England’s Euro 2020 game against the Czech Republic is approaching the 15th minute and Harry Maguire has touched the ball 43 times. With his 44th touch, Maguire does something for the first time: he passes the ball to Luke Shaw.
That was one of only seven passes from England’s left-sided central defender to England’s left-back on Tuesday. For some context, Maguire played 80 minutes in that position (he moved to the right when Tyrone Mings replaced John Stones) and completed 62 passes in total during England’s 1-0 victory.
That means about 11 percent of his passes ended up at Shaw’s feet. In fact, Maguire made more passes to the England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford than the full-back who spent the majority of the game outside him.
