Demolition of Tuscaloosa’s McFarland Mall began in earnest on Tuesday, clearing the way for a proposed multi-use, sports complex that developers described as a destination for all ages. Under a clear, cool sky, crews began dismantling the western portion of the mall that has stood at the corner of Skyland and McFarland boulevards since the late 1960s. “It’s extremely exciting for me,” Tuscaloosa developer Stan Pate, who purchased the mall site in 2009, said of the demolition. “It’s been a long time coming, developing a vision. It’s taken various paths, but we’re on the final path.”
