The Independent MASSILLON This holiday season the Massillon Salvation Army is providing toys and other treats to more than 700 area children, a jump of 300 over last year. The group hosted its annual Christmas giveaway Thursday. When it concludes Friday, the citadel will have reached 1,400 people. The number of those seeking help isn't a surprise to Salvation Army officials, Major Tom Perks said. Since the start of the pandemic they have seen more families, including many that have never before sought such services. From food, to utility assistance and help with housing, the numbers of those in need continue to rise.
