Braden Fastier/Stuff West Coast-Tasman MP Damien O'Connor, left, tours the Matiri hydro scheme powerhouse with Pioneer Energy chief executive Fraser Jonker which included a look at the 4.8MW Francis turbine. West Coast-Tasman MP Damien O’Connor, who officiated at Friday's opening, described the Matiri scheme as an example of an outcome “we need across the world – that's renewable energy”. A run-of-the-river scheme, such as Matiri, was “about as good as it gets”. “Yes, there may be some impact but it can be mitigated and what they've done here is amazing,” O’Connor said. “They've provided additional access for people to recreate up here in this incredible area.”
