mean that you have the legal standing to challenge it. And thats exactly what they said in their written report there. Okay. Hayes, back to you. I hope youve hooked back up with us as we talk about the Washington Post article which also revealed fractures in the relationship between donald trump and his trusted lawyer rudy giuliani. One adviser in fact said that trump was embarrassed by that news conference, the one where hair dye was seen running down his face. But you recently wrote an article where you said that i believe this country owes a deep debt of gratitude to the former mayor of new york city, he is trumps worst enemy in the form of a close friend and legal counsel. What do you mean by that . I mean that giuliani has been for basically the entirety of trumps presidency and even before hand been encouraging trump to be at his worst. He has encouraged the Conspiracy Theories, he more or less got trump impeached by encouraging him to hunt down Conspiracy Theories in ukraine. And after the campaign, he sidelined a potential actual legal strategy that could have been put into place, instead going for these wild Conspiracy Theories up there along cindy powell and others claiming that hugo chavez somehow masterminded this whole scheme to steal the election from donald trump. So if it werent for giuliani, he might have actually been listening to people who are credible, who could actually help him. Instead he turned to giuliani who has been a loyal friend since at least 2015. And together they have made terrible, terrible decisions. Ones that i think actually benefited the country in the long run by keeping trump away from better advice. Yeah, i got to tell you, i stopped listening at hugh o chavez. That was ridiculous. Dont you think donald trump benefitted for look at the long yefri i Jeffrey Givity y of time that weve been talking about issues. Giuliani was very adept the Sowing Confusion and discord. So that worked for donald trump. It did, but it didnt get him to his ultimate goal. He still has not won the presidency. January 20th joe biden will become president. So in the long run, this actually backfires. They have two senate seats coming up in georgia. And if you are voters, people who would be supporting you, they are not focusing on that election. So in the long run, this will hurt them way more than us just talking about it for the last couple of weeks has been helping him. Okay. Thank you both for helping us. And iran following the killing of irans Top Nuclear Scientist in an apparent attack near tehran. Iran either suspects or knows that israel was responsible for this attack. And then of course kind of by association they are going to assume that we either clab brats a collaborated or were witnessing of the israelis actions. Iranians will have to retaliate. I dont see anyway around it. They will have to save face. Neither israel nor the Trump Administration are commenting on the killing. But pentagon officials announced that the uss nimitz is returning to the area. Joining me now, former Supreme Allied Commander at nato and also author of oig tthe accide admiral on i. Do you agree that iran will have to retaliate in some form, and is that why the uss nimitz is being redeployed . Certainly these bills will come due. Eventually iran will retaliate. And of course it wont be just for the killing of the nuclear scientist, it really goes back to general and the killing of general sulemani. And they may be right that they can still negotiate with the incoming Biden Administration. And ill tell you as you look at the timing of this attack, which no doubt was long in the setting up, this was a complex killing, would have taken months if not years to put it all in place. But the timing, the decision to pull the trigger in this interim between an extremely hawkish Trump Administration and an incoming more aligned toward diplomacy Biden Administration makes you think that the israelis consciously selected this moment to do it, tensions will rise and eventually, yes, the iranians will come back for what they feel is their due in terms of revenge. So you are a learned man and the supposition that is the israelis is one thing, they have yet to publicly comment nor has the United States. But if you are correct, if the israelis are the ones behind this, to what degree is it responsible that the United States did not have at least a takes s tacet understanding of what was coming . My guess is that in general terms the israelis, if they did this, you are correct we dont know that, and they are currently denying it although it has all the hallmarks of a well executed operation, my guess is that the israelis would have given a general heads up that, hey, Something Big is going to go down. The iranians may lash out. I suspect that is what is behind the nimitz returning to the per shan gulf. And a week ago, the u. S. Also deployed a force of our heavy b52 massive long range bombers. On we definitely were moving forces into the region. I would say a good guess would be that we had a heads up. So just over a week before this leak on the iranian scientist, you had mike pompeo becoming the first u. S. Top diplomat to visit an israeli settlement in the occupied west bank. And then a few days later he was in saudi arabia around the same time that Benjamin Netanyahu was there. Can we put all of these things together, is there a connection . Well, certainly the pompeo visit is in line with the ongoing efforts of the administration, the outgoing administration, to stay very close to israel and construct a collaboration between israel and the gulf arabs. Whether you can draw a line from that general propensity to this particular incident is more difficult to is and i. It is surprising to me that, again, this late in the administration, the u. S. Secretary of state chooses to go to the west bank, go to an israeli settlement, something that has been opposed by u. S. Policy for decades as we pursue a two state solution. This is something that you will see shift pretty dramatically with an incoming Biden Administration. And lets talk about that with the transition. Retired admiral mike mullen mcmullen, rather, said that he is concerned about the damage that trump loyalists in the pentagon right now could do before augusta dinauguration da. What is your biggest fear . It is unfolding in front of our eyes which is a Ratcheting Up of tension that creates a big incident in the arabian golf by the iranians perhaps in response to this event. In the north Korean Peninsula where kim jungun may feel that he wants to do something dramatic, in the South China Sea where our u. S. Navy destroyers are challenging china. In all of those areas, alex, time is not on our side in the sense that many of our poeb ops are looking at the Ticking Clock toward the inauguration, they think that were distracted, they may take a shot. And your prospect on the Courtesy Granting of daily Intelligence Briefings to rd when he is former President Trump, your thoughts on that. I am for the continued traditional practices here. And i think everything that we can do to return to normal would make a lot of sense. Having said that, i think that it would have to be under the presumption that President Trump would guard that classified information. And if he did not do so, either by tweeting about it, talking about it, making Business Decisions based on it, then tha from him. I have a new total for your book, the address 34mirable adm. I made that mistake. Good to see you. Ravages of covid19 seem to be worsening, but what are the greatest challenges ahead . A member of the Advisory Board will join me next. And i want to note the passing of the man who played darth vader, david prowse was a 67 english body builder and that fit nicely for the characters. He died yesterday at the age of 85. But well remind you that you actually never heard from him as darth because it was legendary James Earl Jones and his magnetic voice actually delivered all the dialogue. Help me take this mask off. But youll die. Nothing can stop that now. W youre all, youre all i need youre all, youre all i need as long as i got you then baby you know that youve got me, oh yea. President elect biden wants to start on day one with a specific focus on populations that display disparities and more cases of Covidimpacting Miy populations and as well as populations that are not well entinterfaced with medical deliy systems. Having the act to understand the disparities that are present in the current response, strengthen them and hopefully building an element of transparency and trust that the American People are asking for. Got to tell you, sounds like a tall order, but im sure he will hit the ground running, both he and Kamala Harris in fact putting that into effect. As we know about the vaccine likely to be in the inokay lags process by the time joe biden is sworn in, are you concerned about the new administration taking over that distribution from a administration that has indicated bringing biden into the process . Any places that you think would fall through the cracks . Well, we know that the current administrations attempt to identify where the vaccines need to be distributed has been a robust one. In talking to state and local municipalities, they are well along in discussion. We are going to review the Trump Administrations plans for distribution and again, factor in our concerns that those without a strong royg voice who not been part of the discussion to date, those this essential services, those Who Have Public facing jobs that put them in a transmission threat, we need to have personal protective equipment available to them, we need to have Testing Strategies that keeps them aware of their potential exposures, test them in it and lois tallows the quarantining and return to work aspects of that to be streamlined and readily available to all and not just first responders. So an equity of need, an equity of distribution to address and follow the despairisparitiedisp. To these points that are you making with the discussion about the underserved communities, minority communities and the like that have suspicions about vaccinations, how do you change that. Do we have the time to implement that education . Well, youre right. I think President Elect biden and vp elect harris are keenly focused on that issue, on understanding the elements that build trust in communities that have reason to doubt it, our ability to begin and sustain an open dialogue with honest discussions around availability, distribution challenges and barriers, and together develop that Implementation Effort that we then move toward in a Blueprint Type Action but are honest about our frustrations in moving to program rapidly. So together with an honest discussion about the challenge, we believe that the Biden Harris Administration will move this forward and gain the trust of the population. It is going to be incumbent upon leadership across the country to have a united voice on this. In fact south dakota reported a Record Number of coronavirus deaths yesterday. And there is still no statewide mask mandate there and the republican governor calling it a personal choice. So how challenging will it be for the Incoming Administration to inherit such a divided view on the virus, how do we get it under control without the cooperation of all leaders putting forth the same message . I think youve said it twice, the ability to be honest and clear about the threat, and explain that with only 12 of the population having been exposed to covid at this point, Waiting For Herd Immunity by individuals getting ineffected one infected one person at a time is not a viable strategy. The acceleration that the vaccinations afford the United States and the world in moving toward a herd immunity, we can rapidly move up into the 60 and 70 with protective antibody. And that is our goal. There is no question that that will be a concerted effort that will require a national, state and local implementation component. But we are talking and thinking about all of that right now. Doctor, thank you so much, sir, well look forward to speaking with you again. And coming up next, President Trumps delusions in his fight to overturn t turturn election and is it delusional to think that he might run for president again. Think that he might run for president again. The weighiWashington Post calling it 20 days of fantasy saying it exemplified some of the life in the white house. Advisers nourishing his tables, expletive laden feuds. And a pernicious blurring of truth and fantasy. The post spoke with 32 senior Administration Officials who for the most part chose to remain anonymous. Joining me now, don callaway, susan del percio, and david jolly. First to you, susan, what do you make of this new reporting. How do you think History Will Look Black Ack at this period . I think it is consistent with trump throughout his tenure as president. He lives in his own world. It is how he wants to see it. He expects even to be on his, quote, side and if you are not with him, you are against him. Of course he is living in some kind of delusional world if he doesnt think that he actually lost the election. He did. And the courts keep telling him. I dont know how many times he wants to lose pennsylvania or georgia. And i mean, he lost michigan again. He keeps losing and losing an and losing. Time to stop with the lawsuits and he may try to figure out his next move, but for right now, maybe he should focus on like the 2,000 people who are dying every day. Maybe that is what he should focus on. We need covid funding, relief package funding. So maybe he should stop playing golf, stop feeling sorry is for himself and still do his job. And the post article goes on to say that the trump empo r empowered loyalists who were willing to tell him what he wanted to hear, that he wohe wo have won if the election had not been rigged and waging a campaign in the courtrooms to convince the public of that delusion. How much of what weve seen in the past weeks is partly because the president has surrounded himself with people who tell him what he wants to hear . Would we be in this situation if advisers sat him down and told him the truth . Yeah, that is a great question, but none of those advisers will actually go to work for donald trump. Consider just among the Legal Community the number of rep vladimir put reputable lawmakers that said we wont have a meritless claim because their reputation is on the line as well. Weve seen the phrase only the best people. Weve seen people either with compromised reputations, compromised ability to actually perform on behalf of a president or perhaps just compromised by their own affinity to donald trump the man. But i think the reason this feels different in this interim between the election and the inauguration is were now seeing donald trump untethered from the power of the presidency. The mystique has gone. He is now a failed incumbent who lost reelection. And so all of these fits and starts he is attempting arent working. Because this is now joe bidens america. This is now the incoming joe Biden Administration and presidency. And so where donald trump used to command the awesome powers of the presidency, those are waning here in the final days. And they will continue to do so until january 20th. That said, don, Will Cothis S there is new reporting that donald trump is gearing up for a potential 2024 run. Lets take a listen to Kamala Harris when asked about the prospect of a rematch. President trump has been Making Motions that he will run again in 2024. Do you feel like you and President Elect biden would be ready to face him again . Please. [ laughter ] did she take the words or the laughter right out of your mouth . I mean how do you feel about that. I had not seen that clip, but that is a fantastic answer. Completely, it is on brand that the president would probably try to run again. Why . Because of everything my fellow panelists have said. But if you consider the totality of not only his presidency but also his life, his 75 years on this earth, he is defined by one thing, that is the relentless pursuit of self interests. That is why he doesnt care about the pandemic that is why he surrounds his office with yemen, that is why he discriminated and evikcted blac people because his only concern is himself. So the pattern that he would run again in 2024 because it is a continued exercise in self. And i think her answer is interesting because i think that there is a very real prospect that joe biden could be a one term president. So whether or not the reporter knew it, she could have essentially been asking about Kamala Versus President Trump in 2024. So david, were almost out of time, but the daily beast reports that President Trump is discussing a possible 2024 event on bidens inauguration day. How trump would best time his announcement so as to keep the Republican Party behind him for the next four years. Doesnt this muddy chances for other so other gop candidates will step up and say no. Look, if trump tries Counter Programming on january 20th, it will simply demonstrate the indecency of the man both as president and as an individual. But i think what to watch for coming forward is this, the difference between Trumpism The Political Philosophy and donald trump the man who controls the party, trumpism the populism is here to stay. You are seeing traditional conservatives like josh holly, mooub marco rubio, try to adopt it. But they reject the man. If donald trump tries to keep control of the party, dont believe this works. And the big question for whomever the nominee is in 2024, how do you win. Republicans have now lost seven of the past eight popular votes. And so it wont be through a donald trump run in 2024. And i do hope you all will come back next sunday. I love these conversations. I dont know what else to say except nobody put me in this position but myself, so i just took it on full force. Where do you find the strength to do it, jenna, because i came away after watching you feeling so small in myself in comparison to you. I dont know where you find that strength. Is it the love you have for your family that just keeps you so devoted . Yeah. My dad has raised us that family is like the most important thing, and it kind of, like, drives the passion or the will to do things, especially in the Holiday Season. Christmas is my fathers favorite holiday. Some people say dont decorate before thanksgiving, but its a big holiday and brings us all together in our house. Is that what keeps you going, the small moments like that where you decorate the house, i dont know, maybe after halloween, right . You get christmas going. Its Little Things like that. Yeah, its definitely Little Things like that. You know, the first time that my dad held my son was like the best feeling in the entire world, that he was able to meet him due to his health. How about some of the other stories, richard, that you heard about while you were making this film . So many diverse voices, so many diverse experiences. Give me a moment or two that stands out to you. Alex, a lot of folks think when we talk about caregiving, its folks like my age taking care of an older father. In this case, you know, the stories that we decided to focus on were students, 5 million of them in america, that are taking care of a loved one all across the country. So, you know, jenna is in michigan, but were also in mcminimumvilm mcminville, tennessee, were in california, were in ohio. The purpose is to show that despite our geographic differences, despite maybe looking different, growing up differently, in the film youll see some young folks that really do inspire, that really do show us, hey, you know whats next in the next couple of decades . It feels really good. Yeah. Does it feel good, jenna, in this film when richard calls you the great next generation . Thats got to be a nice pat on the back. What do you take from that . I feel like my generation gets a lot of hate sometimes, but i consider personally, myself, to be i dont want to say not a part of this generation, just, i guess, raised differently. I mean, i have a mindset of probably like a 32yearold and i have a feeling that a lot of other people in this film are a lot more mature and have a more mature mindset as well. So they are a part of the next greater generation. Yeah, the next greatest generation. Lets make it superlative. Richard, what do you want viewers to take away from this film . Its been a tough time, alex, and youve reported so much on the difficulty of the pandemic, what were going through as well with a racial pandemic, if you will. Yeah. And i think folks will see those two on top of each other and say, hey, theres some people right in front of me, there are people that are younger and older that are doing something amazing. Lets just look closer, because helping somebody else have a meal or holding them up or giving them a pill is much more than that. It is a big deal , as we both know. It is certainly showing how to care for other people. Yeah, and youve done that so well, as you said, over the years, your longdistance trips to california to care for your father, my longdistance trips to los angeles to care for my mother, although my father helped as well. Everyone needs to watch this. Youll get another perspective and youll think jenna is such a hero, which you are. Good luck with the film. Its called, everybody, sky blossom diaries of the next great generation. It is the key to getting all of our lives back to normal, and there is an Emergency Meeting about it on tuesday.
