Soil erosion by the Brahmaputra river at Bhakat Chapari in Majuli on Friday JORHAT: Amid the Covid-19 pandemic, the people in the biggest river island Majuli have been bearing the brunt of massive erosion by the Brahmaputra river in the past few days. The mighty river has gobbled up vast portions of land in the island posing a threat to its existence. Several organizations like the All Assam Students' Union have strongly criticized government failures to protect Majuli and demanded fruitful measures at the earliest. Aasu said the situation has taken a serious turn in areas like Misamara, Major Chapori, Samoguri, Kamalabari, Salmora and Bhakat Chapori. Besides, a vast portion of land at the busy Kamalabari ferry ghat and paddy fields at Misamora and Major Chapori areas have been eroded.
