Longboat Key Mayor Ken Schneier urged state lawmakers to improve the vaccine distribution effort. Vaccines currently are available to anyone 65 and older. Schneier suggested targeting vaccines to individuals age 75 and older, who are more vulnerable, and allowing everyone eligible to sign up and then distributing vaccines through a lottery. Obtaining a vaccine in Sarasota and Manatee counties currently involves waiting for the online signup window to get an appointment, which are booking up within minutes. “Make this critical process work better than it has," Schneier said on Wednesday morning. On Wednesday afternoon, the Manatee County Commission adopted a lottery system for distributing vaccines.
