The attack took place in the rural municipality of Caledno Colombia`Kaka Province. The region is strategically important for drug trafficking and is disputed by armed groups, including the democratic Farakka guerrilla group, the National Liberation Army (ELN), and other criminal organizations made up of former right-wing paramilitary forces. “So far 31 indigenous people have been injured and five attackers have been detained by the indigenous guard,” the Regional Council of Indigenous People in Cauca (CRIC) said in a statement.
